Les agricultures observables dans les agglomérations (agricultures professionnelles en circuits courts ou longs, jardins privés et partagés, agriculture de loisirs) sont aujourd’hui valorisées dans leurs dimensions alimentaires, environnementales et socio-politiques. Elles participent aux manières d’habiter la ville et à l’aménagement des territoires urbains. La diversité de leurs formes et de leurs représentations pour les acteurs complexifie toutefois la définition d’une « agriculture urbaine ». Sur la base d’observations de terrain en Bretagne (France) nous retenons qu’outre sa localisation proche de la ville, ce sont ses fonctionnalités et son intégration dans le projet d’agglomération qui permettent de définir son caractère urbain.

El objetivo central del presente artículo es abordar la función de la agricultura urbana como práctica de apropiación del espacio urbano y la construcción comunitaria encaminada a generar sistemas alimentarios locales. El texto analiza un triple caso de estudio en el que se aplicaron técnicas cualitativas en áreas periféricas populares al oriente de la zona metropolitana de la Ciudad de México, con lo cual se evidencian las innovaciones y estrategias alimentarias a microescala, que son poco valorizadas fuera del ámbito local, debido al bajo capital tecnológico y digital para la difusión de sus alcances. Los resultados presentan rasgos particulares sobre la revalorización de los espacios ecológicos y ociosos en áreas urbanas, así como sobre la construcción de formas diferenciadas de habitar los contextos urbanos y sobre el modo en el que se teje el sentido de pertenencia de una comunidad que recupera los recursos territoriales a través de reconocer momentos críticos que influyen en la reinvención de prácticas y en la generación de estrategias de apoyo mutuo.Abstract: The main objective of the present paper is to address the function of urban agriculture as a practice of appropriation of urban space and community construction aimed at generating local food. The text analyzes a triple case study in which qualitative techniques were applied in popular peripheral areas to the east of the metropolitan area of Mexico City, which shows the innovations and food practices on a micro scale that are little valued outside of the local sphere due to the low technological and digital capital for the spreading of their scope. The results present particular features on the revaluation of idle spaces and ecological reserves within urban areas, as well as the construction of differentiated ways of inhabiting urban contexts and the way in which the sense of belonging of a community that recovers territorial resources is woven through the recognition of critical moments that influence the reinvention of practices and the generation of mutual support strategies.Keywords: agriculture; local; urban; popular neighborhoods; territory.Résumé : Cet article o pour objectif l’analyse des pratiques de l’agriculture urbaine, entendues comme une forme d’appropriation de l’espace urbain et de la construction communautaire visant à établir des réseaux d’alimentation. Le texte offre une triple étude de cas à partir de quartiers populaires de l’orient de la zone métropolitaine de Mexico. Sur la base de techniques quantitatives, l’article met en évidence les innovations sociales et les pratiques pour la souveineté alimentaire à échelle micro, lesquelles tendent à être peu valorisées en raison du bas capital technologique et digital nécessaire pour la diffusion de leur couverture. Les résultats présentent de quelle façon les savoirs d’origine rurale se revalorisent et comment se construisent les formes diférenciées d’habiter les contextes urbains. L’article pose le problème de la contribution de l’agriculture à l’aménagement des espaces périurbains par les villes. Il repose sur la mise en relation de travaux de recherche menés dans le cadre d’une thèse en 1999 dans l’arrondissement de Lille et d’un programme de recherche sur le développement urbain durable mené en 2007 dans l’agglomération tourangelle. La comparaison montre l’importance de la disponibilité foncière et de la convergence des représentations des élus locaux et des agriculteurs quant aux fonctions de l’agriculture. L’article explique les réticences des agriculteurs à s’engager dans des politiques territoriales discriminantes et finit sur la rareté foncière comme levier pour l’ancrage d’une agriculture multifonctionnelle.

