This study argues that the provision of library services in Kenyan public universities is characterised by extremely inadequate resources in terms of funds, information materials, equipment and staff. Private university libraries experience these problems albeit to a lesser degree. Although there is widespread opinion among students, lecturers as well as university administrators that university libraries play a critical role in the teaching, research, and learning activities, there is also awareness that university libraries in Kenya, especially those in public universities are not effectively providing services which has limited their role in research and learning in the university. Finally, modern information and communication technology is being incorporated in the management of university libraries in Kenya. However, this trend has been hindered by first, lack of funds to purchase equipment such as computers and set up networks, secondly by lack of skilled personnel in information technology, and finally by poor telecommunications infrastructure in the country. There is therefore need for adoption of strategic planning in all areas of library management and to remain viable sources of information, university libraries in Kenya have to make use modern information and communication technology. This will enable university libraries to facilitate better access to local and global information for example through electronic and internet media.

Bibliography: leaves 251-262.
The investigation was undertaken to establish, in the first place, whether it is correct to assume that university library managers in South Africa do understand the main tenets of marketing. Secondly, the investigation was undertaken to determine whether these librarians actually do implement some or all of the principles of marketing in the management of their libraries. The study was carried out in two parts: a literature survey and an empirical investigation. The investigation was confined to university libraries in South Africa. The literature survey of the relevant marketing literature had a twofold purpose. In the first place, the marketing of libraries could only be properly appreciated within the context of understanding what is meant by marketing. Secondly, it was an underlying assumption of the investigation that in order to determine whether the management of South African university libraries did understand and apply the principles of marketing, the questions posed to them in the survey would of necessity have to reflect the principles, concepts, terminology and techniques of marketing, as established in the literature survey. The survey of marketing literature therefore endeavoured to establish clearly the main tenets of marketing and the techniques of marketing planning, the broadened marketing concept which has extended marketing to non-profit organizations, and, the significance of the interactive relationship of services marketing. A survey of the relevant literature of librarianship was undertaken to gain an insight into how marketing was perceived by the Anglo-American library world. It was against this broader background of the literature of librarianship that the South African experience was considered. As part of the empirical investigation a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to the respondents in order to determine whether the principles of marketing are understood and implemented by university libraries in South Africa. The analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire indicated that the management of South African university libraries have a general understanding of the principles of marketing, although at present only a small minority have an in-depth knowledge of it. From the analysis of the data it is also apparent that South African university library managers to a greater or lesser extent do carry out some of the main activities of marketing, although, for the present, they do not necessarily consider that they are implementing formal marketing planning in their libraries. Only a small minority of university libraries are actually engaged in some formal marketing activities.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the displays and exhibitions in university libraries. It was conducted by questionnaire survey on six theses: Frequency and purpose, Staffing, Funding, Space and safeguards, Subjects, materials and sources, and Marketing. The results reveal that most libraries held displays and exhibitions and thought displays and exhibitions as marketing and educational ser-vices to patrons. But supporting resources such as staffing, funding, space, security, and facilities were informal and scant. To improve the displays and exhibitions, this paper suggests that libraries should pay more resources and concerns on displays and exhibitions to achieve the marketing and educational goal. Besides, librarians play important roles in displays and exhibitions. To plan a professional and successful displays and exhibitions, librarians need more support on training, display knowledge and credits.

Universities are increasing efforts to assist faculty, students, and community partners to bring inventions to market. As state funding for higher education continues to shrink, universities are looking for new revenue streams to support teaching, research, and learning. Campus commercialization efforts are a strategy to promote economic development opportunities that benefit the community and society at large. Commercialization efforts on campus include technology transfer offices, incubator parks, and joint ventures between the university, investors, and corporate entities. Academic libraries have the opportunity to partner with campus technology transfer efforts and expand librarian roles and responsibilities to support commercialization, innovation, and entrepreneurship on campus

