This dissertation sets out to assess British trade unions' discourse on the European integration from 1961 to 1992. Providing an abundant empirical first hand material, the unions' journals shed some light on this much debated issue. The corpus is considered from two complementary viewpoints : content analysis and the theory of argumentation. The former aims at quantifying data whereas the latter focuses on the discursive and rhetorical strategies portraying a widely polemical debate. .
Murat, Aktas. "La candidature de la Turquie musulmane à l'Union Européenne : au regard de la presse française." Paris 7, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA070005.
Straddling Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Turkey is a Muslim country but it is also a modem and secular one. It was accepted as an official candidate for accession to the European Union at the Helsinki summit of 10 and 11 December 1999 and negotiations started on 3 October 2005. Accession constitutes an important issue for Turkey, for which it undertook several major reforms. Indeed, Turks look at Europe not only as a wealth-creating area but also and above ail as a guarantee of stability and the pathway to democracy and modernity. As a base for exportation to the Middle East and Central Asia, Turkey should become during the 21st century a major economic actor on the Worldwide stage, owing to its geographical position and the potential size of its - for now still poorly developed - domestic market. Le Monde and Le Figaro have understood that Turkey's candidacy is a fundamental issue in the European debate and they have attempted to throw some light on its context and implications
Marchand, Vera. "The question of Europe in the Brexit referendum campaign and the role of media." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 3, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023PA030067.
In June 2016, the British people voted for Brexit. The referendum campaign opposed the Remain and the Leave side, whose respective campaign arguments were discussed through the media. This thesis will focus on the British written press, particularly on the way newspapers supported or disputed the notion of a continued UK membership of the EU. Historically biased towards the right of the political spectrum, the British tabloid press has traditionally upheld Eurosceptic positions. Adopting a thematic approach, this thesis will investigate the populist and Eurosceptic discourses underpinning the Brexit narrative, through a qualitative-content analysis of the press coverage of the EU referendum campaign. The notion of populist Euroscepticism is relatively recent which begs the question whether a systematic application of this concept to our qualitative analysis is relevant or not. However, both the polarization of Britain's political parties, and the persistence of Eurosceptic coverage, can be associated with the mainstreaming of a radicalized discourse over the EU. This thesis will explore the ways in which the narratives over Europe have been shaped in British newspapers during the referendum campaign. The newspapers under scrutiny will include: (i) The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Daily Telegraph; (ii) The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Times and the Daily Mirror. This thesis will focus on how the discourse of these newspapers has evolved through a detailed analysis of the crucial events of the referendum campaign and its actors. The analysis will also include public statements, letters, and speeches as well as interviews with MPs and academic experts
Guillard, Christine. "L'intégration différenciée dans l'Union européenne." Tours, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003TOUR1003.
Although differentiated integration permits the Member States not to be subjected to the same rules, it does not jeopardize the european unity. There is no automatic antagonism with the principles which guarantee the unity of the economic and political structure of the Community. Despite the required adaptations, differentiation also respects the institutional unity. It does not threaten the essential elements of the Community structure and the role of the institutions. Flexibility neither prevents from making normative unity. It does not lead to the creation of a new legal order. Moreover, the institutions make sure of the coherence of the european Union Law. Above all, differentiation is a roundabout mean to unify the european Union Law. Indirectly, it furthers the adoption of rules which are applicable to all member states. Contrary to all expectations, it is temporary, has a deterrent effect and influences the Community Lawmaker

