Geographical gradients in selection can shape different genetic architectures in natural populations, reflecting potential genetic constraints for adaptive evolution under climate change. Investigation of natural pH/ p CO 2 variation in upwelling regions reveals different spatio-temporal patterns of natural selection, generating genetic and phenotypic clines in populations, and potentially leading to local adaptation, relevant to understanding effects of ocean acidification (OA). Strong directional selection, associated with intense and continuous upwellings, may have depleted genetic variation in populations within these upwelling regions, favouring increased tolerances to low pH but with an associated cost in other traits. In contrast, diversifying or weak directional selection in populations with seasonal upwellings or outside major upwelling regions may have resulted in higher genetic variances and the lack of genetic correlations among traits. Testing this hypothesis in geographical regions with similar environmental conditions to those predicted under climate change will build insights into how selection may act in the future and how populations may respond to stressors such as OA.

The response of a summer upwelling system to recent climate change in the Taiwan Strait has been investigated using a time series of sea surface temperature and wind data over the period 1982–2019. Our results revealed that summer upwelling intensities of the Taiwan Strait decreased with a nonlinear fluctuation over the past four decades. The average upwelling intensity after 2000 was 35% lower than that before 2000. The long-term changes in upwelling intensities show strong correlations with offshore Ekman transport, which experienced a decreasing trend after 2000. Unlike the delay effect of canonical ENSO events on changes in summer upwelling, ENSO Modoki events had a significant negative influence on upwelling intensity. Strong El Niño Modoki events were not favorable for the development of upwelling. This study also suggested that decreased upwelling could not slow down the warming rate of the sea surface temperature and would probably cause the decline of chlorophyll a in the coastal upwelling system of the Taiwan Strait. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic process of summer upwelling in the Taiwan Strait, and provide a sound scientific basis for evaluating future trends in coastal upwelling and their potential ecological effects.

Abstract. Upwelling is a significant part of the ocean circulation controlling largely the transport of cold waters to the surface and therefore influences ocean productivity and global climate. The Benguela Upwelling System (BUS) is one of the major upwelling areas in the world. Previous reconstructions of the BUS mainly focused on the onset and intensification in southern and central parts, but changes of the northern part have been rarely investigated in detail. Using the organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst record of ODP Site 1081 from the Late Miocene to the Pliocene we reconstruct and discuss the upwelling history on the Walvis Ridge with a special focus on the movement of the Angola–Benguela Front (ABF). We show that during the Late Miocene the Angola Current flowed southwards over the Walvis Ridge more frequently than today because the ABF was probably located further south as a result of a weaker meridional temperature gradient. A possible strengthening of the meridional gradient during the latest Miocene to early Pliocene in combination with uplift of south-western Africa intensified the upwelling along the coast and increased the upwelling's filaments over the Walvis Ridge. An intermediate period from 6.2 to 5.5 Ma is shown by the dominance of Habibacysta tectata, cysts of a cool-tolerant dinoflagellate known from the northern Atlantic, indicating changing oceanic conditions contemporaneous with the Messinian Salinity Crisis. From 4.4 Ma on, the upwelling signal got stronger again and waters were well-mixed and nutrient-rich. Also effects of Cunene River discharge into the South Atlantic are recorded since 4.4 Ma. Our results show a northward migration of the ABF and the initial stepwise intensification of the BUS.

AbstractThis paper investigates interannual variability of the tropical Indian Ocean (IO) upwelling through analyzing satellite and in situ observations from 1993 to 2016 using the conventional Static Linear Regression Model (SLM) and Bayesian Dynamical Linear Model (DLM), and performing experiments using a linear ocean model. The analysis also extends back to 1979, using ocean–atmosphere reanalysis datasets. Strong interannual variability is observed over the mean upwelling zone of the Seychelles–Chagos thermocline ridge (SCTR) and in the seasonal upwelling area of the eastern tropical IO (EIO), with enhanced EIO upwelling accompanying weakened SCTR upwelling. Surface winds associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the IO dipole (IOD) are the major drivers of upwelling variability. ENSO is more important than the IOD over the SCTR region, but they play comparable roles in the EIO. Upwelling anomalies generally intensify when positive IODs co-occur with El Niño events. For the 1979–2016 period, eastern Pacific (EP) El Niños overall have stronger impacts than central Pacific (CP) and the 2015/16 hybrid El Niño events, because EP El Niños are associated with stronger convection and surface wind anomalies over the IO; however, this relationship might change for a different interdecadal period. Rossby wave propagation has a strong impact on upwelling in the western basin, which causes errors in the SLM and DLM because neither can properly capture wave propagation. Remote forcing by equatorial winds is crucial for the EIO upwelling. While the first two baroclinic modes capture over 80%–90% of the upwelling variability, intermediate modes (3–8) are needed to fully represent IO upwelling.

Cet article présente les caractéristiques spatio-temporelles de l’humidité des sols à l’échelle de la France entre deux sous-périodes (1959-1987 et 1988-2019). Les principaux résultats montrent un assèchement généralisé des sols, surtout au printemps et en été, notamment pour trois secteurs : le sud-ouest, le nord-est et le pourtour méditerranéen. L’assèchement des sols peut s’expliquer par un important réchauffement des températures, généralisé et significatif à l’échelle de l’ensemble du territoire, mais bien plus marqué dans le sud-ouest et le nord-est, au printemps et en été. Cette élévation importante des températures entre les deux sous-périodes semble expliquer une très forte hausse de la demande évaporatoire de l’atmosphère, extrêmement marquée du printemps à la fin de l’été. Cette augmentation de l’évapotranspiration potentielle est ici présentée comme un des facteurs déterminant de l’assèchement des sols et de l’aggravation du risque de sécheresses agricoles liés au réchauffement climatique.

L’objectif principal de cet article est de mieux connaître les perceptions de personnes détenues en ce qui a trait aux effets sur le climat carcéral d’un règlement qui vise à restreindre l’usage du tabac dans les établissements de détention québécois. Une méthodologie mixte a été employée afin de recueillir des données auprès de 113 personnes détenues dans trois établissements de détention du Québec. Les données quantitatives ont été analysées de manière descriptive et comparative, alors que les données qualitatives ont fait l’objet d’une analyse thématique. Les résultats de l’étude démontrent que les personnes détenues, en désaccord pour la majorité avec l’implantation du nouveau règlement, ont perçu que son implantation a contribué à une hausse des tensions, du trafic de cigarettes et de leur valeur sur le marché noir. Selon leur position ou leur pouvoir, cette situation peut s’avérer profitable pour certains détenus alors qu’elle accroît la vulnérabilité d’autres détenus. L’hypothèse de départ voulant que l’entrée en vigueur d’un nouveau règlement sur le tabagisme entraîne des perturbations du climat carcéral est soutenue par les résultats obtenus.

