This qualitative research study explores the role of the sermon in corporate Nazarene worship. The context of this study is located with the Christian, Protestant, evangelical, Wesleyan theological tradition as expressed through the Church of the Nazarene in Australia. The church is briefly described from a Wesleyan perspective. Seven features are identified as historically important within the worship experience of Nazarenes; Biblically centred, centrality of the sermon, connection with Christian tradition, the preacher's life, encounter with self and the divine, community, and practical and relevant to present life. The conceptual lens through which the worship experiences are described is Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), as primarily articulated by Yrjö Engeström (1999). The philosophical roots of CHAT and the concept of activity are described along with the structure of activity. Additionally, the compatibility of Wesleyan theology with the conceptual understanding of CHAT is presented. The interactive context of Nazarene worship is one of the compelling reasons given for using CHAT as the conceptual base for this study. Three corporate Nazarene worship experiences in three different Nazarene congregations are examined in detail using four research methodologies; namely, video taping, video stimulated recall interviews, focus groups, and observation reports. The data gathered is by way of transcriptions based on the video taping of the sermons, stimulated recall interviews and focus groups and is managed by use of the NUD*IST (5) computer program. The observation reports are used to gain insight into specific context issues. Nazarene worship is then mapped by relating the features found to be historically important in Nazarene worship to elements of the activity system. The role of the Bible, the sermon, Christian tradition, the preacher's life, the church community, personal encounter, divine encounter, and the application and the call to decision are identified in CHAT terms. The focus of this study is within Steps 1 and 2 of Engeström's (2000) expansive development cycle. Through the mapping of Nazarene worship, tensions are identified and their possible sources explored. The tensions of confrontation versus care, creation of a quiet, meditative environment versus noisy, dynamic environment, planning versus spontaneity, and individual versus community orientation are all explored in turn. Possibilities for resolution of these tensions are suggested as a means of guiding the continued development of the activity of Nazarene worship. Possible resolution of these tensions includes the change of the focus of sermons from confrontation to empowerment, the change of the structure of sermons to encompass the visualisation of the change sought, the change of the perceptions of the preacher to one of a sojourner, and the cultivation of spontaneity within sermon delivery. The static nature of the sermon as an instrument in both the sermon's historical development and the development of the corporate worship experience points to the need for the development of the sermon as a more flexible instrument. These conclusions have implications for the teaching of preaching in schools preparing Nazarene preachers. This study contributes to the conceptual basis for the ongoing development of clergy in their preaching ministry. This study has also made visible the difficulty of applying the conceptual framework of CHAT to the complex situation of corporate Nazarene worship experience. While conceptually it may be possible to differentiate between elements within an activity system, their practical distinction is less precise. This imprecision can create confusion especially at the tertiary and quaternary levels of contradictions and may need more precise articulation of the interactions within the activity system as well as between activity systems.

Church planting is increasingly pursued by denominations as a very effective means of church growth. Because church planting is an expensive undertaking with considerable downsides to failure, organizations seek to use the best candidate assessment processes possible. Discussion is ongoing concerning the specific value of previous pastoral experience as an indicator of the potential for a future church planter's success. This doctoral project utilized a survey instrument to track the comparative success rate of church planters with and without previous pastoral experience in the Church of the Nazarene and The Wesleyan Church. The survey also examined the attitudes of current church planters toward the value of experience within their present ministry. The results indicated a statistically insignificant advantage toward success if having previous pastoral experience. However, the project also revealed a high value placed on previous pastoral experience by church planters. The survey also discovered which skills planters found most valuable and transferable from established pastoral ministry to church planting. Apostolic skills were consistently desired over skills considered more pastoral in nature. The compilation of the research indicates that planter assessment centers should begin to consider the role of experience in addition to the discovery of planter capacities. Furthermore, denominations need to consider ways to come alongside planters to supplement any skills needed to succeed at the challenging work of church planting.

