The evolution of mobile communication systems to 3G and beyond introduces requirements for flexible, customized, and ubiquitous multimedia service provision to mobile users. One must be able to know at any given time the network status, the user location, the profiles of the various entities (users, terminals, network equipment, services) involved and the policies that are employed within the system. Namely, the system must be able to cope with a large amount of context information. The present paper focuses on location and context awareness in service provisioning and proposes a flexible and innovative model for user profiling. The innovation is based on the enrichment of common user profiling architectures to include location and other contextual attributes, so that enhanced adaptability and personalization can be achieved. For each location and context instance an associated User Profile instance is created and hence, service provisioning is adapted to the User Profile instance that better apply to the current context. The generic model, the structure and the content of this location- and context-sensitive User Profile, along with some related implementation issues, are discussed.

Purpose Many features constitute an adaptive system such as user model, interface specification, business functionalities and service implementation. Context awareness is an important facet of service oriented application creation dealing with the gathering, use and representation of context information. Generally, user interfaces and services communities work separately on the adaptation process and do not converge. The aim of this work is to manage the system’s functionalities and the user interface that delivers data to the relevant consumer early since the design phase until the code generation. Design/methodology/approach The authors discuss how a unified method based on a model-driven architecture for adaptive user interface and pervasive service creation eases the work of designers and developers, limits incompatibility issues and supports dynamic generation of systems adapted to different contexts of use. Findings The proposed approach is able to support a semi-automatic ubiquitous application generation with service, behavior, presentation and content adaptation. Originality/value In this paper, the authors tackle context-awareness at two levels: system functionalities and user interface generation. The authors also tackle adaptation at the specification and implementation levels.

A comparative evaluation of two user guides—the document traditionally used by a company and a model document designed on the basis of research results and recommendations—was carried out using a number of complementary approaches focusing on the user. The quality and suitability of these documents for the target audience were assessed in terms of content, structure, presence of certain organizational devices (such as headings) and pictures included. The results revealed that the model document was more attractive, more efficient, and better adapted to users' needs, thanks to its modular organization (being structured according to “functions”), a large number of pictures, the presence of headings, and rationalization of the vocabulary used.

This is the latest article in a series of research on the family-centered design concept. The theoretical context was revisited and expounded to support its usefulness in conjunction with a user-centered design approach within distinct application domains. A very important contribution is applied through the development of the instruments—website capture, a public testing platform, results processing and the Web Content Accessibility Guide 2.1 recommendation tool—to conduct unmoderated remote testing of user interfaces that corresponds to the requirements of general digitalization efforts as well as the response to current and future health risks. With this set of instruments, an experiment was conducted to address the differences in usage, and performance-wise and user-based evaluation methods, of the eDavki public tax portal, among two generations, adults and elderly citizens, and between an original and an adapted user interface that respects accessibility and other recommendations. The differences found are further discussed and are congruent to particularities that have been modified within interfaces.

This Note explores the future of interactive computer service provider (ICSP) liability for user-generated content under the Communications Decency Act (CDA) after Roommates.com II. Roommates.com II held that a housing website was not entitled to immunity under § 230 of the CDA from federal Fair Housing Act claims, in part because providing preselected answers to a mandatory questionnaire rendered the site an "information content provider" at least partially responsible for creation or development of answers. After examining the historical and legislative origins of ICSP immunity for user-generated content under 47 U.S. C. § 230, this Note argues that courts should generally evaluate ICSP immunity from claims arising out of both entirely and partially user-generated content on the basis of whether the ICSP is the sole information content provider Section 230's focus on which party "provides" the essential content and the statutory definition of "information content provider" support this interpretation. This Note further argues, however that Congress should amend § 230 to limit immunity in circumstances where the ICSP is an "information content provider" with respect to an objectionable housing advertisement and specifically redefine "information content provider" to include the use of ICSP created dropdown answers to ICSP required questions. This proposal is narrowly adapted to better serve the purposes of the Fair Housing Act and § 230 than the current statutory language because it defines the scope of immunity to balance the conflicting goals of the two statutes.

