Abstract Introduction With the removal in 2016 of restrictions on recruiting women to the combat arms in the all-volunteer Australian Army, a key question has been whether adding women to small combat teams will reduce the sense of cohesion among their members, which entails their subjective bonds with each other, their leader, and wider organization. Despite recent initiatives in Australia and the USA, there are too few women in combat units in any country to answer this question and how these subjective bonds affect a team’s ability to stick together under pressure. Men and women recruits in the Australian Army have undertaken basic soldier training in mixed-gender teams since 1995. Recruit training provides the foundation of teamwork and cohesion in all types of units. The present study capitalized on this well-established practice as an avenue for illuminating the development of cohesion in the form of subjective bonds within mixed-gender teams. Materials and Methods The respondents were 89 females and 434 males, who were members of 46 teams denoted as “sections,” each consisting of 9–12 recruits. The gender mix of the sections varied from 0% female (all males) up to 55.6% females. The recruits were surveyed on three occasions during the 81-day recruit training (Days 10, 46, 80). The questionnaire comprised 18 items asking the recruits’ ratings of “vertical” bonding with their instructor/leaders, “horizontal” bonding within their sections, and “organizational” bonding with the wider Australian Army. This study was conducted under Defence ethics approval DPR-LREP 069-15. Results At the start of training, vertical bonding of the recruits with their instructor/leaders was significantly higher than horizontal and organizational bonding, which were similar. During training, all three types of bonding as rated by both female and male recruits increased and largely converged to a high level. Any apparent gender-related differences were not statistically significant. Bonding scores for females did decline slightly as the proportion of women increased, but only significantly for vertical bonding. Even these declines all occurred within a band of high scores. For male recruits, there was no discernible relationship of bonding scores with the percentage of females in a section; the lines of best fit appeared flat. Conclusions Within the Australian Army, women and men have been trained in mixed-gender sections since 1995 with sustained success, at least anecdotally. The present findings provide the first independent confirmation that all three dimensions of cohesion increase in strength during recruit training much to the same degree in women and men alike. To the extent that felt cohesion translates into effective teamwork, mixed-gender training establishes a sound foundation for integrating women into combat units as well as support units, where they have traditionally served.

The purpose of the study was to examine motivation and intentions to complete a learning portfolio. Seventy newly recruited Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) at a UK police constabulary completed questionnaires at four different time points during training that examined their perceptions of the instrumentality of the learning portfolio and their intention to complete it. Results revealed decreases in motivation and intention over the four training periods, with substantially lower ratings six months into training. This study provides insight of the malleability of motivation and attitudes towards the learning portfolio, suggesting that trainers should pay more attention to motivational processes.

AbstractCandidates who wish to undertake Royal Marine recruit training, a physically strenuous course which now extends 32 weeks, must first of all successfully complete a Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA) and four psychomotor tests (Naval Recruiting Tests or RTs) before attending a three-day selection course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, where their Physical capabilities are tested to the full. The effectiveness of theses procedures was untested until the Institute of Naval Medicine conducted a retrospective study during 1999-2000 from which the present study is taken.Data from 1232 recruits were examined to explore the relationship between the outcome of Commando training (pass or fail) with these various selection measures. Estimated aerobic power, time to complete the assault course and age were associated with outcome, as were PQA, RTs 1, 3, 4 and total RT score. A regression equation comprising aerobic fitness, assault course time, RT4 and age gave the best overall prediction of outcome (64%). It is suggested that this mathematical approach provides a scientifically valid and objective assessment tool for future selection strategies.

Background: Physical exercise can affect the immune system. We studied the effect of antioxidants on hematological and immune biomarkers after heavy training. Methods: 24 well-trained and well-fed male firefighters were randomly divided into supplemented and placebo groups, and tested for immunology-related variables using venous blood samples in the fasting state, pre- (M1) and post- (M2) five weeks of daily micronutrient supplementation (15 mg of beta-carotene, 200 mg of vitamin C, 136 mg of vitamin E, 200 μg of selenium, 15 mg of zinc, 100 mg of magnesium). Total leukocytes and a differential count for five populations were determined using standard procedures (MAXM—Beckman Coulter Diagnostics; Brea, CA, USA). Lymphocyte subsets were determined through immunophenotyping. Results: Although all values were within the normal range for healthy adults and athletes in the supplemented group (SG), mean CD3+CD8+, CD8+ and CD16+CD56+ decreased (p < 0.05; small to moderate effects), while mean CD4+, CD19+ and CD4+/CD8+ increased (p < 0.05; small effects) after five-weeks. Regarding the placebo group (PG), higher total leukocyte count (p < 0.05; trivial effect) and natural killer cells percentage (CD16+CD56+; p < 0.05; moderate effect) were observed when comparing M1 and M2. Conclusions: Antioxidants supplementation did not alter well-fed male firefighters recruit firefighters’ immune cell response during the five-week physical training program.

As part of their duties, police regularly engage with citizens, which can result in the use of force. While we know how often and under what circumstances officers use force, little is known about officers’ decision-making processes that lead to force. The study took a naturalistic decision-making approach to analyze debrief sessions between 91 recruits and their trainers after partaking in a use-of-force assessment scenario. Results show recruit’s decision making was more aligned with an intuitive style rather than an analytical style. Recruits reported experiencing perceptual, cognitive, and physiological impairments that influenced the way they assessed the situation and affected their ability to successfully execute force techniques. The findings provide valuable insights into the theoretical knowledge around police decision making and how officers are making use-of-force decisions in the field. This has real-world implications for training/education and could help reduce the effects of decision-making impairments.

