This article aims to present a new methodological protocol and a representation tool that articulates both space and time in understanding urban ambiances: temporal sections. The elaboration of this conceptual tool is based on a theoretical background dealing with the palimpsest of urban ambiances. The urban palimpsest is a metaphor underlying the dynamic of the formation process of the territory resulting from a temporal, spatial and social stratification that manifests in the lived experience. Combining urban transect, a geographical tool, and stratigraphy, a geological one, temporal sections represent the sensory experience as a palimpsest that integrates the different pasts and projects on the future. This tool provides a very specific way of immersion and opens new realm in constructing a storytelling; it proposes a rereading and writing the ambiance in depth.

Developed within the context of public space studies, the proposition applies the concept of ambiance to urban micro-space as an alternate approach to urban studies, providing a contrasting perspective to other urban disciplinary methods. Ambiance is understood here as the emerging feature of the relationship between the uses of space and the (physical and sensory) built space as it becomes meaningful when used, inhabited and built by individuals. Introducing the concept of ambiance as used by authors such as Augoyard (2010) and Thibaud (2004), allows us to avoid the problem of comparing spaces that are different in form and scale, as it focuses on the relationship between constructed/sensory space and social use. A study of three sectors of the inner district of Santiago-Chile, which where renewed in three different moments of urban public policies, is proposed to illustrate this approach. The middle-class neighborhoods and their inhabitants are studied in a praxeological perspective, thus, the proposition aims to discern how space shapes its use and in return how use and practice redefine, shape and re-appropriate space.

Urban design is a multifaceted process that interfaces various aspects, extending from community physical activity and health improvement to social and environmental fields. An efficient urban design requires understanding of ideas, paradigms, and research from many dimensions of knowledge, i.e. anthropology, sociology, engineering, architecture, and urban planning. The debate in this paper is based on the fact that the sociability of a society is dependent on its urban design prototype. A systemic urban design increases the opportunity for walkability, sequentially enhancing the probability of real-time social interaction. Such an urban ambiance plays a significant role in human physical and mental well-being and their behaviors. The aspects of urban space, such as sociability, walkability and overall ambiance, are appraised according to the published literature. This paper aims at collecting the already proven specifics in one piece of writing to open up avenues for further research and establish the inclusive aspects of urban design. The literature from the final decade of the 20th century to contemporary works has been considered for this instance. The research concludes that interdisciplinary engagement and participation of the public in decision-making for urban design are necessary. It recommends further exploration of the relationship of sociability, walkability and urban ambiance, and their correlation with human well-being.

The concept of “ambiance” has been shaped over the years by questioning the interactions between three attractors: architecture and the city, climatic and sound phenomena, uses and perception. Studied in pairs, each of these attractors refers to very different disciplinary fields; architecture and phenomena concern the physics of the city, architecture and uses interest sociology and uses and phenomena are rather turned to comfort. Studies concerning ambiances are therefore highly interdisciplinary and raise many questions: living spaces, urban renewal and heritage, urban prospective and the city as a stage. For this, many conceptual and technical tools are mobilized: digital tools for simulation and immersion, investigation, surveys and storytelling, prototyping, field action. What may be new in the field of academic studies is the awareness of artistic creation as a resource for the use of digital tools, storytelling and the representation of complexity through original means.

Creativity has in recent years received much attention from the research community, in relation to both technological innovation and knowledge spillovers. In the same vein, the concept of a creative class and of a creative city has gained a rising popularity. The present study aims to investigate the impacts of the urban “ambiance” on the spatial dispersion of heterogeneous types of creative people over different urban agglomerations. To that end, creative people are classified according to their profession or job class into Bohemians, creative core, and creative professionals. This article, then, seeks to relate the presence of each of these groups to the cultural ambiance of a given locality beside other moderator variables. Next, an econometric model is constructed and applied to explain the spatial distribution of creative professions in the Netherlands. Our study first maps out the spatial spread of these three creative classes in the Netherlands. Next, the shares of these creative classes are related to cultural, ecological, ethnic, and geographic characteristics of Dutch municipalities. Our results show that Bohemians and people belonging to the creative core exhibit a specific spatial pattern: they appear to be overrepresented in municipalities with a relative overconcentration of culture, nature, and ethnic diversity and with a short distance to job places.

Ambiance provides scholarly value to historic architectural precincts and complexes. Through it, the built environment − a corpus of buildings − becomes an environment with its own unique narrative. It grants us the possibility of interacting with the atmosphere of the place as it was in the epoch. However, due to the nature of modern development, living historic cities are changing dynamically. To stay in use, and thus continue their scholastic mission, historic urban areas need to be integrated into local development through either within-use adaptation or conversion to new functions. For historic barrack complexes, this usually means extensive redevelopment. The difficulty comes from accommodating quotidian use while maintaining its historiographic values, especially with historically sensitive sites. This means the designers should take the legibility of the original complex into consideration in their designs and provide suitable aids to visitors. As it turns out there is not a universal approach, instead different approaches allow preservation of various degrees of the original ambiance.