Contexte : Il a été montré que bien que la simulation soit un moyen efficace d’entraîner les compétences communicationnelles (CC), le débriefing peut avoir des effets délétères sur le sentiment d’efficacité personnelle (SEP) et les attitudes de certains étudiants. Buts : Nous avons implanté un entraînement aux CC auprès de nos étudiants en médecine. Nos objectifs sont : 1) faire évaluer la qualité du climat instauré par le formateur lors du débriefing de la séance de simulation ; 2) connaître le SEP et les attitudes des étudiants envers les CC après le débriefing et ; 3) voir s’il existe des corrélations entre ces variables et l’évaluation qui est faite du climat de débriefing. Méthodes : 167 étudiants en troisième année de médecine ont répondu à un questionnaire en ligne clôturant la fin d’un entraînement aux CC. Ce questionnaire quantitatif investiguait leur perception quant à la qualité du climat du débriefing, leur SEP rétrospectivement rapporté avant et après l’entraînement et leurs attitudes. Résultats : Les résultats indiquent une augmentation du SEP à l’égard des CC après l’entraînement. En outre, des corrélations positives significatives ont été identifiées entre une évaluation favorable du climat de débriefing et des scores élevés d’amélioration de SEP et d’attitudes positives envers l’entraînement aux CC. Conclusion : Une évaluation favorable du climat de débriefing semble liée à des scores élevés de SEP et d’attitudes positives rapportés après l’entraînement. Cette étude exploratoire invite à s’intéresser davantage à ces variables (évaluation du débriefing, SEP, attitudes) et leur lien avec le transfert des CC entraînées vers la pratique.

Abstract. Continuous atmospheric records of O2/N2, CO2 and N2O obtained at Trinidad, California document the effects of air-sea exchange during coastal upwelling and plankton bloom events. The atmospheric records provide continuous observations of air-sea fluxes related to synoptic scale upwelling events over several upwelling seasons. Combined with satellite, buoy and local meteorology data, calculated anomalies in O2/N2 and N2O were utilized in a simple atmospheric transport model to compute air-sea fluxes during coastal upwelling. CO2 fluxes were linked to the oceanic component of the O2 fluxes through local hydrographic data and estimated as a function of upwelling intensity (surface ocean temperature and wind speed). Regional air-sea fluxes of O2/N2, N2O, and CO2 during coastal upwelling were estimated with the aid of satellite wind and SST data. Upwelling CO2 fluxes were found to represent ~10% of export production along the northwest coast of North America. Synoptic scale upwelling events impact the net exchange of atmospheric CO2 along the coastal margin, and will vary in response to the frequency and duration of alongshore winds that are subject to climate change.

Abstract Euphausiids are crustaceans with a complex life cycle that play a significant role in the trophic pathways of the highly productive Humboldt Upwelling System. We studied the effect of upwelling and climate variability on the austral spring distribution and abundance of krill life stages using 8 years of physical and biological sampling off northern Chile. During the study period, conditions shifted from negative to positive temperature anomalies and climate indices. Consequently, large interannual variability associated with the El Niño Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation was observed in all life stages, with lower abundances during their positive phases. The distribution patterns and the statistical associations with environmental variables show that the effect of upwelling varies ontogenetically. Eggs, nauplii, calyptopis, and furcilia larvae had higher abundances offshore, suggesting they are transported offshore through the Ekman layer. Juveniles and adults avoid advection via their deeper distribution and vertical migrations, and although they were present in the entire study area, abundances were higher to the south associated with lower salinity. This is the first study evaluating the impacts of climate variability on krill life stages and finds a direct effect of these low-frequency oscillations on krill reproduction and abundance in the HUS.

Cet article rend compte d’une recherche menée auprès d’un vaste échantillon de 1910 employeurs québécois par l’entremise d’une enquête électronique. Les résultats permettent de dégager les perceptions des employeurs à l’égard de la main-d’oeuvre proche aidante, ainsi que les mesures et les pratiques que ces employeurs déploient afin de s’ajuster aux besoins de leurs salariés et d’aider ces derniers à articuler leurs responsabilités de soins avec celles du travail, ces deux sphères étant des vases communicants. Les résultats évoquent les principales contraintes organisationnelles soulevées par les employeurs et qui constituent un frein à la mise en place de pratiques de conciliation travail-vie personnelle. Ceux ayant embauché des proches aidants au cours des cinq dernières années ont remarqué des effets bénéfiques pour les aidants ayant eu recours à des pratiques de conciliation : amélioration du moral, de la loyauté et de l’engagement organisationnel. Parallèlement, des effets négatifs sont observés, à savoir la surcharge de travail pour l’employé et la réduction salariale. Au final, les effets positifs perçus par les employeurs sont plus souvent évoqués que les effets négatifs. Quant aux effets organisationnels positifs découlant des mesures de conciliation offertes aux proches aidants, ceux-ci sont reliés à l’amélioration du climat organisationnel et à la réduction du taux de roulement et des coûts liés à l’absentéisme, effets positifs plus souvent évoqués que les conséquences négatives perçues que sont la surcharge de travail pour le supérieur immédiat et les collègues ainsi que l’impact financier lié aux pratiques de conciliation.

Abstract The seas along the Southern Coast of Java, which are parts of the Indian Ocean, are exposed to climate variability conditions that influence the dynamic of oceanographic parameters in these areas. In terms of interannual climate variability, previous studies showed that Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) variability is more influential than El Niño Southern Oscillation on the upwelling variability along the Southern Coast of Java. This study aimed to determine the effect of strong positive IOD in 2019 on the upwelling along the Southern coast of Java and investigate the possible mechanisms. This study used sea surface temperature data from OISST, wind speed data from the ASCAT satellite, chlorophyll-a data from the Aqua-MODIS, and sea level anomaly data obtained from altimetry satellites. All data were processed using the composite method. The results show enhanced southeast monsoon upwelling during the 2019 strong positive IOD along the Southern Coast of Java as denoted by higher positive (negative) anomaly of chlorophyll-a (SST) from the climatology. Interestingly, the easterly wind speed is lower than the climatology. Since the IOD influences upwelling along the Southern Coast of Java through the propagation of Kelvin wave, our results indicate the enhancing (weakening) upwelling (downwelling) Kelvin wave during the strong positive IOD in 2019 with the propagation speed of about 1.16 m/s. This Kelvin Wave propagation may amplify the coastal upwelling along the Southern Coast of Java.