This work provides an analysis of the public opinion in the EU countries on further enlargement. Public opinion plays in the current integration processes an important role and an integral part of the research concerning the European Union. The differentiation in the support for the EU enlargement across the 25 countries can be explained by the multivariate LISREL (linear structural equations) analysis that makes possible to identify a causal system through the explanatory model. The model includes structural and public opinion variables in the set of the twenty-five EU member states. Multivariate statistical analysis shows (i) a tension among the rich and the poor EU member states in the enlargement process, (ii) a low public opinion support for the enlargement and deepening processes in the countries of EU core, and on the contrary, a clear support to both processes in the group of latest member states, (iii) greater importance of Post-materialist values in the Protestant countries in the public opinion
Pricopie, Valentina. "Mutations actuelles de la presse roumaine en vue de l'intégration européenne." Lyon 2, 2006. http://theses.univ-lyon2.fr/documents/lyon2/2006/pricopie_v.
This thesis analyzed the major changes of the 1989-2004 period and its particular focus is on the analysis of 2002-2005 period in ten national newspapers (from which five are the most important Romanian newspapers). It also presented the interviews with the specialized journalists in European integration from the ten newspapers included in the analysis. Through the analysis of the ten newspapers' content we had identified the year 2000 as the first important moment in the process of media awareness of the importance of the European integration issue. During the entire period of social and political transition, the European Union had remained one of the most important objects of the media discourse. In 2002, the great delay of Romania and Bulgaria regarding the negotiations had lead to the postponing of their adhesion at a future date, and this had made of the temporality of waiting the basis of the Romanian journalists: 2007 or 2008? The date of Romania’s adhesion at the European Union has remained uncertain and the transformations of the Romanian journalists in the view of the European integration had revealed the peculiarities of a durable media event, which is doubled by journalists' specialization in this field and the apparitions and the development of newspapers' sections: "Europe / Integration"

The analysis of the Cypriot problem because of the strategic location of the island and because of its proximity, takes on particular importance as Cyprus is part of the last wave of enlargment of European Union the 1st of May 2004. Cyprus is devided since 1974 between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC). The South under Greek influence is the only one to be recognized by the International Community. The North is under influence of Turkey which is the only country to recognize it and has a military presence of 30 000 soldiers. The United Nations, with the help of the European Commission, has striven to settle a solution for the division before the accession of Cyprus to the European Union. The last attempts failed like the previous one since 1968. The first step of our analysis was to formulate the bilateral issues between the two Cypriot communities, Greek and Turkish, by drawing the history of the Cyprus Island. We have also explained the problems between Grece and Turkey which relate to the Cypriot conflict, in order to work on the political and diplomatical aspects. It was important to have a reflexion on the different scenarios of peace established by the United Nations, to understand the role of Great Britain, to analyse French and German perspectives, to define the type of relations these countries have with Cyprus, to look at the advancement of the negociations for the accession of Cyprus to the EU and to give the European stand on this country before coming to our objective: to know if the accession to the EU can be a solution to the Cypriot problem
Ant, Kiymet. "La conditionnalité politique dans le cadre de la demande d’adhésion de la Turquie à l’Union européenne." Grenoble 2, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008GRE21022.
The request for membership of Turkey to the European Union brings out all the weaknesses of the political conditionality. It is undeniable that this one, juridically, conditions its adhesion to the European Union. Indeed, it sets down some conditions and once these are accomplished, the adhesion is approved by legal agreement, called "Treaty of Accession". However, as it has not been codified yet, its content remains unspecified and variable. As a consequence, it becomes a flexible concept. Therefore political conditionality can be used as a bypass to political declarations which can generate some tensions between the European Union and the State candidate. Under the membership condition, finally, it constitutes a legal folding screen for the service of the politic. Certainly, the variability of a concept in its application does not affect its effectivity. However, we can notice through the request for membership of Turkey, that the problem is not about its adaptability to the particular situations of each candidate, - to watch out their specific difficulties - but about the variability of its contents and more even, its legal force, in order to satisfy political and geostrategic interests. Indeed, for Turkey, while the generic political conditionality is an incidental character, a specific conditionality is essential for it: the diplomatic conditionality and the identity conditionality