The development of information and communication technologies, and wide spread of the Internet and its associated technologies have brought about tremendous changes in the reference department of academic libraries, and in the attitudes and expectations of both information professionals and users. Many academic libraries across the globe have embraced Web technologies to fulfil users reference needs in a digital environment. This study aimed to investigate and analyse digital reference services (DRS) in university libraries in Pakistan. It focused on the nature and level of DRS, technologies used for the provision of the service, usage, staffing, marketing, funding, ICT infrastructure available for the service, and looked at the issues faced by academic libraries in implementing and managing the service. A mixed methods research approach combining both quantitative and qualitative methods was employed to achieve the aim and objectives of the study. The quantitative data for the study were collected through an online survey. A total of eighty five university libraries (both in public and private sectors) from all the four provinces, the federal capital and Azad Jammu & Kashmir participated in the survey. The quantitative data were supplemented by the qualitative data which were gathered through semi-structured interviews with the heads of fifteen leading university libraries. Findings suggest that DRS is at an early development stage in university libraries in Pakistan, with a small number of libraries offering the service. Most of the academic libraries which have implemented this cutting-edge service, are large libraries equipped with good human and technological resources. The libraries have mostly developed asynchronous digital reference systems by employing e-mail and web forms. The usage of the service is lower than that of in-person reference in academic libraries due to factors, such as libraries failure to effectively market the service, lack of ICT skills among users, lack of ICT facilities available for users. It was found that the libraries lack skilled and competent LIS professionals to staff the service. Factors contributing to the scarcity of skilled human resources in academic libraries include the lack of in-house training for DRS, shortage of continuing professional development courses in the country, and deficiencies in LIS curricula offered by the country s library schools. A number of issues which affect the implementation and management of DRS in academic libraries have been identified. They include: scarcity of competent human resources; access to appropriate digital resources; unavailability of suitable software for DRS; financial constraints; lack of ICT facilities; absence of a digital reference policy; lack of ICT application; paucity of resources; electricity supply; inadequate physical facilities; lack of local research and literature on DRS.

This research project is a comparative study of management of two university libraries (University of the Western Cape and Dhaka University) from two different countries (South Africa and Bangladesh). This research was to identify and document how the functions of management are applied in both libraries.

A sample of the two university libraries&rsquo
users, librarians, and library staff were taken. The questionnaire, interview, observation and documentary sources of information were major methods of data collection. In order to provide a brief presentation on how the management functions were applied at other university libraries, a description of how some university libraries in the U.K, U.S.A, Eastern countries and Africa are given. The findings of the study revealed that the problem of inadequate financial support is true for both University libraries, and is the major cause amongst other weaknesses. Both libraries still use a large percentage of non-professional staff and the library service is in desperate need of personnel. However, the observed difference between DUL and UWCL in this comparative study was significant. Services offered in both libraries differ in some cases such as: Consortia, Inter library loans, OPAC, CD-search, e-journals and multimedia. These areas still need to be developed at DUL. UWC have the most of these facilities. Although it needs to improve on aspects such as e-journals, access to data-bases and open access on the Internet.

In this study 64 web based services (bibliographical, patron education, patron communication and patron publication services) and best practices offered by the 70 top world university libraries and 39 top Indian University libraries were studied using different data analysis techniques like cross-tabulating for average scores and Pearson correlation coefficient and tests like Chi-Square Test and T-Test were applied to the raw data collected for final results. The library rankings as per their web-based services were correlated with their university rankings as per Webometric rankings and found that library web-based services rankings are correlating with their university rankings. Therefore, developing countries like India should improve their library web-based services rankings to improve their rankings at global level.