Currently, the democratization of wireless communication means coupled with the advanced technological hardware can offer portable devices that fit in the hand with a very large capacity of computation such as PDAs, mobile phones and even wireless sensors. The users' preferences, in which the document is presented, may need to be considered because the adaption of multimedia content through them is an important aspect of Quality of Service. Our research work focuses on the adaptation of multimedia documents with a strong interest on the interaction based on the user preferences. In this paper, we propose formal definitions of concepts related to the technical adaptation that selects a relevant policy in order to perform an adapted document in the situation where conflicts are detected between the heterogeneity of multimedia document properties and the user needs. We present also an architecture for adapting multimedia contents based on the preferences and we develop a user preference interface. We illustrate the proposed approach with a case study.

Media platforms today benefit from: (1) discretion to organize content, (2) algorithms for curating user-posted content, and (3) absolution from liability. This favorable regulatory environment results from the current legal framework, which distinguishes between intermediaries and content providers. This distinction is ill-adapted to the modern social media landscape, where platforms deploy powerful data-driven algorithms to play an increasingly active role in shaping what people see, and where users supply disconnected bits of raw content as fodder. Today's platforms have license to monetize whatever content they like, moderate if and when it aligns with their corporate objectives, and curate their content however they wish.

Summary Objectives: To develop a general structure for semantic image analysis that is suitable for content-based image retrieval in medical applications and an architecture for its efficient implementation. Methods: Stepwise content analysis of medical images results in six layers of information modeling incorporating medical expert knowledge (raw data layer, registered data layer, feature layer, scheme layer, object layer, knowledge layer). A reference database with 10,000 images categorized according to the image modality, orientation, body region, and biological system is used. By means of prototypes in each category, identification of objects and their geometrical or temporal relationships are handled in the object and the knowledge layer, respectively. A distributed system designed with only three core elements is implemented: (i) the central database holds program sources, processing scheme descriptions, images, features, and administrative information about the workstation cluster; (ii) the scheduler balances distributed computing; and (iii) the web server provides graphical user interfaces for data entry and retrieval, which can be easily adapted to a variety of applications for content-based image retrieval in medicine. Results: Leaving-one-out experiments were distributed by the scheduler and controlled via corresponding job lists offering transparency regarding the viewpoints of a distributed system and the user. The proposed architecture is suitable for content-based image retrieval in medical applications. It improves current picture archiving and communication systems that still rely on alphanumerical descriptions, which are insufficient for image retrieval of high recall and precision.

Content analysis is a well-established and widely used research method. In its early form, it was used extensively in the quantitative analysis of newspapers, and its applications later evolved to include electronic media such as radio and television. It has recently been applied to digital media, including the Internet. However, the use of content analysis in analyzing online content has been chiefly applied to static content, such as ‘static’ websites, in the early days of the Internet. Studies that involve its use in analyzing dynamic Internet content—for example, content that resides behind databases—are relatively much less common. This article is not written as a research paper per se. This article will instead discuss reflections on the efficacy of content analysis as a research method when applied to dynamic content such as DRs by using a previous study, which has applied content analysis to the dynamic content of digital repositories (DRs), as a case study. The previous study used as the basis for this article had applied content analysis to several DRs using manual counting by the researcher. In the process, several idiosyncrasies in terms of the way institutions populate their DRs with digital objects and the user metadata to facilitate discoverability of those digital objects were encountered that have introduced some ‘complication.’ This article will focus on how content analysis, as a research method, can be adapted to account for those idiosyncrasies to produce better results. This article will also identify the limitations and challenges of content analysis in dynamic online environments and offer some suggested approaches.