Having dedicated master's essay to the German reactions of the political, economic forces and the public opinion in front of the economic and monetary Union and the D. E. A. In the European construction and in the interests of Germany after the unification, the thesis widens more the field of analysis. It has for feature the French-German tandem and the evolution of the European construction during 1990's in the domains which dominated this period: the economic and monetary Union, the enlargement of the European Union and the institutional questions relating to it, as well as the Foreign policy of security and defence. In spite of the intensity of the dialogue between France and Germany in the whole of three domains, the economic and monetary Union was the only project really shaped by the French-German couple. Real coronation of the "method Monnet", the way of the economic integration showed that France and Germany knew how to harmonize their interests and impose their conceptions to the other European partners, quite particularly in the economic domain, dominated, in continental Europe, by the German power, being directly followed by France. The other domains, marked or by a dimension of political integration either asking essential questions on the nature of the European Union, benefited certainly from the French-German partnership. But this dialogue did not really result in big common projects. Within the framework of the enlargement, the French hesitations were too important for allowing a real common French-German approach. In the field of the defence, it was especially the incapacity of Germany, too much worried by its progressive return on the world scene, to adapt itself to the political and technical plan in the new military challenges, that slowed down the French-German engine. Today, the three construction sites which marked the European debates remain widely unfinished and put so a continuous challenge in the French-German couple, henceforth forced to get modernized and to be reformed. So that the question of a harmonization of the economic policies in Europe often returns in the debates. .

How does the Spanish press picture France and Europe during the last thirteen years of the reign of Ferdinand VII (1820-1833), which is witnessing the emergence of a new political force: the public opinion? From a set of articles that express as much as possible the different political trends of that time, this thesis analyzes the different forms of representations of France and European diplomacy, their dynamics as well as the social functions and socio-historical factors that may have influenced the Spanish press under the Trienio Liberal (1820-1823), then under the so-called Ominous Decade (1823-1833).The study of this set of XIXth century articles thus intends first to shed a light on the representations of the French revolutionary past and the Peninsular War (1808-1814). In a second phase, the analysis of the Spanish press published in Spain during and after the expedition of the Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis, which begun in April 1823, highlights the evolution of representations of French-Spanish diplomatic relations within the Europe of the Holy Alliance. Finally, the third part of this thesis is devoted to the press articles published from 1824 in London by liberal political refugees. It tries to provide answers to the dual representations of France and Europe carried out by the Spanish press, which appeared during the Ominous Decade. It also analyses the renewed representations of France and Europe after the revolution of July 1830 in the Gaceta of Madrid and in some articles written by Mariano José de Larra

Banat is a cross-border region, covering territories belonging to three countries : Romania Serbia and Hungary. Although the development level of the region places Banat on the second level after Bucharest, the capital city, the region displays some discrepancies, event contrast. The study aims to show methodologically and theoretically the geographic research of the contrasts, on grounds o which it should establish the differences on micro-scale level, the intra-regional typology and analyze the subspaces revealed by dies research in prospective manner that should take into account the present processes of social-economic transition and of the EU enlargement. Banat still remains a place of living, a region much loved by its inhabitants. Thus it may represent a valid space for the study of the necessary intra-regional development strategies

With the enlargements of the European Union in the East in 2004 and 2007, regional disparities profoundly increased and a solidarity effort between State members and the regions was necessary. This thesis suggests estimating the scale of regional disparities and measuring the process of convergence and regional integration in Europe. It is thus a matter of zooming on the Central and eastern European countries to identify the explanatory factors at the origin of the uneven regional development in this part of the European space. Furthermore, in the debate between equity and competitiveness of the European Structural funds, a reflection was led on the eventuality of a cohesion policy rethought taking into account the neighboring effects on the regional growth and the convergence was argued. The methodology developped in this thesis couples spatial statistics (global and local spatial autocorrelation), spatial analysis (GWR), modelling by cellular automaton (Géocells) and mathematical formalization of the local convergence

This these has for object to analyse the reactions of the ECB faced with his objectives, in the framework of its monetary politicy. So, the estimations taken from the TAYLOR's rule, delineate a strategy of the monetary politicy, announced by the E. C. B as an inflation target, but few elements show that the E. C. B targets a level of production. The recent expansion of the European construction, let new questions appear about the economical policies study of the EBC. Indeed, the newcomers in the E. U, bring about an institutional modification in the decision process of the E. C. B, which is expressed by a possible mutation of its monetary politicy. At last, the analysis explains how the decisions taken by the ECB act upon the macroeconomic fundamentals of the C. E. E. C; the estimation of the transmission mecanisms in the newcomers monetary policy, with the VAR processus, emphasizes their persistant heterogeneousness

