This article outlines one way in which less research-intensive universities can contribute to entrepreneurship by examining the achievements of several Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) in the University of Gloucestershire. The article adopts a qualitative case study approach: four case studies of KTPs at, respectively, Beacons Business Interiors, Dowty Propellers, Energist UK and Muddy Boots Software (all of which have operating bases within 40 miles of the University) are researched and analysed. The findings reveal that these four KTPs delivered various benefits for the companies, the University and the staff directly involved in the projects, and more generally that the KTPs successfully met their initial aims. The authors identify a number of challenges involved in maximizinig the benefits of KTP activity in the University and suggest how KTPs can actively foster the development of an entrepreneurial university. This article is an accessible review of KTP initiatives in the University of Gloucestershire and as such will interest academics and business practitioners who are looking to develop university–industry partnerships. It also offers reflections on how a programme of KTPs can advance entrepreneurial development and support Growth Hub initiatives.

In this paper we argue that the topic area of Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology is a well crafted one, in that historical analysis is an invaluable tool in teaching the conceptual issues that must be appreciated to gain a full understanding of psychology. Using selected teaching examples we discuss how the history of psychology can illuminate and inform an understanding of not only specific issues and debates in psychology, but also the nature of psychology as a reflexive, socially embedded discipline. We then go on to present a case study of a recent curriculum re-design at the University of Gloucestershire that put Conceptual and Historical Issues at the core of first-year teaching, with the intention that the insights gained will provide a firm foundation for understanding the remainder of the syllabus. Early indications are that introducing students to this perspective while they are new to university study encourages them to see it as a form of thinking differently that is inherent to Higher, versus Further, Education; whereas previous practice of covering it in a final-year capstone module resulted in some students treating it as a marginal topic.

Abstract Many companies, businesses, and entrepreneurs are starting to care about environmental issues and implement sustainable strategies within their companies. Research on sustainability strategy continues to develop but is limited to one country and one field. From the bibliometric perspective, this study purposes to visually research mapping and trends in sustainability strategy on an international scale. This study used bibliometric techniques with secondary data from Scopus. Analyze and visualize data using the VOSViewer program and Scopus’s analyze search results function. This study analyzed 1,184 scientific documents published between 1988 and 2020. According to the research, the University of Gloucestershire and Peter Jones had the most active affiliated institutions and individual scientists in sustainability strategy publication. Environmental Science; and Journal of Cleaner Production were the most studied and disseminated outlets of sustainability strategy publication. There were three category maps of collaborative researchers from around the world. Based on identifying a collection of knowledge accumulated from over thirty-two years of publication, this research proposes a grouping of sustainability strategy publication themes: strategic management, economics, environmental management, research, and sustainability, as SEERS publication themes.

Purpose – This paper outlines the aims, activities and outcomes of a project to pilot a reciprocal borrowing scheme between public and academic libraries using existing cards, i.e. public library cards in the academic library and university ID cards in the public libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This is a case study providing practical information about the establishment and promotion of the service, and recounting the feedback from surveys of participants, prospective users and library staff. Findings – The project outcomes indicate that the reciprocal use of existing library cards between institutions and public libraries in a geographical area: was relatively simple once set up; was appreciated by all those who participated; had few teething problems; had had no appreciable impact on the availability of academic stock to University of the West of England (UWE) students; increased public library and academic library usage by target groups, e.g. school students 16 years and over, enabled the public library service to provide a significantly better offer of resources to its community, especially those who needed access to specialised stock, not normally available in a general public library service. Originality/value – The partnership between LibrariesWest (led by South Gloucestershire Libraries) and UWE Bristol Library Services is not unusual. However, the approach taken, i.e. to allow borrowers to use their own libraries’ cards without any data sharing between the respective systems, is fairly unique. The processes involved and the evaluation of the scheme are of value to other prospective partnerships where organisations are geographically aligned.

