Повний текст джерелаThis research questions the heuristic and operational issues of the video in the practice of urban planning. To do this, it operates a meeting between the notion of architectural and urban environments, as developed in Cresson, with image-mouvement and image-temps concepts developed by Deleuze. Then it proposes to give effect to this meeting in the practice of urban planning through digital compositing, technical handling of moving images. The hypothesis guiding this research is that it is possible to define a image-composite able to argue and to debate specific environments territories studied phenomena. This assumption is formalized around two corpus, the first comes from an artistic practice of video that motivated the development of this thesis, the second is from a practice of video in urban planning agency was carried out throughout this research. This work adds value to the video as knowledge media on one side and posture as a project of the other. Support for knowledge, because video offers the possibility of renewing the phenomenological approach in force in the atmospheres of the field by a sensitive understanding of phenomena in time of updating. Project posture, because the video is likely to reconfigure relational modalities implemented in dynamic analysis and design of the space and territory

Indeed, in a context where entertainment and idleness are playing a growing role in citizens’ life, certain places, due to their ambiance or their spatial and sensitive characteristics, invite them to pause. They become privileged spaces for the relaxation and uncovering of bodies in copresence. These unexpected beach situations appear in certain contemporary urban public spaces, often near water, and they allow citizens to relax and expose their bodies to the sun, the ground, the wind and others in places that have not been planned to this end. Such situations are little studied. This thesis work deals with the phenomenon of spontaneous urban beaches taking place in urban areas. This research aims to understand the way architecture apprehends the need to experience a change of scenery in the city by perceiving the spatial and ambient conditions surrounding the existence of these situations. We will also identify the temporal, sociocultural and sensitive conditions that define them

Повний текст джерелаIn a context of urban development at full speed in Guangdong (South of China), especially its capital Guangzhou, the rapid and radical transformation of landscapes raises a number of questions about the relationship between societies and their environment, the local peoples and the living places, art and the city. Faced with political and economic issues related to urban change, what is the role and work of art on the city layout? In what forms and in what ways the art it does integrity? With artistic interventions in public space, the artist is capable of restoring it in situ, mutual communication between people and places? What approaches and possible ways to address these issues?Since there are many western buildings built in Guangzhou last thirty years, face to face traditional Chinese sculptures that do not fit the Western style, how can we find the subchannels reconciling two polarities - the modern westernized form and the traditional Cantonese spirit - in the creation of urban sculpture? It therefore becomes necessary to rebuild a modern version of the old system by providing a local contemporary urban form using the traditional skills of artisans who exceed the dissonance between westernized architectural context and Cantonese regional sculpture

Повний текст джерелаThe proliferation of new towns as an alternative development near the metropolis in the 20th Century in the world, a priori suggests the reproduction of an urban archetype, the “garden city”, a posteriori a change towards a specific 21st Century prototype might be expected. These assumptions encourage a deepening of the existing form and of its reflected image: what type of townscape built and yet to be built. The present doctoral thesis enables us to take advantage of the binomial “new town/townscape”.From observation to qualification, the analysis is based on the precursors of townscape's traditional practices: picturesque survey, serial vision, skyline, urban inventory and morphological reading. The methodology operates mainly through still images (photographs) and moving images (video) collected through fieldwork in France, China, the Netherlands, Finland, the USA and England. The major components of the “metropolitan new towns” development are presented along four themes: multipolarity or town-center(s), mineral fabric or mobility weft, natural fabric and “vertical fabric” or “architectural membrane”. Considering the lack of renewal in the graphic interpretation of townscapes, a representation such as an “Identity Map”, which expresses a more sensitive experience, is proposed. This multidisciplinary, achronic and international research confirms the facial identity of the “metropolitan new town” of the 20th Century, downplaying the notion of an urban model. It recognizes in the townscape both non-transferable qualities and a leveraging potential for territorial development. It emphasizes the role of urban aesthetics in contributing to the pleasure of new town residents

Повний текст джерелаThe ground as a support for urban life remains a largely understudied topic in architectural and urban research. In a world where towns compete to offer a better quality of public spaces, pedestrian use is considered as an essential aspect. Felt underfoot and seen on the perceptual horizon without being consciously considered, very little in-depth research has revealed its sentient dimensions. After some brief historical considerations on the importance of urban ground, the study focuses on how the ground is integrated into the lived experience of our environment, beginning with how we learn to walk. The ground is a fundamental dimension and plays an essential role in keeping balance and creating a sense of proprioception. It participates as a basis for bodily experience by providing a surface of exchange. In terms of architecture and urban design, this study posits the ground as part of the ambiance as it constitutes the ambient background of the sensory experience of public spaces. In order to develop this hypothesis three case studies are considered: the first, based on a reactivated listening of twenty sounds recorded in Paris to provide an analysis of the role that the ground plays in experiencing the ambiance; the second, a comparative set of observations and video recordings taken in two sites in Barcelona and La Défense in Paris; the third, is based on ten blind-folded commented walks carried out at La Défense. It tries to examine what the somatic experience of the ground entails, how does the relationship between the ground and the “soma” take place? In conclusion, the reciprocal contributions of Ambiances and Somatics are considered in relation to this material as we ask what new theoretical approaches these disciplines can provide in exploring body experience

