There have been quite a few attempts to compute synchronous generator parameters based on voltage and current synchrophasors taken under power system transients. However, we have not seen any publications with thorough analysis as to how soon the phasor measurement unit reacts to disturbance conditions, which components of the transient are filtered out and which are passed through, as well as what the total vector error is. The goal of this research is to determine all of these characteristics of a phasor measurement unit when playing back transient oscillograms for a stator short circuit obtained through mathematical modeling. The transient oscillograms have been derived via both a full Park-Gorev system of flux linkage equations as well as the MATLAB/Simulink Synchronous Machine block. Physical modeling was then conducted via a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) along with a dedicated phasor measurement unit ENIP-2 (PMU), and the stator current phasors were recorded. Our analysis has shown that both RTDS and ENIP-2 (PMU) almost entirely filter out the exponentially decaying DC component of the fault current while closely following the periodical signal envelope. The total vector error has been estimated to become below 1–2 % after around 0,02–0,03 s into the fault when selecting the “P” class filters according to IEEE C37.118. We have come to a conclusion that synchrophasor measurements under power system disturbances could be utilized for estimating the synchronous, transient, and subtransient generator parameters. The selected synchronous machine model in the form of flux linkage equations is correct, as the obtained transient oscillograms are exactly the same as those produced by Simulink. “P” class phasor measurements can be recommended for representing transients in the stator circuit of a synchronous generator. The results of this investigation are meant to be employed for synchronous machine parameter estimation based on phasors sourced from RTDS and, hopefully, from phasor measurement units installed at power plants.

Abstract We have extracted 636 spectra taken at the positions of 583 transient sources from the third data release of the Hobby–Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX). The transients were discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) during 2018–2022. The HETDEX spectra provide a potential means to obtain classifications for a large number of objects found by photometric surveys for free. We attempt to explore and classify the spectra by utilizing several template-matching techniques. We have identified two transient sources, ZTF20aatpoos = AT 2020fiz and ZTF19abdkelq, as supernova (SN) candidates. We classify AT 2020fiz as a Type IIP SN observed ∼10 days after explosion, and we propose ZTF19abdkelq as a likely Type Ia SN caught ∼40 days after maximum light. ZTF photometry of these two sources are consistent with their classifications as SNe. Beside these two objects, we have confirmed several ZTF transients as variable active galactic nuclei based on their spectral appearance, and determined the host galaxy types of several other ZTF transients.

Transient vibration environments are an important consideration in qualification of aircraft store components — particularly for aircraft with internal storage bays. Generally, these transient vibration environments provide high stimulus input to a store via aerodynamic forces for up to 15 seconds on numerous occasions during training. With the recent introduction of the technique of Time Waveform Replication (TWR) to laboratory testing (MIL-STD-810G Method 525), store components can be readily tested to replications of field-measured transient vibration environments. This paper demonstrates the use of the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) on a collection of measured field responses for specification of transient vibration environments. The paper establishes a basis for moving from (1) transient vibration measured field response to (2) transient vibration stochastic specification of the measured field response to (3) laboratory simulation of transient vibration environments.

Transient materials/electronics is an emerging class of technology concerned with materials and devices that are designed to operate over a pre-defined period of time, then undergo controlled degradation when exposed to stimuli. Degradation/transiency rate in solvent-triggered devices is strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the constituents, as well as their interactions with the solvent upon exposure. Such interactions are typically slow, passive, and diffusion-driven. In this study, we are introducing and exploring the integration of gas-forming reactions into transient materials/electronics to achieve expedited and active transiency. The integration of more complex chemical reaction paths to transiency not only expedites the dissolution mechanism but also maintains the pre-transiency stability of the system while under operation. A proof-of-concept transient electronic device, utilizing sodium-bicarbonate/citric-acid pair as gas-forming agents, is demonstrated and studied vs. control devices in the absence of gas-forming agents. While exhibiting enhanced transiency behavior, substrates with gas-forming agents also demonstrated sufficient mechanical properties and physical stability to be used as platforms for electronics.