ResumoEste texto tem como objetivo, sobretudo, dar visibilidade a um problema significativo para vários citadinos: o lugar da agricultura urbana e das pessoas diretamente envolvidas nesta atividade, no processo de planejamento urbano, a partir de exemplos ocorridos na cidade do Recife/Pernambuco/Brasil. Os principais resultados apontam que a agricultura urbana e os agricultores urbanos não são efetivamente considerados pelos técnicos das ações voltadas ao planejamento urbano de Recife. Isto, talvez, porque, a agricultura urbana se constitui de uma prática social utilizada por pessoas que pertencem a grupos sociais “hiperprecarizados” da economia urbana local. A ideia de planejamento territorial efetivo deve ser capaz de orientar políticas públicas que, a partir, também, da melhora das condições das atividades agrícolas na cidade, possam garantir a superação da perversidade das relações socioespaciais existentes em muitos lugares da cidade.Palavras-chave: Agricultura Urbana; Gestão Territorial; Planejamento da Cidade. AbstractThe aim of this text is expose an important problem with regard to urban men: the place of urban agriculture and the people direct involved in this activity. It demonstrated some steps in urban planning and the case study of Recife/Pernambuco/Brazil (city/state/country). The main results show that the urban agriculture and urban farmers are in absence of the thoughts of Recife’s planers. Maybe that happens because the urban agriculture is a social practice utilized by people from the “lowest layers” of society and in a marginal area in local urban economy. The idea of an effective territorial management is to guide public policies that promote better farming activities in city and assuring the diminution of poverty and the increase of human development in many places of the city.Keywords: Urban Agriculture; Territorial Management; Planning City. ResumenEste texto pretende, sobre todo, dar visibilidad a un problema importante para muchos habitantes de la ciudad: el lugar de la agricultura urbana y las personas directamente involucradas en esta actividad, en el proceso de planificación urbana, a partir de ejemplos que han ocurrido en las ciudades de Recife/Pernambuco/Brasil. Los principales resultados exponen que la agricultura urbana y los agricultores urbanos no son, en realidad, considerados por los técnicos de acciones centradas en la planificación urbana de Recife. Esto, tal vez, porque la agricultura urbana se constituye de una práctica social utilizada por personas que pertenecen a grupos sociales “hiperprecarizados” de la economía urbana local. L’agriculture urbaine est une activité reconnue pour sa multifonctionnalité. En Afrique, elle peut contribuer à la sécurité alimentaire et à la réduction de la pauvreté. Souvent associée au maraîchage, et de plus en plus, à l’élevage urbain, la production de plantes aromatiques et médicinales est une forme d’agriculture urbaine peu étudiée. Elle est présente à Ziguinchor, au Sénégal, où a été menée l’étude. L’objectif de cet article est de caractériser cette agriculture et d’apprécier ses fonctions environnementales et socioéconomiques. La méthode combine une cartographie des sites agricoles et une enquête auprès de 70 producteurs. Les résultats montrent qu’il s’agit de micro-exploitations qui se développent dans les interstices urbains. La tenure foncière est dominée par l’emprunt gratuit à des propriétaires qui peuvent reprendre leurs terres à tout moment. Les espèces cultivées sontMentha spicataL., Mentha X piperitaL. etOcimum basilicumL. La culture de ces plantes est l’œuvre des femmes qui en tirent des revenus significatifs. Ces revenus sont destinés à l’achat de denrées alimentaires et à la scolarisation des enfants. En plus de réduire les situations de pauvreté, ces micro-exploitations contribuent à l’assainissement de la ville, car la fertilisation provient des ordures ménagères organiques et de la fumure animale. Les menthes recèlent d’autres vertus, notamment médicinales, peu connues des producteurs. Malgré ces atouts, cette activité est limitée dans son développement alors que des solutions d’amélioration technique et de valorisation commerciale seraient possibles.

Résumé Sur l’Arc méditerranéen, le tourisme de masse, depuis les années 1960, a façonné des villes duelles (agriculture/tourisme, pêche/tourisme, quartier permanent/quartier saisonnier). Deux grands types de stations opposent des appendices récréatifs, greffés sur des noyaux villageois, à des « stations planifiées », créées ex nihilo. Dans le premier type, dominant sur le littoral méditerranéen espagnol, la centralité urbaine s’est déplacée de la cité prétouristique à la ville touristique en quarante ans de développement de l’activité distractive. L’éclosion de sociétés mobiles et multirésidentes, en Europe, depuis les années 1990, contribue à accélérer cette tendance, qui est à l’origine du fonctionnement d’importantes discontinuités spatiales, sociétales et culturelles entre les différentes composantes urbaines.

En ciudades con un importante patrimonio histórico son cada vez más frecuentes los procesos de homogeneización del paisaje urbano. Una dinámica que conduce a la transformación de determinados entornos históricos en espacios en donde apenas queda lugar para la singularidad, las actividades no reguladas o la participación ciudadana. Este estudio propone analizar una serie de iniciativas desarrolladas en la última década en centros de cuatro ciudades españolas, concretamente en Sevilla, Barcelona, Madrid y Zaragoza. Proyectos que se apoyan en la agricultura y la jardinería urbanas para sortear la banalización imperante, creando espacios para la cultura, las relaciones sociales y la imaginación. Pese a las dificultades en su gestión y su repercusión minoritaria, estas intervenciones ejemplifican un modo de reconfigurar el paisaje urbano, planteando esquemas de activación, percepción activa y participación en lugares centrales de la ciudad en proceso de abandono, donde las actividades agrícolas y jardineras adquieren un peso importante.PALABRAS CLAVE: paisaje urbano, acupuntura urbana, agricultura urbana, participación ciudadana, derecho a la ciudad.Processes of homogenization of the urban landscape are becoming more frequent in cities with an important historical heritage. A dynamic that leads to the transformation of certain historical environments in spaces where there is hardly any room for uniqueness, unregulated activities or public participation. This study aims to analyse a number of initiatives developed in the last decade in four Spanish city centres, particularly in Seville, Barcelona, Madrid and Zaragoza. Projects that are using urban agriculture and gardening to escape form current banality, creating spaces for culture, social relations and imagination. Despite the difficulties in its management and its minor impact, these interventions exemplify a way to reshape urban landscape, through schemes of activation, active perception and participation in abandoned places in the city, where agricultural activities and gardening are now playing an important role.KEYWORDS: urban landscape, urban acupuncture, urban agriculture, citizen participation, right to the city.