Students were challenged to propose an architectural intervention aiming at storytelling of the palimpsestic past, as well as upkeeping the unique ambiance of the place. Furthermore, students were encouraged to play with the use of the building and perception of the site. Submitted projects allowed to make a number of interesting observations.

The research referred to in the article concerns the factors influencing the perception of ordinary sonic public space and everyday sounds. Sound perception parameters, such as vegetation or sound sources, are analysed in urban public spaces. This research, which is based on my PhD project, tries to understand how urban people perceive their sonic environment and try to contribute to sonic ambiance knowledge. The research is based on a qualitative investigation conducted among 29 people. It is, on the one hand, based on questionnaires and focus groups in situ and, on the other hand, on individual interviews (in-depth interviews, sonic mind maps), and it illustrates different parameters (temporal, spatial, sensitive and individual) that influence a person’s assessment of the sound environment. This qualitative investigation is correlated with acoustic measures in two seasons. The results show, among other things, the impact of vegetation and urban fittings on sonic perception, and they underline the influence of city planning and urban fittings on sound perception in public urban spaces.

This paper analyses contribution of architecture of structures to the quality urban matrix of a building or group of buildings in an environment. It can be considered a special town planning task, and the final results and successfulness of design is judged by the time and people. The time distance of almost one century since the first Modern style buildings occurred in our parts, and some eighty years since the first such buildings were constructed in Nis, constitute a sufficiently long historical period for producing of an objective and good quality analysis of the contribution and impact of this style of architecture on the creation of urban matrix of Nis, that is, to express an opinion whether the Modern style architecture in Nis succeeded in blending with the inherited structure of the city and create new urban values and referential city ambiance.

This study examined various features of urban form, which promote sustainable development and provoke shoppers toward shopping malls. A field survey was conducted in shopping malls at Hangzhou, which is the capital city of the Zhejiang province, China. Structural equation modeling and a confirmatory factor analysis were used to measure the hypotheses. The results of this study showed that the built environment and entertainment completely mediated the relationship between ambiance and consumption, and they have a positive impact on the environment and shoppers. The built environment and entertainment are viewed as essential elements of physical and social sustainability. Real estate developers, urban planners, and shopping mall managers should consider the design features of urban form to meet sustainable development goals and to attract more shoppers. Testing these relationships via a mediating method is a novel contribution to the study of shopping malls.

Abstract Spa garden in Daruvar ‘Julius’s Park’ is the oldest spa garden in continental Croatia. The counts Jankovich and their successors created the garden during the 18th and 20th century. The garden resumed its nowadays form and surface in the time of count Julius Jankovich in the mid-19th century and it was named after him. The garden is protected as a cultural heritage. The garden’s renovation is seen as an urban, architectural and landscape unity and it attempts to affirm the missing and neglected parts of the garden, to provide technological and municipal space modernization and to make a pleasant urban garden ambiance with new facilities and high space arrangement qualities, contributing to the economic development of the local community.

The article contains both description and analysis of the processes which had been creating the urban space of Warsaw during the Interwar period (1918–1939). On the one hand, they include what is regarded as examples and symbols of modernisation (avant-garde architecture, urban planning, as well as a “state-building” monumentalism), on the other – being developed at the same time, and described as today’s terminology allows – the processes of “musealisation” (reconstruction as a conservation method, restoration of a historic urban ambiance of the town). The article also points to the continuity of both the processes in question and the ideas that constitute them, always present at times of an intense search for collective identity and spatial forms in which it is manifested (e.g. at time of the post-war reconstruction in the years 1945–1956, as well as at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries).

What makes certain places in a city fascinating, even magical? This is not about the so-called “nice city” areas, be it views of historical districts or monuments or city parks—places that are by default associated with pleasant ambiance or recreation. This essay is about places that create an immediate impression and that can become intimate, eliciting an emotional response or addressing our hidden needs. It describes research results achieved by sociology students of the Kharkiv School of Architecture in the 2017-18 academic year. The research was dedicated to urban places with a “soul,” with all of the possible shades and differences this social construct implies. The purpose of this research was to find a way to recreate the charm of places, to recreate their atmosphere and their aura in other contexts. Overall, this essay emphasizes the importance of authentic places and stresses the need to study and preserve them as a basis for the urban life of contemporary Kharkiv.