Background Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) are electronic databases that track controlled substance prescriptions in a state. They are underused tools in preventing opioid abuse. Most PDMP education research measures changes in knowledge or confidence rather than behavior. Objective To evaluate the impact of online case-based training on healthcare provider use of the Maryland (USA) PDMP. Methods We used e-mail distribution lists to recruit providers to complete a brief educational module. Using a pre-training and post-training survey in the module, we measured self-reported PDMP use patterns and perceived PDMP value in specific clinical situations and compared pre- and post-training responses. Within the module, we presented three fictional pain cases and asked participants how they would manage each, both before, and then after presenting prescription drug history simulating a PDMP report. We measured changes in the fictional case treatment plans before and after seeing prescription history. Finally, we measured and compared how often each participant accessed the Maryland PDMP database before and after completing the educational module. We used multivariate logistic regression to measure the effect of the intervention on actual PDMP use frequency. Results One hundred and fifty participants enrolled and completed the training module, and we successfully retrieved real-world PDMP use data of 137 of them. Participants’ decisions to prescribe opioids changed significantly after reviewing PDMP data in each of the fictional cases provided in the module. In the months following the training, the rate of PDMP use increased by a median of four use-cases per month among providers in practice for less than 20 years (p = 0.039) and two use-cases per month among infrequent opioid prescribers (p = 0.014). Conclusion A brief online case-based educational intervention was associated with a significant increase in the rate of PDMP use among infrequent opioid prescribers and those in practice less than 20 years.

Background Access to providers and programs that provide medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) remains a systemic barrier for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), particularly if they live in rural areas. The Rural Access to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in Pennsylvania Project (Project RAMP) addressed this problem with a multisystem partnership that recruited, trained, and supported rural primary care providers to provide MOUD and implement an integrated care model (ICM) for patients with OUD. Given the demonstrated efficacy of Project RAMP, this article summarizes our recruitment strategies, including feasibility concerns for further expansion into other regions. Methods The approach for recruiting implementation sites included two phases: partner outreach and site identification. Once recruited, the Systems Transformation Framework guided planning and implementation activities. Recruitment and implementation activities were assessed with implementation trackers and evaluated by providers via key informant interviews (KIIs). Results Project RAMP recruited 26 primary care practices from 13 counties, including nine health systems and two private practice groups—exceeding the original target of 24 sites. There was a median of 49 days from first contact to project onboarding. A total of 108 primary care practices spanning 22 health systems declined participation. Findings from the KIIs highlighted the value of engaging PCPs by connecting to a shared vision (i.e., improving the quality of patient care) as well as addressing perceived participation barriers (e.g., offering concierge technical assistance to address lack of training or resources). Conclusion Findings highlight how successful recruitment activities should leverage the support of health system leadership. Findings also emphasize that aiding recruitment and engagement efforts successfully addressed prescribers’ perceived barriers to providing MOUD as well as facilitating better communication among administrators, PCPs, behavioral health professionals, care managers, and patients. Plain Language Summary: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death. The standard of care for OUD is the provision of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and the application of an integrative integrated care model (ICM) where behavioral health is blended with specialized medical services. Unfortunately, access to providers and healthcare facilities that provide MOUD or apply an ICM remains a systemic barrier for patients with OUD, particularly if they live in rural areas. Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach to implementing MOUD in primary care, findings from Project The Rural Access to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in Pennsylvania Project (Project RAMP) highlight strategies that may improve future MOUD and ICM implementation efforts in similar rural contexts. Specifically, future efforts to increase MOUD capacity by recruiting new providers should be prepared to leverage health system leadership, address provider barriers via training and expert consultation, and facilitate connections to local behavioral health providers. This approach may be helpful to others recruiting health systems and primary care practices to implement new care models to use MOUD in treating patients with OUD.

Researched is the problem of professional training of persons, recruited for the first time in the internal affairs bodies as prerequisite for provision of the law enforcement system with competent personnel, who qualitatively fulfill their duties to ensure protection of rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of citizens. That’s why the training of persons, recruited for the first time in the internal affairs bodies, is of paramount importance for the state. At the same time, the process of training police officers in departmental university has a number of specific features that distinguish it from training in educational organizations of civilian profile, incl. indivisibility of teaching and service, as well as orientation towards diligence and discipline. The purpose of this study was to analyze the process of vocational training of persons first recruited into service of internal organs, from the point of view of using elements of basic methodological concepts known to pedagogical science. As a result of the analysis, it can be argued, that methodological basis for training law enforcement specialists is largely eclectic and combines, to one degree or another, features of all the basic concepts. And although the system of vocational training for persons first recruited into service of internal affairs bodies is built quite clearly and in many ways effective, it still lacks flexibility and adaptability to dynamic changes in external environment.

Initially, this research programme investigated training methods to improve strengthrelated material handling performance in the British Army. A widely used training programme was evaluated for its effectiveness in improving material handling, and found to provide some significant but small improvements. Modifications to the training programme, including the use of a large strength-training element, were devised based on prior research evidence. The modified training programme was evaluated and compared with the original programme, and shown to be significantly more effective at improving material handling. Any means to improve the effectiveness of strength training per se would further improve the effectiveness of the modified training programme. Consequently, a potential means to improve the effectiveness of strength training via postexercise nutritional supplementation was investigated. The encouraging but not statistically significant results suggested further research to evaluate the potential of the supplementation regimen and also to better illuminate the possible mechanisms. An evaluation of the hormonal and metabolic responses to varying combinations of resistance exercise and supplementation provided little additional evidence to support the effectiveness of the supplementation regimen. However, the likely mechanism of the effect that may exist was better identified as a direct effect of insulin or amino acid availability on muscle cell growth, rather than a reduction in circulating cortisol concentration.