A prática da Agricultura Urbana tem se otimizado e ganhado visibilidade nos últimos anos, tanto no campo das políticas públicas, quanto nos debates acadêmicos, principalmente quando se trata do acesso a uma alimentação saudável. Entretanto, esta atividade não se restringe apenas ao cultivo e produção de alimentos, pois possui uma gama de modalidades com funcionalidades distintas. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo expor a importância da agricultura produzida no tecido urbano, além de fomentar o debate acadêmico sobre a atividade laboral, entender de que forma este fenômeno está instituído no município de Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, sobretudo a partir das hortas vinculadas ao programa Eco Hortas Comunitárias, criado em 1990 por lei municipal. A metodologia adotada para a consecução do trabalho é qualitativa descritiva, com o levantamento bibliográfico, sistematização de dados secundários (IBGE e Prefeitura Municipal de Campos dos Goytacazes), levantamento de dados primários (agricultores urbanos, supervisores, técnicos) e análise dos dados e informações levantadas. Dessa forma, buscamos entender todo o processo de estruturação e a dinâmica socioeconômica desta atividade no município. Sendo um elemento de ocupação do solo que produz alimentos de qualidade, expansão de áreas verdes e criação de novos postos de emprego. Palavras-chave: Agricultura Urbana. Eco Hortas Comunitárias. THE IMPORTANCE OF URBAN AGRICULTURE: a study on the Eco Hortas Comunitárias programme in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes – RJ ABSTRACT The practice of urban agriculture has been optimized and gained visibility in recent years, both in the field of public policies and in academic debates, especially when it comes to access to healthy eating. However, this activity is not only restricted to the cultivation and production of food, because it has a range of modalities with different features. This research aims to expose the importance of agriculture produced in the urban space, and to promote the academic debate on the work activity, to understand how this phenomenon is established in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, especially the From the gardens linked to the program Eco Hortas Comunitárias, created in 1990 by municipal law. The methodology adopted for the achievement of the work is qualitative descriptive, with the bibliographical survey, systematization of secondary data (IBGE and municipal Municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes), survey of primary data (urban farmers, supervisors, technicians) and analysis of the data and information raised. In this way, we seek to understand the whole process of structuring and the socio-economic dynamics of this activity in the municipality. Sin embargo, esta actividad no sólo se limita al cultivo y producción de alimentos, ya que tiene una gama de modalidades con diferentes características. Esta investigación pretende exponer la importancia de la agricultura producida en el tejido urbano, y promover el debate académico sobre la actividad laboral, para entender cómo se establece este fenómeno en el municipio de Campos dos Goytacazes RJ, especialmente desde los jardines vinculados a la comunidad del programa Eco Hortas Comunitárias, creada en 1990 por la ley municipal. La metodología adoptada para el logro de la obra es cualitativamente descriptiva, con el estudio bibliográfico, la sistematización de datos secundarios (IBGE y Municipalidad de Campos dos Goytacazes), estudio de datos primarios (agricultores urbanos, supervisores, técnicos) y análisis de los datos e información planteados. De esta manera, buscamos comprender todo el proceso de estructuración y la dinámica socioeconómica de esta actividad en el municipio. Agricultural runoff into surface water is a problem in Australia, as it is in arguably all agriculturally active countries. While farm practices and resource management measures are employed to reduce downstream effects, they are often either technically insufficient or practically unsustainable. Therefore, consumers may still be exposed to agrichemicals whenever they turn on the tap. For rural residents surrounded by agriculture, the link between agriculture and water quality is easy to make and thus informed decisions about water consumption are possible. Urban residents, however, are removed from agricultural activity and indeed drinking water sources. Urban and rural residents were interviewed to identify perceptions of agriculture's impact on drinking water. Rural residents thought agriculture could impact their water quality and, in many cases, actively avoided it, often preferring tank to surface water sources. Urban residents generally did not perceive agriculture to pose health risks to their drinking water. Although there are more agricultural contaminants recognised in the latest Australian Drinking Water Guidelines than previously, we argue this is insufficient to enhance consumer protection. Health authorities may better serve the public by improving their proactivity and providing communities and water utilities with the capacity to effectively monitor and address agricultural runoff.

This study aims to determine the dynamics of agricultural labor force of North Sulawesi Province. Re-search location in Manado (July to August 2010). Collecting data is secondary data research. The data were processed using the calculation of share of labor and labor force growth rate calculations. The re-sults showed employment growth rate of agriculture sector decreased by 5.78 percent per annum in the period of 2000-2009. While employment in non-agricultural sector increased by 1.78 percent each year. This indicates there is the tendency of structural transformation of agriculture labor to non-agricultural sector. Low tendency of Trade will be able to influence farmers to reduce or stop activities that agribusi-ness will affect the size of the agricultural labor share. Labor share of agriculture sector on the basis of education level is dominated by the level of primary education during the period 2007-2009 but its labor force growth rate has decreased each year in both rural and urban areas. Labor share of the agricultur-al sector based on the age group was dominated by the age of 55 years and above over the 2007-2009 period and is indicated by increasing the growth rate of labor force in rural and urban areas especially in urban areas despite a decline each year that tend to occur due to an increased energy agricultural labor in rural areas. Labor share of agriculture sector by district / city dominated by Bolaang Mongon-dow during the period 2007-2009, although rates of employment growth in agriculture sector has de-creased each year in both rural and urban areas. Labor share of agriculture sector based on the out-pouring of work hours was dominated by workers who work full (>35 hours) during the period 2007-2009 despite the decline in employment growth rates in both rural and urban areas each year.Keywords: Dynamics of Agricultural Labor Force, Structural Transformation, Labor Share

Abstract The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has the responsibility of quantifying the nation’s agricultural production. Historically, it has focused on large production agriculture. With interest and activity increasing in urban areas, NASS has begun exploring how to better quantify urban agriculture. This segment of agriculture is particularly challenging to enumerate because the agricultural holdings tend to be small, diverse, widely dispersed, and more transient than the predominantly large farms in rural areas. In collaboration with the Multi-Agency Collaboration Environment (MACE), a new approach to list building was explored in a pilot study conducted in the City of Baltimore, Maryland. Using a big data approach, areas of potential agricultural activity were identified by gathering information (state and local permits, Facebook and twitter feeds, interest groups, etc.) via the web. A sample was drawn from the list, and an in-person survey was conducted to assess whether or not the identified areas had agricultural activity. The results of the pilot study are presented. Lessons learned from the study and next steps are discussed.

