Анотація:

The health of democratic public spheres is challenged by the circulation of falsehoods. These epistemic problems are connected to social media and they raise a classic problem of how to understand the role of technology in political developments. We discuss three sets of technological affordances of social media that facilitate the spread of false beliefs: obscuring the provenance of information, facilitating deception about authorship, and providing for manipulation of social signals. We argue that these do not make social media a “cause” of problems with falsehoods, but explanations of epistemic problems should account for social media to understand the timing and widespread occurrence of epistemic problems. We argue that “the marketplace of ideas” cannot be adequate as a remedy for these problems, which require epistemic editing by the press.

The rps12 gene transcripts encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein S12 are partially edited in petunia mitochondria. Different petunia lines were found vary in the extent of rps12 transcript editing. To test whether multiple forms of RPS12 proteins are produced in petunia mitochondria as a result of partial editing, we probed mitochondrial proteins with specific antibodies against edited and unedited forms of a 13-amino-acid RPS12 peptide spanning two amino acids affected by RNA editing. Both antibodies reacted with mitochondrial proteins at the expected size for RPS12 proteins. The amounts of unedited RPS12 protein in different petunia lines correlate with the abundance of unedited transcripts in these plants. Unedited rps12 translation products are also detected in other plant species, indicating that polymorphism in mitochondrial rps12 expression is widespread. Moreover, we show that RPS12 proteins recognized by both edited-specific and unedited-specific antibodies are present in a petunia mitochondrial ribosome fraction. These results demonstrate that partially edited transcripts can be translated and that the protein product can accumulate to detectable levels. Therefore, genes exhibiting incompletely edited transcripts can encode more than one gene product in plant mitochondria.

Background: Falcotentorial meningiomas are pineal region meningiomas that arise from the dura of the tentorium cerebelli and posterior part of the falx. These tumors are commonly supplied by branches of the internal carotid artery such as the meningohypophyseal trunk, inferolateral trunk, and anterior choroidal artery. Less frequently, branches of the ophthalmic artery, vertebral artery, or external carotid artery are also involved. Based on neuroimaging studies, falcotentorial meningiomas may be classified as anterior, superior, inferior, and posterior types. Here, we present an unedited microsurgical resection of a superior falcotentorial meningioma. Case Description: The patient with a meningioma of the posterior inferior falx and a minimal extension to the tentorium underwent sitting praying position and a right occipital interhemispheric approach. Strong retraction of the dura followed a superior sagittal sinus based opening. Careful microsurgical access between the medial surface of the occipital lobe and the falx toward the splenium of corpus callosum allowed us to recognize the lesion. Thus, a cottonoid placed over the cerebral surface avoiding direct contact with the bipolar forceps, and the constant separation of the falx cerebri with the aspiration tube along the access developed a proper surgical route preventing any cortical lesion. Along the approach, cerebrospinal fluid was continuously released from the pericallosal cistern as well. Once well recognized the meningioma, we proceeded with the internal decompression of the lesion using a thumb regulated suction tube and bipolar forceps. Tissue samples from the tumor were taken for the histological diagnosis, and under conventional microsurgical technique, the meningioma was completely removed by piecemeal technique. A small lateral tear on the falx required hemostatic reparation with Tachosil. Water dissection provided us a clear cleavage plane for the microsurgical dissection of the tumor and maintained a clean operative field along the procedure. Occipital arteries running over the lateral surface of the meningioma were carefully dissected and isolated from the lesion, while the deep venous system did not achieve any contact with the tumor. After the ipsilateral component of the meningioma was resected, we intent are dissecting the contralateral segments of the tumor with a curved dissector. At the last stage of the surgery, small incision at a tumor-free segment of the falx allowed us to remove the falcotentorial attachment of the lesion. Under high microscopic magnification, the remaining minimal portion of meningioma extending under the tentorium was coagulated. After complete microsurgical removal of the meningioma, careful homeostasis based on electrocoagulation surgical and Tachosil was achieved. Finally, we performed a surgical wound closure under standard technique. Conclusion: This unedited video offers all detailed aspects for an efficient and safe falcotentorial meningioma microneurosurgery. Whole-brain four-dimensional computed tomography angiography (W4D-CTA) using a 320-row area detector CT (320r-ADCT) has been applied before thrombectomy. Endovascular physicians require images with high interrater reliability (IRR) for making appropriate decisions. However, the 320r-ADCT gantry cannot be tilted, and the patient’s head position influences the anteroposterior (AP)-view W4D-CTA images. This study aimed to determine which W4D-CTA images are appropriate pre-thrombectomy, whether the unedited AP view or cut-out Towne view. This study included the W4D-CTA images of acute stroke patients with occlusion of the internal carotid artery or the middle cerebral artery (MCA) from April to July 2021. Images produced by 320r-ADCT were transferred to a workstation. Unedited AP-view images were automatically generated. Towne-view images were cut out for this study. Collateral status was evaluated as poor, intermediate, or good based on the visualization of the MCA peripheral branches. In addition, the IRR was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) (2,1). Fifteen patients were analyzed. In the unedited AP-view and cut-out Towne-view W4D-CTA images, the ICC (2,1) were 0.147 and 0.796, respectively. Cut-out Towne-view W4D-CTA images with substantial IRR are superior to the unedited AP-view images for assessing the anterior intracranial collateral status.