Old herbarium specimens have become increasingly well-recognised as a rich source of ecological baseline data. For long-continuity plant communities, such as ancient woodland, these records may be particularly important for present day ecological management. To evaluate this potential, searches for pre-1950 Ancient Woodland Indicator (AWI) herbarium specimens collected in East Gloucestershire, UK, were conducted using digital open access sources and the physical Royal Agricultural University herbarium. In total 305 specimens were retrieved from twelve herbaria, with small regional collections being particularly important sources. The earliest specimen dated to 1834. There was a significant association between old specimen availability and year of collection, due to a peak in the late-1800s and early-1900s. Over half of the AWI species for the region were represented, although some taxonomic bias was evident. To determine if old AWI specimens contributed any new location records, 246 unique specimens with detailed georeferences were mapped and compared to the locations of 1950-1999 and 2000-2021 biological records. One third of the pre-1950 specimens had not been recorded in the same locality since collection of the old specimen, indicating either a gap in recent records or floristic change. However, length of time since specimen collection was not a predictor of a 1950-2000 or 2000-2021 record in the same locality. Overall, it is highly recommended that policy-makers, land managers, and field surveyors consult old AWI herbarium records for ancient woodland identification, management, and restoration.

If, as it has sometimes been argued, changes in contract rules and theory are strongly affected by changes in economic conditions, we should note that the world has changed a good deal since the early 1960s when relational contract theory began to bloom. The economic world of 2004 is very different from the world of 1964. Modern relational contract theory was born about the same time as its great theoretical competitor, the rational choice approach of the legal economists. It came before the vast changes wrought by the information revolution and the increased globalization of the economy. What has relational theory taught us over the past forty years? How has it changed and adapted in light of those great economic changes? Where is it going in the future? Those were the general topics at a panel discussion which took place June 8, 2004, at the Oxstalls campus of the University of Gloucestershire in Gloucester, England. It was part of a conference entitled, "The Common Law of Contracts as a World Force in Two Ages of Revolution," which marked the 150th anniversary of one of the most famous contracts cases of all time, Hadley v. Baxendale, and is the theme of the present Symposium. The Conference's object was to explore how the common law adapts to and influences the kind of revolutionary changes that have swept over our society in the past forty years, and which swept over England in the forty years before Hadley v. Baxendale.

The study purpose was to look into the production of scientific publications on the Philosophy of Sports and Physical Education. Materials and methods. Scopus and Web of Science databases and various bibliometric indicators such as global publication trends, most active authors, number of citations, and author keywords were used to collect publications. Results. A total of 1103 publications on the philosophy of sport and physical education were found from 1981 to 2021. This review used data in comma-separated values (CSV) format for Scopus, which was then exported to Microsoft Excel and text documents in WoS format, as well as ScientoPy software. The research findings provide information that, from 1981 to 2021, publications experienced a fluctuating trend in quantity. Starting in 2016, publications have reached double digits, with the number of publications reaching 71 documents. The United States is listed as the most productive country with a number of published documents as high as 226 academic scientific works. Ryall, E., University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, became the most prolific author with a total of 33 publications. The Department of Philosophy in the United States is at the forefront of publications with 39 documents. Conclusions. A number of limitations in this study are unavoidable. First, the research method used by researchers is not completely perfect, including how to find documents, categorize documents, and document provider databases, which cannot be ignored. Researchers believe that this scientometric research provides important information about future research directions in the philosophy of sport and physical education.

Javanese dance artist Suprapto Suryodarmo (Prapto) led a keynote workshop as part of the Dance and Somatic Practices Conference 2017 at Coventry University. This workshop took a ‘wave’ format that involved different groups of participants flowing in and out of the durational workshop over three hours. The ‘somatic music’ created by Tim Jones and Adrian Lee accompanied and supported this flow, bringing the Amerta Movement practice into conversation with musical improvisation. The musicians later played with Prapto and presented their own ‘gig’ as part of the ‘Amerta Movement in Performance’ events in July 2018 and 2019 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK.1 After the Stroud workshop in 2019, Prapto asked researcher Emma Meehan to write to the musicians to discuss their exploration of ‘somatic music’. The following set of e-mail exchanges over the past year share excerpts of this ongoing dialogue instigated by Prapto. Following Prapto’s death in December 2019, we gathered our conversations here to pay tribute to his work and celebrate his inspiration to artists experimenting in Amerta Movement in performance. Alongside these conversations, we invite readers to listen to audio recordings of somatic music with Tim Jones, Adrian Lee and Prapto. Rather than presenting a definition of what somatic music is, we want to share perspectives on somatic music as an ongoing dialogue that will continue as part of Prapto’s legacy in years to come. A title for these exchanges suggested itself from Prapto’s comment (2018, 151–152) ‘the idea for receiving the idea, that is the seed’, to acknowledge his seeding of this conversation into existence.