L’élevage bovin est la principale activité économique des communautés peules du Nord Centre Bénin. Cette activité dans la commune de Tchaourou, au climat sud-soudanien à une saison pluvieuse et une saison sèche, est très vulnérable aux effets désastreux des mutations climatiques. La présente étude a eu pour objectif d’appréhender les perceptions des agropasteurs sur les mutations climatiques, et d’analyser leur vulnérabilité et leurs stratégies d’adaptation pour y faire face. L’approche méthodologique s’est reposée sur la collecte de données qualitatives socioanthropologiques issues d’enquêtes de terrain. Les données des entretiens individuels, des groupes de discussion et des observations directes ont permis de générer des matrices de sensibilité et de vulnérabilité des ressources et des agropasteurs, et d’analyser les pratiques adaptatives de ces derniers. Les résultats ont montré une grande similitude des manifestations des mutations climatiques perçues par les agroéleveurs. Ces manifestations étaient entre autres la hausse des températures, le prolongement de la saison sèche, la fin précoce de la saison des pluies et la baisse pluviométrique. Ces risques climatiques induisaient l’assèchement précoce des points d’eau, l’amenuisement du disponible fourrager et la dégradation de l’état sanitaire des animaux par le développement de pathologies. Face à cette instabilité du climat et à ses effets, les agropasteurs ont développé diverses stratégies pour en atténuer les impacts. Ces stratégies ont montré une performance variée selon leur efficacité et méritent d’être renforcées par une politique sectorielle sensible aux risques climatiques.

Abstract The annual cycle of tropical upwelling and contributions by planetary and gravity waves are investigated from climatological simulations using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) including three gravity wave drag (GWD) parameterizations (orographic, nonstationary background, and convective GWD parameterizations). The tropical upwelling is estimated by the residual mean vertical velocity at 100 hPa averaged over 15°S–15°N. This is well matched with an upwelling estimate from the balance of the zonal momentum and the mass continuity. A clear annual cycle of the tropical upwelling is found, with a Northern Hemispheric (NH) wintertime maximum and NH summertime minimum determined primarily by the Eliassen–Palm flux divergence (EPD), along with a secondary contribution from the zonal wind tendency. Gravity waves increase tropical upwelling throughout the year, and of the three sources the contribution by convective gravity wave drag (CGWD) is largest in most months. The relative contribution by all three GWDs to tropical upwelling is not larger than 5%. However, when tropical upwelling is estimated by net upward mass flux between turnaround latitudes where upwelling changes downwelling, annual mean contribution by all three GWDs is up to 19% at 70 hPa by orographic and convective gravity waves with comparable magnitudes. Effects of CGWD on upwelling are investigated by conducting an additional WACCM simulation without CGWD parameterization. It was found that including CGWD parameterization increases tropical upwelling not only directly by adding CGWD forcing, but also indirectly by modulating EPD and zonal wind tendency terms in the tropics.

AbstractArabian Sea sediments record changes in the upwelling system off Arabia, which is driven by the monsoon circulation system over the NW Indian Ocean. In accordance with climate models, and differing from other large upwelling areas of the tropical ocean, a 500,000-yr record of productivity at ODP Site 723 shows consistently stronger upwelling during interglaciations than during glaciations. Sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) reconstructed from the alkenone unsaturation index (UK′37) are high (up to 27°C) during interglaciations and low (22-24°C) during glaciations, indicating a glacial-interglacial temperature change of >3°C in spite of the dampening effect of enhanced or weakened upwelling. The increased productivity is attributed to stronger monsoon winds during interglacial times relative to glacial times, whereas the difference in SSTs must be unrelated to upwelling and to the summer monsoon intensity. The winter (NE) monsoon was more effective in cooling the Arabian Sea during glaciations then it is now.

Pour mieux comprendre l'impact des facteurs climatiques et l'influence de la diversité des habitats sur le dépérissement des cédraies des Aurès, une approche dendrochronologique basée sur la relation cerne-climat a été adoptée et appliquée à six stations, réparties sur deux cédraies méridionales, du Belezma et du Chélia (Atlas saharien), distantes de 60 km et impactées par différentes perturbations climatiques. Pour les deux sites étudiés, un sondage de 120 arbres a été réalisé, permettant d’extraire au total 240 carottes. Une chronologie maîtresse a été établie pour chaque station et une série moyenne de données a été élaborée pour chaque site. Les chronologies obtenues ont été standardisées afin d’atténuer les effets et les tendances non liées à la variation climatique. Puis, les chronologies résiduelles ont été utilisées pour appréhender la relation cerne-climat. Les résultats obtenus montrent une hétérogénéité de la réponse du cèdre de l’Atlas au sein des deux massifs. La durée et l'intensité des épisodes secs se sont différemment exprimées en fonction des deux sites d’étude, avec un nombre d'années sèches plus important pour le massif du Belezma, pour lequel l’indice standardisé de précipitations (SPI) révèle une récurrence d’épisodes pluvieux plus sévères à partir de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Un taux élevé d'années caractéristiques a été enregistré au niveau des deux stations étudiées. Cependant, un plus grand nombre d'événements extrêmes est enregistré au Belezma en comparaison avec le Chélia. Le signal climatique revêt une bonne homogénéité dans les deux sites, mais il est mieux perçu au Belezma. Les coefficients de corrélation expriment une plus forte relation des précipitations avec la croissance radiale au sein de la cédraie dépérie du Belezma, où le dépérissement semble être aggravé par l’âge vieillissant de cette formation, sa basse altitude, son sol maigre et ses peuplements équiennes. À contrario, l'altitude élevée, le sol profond et la structure en futaie jardinée de la formation du mont Chélia sont des facteurs qui semblent atténuer cette forte corrélation cerne-climat, et par conséquent les effets du déficit hydrique responsables du dépérissement sont significativement réduits.

AbstractThe northern Gulf of Guinea is a part of the eastern tropical Atlantic where oceanic conditions due to the presence of coastal upwelling may influence the regional climate and fisheries. The dynamics of this coastal upwelling is still poorly understood. A sensitivity experiment based on the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS) is carried out to assess the role of the detachment of the Guinea Current as a potential mechanism for coastal upwelling. This idealized experiment is performed by canceling the inertia terms responsible for the advection of momentum in the equations and comparing with a realistic experiment. The results exhibit two major differences. First, the Guinea Current is found to be highly sensitive to inertia, as it is no longer detached from the coast in the idealized experiment. The Guinea Current adjusts on an inertial boundary layer, the inertial terms defining its lateral extension. Second, the upwelling east of Cape Palmas disappears in absence of the Guinea Current detachment. This is in contrast with the upwelling east of Cape Three Points, which is still present. The results suggest that two different generation processes of the coastal upwelling need to be considered: the upwelling east of Cape Palmas (which is due to inertia, topographic variations, and advective terms effects resulting in important vertical pumping) and the upwelling east of Cape Three Points (which is principally induced by local winds). In addition to recent work ruling out the role of eddies, this study clarifies the processes responsible for this coastal upwelling.