This thesis investigates the epidemiology of lifestyle behaviours and training injuries among British Army infantry recruits. In Study 1, the Military Pre-training Questionnaire (MPQ) was developed to assess multiple risk factors for injury (smoking; alcohol consumption; physical activity; diet; and injury history). Its feasibility and test-retest reliability was demonstrated in a representative sample (n = 58) with no evidence of systematic bias between administrations. The MPQ was subsequently completed by a large cohort of infantry recruits before commencing initial training (n = 1,960). This enabled its validity to be assessed in Study 2, which revealed that a simple, single-item measure of pre-training physical activity was a strong predictor of initial physical fitness levels and likely training outcomes. In Study 3, cross-sectional analyses of MPQ responses enabled the prevalence, co-occurrence and clustering of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours to be assessed. Although physically active, the majority of recruits entering infantry training smoked, drank hazardously and had low fruit and vegetable consumption. Six percent of recruits reported no unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, 20% reported one, 35% reported two, 31% reported three and 8% reported all four. Paired combinations of unhealthy behaviours were strongly associated, particularly smoking/drinking, smoking/inactivity and diet/inactivity. Finally, in Study 4, a high incidence of overuse injuries in infantry recruits was observed using a prospective study design. Recruits with lower pre-training fitness levels, low body mass and past injuries were exposed to a higher risk of sustaining a training injury, while there was no evidence to suggest that engaging in unhealthy lifestyle behaviours increased injury risk. Collectively, the four studies have enabled, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of lifestyle behaviours and training injuries among British Army infantry recruits. The findings have important implications for military health improvement and injury prevention strategies.

Nutritional factors affecting bone health throughout the lifecvcle has received considerable attention in the literature but little is known about the influence of nutrition on stress fracture (SF) risk. Royal Marine (RM) recruits undergo a 32-week arduous military training programme, where the prevalence of SF has been ~5% over recent years. The Institute of Naval Medicine was tasked by Surgeon General to investigate risk factors associated with stress fracture during RM training at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines. The present thesis focuses on the nutritional aspects of this work, with the primary aim to identify the influence of past and present dietary intake and nutritional status on SF risk and bone health in RM recruits. A bespoke dietary assessment tool was developed to investigate nutritional intake relative to SF risk and training success in a cohort of RM recruits (n=545). No aspects of diet during training were associated with SF risk. However, recruits with a higher energy intake during training were more likely to successfully complete training (P<0.05). Poor aerobic fitness, low body mass (less than 65 kg) and small thigh girth were independent risk factors for SF (n=27; P<0.05). In a larger cohort of RM recruits (n=1090), childhood (0-12 y), adolescent (12-18 y) and pre-RM training diets were assessed with a food frequency questionnaire. Vitamin 0 and micronutrient status were assessed in serum blood samples. Childhood milk intake and adolescent fruit and vegetable intakes were associated with bone quality (assessed by Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation) (P<0.05). Low milk intake during childhood, and high intake of fizzy drinks during adolescence, were associated with increased SF risk (n=75; P<0.05). Importantly, serum 25(OH)D (as a marker of vitamin 0 status) <60 nrnol.L" was associated with increased SF risk (P<0.05). Stress fractured recruits (n=65) and matched controls (n=65) underwent Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry and peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography scanning. Stress fractured recruits had lower bone density of the lumbar spine and hip, and narrower tibiae than their matched controls. These novel data suggest an important role for lifestyle factors in the pathogenesis of SF in a military population, with concomitant bone density/structure differences at key fracture sites. Further research (including a possible vitamin D supplementation intervention) is warranted.

In the latest years the Swedish armed forces have gone from an armed force with conscripts to voluntary men and women. When the basic training is voluntarily may the question be if the new men and women have the same approach to Desirable competences and pedagogy that is used by their officers during their training. Desirable competences are a part of the model transformational leadership and are divided into task related competence, management competence, social competence and capacitate to cope with stress. To deal with this problem I have used questionnaires from conscripts and a new questionnaire made on voluntary recruits. I have compared the results in a case study method and it shows a positive progress from the recruits view how the officers use examples from the transformational leadership. The study shows that recruits want officers to make demands, motivate and inspire them. The recruits want to know the goal with the education and they want the officers to make demands on them.

In July 2010 Sweden abolished conscription in favor of an all-volunteer military force, whereupon the prerequisites for the recruitment and training of soldiers changed. Today, men and women from the age of 18 can sign up for a so-called Basic Military Training (GMU) for three months on a voluntary basis. The new prerequisites can, with regard to voluntariness, be on par with civilian adult education, both of which are, e.g., experiencing drop-outs as a result of lack of motivation. The purpose of the study is partly to identify the officers’ perceived challenges at GMU regarding recruits earlier experience, motivation and the teacher’s role. In addition, the study aims to examine whether these challenges are the same as for the civilian adult education. Interviews of eight officers have been conducted to distinguish the challenges that exist at GMU, as well as a comparative analysis between these challenges and theory of adult learning, including Knowles’s andragogy model, which in this study represents challenges for the civilian adult education. The result shows that there are challenges at GMU that are the same as for the civilian adult education, particularly evident in terms of the motivation of the pupil/recruit, but on the other hand, the result shows that there are challenges at GMU that do not occur in the same extent as in adult education, and vice versa.

When interviewing female conscripts, Emma Lindgren Lauritzon (2012) found that they perceived their basic military training in the Swedish Armed Forces as a negative experience. The women felt that the environment was hostile and that they served on the conditions of men. This is especially alarming since the unequal conscription was replaced by voluntary service for all in 2010, making the Swedish defence dependent on attracting the whole population to fill up its necessary positions. Therefore, this thesis examines how female recruits experience the new basic military training and if the structural transformation, with a more gender equal entrance, has had an impact on the individual level. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, designed and presented by a deductive thematic analysis, and later interpreted through feministic and gender organizational theories. The results indicate a positive development in their experiences, and more so – a new development of the women feeling especially wanted and needed. This perceived dependency on women is arguably in the risk of backfiring, generating guilt if they disappoint the organisation. This study gives vital insight to the organisation in question, the Swedish Armed Forces, and also several new and interesting aspects to build future research on regarding women in the military.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a high injury rate in the lower extremities among military recruits. A correlation has been shown between female gender or a low level of physical activity prior to basic military training and a higher risk of injury. AIM: To investigate the self-reported injury rate in the lower extremities among Swedish recruits and the difference in injury rate between men and women. Another aim was to investigate correlation between self-reported injury rate in the lower extremities and self-reported physical activity, and to study this correlation for both men and women. METHOD: A quantitative study with a prospective, descriptive, comparative and correlative design. Data from two different questionnaires were answered by 177 recruits. RESULTS: 26% of the recruits reported injury in lower extremities after completing the basic training. There was a significant difference (p=0.006) in self-reported injury between female and male recruits. The level of prior physical activity and the injury rate amongst the recruits had a low correlation. CONCLUSION: The results indicate a high injury rate among Swedish recruits, especially among the female recruits. No correlation between self-reported physical activity and the injury rate in lower extremities was found.

