PurposeThe purpose of this case study is to demonstrate a current model, as well as explore future models, for integrating institutional repositories (IRs) in higher education goals at the University of Toledo. Design/methodology/approachThis is a case study that uses literature review as an exploratory framework for new approaches while reflecting on existing literature to present the current practical framework for using IRs. FindingsThe digital environment has pushed academic institutions toward new strategies for curating their record on scholarship and preserving their heritage collections, using their IRs. Innovative approaches are also vital to curating the IR content digitally to facilitate access to those contents in ways that was not possible a few decades ago. Surveys and existing literature point to increasing uses of IRs despite abstinence from considering open access for scholarly activity among faculty concerned about copyright, plagiarism and sustainability. Staffing and funding IR initiatives are important factors in sustaining the curation of scholarship in the digital environment. Practical implicationsIRs with open access publishing, expert gallery and digital library features place academic libraries in a central role as partners in digital scholarship. Originality/valueThis case study presents an original approach to incorporating the IR into the curation of digital content while also considering potential uses of knowledge management approaches for data and knowledge sharing in an academic environment.

RESUMENEl año 2021 se ha cumplido el VIII centenario del nacimiento del rey Alfonso X, acontecimiento que tuvo lugar en la ciudad de Toledo el 23 de noviembre de 1221. Nos encontramos ante la figura de uno de los reyes medievales hispanos de mayor relevancia, tanto por las ideas políticas innovadoras que intentó aplicar, aunque no lo consiguió, como, sobre todo, por la gran actividad intelectual que bajo su patronazgo se llevó entonces a cabo y que le ha merecido el apelativo de Sabio como es conocido. Son muchos los historiadores que, desde distintas ópticas (el Arte, el Derecho, la Astronomía, la Música, la Literatura, etcétera) se han acercado a su figura, lo que ha repercutido en que contemos con una bibliografía muy numerosa y de una gran variedad temática. We are faced with the figure of one of the most important Hispanic medieval kings both for the innovative political ideas that he tried to apply, although he did not succeed, as, above all, because of the great intellectual activity that took place under his patronage then and that has earned him the nickname of Wise as he is known. There are many historians who, from different perspectives (Art, Law, Astronomy, Music, Literature, etc.) have approached his figure, which has resulted in our having a very numerous bibliography and a great thematic variety. The manuscript 21-7 of the Cathedral Library of Toledo contains a medieval translation of the Arbor apostolicalis, part of the Arbor scientiae, of Ramon Lull, together with a preface addressed from a anonymous lulist to the archbishop of Toledo, probably Alfonso Carrillo. The article investigates the manuscript, ignored from the historians of the lulisme, and presents an edition of the preface.

Abstract: The University of Alcalá de Henares. In terms of origin it was the fourth to be created in Spain after the short-lived University of Palencia (1212), the University of Salamanca (1218) and the University of Valladolid (1241). The University of Alcalá de Henares with its General or Advanced Studies was founded on 20 May 1293 by the Archbishop of Toledo, Gonzalo Pérez Gudiel, and King Sancho IV by royal privilege. Streptococcus pneumonia is a gram-positive bacteria most commonly associated with respiratory tract infections such as acute otitis media, sinusitis, and pneumonia. While a common cause of upper respiratory infections, the current Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guidelines on Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) do not cite S. pneumoniae as a cause for UTIs in children. In addition, previous research associating S. pneumonia with UTIs has been scarce. We report the case of a three-year-old girl presenting to the emergency room with abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. Her clinical picture was consistent with right sided pyelonephritis. A urine analysis (UA) was conducted which showed trace leukocyte esterase, 150mg/dL ketones, 21-50 WBCs, and negative nitrites. A blood culture returned positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae along with right kidney hydronephrosis on ultrasound. This patient presented with a full clinical picture of pyelonephritis, fever, leukocytosis, elevated CRP and Procalcitonin levels, and later found to be S. pneumoniae positive. Although the urine culture did not grow any definitive single bacteria as a causative agent, due to the presentation of pyelonephritis along with CVA tenderness, dysuria, and a positive blood culture, we conclude the patient was exhibiting urosepsis due to S. pneumoniae. Upon discovering previous case reports noting S. pneumoniae as a possible agent for UTIs, we believed this bacterium to be contributing to the patient’s symptoms. While S. pneumoniae has only been a rarely reported cause of UTIs, we believe there is sufficient evidence that demonstrates S. pneumoniae to at least be considered a possible contributing cause of UTIs, especially if the patient has a coinciding septic picture. The use of spatial analysis tools is on the rise in many academic fields and practical applications. These tools enhance the ability to examine data from spatial perspectives. Though the study of place and space has traditionally been the domain of the field of geography, growing numbers of researchers are turning to these tools in the social sciences and beyond. The University of Toledo has established a unique Ph.D. granting program to encompass the theories, tools, and applications of spatially integrated social science. In the first couple of years of its inception the program has attracted students from different places and diverse backgrounds. It is expected that the program will continue to thrive in attracting diverse students, securing external grants, and positively impacting on the economy of Northwest Ohio. This paper is a personal reflection of the views of the authors on the Ph.D. program in Spatially Integrated Social Science at the University of Toledo two years after its inception in fall 2009. The views, by no means, are of the University of Toledo, its SISS program, or any of the participating departments and faculty members.