Abstract Introduction Previous studies have shown automatic scoring of portable level 3 sleep study provides similar findings when compared to polysomnography (PSG), establishing home sleep apnea tests (HSAT) as an adequate screening tool for OSA. Accuracy of level 3 studies with Nox T3 portable sleep studies (Noxturna Inc., Atlanta GA) may improve with manual editing to include total sleep time (TST). No other studies have compared unedited versus manually edited HSAT with level 1 in-lab PSG performed simultaneously. This study evaluates if added manual editing optimizes the diagnostic accuracy of HSAT in classifying the severity of OSA, using both AASM and CMS criteria. Methods Secondary analysis of six-center (n=206) sleep apnea diagnostic comparative effectiveness trial. Participants underwent simultaneous administration of level 1 PSG (Philips Alice 6 LDx Diagnostic Sleep system) and Nox T3 portable sleep study with centralized scoring using AASM and CMS criteria. All HSAT were autoscored and then edited by the registered polysomnographic technician. Editing entailed establishing start and stop recording times based on accompanying actigraphy data (reduction in movement) in the portable device and elimination of recording artifact. Results Using AASM criteria, poor sensitivity OSA (AHI≥5) was observed using unedited vs PSG (p=.01) compared to manually edited HSAT vs. PSG (p=.06). No statistically significant difference was observed using AHI≥15 or via categorization across four levels of OSA (none, mild, moderate, or severe). In contrast, CMS criteria comparisons to PSG showed poor specificity of OSA (AHI≥5) for unedited (p=.003) compared to edited (p=.372) HSAT studies. As expected, total sleep time was overestimated using T3 actigraphy devices compared to the criterion standard across both edited and unedited studies (p=.001, .001 respectively). Conclusion Improvements in sensitivity and specificity of OSA were noted using edited versus unedited T3 HSAT when compared to Level 1 PSG using both AASM and CMS criteria. Background: Vein of Galen arteriovenous malformations (VGAVMs) are vascular malformations of the pineal region between a persistent embryological median prosencephalic vein of Markowski and the arterial choroidal system by a direct (mural type) or indirect (choroidal type) communication. Angiographic evaluation of VGAVMs usually describes a limbic arch between the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries throughout a pericallosal artery, and the classic “ε” shape configuration of the thalamostriate veins drainage into a subtemporal or a lateral mesencephalic vein due to the underdevelopment of the straight sinus, sigmoid sinus, and jugular bulbs. Moreover, falcine dural channels join the pouch of the malformation with the posterior third of the superior sagittal sinus and less frequently with the cavernous sinus, inferior petrosal sinus, and facial veins. At present, endovascular therapy is the standard management for these lesions. However, under failure of endovascular procedures such in this case, microsurgical management of VGAVMs under an experienced neurosurgical team might be paramount. Case Description: The patient with a choroidal type VGAVM and multiple failed endovascular procedures underwent sitting praying position and midline supracerebellar infratentorial approach. Strong retraction with stitches and proper hemostasis of a highly vascular dura was achieved after transverse sinus-based opening. Accurate microsurgical dissection between the superior cerebellar surface and the tentorium allowed a supracerebellar approach over the vermis and along the midline recognizing the venous pouch of the VGAVM instead of the absent straight sinus. Water dissection allowed us to differentiate the cleavage plane between the VGAVM and surrounding structures maintaining an impeccable surgical field as well. Under high microscopic magnification, arterial feeders of the malformation coming from the posterior cerebral artery were recognized. Intraoperative angiography and reevaluation of the preoperative imaging helped us to confirm a safety approach before coagulation and cut those vascular feeders. Throughout an open-close and short bursts bipolar coagulation techniques preventing attachment of conventional bipolar tips within the vascular structure and without permanent use of water irrigation, the vessels were carefully dissected, coagulated, and sectioned. Along with our experience, we believe that this standard coagulation technique applied in all vascular malformation surgeries is safe and effective. A remaining small plexiform malformation associated with the vein of Galen malformation was coagulated and isolated. A new intraoperative angiography determined complete microsurgical occlusion of the VGAVM. Careful homeostasis based on electrocoagulation and surgical was achieved. Finally, we performed a microsurgical wound closure as a conventional technique in Helsinki neurosurgery. Conclusion: This unedited video offers all detailed aspects that a neurosurgeon as the senior author JH considers essential when performing an efficient and safe surgery for a VGAVM. Abstract This essay presents an edition and translation of two hitherto unedited Coptic collections of sayings preserved in the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Canada), Words of Instruction attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria and a group of anonymous Sayings, once wrongly attributed to Evagrius. After a description of the manuscript (characteristics, provenance, context of its acquisition) and of its contents (texts, language, previous research), I present in greater detail the two previously unedited collections of sayings found in it (characteristics of the sayings, original language, milieu of composition, attribution, dating, etc.). Finally, I offer brief comments on their place among similar collections. The edition and French translation of the two collections follow, each accompanied by notes.