Actors’ perception of urban agriculture can affect the way urban agricultural decisions are made and implemented either positively or negatively, with or without the actors being aware of it. The way actors perceive urban agriculture is influenced by actors’ interests, limited or unlimited information about urban agriculture, policy and legal frameworks. This study used a case-study design to examine the effects of actors’ diverse perception of urban agriculture on the governance of urban agriculture. Purposefully selected 60 respondents participated in-depth interviews in the wards of Daraja Mbili and Lemala. Farmers and agricultural officers perceived urban agriculture positively because their livelihoods and professional interests were related and relied on the practice of urban agriculture. Urban planners and agricultural officers perceived agriculture positively and negatively depending on the way agricultural activities affected the environment or were compatible with non-agricultural activities. The implementation of policy and enforcement of bylaws relating to urban agriculture was not successful because urban planners and environmental officers were skeptical about the value of urban agriculture. Doing urban agriculture in the environmentally sensitive areas was against environmental bylaws, but the area was encroached upon by the farmers who had no alternative land for farming. Land use hurdles for doing urban agriculture were rarely addressed by urban planners who had no evidence of the benefits of urban agriculture to city authority compared with revenue and employment opportunities from real estate developments. We conclude that the farmers’ and non-farmers positive and negative perception of urban agriculture stem from their interests, limited or unlimited information about urban agriculture. Government officials’ perception of urban agriculture is influenced by their carrier and work obligations. Despite the presence of policy acknowledging urban agriculture and environmental bylaws for regulating urban agriculture, actors cannot really govern urban agriculture if they perceive it negatively.

Hydroponi is a solution for agricultureal development on narrow land. Precesion farming was needed to maintain plant growth. Hydroponic system required regulation of air and water temperature, humidity, water level, pH, water nutrient. This study used SDLC methodology. The result of this research is an automatic hydroponic implementation that can monitor and control an Internet of Things based hydroponic system using Arduino.

This study aimed to examine the influence of agricultural development under urbanization on agriculture water supply internalization. Water supply internalization is the process of measuring water security to estimate the degree of water supply sustainably by region inside. According to water users, Water supply internalization could be divided into Agriculture and urban water supply internalization. Agriculture and urban water supply internalization are calculated in this study. This study employed a spatial model to analyze agricultural water supply internalization and its influencing factors. The results showed that the agriculture development associated with agricultural population and crop typology impacts agricultural water supply internalization. Urban water supply internalization increases lead to an increase in agricultural water supply internalization. The agricultural population’s spatial agglomerations lead to increased agricultural water supply internalization. Agricultural population’s spatial agglomerations mean neighborhood city agriculture population share similar trend. Agricultural and urban water supply internalization have spatial autoconnection. The study area consisted of 30 cities in four provinces in North China: Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shandong.

Cet article traite d’un phénomène urbain encore méconnu en Afrique, mais qui est fréquent ailleurs, à savoir la décroissance des villes. En effet, ce phénomène s’est fortement développé depuis les années 1990 dans plusieurs régions du monde. Les villes en décroissance sont celles qui perdent leurs populations qui migrent en direction d’autres villes plus attractives, à cause du déclin de l’emploi local, des problèmes sociaux et de la faiblesse de l’économie locale. Ce phénomène peut toucher des villes de toutes tailles et causé une crise structurelle multidimensionnelle. Notre enquête sur Mossendjo a conclu que cette ville, de taille moyenne dans l’armature urbaine congolaise, est depuis plusieurs années en phase de décroissance l’entraînant inexorablement vers sa ruralité et la pauvreté de sa population. Elle a démontré que cette décroissance est due essentiellement à la désindustrialisation et la désurbanisation de la ville : la part de la population vivant de l’agriculture de subsistance atteint aujourd’hui 90%, la structure de l’emploi montre que 79% de la population de Mossendjo est sans emploi, la ville compte 56,52% de femmes et sa population est relativement jeune, 92,65% de la population a moins de 45 ans et 75% des habitants de la ville de Mossendjo est au chômage. This article deals with an urban phenomenon still little known in Africa, but which is frequent elsewhere, namely the decline of cities. Indeed, this phenomenon has developed strongly since the 1990s in several regions of the world. Shrinking cities are those who lose their populations who migrate to other more attractive cities, because of the decline of local employment, social problems and the weakness of the local economy. This phenomenon can affect cities of all sizes and cause a multidimensional structural crisis. Our survey of Mossendjo concluded that this city, of medium size in the Congolese urban framework, has been in a phase of decline inexorably towards its rurality and the poverty of its population. It demonstrated that this decline is essentially due to deindustrialization and de-urbanization of the city: the share of the population living from subsistence agriculture today reaches 90%, the employment structure shows that 70% of the population of Mossendjo is unemployed, the city has 56.52% of women and its population is relatively young, 92.65% of the population is under 45 years old and 75% of the inhabitants of the town of Mossendjo are unemployed.

Based on this study, urban agriculture can increase urban community prosperity, environmental sustainability and quality of health. Urban agriculture productivity needs agricultural technology innovation to ensure sustainability of production. Foram selecionados de acordo com os critérios de busca, inclusão e exclusão 14 artigos publicados com aderência ao tema e interesse da pesquisa. Para cada um dos artigos buscaram-se identificar sete tipos de dado ao longo da análise, sendo eles: (1) título; (2) ano de publicação; (3) autores; (4) periódico; (5) local do estudo; (6) tipologias de AUP; e (7) funções da AUP. Foi finalmente elaborada uma classificação das funções da AUP em três grandes dimensões: sociocultural, econômica e ambiental. Ficou evidenciado que a AUP em suas diversas formas e tipos apresenta benefícios e, poderia ser utilizada e estimulada por meio de políticas públicas como estratégia para o desenvolvimento de sistemas alimentares mais sustentáveis e para que os ambientes urbanos e periurbanos sejam locais mais saudáveis. Finalmente foi possível concluir que a AUP pode ser uma importante ferramenta na busca de atingir os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), tal como preconizado pela Organização das Nações Unidas em 2015.