The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive examination of university libraries in Greece seen in the European context. To this end, the thesis: i. discusses the context in which Greek university libraries have developed and the challenges they face; ii. examines the factors that affect their operation and development; iii. assesses their role in university education in supporting the informational, educational and research needs of the academic community; iv. compares their position with similar libraries in other member states of the European Union and in Scandinavia; v. suggests actions needed in order that university libraries in Greece should develop further and play their role better. In this study a standard model for university libraries is developed and performance indicators and methodologies which are proper for this model are used. University libraries are examined as open, dynamic, multi-goal seeking and purposeful systems. They consist of resources which are transformed into outputs for the benefit of their users. Inputs, outputs and outcomes can be measured in a greater or less accuracy but measurement itself is meaningful only if it is placed in some kind of context. University libraries operate within a given environment. They receive their inputs from this environment, and their outputs are used by people or other systems in the environment. They are also constrained by factors in this environment such as the social, economic, educational, technological, etc. In this study not only the performance indicators themselves but also the relationships between them that are indicative of performance were analysed. The main findings of the study are related to the environment within which Greek University Libraries operate, the organisational structures, and administrative practices applied, issues concerning staff and the way they affect library development, the provision of library material, the organisation of technical services, and the reader services that are provided. Library performance is assessed in a number of ways. The indicators produced and comparisons with the state of development of university libraries in other European countries show that Greek University libraries fall behind them in terms of almost all indicators used. It appears that Greek University libraries are weak in meeting the needs of their users in both education and research.

Contemporary organisations including university libraries are operating in a climate of continuous change. Preserving their traditional role as gatekeepers to data and information is not enough; they need to take a further step to becoming learning organisations. Due to the limits of knowledge and study in the field, the study aims to investigate and propose a model for developing university libraries into learning organisations. The researcher used six university libraries in Thailand as a case study. Multiple methods of data collection: document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and observation were employed in order to gain an understanding on their transformation efforts. A new model is then proposed for investigating the development of university libraries into learning organisations, comprising the Diamond-shape model and Contextual model. Human resource development and knowledge management practices were found to be the most critical practices in building a learning organisation and then used as the two foci of the Diamond-shape model for investigating the library practices. There are two dimensions employed in the model: the extent to which 1) human resource development and knowledge management are implemented and 2) the two operate measured on a scale ranging from the mechanistic to fully integrated level. Development of the Contextual model is guided by Garvin’s Three Ms framework, comprising the aspects of Meaning, Management, and Measurement, with one more aspect, Critical Success Factors, further added to supplement the three Ms for investigating the libraries’ transformation based on their organisational context. The proposed model provides a new way of investigation by taking into account of the two interrelated concepts in terms of how they can be combined to support building a learning organisation, together with taking into consideration of their context and culture. By this means, the model promotes a holistic understanding by identifying the necessary practices as well as prevailing aspects that might impede transformational change into a learning organisation and the results of the investigation can be used to propose actions to transform the university libraries into fully-fledged learning organisations. The model was applied to the six case libraries to confirm its validity. Limitations of the study were considered and recommendations for further research were proposed, including conducting a study in different research settings to ensure transferability; collecting data from library staff to gain their perspectives; and exploring the aspect of leadership, information technology, and power and politics in detail.

Thesis MSc (Clinical Psychology))-- University of Limpopo, 2011.
Psychological and neuropsychological assessment in South Africa currently faces various challenges, among which, is the prominent need for tests that are standardised for the multi-cultural South African context. The absence of adequate standardisations and normative data currently hamper the confidence with which tests can be used in South Africa. This research project aimed to construct a preliminary standardisation of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) for Setswana-speaking university students. The testing instructions were translated to Setswana and 93 participants were assessed using a computerised version of the WCST. Hypothesis tests showed that some sub-scores significantly differed from the US norms and others did not. The distribution ofWCST performance in the study population does, therefore, not follow the same distribution as the US distribution and a need was identified to construct new normative data. Regression analysis indicated that not gender, age, or level of education influenced participants' WCST scores for all sub-scores, with the exception of the Trials to complete first category score that was influenced by age. One normative table was thus constructed for the entire 18- to 29-year-old age group for the variables Number of categories completed, Total number of correct responses, Total number of errors, Perseverative responses, Perseverative errors, Non-perseverative errors, Failure to maintain set, Learning to learn and Percent conceptual level responses, whilst separate norm tables for the 18- to 19-year-old and 20- to 29-year-old age groups were constructed for the Trials to complete first category sub-score. Furthermore, the WCST displayed adequate internal consistency in the study population. These norms and psychometric properties are, however, subject to certain limitations and it is thus recommended that a full standardisation of the WeST be constructed