Abstract. The Peruvian upwelling system hosts a marine ecosystem with extremely high productivity. Observations show that the Peruvian upwelling system is the only eastern boundary upwelling system (EBUS) with an out-of-phase relationship between seasonal surface chlorophyll concentrations and upwelling intensity. This “seasonal paradox” triggers the following questions: (1) what are the unique characteristics of the Peruvian upwelling system, compared with other EBUSs, that lead to the out-of-phase relationship, and (2) how does the seasonal paradox influence ecosystem functioning? Using observational climatologies for four EBUSs, we diagnose that the Peruvian upwelling system is the only one to reveal that intense upwelling coincides with deep mixed layers. We then apply a coupled regional ocean circulation biogeochemical model (CROCO–BioEBUS) to assess how the interplay between mixed layers and upwelling regulates the seasonality of surface chlorophyll in the Peruvian upwelling system. Our model reproduces the “seasonal paradox” within 200 km off the Peruvian coast. We confirm previous findings regarding the main contribution of mixed layer depth to the seasonality of chlorophyll, relative to upwelling. Deep mixed layers in austral winter cause vertical dilution of phytoplankton and strong light limitation, impacting growth. The effect of advection, though second-order, is consistent with previous findings for the Peruvian system and other EBUSs, with enhanced offshore export opposing the coastal build-up of biomass. In addition, we find that the relatively colder temperatures of upwelled waters slightly dampen phytoplankton productivity and further slow the build-up of phytoplankton biomass. This impact from the combination of deep mixed layers and upwelling propagates through the ecosystem, from primary production to export and export efficiency. Our findings emphasize the crucial role of the interplay between mixed layer depth and upwelling and suggest that surface chlorophyll may increase, along with a weakened seasonal paradox, in response to shoaling mixed layers under climate change.

Cet article présente les travaux récemment menés dans le massif du Mont-Blanc sur la relation entre climat et écroulements à différentes échelles de temps, les effets des épisodes caniculaires et la répartition et l'évolution du permafrost de paroi. Under global warming, permafrost degradation tends to intensify geomorphological processes on high mountain slopes. In the perennially frozen rock walls, the number and volume of rockfalls is increasing, causing safety problems not only at high altitude (infrastructure, mountaineers) but also for the valleys. This article summarizes recent work carried out in the Mont-Blanc massif on the climate-rockfall relationship at different time scales, the effects of heat waves, and the distribution/evolution of rock wall permafrost.

Dans cet article, nous étudions le cas spécifique du déroulement d’un dispositif collaboratif visant à favoriser l’orientation d’étudiant vétérinaires, avec la collaboration d’enseignants et de praticiens. L’évaluation mixte proposée du processus et de ces effets éclaire sur le rôle de ces professionnels, dans une perspective d’animatique des groupes. L’asymétrie de statuts, les rôles définis, le maintien d’un climat social propre à la génération d’un conflit socio-cognitif apparaissent comme essentiels dans tout dispositif d’accompagnement.

Abstract There are discrepancies between global climate models regarding the evolution of the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and also whether changes in ozone impact the surface under climate change. We use a 1D clear-sky radiative–convective equilibrium model to determine how a variety of factors can affect the TTL and how they influence surface climate. We develop a new method of convective adjustment, which relaxes the temperature profile toward the moist adiabat and allows for cooling above the level of neutral buoyancy. The TTL temperatures in our model are sensitive to CO2 concentration, ozone profile, the method of convective adjustment, and the upwelling velocity, which is used to calculate a dynamical cooling rate in the stratosphere. Moreover, the temperature response of the TTL to changes in each of the above factors sometimes depends on the others. The surface temperature response to changes in ozone and upwelling at and above the TTL is also strongly amplified by both stratospheric and tropospheric water vapor changes. With all these influencing factors, it is not surprising that global models disagree with regard to TTL structure and evolution and the influence of ozone changes on surface temperatures. On the other hand, the effect of doubling CO2 on the surface, including just radiative, water vapor, and lapse-rate feedbacks, is relatively robust to changes in convection, upwelling, or the applied ozone profile.

Cet article s’intéresse à la mesure et à la cartographie de l’îlot de chaleur urbain (ICU) dans la couche de canopée urbaine au sein de l’aire urbaine de Metz Métropole entre juin et septembre 2019. L’ICU a été suivi à partir d’un réseau de 23 stations météorologiques fixes permettant d’observer en continu la température de l’air à 3 m du sol. Les sites d’observation ont été soigneusement sélectionnés de façon à être représentatifs de différents types d’environnement (urbain, suburbain et périurbain) et typologies de revêtement (surfaces imperméables bitumées, surfaces végétalisées, étendues d’eau, etc.). L’objectif est d’évaluer les propriétés spatiales et temporelles de l’ICU au cours de cette période remarquablement chaude, et de déterminer son intensité à partir des données relevées en continu par le réseau de mesure. La période d’observation est particulièrement intéressante dans la mesure où elle se caractérise par la survenue des deux séquences caniculaires (25-30 juin et 21-26 juillet), offrant la possibilité de mieux comprendre le comportement thermique du tissu urbain et la dynamique de l’ICU local lors d’extrêmes chauds. Les résultats obtenus ont permis de mettre en évidence un ICU de l’ordre de 3°C en moyenne au sein des zones densément urbanisées, pouvant atteindre 7,1°C en situation caniculaire ce qui est conforme au modèle prédictif de Oke (1973) fondé sur la relation population-ICU en Europe. Une importante présence de végétation est toutefois susceptible de réduire son intensité et ses effets contrairement aux étendues d’eau qui, la nuit, ne semblent pas jouer le rôle de puits de fraîcheur.

Artificial reefs (ARs) have been widely used to restore the seabed habitat and protect biodiversity. They can effectively increase the dissolved oxygen content in the bottom water layer by their disturbing effect of upwelling and downwelling. The bottom water is prone to hypoxia in summer due to the extreme weather of the global climate and excessive biomass in some marine ranching in northern China. Therefore, how to effectively use the upwelling effect of artificial reefs to alleviate this problem is a necessary subject of research. Generally, ARs are arranged by different intervals in a unit form on the seafloor, and the flow field effect is different from that of the individual reefs. However, few studies have been focused on the effect of layout mode on the flow field of a unit reef (UR). In this paper, we selected the interval between reefs (IR) and the angle of inflow (AI) as the influencing factors to study the flow field effect of UR. The upwelling and wake regions of 64 URs were presented by the efficiency and disturbance indices related to the flow characteristics and proposed an optimal layout mode having the best performance of the upwelling effect. The results showed that the interactions among the AI, the transverse, and longitudinal IRs were significant, and the AI has a significant influence on the flow field. These indices were effective and contribute to the layout optimization of UR. The AI close to 45° has a significant influence on the flow field effect of UR.