The dual identity of carbon sources and carbon sinks makes agriculture the focus of carbon neutralization-related research. Compared with traditional rural agriculture and urban industrial production, urban agriculture has its own particularities. It is of positive practical significance to explore the interaction and its evolution process between urban agricultural multifunctionality and carbon effects in seeking solutions to alleviate carbon pressure. Based on the changes in agricultural carbon emissions and carbon sequestration in Guangzhou from 2002 to 2020, we used the Granger causality analysis method to investigate the interaction between urban agricultural multifunctionality and carbon effects and then used the grey association model to analyse the evolution process of associative degrees between the two and divide the agricultural development stages. Finally, according to the practicalities of Guangzhou, we analyzed carbon effects generated in the multifunctional transformation of urban agriculture and put forward corresponding policy suggestions on how to solve the problem of excessive carbon dioxide emissions through agriculture in metropolitan areas. The results show that from 2002 to 2020 in Guangzhou, urban agricultural production decreased, the economic and social function increased, and the ecological function climbed and then declined. The carbon sequestration of urban agriculture in Guangzhou was approximately four times more than the carbon emissions. Carbon emissions experienced a process of first decreasing, then increasing, then remaining constant, and finally decreasing, while carbon sequestration first decreased and then increased. Second, the carbon emissions of urban agriculture in Guangzhou have a causal relationship with the production, social, and ecological functions. Carbon emissions are the Granger cause of the economic function but not the opposite. The carbon sequestration of urban agriculture in Guangzhou has a causal relationship with production and economic functions. Carbon sequestration is the Granger cause of the ecological function but not the opposite. There is no Granger causal relationship between carbon sequestration and the social function. Third, from 2002 to 2020, the interactive development process of urban agricultural multifunctionality and carbon effects in Guangzhou can be divided into three stages: production function oriented (2002–2006), economic and social function enhanced and production function weakened (2007–2015) and the economic and social function exceeded the production function (2016–2020). Fourth, the multifunctional transformation of urban agriculture has brought about carbon effects of reducing emissions and increasing sequestration. There is a long time lag between multifunctional transformation and carbon effects of urban agriculture.

Green facilities of urban agriculture offer a fertile ground for green innovation, such as rooftop gardens, green curtains, and indoor plant growing, which create a new forms of urban farming economy. The previous studies for cost-benefit analysis of urban agriculture indicated that green facilities could contribute both quantitative and qualitative benefits. The value of green facility strategies of urban agriculture may often be underestimated without transforming qualitative benefits to quantitative benefits. This study examined the effects of green facilities of urban agriculture development in Taiwan. The market reaction was explored by adopting economic value added (EVA) technique for the measurement of both quantitative and qualitative value contributed by green facilities. The results from this study support that there exists interaction between qualitative factors such as indirect economic benefits and social psychological benefits and quantitative factors, agricultural production and energy saving impacted by green facilities. The study concluded that consumers of urban agricultural crops are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products. The establishment of relationship between urban agricultural production and consumption can contribute to sustainability while generating economic opportunities.

Food and nutrition security has been neglected in the planning field for reasons of a lack of connection between food and planning and the perception that agricultural activities have no place in the modernizing world. However, considering increasing climate change impacts and implications on industrialized agriculture, there is a clear need to establish shorter, more sustainable agricultural production practices and food supply chains. Urban agriculture is proposed as a potential method of intervention for planners to support sustainable food production and supply chains. The paper utilized a multiple-case study design to analyze four best practice examples of urban agriculture in the Global South to uncover its potential to address food security associated risks and contribute to sustainable development objectives. The results delivered evidence of the potential to harness the multifunctionality of urban agriculture to not only improve the food security of the most at-risk populations, but to also address other urban risks such as unemployment, community decline and food deserts. The recommendations for this paper relate to establishing a food security department, mapping and encouraging more sustainable food supply chains, creating land uses and zonings specific to urban agriculture and to utilize its multifunctionality to address other urban risks.

AbstractAlthough discussion of the role of urban agriculture in developing nations has occurred over the past decade, dialogue relating to urban agriculture in industrialized countries, including the United States (US) has only recently begun to attract significant attention. The unique factors that influence urban agriculture, including limited and non-traditional land access, use of reclaimed soils and alternative growing mediums, local legal and political environments, social and community-based missions, and involvement of non-traditional farmers, create a production system distinct from rural agricultural enterprises. In many cases, specific local environmental and external factors drive urban farms to develop unique innovations for space-intensive production systems, often creating a dominant paradigm for urban farming for a given location. Furthermore, non-production-related organizational goals are often the primary focus of urban agricultural operations, with the food production becoming a secondary objective. In order to address this information gap regarding the status of urban agriculture in the US, our project, centered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, gathered data through site visits to and interviews of organizations in seven cities, examining how structural and strategic food system factors shape urban agricultural efforts. A broad range of operations are considered, including diverse business and production models based on both commercial and community-based management strategies and production in parking and vacant lots, warehouses, public land and peri-urban locations. Based on these observations, the unique innovations in space-intensive agricultural production that have arisen in response to urban food system factors are discussed. We conclude with an assessment of the most significant challenges continuing to face urban agriculture.