Robert Capa y Gerda Taro llegaron a España en agosto de 1936 cargados con sus cámaras fotográficas para cubrir la Guerra Civil. En pocas semanas, la pareja realizó un viaje por todo el territorio leal en busca de impactantes fotografías y victorias republicanas. Su estancia en Toledo es de las menos conocidas. En la ciudad, el coronel Moscardó, junto con un grupo de cadetes y guardias civiles que habían apoyado la sublevación militar, resistía en el interior del Alcázar desde el 22 de julio. En los archivos de la Agencia Magnum y el International Center of Photography se conservan varias fotografías erróneamente catalogadas, en cuanto a fecha y localización, realizadas por Capa y Taro durante su estancia en Toledo. Es objeto de estudio el análisis de las fotografías identificadas en Toledo, sobre las que apena se ha investigado. Como resultado se aportan datos que permiten reconocer espacios y acotar fechas. Entre las imágenes consultadas podemos hacer una distinción entre el primer viaje de los reporteros a finales de agosto y el segundo viaje el 18 de septiembre, incluyendo una diferenciación en los formatos de la película utilizada por Capa y Taro. Por último, se valora el papel de la alemana, quien se inició como fotoperiodista en esta etapa y que fue olvidada tras haber sido principal protagonista en la vida y la trayectoria de Robert Capa.

Abstract A slender folder at the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid contains parts of a story about how John Bale’s Illustrium majoris Britanniae scriptorum … summarium (1548) ended up in sixteenth century Spain. Inquisition documents from 1583 reveal how the book got to Toledo from Lyon and how the Holy Office came to know about it. By briefly telling this story, this short note hopes to pique interest in the documents and to suggest ways in which the archives in which they reside can support further research on censorship and the early-modern book trade.

El documento que presentamos aquí contiene el testimonio de una de las cofradías eucarísticas más antiguas en la historia moderna de la Iglesia. Su ubicación actual es la Hougthon Library de la Universidad de Harvard a donde llegó procedente de Toledo. Fue mandado redactar por doña Teresa Enríquez −Señora de Torrijos−, en 1502, para la Capilla de San Pedro en la Catedral Primada de Santa María de Toledo en España. La importancia del documento radica en que se convertirá en el modelo para la Compagnia o Confraternità del SS. Sacramento e delle cinque piaghe de la Basílica de San Lorenzo in Damaso en Roma, en 1506. Desde esta archicofradía romana y desde la cofradía que la propia Enríquez fundará en Torrijos, también en 1508, se difundió el culto eucarístico por toda la cristiandad hasta el día de hoy.

Abstract MS Tunis, Dār al-kutub al-waṭaniyya, 7116, is the only extant manuscript containing a complete copy of the Isḥāq/Ṯābit version of the Almagest. Paul Kunitzsch has underlined the close similarities between the marginal notes in the Tunis manuscript and those in Gerard of Cremona’s Latin translation of the Almagest, so that Kunitzsch has concluded that Gerard of Cremona had a manuscript close to the Tunis manuscript before him during the revision of his translation of the Almagest. A note in MS Tunis, Dār al-kutub al-waṭaniyya, 7116, points out that this manuscript was copied from a model owned by al-Arawšī, a bibliophile living in Valencia famous for the size of his library, a significant part of which was looted by al-Maʾmūn b. Ḏī l-Nūn and sent to Toledo, arguably shortly before Ṣāʿid al-Andalusī wrote his Ṭabaqāt al-umam. Based on MS Tunis, Dār al-kutub al-waṭaniyya, 7116, the present contribution explores the significance of al-Arawšī’s looted library as an important link between Umayyad Cordoba and Toledo. It also calls attention to the highly unusual paper of MS Tunis, Dār al-kutub al-waṭaniyya, 7116, made of woven fibers, maybe flax.