RÉSUMÉLe propos de cet article est d'introduire, de définir et de tester un modèle théorique qui puisse expliquer la fréquentation par les personnes âgées des centres d'achats urbains, conçus comme des endroits d'échanges sociaux. Nous estimons que les personnes âgées vont dans les centres d'achats pour satisfaire leurs besoins de vie sociale et de loisirs. Nous créons le néologisme « mailler » pour aller au mail ou au centre d'achat. Nous émettons ensuite l'hypothèse qu'il existe des variables individuelles, c'est-à-dire de prédisposition et des variables environnementales, c'est-à-dire d'incitation, variables qui différencient les personnes âgées adeptes de ces activités de magasinage. En nous fondant sur l'analyse de données secondaires, tirées d'un échantillonnage de 300 personnes âgées montréalaises vivant à domicile, nous avons découvert que le magasinage, effectué dans trois centres d'achats de Montréal, constitue une activité pour plus de 67 pour cent des sujets de l'échantillon. Certaines variables sont à relier à cette activaté: variables de prédisposition telles que l'âge, le sexe, l'éducation et aussi le sentiment de solitude et variables incitatives comme l'architecture du centre d'achat et son ambiance. En nous fondant sur ces résultats, nous pensons que ce modèle nous aide à mieux comprendre les activités de loisirs des personnes âgées demeurant à domicile.

This paper raises the questions of environmental design of facade planes in urbarchitecture, remodeling of existing bulks applying the vegetation material. Environmental interventions in general sense can render the constructed areas and structures in them less globalistic, esthetically more valuable, historically and culturally more significant and to affect the space in a way for all to feel better in it. It is possible to establish new patterns of reforming of artifact building values, as well as a model for a more creative acting in multicultural space. Natural, floral and other vegetative structures in combination with artifact forms allow a conceptually different, non-globalistic approach in which new, fuller forms create a dynamic and recognizable exterior ecourbarchitectonic space. Physical structures with environmental bulks masking the rigid, inadequate commanding geometry, improve the general conditions and atone for the urban crisis. It is our opinion that an environmental approach in formation of facade planes, be them horizontal or vertical, is an indispensable position in city-building. We are persuaded by the numerous examples in the world, where environmental-scientific analysis in the area of urban design of space produced fantastic realizations of micro and macro ambiance entities.

Charles Baudelaire employs the notion of flaneur as an idle wanderer and a passionate observer of the city life in the context of nineteenth-century Paris. Walter Benjamin in the twentieth century revisits the same notion in a slightly different manner. For Benjamin, flaneur, on the one hand, can be overwhelmed by the phantasmagoria of the city life and can develop a ‘shock experience' and on the other hand, can respond to the stimuli of the urban ambiance and can exhibit instrumental means of thinking to cope with the altered environment. In this circumstance, the latter, as Benjamin argues, is also evocative of the prospect of the flaneur’s conversion into a commodity. Following the argument of Walter Benjamin, the present paper aims to analyze the mobility and transformation of the central character, Christopher, in Julian Barnes’s novel Metroland (1980). This paper also reinforces that the character’s transformation is influenced by the societal structures as propounded by the structural Marxists like Louis Althusser.

PurposeSketching is a creative skill that most architects develop over their long period of study and is considered an effective medium for communicating imaginative thinking and conceptual ideas in architecture. As a concept, mood is generally associated with imagining specific ambiance and spatial experience during the schematic phase of the architectural design process. While most architectural research on mood revolves around post-occupancy evaluation, colour effect and lighting comfort, few studies have been conducted to systematically investigate conceptual issues related to mood imagination. Besides, there has been little attempt to appreciate sketches as a reliable conceptual data source for architectural research.Design/methodology/approachTo bridge this knowledge gap, this paper explores a semiological analysis of mood visualisation using architectural sketches. By framing the experiment within the architecture education context, the paper begins by discussing the relationship between sketching, mood and semiology in architecture. The discussion continues by highlighting methodological issues in the design of our experiment. The experiment comprised architecture students from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Following the visual and textual data derived from the experiment, two semiological analyses, namely, mood sign analysis and mood signifier analysis, were conducted to understand their imaginative thinking.FindingsThe results revealed significant preferential differences between the students on the use of specific semiotic representation and design language to conceptualise their mood idea.Originality/valueAs a preliminary experiment, this study constitutes an early attempt to further explore potential research related to architectural sketches and the creative imagination that may be beneficial to designers, art psychologists, educators and researchers alike.

Objectives: Environmental cues, such as pictures, could be helpful in improving room-finding and wayfinding abilities among older patients. The aim of this study was to identify picture categories that are preferred and easily remembered by older patients and cognitively impaired patients and which therefore might be suitable for use as environmental cues in acute care settings. Methods: Twelve pictures were presented to a sample of older patients ( n = 37). The pictures represented different categories: familiarity (familiar vs. unfamiliar), type of shot (close-up vs. wide shot), and picture content (nature vs. animal vs. urban). We tested the patients’ votes of preference and abilities to identify and immediately recall pictures. Cognitively impaired patients ( n = 14) were assessed by the abbreviated mental test and the mini mental state examination and were compared with patients without cognitive impairments ( n = 23) using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The results showed a main effect of familiarity on positive vote and recall of pictures. The absence of interaction effects of familiarity and group indicated an overall impact of familiarity on the sample. Within cognitively impaired patients, a significant difference in recall of picture content between urban (20%) and animal (9%) was found. Conclusions: Pictures, which patients were able to relate to in terms of familiarity and the characteristics urban and nature, seem to be suitable for use as environmental cues. Besides functioning as such, we assume, based on literature, that pictures could further enhance the ambiance or serve as prompts for communication and interaction.