Today, mobile technology is part of everyday life and activities and the mobile ecosystems are blossoming, with smartphones and tablets being the major growth drivers. The mobile phones are no longer just another device, we rely on their capabilities in work and in private. We look to our mobile phones for timely and updated information and we rely on this being provided any time of any day at any place. Nevertheless, no matter how much you trust and love your mobile phone the quality of the information and the user experience is directly associated with the sources and presentation of information. In this perspective, our activities, interactions and preferences help shape the quality of service, content and products we use. Context-aware systems use such information about end-users as input mechanisms for producing applications based on mobile, location, social, cloud and customized content services. This represents new possibilities for extracting aggregated user-centric information and includes novel sources for context-aware applications. Accordingly, a Design Research based approach has been taken to further investigate the creation, presentation and tailoring of user-centric information. Through user evaluated experiments findings show how multi-dimensional context-aware information can be used to create adaptive solutions tailoring the user experience to the users’ needs. Research findings in this work; highlight possible architectures for integration of cloud computing services in a heterogeneous mobile environment in future context-aware solutions. When it comes to combining context-aware results from local computations with those of cloud based services, the results provide findings that give users tailored and adapted experiences based on the collective efforts of the two.

AbstractThis paper presents a user-centered approach to translating techniques and insights from AI explainability research to developing effective explanations of complex issues in other fields, on the example of COVID-19. We show how the problem of AI explainability and the explainability problem in the COVID-19 pandemic are related: as two specific instances of a more general explainability problem, occurring when people face in-transparent, complex systems and processes whose functioning is not readily observable and understandable to them (“black boxes”). Accordingly, we discuss how we applied an interdisciplinary, user-centered approach based on Design Thinking to develop a prototype of a user-centered explanation for a complex issue regarding people’s perception of COVID-19 vaccine development. The developed prototype demonstrates how AI explainability techniques can be adapted and integrated with methods from communication science, visualization and HCI to be applied to this context. We also discuss results from a first evaluation in a user study with 88 participants and outline future work. The results indicate that it is possible to effectively apply methods and insights from explainable AI to explainability problems in other fields and support the suitability of our conceptual framework to inform that. In addition, we show how the lessons learned in the process provide new insights for informing further work on user-centered approaches to explainable AI itself.

AbstractThis paper demonstrates the co-creation process of digital mobility and delivery services applied in the Inclusive Digital Mobility Solutions (INDIMO) project mainly based on the local Communities of Practice (CoP) drawing on the knowledge and experience of their members to propose solutions adapted to their needs and interests. In the context of the INDIMO project, CoPs were established at five pilot locations and included users, mobility service providers, (digital) developers, user interface designers, and policymakers associated with each pilot. This chapter aims to report on the experience of the INDIMO project in employing the CoP as a tool to integrate the development of digital mobility and delivery services and the contribution and cooperation of different actors such as operators, developers, policymakers, and organizations representing the end-users. The creation of common spaces such as the INDIMO communities of practice was fundamental to enhance cooperation among different actors, co-design inclusive digital mobility solutions, and empower the participants in using the above-mentioned services. This chapter shows the development of the CoP process, the activities and challenges, and its role in making digital mobility services inclusive and universally usable.

The available technique of a Web-enabled material database was adapted to a new Gasket Data Bank (Gasket-DB) in the frame of an European research project PERL (Pressure Equipment, Reduction of Leak rate: gasket parameters measurements). Main content are gasket characteristics determined on all gasket types defined in the new European gasket standard series EN 1514, part 1 to 7: • actual gasket parameters in ENV 1591-2 (public access), • proposed gasket parameters to define more reliable values (restricted access), • certified manufacturers gasket data (restricted access), • gasket parameter ranges (public access). Data retrieval is providing intelligent user guidance. Data entry is carried out by Joint Research Centre (JRC) Petten, NL, by means of standardized format (Excel file with different sheets, reflecting the table structure of the database). The prototype database and the user interface can easily be extended and customized to the needs and requirements of the engineering gasket society, e.g. link to customer documentation, databases, services like design calculation tools.