Killer whales, Orcinus orca (L., 1758), in the North Pacific are classified as three genetically distinct ecotypes: residents (fish-eaters), transients (mammal-eaters), and offshores (probable fish-eaters). Within the transient ecotype, three putative subpopulations have been identified by genetic analysis: West Coast transients, Gulf of Alaska transients, and AT1 transients. Here, we examine the behavior and vocalizations of the AT1 transients, which are found only in the Prince William Sound/Kenai Fjords region, to determine if their acoustic behavior distinguishes them from other genetically distinct transient subpopulations. We identified 14 discrete, pulsed calls in the vocal repertoire of the AT1 transients. These calls were entirely different than those of West Coast and sympatric Gulf of Alaska transients. Despite their large call repertoire, AT1 transients were silent most of the time, utilizing a foraging strategy of stealth, acoustic crypsis, and passive listening for locating marine-mammal prey. Unlike resident killer whales, AT1 transient vocalization types were context specific. For example, lone AT1 transients produced long-distance, high-amplitude pulsed calls in stereotyped sequences to locate other AT1 whales. In contrast, hunting individuals emitted low-amplitude pulsed calls to maintain contact with group members. The repertoire and call-usage patterns of the AT1 transients are consistent with genetic evidence that they are a unique, reproductively and socially isolated subpopulation in danger of extinction.

In order to reproduce, enveloped viruses must deposit their genomes into host cells. The first step of this process is the fusion of viral and cellular membranes, which allows the release of the viral contents into the cell. An envelope glycoprotein on the surface of the virus is responsible for fusion. It is usually composed of two subunits, a surface subunit that attaches the virus to the host cell, and a transmembrane subunit that mediates the fusion process. Recent biochemical and structural studies on the transmembrane subunit of the HIV- I virus, gp4 l, have revealed a transient intermediate of the fusion process that is a potential target for anti-viral therapy. After virion attachment to the cell, gp41 undergoes a conformational change and inserts into the target cell membrane. Concomitantly, a conserved region of gp4 l that is hidden both before and after this stage is accessible. The exposed core contains a trimeric coiled coil. A hydrophobic pocket on the surface of this coiled coil has been previously identified as a promising drug target. However, synthetic peptides corresponding to this region aggregate, and are therefore not useful for drug screens. This thesis describes the development of a hybrid molecule that accurately presents the gp41 transient pocket and the use of this hybrid in a screen for potential anti-HIV molecules (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3). Extensive biochemical and structural studies on other viral envelope glycoproteins imply that many diverse viruses utilize similar mechanisms of viral entry (reviewed in Chapter 4 ). Thus, the methods described for targeting the transient intermediate of gp4 l-mediated fusion should be useful for combating many diverse viruses.

Environmental sustainability requires resource management that takes future generations into account. The present generation has witnessed changes across the planet, unprecedented in human history and disrupting communities and cities around the world, due to shifting global climate. This is primarily the result of fossil fuels, which powered modern civilization but dramatically increased levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and may be the least sustainable aspect of human civilization. Chapter 1 justifies the research from an environmental perspective and provides initial research parameters. Thin film photovoltaic (PV) modules are reported the most sustainable among energy production technologies currently available. Electrodeposited PV layers offer significant improvement to sustainability metrics over current thin film production methods, at reduced cost, but have rarely been demonstrated on an industrial scale.

Quasi-rest potential (QRP) ultimately led to large-scale, electrodeposited thin film CdTe modules. An in-situ material characterization technique that allows adjustment of the deposition voltage (Vdep) to match the exact experimental conditions, QRP enabled precise control of deposit stoichiometry and crystallinity. Chapter 2 discusses theory and literature regarding QRP, and introduces the open-circuit voltage transient (Voc T), developed by the present research for analyzing QRP as a function of both Vdep and time. VocT data from a CdTe ethylene glycol bath matches details and speculations from the literature.

Although predicted to have wide applicability, experimental QRP data have never been published for compounds unrelated to CdTe. Chapter 3 discusses VocTs performed in pursuit of electrodeposited CuInS2, demonstrating functionality as a QRP scan in a variety of ethylene glycol solutions. Stoichiometries of deposited films were improved by using the V ocT to determine appropriate plating voltages. VocTs enabled QRP, in-situ rest potential (EM2), and current simultaneously vs Vdep and correlated with cyclic voltammetry experiments. Films approaching stoichiometric CuInS2 were generally obtained around -1 V vs Ag/AgCl, just noble of onset of metallic indium deposition, with a QRP around -0.8 V and EM2 between -0.55 V and -0.6 V. Sulfur content of deposited films could also be significantly increased during deposition using open-circuit techniques based on VocT data. Serendipitous production of large copper sulfide nanowires is briefly discussed.