IntroductionSARS-CoV-2 has restricted access to face-to-face delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). Evidence suggests that telehealth-PR is non-inferior to outpatient PR. However, it is unknown whether patients who have been referred to face-to-face programmes can feasibly complete an online-PR programme.MethodsThis service evaluation used a mixed-methods approach to investigate a rapid PR service remodelling using the University of Gloucestershire eLearn Moodle platform. Quantitative baseline demographic and PR outcome data were collected from online-PR participants, and semistructured interviews were completed with PR staff and participants.ResultsTwenty-five individuals were eligible from a PR waiting list. Thirteen declined participation and 14 completed PR. Significant pre-post online PR improvements were achieved in 1 min sit-to-stand (CI 2.1 to 9 (p=0.004)), Generalised Anxiety Disorder (CI −0.3 to −2.6 (p=0.023)), Primary Health Questionnaire-9 (CI −0.3 to −5.1 (p=0.029)), Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire dyspnoea (CI 0.5 to 1.3 (p=0.001)), fatigue (CI 0.7 to 2 (p=0.0004)), emotion (CI 0.7 to 1.7 (p=0.0002)), mastery (CI 0.4 to 1.3 (p=0.001)). Interviews indicated that patient PR inclusion was made possible with digital support and a PR introduction session improved participant engagement and safety. Incremental progression of exercise was perceived as more successful online compared with face-to-face PR. However, perceptions were that education sessions were less successful. Online-PR required significant staff time resource.DiscussionOnline-PR improves patient outcomes and is feasible and acceptable for individuals referred for face-to-face PR in the context of a requirement for social distancing. Face-to-face programmes can be adapted in a rapid fashion with both staff and participants perceiving benefit. Future pragmatic trials are now warranted comparing online-PR including remote assessments to centre-based PR with suitably matched outcomes, and patient and staff perceptions sought regarding barriers and facilitators of online delivery.

IntroductionThe human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, administered in early adolescence, can substantially reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality. However, lack of written parental consent is a key reason why some young women do not receive the vaccine. The national legal framework allows girls to be vaccinated without parental consent provided they are deemed Gillick competent, but there is some reticence about vaccinating without written parental consent. Self-consent procedures are being implemented in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. This study will examine the implementation, acceptability and impact of these new procedures. Methods and analysisStatistical analyses of routine data from Public Health England and the Child Health Information System will test if there has been an increase in HPV vaccination uptake in two ways: (a) Is there an increase when comparing before and after the change in our intervention sites? and (b) Does the percentage change in our intervention sites differ from comparison sites (similar to our intervention sites in terms of initial HPV uptake, ethnicity and deprivation levels) in England where no such intervention took place and how? For the process evaluation, we will develop a logic model and use questionnaires, observations and audio-recorded interviews with young women, school nurses, school staff and parents to examine the context, implementation of self-consent and response to the new procedures.Ethics and disseminationThe University of Bristol Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee and the National Health Service Health Research Authority provided approvals for the study. We will produce a report with recommendations about self-consent procedures in conjunction with key stakeholders. At least two papers will be written for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for conference presentations. A summary of results will be shared with participating immunisation nurses, school staff, young people and parents as requested.Trial registration numberISRCTN49086105; Pre-results.

Abstract With over seventy percent of millennials preferring to spend disposable income on experiences rather than consumer goods, organizations operating in the tourism, hospitality, and events sectors are predicted to see increasing demand. Despite being recognized as a major contributor to economic activity, these sectors have been criticized for being a root cause of environmental degradation, acculturation, economic leakage, and migration. The recent collapse of international travel firms with far-reaching consequences for employees, suppliers, and destinations has highlighted the vulnerability of organizations to volatility in the business environment and calls for a reassessment of business and leadership models. Since the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, sustainability initiatives are becoming more embedded into corporate strategies with an increasing focus on the triple bottom line. Following the creation of the Global Reporting Initiative Standards and sector-specific standards, there is a growing expectation that organizations demonstrate accountability for their sustainability initiatives. In Western societies, this reflects a shift away from the liberalist notion of the “Theory of the Firm” towards the sustainability paradigm. The purpose of this exploratory paper is to propose a preliminary framework for embedding innovative sustainability education in undergraduate degree programs. The paper first reviews UK-based guidelines for sustainability education at the university level. It then proposes a framework for the development of a corresponding curriculum audit tool that assesses how comprehensively sustainability education is embedded into undergraduate curricula. The University of Gloucestershire’s degree programs in International Hospitality and Tourism Management and Event Management are used as case studies to demonstrate how an audit tool design based on relevant principles can be used in practice for assessing and enhancing sustainability education. The paper recommends the further development of the tool into a best practice model integrating graduate attributes, key learning outcomes and skills, and an appropriate learning and teaching infrastructure. Transferability across subjects and transnationally is identified as an area for further research.