En régions de climat tempéré, les terres cultivées ont un potentiel de stockage de carbone que l’on peut tenter d’utiliser pour réduire d’autant les émissions de CO2 atmosphérique par des pratiques culturales adaptées et notamment par les techniques culturales sans labour (TCSL). Cette capacité de stockage de carbone dans le sol a été évaluée sur l’essai de longue durée de Boigneville (Bassin de Paris, France) et a été comparée aux données de la littérature internationale. Le suivi du stock de carbone du sol sous une rotation maïs-blé indique une tendance à un stockage modéré tant en système labouré (0,10 t C ha-1 an-1 sur 28 ans) qu’en TCSL (respectivement 0,21 t et 0,19 t C ha-1 an-1 pour le travail superficiel et le semis direct sur cette même période). Avec une absence de différence significative entre le semis direct et le travail superficiel, l’effet spécifique moyen des TCSL évalué à 0,10 t C ha-1 an-1 sur 28 ans apparait sensiblement plus faible que celui mesuré sur les 20 premières années et évalué à 0,20 t C ha-1 an-1. Ces valeurs, inférieures à d’autres valeurs largement diffusées par ailleurs, et cette variation décroissante de la capacité de stockage avec la durée de TCSL sont cohérentes avec la tendance moyenne observée à partir d’un large échantillonnage de données de la littérature internationale. The regional impact of global climate change on the ocean circulation around the Galápagos Archipelago is studied using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) configured for a four-level nested domain system. The modeling system is validated and calibrated using daily atmospheric forcing derived from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset from 1951 to 2007. The potential impact of future anthropogenic global warming (AGW) in the Galápagos region is examined using the calibrated HYCOM with forcing derived from the IPCC-AR4 climate model. Results show that although the oceanic variability in the entire Galápagos region is significantly affected by global climate change, the degree of such effects is inhomogeneous across the region. The upwelling region to the west of the Isabella Island shows relatively slower warming trends compared to the eastern Galápagos region. Diagnostic analysis suggests that the variability in the western Galápagos upwelling region is affected mainly by equatorial undercurrent (EUC) and Panama currents, while the central/east Galápagos is predominantly affected by both Peru and EUC currents. The inhomogeneous responses in different regions of the Galápagos Archipelago to future AGW can be explained by the incoherent changes of the various current systems in the Galápagos region as a result of global climate change.

Walker circulation variability and associated zonal shifts in the heating of the tropical atmosphere have far-reaching global impacts well into high latitudes. Yet the reversed high latitude–to–Walker circulation teleconnection is not fully understood. Here, we reveal the dynamical pathways of this teleconnection across different components of the climate system using a hierarchy of climate model simulations. In the fully coupled system with ocean circulation adjustments, the Walker circulation strengthens in response to extratropical radiative cooling of either hemisphere, associated with the upwelling of colder subsurface water in the eastern equatorial Pacific. By contrast, in the absence of ocean circulation adjustments, the Walker circulation response is sensitive to the forcing hemisphere, due to the blocking effect of the northward-displaced climatological intertropical convergence zone and shortwave cloud radiative effects. Our study implies that energy biases in the extratropics can cause pronounced changes of tropical climate patterns.

A suite of ecological indicators was selected for communicating, in a comparable way, how fishing affects the state of several upwelling ecosystems and others in which small pelagic fish play key ecological roles. Detailed background and understanding of system-specific processes and changes is needed for proper interpretation of results. In particular, environmental forcing is important in driving dynamics in upwelling systems; fishing impacts cannot be understood without understanding the corresponding dynamics of the environment. The Saharan Coastal (Morocco) and southern Benguela, both having experienced upsurges in low-trophic-level species, differed from other ecosystems when considering indicator trends. The ecosystem off Portugal emerged as showing reduced signs of fishing impacts in recent years, although the change may also be reflecting climate change favouring recruitment and abundance of demersal stocks. The indicator suite confirmed general understanding that the Mediterranean ecosystems have been notably degraded for several decades. Results and conclusions from this descriptive synthesis are compared with other comparisons of more complex, model-derived indicators. Even in upwelling and comparable systems, the simple data-based indicators are useful in synthesizing information on the status of an ecosystem, in particular on the ecosystem effects of fishing, to provide an ecological diagnosis at the ecosystem level, to be used in decision-making. Indicators of recent ecosystem state and trends over time are needed to assess the effects of fishing, but more indicators measuring biodiversity attributes and environmental change would complement the suite, providing fuller assessment of the status of upwelling and comparable ecosystems.

L’analyse comparative des données météorologiques de la station rurale de Carpiquet avec une station expérimentale en périphérie de la ville de Caen a permis de montrer la présence en hiver d’un léger îlot de chaleur péri-urbain (ICPU) (moyenne de +0,4°C). Il est caractérisé par un maximum d’intensité en fin d’après-midi et début de soirée (+0,8°C) et des écarts faibles le reste du temps. Derrière cette image moyenne, une analyse du continuum temporel au pas de temps journalier puis horaire a mis en exergue des comportements différenciés selon les types de temps. Le caractère le plus original des résultats est la présence certes rare, mais significative en termes d’intensité, d’un îlot de fraîcheur péri-urbain (IFPU). Il se forme de nuit par temps clair et calme et se prolonge dans la matinée, jusqu’à présenter un maximum d’intensité vers 9 h UTC. Cette inversion par rapport au schéma classique de fonctionnement des îlots de chaleur urbain (ICU) s’explique par un mode d’occupation du sol favorable à la formation d’une poche froide par rayonnement nocturne, favorisée par l’absence totale de vent (effet de barrage du bâti et de la végétation) et par la faible densité urbaine, alors que sur la campagne ces mécanismes de refroidissement sont atténués par la persistance d’un léger flux. Cet IFPU résiste et s’intensifie en début de matinée, jusqu’à temps que le soleil et la turbulence de l’air ne viennent échauffer et disperser cette pellicule d’air froid plus dense. Ici, les conditions stationnelles semblent donc primer sur les effets purement urbains car l’agglomération de Caen ne présente pas une masse suffisante pour créer une « bulle chaude » jusque dans ses quartiers périphériques quand un type de temps radiatif s’impose.