Повний текст джерелаStarting from a consideration of the landscape, as it is configured daily by individual and collective practices which are supported by the landscape and from which the landscape is being shaped, this PhD thesis in architecture focuses on the ordinary transformation of places and questions the ways through which we can understand it in order to think out the becoming of these places. How can we take into account the dynamic of the ambiance in order to think about the design of a place? In that perspective, this research questions the scope of film (as a medium, as a practice and in its reception): what does filming allow us to understand of the ordinary transformation of places? This work investigates the potential of audiovisual images in terms of perception, representation and shared designing of urban public spaces. How can film facilitate the understanding of the states and transitions of the relationship between space and bodies – considering that bodies perceive and act at the same time? In order to study that question, a specific methodological protocol, open to heterogeneous uses of film for the understanding and the designing of cities, was worked out. It led us to the analysis of four frameworks: 1. Collecting and selecting existing films; 2. Observing a video project within the context of an urban study; 3. Filmmaking; 4. Experimenting film practice with architecture students. These four frameworks address the question of filmmaking in different ways: status and stakes of the use of film, involvement in fieldwork through film practice (involvement in space, in time and in relation with others), film postures and relations to the world. Secondly, our research raises the question of film reception. It is, then, from a collective experience of reception that film becomes the base of a dialogue between people who are invited to share and debate about their own experiences. The plurality of registers coming from the film reception and its discussion (what is sensible, perceptive, interpretive, critical and creative) becomes the base to work out a common design. From these considerations of the scope of film, it appears in the background that the sensible register and collective improvisations are of paramount importance in the understanding and designing of urban public spaces

Повний текст джерелаProposing a rereading of the sensory experience by the term palimpsest is above all focusing on « time ».This approach introduces time as a main material for designing cities. Being defined as a stratification of time by a continual re-writing, the metaphorical coupling of terms « ambiance-palimpsest » adds a temporal depth to the sensory phenomena. It point out how everyday life experience reflects a maintain over time. This vision redefines the ambience as an incarnation of the past in the present through a continuous process of sedimentation of traces. Ambience-palimpsest embodies a power of time in which the past is reconstructed differently with each time a new present is overlaid upon territory. Between the production of memorial cities and artifacts ones, the current contemporary urban thinking marks a crisis in dealing with time, in which the present functions as a buffer, isolating the past from the futur. The introduction of term palimpsest in the field of ambiences relocates the present as a connecting interface between the two temporal entities. Taking into consideration the temporal depth when analyzing the sensory experience, offers a new perspective of designing cities by recomposing the past sensory values in a projection to the future. It mixes a retrospective and prospective approaches for rethinking the future of cities. In such an interest, this thesis proposes an architectural reading tool « the temporal section » as a way to stroll in time and to unfold the layers of sediment memories. This architectural section, to which we add time as vertical dimension of place, helps reading the temporal configuration of the experience, thus marking a turning point in the representation of cities form cartography to stratigraphy

Повний текст джерелаThe urban environment is defined by the interaction between the morphological and physical characteristics of the city as interpreted by the human senses. To fully comprehend the urban space, we chose a dynamic immersive approach in our research that bases itself on the user’s real-life experience. Our research methodology applies virtual reality (VR) techniques to evaluate urban daylighting ambiences through the use of solar effects. Our study suggests immersive experimental methods to analyze visual perception. The study is carried on two stages:The First stage is a theoretical approach which looks into two axes:The methods used in urban space analysis by showing the complex interactions between the “visual perception - daylight- urban space” elements. The use of VR as a design tool in the fields of architecture and urban design. Two axes allow to identify and correlate the main elements of our methodology. The second stage will use sensorial inquiries to conduct three experimental studies on an existing urban path. These studies compared between users’ observation of the daylight phenomena in situ and its representations in vitro. These experiments were evaluated on three levels according to the degree of immersion and interaction. The goal is to determine the necessary conditions for the solar effects restitution, as well as validating the contributions of VR in daylighting ambiences analysis. The results obtained show that visual perception is influenced by the urban qualities and the experiment context. The results also showed the potentials for VR in rendering urban daylighting ambiences despite of the technical and financial limitations

Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this thesis was to quantify children's exposure to environmental ambient noise at home and at school and to assess the relation between noise exposure and school performance of 8-9 year-old-schoolchildren. This study was conducted among the 900 children living in a 120, 000 inhabitants city and attending one of the 35 public primary schools in key stage 2, year 4 in 2006-2007. Questionnaires were distributed to the families to locate the children's home and collect data on potential confounding factors associated with school achievement or failure. These questionnaires were completed by 724 families living in the city.A noise measurement campaign was performed at the residence of 44 randomly sampled schoolchildren (outdoor and indoor noise levels during one week) and a strategic noise map was built at the city scale to calculate the outdoor environmental ambient noise levels at home and at school. These noise levels were compared with the children's school performance at the national standardised assessment test in French and mathematics. A linear exposure-effect relation between noise exposure at school and impaired Mathematics score was found after adjustment for confounding factors. Furthermore, both the ambient noise exposure at school and at home individually considered were found to be associated with an impaired children French performance. This study mainly focused on the assessment of the noise exposure in an urban area. The magnitude of the effect we observed on school performance may seem to be modest, but, when considering the number of people potentially chronically exposed to similar environmental noise levels, this effect may be of importance