Neuroimaging has significantly contributed to our understanding of human learning by tracking the neural correlates underlying the acquisition of new expertise. Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) suggest that the acquisition of arithmetic competence is reflected in a decrease of activation in frontal brain regions and a relative increase of activation in parietal brain regions that are important for arithmetic processing. Activation of the angular gyrus (AG) is related to fact learning, skilled retrieval, and level of automatization. fMRI investigations extend the findings of cognitive studies showing that behavioural differences between trained and untrained sets of items, between different arithmetic operations, and between different training strategies are reflected by specific activation patterns. fMRI studies also reveal inter-individual differences related to arithmetic competence, with low performing individuals showing lower AG activation when answering calculation problems. Importantly, training attenuates inter-individual differences in AG activation. Studies with calculation experts suggest that different strategies may be used to achieve extraordinary performance. While some experts recruit a more extended cerebral network compared with the average population, others use the same frontoparietal network, but more efficiently. In conclusion, brain imaging studies on arithmetic learning and expertise offer a promising view on the adaptivity of the human brain. Although evidence on functional or structural modifications following intervention in dyscalculic patients is still scarce, future studies may contribute to the development of more efficient and targeted rehabilitation programmes after brain damage or in cases of atypical numerical development.

United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 16 focus on gender equality, peace, justice, and strong institutions. One of these institutions is the police. Police work includes many opportunities to protect and promote gender equality. This study aims to find whether differences in attitudes towards gender equality between male and female police recruits before and after basic police training exist. The results reveal that the difference between male and female recruits is statistically significant both at the beginning and at the end of their basic police education. A statistically significant difference concerning the gender of the recruit was determined concerning the combination of three dependent variables that measured attitudes about gender equality, as well as about each individual variable. Furthermore, the research found that the influence of gender on differences in attitudes towards gender equality was stronger after education than before education for the police profession.

In 2013 the State of Oregon passed House Bill 3194—the Justice Reinvestment act—resulting in the creation of the Oregon Center for Policing Excellence. One goal of the center was to revise the curriculum for the statewide Basic Police Academy, with a focus on topics such as communications, crisis intervention, and procedural justice. This curriculum revision was then evaluated independently. A force option simulator was used to assess recruit interaction with community members; this allowed for a reliable and repeatable measurement tool to assess each cohort month after month. Evaluation of behavior changes in recruits from before to after curriculum revisions revealed significant improvements in key policing skills related to interacting with civilians in ways that build trust in police legitimacy, de-escalating hostile situations, and reducing the need for use of force. This chapter describes the curriculum revision in detail, presents results, and discusses them in light of police training moving forward.

Wherever there is a military establishment, men and women must be recruited into it and conditioned to be effective war-fighters. Whether or not they are ever deployed, there is a respect in which this conditioning is morally damaging to those involved. Combat training is geared towards making soldiers more comfortable with killing, so that they can do it repeatedly and efficiently in battle, without thinking too much or feeling too deeply. One of its aims is to enable recruits to use lethal violence without suffering emotional distress. But a morally decent person would experience distress in these circumstances. The upshot is that military conditioning is (or tries to be) morally damaging, or corrosive of virtue. It is morally injurious not by accident, but by design.

The diversification of clinical trial participants to include women and minorities is one of the biggest challenges for the clinical research industry. The lack of diversity in clinical trials prevents the tailoring of healthcare interventions specifically for women and minorities. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how health information technology and online strategies can be applied in the clinical trial research process to increase the recruitment and retention of women and minorities in clinical trials. By examining this issue from both the individual (participant) and clinical stakeholder perspective, appropriate strategies utilizing available technology are proposed. In the health care environment, strategies to diversify clinical trial participants include the secondary use of Electronic Health Records, and disease registries, as well as e-learning to raise awareness and train health professionals and clinical trial staff. In order to recruit diverse participant populations, the use of online advertising, social media, e-newsletters, tablets, smartphones, and apps are detailed. Lessons from previous use of technology in recruitment are outlined as well as future trends. In summary, while there are recognized challenges to implementation, the current health information technology and online strategies available seem promising as methods of increasing the participation of women and minorities in clinical trials.

In the previous chapter, we outlined a number of methods employed by geographers to study time–space patterns of disease incidence and spread. In this and the next four chapters we use these methods to explore five linked themes in the epidemiological history of war since 1850. We begin here with Theme 1, military mobilization, taking the United States as our geographical reference point. Military mobilization at the outset of wars has always been a fertile breeding ground for epidemics. The rapid concentration of large—occasionally vast—numbers of unseasoned recruits, usually under conditions of great urgency, sometimes in the absence of adequate logisitic arrangements, and often without sufficient accommodation, supplies, equipage, and medical support, entails a disease risk that has been repeated down the years. The epidemiological dangers are multiplied by the crowding together of recruits from different disease environments (including rural rather than urban settings) while, even in relatively recent conflicts, pressures to meet draft quotas have sometimes demanded the enlistment of weak, physically unfit, and sometimes disease-prone applicants. The testimony of Major Samuel D. Hubbard, surgeon to the Ninth New York Volunteer Infantry, US Army, during the Spanish–American War (1898) is illustrative: . . . I examined all the recruits for this regiment . . . Practically all the men belonged to one class . . . They were whisky-soaked, homeless wanderers, the majority of whom gave Bowery lodging houses as their places of residence . . . Certainly the regiment was composed of a class of men likely to be susceptible to disease . . . The regiment was hastily recruited, and while the greatest care was used to get the best, the best had to be selected from the worst. (Hubbard, cited in Reed et al., 1904, i. 223) . . . But the problem of mobilization and disease is not restricted to new recruits. As part of the broader pattern of heightened population mixing, regular service personnel may also be swept into the disease milieu while, occasionally, infections may escape the confines of hastily established assembly and training camps to diffuse widely in civil populations.