This article examines the boredom of asylum seekers living in a refugee camp in southern Europe. It concerns the understudied yet widespread phenomenon of boredom in the detention centers and other places where people wait several months/years to obtain permits to stay in a given state (EU) and cannot work. Boredom is defined as a socially constructed feeling that is an effect of the interaction between people and institutional/organizational ambiance that lacks qualities necessary to arouse engagement. We distinguished three modalities of the phenomenon: “doing nothing,” “life in limbo,” and “strategic boredom.” We claim that the last is the most powerful phenomenon. Strategic boredom is the specific tool of strict control exercised on the asylum seekers by the administration of the camp to force them to be idle and passive. On the other hand, the dominated group uses the expected mood of boredom as a strategy to obtain the favors of camp administration; this strategy—they hope—will conclude in the obtention of a permit of stay and/or the legal status of a refugee.

<p>Nikos Andriotis, Christians and Muslims in Crete 1821-1924. A Century of Continuous Confrontation in and out of the Battlefield</p><p>This article refers to the strained relations between Christians and Muslims of Crete during the last century of their cohabitation in the island. First, it deals with the frequent upheavals of Christians against Ottoman sovereignty during the 19th century, with an emphasis to the consequences on the population breakdown and the dwelling network of Crete. Among the Muslims who were living far away from the urban centers, a large number moved towards the cities of the island or in other areas of the Ottoman Empire. This phenomenon was an overwhelming characteristic of the last decade of the 19th century. During the same decade the decrease of the Muslim population was significant and the Muslim presence in the countryside was almost annihilated. At the same time Christians, arriving from neighboring or remote areas, colonized the abandoned Muslim dwellings. The Muslims continued to live in a ambiance of insecurity until their mandatory flight in 1923-1924 during the period of the Autonomy (1898-1912) and by the annexation of Crete to Greece, in the exception of the period of time during which there was a relative calmness in the relations of the two communities. The different national aspirations of Christians and Muslims cannot exclusively interpret the violent collision of the two communities. This confrontation is from the early times characterized by economical aspiration of the Christians, mainly through the attempt of acquiring ownership of Muslim estates by legal or illegal means. This occurred mostlyi n the area of Iraklio, where the changes regarding the acquisition of urban and agriculture real estates, through transactions or encroachment, largely took place.</p>

Walau bagaimanapun, sebagaimana proses globalisasi dan urbanisasi perbandaranyang berlaku di seluruh dunia, evolusi senibina di Kelantan tidak terkecuali dan pemeliharaan nilai-nilaisejarah yang unik perlu dilakukan. Warisan senibina Kelantan hari ini kurang dihargai oleh masyarakatkerana karaktornya yang terpencil dan kurang baik. Hal ini kerana proses pengekalan bangunan warisankurang diberi perhatian dan juga kurang mendapat penekanan daripada pihak berkuasa dan masyarakatsendiri. Abstract Kelantan is situated somewhat in isolation from the industrial corridor of the west coast and far from thesphere of influence of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore. It is important to determine the forces of thestate’s urban growth determinants because urban centers in Kelantan have their unique mix of potentialsand constraints. However, as far as globalization and urbanization that are taking place worldwide, thearchitectural evolution in Kelantan is not exempted and the preservation of any unique historical valueshould be done. The heritage architecture value of Kelantan today, has not been appreciated by localfolks and society because of its isolated and poor characters which has not been maintained and wellemphasized by the authority and society themselves. Hence, the remarkable heritage property has been‘invisible’ and demolished due to negligence and time factors. Moreover, there are many historical buildingsin Kota Bharu that had been demolished for urban development purposes and the influence of modernand contemporary architecture style without considering the existing and distinctive of historical value.The growth of architectural intervention is inevitably due to society and its demands to fulfill their urbanneeds nowadays. As a result, the pattern of urban setting and heritage property had changed throughoutthe years of urbanization. Moreover, the changes have affected the ambiance of surrounding i.e. buildings(built-heritage), and streets planning and activities.

