Background: Involvement of communities in the field of health research has been at the forefront of what is considered as ethical conduct of research. A commonly used approach is regular meetings with locally recognized community leaders to consult about research activities, i.e. community engagement. At the Ifakara Health Research Institute (IHI) in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, different approaches to engaging with the community in health research have been used, but there has not been a systematic understanding of the functioning of the community network that is engaged within health research. Methods: To understand the community networks engaged in health research, perceptions of community stakeholders and researchers on the functionality of the community networks was performed. We conducted six focus group discussions with respondents who have participated in IHI research for the past five years and 49 in-depth interviews. Results: Community networks involved in engagement were influenced by the type of research project and kind of participants needed. Different community networks were involved in engagement activities, namely village executive officers, community health workers, hamlet leaders, nurses, doctors and community advisory boards. Approaches used during engagement processes to inform potential participants about the work of IHI and specific studies that are undertaken were useful in passing key information, however, they did not always reach the target population due to having limited levels of interaction with potential participants. Participants and researchers suggested additional ways to engage with the community. Conclusion: There is a need of developing a community engagement unit that would work across projects to support engagement with the community. The unit will maintain continuous engagement with the community and conduct research to understand the relationship between communities we work in and researchers. Funding of this unit could be done through contributions from the core budget, individual’s projects or competitive grant application.

This paper describes an initiative aimed at fostering inquiry-oriented learning through the introduction of the core unit Teachers as Researchers into the first year of the undergraduate program at the Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University. The unit contained three components: 1) introductory research skills for first-year students; 2) training for information technology skills; and 3) a hands-on approach where staff were engaged in research about the students’ learning. These aspects of the Teachers as Researchers unit combined to make it a powerful learning experience for students and staff alike. Several outcomes are evident in the early data analysis. First, students gained confidence in their developing ICT skills, and second, the unit has made a notable contribution to encouraging a ‘community of inquiry amongst pre-service teachers.

McMaster University Continuing Education (Hamilton, Ontario) and the Real Institute in the Chang School, Ryerson University (Toronto, Ontario) are two university continuing education units that respond to the needs of adult learners from newcomer and international backgrounds. McMaster Continuing Education is known for its expertise in online education and support of adult learners as they seek professionally focused education. The Real Institute provides dedicated in-class programming and support strategies for younger adult learners. In this chapter, the experiences of older and younger adults from diverse cultural backgrounds studying at the two units are presented. The authors suggest that the needs of this learner group may be better met within the continuing education unit than within the mainstream academy. Innovative learning strategies and flexibility are key elements in this position. Finally, it is suggested that the two profiled units take their duty of care and commitment to student success seriously.

This article is an attempt at a polemic with selected, published positions of the Polish world of science, which deny the importance of the growing role of IT solutions in modern education, and their representatives still believe that the current system of transferring knowledge using traditional methods (Herbart School) is the only correct one. As early as the early twentieth century, the eminent reformer of American schooling, John Dewey, wrote that „if we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday, we rob them of the future”. The issues discussed concern both the results of the author’s own research on the digitization of Polish schools, as well as a literature review of the OECD, BECTA, Ken Robinson and the Educational Research Institute of the Ministry of National Education in terms of the effects of using information and communication technologies in education.

This chapter examined the theoretical background of the use of a screw working body in front of the planner bucket and conducting experiments in laboratory conditions with the proposed working body. This work supports the practical solution of using a screw working particle in the current field planning. Significance of the work reducing traction resistance to soil movement up to 20% enables the tractor unit to work at higher speeds of translational motion; the latter contributes to increased productivity, improved planning quality and reduced cash costs per unit of work performed. The chapter was prepared under results of research in the Mechanics Laboratory of Bukhara Engineering Technological Institute.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) monitors the actual number of COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care from aggregated data reported by hospitals in Germany. So far, there is no infrastructure to make use of individual patient-level data from intensive care units for public health surveillance. Adopting concepts and components of the already established AKTIN Emergency Department Data registry, we implemented the prototype of a federated and distributed research infrastructure giving the RKI access to patient-level intensive care data.