The objective of this research is to explore the possibilities of an alliance between Madrid’s municipal markets and its periurban agrarian territory to favor proximity production and consumption, sizing both the farming territory’s capacity and the food demand that might be covered by the markets to evaluate scenarios for a possible territorialization of this alliance.

Rapid urbanization in developing countries involves unplanned migration, unemployment and poverty. The steady shrinking of rural areas and the use of agricultural land for other purposes are progressively increasing the pressure on natural resources. This development on the one hand increases the risk to food security, and on the other triggers climate change. The rural population who migrate to the cities or who are absorbed into urban areas continue their agricultural activities in the urban in order to provide themselves with an income or to maintain their food security. In the big cities of the developed world, contact with nature is kept by means of hobby gardens, recreational areas and urban and suburban plant and animal farming, and creative ideas such as roof gardens can be found. This development, known as urban agriculture, is practiced by 800 million people in the world. Urban agriculture has many economic, social and environmental benefits, but it may also have risks and adverse effects. In this study, the developments in this area in Turkey and the world are presented, and all aspects of its effects and outcomes are discussed.

Micro-agriculture is a landscape: the collection of garden plots, and natural and artificial materials used define a unified yet diversified whole, different from the traditional agricultural landscape in its reduced scale, biological richness, the variety of materials used and the heterogeneous landscape created. Land use practices generated spontaneously can lead to projects for landscaping and reorganizing marginal areas, and the definition of a new linear landscape.

An attempt was made to assess the women contribution towards agriculture in Vavuniya district, Sri Lanka. 60 farm family households' women were randomly selected from rural and urban area of Kovilkulam AI region of Vavuniya district in Sri Lanka and the data were collected by constructed questionnaire. The objectives of this study are to identify the factors contributing women participation in agriculture, to identify the constraints faced by the women in participating agriculture and to evaluate the women participation in decision making activity in agriculture. Minitab 15 and MS excel were used for data analysis. The level of women participation in agricultural activities was found out using chi-square test and the factors contributing for women participation in agricultural activities were identified using multiple regression analysis in urban and rural areas separately (α=0.05). The results revealed that 90% of the rural women respondents and 50% of the urban respondents participated in the agricultural activities which is a significant difference. The mean values of women participation in agricultural activities in urban and rural areas were 77 hours and 836 hours per annum respectively. The multiple regression model for women participation in urban area found that the participation of women negatively correlated with status of employment, age and education level (p=0.000). In rural area, age and educational level were negatively influencing on women participation in agricultural activities (p=0.000). R-square values of fitted regression models were 72 % and 91% in urban and rural area respectively 72% and 91% variation in respective women participation were explained by these models. The obstacles for the women in participation in agricultural activities were reported as lack of knowledge and training in agriculture field, family burden, cultural and social barriers and physical constraints. 60% of women from rural areas and 90% of women from urban areas were involved in decision making especially in the selection of crops and varieties for planting and livestock rearing. Enhancing the awareness and the technical knowledge to the women in the field of agriculture would contribute to increase income from agriculture at household level, district level and finally at national level. O objetivo deste estudo consiste em realizar um levantamento bibliométrico, visando mapear e analisar as publicações referentes ao tema agricultura urbana no Brasil, visando identificar as abordagens disponíveis sobre o tema, os tipos de agricultura urbana existente e por fim identificar os Estados com maior concentração de estudos sobre agricultura urbana. A pesquisa bibliométrica foi extraída dos documentos indexados na plataforma Scopus e Web of Science, sendo seleciondado os artigos cujos conteúdos estão diretamente relacionados ao tema. A discussão dos resultados foi desenvolvida de acordo com as seguintes etapas: (a) Busca por documentos a partir das palavras-chaves “urban agriculture” e “Brazil”; (b) Delimitação para apenas publicações de artigos, sendo encontrados 27 documentos; (c) Análise quantitativa da evolução cronológica das publicações, países, áreas de estudos, instituições, tipo de linguagem, tipo de documento, qualis das revistas e autor com mais publicações; e, (d) Análise qualitativa a partir da síntese dos artigos. O resultado estudo, verificou-se que as práticas da agricultura urbana no Brasil possuem abordagens com temas voltados para saúde, sustentabilidade, políticas públicas, paisagismo, trabalho em equipe, agricultura vertical, migração rural para urbana e agricultura indígena em áreas urbanas. Verificou-se também que os estudos sobre agricultura urbana no Brasil estão concentrados no estado do Pará, seguido de São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Recife e Amazonas. The multi-functionality inherent to the concept of Urban Agriculture (UA) can be associated with a recreational occupation, a method of overcoming financial distress, and a requalification of the landscape. However, urban development and the poor implementation of urban planning policies resulted in the loss of agricultural land and the emergence of residual and interstitial empty spaces within our cities. This article uses a case study of urban agriculture in Oporto City, as a guiding principle to recover and re-establish the continuous productive urban landscape. This paper expands on the currently existing urban planning policies. It establishes new ones, which strive for the protection and the insertion of the continuous productive urban landscape in urban design while regarding the urban/agricultural dichotomy and ensuring the occurrence of its processes, flows, and systems. This article defines urban agriculture as a method for the reliable integration of urban agriculture into urban space planning. The case draws on research in Oporto, focusing on the recovering of the ancient rural ring. This idea is based on recent and historical arguments to support the advantages of retrieving and introducing urban agriculture into open urban space. The paper concludes with a newly defined urban farming network in Oporto, which focuses on connecting these rural areas within the city with the rural areas outside the city.