World and especially European trends of tourist economy are mainly focused on development of diversity in cultural tourism. Cultural tourism is a complex of numerous activities that enables not only the affirmation of cultural-historic motives, but also provides important resources for renewal of cultural-historic monuments, tangible and intangible heritage and resources. Today, there is no serious and ambitious country that does not prefer development of tourism in its development strategies as a planetary phenomenon and development sector. This specially refers to cultural tourism, as a competitive segment, based on local authenticity, unique areas, urban entities and ambiance, different historic layers and monuments, local tradition, myths and customs, affirmative mentality of population, geographic and ecological resources, in brief - complex and original identity of its area and its population. Cultural tourism in Montenegro has a modest tradition and only recently through valuable but sporadic initiatives and encouragements from Europe, attempts to valorize its own potentials, making them competitive through creative projects and programs. It is most certainly that the Montenegrin coast is a deeply settled part of complex Mediterranean cultural sphere that possesses certain characteristics which marks it as a unique cultural space in which different historical, geographic, confessional and other influences from surroundings intersect, predefining it for development of cultural tourism. This paper represents an effort to create a professional study report, although limited to single destination - city of Budva that treats cultural tourism in correlation with evaluation of renewal and use of cultural-historic and built heritage. From the mentioned reasons and within described context, this paper tends to be a small, but precisely created contribution to the future actions of creating complex tourist offer at Montenegrin coast, especially in Budva as its 'capital', as it is often emphasized with reasonable expectations in public. .

Afin d'améliorer la qualité de l'air en milieu urbain, il convient en premier lieu de réduire les émissions polluantes. Cependant, différentes solutions techniques ont été proposées afin de dégrader certains polluants comme les oxydes d'azote (NOx ) ou les composés organiques volatils (COV). L'une d'entre elles repose sur l'emploi du bâti urbain recouvert de matériaux ou enduits photocatalytiques, lui conférant une certaine réactivité de manière à induire un puits chimique pour ces polluants. Différents tests, dont certains d'ampleur, ont été menés, aboutissant parfois à des résultats contradictoires. Les atouts mais aussi les limitations de cette solution technique sont brièvement discutées. To improve urban air quality, it is obviously necessary to reduce the underlying emissions of pollutants. However, a number of technical solutions have also been suggested in order to induce sinks for various harmful compounds such as nitrogen oxides (NOx ) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). One of those solutions aims at using built surfaces in the urban environment covered with a photocatalytic layer in order to induce a chemical loss for those pollutants. This has led to several test cases, leading to partly contradictory results. We briefly discuss here the benefits and limitations of this solution.

The paper discusses phenomenological fieldwork carried out by third- and fourth-year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture programme at the School of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University. It focuses on students’ sensory experiences while surveying a lively inner-urban street in Wellington, New Zealand, and discusses related (objective) circumstances, sensations and interpretations. Students were asked to describe their experiences while moving through the street and to record them in a field book in the form of notes and sketches. The goal of the paper is to capture, analyse and discuss students’ individual experiences of different atmospheric facets of an urban streetscape. Preliminary findings are presented and discussed.

At a time when cities try to stand out from one another, the construction of ambiances is brought back to the foreground of urban, social and cultural dynamics in metropolises. With this contribution, we aim at taking the example of Nantes and the Machines of the Isle of Nantes to show the transformations of an industrial territory into a cultural open stage with cultural practices. Indeed, following the shutdown of the shipyards in the 1990s, the city pursued a major cultural policy to make the industrial wastelands attractive. In successive steps, the temporary artistic practices changed urban ones, based on the question of ambiances and their narrative. Favouring the implementation of projects taking place in public spaces, the city became a 360°-urban scene. As opposed to a generic city, Nantes turned urban scenography into a way to single itself out, by accompanying the creation of plots and narratives around its territory. Between artistic experiments and narrative, Nantes thus appears as a stage-city that invites to include user experiences.

Les expérimentations menées dans la commune de Sidi Bou Saïd montrent la faisabilité de la démarche, l’intérêt de combiner mesures quantitatives et réalités sonores perçues, tout comme l’opérationnalisation possible de l’approche qualitative permettant de qualifier des ambiances sonores dans un riche environnement urbain.

Suburbanization and more precisely the development of residential subdivisions in Europe are at the core of many current debates. Over the years, they have been strongly criticized for the waste of land, increased infrastructure and network costs, car-dependency and the lack of urbanity. In this context, two processes are politically-driven in Europe: the densification of residential areas and the revitalization of the city centers. These political guidelines interrogate the transformation − and possible deterioration − of living environments and ambiances of residential subdivisions. Indeed, beyond the negative perspectives, other investigations have revealed the potentials of residential subdivisions from different points of view: ecology, social, architectural and urban. In order to contribute to these studies, this paper proposes to investigate the intermediate lived spaces in the specific context of residential subdivisions.