Abstract Aim The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Diversity Review 2021 found pre-medical school students from ethnic minority backgrounds were dissuaded from pursuing a career in surgery. Gloucestershire is in the bottom 20% of deprivation; with no widening participation (WP) scheme in the county. We implemented an inclusive WP scheme in Gloucester, with means of accessing virtual and face-to-face work-experience, to enhance the equity of work-experience. Method A three-stage project was conducted; 1; virtual Q&A sessions, asking questions about life as a doctor; 2; conversation between the student and patient held virtually, to gain insight into whether medicine is the right career; 3; face-to-face work-experience. Distribution sent to all 58 schools in the county. Results 129 people attended the Q&A; 70 feedback responses received. 86% female, 56% of ethnic minority background. 26% did not have an immediate family member that attended university, 10% had caring responsibilities. 81% rated the session >8/10 for usefulness. 27 undertook the virtual conversation, feedback from 11; 91% female, 45% of ethnic minority background, 27% did not have an immediate family member that attended university. All rated the session 10/10 for usefulness. Conclusions The RCS Report identified barriers with aspiring students from less-privileged backgrounds pursuing a career in surgery. More needs to be done with WP schemes to promote equity. Targeted distribution of WP schemes to all schools, utilisation of a means of offering work-experience, and accessibility to a younger age-group were aspects of our WP, to improve the equity of work-experience in the county.

OBJECTIVES The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Diversity Review 2021 found that premedical school students from ethnic minority backgrounds were dissuaded from pursuing a surgical career. Gloucestershire is in the bottom 20% of disadvantaged counties; there is no widening participation (WP) scheme in the county. We implemented a fully inclusive WP scheme in Gloucester, with means of accessing virtual and face-to-face work experience, to enhance the equity of work experience. METHODS A three-stage project was conducted. Stage 1; two separate virtual Q and A sessions, to allow students to ask questions about life as a doctor. Stage 2; conversation between student and patient held virtually, to gain insight into working as a doctor to help determine whether medicine is the career for them. Stage 3; face-to-face work experience. Distribution sent to all 58 schools (state and private) in the county, targeted at secondary school children. RESULTS One hundred twenty-nine people attended the Q and A; 70 feedback responses received. Of the total, 86% female and 56% of ethnic minority background. 26% did not have an immediate family member that attended university, 10% had care-giving responsibilities. Eighty-one percent rated the session >8/10 for usefulness. Twenty-seven undertook the virtual conversation, feedback from 11; 91% female, 45% of ethnic minority background, and 27% did not have an immediate family member that attended university. All rated the session 10/10 for usefulness. 10 attended the face-to-face experience, 50% from an ethnic minority background. CONCLUSION The RCS Report identified barriers to aspiring students from less-privileged backgrounds pursuing a medical career. More needs to be done with WP schemes to promote equity. Targeted distribution of WP schemes to all schools, utilization of a variety of means of offering work experience, and accessibility to any school-aged student were aspects of our WP to improve exposure to the medical profession.

The aim of this study was to report the learning style preferences of final year Sports Therapy students within the context of clinical education, with a further specific focus on differences between male and female learning styles. A total of n = 32 BSc. (Hons) Sports Therapy degree students ( x̄ ± s; age = 21.8 ± 4.8 years, male:female = 14:18) were recruited from the University of Gloucestershire whilst completing a 24 week clinical practice module. Data collection involved the Kolb learning style inventory (version 3.1) being administered to all participants with reference to their clinical practice experience. Data analysis, involving mean scores for these learning style orientations, were then used to determine the group preference for abstractness over concreteness (AC-CE) and action over reflection (AE-RO). Group analysis revealed a preference for the converging learning style (AC-CE = 5.3, AE-RO = 5.2) and was in contrast to the favoured individual learning styles of Accommodator (34%) and Diverger (31%). These individual findings are consistent with Kolb & Kolb’s (2005) belief that individuals involved in human-related professions are person orientated and likely to adopt concrete learning styles. Gender comparison revealed a statistically significant difference between the AC-CE scores (P = 0.03), possibly leading to the assumption that male Sports Therapy students have a predilection for more abstract modes of experiential learning (8.6), whereas females have a slight preference for more concrete means (2.7), suggesting a more balanced learning style. The findings of this study indicate that learning activities could be tailored in order to optimise potential learning within a clinical Sports Therapy context.