Modern computer gaming technology offers a rich potential as a platform for the creation of compelling immersive training systems, and there have been a number of game-based training systems developed in recent years. However, the field is still in its infancy. Improved understanding is needed on how to best embed instruction in a game and how to best use gaming features to support different types of instruction. Further, the field is inherently inter-disciplinary, requiring instructional system designers, software developers, game designers and more, yet there are no established development methodologies to ensure effective coordination and integration across these disciplines. The authors introduce a collaborative effort that is investigating how to improve the craft and science of game-based training. They present their experiences in creating a flooding control training system for the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, and discuss the inter-disciplinary development issues that they encountered. They present the lessons they learned and their views on how to advance current methods to support the consistent production of effective game-based training.

According to the World Health Organization’s No Health Without a Workforce report, the global shortage of community health workers (CHWs) is expected to reach 12.9 million by 2035. This shortfall raises pressing questions about how CHWs are recruited, trained, and supported as front-line care providers. Lay people become CHWs in a variety of ways; they might be chosen by a non-governmental organization or a government programme, elected by community members, or simply volunteer themselves at the right time and place. After recruitment, CHWs typically undergo training, and the scope and quality of this training can vary enormously. Often, limited funds are stretched to conduct trainings in person at facilities that may or may not be readily accessible for health workers, and refresher trainings are often cut in times of budget shortfall. While there may be no simple solution to these challenges, many now look to the use of digital technologies as a promising opportunity. Digital health interventions have come to play a growing role in healthcare in the last decade, yet the uses of technology for training, ongoing education, and supportive supervision remain understudied in lower-income settings. In this chapter, we examine a case study of digital health interventions in Nepal. We examine matters of baseline literacy and access to technology, the interweaving of technology and health system design issues, and prospects for integrating digital and face-to-face education and support. While the role of technology is easily overstated, we nonetheless argue that new digital workflows can address real implementation challenges if designed in a human-centred manner.

Managers tend to recruit individuals of highest educational standards who deserve quality jobs and attractive remuneration. Equally, disabled persons should enjoy the same benefits. In our era of unprecedented technological development, education should be flexible in order to meet the contemporary demands and the needs of all persons. This chapter analyzes the use of aids, including educational games that can be helpful in supporting people with disabilities. Types of games and games for disabled persons are considered. A more active involvement of international managers in the use of games in educational/training courses for disabled persons is also proposed. Their duties must be amended to include participation in curricula design for any level of vocational/technical education.

This study investigates and evaluates the effects of ESP training with the participants using Canvas- a virtual classroom and an actual one in parallel at a technical university in Vietnam. To achieve this, the study examined the students' perception on the use of Canvas, their reported difficulties in learning via Canvas, the effects of the training upon them, and their use and reflections on the use of virtual classroom. 60 third-year ESP students at the technical university were recruited. Participants were split into three groups: the pilot group (G1), the experimental group (G2) and the control group (G3). The research was implemented in an ESP training course of ten 180-minute classes, each class consisting of group discussion and ESP training with the use of virtual classroom. Quantitative data were collected from G2 and G3 on ESP ability using pre-tests and post-tests. Participants' reflective reports, supplemented by the researcher's journal were also collected as qualitative data. The quantitative results reveal a statistically significant difference in ESP performance between G2 and G3. The overall improvement in all ESP skills were recorded over the period of training, while G3's improvement was negligible. Qualitative data reveals the difficulties encountered by the participants during the training (such as the lack of technical skills, interrupted internet connection), their positive feedback on and interest in the training using canvas. The results of the study are discussed in terms of its contribution to research in this area and to the teaching and learning of ESP in the Vietnamese context.

The year 2020 has forced many institutions to suddenly convert wholly to online education as necessitated by a global pandemic. Online education introduces a physical distance between the instructor and the students that creates many barriers to learning in traditional lecture-style teaching. However, the rapid shift to online learning has opened many minds to the value of online educational tools from both the instructor's and student's points of view. For engineering education, the value of online learning can be increased through the adoption of a new perspective that engineering is a skill. Students who graduate from engineering programs are valued for 12 key skills: (1) problem-solving, (2) computer science, (3) industry skills, (4) pressure management, (5) teamwork, (6) creativity, (7) structural analysis, (8) communication, (9) attention to detail, (10) educational commitment, (11) data modeling, and (12) leadership. Possession of these skills has even led to many engineering graduates being recruited outside of the field of engineering due to the value they offer. With the true value of graduates being the skills they possess, it stands to reason that the curriculum of engineering programs should be designed for the development of these skills. By adjusting the curriculum through the use of repeated attempts on assignments and quizzes, students can be prompted to increase their investment in courses and thus improve the skills they develop. Offering immediate feedback through the use of online tools can further improve skill development by highlighting shortfalls to students so they can adjust accordingly before engaging in their next attempt. Redefining engineering education as a skill development offers the opportunity to take advantage of the current online learning situation to create new learning environments that are more optimized for the production and development of skillful engineers that are highly valued in the workforce.