Dans le monde entier, les productions animales sont aujourd’hui confrontées à des défis majeurs en matière de durabilité. Ces derniers sont exacerbés dans l'Union européenne (UE) où les questions relatives au réchauffement climatique, à l’environnement, à la santé humaine et au bien-être animal suscitent de nombreux débats. À côté des impacts négatifs, les productions animales peuvent également présenter des avantages sur les plans économique, territorial et nutritionnel. Certains systèmes d'élevage, notamment les systèmes herbagers, peuvent également avoir des effets positifs sur le climat et l'environnement. Les productions animales sont fortement régulées dans l'UE, alors que la consommation de produits animaux ne l'est pas ou très peu. Bon nombre des effets négatifs et positifs sont des biens publics, mal pris en compte par les acteurs privés et les marchés. Il existe donc une légitimité et une marge de manœuvre pour les politiques publiques visant à réduire les dommages et à augmenter les avantages de la production et de la consommation de produits animaux. La dernière partie de l'article explique comment cet objectif pourrait être atteint dans l'UE par le biais d'une Politique Agricole Commune (PAC) profondément révisée et basée sur les principes de l'économie publique.

Un protocole d'étude de la résistance génétique aux strongyloses gastro-intestinales a été mis en place sur des races locales d'ovins et de caprins du Sénégal. Des prélèvements de sang et des coproscopies ont été réalisés pendant deux ans sur des animaux de différents troupeaux de la zone de Louga en climat sahélien et de la zone de Kolda en climat soudano-guinéen. L'identité des pères étant inconnue dans ce contexte d'élevage, les apparentements étudiés étaient essentiellement les relations mère-descendant. Les caractères analysés étaient la coproscopie (trois prélèvements par an) en nombre d'oeufs par gramme de fèces (Opg) et l'hématocrite (deux prélèvements par an). Dans la région de Louga, le nombre d'individus étudiés (des deux espèces) était de 377 la première année et 606 la deuxième année. Dans la zone de Kolda, l'échantillon comprenait 671 animaux la première année, 725 la deuxième année. L'héritabilité et la répétabilité ont été estimées à l'aide d'un modèle « animal », avec comme effets fixés la combinaison village*saison*année, l'âge et le stade de lactation pour les mères, la combinaison village*saison*année, l'âge et le sexe pour les jeunes. La répétabilité moyenne intra-année était de 0,19 pour le caractère nombre d'Opg et 0,27 pour l'hématocrite. Elle était plus faible entre années : 0,12 pour le nombre d'Opg et 0,21 pour l'hématocrite. L'estimation de l'héritabilité a présenté des difficultés, à cause de la structure des données villageoises qui ne permettait pas d'estimer directement l'environnement maternel et les effets troupeaux, respectivement en raison de généalogies insuffisantes et de faibles effectifs par élevage. Les estimations de l'héritabilité variaient entre 0 et 0,33 pour le nombre d'Opg et entre 0 et 0,38 pour l'hématocrite selon l'échantillon analysé et le modèle utilisé. Les corrélations génétiques entre caractères n'ont pas pu être estimées. En revanche, les corrélations phénotypiques ont été estimées entre le nombre d'Opg et l'hématocrite, ainsi qu'entre chacune de ces deux variables et le poids des jeunes. Les contraintes liées à une étude génétique en milieu traditionnel ont été discutées.

Abstract. The Indian Ocean presents two distinct climate regimes. The north Indian Ocean is dominated by the monsoons, whereas the seasonal reversal is less pronounced in the south. The prevailing wind pattern produces upwelling along different parts of the coast in both hemispheres during different times of the year. Additionally, dynamical processes and eddies either cause or enhance upwelling. This paper reviews the phenomena of upwelling along the coast of the Indian Ocean extending from the tip of South Africa to the southern tip of the west coast of Australia. Observed features, underlying mechanisms, and the impact of upwelling on the ecosystem are presented. In the Agulhas Current region, cyclonic eddies associated with Natal pulses drive slope upwelling and enhance chlorophyll concentrations along the continental margin. The Durban break-away eddy spun up by the Agulhas upwells cold nutrient-rich water. Additionally, topographically induced upwelling occurs along the inshore edges of the Agulhas Current. Wind-driven coastal upwelling occurs along the south coast of Africa and augments the dynamical upwelling in the Agulhas Current. Upwelling hotspots along the Mozambique coast are present in the northern and southern sectors of the channel and are ascribed to dynamical effects of ocean circulation in addition to wind forcing. Interaction of mesoscale eddies with the western boundary, dipole eddy pair interactions, and passage of cyclonic eddies cause upwelling. Upwelling along the southern coast of Madagascar is caused by the Ekman wind-driven mechanism and by eddy generation and is inhibited by the Southwest Madagascar Coastal Current. Seasonal upwelling along the East African coast is primarily driven by the northeast monsoon winds and enhanced by topographically induced shelf breaking and shear instability between the East African Coastal Current and the island chains. The Somali coast presents a strong case for the classical Ekman type of upwelling; such upwelling can be inhibited by the arrival of deeper thermocline signals generated in the offshore region by wind stress curl. Upwelling is nearly uniform along the coast of Arabia, caused by the alongshore component of the summer monsoon winds and modulated by the arrival of Rossby waves generated in the offshore region by cyclonic wind stress curl. Along the west coast of India, upwelling is driven by coastally trapped waves together with the alongshore component of the monsoon winds. Along the southern tip of India and Sri Lanka, the strong Ekman transport drives upwelling. Upwelling along the east coast of India is weak and occurs during summer, caused by alongshore winds. In addition, mesoscale eddies lead to upwelling, but the arrival of river water plumes inhibits upwelling along this coast. Southeasterly winds drive upwelling along the coast of Sumatra and Java during summer, with Kelvin wave propagation originating from the equatorial Indian Ocean affecting the magnitude and extent of the upwelling. Both El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events cause large variability in upwelling here. Along the west coast of Australia, which is characterized by the anomalous Leeuwin Current, southerly winds can cause sporadic upwelling, which is prominent along the southwest, central, and Gascoyne coasts during summer. Open-ocean upwelling in the southern tropical Indian Ocean and within the Sri Lanka Dome is driven primarily by the wind stress curl but is also impacted by Rossby wave propagations. Upwelling is a key driver enhancing biological productivity in all sectors of the coast, as indicated by enhanced sea surface chlorophyll concentrations. Additional knowledge at varying levels has been gained through in situ observations and model simulations. In the Mozambique Channel, upwelling simulates new production and circulation redistributes the production generated by upwelling and mesoscale eddies, leading to observations of higher ecosystem impacts along the edges of eddies. Similarly, along the southern Madagascar coast, biological connectivity is influenced by the transport of phytoplankton from upwelling zones. Along the coast of Kenya, both productivity rates and zooplankton biomass are higher during the upwelling season. Along the Somali coast, accumulation of upwelled nutrients in the northern part of the coast leads to spatial heterogeneity in productivity. In contrast, productivity is more uniform along the coasts of Yemen and Oman. Upwelling along the west coast of India has several biogeochemical implications, including oxygen depletion, denitrification, and high production of CH4 and dimethyl sulfide. Although weak, wind-driven upwelling leads to significant enhancement of phytoplankton in the northwest Bay of Bengal during the summer monsoon. Along the Sumatra and Java coasts, upwelling affects the phytoplankton composition and assemblages. Dissimilarities in copepod assemblages occur during the upwelling periods along the west coast of Australia. Phytoplankton abundance characterizes inshore edges of the slope during upwelling season, and upwelling eddies are associated with krill abundance. The review identifies the northern coast of the Arabian Sea and eastern coasts of the Bay of Bengal as the least observed sectors. Additionally, sustained long-term observations with high temporal and spatial resolutions along with high-resolution modelling efforts are recommended for a deeper understanding of upwelling, its variability, and its impact on the ecosystem.