Development of the internet conditioned the evolution of marketing. Nowadays, organizations have relocated their marketing activities on the internet, so digital marketing comes into focus, as the most influential branch of marketing. A progress of digital marketing activities established the appearance of different digital marketing elements, among which social media marketing becomes more prevalent. Social media marketing is an inevitable element of digital marketing strategy and nowadays business. In order to complement social media marketing activities, graphic design is used as a crucial part of a content strategy. This paper focuses on the importance of effective visual content for social media and the usage of different tools that can facilitate and improve its creation. Social media users interact with visual content. In order to achieve higher engagement, social media posts are enriched with compelling visuals. Social media have become a real field for competition in terms of creating competitive content and attracting more users’ attention. The aim of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of online graphic design tools that are used for creating visual content adapted to the requirements of communication on social networks. Given the importance of visuals in social media marketing, an abundance of tools are created with different features in order to support content design. These online platforms offer complete customization options, a wide range of different editing tools and templates and diverse functionalities. Visual content, through social media platforms, boosts user awareness of existing brands and makes it easier for users to associate with the organization. Through a relevant literature review in the field of social media marketing, the importance of visual elements and graphic design in online marketing communication is emphasized. In addition, this paper provides a comparative analysis of the most commonly used online tools and platforms that provide graphic design solutions and increase the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns.

The Augmented Reality (AR) is a computer technology which allows that on a camera live-view stream different computer-generated content is overlapped, in a dynamic manner, tracking the user's movements and change of view. AR is considered to support a new immersive visualization paradigm and a natural human-computer interaction. That is why the AR technology is adopted in educational projects to mediate an enhanced visual and cognitive perception. Recently it is used for entertainment purposes, including for creation of AR games, or in public installations using kinetic input devices. On the other side, the educational games are modern learning and training strategies for engaging learners and stimulate problem-solving learning through a game-like scenario. The AR technology is very promising and stable enough and in late 2012 the development tools and platforms had an unprecedented evolution, in relation with HTML 5, the new web standard for rich interactive content. Nevertheless there are only a few Augmented Reality implementations having a significant educational and learning impact. The paper analyzes how serious game concepts and design principles can be applied or adapted to AR, and how AR technology affordances can be leveraged in order to implement a new class of serious or simulation games. Specific educational uses and learning outcomes are analyzed. We focused on the case of Mobile Augmented Reality educational games that should combine graphics and sounds with user mobility, in situated and social learning contexts. The authors based their analysis on existing implementation examples but also present a concept for an AR simulation game for Android devices for teaching basic 3D graphics principles and develop at students the 3D spatial visualization.

Persisting hunger and malnourishment continue to be a problem of global concern, which recent climate change, as well as environmental and socio-economic crises and their impacts along the food chain further exacerbate. Earth observation (EO) holds the capacity to deliver large temporal and spatial coverage information that allow for better decision-making in food production and distribution. Furthermore, the rapidly increasing amount of freely available data and tools potentially enable an expanding user community to bring this information into practice. However, more people need access to EO education to realize this potential. EO Connect (funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research) addresses this demand by developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger. Since a conventional course can barely reflect the comprehensiveness of SDG #2 regarding both content and the people involved in achieving the goal, the Zero Hunger MOOC leverages modern learning approaches in a non-linear, adaptive learning environment to cater to a large audience and diverse target groups, and to their different scopes and levels of desired learning outcomes. The use of micro-content, drip-feeding and feedback-guided course development shall ensure maximum effectiveness. To accomplish this ambitious endeavour, the Zero Hunger MOOC is developed with a community of stakeholders from the realms of EO, education, information technology, and food security. It builds on contents from this community which are adapted, streamlined and assembled to course modules, as well as on the expertise from the over 20 contributing universities, space agencies, national institutions and international organizations. While the Zero Hunger MOOC contributes to bridging the gap between the available EO technology and its application to increase food security, it likewise promotes stronger stakeholder connection in EO education.

COVID-19 has forced universities worldwide to rapidly change their lectures to a distance setting, leaving students to a high degree on their own and engaging in informal learning. In this regard, user-generated content-based Internet platforms (UGC platforms) such as Wikipedia, YouTube, and Facebook provide users with openly accessible support for various informal learning needs. This research in progress applies a two-staged qualitative interview study with students comparing the situation before and during the Covid-19 pandemic by applying an affordance perspective. We seek to offer differential insights on perceived affordances of UGC platforms and conditions facilitating their actualization. Based on an adapted Grounded Theory-based analysis, the stage-1 interviews have already shown the viability of this analytic approach and that students perceive and actualize a range of affordances of UGC platforms. Facilitating conditions for affordance actualization embrace two main themes: default behavioral and motivational conditions. In stage 2, the results will be verified, and new insights into changes compared to the pre-pandemic state will be derived.