This chapter presents the results obtained by the International Institute Galileo Galilei (IIGG), a research unit of Fundaringenio, within the framework of the research project developed in 2009 that consists of the design of a basic model of “e-culture system” that can promote and disseminate world cultures, including Santiago del Esteros`s culture (the culture of a northwestern region of Argentina). Culture as a complex phenomenon is studied from the Systemic Paradigm, which is optimized by the transdisciplinary features that allow the concurrence of other complementary perspectives. The methodic process consists of the systemic modelling process and the retroprospective methodology. This process begins with the conception of the Meta Model to be achieved; the Existed Model is built in relation to its past and history. After that, the Existing Model is developed in relation to its present. Each one corresponding to the different scenarios of the events, and they are the basis of the features of “santiagueñidad.” From these, an Operative Model is designed and adapted. The authors present the validation of an operative model, through analogy simulation using the technique of syntegration for the processing of empirical evidence, collected from a statistical sample selected for this purpose. The results confirm the selected features of “santiagueña” culture and the generation of a more general and comprehensive model that could be of value to other cultures and instrumental applications such as in large organizations or companies.

This chapter details attempts to set up a research unit that links university-based academics to the labour movement in the south of Chile called the Work Studies Group from the South (GETSUR). The initiative was inspired by the idea of ‘public sociology’ and by interactions with Michael Burawoy in particular, as well as the model provided by the Society, Work and Politics Institute in South Africa. The chapter explains the challenges to this in the local context, including an underdeveloped trade union tradition combined with intense hostility to activist research in universities themselves. As a result, GETSUR was forced to change institutional affiliation and register as an non-profit organization to secure its independence and sustainability.

The objective of this chapter is to present a case study in the National Polytechnic Institute, which is focused on two aspects: 1) to know what kind of educational practices are implemented in the classroom and how ICTs are used and 2) to analyze the impact of project-based learning (PBL) in the Oral and Written Expression Learning Unit I to know what competences such as creative thinking, improving motivation, and meaningful learning are developed, as well as the use of ICT for research, analysis, experimentation, simulation, and socialization, in such a way that, during the application of the PBL methodology in conjunction with ICT, skills that are required throughout life are developed, both in academic, scientific, and occupational fields.

Webb Institute is.one of the few remaining institutions in the United States, devoted to educating students in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the undergraduate level. Within the context of its educational program, a towing tank was constructed to be able to give hands-on experience to its students in the area of resistance and, later, seakeeping experiments. The facility was named the Robinson Model Basin (RMB) in honor of Admiral Robinson, Webb's president from 1945 to 1950. The primary purpose of the towing tank was always to serve the educational program, although some research and development work was, of course, performed by the Webb faculty. It suffices to mention the work on wave resistance by Ward, the trawler series by Nevitt, the springing research by Hoffman and Van Hooff, among others. What we wish to address now is the towing tank as it relates to: modem trends in the maritime business and in naval architecture education. The primary purpose of this contribution is to solicit the comments of attendees of the 26􀂀 ATTC on our conclusions. We welcome your suggestions.

Under repetitive trainloads, lateral track displacement causes alignment irregularities in ballasted track structures, which in turn leads to gradual track state deterioration. For the prediction of alignment irregularities development, the Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) in Japan has adopted the analytical method of track mechanics to develop an alignment irregularity prediction model which takes track strength, deformation, operational conditions and maintenance & repair into overall account. Based on the actual situation of railway lines in China, this paper sets out to examine the pattern of changes in track alignment irregularity in relation to gross passing tonnage and develop a model of local alignment irregularity degradation called MPLIPM. The model uses track waveform data generated by the track geometry car to predict track alignment irregularities of a unit section. After comparing the predicted values with the actually measured data, evaluation results verified the accuracy of this model.