The purpose of this project was to investigate job satisfaction at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Library (CPUT). Academic libraries throughout the world and in South Africa have undergone massive change in the last few years. CPUT Library is the result of the merger of two technikon libraries in 2005. The study aimed to investigate the impact of the merger on staff job satisfaction. If libraries are to meet the challenges of change, they need satisfied and committed staff. This dissertation project is framed by two closely related models in human resources management, namely Herzberg‟s two factor theory of motivation and Hackman and Oldham‟s Job Characteristics Model (JCM). Questionnaires were used to gather data from 91 library staff in CPUT. A total of 44 responded. The survey identified areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction among staff and the impact of the merger on staff who were employed before 2005. The study finds that 66% report overall job satisfaction with strong satisfaction with the work itself and the sense of accomplishment it brings. The majority of library staff is dissatisfied with promotion prospects and work distribution. Despite the years of restructuring, there are several comments on library structures. The need for more participative style of management and clear reporting structures are mentioned. The four questions on respondents‟ future plans reveal that affective commitment to the institution is not very high. Respondents like their work but 48% say they would accept a job outside the CPUT Library and only 50% claim to be proud to say they work at CPUT Library, with another 27% neutral. There are mixed findings on the impact of the merger, which might well be connected to the lack of institutional commitment. Only 50% of respondents who were at CPUT before the merger claim to be more satisfied now than before it. And the open-ended questions uncover the challenges in building or rebuilding a sense of belonging.

In this day and age, technology keeps advancing thereby enabling electronic libraries to be one of the most useful sources of information. Traditional, physical libraries are, however, still in existence and one would wonder what the impact of online library is on physical libraries. In this research, the impact of electronic libraries on physical libraries in a South African university is evaluated. The main purpose of this study was to explore the impact of electronic libraries on physical libraries. The goal of the study was to conceptualize a framework for understanding the impact of Electronic library on Physical library which was accomplished by finding out whether the number of physical library users had increased or decreased in terms of the usage of the physical library in the past five years, what challenges are being faced by physical libraries due to the availability of electronic libraries and finally by evaluating the impact of electronic libraries on physical libraries.

The need for reference librarians to assume new roles has been widely discussed, and being more proactive in working with faculty generally plays a large role in these discussions. In many institutions, however, these shifts have not occurred as quickly as hoped. Although there may be a number of reasons for this, one of the most important is that there is no best practice that can be broadly implemented across libraries or even within a single library. Rather, it is critical to identify the needs of faculty and match them with both the skills and knowledge of librarians and the resources of libraries. Identification and exploration of these possibilities is only viable through dialogue and partnership with faculty. This poster will present a number of examples of these partnerships at Purdue University, as well as support resources that need to be in place for success. Examples will include partnerships with academic programs to increase faculty awareness of resources to improve teaching, fostering information literacy in interdisciplinary courses, and collaborating to curate research data.

Academic libraries have not typically been able to build partnerships with K-12 education in ways that could both impact our information literacy mission and the goals of our universities surrounding student achievement and academic persistence. However, these partnerships are important in the big picture, as libraries try to affect information literacy and student achievement. Partnerships with pre-university students can be accomplished in various ways, but one avenue is working through college preparation and academic outreach programs affiliated with the university. Since 2010, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries have been collaborating with the Office of Admissions on an innovative program working with high school seniors through the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy (NCPA). The UNL Libraries have been able to demonstrate a strong connection with the students as they enter college, helping impact student retention and achievement statistics. Moreover, the project has improved the information literacy skills of the cohort’s students, by starting to work with them from the high school level.