The main purpose of this study was to explore teaching and learning resources (TLR) specific to food safety & consumer protection disciplines, in order to help students, lifelong learning food professionals and consumers to achieve their learning goals. The potential of different types of TLR related to working conditions as well as to students' needs and academic tradition of food science and engineering disciplines was assessed. Personalized learning approach, essential for mature learners, pointed out to the importance of appropriate design and use of e-learning resources. A case study was carried out on the design of a website module on food safety, developed as part of an online tool for adult education. The content template was replicated and adapted, by the national teams from all 27 EU member states, under a European grant. The e-learning tool content was organized into four sections and designed intending to "bring the outside world into the learning space". This practical and user-friendly approach included real life situations along the food trajectory "from farm to fork" for science-based risk management. The final section, containing fact sheets for each food group, synthesizes main physical, chemical and biological hazards. There are useful ready to use handouts. Food safety tips, glossary, quizzes and external links complete the profile of each section, providing the module with assessment characteristics. Developing eTLR specific to food safety disciplines also provides feedback on the relevance of the research endeavour and proved to be useful to develop fresh thinking on food safety research topics.

The field of Earth observation has been undergoing a tremendous transformation for several years. From commercial data that used to be processed only by a circle of specialists, we are now in an era where numerous high-quality satellite data can be made available for free and used by diverse user groups in many applications. It is therefore of fundamental importance for new users to understand and use these data in an application-specific way, and teaching concepts need to be adapted accordingly. Specifically for the field of radar remote sensing, several activities already exist that intend to adjust educational offers with needs of the market place and to provide hands-on material for self-paced learning in many fields of application. At university level however, many courses still happen in a traditional classroom way, the lecturer being the principal source of information. We present here a blended-learning approach aiming the integration of high-quality eLearning material in traditional face-to-face courses to enhance the teaching and learning experience. The approach can be resumed in two main goals: 1) the specific integration of eLearning elements on a learning platform for a better preparation and follow-up of the course content by the students; 2) the creation of new eLearning content by the students in a peer-to-peer approach. For the first goal, existing content from Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are broken down into learning modules and supplemented with external digital learning content in order to best match the needs of the face-to-face course week by week. This prevents students from being overwhelmed by the enormous volume of online educational resources of the MOOCs and allows a better preparation of students for the current content of the lecture. For the second goal, a further deepening of what has been learned takes place through active co-creation of new digital content. This is based on the principle of the pyramid of learning that the best way to remember something is to explain it yourself. In this way, students who create new content from what they have learned should be able to remember it much longer as if they just listen to it. This blended learning educational model is conducted successfully since two years at university level with bachelor and master students and is being enriched regularly with new material, both from the open educational resources and students contributions

Though benefits of Experience Sampling (ES) for experience design and research are apparent, the method has not been widely used in the field. As for the reasons, the following are prominent: 1) methodological issues as conventional ES obtains contextual experience information from the participants’ description of the context), and 2) a lack of theoretical framework enabling researchers to carry systematical analysis and extraction of meaningful experiences. In order to deal with these issues, the researchers have created an adapted ES model, named ‘Context-Specific Experience Sampling’, by which integration of a rigorous data collection and analysis processes is made possible. The model provides explanations of how to gather context-specific user experience information and extract key themes and attributes from the data pool. This approach, manifesting divergent-to-convergent features, is described as ‘experience pooling, sorting, and extracting’ which fall under the concept of ‘experience processing’. This paper details the structure and procedure of the model illustrating it with examples from a small scale lighting ambiance study of fashion stores.