The study examined the sustainable potential of urban and peri-urban agricultural practices in Nairobi. The study employed purposive, stratified and random sampling methods to select 149 respondents. Frequencies, means and standard deviations were used to analyse data. Findings indicate that the most popular urban and peri-urban practices were composting (221), open field farming (212), vegetable nurseries (155) and various forms of irrigation (140). Animal based practices were not found to be very popular. Majority ofthe practices were concentrated in the peri-urban areas. Popular practices were not found to be the most profitable. The most profitable practices were cattle rearing raising approximately Ksh.650,000, mushroom farming (Ksh.500,000), chicken rearing (Ksh.500,000), and hydroponics production (Ksh.450,000). These unpopular practices required expensive inputs, specialised technological and management skills and a controlled agricultural environment for production and efficient use of resources. Theserequirements qualified them to contribute towards the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability. There is need for a transformation from the current popular, less profitable and environmentally unfriendly practices categorized as uncontrolled environment agriculture practices to the controlled environment agriculture practices. This can be achieved through the provision of subsidised inputs and specialised technological and management skills to the farmers by the county government and other relevant stakeholders. This change with policy support will contribute to using sustainable agricultural practices that ensure food security and contribute to a sustainable food system in the city. The article discusses the impact of the growing urbanized world on the agro-industrial complex and agriculture, as well as a decrease in the attitude of agricultural producers to consumers. On a global scale, agriculture meets the needs of a rapidly growing urban population, including products that are becoming more energy-intensive, resource-intensive. Thus, the key questions regarding agriculture and urbanization are whether it is possible to meet the growing and changing demand for agricultural products from the growing urban population, while supporting the prosperity of agriculture and modernizing the principles of urban development. The article concludes that there are increasing trends in urbanization of rural regions in the conditions of new global economic realities, as well as the simultaneous process of deurbanization of countries with low economic potential.

This study aimed to develop land use scenarios in District Mapanget using Agroecology Zone-based Geographic Information System (GIS). The data used in this study are primary data and secondary data. Primary data were collected through surveys and direct observations in the field. The activities carried out field surveys to obtain state information field through taking pictures with a digital camera. Analysis of social data and data on potential farming is also done through the compilation of data to map the District Mapanget. Furthermore biophysical data agro-ecological, social and agricultural potential of the data compiled in a database system was using Quantum GIS program version 1.8. This study found that the use of agricultural land to non-agricultural land in the district Mapanget very difficult to avoid due to the low value of land from the agricultural sector compared to other sectors. So based on the evaluation conducted by comparing the map with a map of the existing condition of the District RTRW 2014-2034 Mapanget then it changes the function of which is no longer appropriate region where the agricultural area have been converted into non-agricultural. In order for this condition continues to be bad for the environment and agriculture will require efforts in the management and development in the District Mapanget, among others, the development of urban agriculture, every development in Sub Mapanget should always refer to the scenario Land use and Spatial plan of the District Mapanget that there are both carried out by the government, private or public. Urban agriculture has an important role for urban communities that suggested the need for land use scenarios in District Mapanget. Based on agroecological zone map and a map of the District RTRW 2014-2034 Mapanget then be collated Mapanget the District land use scenarios are divided by 3 (three) scenarios that city Scenario, Scenario frame the city, urban-rural scenario. The existence of land / space urban agriculture plays an important role in agricultural production systems and maintain the quality of the environment, because it is a major determinant spacious RTH (green open space) and the results of urban agriculture. In addition, urban farming provides employment and a source of additional revenue as well as environmentally sustainable society.

Le présent travail a pour objectif d’analyser et de dégager l’apport de la radio communautaire “Damergou” dans la promotion et le développement d’une agriculture performante et durable dans un contexte de changement climatique. La méthodologie utilisée s’est appuyée sur la recherche documentaire, l’analyse de documents de la grille des programmes de la radio, les enquêtes de terrain auprès des agricultures. L’analyse des données a été faite à l’aide du logiciel Excel de Microsoft office dans sa version 2013. Les résultats ont montré que les hommes ainsi que les femmes participent aux émissions de la radio avec une proportion élevée d’hommes (52,08 % contre 25 % de femmes). Il ressort aussi des résultats de l’étude que 96,15 % des producteurs participent avec le téléphone contre seulement 3,85 % pour la visite à la radio. En plus, les émissions sur la conservation du niebé avec des sacs (93,75 %), l’utilisation des produits phytosanitaires (91,25 %) et la production du compost (73,75 %) sont les plus ecoutées par les agriculteurs. Enfin, l’etude a montré que les contenus de ces émissions ont été egalement les plus adoptées par les agriculteurs. Ainsi, les radios communautaires constituent un moyen efficace pour promouvoir l’agriculture et le développement rural à travers le partage d’informations et de connaissances sur les bonnes pratiques agricoles. La radio communautaire “Damergou” de Tanout est donc un moyen important dans le partage et la promotion des bonnes pratiques agricoles dans cette localité à vocation agro-sylvo-pastorale. The aim of this study was to analyze and identify the contribution of the “Damergou” community radio station in the promotion and development of efficient and sustainable agriculture in the context of climate change. The methodology used was based on documentary research, the analysis of documents from the radio program schedule, field surveys of farmers. Data analysis was done using Microsoft office Excel software 2013 version. The results showed that both men and women participate in radio broadcasts with a high proportion of men (52.08 % against 25 % of women). The results of the study also show that 96.15 % of producers participate by telephone against only 3.85 % for the radio visit. In addition, programs on the conservation of cowpea with bags (93.75 %), the use of phytosanitary products (91.25%) and the production of compost (73.75 %) are the most listened to by farmers. Finally, the study showed that the contents of these broadcasts were also the most adopted by farmers. Thus, community radios are an effective way of promoting agriculture and rural development through the sharing of information and knowledge on good agricultural practices. The “Damergou” community radio in Tanout is therefore an important way in the sharing and promotion of good agricultural practices in this locality with an agro-sylvopastoral vocation.