Fundraising is a new way to help university libraries to fight for limited budget since the official support from the government and universities is gradually declining over the last two decades. There is little research on this topic in our country, so this study aims at revealing current situation of university library fundraising in Taiwan, and find out the possible solutions on library fundraising work. The research methods applied in this study include literature review, web-content analysis and in-depth interview: the literature includes fundraising theories, methods and successful case studies of the university libraries in the United States. The web-contents being analyzed are retrieved from 12 university libraries in the “Aim for the Top University Plan” administered by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan). As for the in-depth review, the interviewees are 12 university librarians and 10 managers from these 12 university libraries. This study finds four major general principles for university libraries when doing fundraising work: first, establishing a team to undertake library fundraising, second, seeking potential donors, third, participating in other fundraising activities, and the final step is maintaining a good fundraising management. Furthermore, some essential elements commonly mentioned by the fundraising experts: support from university principal, commitment of librarian, fundraising goals that live up to donors’ expectations, and an extensive fundraising network. Based on the interview result, most university libraries in Taiwan have not focused on fundraising work, and there are relatively few donors who are willing to donate to university libraries. Although almost every library has general guidelines on fundraising, few of them actively promote the need of fundraising. It may result from the lack of professional fundraisers in the libraries or proper fundraising training to library staffs. The most common practices on fundraising are: promoting fundraising news via library websites, attracting funding with needing on library collection and space, encouraging donors give small amounts of money to support academic journals, and cooperating with enterprises and companies. However, there are three difficulties on fundraising work mentioned by the 12 university librarians: for one, most librarians and even university librarians are not aware of the necessities and the imperative of fundraising, and librarians also lack of fundraising training; for another, the universities usually do not support library fundraising; for yet another, the donors’ motivation to give to university libraries is not strong. From the research result, the researcher have some suggestions to universities and university libraries: the university chairperson or financial manager should give more support to libraries; the university librarians need to lead the whole library to learn how to be a fundraiser, and they also have to market their libraries to attract gifts; the staffs have to be more open-minded and understand the need on fundraising. This paper is a preliminary study on fundraising for university libraries in Taiwan. The research explores possible ways to address fundraising challenges and hope to build a prospective fundraising program. Further studies on a larger scale investigating on other university libraries, or the studies on donors’ motivation, will be recommended.

University Libraries, categorized as research libraries, are the heart of universities. The Special Collections are important assets of these libraries, and how to protect them from deteriorations requires our attention. In Taiwan, there has been not research on special collection preservation in university libraries. This thesis involves field trip in university libraries’ special collection department, literature review on papers in this topic and interviews with librarians and conservators. The goal is to provide a reference resource for the librarians to consult with while choosing suitable solution for special collection preservation and to understand the difficulties in special collection preservation. As a result, the cultural development of the school and the community can be reflected by preserving and promoting the unique resources of the university. Data in this thesis are collected from interviews and observation. After generalizing these data, this thesis focus on three aspects: 1. The management status of special collections in university libraries. 2. Security measures on special collections. 3. Preservation measures on special collections. 4. The preservation and management difficulties in special collections. The finding of this thesis shows the following suggestions: 1. Set up special collections preventive conservation and security maintenance policy, and organize alliance to preserve special collections; 2. Promote special collections, and highlight the importance to increase the sense of identity of people related with school. 3. Promote and value the notions of preservation and preventive conservation.

University libraries play an important role in universities not only in terms of information resources and services but facilitation and support on research. Therefore, the operational performance becomes an essential consideration in university libraries. However, lacking standardized and universal guidelines make the practical implementation of performance evaluation hard to achieve. This study aims to analyze and develop a set of feasible and suitable performance indicators for university libraries in Taiwan. The study was comprised of two stages: the indicator construction stage included primary literature review based on the existing library performance standard ISO 11620 and related research. The process of exploring the indicators of the performance measurement for university libraries was designed by Delphi method. The Delphi panel was composed of 21 professional library administers. The study was ended by all the participants reaching consensus and stability towards applicable performance indicators through three rounds of questionnaire survey. The research results were showed as follows. First, tools and models of performance measurement vary in different university libraries due to various purposes and needs. Second, accomplishing overall operational performance measurement still has its difficulties and limitations. Third, four referable dimensions of performance measurement are “Resources & Infrastructure,” “Use,” “Efficiency,” and “Potentials & Development.” Ultimately, the study concludes 27 key performance indicators. Suggestions are provided for practical applications and future research. The study provides an applicable set of performance indicators, and it is expected to be a significant reference for university libraries.