This study examined the authentic leadership of pastors in the Southwest Educational Region of the USA/Canada Church of the Nazarene to determine whether there is a positive correlation between authentic leadership and ministerial effectiveness. While authentic leadership is a theory with clear definition measured by multiple validated instruments, ministerial effectiveness is a concept that involves more ambiguity. For the purposes of this study, ministerial effectiveness was measured using the Ministerial Effectiveness Inventory. While this study was built on previous research that found a significant relationship between authentic leadership and ministerial effectiveness in pastors in the Indiana District of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (Puls, 2012), the study avoided the controversy created by retracted articles and limits to use caused by the proprietary nature of the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire by using the Authentic Leadership Inventory (ALI). The ALI has been shown reliably to measure the same construct as the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire without these limitations. The study found significant positive relationships in all three clusters of respondents—pastoral selfraters, follower other-raters, and sets with at least one follower other-rater—between ministerial effectiveness as measured by the Ministerial Effectiveness Inventory and authentic leadership as measured by the ALI. Additionally, the study found a significant positive relationship between ministerial effectiveness and all four components of authentic leadership as measured by the ALI: self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing, and transparency. As expected, female pastoral participation was low and thus limited the ability to find significant results specific to female pastors. The results of this study could contribute to church health by providing a resource to improve the ability of the Church of the Nazarene to prepare effective ministers, inform the personal development of active ministers, and guide the pastoral search process for churches seeking to call ministers who will effectively lead the ministries of a church to congregation and community.

A pesquisa estrutura-se para analisar os relatos de mudança religiosa produzidos pelos fiéis da Igreja do Nazareno em Ricardo de Albuquerque. Como os indivíduos articulam suas experiências, seus motivos e explicações, foram abordados para descrever o que a mudança religiosa provoca nos fiéis do ponto de vista da sua identidade. Verificou-se que a maior parte do trânsito de fiéis concentrou-se entre igrejas do segmento evangélico, ainda que a maioria tenha sido criada na Igreja Católica. Percebe-se, por um lado, que as escolhas dos fiéis orientam-se em reação ao desencantamento, à secularização das grandes religiões, em direção a um re-encantamento do mundo, numa sociedade que contribui cada vez menos com elementos de balizamento na construção das suas identidades. Por outro lado, o trânsito dentro do segmento evangélico evidencia processos subjetivos de construção de uma identidade evangélica abrangente, pela bricolagem de elementos de crença estranhos à teologia da Igreja estudada. Tal situação exemplifica o conceito de desregulação da religião, das dificuldades crescentes que as igrejas encontram no processo contínuo de definir seus próprios contornos, preceitos, práticas e limites.
This research is structured to analyse the reports of religious change produced by the members of the Nazarene Church in Ricardo de Albuquerque. How individuals articulate their experiences, their reasons and explanations, were addressed to describe what the religious change causes to the new members identity. It was found that most of the transit concentrated among evangelical churches, though most have been brought up as catholics. It is noticeable, on the one hand, that the choices of members reacts to the disenchantment, the secularization of the main religions, toward a re-enchantment of the world, in a society that contributes increasingly less with steady elements for the construction of their identities. On the other hand, the transit within the evangelical segment highlights subjective processes of construction of a broad evangelical identity by the bricolage of alien elements in relation to the Nazarene’s theology. This exemplifies the concept of deregulation of religion, the increasing difficulty that the churches face in the ongoing process of defining their own outlines, concepts, practices and limits.

De prime abord, il s’agit d’un fruit de travail de recherche qui s’efforce de comprendre, comment cette Église s’est implantée à Québec. Il s’agit également d’un travail qui essaye de saisir les croyances mais aussi le point nodal de l’enseignement qu’elle a véhiculé, dès la genèse de sa mission, en vue d’évangéliser ou réévangéliser, et, éventuellement, fonder une communauté nazaréenne des Québécois et Québécoises. Reconnaissant historiquement la résistance spécifique de Québec à l’endroit du protestantisme en général, et de l’Église du Nazaréen en particulier, ce travail tente d’évaluer les limites et fécondité nazaréennes, mais aussi la manière dont la mission a fini par être interrompue.

The purpose of this study was to identify the communicative practices of women senior/solo pastors in the Church of the Nazarene. Orbe's (1996, 1998a) Co-cultural theoretical framework was employed to analyze the data gathered from 10 semi-structured, in-depth interviews, which identified seven communication orientations that the women senior/solo pastors in the study employed to advance and work within the denomination. Specific communication practices in each orientation were identified and explained. Additionally, through a grounded theory approach this research added to the Co-culture theory by identifying a new censoring practice—humor--expanding the use of existing practices, and clarifying the definition— "intragroup" networking. Finally, the results, the implications, and future research were discussed.