The principal objective of this research was to determine the merit of transom lift devices on high-performance sailing craft. Transom lift devices modify running trim and also produce several other less-obvious hydrodynamic effects, all of which alter total resistance, thereby affecting the maximum speed achievable under sail. Transom lift devices, in the form of trim tabs, planing wedges, and interceptors, have been used with considerable and quantifiable success for many years on powered craft in both the planing and displacement regimes. This undergraduate thesis extends that research to a round bilged sailing yacht, the Open 60 Imagine—an older Open 60 hull-form by Kaufmann Designs. The effect of transom lift devices was tested on the one-tenth scale model of Imagine in the Robinson Model Basin at Webb Institute. Heel angles of 0, 5, and 10 degrees were investigated at a range of speeds from 1.087 to 13.89 feet per second, model-scale, corresponding to full-scale speeds from 2 to 26 knots. A simplified testing matrix was chosen that did not investigate model yaw, side force, or leeway. Resistance, trim, and sinkage were measured. The study found that transom lift devices, particularly interceptors, greatly affect the trim of the yacht. The devices decrease resistance in the hump region, although on Imagine these decreases were small in magnitude. Importantly, it was shown that the benefits of transom lift devices seem likely to continue even when the yacht is heeled. Outside the hump-region, at both high and low speeds, resistance increased considerably in all configurations. This is thought to be due to increased bow-wetted surface and loss of lift due to excessively decreased trim at the higher speeds. However, it is believed that this study shows that there is considerable merit to the further investigation of transom lift devices on sailing yachts such as Open 60s, particularly more recent hull forms. This paper summarizes work completed for an undergraduate thesis at Webb Institute. Elements of the paper have been designed to meet the original thesis project requirements. Presently available systems for sustainability assessment do not fully account for aspects related to a product’s manufacturing. In an effort to make more sustainable decisions, today’s industry seeks reliable methods to assess and compare sustainability for manufacturing. As part of the Sustainable Manufacturing program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), one of our objectives is to help develop the needed measurement science, standards and methodologies to evaluate and improve sustainability of manufacturing processes. As a first step towards developing standard reference sustainability characterization methodologies for unit manufacturing processes, in this paper we focus on injection molding with energy as the sustainability indicator. We present a science-based guideline to characterize energy consumption for a part manufactured using the injection molding process. Based on the study, we discuss the selection of process parameters and manufacturing resources, determination of cycle time, theoretical minimum energy computations, and estimated energy computations for characterizing the injection molding process.

In September 2018, ATL and Kyoto University tested a mid-scale model of a three-stage ATD unit and confirmed its performance: (1) functioning automatically (refer to Figure 9); (2) achieving reasonable wave height reduction, which is approximately 40%–80% that of a solid barrier of the same height; and (3) demonstrating reasonable strength for a wooden structure under the mid-scale model test conditions. ATL had planned to test a large-scale model of an ATD unit in Oregon State University in May 2020, but that test has been delayed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the wave pressure on the ATD unit is expected to be high during the large-scale model test, ATL requested that the Explosion Research Institute (ERI) simulate the wave pressure on a large-scale model ATD unit, and based on the results, ATL will reinforce the ATD unit. After testing the large-scale model unit, ATL will install ATD barriers along the coast of Japan, customizing the barrier for specific tsunami hazards.

A hybrid offshore renewable energy platform with multiple wind turbines and wave energy converters in a square-type host structure is proposed by Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). In this paper, we conduct a comparative study of wave run-up and slamming occurrence for the numerical simulations and physical 1:50 experiments. This hybrid renewable energy platform comprises a square frame structure with slender support structures as well as spread mooring system. Considering relative kinematics of the three-dimensional structure to waves especially for random seas, it may undergo not only vertical but also horizontal slamming impacts. Following the investigation of the wave run-up (airgap), the three-dimensional slamming occurrence is examined. Both regular waves and random waves are considered. The system identification of the numerical model is checked against the measured data from static-offset and free-decay tests. Following the systematic comparison between the experimental and numerical data, maximum wave run-up and the worst slamming occurrence in terms of the relative velocities are identified.