Son article aborde la réception par les différentes composantes de l’espace public à l’oeuvre (physique, sociale et sensible) et montre quels liens peuvent se créer entre le lieu de représentation, l’événement artistique et les pratiques et représentations sociales. Elle présente aussi des stratégies développées par les spectateurs lors de représentations, ainsi que les changements de perception et de représentation des espaces après ces spectacles. Pour cela, elle s’appuie sur ses enquêtes et analyses menées en France (particulièrement à Grenoble et à Calais), principalement sur la base d’observations participantes, de spectacles de différentes échelles (intimes comme s’adressant à une ville entière) et de tous types (fixes, déambulatoires, courts ou durant plusieurs jours).

This paper contributes to a deepening of the knowledge about how architectural experience can be described in neuro-phenomenological terms, through the development of a cognitive-phenomenological approach to examining architectural experience through text-based analysis. It aims to develop an assessment tool to produce knowledge about one?s personal experience and perception of the built environment by exploring the impact of its spatial properties on an individual, taking as a case study Le Corbusier?s experience of the Kasbah of Algiers. The results demonstrate that this city has the power to stir emotional engagement that arises from: a high cognitive-affective reaction towards the dynamic interactions between the curved contours of its streets; the harmony of its colours; the magnitude and vastness generated by its panoramic views towards the sea; its proportions in relation to the dimensions of the human body in different postures; the contrasts of the height, light, dimensions and ambiances; and the spatial navigation that favours the act of walking to discover the Kasbah and unveil its mysteries. These properties exist as complex networks of interconnected physical and atmospheric elements, and they involve integrated perception under the influence of previous knowledge, beliefs and aspirations to shape Le Corbusier?s architectural experience of the Kasbah.

Les histoires des villes de l’Ouest canadien sont inextricablement liées à l’histoire des Métis. Installées le long des rivières au XIXe siècle, les familles métisses constituaient le noyau sur lequel sont venus se greffer d’autres arrivants. Avec la transformation des villes au cours du XXe siècle, les familles métisses trouvent de moins en moins de place dans le paysage urbain et disparaissent des récits des grandes villes de l’Ouest canadien. Les Métis, comme les Premières Nations, sont victimes du colonialisme municipal, dont le but est d’effacer leur présence, perçue comme étant d’une époque révolue. Sans place en ville, certaines familles vivent dans des établissements spontanés aux abords des villes ou, comme dans le cas d’Edmonton, près des dépotoirs. Les Métis d’Edmonton ont grandement influencé l’évolution de la ville au XIXe siècle, jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient dépossédés de leurs terres à la fin de cette période. Quoique la plupart des familles quittent Edmonton, la relation qu’elles entretiennent avec la ville n’est pas coupée pour autant. Le but de notre article est avant tout de mettre en lumière un aspect peu connu de l’histoire d’Edmonton, celle de regroupements métis dans certaines parties de la ville –notamment sur le dépotoir Grierson, en plein centre-ville, et du côté de Stony Plain Road, c’est-à-dire au nord-ouest de la ville, où une communauté plus large s’est installée – dont on perçoit encore les traces et qui ont vu le jour dans les années 1930. Dans notre analyse, nous dressons un portrait préliminaire de cette présence métisse à Edmonton. Bien qu’aux yeux de la municipalité, ces personnes entraient dans la catégorie des « squatters » indésirables vivant dans des logements de fortune, notre étude examine la possibilité que ces logements aient représenté un « chez soi » permettant à des familles élargies de vivre ensemble et de se sentir culturellement en sécurité malgré l’hostilité et la discrimination ambiantes.