PrologueGlaucoma surgery has been, for many decades now, dominated by the universal gold standard which is trabeculectomy augmented with antimetabolites. Tubes also came into the scene to complement what we use to call conventional or traditional glaucoma surgery. More recently we experienced a changing glaucoma surgery environment with the “advent” of what we have become used to calling Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). What is the unmet need, what is the gap that these newcomers aim to fill?Hippocrates taught us “bring benefit, not harm” and new glaucoma techniques and devices aim to provide safer surgery compared to conventional surgery. For the patient, but also for the clinician, safety is important. Is more safety achieved with new glaucoma surgery and, if so, is it associated with better, equivalent, or worse efficacy? Is new glaucoma surgery intended to replace conventional surgery or to complement it as an ‘add-on’ to what clinicians already have in their hands to manage glaucoma? Which surgery should be chosen for which patient? What are the options? Are they equivalent? These are too many questions for the clinician! What are the answers to the questions? What is the evidence to support answers? Do we need more evidence and how can we produce high-quality evidence? This EGS Guide explores the changing and challenging glaucoma surgery environment aiming to provide answers to these questions. The EGS uses four words to highlight a continuum: Innovation, Education, Communication, and Implementation. Translating innovation to successful implementation is crucially important and requires high-quality evidence to ensure steps forward to a positive impact on health care when it comes to implementation. The vision of EGS is to provide the best possible well-being and minimal glaucomainduced visual disability in individuals with glaucoma within an affordable healthcare system. In this regard, assessing the changes in glaucoma surgery is a pivotal contribution to better care. As mentioned, this Guide aims to provide answers to the crucial questions above. However, every clinician is aware that answers may differ for every person: an individualised approach is needed. Therefore, there will be no uniform answer for all situations and all patients. Clinicians would need, through the clinical method and possibly some algorithm, to reach answers and decisions at the individual level. In this regard, evidence is needed to support clinicians to make decisions. Of key importance in this Guide is to provide an overview of existing evidence on glaucoma surgery and specifically on recent innovations and novel devices, but also to set standards in surgical design and reporting for future studies on glaucoma surgical innovation. Designing studies in surgery is particularly challenging because of many subtle variations inherent to surgery and hence multiple factors involved in the outcome, but even more because one needs to define carefully outcomes relevant to the research question but also to the future translation into clinical practice. In addition this Guide aims to provide clinical recommendations on novel procedures already in use when insufficient evidence exists.EGS has a long tradition to provide guidance to the ophthalmic community in Europe and worldwide through the EGS Guidelines (now in their 5th Edition). The EGS leadership recognized that the changing environment in glaucoma surgery currently represents a major challenge for the clinician, needing specific guidance. Therefore, the decision was made to issue this Guide on Glaucoma Surgery in order to help clinicians to make appropriate decisions for their patients and also to provide the framework and guidance for researchers to improve the quality of evidence in future studies. Ultimately this Guide will support better Glaucoma Care in accordance with EGS’s Vision and Mission.Fotis TopouzisEGS PresidentContributorsAll contributors have provided the appropriate COI visible in detail atwww.eugs.org/pages/guidesurgical/This manuscript reflects the work and thoughts of the list of individuals recognized above, but importantly, it reflects EGS views on the subject matter. Its strength originates from a team effort, where a cohesive group of authors and reviewers have worked towards a common goal and now stand behind the text in its entirety. The EGS nevertheless wishes to thank the following external contributors for their additional expertise, which was particularly valuable to the development of this Surgical Guide: Amanda Bicket, Jonathan Bonnar, Catey Bunce, Kuan Hu, Sheffinea Koshy, Jimmy Le, Tianjing Li, Francisco Otarola, Riaz Qureshi, Anupa Shah, Richard Stead and Marta Toth.