BackgroundBystanders often hesitate when rendering first aid to females, particularly it requires disrobing the individual (Leary et al, 2018). In addition to the delayed application of first aid, the lifesaver’s actual task performance may also be less effective than when treating injured males. This can occur, for example, when the lifesaver does not fully expose the wound (Bell et al., 2020). The Army has invested heavily in the acquisition of realistic patient manikins for training combat medicine skills. However, given logistical constraints, it will be difficult to acquire an equal number of female patient manikins. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and test a low-cost manikin “Gender Retrofit Kit” (GRK). The GRK included a breast “vest” that is affixed to the torso, a realistic vagina that is affixed to the groin, a wig, facial makeup, and instructions for “feminizing” the manikin’s appearance. MethodWe recruited a convenience sample of 36 Combat Lifesavers and Combat Medics who were completing their recurrent annual training. At the end of their scheduled training, the participants were invited to practice three medical procedures (treatment of penetrating trauma to the leg via tourniquet, treatment of gunshot wound via application of a chest seal, and treatment of tension pneumothorax via needle chest decompression). Of the three medical procedures, only the last two required disrobing the patient. Therefore, we hypothesized that if performance issues were to occur, they would be localized here. The participants practiced the three procedures using two different manikin types: a standard male manikin and the GRK-outfitted manikin. The order of manikin presentation was counterbalanced. Measures of task quality, task completion times, and usability questionnaires were collected. Results and ConclusionsThe sample was primarily male (78%), and included nearly equal numbers of Combat Lifesavers (42%) and Combat Medics (44%). A post-simulation questionnaire suggested no significant mean differences between the standard vs. GRK manikins with regard to the simulators’ perceived realism, anatomical correctness, or ability to provide meaningful skills practice. However, statistically higher mean scores were reported for questionnaire items that focused on the female manikin’s realistic breast tissue, realistic skin texture, and feminine facial appearance. Linear mixed models were used to separately test the effects of participant gender (or job title), manikin gender, and their interaction on both task performance speed and quality. There were no statistically significant differences in task completion order or speed of task completion. All participants performed the three tasks in accordance with the Army’s MARCH-E algorithm, and all had similar completion times. With regard to the quality of task performance, the analyses revealed only one statistically significant main effect of manikin gender: the GRK manikin had a lower mean task performance score for the treatment of gunshot wounds, which required disrobing the patient to apply the chest seal. Based on the results of this exploratory study, we are prioritizing potential improvements to the GRK, and are planning a more rigorously-controlled validation study with the revised prototype. Additional implications and lessons learned will be discussed.

Most research about simulator adaptation focus on driving style and participants' comfort. However, in recent years, there is a growing interest in physiological data analysis as part of the user experience (UX) assessment. Furthermore, the application of machine learning (ML) techniques to those data may allow the automatic detection of stress and cognitive load. Previously, we noticed that new participants in experiments with our simulator were often in a constant state of tension. This prevented optimal training of our ML models as many of the collected data were not representative of a person's normal state. Our work focuses on improving driver's UX by keeping the cognitive load and stress at levels that do not interfere with the primary task of driving. We use a custom-made driving simulator as our testing platform and evaluate participants' emotional state with physiological signals, specifically electrodermal activity (EDA). EDA is the variation of the skin conductance created by sweat glands. It is linked to the sympathetic nervous system and is an indication of physiological and psychological arousal. We selected EDA because several studies have shown that it is a fast indicator of stress and cognitive load.To ensure that we are consistently collecting accurate data that could be fed to ML algorithms, we need to be able to correlate physiological reactions to external stimuli. We want to avoid them to be confused with general tension. Therefore, we need to determine the time it takes for most participants to physiologically adapt to our simulator. In this between-subjects study, we examined the impact of short time (ca. 10 min) exposures to the simulation and compared it with a longer exposure period (ca. 35 min).Another problem we faced was that some participants were too indisposed by driving in the simulator to complete testing sessions. Therefore, we needed to find a way to discriminate them during the recruitment process. Literature has shown that there might be a link between motion sickness and simulator sickness and in this study, we searched for a correlation between the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire (MSSQ) and the self-reported simulator sickness using the simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ).For our investigation, we recruited 22 people through an agency. They were divided in two groups. Group A (short-time exposures) had 10 participants between 25 and 69 years old (M=49.5; SD=17.1, 5 women, 5 men) and group B (long-time exposure) had 12 people between 28 and 65 years old (M=43; SD=12.8, 5 women, 7 men). We requested from the agency to recruit only active drivers of automatic transmissions cars as our simulator mimics this type of vehicle.Motion sickness susceptibility and discomfort felt in the simulator are moderately correlated. The coefficient value is 0.51. The number of participants of our study being small, further research is necessary to determine if the MSSQ can be used as a discriminator in the recruitment phase. In addition, we can conclude that a longer exposure of 35 min results overall in better physiological adaptation.

Aim/Purpose. The problem statement in the proposed study focuses on that, despite the growing recognition that teenagers need to undergo security awareness training, little is known about the impacts security training experts believe implementing a mandatory gamified security awareness training curriculum in public middle schools will have on the long-term security behavior of students in Texas. Background. This study was guided by the research question: What are the impacts security training experts believe implementing a mandatory gamified security awareness training curriculum in public middle schools will have on the long-term security behaviors of students in Texas? The study gathers opinions from experts on the impacts of security awareness training on students. Methodology. Our research used semi-structured interviews with twelve experts chosen through the use of purposive sampling. The population for the study consisted of experts in the fields of security awareness training for and teaching middle school-aged children. Candidates were recruited through the Cyber-Texas Foundation and snowball sampling techniques. Contribution. The research contributed to the body of knowledge by using interviews to explore the impacts of security awareness training on middle school students based on the opinions and views of the teachers and instructors who work with middle school students. Findings. The findings of this study demonstrate that middle school is an ideal time to provide cybersecurity training and will impact student behaviors by making them more conscious of cyber threats and preparing them to be more tech-savvy professionals. The research also showed that well-designed cybersecurity games with real-world application combined with traditional teaching techniques can help students develop positive habits. The research also suggests that teachers possess the skills to teach cybersecurity classes and the classes can be integrated into the current school day without the need for any significant changes to existing daily schedules. Recommendations for Practitioners. A well-design gamification-based curriculum implemented in Texas Middle Schools, combined with traditional teaching techniques and repeated over an extended time period, will impact students’ behaviors by making them more able to recognize and respond to cyber risks and will transform them into more secure and tech-savvy members of society. Recommendations for Researchers. The research shows middle school instructors and technology experts believe the implementation of a security awareness training program in middle schools is both possible and practical, while also beneficial to the students. The recommendation is to encourage researchers to explore ways to build curricula and games capable of appealing to students and implementing the instruction into school programs. Impact on Society. Demonstrating that training provided in middle school will make lasting impacts and improvements to student behaviors benefits children and their families in the short-term and workplaces in the long-term. The development of a more security-conscious workforce can reduce the significant number of data breaches and cyber attacks resulting from the poor security habits of companies’ users. Future Research. Future research that will add significant value to the body of knowledge includes testing the effectiveness of habit-shaping games to determine whether existing long-term games maintain student interest. Qualitative studies could interview parents of teenagers using habit-shaping games to determine the effectiveness of the applications. Another qualitative study could interview teachers to determine how teachers’ ages affect their comfort level teaching technology classes. Both studies could provide valuable insights into how to implement security awareness training in schools.