In 2010, there were 91 active oil sands projects in the Athabasca Oil Sands, Alberta where the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association monitors air quality and related environmental impacts. In 2012, ambient air concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ammonia did not exceed the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives. There was one exceedance of these objectives for ground-level ozone, and 62 exceedances for fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 microns. There were 170 exceedances of the 1-hour hydrogen sulphide / total reduced sulphur odour threshold. The number of hourly exceedances has decreased since 2009, yet odours remain a serious concern in some communities. Based on the Air Quality Health Index (ozone, nitrogen dioxide, fine particulate matter), the risk from ambient air quality to human health from some pollutants was calculated to be low 96% to 98% of the time depending upon monitoring location, moderate 1% to 3.4%, high ≤ 0.4%, and very high ≤ 0.2% of the year. In a highly regulated setting like the Alberta oil sands, it is critical for stakeholders to quantify the spatial influences of emission source types to explain any consequential environmental effects. Source apportionment studies successfully matched source chemical fingerprints with those measured in terrestrial lichens throughout the region. Forensic receptor modeling showed source types contributing to elemental concentrations in the lichens included combustion processes (~23%), tailing sand (~19%), haul roads and limestone (~15%), oil sand and processed materials (~15%), and a general anthropogenic urban source (~15%). Re-suspended fugitive dust from operations, tailings dikes, quarrying, on-road transportation, and land clearing was found to contribute enrichment to a much greater degree than the hitherto assumed combustion source type.SOMMAIREEn 2010, il y avait 91 projets d’extraction en cours dans les sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca en Alberta, soit dans le secteur où la Wood Buffalo Environmental Association mesure la qualité de l'air et les répercussions sur les milieux de vie. Les études d’attribution des sources ont très bien recoupé celles des empreintes chimiques des sources mesurées dans les lichens terrestres dans toute la région. La modélisation par récepteurs forensiques a montré que les types de sources qui contribuent aux concentrations élémentaires dans les lichens proviennent des procédés de combustion (~ 23%), des sables résiduels (~ 19%), des routes de transport et du calcaire (~ 15%), des sables bitumineux et des matériaux transformés (~ 15%) et d’une source urbaine anthropique générale (~ 15%). This article reports on conducted research on co-design for multi-generational co-living architecture and development proposals for urban living as solution to deal with ageingpopulations that are spatially disconnected like in the Metropolitan Region Perth/Western Australia. A gamified scenario simulation, the ‘Co-living2 game’, has been invented to explore uses of spatial activity, ambiance and features of individuals anticipating to live together in a specific urban setting. The aim was to enable potential inhabitants to explore and to adjust their needs and desires within a potential future built environment,using their contemplated daily activity patterns and qualitative considerations ofcommon areas, which transfer easily into the design process of a masterplan for Cohousing3 settlements. The results of the simulation survey includes the evaluation of programming priorities and concepts for the further urban and architectural development of Co-housing communities that enable age-appropriate, inclusive, multi-generational co-living buildings without limitations.Keywords: participatory architecture, collaborative research, sustainable urbandevelopment.

This article as a briefing explains the difference between ‘city uniqueness’ and ‘city singularity’ and emphasises how a city's notoriety promotes its unique characteristics in a deliberate direction toward the singularity. This viewpoint asserts that the significant urban forms are responsible for cities’ uniqueness. In contrast, city singularity is concerned with the tangible and intangible components of urban form and city life. Events or daily life experiences, an ambiance that authentically captures its history’, chronicles, ideologies, religions, beliefs, and human values are the intangible aspects of cities that confer prestige on the unique forms of cities and promote singularity. The concluding remarks reveal the commonalities between the two terms, distinguishing the imageability of tangible urban forms (e.g. star architecture and artefacts). Having a strong psychological sense of place provides a city with a good reputation, a good name, and a good image, thus distinguishing it from other cities, as evidenced by our contribution of proposing a method for determining the distinctions between these words.

The city of Berlin is often advertised as one of the most prominent creative cities today. In the past two decades, its marketing agencies have constructed a carefully crafted urban image designed to attract the young, mobile and creative workers that move the contemporary economy. To do that, they rely on cultural temporary uses that enable selected urban spaces to have the desired ‘cool’ and authentic ambiance that distinguishes this city from others within the competitive global network. This paper investigates the phenomenon of abundant street performers in the German capital to find out if and how these artists perceive their role and instrumentalisation within these creative policies. The field research carried out through the method of ethnography reveals that their understanding of their art as small resistances in urban space often clashes with their use in broader placemaking schemes that have negative consequences. The article begins with a discussion of creative policies in Berlin from an Urban Planning point of view, highlighting how it encourages the migration of young artists and creative professionals. It then analyses the definitions of busking in the existing literature in the Social Sciences to understand its potential as a builder of sociability. Moreover, it draws on theories that speak of the “looseness” of space and the idea of tactically appropriating a place through art to build an interdisciplinary approach between the different fields. Lastly, it presents the case study, using the performers’ own testimonials to draw conclusions about the temporary uses of urban space within a broader urban context.

Purpose This paper studied the effects of music plus fragrance or music alone on consumer purchase behaviour, footfalls and repeat visits to retail stores in the context of the mall. Design/methodology/approach A primary research was conducted through a structured questionnaire. A field study was conducted in two malls that attract the maximum crowd. The data from 250 respondents were analysed in total. Findings As per the present study, the combination of playing music with fragrance is more effective compared to playing music or fragrance alone on shopping behaviour, footfalls and repeat visits in retail stores in emerging markets like India. Research limitations/implications The study is more confined to a comparative study of the effectiveness of music with or without fragrance on consumer purchase behaviour and footfalls in retail stores located in malls. In view of research design, this could be a limitation of the study as types of music and other ambiance factors are not considered. The present study can be extended to religion as the religiosity of respondents may give a different response. The urban respondents may vary when compared to rural consumers. Therefore, the study can be extended by adding the rural or A-city mall or smaller malls in big cities. Research can be extended in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era to see if there is a change in consumer behaviour. It can also be extended to consumer's preference for different music and different fragrances. Practical implications This paper provides marketing managers and retail owners with valuable insights on the importance of using music with fragrance in retail stores to create unique consumer experiences in emerging markets that are different from developed countries. Managers should try to create both music, and fragrance in the store to improve purchase intention, and stay longer. To ensure that the planned music and fragrance approach creates the ambiance for consumers, marketing managers are advised to conduct market research. Special care should be taken for younger visitors to the store by creating the right ambiance. The present research will help many offline retailers' managers to strive for new competitive advantages through creating favourable shopping environments by understanding cultural differences. Originality/value The research gives direction to use music with a fragrance in the retail ambiance in the malls which will lead to improved consumer purchase, more footfalls, repeat visits and staying longer in emerging markets like India, which is a destination for global brands. Integration of three models of impulse buying (Rook and Fisher, 1995), individualism and collectivism (Triandis, 1995) and stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) model of Mehrabian and Russell (1974) is used to explain the complex behaviour of consumers towards more purchases and repeat visits. The study will shed light on the quandary that retailers in the organised sector face in emerging markets such as India regarding the use of music and fragrance, as well as the impact on purchase behaviour, footfalls and repeat visits.