Environmental context Understanding the exchange of energy, gases and particles at the ocean–atmosphere interface is critical for the development of robust predictions of, and response to, future climate change. The international Surface Ocean–Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) coordinates multi-disciplinary ocean–atmosphere research projects that quantify and characterise this exchange. This article details five new SOLAS research strategies – upwellings and associated oxygen minimum zones, sea ice, marine aerosols, atmospheric nutrient supply and ship emissions – that aim to improve knowledge in these critical areas. Abstract This review focuses on critical issues in ocean–atmosphere exchange that will be addressed by new research strategies developed by the international Surface Ocean–Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) research community. Eastern boundary upwelling systems are important sites for CO2 and trace gas emission to the atmosphere, and the proposed research will examine how heterotrophic processes in the underlying oxygen-deficient waters interact with the climate system. The second regional research focus will examine the role of sea-ice biogeochemistry and its interaction with atmospheric chemistry. Marine aerosols are the focus of a research theme directed at understanding the processes that determine their abundance, chemistry and radiative properties. A further area of aerosol-related research examines atmospheric nutrient deposition in the surface ocean, and how differences in origin, atmospheric processing and composition influence surface ocean biogeochemistry. Ship emissions are an increasing source of aerosols, nutrients and toxins to the atmosphere and ocean surface, and an emerging area of research will examine their effect on ocean biogeochemistry and atmospheric chemistry. The primary role of SOLAS is to coordinate coupled multi-disciplinary research within research strategies that address these issues, to achieve robust representation of critical ocean–atmosphere exchange processes in Earth System models.

À partir d’un modèle de gravité en données de panel, nous estimons les effets sur les exportations du contrôle des émissions de CO2 d’un pays relativement à ses partenaires. Pour la première fois dans une étude sur la restriction environnementale, le modèle introduit des variables muettes correspondant aux flux commerciaux internes et externes aux groupes régionaux. Loin de pénaliser les exportations, la diminution des émissions de CO2 s’avère bénéfique aux performances extérieures des entreprises (1986-2003). Cet effet est renforcé dans un contexte d’intégration régionale. Cela vient conforter l’hypothèse de Porter, selon laquelle la politique environnementale stimule l’innovation et in fine la productivité moyenne d’une économie. Les accords internationaux sur le climat apparaissent ainsi comme une occasion de réorienter favorablement les économies nationales vers les technologies et les produits économes en énergie fossile.

La température ambiante est l’un des principaux facteurs climatiques affectant les performances des porcs en période estivale dans les régions tempérées et toute l’année dans les régions tropicales. Les températures ambiantes élevées ont des effets directs principalement sur les fonctions de reproduction du mâle ou de la femelle ou indirectement via une réduction de l’ingestion alimentaire sur les performances de lactation et de croissance. Après avoir brièvement rappelé les principes de la thermorégulation chez le porc et les effets de la chaleur sur leurs performances en fonction du stade physiologique, cet article fait le point sur les solutions utilisables pour atténuer les effets négatifs du climat chaud, en particulier, sur la possibilité de sélectionner des animaux thermotolérants. Cette approche consiste à produire des animaux moins sensibles au stress thermique et/ou ayant une thermorégulation plus efficace. Une des principales difficultés est de comprendre les mécanismes physiologiques impliqués dans l’adaptation à la chaleur et la nature des antagonismes entre les caractères de production et d’adaptation. Cette étape préliminaire conditionne le choix des critères mais également de la meilleure méthode de sélection. Comparativement aux autres espèces (volaille et ruminant), la variabilité génétique de la tolérance à la chaleur et les critères physiologiques ou zootechniques utilisables dans une démarche de sélection chez le porc sont assez peu connus. Cependant, des indicateurs de la sensibilité à la chaleur (Heat Shock Protein), de la thermogenèse (consommation résiduelle, protéines découplantes) ou de la thermolyse (rythme respiratoire, conductivité thermique cutanée) pourraient être des bons critères à considérer pour l’obtention d’une lignée thermotolérante.

Knowledge of processes underlying recruitment is critical for understanding marine population dynamics and their response to ocean climate. We investigated the relationship between coastal upwelling and early life history of black rockfish (Sebastes melanops), a midwater aggregating species, and CQB rockfishes (a solitary benthic species complex including Sebastes caurinus, Sebastes maliger, and Sebastes auriculatus), between two oceanographically distinct years on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. We analysed otolith microstructure to determine parturition and settlement dates, pelagic durations, and pre- and postsettlement growth rates. High CQB rockfish recruitment in 2005 was associated with prolonged downwelling and warm ocean temperatures, late parturition dates, fast presettlement growth, short pelagic durations, and small size-at-settlement. In contrast, high black rockfish recruitment in 2006 was associated with strong upwelling and cool ocean temperatures, slow presettlement growth, and protracted pelagic durations. Presettlement growth of both rockfish complexes increased with high sea surface temperature, but was unrelated to chlorophyll a concentration. Our results indicate that the same oceanographic conditions give rise to fast presettlement growth and short pelagic durations for both groups, but that different factors lead to strong recruitment in each.

Based on data from 16 chemistry-climate models (CCMs) and separate experimental results using a state-of-the-art CCM, the trends in the Brewer–Dobson circulation (BDC) during the second half of the 20th century (1960–2000) and the first half of the 21st century (2001–2050) are examined. From the ensemble mean of the CCMs, the BDC exhibits strengthening trends in both the 20th and 21st centuries; however, the acceleration rates of tropical upwelling and southern downwelling during 2001–2050 are smaller than those during 1960–2000, while the acceleration rate of the northern downward branch of the BDC during 2001–2050 is slightly larger than that during 1960–2000. The differences in the extratropical downwelling trends between the two periods are closely related to changes in planetary-wave propagation into the stratosphere caused by the combined effects of increases in the concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and changes in stratospheric ozone. Model simulations demonstrate that the response of southern downwelling to stratospheric ozone depletion is larger than that to the increase in GHGs, but that the latter plays a more important role in the strengthening of northern downwelling. This result suggests that, under the expected future climate, northern downwelling will play a more important role in balancing tropical upwelling.