In this thesis, power system transients are considered as an opportunity for development of on-line diagnostics of power components and specifically the insulation systems of power transformers and bushings. A new technique for on-line dielectric response measurement of power transformer bushings is proposed which utilizes natural transients in the power system, such as lightning and switching surges, as stimuli. Laboratory investigations are done on implementation of the proposed technique. Measurement considerations, data acquisition and processing involved in achievement of reasonable accuracy in the Dielectric Response (DR) are presented. Capability of the technique in tracking of the degradation signatures such as moisture content in the insulation has been evaluated and it has shown a good level of accuracy by being compared to the Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS).  The proposed technique is tested on the service-aged 150 kV bushings and feasibility of the technique for monitoring of dielectric properties of power transformer bushings has been assessed; the results are promising for the technique to be used in the real application.  Partial Discharges (PD) behavior under transients has been also studied for different materials in this project. PD behavior of different defects, at different insulation condition, responding to the overvoltage transients in form of superimposed impulses on ac voltages was investigated and it was perceived how their distinctive response and the interpretation of  that, can be useful for their identification. Besides the conventional materials, surface ac PD properties of modified paper with silica and zinc oxide nanoparticles under the superimposed impulses have been assessed in this project. Proper type and optimum concentration level of nanoparticles in the paper are the factors that lead to the improvement of PD behavior in the modified paper under overvoltage transients.

Travel times, operating speeds, and service reliability influence costs and service attractiveness. This paper outlines an approach to quantify how these metrics change after a modification of roadway design or transit routes using archived transit data. The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), Portland's public transportation provider, archives automatic vehicle location (AVL) data for all buses as part of their bus dispatch system (BDS). This research combines three types of AVL data (stop event, stop disturbance, and high-resolution) to create a detailed account of transit behavior; this probe data gives insights into the behavior of transit as well as general traffic. The methodology also includes an updated approach for confidence intervals estimates that more accurately represent of range of speed and travel time percentile estimates. This methodology is applied to three test cases using a month of AVL data collected before and after the implementation of each roadway change. The results of the test cases highlight the broad applicability for this approach to before-and-after studies.

This is a report of a professional project intended to act as an informational tool for the evaluation of a dynamic dispatch system at Embarcadero Station for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Systems that operate dispatch algorithms do so in response to on-time performance and reliability. The optimization problem is documented in many transportation contexts including airline networks, bus dispatch, and freight routing. According to the research, optimizing available options and re-routing based on available options can create a more efficient system that would minimize operating costs and improving service reliability for customers. The methodology presented here uses current headway information to dynamically change dispatch assignment between J, L, and M lines. The reassignment program was applied to randomly selected weekdays in March of 2012. After analysis it was determined that the application has the potential to decrease mean operating headways by up to 3% (or approximately 15 seconds).

Abstract Because of its various features and advantages, utilizing IC smart card as a tool to integrate transport ticketing. has become an international trend. The electronic ticketing system can save cost, simplify fare collection procedure, increase passenger flow, and decrease time lag. By this new type of ticking technology, it further advances service quality, operation efficiency and transport capacity for the transport system operation. Furthermore, resources may be shared though the alliance among different industrial sectors and the ticket integration. The objectives of this study are try to find ways how to install IC smart card to implement ticket integration and minimize cost through ticket integration, as well as to find the factors of success in the ticket integration from profitability viewpoint for Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. The ways of implementation of relative users in these factors are also evaluated to propose a feasible implementation project and a concept of overall development, so as to meet the target of integrating mass transport tickets for the Kaohsiung metropolitan area. Other relative IC smart card business will be further developed to advance operation efficiency, decrease operation cost, and increase revenue of the case company, leading to an enterprise of perpetual operation. From market environment aspect, regulatory policy aspect, technical specification of the card, and deep interviews with relative suppliers such as Hongkong Octopus Card, Taipei Easy Card, Southern Taiwan Smart Card etc., we try to find four key factors affecting ticket integration, so as to comply with the specification and limit provided in our bank laws, clarify the allocation of costs of installing equipment and distribution of profit sources, and carefully select specification of the card. Before integrating ticket, small consumptions must be combined to explore business opportunity. The experiences in continual improvements in these four factors of relative users are considered in our proposal of overall development concept and implementation project for Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp. As soon ticket integration is initiated, the issuing of joint card should be discussed with banks, so as to clarify the allocation of costs of installing equipment and distribution of profit sources among banks and relative participants, and then build an efficient operation model. All measures such as the adoption of non-touch card in conformity with specifications of ISO and Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, preparation of combining small consumptions, cooperation with retailers for profits, exploration of card distribution channels, and application range of card, are necessary projects leading to success in the implementation of the target of ticket integration.