Architectural education, in the past had a grounding in a strict apprentice or pupillage method of training architects. The apprentice was someone who worked or trained under a master that transferred skill through a “hands on” approach. Architecture was regarded as one of the arts and there was no formal training to qualify one as an architect. It was through the acclaimed Vitruvius that the architectural profession was born. Vitruvius had published “Ten Books on Architecture” that led to an attempt to summarize professional knowledge of architecture and in doing so became the first recognizable architect. The architectural profession spread throughout Europe in the mid-16th century and the builder and architect became two distinct characters. Although architecture had become a profession, it wasn’t up until the late 17th century that architecture became an academic pursuit through an institutionalized educational system known as École des Beaux Arts, however the pursuit of a strict academic scholar was not the focus. At the beginning of the 1800’s, The University of Berlin in Germany forged the fundamental research and scholarly pursuit. Architecture, like the professions of medicine, law etc. became a system of academic pursuit where professors concentrated deeply on academics first and professional work second. It is through the lens of history we can decipher how architecture became an academic discipline almost de-voiding it of its vocational nature. In its current standing, various universities place a high emphasis on research output from their academic staff. Presently, architecture schools in South Africa recruit lecturers on their academic profiles, rather than their vocational experience. The approach of which has devalued the input of industry into education. It has been noted that there has been an increase in an academic pursuit rather than a professional one for the lecturers that teach architecture. This research explores the views of academics on architectural education, teaching methods and the importance of practice at South African universities. The authors of this research provide an auto-ethnographic insight into their invaluable experience of being academics at two large Universities in South Africa and concurrently run successful practices. The research makes use of a mixed method approach of secondary data from literature and semi-structured interviews posed to academics. Initial findings reveal that academics are pushing the industry to play a part in the education of architects; however, the extent must be determined. If industry plays a role in the education of architects, what factors are considered and how does this inter-twine with the academic nature of training? What strategies are academics employing to make sure students are vocationally well trained and academically capable? Another important question to ask is what qualities make an academic architect in the 21st century?

In 2022, the on-site multi-component intervention of the project “Neck Exercise for Productivity (NEXpro)” demonstrated effectiveness in reducing pain and enhancing well-being among office workers. However, the shift towards a virtual and remote work setting necessitates the adaption of interventions like NEXpro for independent use, irrespective of time and location. Thus, we developed a virtual version of the NEXpro intervention.Purpose: Our aim was to implement and pilot a virtual version of the NEXpro intervention – specifically, a virtual brief movement intervention designed to reduce musculoskeletal pain and improve well-being.Methods: This observational study was conducted from October to December 2022. We recruited 22 employees from the University of Bern, Switzerland, without severe neck pain. The intervention consisted of a 6-week smartphone application-based movement program with 10 exercises designed to strengthen neck and back muscles. Throughout the intervention period, participants completed daily electronic diary forms. These forms assessed self-reported neck and back pain (each on a Visual Analogue Scale VAS from 0=no pain to 10=maximum pain), muscle and joint flexibility (VAS from 0=bad flexibility to 10=good flexibility), and physical and mental well-being (each on a VAS from 0=bad well-being to 10=good well-being). Additionally, participants documented the number of training sessions (i.e., training adherence). We conducted multilevel regression analyses for all outcomes of interest, including neck pain, back pain, flexibility of muscles and joints, physical well-being, and mental well-being.Results: Data from 22 participants (mean age: 33.36 years, 90.90% female) resulted in 392 daily electronic diary reports. The most frequent reported areas of pain were the neck (90.90%), shoulders (81.80%), upper back (72.70%), and lower back (68.20%). Participants demonstrated an average training adherence of 1.45 training days per week. The correlation between the presence of back and neck pain was high (r=0.69, p<.001). Multilevel regression analyses indicated a positive linear trend, with significant improvements in neck pain (B=-0.02), back pain (B=-0.03), muscle flexibility (B=0.02), physical well-being (B=0.04), and mental well-being (B=0.03, all p-values<.01). The individual number of training sessions during the intervention period showed a significant positive association with back pain (B=0.11, p<.05). Regarding the implementation process, it is noteworthy that the reminder function for training and questionnaires did not function properly. Conclusion: Overall, the implementation of the smartphone application was successful, with minor technical issues. The study demonstrated that the smartphone application can be used as a brief movement intervention to reduce musculoskeletal pain and increase well-being in knowledge workers. Importantly, the intervention effect in reducing neck pain was comparable to the on-site multi-component NEXpro intervention. However, it's important to acknowledge that training adherence was nearly half as much as observed in the NEXpro study. This insight underscores the need for continued development and refinement of the brief virtual movement intervention. The study's findings serve as a foundation for future developments aimed at optimizing training adherence and maximizing the effectiveness of the smartphone application in reducing musculoskeletal pain and enhancing well-being among knowledge workers.