Recent years have shown an increasing interest in local factors shaping the happiness or attachment of citizens in regard to their daily living environment, sometimes also coined city love or neighborhood love. This new strand of literature—often framed in the context of the “geography of happiness” or the “economics of happiness”—means an extension of quantitative socio-psychological or socio-economic research on determinants of people’s affection for their living environment, including local quality-of-life, sense of community, place-based social capital, attachment to “urban ambiance,” and so on. The present paper conceptualizes the nature and composition of urban characteristics of place attachment and appreciation ( city love) in terms of two constituent factors, viz. city soul (indicators on the perceived intangible attractiveness of the city and its neighborhoods) and city body (indicators reflecting the tangible attractiveness features of the city). This analytical approach will empirically be tested for four Swedish cities. Resident surveys were conducted among a total of 2,573 respondents; the multidimensional relationships between outcome variables and background factors were tested through a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM), which revealed significant effects of Aesthetics, Amenities, Accessibility, Safety and Health, and City Image on place attachment and appreciation (“city love”). A more detailed city level analysis revealed salient place-specific differences. In general, Aesthetics seemed to be the most universal driver for city love, while City Image was the most important factor to contribute to city soul.

PurposeThe Ottoman cultural legacy in Algeria is made up of a diverse range of architectural structures. The Algerian government strategy in connection with the Ottoman old buildings is to restore them into museums. This study will attempt to present a contrastive analysis between two old palaces being under restoration (refurbishment), and the goal is to propose a museum route by calculating the ambiance aimed at circulating the rooms by visitors.Design/methodology/approachThe authors analyzed the architectural components of the various entities by observing in situ and taking measurements for a single case study to get a sense of the results for the mid-season (spring and fall). The configuration was next evaluated by modeling the space syntax and combining it with a simulation of daylight luminance, for the period when the authors could not make measurements on-site. The ultimate goal is to combine these findings to suggest the ideal in-route for the future museum.FindingsThis research allowed the authors to propose a museum itinerary adapted to the new vocation of the palaces, which considers the daylight as an element of composition in the spaces of circulation.Practical implicationsThe paper proposes solutions to a flow management problem encountered in several similar palaces converted into museums.Social implicationsThe study aims to raise questions on the museum, and to preserve such heritage from neglect by giving it a new life more adapted to the needs of the Algerian society.Originality/valueThe authors believe that this contribution will be a creative solution for issues related to the operation of palaces that have been converted into museums.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the knowledge gap by analysing the motivations of driving both users and hosts to the co-working space in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as the motives of co-working space is related to how well that space supports their needs. Design/methodology/approach By using a mixed-methods approach, users’ and hosts’ behaviours were studied through the survey and in-depth interview, where 60 users were interviewed, as well as six operators of co-working space and two real estate market experts. Findings Based on the results, convenient location, open space layout and ambiance, shared facilities, membership costs, flexible leases and knowledge sharing are the main motives that drive users to the co-working space and these motives are significantly related to user satisfaction. The results also showed that the users’ motives for working in the co-working space differ mostly from hosts in terms of service attributes. Research limitations/implications The co-working space is more than just an office alternative but is a service-oriented real estate business. By providing the appropriate combination of attributes to succeed financially, co-workspace providers can support most of their members’ tasks, which leads to member satisfaction. Originality/value Research on the co-working place is still inadequate, particularly in Malaysia. Greater knowledge of attributes that influence users’ and hosts’ responses could lead to a better understanding and prediction in determining their needs and preferences.

Behavioral architecture approach required in the design of educational professions facilities for children. By applying the behavioral architecture approach, it’s expected to create a space and a certain ambiance in accordance with the child's behavior and their environment. So, the behavior of the children will affected the design of the building, so that the child's behavior and character will be used as a basic reference in the design of the building.