The analysis of systemic financial stability stands for a complex demarche which supposes the analysis of the supervision framework, the identification of potential stability risks, and the identification of quantitive techniques applied for assessing financial system stability. The present study follows a similar path and its aim is to analize the romanian financial system stability in the context of EMU [Economic and monetary union] accession. A distinctive element of the study is represented by the comparative approach of systemic stability quantitative assessment techniques and by the construction of a financial stability index stability in the perspective of euro adoption. In respect of romanian financial sector stability, degradation is visible as a consequence of the present international fianancial crisis. That is why the financial system seems unprepared for sustaining Romania's accession to the EMU

The Turkish mass-medias have a great influence and play a dominant role in shaping the public opinion and giving trends regarding evolutions of relationships between the EU and Turkey. Let us recall that the Helsinki summit in December 1999 approved its candidature to become full member of the EU. This candidature was refused on December 17, 1989 by the EC for economic and demographic reasons, but masking others, of a cultural and religious nature : the freezing of relations was unavoidable. The years 1990 will mark the brutal collapse of the USSR, reducing the place of Turkey in the favor of east european countries. In spite of the Association council EC-Turkey confirming criteria equality for all the applicant countries, the Luxemburg summit of December 1997 plead an economic delay and democratic deficiencies to move it apart from the European field. Having a chaotic but competitive economy, a dynamic society and a domestic market supported by a strong purchasing power from part of the population, Turkey has good chances. The permanence of a high inflation rate since the 90's and an uneven distribution of incomes remain nevertheless its weak points. Having the essential characteristics of a modern and laic State, the country is slow in implementing the institutional reforms needed to harmonize democracy and State of right as in European countries. The political and social life, since Mustafa Kemal Atatürk reforms, has been modelled on a Europeanization basis. The EU would be well advised to reinforce this large neighbor and NATO allied so that it can be viewed as model by other countries of the region. Its implication in Balkans along with Greek-Turkish relationships evolution are signs going in this direction. From the point of view of the European security, Turkey can assert its key position within the NATO. Suffering from a negative image, it must use new technology for get rid of generally accepted ideas. Its strengthening in various interior fields remains ignored by international opinion public. Having however the support of the United States and the invitation of Europe, an eventual final refusal is actually not on the air. Progress made to integrate the EU is a boosting factor, having to be used for the country and its population

After the definition of conditions for accession to the European Union (EU) in 1993, the enlargement policy towards the East was deemed to be asymmetrical and unilateral. The reform of 1997 allowed scholars to identify the introduction of a new mode of governance. How far is this thesis founded? A raw of empirical elements collected between 2000 and 2004 give ground to following hypothesis: the EU transferred an internal governance method based on interaction – the open method of coordination (OMC) – in order to solve the capacity expectation gaps encountered in its external environment. Previous enlargements show that internal modes of governance – intergovernmentalism, economic regulation, Monnet method – always inspired the Commission to cope with contradictions. Therefore, how far did conditionality represent a frame for mutual learning and socialisation after 1997? The constructivist approach of cognitive and action frames helps to deconstruct three virtues of governance by knowledge: the consistency and internal legitimacy of the enlargement policy stayed unaccomplished; implementation of reforms in the accession states were limited due to legacies of the past; mechanisms for mutual learning and socialisation gave way to the common definition of the cognitive and action frames of internal and external EU policies. But convergence on values did not hinder internal tensions on the meaning a Europe of Twenty-Five should be given