<p>Archaeological researches developed by the University of Alcalá de Henares in Huecas (Toledo) have provided interesting conclusions about the population sequence and socioeconomic transformations in the inner zone of Iberian Peninsula during Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Burial mounds, artificial caves and spectaculars archaeological materials have been recupered in succesive seasons of excavation. The construction of a collector and a puryfing plant for the village of Huecas allowed the intensification of the investigations and the drawing of several pictures to present some relevant archaeological data. This paper shows the 3D interpretation of some archaeological data from Huecas.</p>

Abstract: The main issue of this article will revolve around the School of Translators of Toledo, one of the first European institutions carrying out translations that could be considered as translations within the Public Services and examples of Community Translation. The main objectives of this project will be to highlight the institution, as well as to carry out an inner investigation for trying to demonstrate the identity of one of the School’s most relevant translators: Gundisalvo’s main contributor, analyzing documents found in the current School’s Library and in the Cathedral Archive of Toledo. Firstly, there will be a brief analysis about the historical development of theSchool ofTranslators. Secondly, the research part about the identity of Gundisalvo’s contributor will be developed and explained, as well as the methodology used for the research and the conclusions obtained. Finally, general conclusions about the whole project will be exposed too.Resumen: El tema principal de este artículo girará en torno a la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo, una de las primeras instituciones europeas en realizar traducciones que podrían ser consideradas como traducciones de de los Servicios Públicos y ejemplos de Traducción Comunitaria. Los principales objetivos de este proyecto serán el de resaltar la figura de la institución, así como llevar a cabo una investigación interna para tratar de demostrar la identidad de uno de los traductores más relevantes de la Escuela: el colaborador principal de Gundisalvo, analizando los documentos encontrados en la actual biblioteca de la Escuela y en el Archivo Catedralicio de Toledo. En primer lugar, se realizará un breve análisis sobre el desarrollo histórico de la Escuela de Traductores. En segundo lugar, se llevará a cabo una investigación sobre la identidad del colaborador de Gundisalvo, así como la metodología utilizada y las conclusiones obtenidas. Por último, se expondrán también las conclusiones generales sobre el proyecto completo.

This communication aims to review, thirty years after its discovery, the elements related to magic contained in the manuscripts found in Ocaña (Toledo) in 1969, and especially to highlight the research in this field carried out over these years by two professors from the University of Granada: Juan Martínez Ruiz and Joaquina Aisarracín Navarro.

Abstract This article presents the Responsio in quaestione de muliere sarracena transeunte ad statum et ritum iudaicum (1451) by Alonso Fernández de Madrigal, “El Tostado” (1410–55), as a rich source for the study of conversion across minority groups. A trial conducted before the archbishop of Toledo concerning a Muslim woman turned Jew by her lover in Talavera de la Reina (Spain) caused a scandal in Christian society. As one of the most outstanding legal scholars at the University of Salamanca, Madrigal established the right of the archbishop of Toledo to judge an issue involving the two minorities and decided in favor of the woman returning to her faith of origin, instead of imposing the death penalty. While conversion superseded issues of illicit sexual relations, gender acted as a mitigating circumstance. This article will also consider how the three communities contributed to the survival of “cohabitation,” defined by Madrigal as social peace, and the preservation of the status of the different religions living together in Castile.

This technical note describes initial efforts of the University of Toledo Accelerated Radical Innovation (ARI) research team in beginning to develop a comprehensive classification system, describing all dimensions, types, and activity levels of innovation. It does not purport to provide a finalized system, but rather is meant to spark discussion, and motivate additional development and research efforts leading toward a complete comprehensive and understandable system for classifying innovation.

As medical education has become something of a buyer's market, a Midwest medical school and a Texas university are resorting to advertising for students. The Medical College of Ohio in Toledo has taken out ads in 23 Ohio college newspapers urging premed students to consider applying. Meanwhile, the University of Texas System, in a broader appeal, is running TV ads urging young Texans to choose health careers. University of Texas officials hope their ad campaign will help stem a decline in enrollments in the state's medical and related schools, the same trend observed nationally for the past 15 years. Medical-school enrollments declined 37% nationwide between 1974 and 1988, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.