Abstract In the article, which is a theoretical and conceptual introduction for the Special Issue of Moravian Geographical Reports on ‘New trends and challenges of urban agriculture in the context of Europe’, the authors resume and review diverging issues of urban agriculture, exploring and discussing them from a geographical perspective and in a wider context of the transformation of urban and rural spaces, urban regeneration and renewal, agricultural restructuring, multifunctionality, ecosystem services, land-use conflicts and social responsibility. After the introduction that depicts a changing role of agriculture in the context of urban and rural transformations, the current research on urban agriculture in Europe is summarised and reviewed. Then the main trends and concepts of growing and expanding urban agriculture are presented and discussed with a special emphasis on the challenges these pose to geographers.

A agricultura urbana está integrada ao ecossistema urbano, tem caráter multifuncional e propicia bons resultados ambientais, sociais e econômicos. Atualmente, a agricultura urbana está ganhando destaque nos cenários brasileiro e mundial, sendo importante compreender as iniciativas e demandas existentes para que políticas públicas adequadas possam ser implementadas. Nesse sentido, o objetivo principal do artigo é compreender e analisar as práticas da agricultura urbana em Porto Ferreira/SP. Para a consecução do objetivo da investigação, foram realizados pesquisa bibliográfica, trabalho de campo, com aplicação de formulário a agricultores urbanos a fim de compreender o papel e o perfil dos atores pesquisados, além de entrevistas com feirantes, comerciantes de mudas e autoridades municipais. Concluiu-se que, no caso de Porto Ferreira, as hortas urbanas promovem a inclusão social de pessoas de baixa renda, desempregados, idosos e mulheres, pois, no universo de 60 agricultores urbanos pesquisados, 55 destinam o que produzem ao autoconsumo e/ou a vendas nos próprios locais de produção, enquanto dois comercializam seus produtos na feira livre da cidade e três, diretamente a supermercados. Ficou demonstrado, igualmente, a necessidade de fomentar e reconhecer o potencial das hortas urbanas como ferramenta para geração de renda complementar, interação social dos agricultores urbanos envolvidos e, principalmente, o resgate cultural da produção de alimentos para consumo próprio.

Abstract This paper focuses on the ecosystem services which are provided by agriculture land and on the urban sprawl in the study area of municipality with extended powers Třebíč. The main focus of this article is to evaluate what ecosystem services are provided to Czech society by the agricultural land and assess their financial value and also evaluate which ecosystem services disappear or are limited due to urban sprawl on agricultural land. Generally, the topic of ecosystem services in agriculture comes under focus especially in view of the recurring drought in Europe and on-going climate change. Also the subject of urbanization and decreasing area available for agriculture is a wide-spread phenomena in Europe. The practical output of this paper will comprise of better insight on function and value of land under agriculture use which is lost due to urban development and raising the awareness amongst the society on the fast-growing trend of unsustainable urban sprawl.

Purpose: This research aimed to apply log-linear modelling to model association between multiple response categorical variables (MRCV) on urban agriculture and enhance data analysis of the paper by Basera, Chakaipa, & Dube (2020) impetus of urban agriculture on open spaces of Mutare City. Research methodology: The research data was obtained from households and farmers in Mutare City - urban and peri-urban (inclusive of plots in Weirmouth Park and Fern Valley area in December 2020. A total of one hundred and fifteen (115) household farmers were surveyed. Results: Simultaneous Pairwise Marginal Independence (SPMI) tests revealed the presence of associations. Log-linear tests revealed a perfect fit based on small standardized Pearson residuals and a strong positive association based on observed and model-predicted odds ratios on-field agricultural activities and use of herbicides. Log-linear and further application of heterogeneity tests revealed partial and near no perfect fit in other pairs of MRCVs with a strong negative association between municipality vacant places and field agricultural activities. Limitations: The research could not carry out log-linear model associations of three or more MRCVs because files exceeded 2GB in memory on both MI.test () function for SPMI tests and genloglin regressions. Contribution: The study contributes to urban agriculture planning especially in enactment of urban agriculture laws, agriculture one stop shop business centers housing farm input supply shops, farm produce shops, and determining fit support that can be rendered to urban farmers. Abstract Using ‘Urban Atlas’ as a data source, the authors present and critically discuss in this paper the application of figure-ground plans in combination with complex land-use maps as a tool for spatial analysis of urban agriculture in European cities and their multifunctional green infrastructure. The selected cities and metropolitan areas (including Dublin, Ruhr Metropolis, Geneva and Sofia) represent different regions in Europe from the Northwest to the Southeast. Urban fabric, agriculture and non-agricultural open spaces have been analysed and compared as the main land-use components. Agricultural open spaces include arable land with annual crops and permanent crops, such as vineyards, fruit trees and olive groves; pastures; as well as complex and mixed cultivation patterns. The results reveal the scale and land-use diversity of metropolitan regions and different spatial patterns of urban agriculture at the regional level and in central urban areas.

Nesse contexto, para permear o diálogo que a agroecologia trás para o urbano, buscando caracterizar a urbanidade contemporânea e seu potencial de criação do novo, de outros espaços para a agricultura, como na agricultura urbana, que vem crescendo muito nos últimos anos.