This PhD thesis analyses the German political foundations as actors of both foreign policy and transnational party cooperation. As party related, publicly financed organisations the German foundations may be considered as brokers between different institutional fields and this position is their main resource. At first the conditions of foundations’ emergence in the post-war Germany are analysed: the beginnings of the German Foreign policy during the Cold War, the interministerial struggles for the definition of the development policy. Analysing the intrication of public and private actors in the conduct of the Foreign policy allows studying the legitimating of this policy at the administrative level, such as the construction and strategic use of the NGO image by the foundations. The case study of foundations’ involvement in Poland during the transformation process throws new light on usual approaches of “democracy assistance”, as an interactive perspective is proposed. Moreover, observing foundations’ action as mediators to the transnational party cooperation during the EU enlargement allows studying the mechanisms of party affiliation preceding the accession of new member states. Thus, socialisation forums and transnational norm dynamics are revalorised, which goes beyond the conditionality framework dominating the enlargement studies

Hungary has been a member of the European Union since May 1st, 2004. After the first free elections in spring 1990, governments began and achieved the entry process to the European Union following the 1993 Copenhagen criteria. This thesis aims to examine the political, economical and social transformations in the scope of a long era [from 1990 to 2009] in order to show the complexity of the relations pertaining to the European integration and a less stable democracy than one thought, especially since the Roma question reveals not only persisting but also flourishing nationalistic and racist ideologies

The narrative according to which « Europe » is a continent with inflexible and irrefutable limits is a mainstream belief in states traditionally considered as European. However, circa 2004-2005, the debates owed to the European Treaty have seen the introduction of strong statements about what it would or wouldn't be. Though, instead of exploring the issue of a “large scale Europe” from a geographical dimension; the controversy most political scientists and other researchers took hold of was driven by an attempt to decide on the place of Turkey in that region which recently had been recognized an official candidate to EU (1999). As a matter of fact, despite its candidacy, Turkey would remain both part and apart of the region, because of a supposed “europeaness” deficit. Rather it would be expected to be part of other regional categories such as « Asia », the « Middle East » or the « Muslim world ». Thenceforward, through the unique and paradoxical example that is Turkey - focusing on representations of Turkish undergraduate students -, this thesis proposes to decrypt differently what stands for “Europe”, in a geographical perspective. First, this study proposes a classical regional analysis to set up the frame through which we will examine Turkish representations and geographic imaginaries. Yet it also aims to define a homogenous European region based on different classical factors in order to sketch the study's background. Then a long-term analysis of the contemporary Turkish international relations underlines its strong anchorage into European politics and the limits of attempting to define « Europe » through that lens. On the contrary, it leads to consider that the image of a strongly bordered « Europe » may come from people’s representations. Thus, in a second time, the study focuses on the emerging representations - both individual and collective - of a spatial and conceptual definition of « Europe ». Third, it interrogates the attractiveness of European countries relatively to the rest of the World, with the ambition to evaluate its potential “decline”. In a non-Eurocentric perspective, this thesis examines some Turkish way to look at « Europe » by developing two original survey materials built on a mix of interpretative and explicative methods, and a systemic analysis of its results

The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the better understanding of the orthodox culture, and more particularly of two countries embracing the Orthodox culture, Greece (a European, Mediterranean, and Balkan country) and Serbia (a European, Balkan, and Danubian country) by the European family of states and institutions. The theoritical presentation of the Orthodox culture, especially of its political dimension, through the study of Patristic and Sacred Texts, reveals its impact in the public, political and strategic debate and planning of the countries and peoples who embrace her. The comparative study of the liturgical and ritual practices, as well as of the political and strategic projects in Greece and Serbia, decode the specific political weight of the Orthodox culture within these two countries, during their national histories, and the procedure of construction and manifestation of local, regional, national and state identities. This comparison is based on the study of geomorphological, geopolitical, geoeconomic, social, historical, traditional data. Finally, we will try to integrate the Orthodox culture in the new European family, i. E. , a flexible and inclusive Europe, faithful to its roots, adult and willing to assume its plural identity, its history, and its collective responsibilities vis-à-vis the challenge of the XXIe century. A Europe, built according to a new architecture of creative and solid union of peoples, multiple cultures, such as the Orthodox one