Abstract Rocket engine nozzle structures typically fail after a few engine cycles due to the extreme thermomechanical loading near the nozzle throat. In order to obtain an accurate lifetime prediction and to increase the lifetime, a detailed understanding of the thermomechanical behavior and the acting loads is indispensable. The first part is devoted to a thermally coupled simulation (conjugate heat transfer) of a fatigue experiment. The simulation contains a thermal FEM model of the fatigue specimen structure, RANS simulations of nine cooling channel flows and a Flamelet-based RANS simulation of the hot gas flow. A pseudo-transient, implicit Dirichlet–Neumann scheme is utilized for the partitioned coupling. A comparison with the experiment shows a good agreement between the nodal temperatures and their corresponding thermocouple measurements. The second part consists of the lifetime prediction of the fatigue experiment utilizing a sequentially coupled thermomechanical analysis scheme. First, a transient thermal analysis is carried out to obtain the temperature field within the fatigue specimen. Afterwards, the computed temperature serves as input for a series of quasi-static mechanical analyses, in which a viscoplastic damage model is utilized. The evolution and progression of the damage variable within the regions of interest are thoroughly discussed. A comparison between simulation and experiment shows that the results are in good agreement. The crucial failure mode (doghouse effect) is captured very well.

This chapter studies a deterministic approach to transient trajectory generation and control as applied to the forced Van der Pol oscillatory system. This type of system tends towards a strongly nonlinear system, which can be considered chaotic. A classical tuning method, targeted exponential weighting, and isolated trajectory fractionalization trajectory generation methods are examined. Illustrating the given deterministic approach via the Van der Pol system highlights the potentially iterative nature of deterministic methods, and that traditional optimal linear time-invariant control techniques are unable to perform as desired whereas even an idealized nonlinear feedforward control significantly outperforms at the steady-state. It will be shown that utilizing a-priori knowledge of the system dynamics will enable the isolated trajectory fractionalization method to minimize the nonlinear transient effects due to miss-modeled or unmodeled plant dynamics, and that this benefit can be coupled with the targeted exponential weighting approach for greatly decreased trajectory tracking error on the order of a 92% reduction of the objective cost function in the presented case study based on the forced Van der Pol system.

The direct focus of this chapter is to explore the potential of online Adaptive NeuroFuzzy Type-2 (ANFT2) control system for damping inter-area oscillations using Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). The nonlinear ANFT2-based direct control scheme is proposed to damp inter-area oscillations by utilizing its model free and universal approximation capabilities. The Gaussian and triangular membership functions with different variations of uncertain mean and standard deviation are considered for ANFT2. The adaptation mechanism utilizes gradient descent-based back-propagation algorithm using Lyapunov stability criteria to update the rule parameters. The performance evaluation of proposed control strategy has been validated using two and three machine power systems. The nonlinear time domain simulations reveal that ANFT2 has excellent damping capabilities as compared to conventional PI control. Simulation results for different performance indices further emphasize the optimal performance of ANFT2 with uncertain mean and variance of triangular membership function in transient and steady state region.

In the field of pattern recognition, probabilistic neural networks (PNNs) have been proven as an important classifier. For pattern recognition of EMG signals, the characteristics usually used are: (1) amplitude, (2) frequency, and (3) space. However, significant temporal characteristic exists in the transient and non-stationary EMG signals, which cannot be considered by traditional PNNs. In this article, a recurrent PNN, called recurrent log-linearized Gaussian mixture network (R-LLGMN), is introduced for EMG pattern recognition, with the emphasis on utilizing temporal characteristics. The structure of R-LLGMN is based on the algorithm of a hidden Markov model (HMM), which is a routinely used technique for modeling stochastic time series. Since R-LLGMN inherits advantages from both HMM and neural computation, it is expected to have higher representation ability and show better performance when dealing with time series like EMG signals. Experimental results show that R-LLGMN can achieve high discriminant accuracy in EMG pattern recognition.