Educational systems have to adapt to latest IT development and student's behavior regarding internet usage, as beyond traditional education the "virtual environment" provides excellent opportunities for both teaching and learning. Such opportunities cannot be ignored by universities as learning also enters the globalized market. Therefore, an ever-increasing number of students are ready to acquire competences and abilities for a globalized work market. The aim of this exploratory research is to investigate students' perceptions towards their readiness to access and use e-learning technologies in order to become experts in their profession. Empirical research consists of in depth interviews with students from a Technical University in Romania that engaged in an improvement of the learning process through the use of e-learning platform (such as Moodle). Based on e-learning operational definition an interview guide was developed. Formal in-depth interviews were performed by students that received special training to reduce bias and enable more sincere opinions from respondents as compared with an academic-lead interview. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed in order to identify the key factors that influence student's perception regarding the use of e-learning as well as the main advantages and disadvantages as perceived by the students. Data collections based on a convenient sample. In order to ensure sample representativeness students were recruited to belong to five distinct groups: Those that have high grades and receive bursary (merit), those with good grades but just below the bursary threshold (up to one point below), students with poor academic performance and no bursary, those that work (part-time or full time) and those that never worked. Analysis of interviews transcript revealed the key factors that influence student perceptions regarding the use of e-learning as well as the main advantages and disadvantages as perceived by the students. Such results are valuable and may be used by the University and Faculty management as a real support to design an adequate strategy to enhance the benefits of using virtual learning environments and represents the bases for a new quantitative study regarding students' perceptions of e-learning.

Multifunctional Large-Area Displays (LAD) have become an integral part of modern airplane cockpits, offering pilots flexible access to flight controls and mission-critical information. The modern glass cockpit paradigm is expected to reduce the workload of pilots by reducing the complexity and clutter of traditional cockpit layouts and improve their situational awareness by providing flexible access to rich information through the interface. On the other hand, the new paradigm has led to interaction design challenges in utilizing the affordances of the novel interface components, presenting barriers agains effective use of the interface by the pilots. In the present study, we report empirical investigations of such a LAD interface and its learnability via behavioral performance, established upon the neuroergonomics approaches, such as eye tracking and optical brain imaging measurements. Two test pilots, who had prior experience in traditional cockpit layouts were recruited to perform flight tasks in a flight simulator incorporating a LAD touch screen to interact with basic flight instruments of a trainer jet. The pilots were first given standardized training to familiarize with the basic information layout and features of the LAD interface. Following the initial training, both flew a scenario in the simulator that included various tasks (e.g., functional layout assignment, setting communication parameters, monitoring barometric settings and fuel levels, etc.) over the LAD interface for the before take-off, taxi, take off, climb, level flight, approach, and landing phases. The Pupil Labs Invisible mobile eye tracker and the fNIR Imager 1100 system were used to monitor the pilots’ eye movements and prefrontal oxygenation changes during the flight. Two weeks later, the tasks were replicated for the learnability assessment. The results indicated that pilots’ task completion times decreased for the majority of the tasks, accompanied by an increase in eye fixation durations, a decrease in the number of fixations, and a decrease in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation. Overall, these results suggest supporting evidence for the learnability of the new interface paradigm through task measurements in multiple scenarios.

"Mobile Phone Sensor-Based Detection of Subjective Cannabis “High” in Young Adults: A Feasibility Study in Real-World Settings." Aim: Acute cannabis intoxication can impair motor skills and cognitive functions. Given possible impairment related to acute cannabis intoxication, we explored whether mobile phone-based sensors (e.g., GPS, text/phone logs) can detect episodes of acute cannabis intoxication (subjective “high” state) as self-reported in natural environments by young adults. Methods: Young adults (ages 18-25), who reported cannabis use at least twice per week, were recruited by research registry and Craigslist to participate in a mobile phone data collection study (up to 30 days) in Pittsburgh, PA (2017-2019). Participants responded to fixed time phone surveys (3 times/day) and self-initiated reports of cannabis use (start/stop time, rating of subjective high: 0-10, 10=very high). Our mobile AWARE app continuously collected phone sensor data, which was segmented into 5-minute windows for analysis. We built and tested multiple machine learning classifiers (e.g., Support Vector Machine, Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM)) on training (60%), validation (20%), and test (20%) datasets to determine which classifier performed best in distinguishing subjective cannabis “high” (rating=1-10) vs “not high” (rating=0). To minimize the influence of imbalanced data on model performance in the training dataset, we used both over-sampling with Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) and random under-sampling of the majority class, so that both classes (“high”, “not-high”) had the same number of training samples. We also tested the importance of time features (i.e., day of week, time of day: morning, afternoon, evening) relative to smartphone sensor data only on model performance, since time features alone might predict “routines” in cannabis use. Results: Young adults (N=57; 58% female; mean age=19.82 [SD=1.76]; 71.92% White, 15.78% Black, 12.28% Asian and other ethnicity) reported 451 episodes of cannabis use, mean subjective high rating=3.77 (SD=2.64). The sensor dataset included 1,648 datapoints representing reports of subjective ""high"" and 60,580 data points representing ""not high"" reports. For the two time-based features only model, the LGBM classifier had 91% accuracy in detecting subjective cannabis intoxication (vs “not-high”) in the test dataset (Area Under the Curve [AUC]=0.75). Combining smartphone sensor data with the two time-based features (day of week, time of day) improved model performance, with 95% accuracy (AUC=0.93), indicating that smartphone features contribute unique information, and that time features further improve model performance in detecting rating of subjective cannabis ""high"". Among the 102 phone sensor features entered into the analyses (smartphone sensors + time model), some of the most important features (the top 2 were the time features) included travel (GPS: smaller travel radius within a day when feeling ""high”), movement (e.g., smaller number of activity changes when feeling ""high”), and communication/sociability (e.g., increased phone usage interactions, greater voice and noise level around individuals). Conclusion: Results from this proof-of-concept study indicate the feasibility of using phone sensors to detect effects of cannabis intoxication in the natural environment in a population-based model among young adults. Mobile phone sensors show promise for automated and continuous detection of cannabis use in daily life in a sample of young adults, with potential implications for triggering the delivery of just-in-time interventions to minimize marijuana-related harm.