This thesis brings together areas of research in the common theme of theological education for the ordained ministry. Its goal, through original critical analysis and original research, is to develop an "Oslo model" of theological education by distance learning for the ordained ministry of the Church of the Nazarene in the United Kingdom. This is done by drawing on the emerging competencies from the recent ecumenical Oslo debate on theological education together with the contemporary principles of distance learning. Its application is in the context of the Church of the Nazarene where theological education for the ordained ministry is a live issue. To develop the model, the argument moves through several stages in which original critical analysis and original research is done. Chapter one summarises the three year ecumenical Oslo debate in ministerial formation and theological education. Chapter two, describes the emerging "Oslo model" through the six competencies agreed at its final consultation held in 1996. The formation of the minister is seen as central to the theological education endeavour, therefore the competencies are primarily formative in being educative. Chapter three critically reflects on the context of the Oslo consultation in the knowledge that similar arguments for a new vision had already been rehearsed in the debate which led up to the formation of TEE a generation earlier. A critique of TEE is done through an examination of its philosophy and historical development. Chapter four analyses and critiques, through original documentation, a working model of TEE in its historical and philosophical context within the Church of the Nazarene. This throws more light on the reasons why Oslo may have been so reticent in its promotion of TEE. It also raises significant questions for the Church of the Nazarene of its use of the method. Chapter five considers the set of core competencies drawn up by the Church of the Nazarene for its theological education programme. Are these compatible with those from the Oslo consultation? It so, should they take precedence over the Nazarene competencies?

Formal job performance evaluation of a church's pastoral staff has been almost nonexistent in many churches. While business and education have been making strides in evaluation techniques during the past three decades, the church is just beginning to notice the need for this kind of accountability and ongoing professional development. In this research, the author applied the evaluation techniques of education to church pastoral staff members. Evaluation can be understood as both a formative process and a summative decision. The steps to planning an evaluation that will be both formative and summative are discussed. Qualifying the ministerial tasks through objective job descriptions will enable the church to quantify the job performance through evaluation. Suggestions are given for developing a ministerial evaluation instrument. In this research a model from educational evaluation was adapted for use in a local church setting. One denomination was selected to demonstrate the process of evaluation development. Denominational governments differ considerably. Therefore, the key stakeholders of the church for the chosen denomination were identified as pastors and church board members. These stakeholders were used as a "panel of experts." The Delphi technique was used to develop consensus from the participants concerning (1) the core skills of ministerial effectiveness and (2) the quality indicators to measure those core skills. This required two rounds, one for identifying the core skills and one for identifying quality indicators. Each round consisted of three surveys. The research identified seven core skills for ministerial effectiveness and a number of quality indicators to measure each core skill. The results were used to demonstrate how an evaluation tool could be developed from the data. This evaluation tool was the consensus of the panel of experts in this study. While the process is a model that could be similar for any church's "panel" of participants, the resulting core skills, quality indicators and evaluation tool would vary for each "panel".

The overall intent of the study was to understand the role of emotional intelligence in school leader preparation programs in the Nazarene university system. A qualitative exploration of the understanding and presence of emotional intelligence (EI) theory and associated concepts in two Nazarene university principal preparation programs was conducted along with an investigation of the need, hindrances, and solutions to including such topics in the universities' programs. Two educational leadership program directors from each university acted as participants by responding to semi structured interview questions about the topics.

The results revealed a perceived need for the inclusion of EI theory and associated concepts in the universities' principal preparation programs. Hindrances and possible solutions for including EI in the curriculum resulted in clear guidelines for incorporating the topics in the universities' courses of study. Implications for application of the results to other universities were discussed as well as the potential for development and implementation of training in EI for a broader set of educational leaders, including preservice and existing principals, teachers, education specialists, various levels of school leaders, and community partners in leadership roles affecting schools. Recommendations were made for further research extending the study of EI theory and associated concepts into universities outside the Nazarene university system as well as employing a quantitative approach to further investigate the ten themes which emerged regarding the relationship between EI and principal leadership. A comparison study using the same methods to explore the topic of servant leadership was also suggested.