The present work involves the development of a learning model for the analysis of data from telecommunication and social networks for devices that make voice calls and data sessions, using Business Intelligence concepts and tools. The paper has a multi/interdisciplinary character, calling for e-learning, telecommunication, database, programming, IT applications and social/business networks. Business Intelligence (BI) refers to those data analysis systems by integrating them into a platform that allows the association of information through data transformation operations. For this analysis to be effective, it is necessary to identify and define the required quality indicators (KPIs: Key Performance Indicators) and the desired associations with them, which can be made in the BI platform. The information extraction operations can be done in the SQL queries area or when data is uploaded to the BI platform, taking into account the following factors: database queries efficiency, transformation efficiency at BI platform level, and available hardware capacity for calculations. There is a balance between the volume of SQL queries, taking into account the complexity of the queries (number and type of joins) and the size of the files to be imported into the platform. Consideration may also be given to how new data is added to source files for the BI platform. The applications developed for this purpose allow the analysis of KPIs by applying filters that make easier to understand the general problems of an application and identify network areas where possible degradation or shortcomings are observed. Developing a solution for analyzing these aspects of radio measurements and comparing operators on various criteria for voice and data and application testing comes as a response to the need to be able to analyze and interpret a huge amount of data accumulated over very long periods (years) and to identify the main elements that can lead to improved network performance. BI analysis is addressed to business managerial levels for discovery of large deficiencies without analyzing each test, satisfying the need for interaction by allocating a minimum number of parameters associated with KPIs so that analysis and decisions taken consequently have a high impact for a company benefits. BI analysis is predominantly conducted in the telecommunications field, but the same principles can be used in other areas, and the way of working can be adapted to serve as a strong starting point in any type of analysis for which information is available at the level of a database. In order to be able to apply the BI analysis tools, databases containing information specific to the 2G, 3G and 4G technologies (GSM, WCDMA and LTE) have been developed. Databases contain tables populated with metrics representing information similar to those collected during telecommunication measurements (data generation is done through popular spreadsheet scripts with Excel support). Multiple SQL queries for denormalizing, aggregating, and transforming data have also been developed for use as a data source in the KPIs analysis, comparison, and interpretation process. In order to apply these data transformation queries in a format that facilitates further BI analysis, a C# application that exports the new content to a predefined area is made available to the BI environment (in text format). The new C# content is loaded into the QLIK Sense Desktop platform, a BI development environment where another set of data transformations, (defining legends to create geo-location features for elements) is loaded in this environment. The next step is to develop specific formulas, taking into account the new available structure to obtain KPIs with expected values and views for post-denormalization analysis. Two dashboards were developed for this purpose: voice and data tests. Configuring the development environment involves setting the connection to the location where the new content is placed, uploading these data, modifying them, creating formulas, identifying causes of value-based telecoms errors, creating a range for radio measurement values, and creating functions for geo-location of data using QLIK script syntax. It is defined a graphical interface by creating, where necessary, maps of geo-tagged data, filters, graphs, pivot tables, pie-charts, histograms, etc. across multiple display sheets, organized to contain the information specific to a particular analysis, thereby creating an analytical context in which the information required for use in the analysis is arranged adjacent, in the form of filters or graphs, the results being easier to interpret by introducing color coding formulas. The definition of special formulas and their application uses KPIs, and their development is carried out with a language specific to the development environment: QLIK Sense Desktop. Part of analyzing data in a BI environment is to interpret data and various configurations. Depending on who accesses such an environment, one can configure (in the web version) different access modes and set up visible information for each user so that a manager can access general performance sheets and an RF engineer can access specific performance sheets, both of which being designed to enhance the ability of each to interpret, decide, and improve the desired performance. Another important aspect is the low analysis time, due to the fact that the data automatically undergoes a transformation that initially had to be manually adapted. Automatic correlations that may go unnoticed, and there is also the ability to adapt and change over time. Increased efficiency comes from the fact that uncorrelated information in the database becomes correlated. BI applications refresh after each selected criterion so that the same graph shows different information if a single operator/service is selected. The paper contains detailed BI complex analysis examples for the video player in social networks: YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. In the BI environment, possible causes for the effects observed in the operations are performed, resulting in an easier interpretation of the results. This information can be valuable to departments such as Marketing/Sales, Network Operations Center, Optimization/Planning, etc. Data analysis by using a BI platform is useful when data sources are not directly correlated, allowing optimized visualization and identification of KPIs performance and metrics specifically defined for fast and efficient handling of data specific to mobile telecom operators and social networks or business networks.