Le Nouveau Management Public (NMP) induit de profonds changements dans les services publics de nombreux pays depuis trente ans. S’il existe un ensemble de discours sur les conséquences humaines des changements organisationnels et managériaux qu’il entraîne, l’impact de ces changements sur la souffrance au travail n’a pas été mesuré empiriquement. Notre recherche se propose d’examiner l’impact de ces évolutions sur une forme spécifique de souffrance au travail : l’épuisement professionnel. Pour cela nous présentons les résultats d’une enquête menée dans une collectivité territoriale française mettant en relation la perception, par les agents, de changements liés au NMP et des indicateurs d’intensification et de souffrance au travail. L’analyse réalisée sur un échantillon de 1118 agents publics permet d’indiquer que le NMP a un impact sur l’épuisement professionnel par l’intermédiaire de ses effets sur la charge de travail perçue par les agents et sur le climat de violence psychologique.

Abstract A simulation experiment is conducted to inquire into the mean climate state and likely trends in atmospheric infrared radiation spectra. Upwelling and downwelling spectra at five vertical levels from the surface to the top of the atmosphere (TOA) are rigorously calculated from a climate-model-simulated atmosphere for a 25-yr period. Tracing the longwave radiation flux vertically and spectrally renders a dissection of the greenhouse effect of the earth atmosphere and its change due to climate forcings and feedbacks. The results show that the total outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) at the TOA may be conserved due to 1) compensating temperature and opacity effects and 2) contrasting temperature changes in troposphere and stratosphere. The tightly coupled tropospheric temperature and opacity effects reduce the overall tropospheric contribution to OLR change to be comparable to the overall stratospheric contribution, which suggests that transient OLR change is constrained by the relative strengths of stratospheric and tropospheric temperature changes. The total OLR energy, however, is redistributed across its spectrum. The earliest detectable global climate change signal lies in the CO2 absorption bands, which results from stratospheric cooling and the CO2 opacity effect. This signal can be detected much sooner than surface temperature change and is little affected by achievable instrument accuracy. In contrast, both tropospheric temperature and opacity effects increase downwelling longwave radiation (DLR), which makes DLR a verifiable aspect of global warming. The time it takes to detect surface DLR change roughly equals that of surface temperature change. Measuring downwelling radiances at strong water vapor lines at the tropopause can particularly help monitor stratospheric water vapor.

A spurious band of enhanced sea surface temperature (SST) variance (SBEV) is identified over the northern equatorial Atlantic in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) Climate Model, version 2.1. The SBEV is especially pronounced in boreal spring owing to the combined effect of both anomalous atmospheric thermal forcing and oceanic vertical upwelling. The SBEV is a common bias in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), found in 14 out of 23 models. The SBEV in CMIP5 is associated with the atmospheric thermal forcing and the oceanic vertical upwelling, similar to GFDL CM2.1. While the tropical North Atlantic variability is only weakly correlated with the Atlantic zonal mode (AZM) in observations, the SBEV in CMIP5 produces conditions that drive and intensify the AZM variability via triggering the Bjerknes feedback. This partially explains why AZM is strong in some CMIP5 models even though the equatorial cold tongue and easterly trades are biased low.

In recent decades, the Arctic has been warming and sea ice disappearing. By contrast, the Southern Ocean around Antarctica has been (mainly) cooling and sea-ice extent growing. We argue here that interhemispheric asymmetries in the mean ocean circulation, with sinking in the northern North Atlantic and upwelling around Antarctica, strongly influence the sea-surface temperature (SST) response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing, accelerating warming in the Arctic while delaying it in the Antarctic. Furthermore, while the amplitude of GHG forcing has been similar at the poles, significant ozone depletion only occurs over Antarctica. We suggest that the initial response of SST around Antarctica to ozone depletion is one of cooling and only later adds to the GHG-induced warming trend as upwelling of sub-surface warm water associated with stronger surface westerlies impacts surface properties. We organize our discussion around ‘climate response functions’ (CRFs), i.e. the response of the climate to ‘step’ changes in anthropogenic forcing in which GHG and/or ozone-hole forcing is abruptly turned on and the transient response of the climate revealed and studied. Convolutions of known or postulated GHG and ozone-hole forcing functions with their respective CRFs then yield the transient forced SST response (implied by linear response theory), providing a context for discussion of the differing warming/cooling trends in the Arctic and Antarctic. We speculate that the period through which we are now passing may be one in which the delayed warming of SST associated with GHG forcing around Antarctica is largely cancelled by the cooling effects associated with the ozone hole. By mid-century, however, ozone-hole effects may instead be adding to GHG warming around Antarctica but with diminished amplitude as the ozone hole heals. The Arctic, meanwhile, responding to GHG forcing but in a manner amplified by ocean heat transport, may continue to warm at an accelerating rate.

Climate change has caused shifts in seasonal timing of climatic events such as the onset of spring upwelling, which can lead to temporal mismatches between fish spawning and production of zoopklankton prey. Fishing may exacerbate mismatches through age truncation, particularly when offspring survival is dependent on maternal age, but no-take reserves or harvest reductions might buffer this effect. To quantify the potential for management to buffer synergistic interactions between fishing and climate, we developed a dynamic population model of a harvested species where larval survival depended on spring transition timing and maternal age. We applied this model to rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) after verifying empirically that spring transition timing affects their recruitment success. We found that yield and persistence changed more with maternal-age-dependent larval provisioning than maternal-age-dependent spawning timing across a range of spring transition timings, especially with environmental stochasticity. Either implementing reserves or reducing fishing can mitigate impacts on larval survival, but reserves convey the added benefit of decreased sensitivity of yield and persistence to fishing. However, reserve buffering effects decreased with the inclusion of environmental stochasticity.

Dans leurs efforts pour atteindre des objectifs de réduction des émissions de gaz à effets de serre, les villes font face à plusieurs défis, dont notamment le refus et les réticences des citoyens aux mesures climatiques. En matière de mobilité, ce problème est d’autant plus important qu’il touche aux phénomènes de « dépendance au sentier » et de l’automobilisme qui l’accompagnent : logistique et infrastructures, politique et économie, comportements et attitudes, temps et activités. Par le biais d’un sondage réalisé auprès de 650 Lyonnais, l’étude offre un portrait des motivations et des raisons de leur rejet relatif des modes doux de transports. L’étude montre que le changement climatique n’est pas un facteur de décision dans la mobilité quotidienne, que le confort, la rapidité et la liberté sont plus déterminants et ce, même pour les acteurs pour qui le climat représente le défi du 21e siècle. L’article termine avec quelques réflexions sur les implications pour une stratégie de politiques urbaines de déplacements.