Traditional methods of qualifying pressure vessel components to ASME stress and fatigue requirements often involve complex and lengthy calculation processes. The costs of individually analyzing every specified transient can be prohibitive if large numbers of transients are considered, with each one having varied loading conditions acting on the components. In addition, the time dependent nature of real transient loads results in a significant computational and bookkeeping problem. In most cases the analyst uses a number of simplifying and enveloping assumptions to develop stresses to represent all transient conditions. He relies on his experience and judgment to make simplifications with respect to the timing of applied mechanical loads, as well as the relationship between the applied mechanical loads and the timing of the thermal loads. The analyst’s skill governs the length and complexity of the qualification process. The WESTEMS™ Integrated Modeling approach dramatically simplifies this effort and improves analysis accuracy, while reducing the overall time necessary to perform the analysis. WESTEMS™ Integrated Models can reduce the process of analyzing a list of transients defined by global parameter time histories and reporting final design stress and fatigue to a few steps. This paper discusses how WESTEMS™ overcomes the technical difficulties encountered in automating such tasks, and shows the technical superiority of WESTEMS™ over the current traditional methods. It also demonstrates how applying the WESTEMS™ technology to NSSS equipment can reduce engineering life cycle costs.

High exhaust emissions reduction efficiencies from a spark ignited (SI) internal combustion engine utilizing an NSCR catalyst system requires complex fuel control strategies. The allowable equivalence ratio operating range is very narrow where NSCR systems achieve high exhaust emissions reduction efficiencies of multiple species. Current fuel control technologies utilizing lambda sensor feedback are reported to be unable to sustain these demands for extended operation periods and when transients are introduced. Lambda sensor accuracy is the critical issue with current fuel controllers. The goal of this project was to develop a minimization control algorithm utilizing a Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor installed downstream of the NSCR catalyst system for feedback air/fuel ratio control. When the engine is operated lean, NOx is produced and the NOx sensor responds accordingly. When the engine is operated rich, the NSCR catalyst system produces Ammonia. The NOx sensor has a cross sensitivity to Ammonia and responds as though it has been exposed to NOx. This behavior provides an opportunity for a unique control strategy that allows lambda sensor calibration to be ignored. Testing was performed on a 100kW rated Cummins-Onan generator set that was reconfigured to operate utilizing an electronic gas carburetor (EGC2) with lambda sensor feedback and high reduction efficiency NSCR catalyst system. The control algorithm was programmed utilizing a Labview interface that communicated with the electronic gas carburetor where the fuel trim adjustment was physically made. Improvement under steady state operation was observed. The system was also evaluated during load and fuel composition transients.

Many residents in large Californian metropolitan areas are heavily burdened by housing costs. Advocates, researchers, and elected officials in California are debating whether transit-oriented development (TOD) could be an effective tool to mitigate the housing affordability problem by increasing housing supply and reducing transportation costs in transit-rich neighborhoods. This study contributes to this debate by estimating how much Californian families can save on transportation costs by living in transit-oriented developments (TODs). By utilizing the confidential version of the 2010–2012 California Household Travel Survey, this study evaluates the impact of TOD on household transportation expenditures by comparing TOD households with two control groups. When controlling for household demographics, TOD households save $1,232 per year on transportation expenditures—18% of their total annual transportation expenditures. When controlling for both demographics and neighborhood environment, TOD households save $429 per year—about 6% of their total annual transportation expenditures. The study confirms that Californian households save money on transportation costs by living in TODs mainly because they own fewer vehicles. About two-thirds of the savings can be attributed to transit-friendly neighborhood environment and one-third to access to rail transit, which highlights the importance of integrating a rail transit system with supportive land use planning and neighborhood design.

Numerous extant studies are dedicated to enhancing the safety of active transportation modes, but very few studies are devoted to safety analysis surrounding transit stations, which serve as an important modal interface for pedestrians and bicyclists. This study bridges the gap by developing joint models based on the multivariate conditionally autoregressive (MCAR) priors with a distance-oriented neighboring weight matrix. For this purpose, transit-station-centered data in Los Angeles County were used for model development. Feature selection relying on both random forest and correlation analyses was employed, which leads to different covariate inputs to each of the two jointed models, resulting in increased model flexibility. Utilizing an Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) algorithm and various evaluation criteria, the results demonstrate that models with a correlation effect between pedestrians and bicyclists perform much better than the models without such an effect. The joint models also aid in identifying significant covariates contributing to the safety of each of the two active transportation modes. The research results can furnish transportation professionals with additional insights to create safer access to transit and thus promote active transportation.