ABSTRACT Mitochondrial RNAs in Trypanosoma brucei undergo posttranscriptional RNA editing and polyadenylation. We previously showed that polyadenylation stimulates turnover of unedited RNAs. Here, we investigated the role of polyadenylation in decay of edited RPS12 RNA. In in vitro turnover assays, nonadenylated fully edited RNA degrades significantly faster than its unedited counterpart. Rapid turnover of nonadenylated RNA is facilitated by editing at just six editing sites. Surprisingly, in direct contrast to unedited RNA, turnover of fully edited RNA is dramatically slowed by addition of a poly(A)20 tail. The same minimal edited sequence that stimulates decay of nonadenylated RNA is sufficient to switch the poly(A) tail from a destabilizing to a stabilizing element. Both nucleotide composition and length of the 3′ extension are important for stabilization of edited RNA. Titration of poly(A) into RNA degradation reactions has no effect on turnover of polyadenylated edited RNA. These results suggest the presence of a protective protein(s) that simultaneously recognizes the poly(A) tail and small edited element and which blocks the action of a 3′-5′ exonuclease. This study provides the first evidence for opposing effects of polyadenylation on RNA stability within a single organelle and suggests a novel and unique regulation of RNA turnover in this system.

In his account of the contents of the second volume of London, British Library, Cotton Otho C. i, Kenneth Sisam drew attention to an unpublished sermon on the sins of the tongue to which he gave the title Evil Tongues. The sermon is written in the same hand as the two texts which precede it in the manuscript – an Old English version of St Jerome's Vita Malchi monachi captivi (henceforth Malchus) and a translation of a letter by Boniface (Wynfrith) on an anonymous priest's vision of the next world (henceforth Wynfrith's Letter) Sisam was unable to identify a source for the Evil Tongues sermon, but close parallels for most of the Old English text are found in anther work by Jerome, the exposition of Ps. CXIX in his Tractatus in Psalmos.

Background Gliomas are the most common and lethal type of intracranial tumors. With the current treatment regime, the median survival of patients with grade IV glioma (glioblastoma/GBM) remains at 14–16 months. RNA editing modifies the function and regulation of transcripts. The development of glial tumors may be caused by altered RNA editing events. Methods In this study, we uncover the global RNA editome landscape of glioma patients from RNA-seq data of control, lower grade glioma (LGG) and GBM samples (n = 1,083). Results A-to-I editing events were found to comprise 80% of the total editing events of which 96% were located in the Alu regions. The total RNA editing events were found to be reduced in glioma compared to control samples. More specifically, we found Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor alpha3 (GABRA3) to be edited (c.1026 A-to-G; pI343M) in 73% (editing ratio 0.8) of control samples compared to LGG (28.96%; 0.47) and GBM (5.2%; 0.53) samples. GABRA3 transcript level was found to be downregulated in glioma compared to control in a grade-specific manner with GBMs having the lowest level of the transcript. Further, GABRA3 transcripts were observed to be higher in edited compared to unedited glioma samples. The transcript and protein levels of exogenously expressed gene were found to be higher for edited compared to unedited GABRA3 in glioma cells. Further, exogenously expressed edited GABRA3 inhibited migration and invasion of glioma cells efficiently but not the unedited GABRA3. Conclusion Collectively, our study discovered a reduction in RNA editing during glioma development. We further demonstrate that elevated RNA editing maintains a high level of GABRA3 RNA and protein in normal glial cells which provides a less migratory environment for the normal functioning of the brain. In contrast, the reduction in GABRA3 protein levels, due to lower stability of unedited RNA, results in the loss of function which confers an aggressive phenotype to GBM tumor.

The bodonids and cryptobiids represent an early diverged sister group to the trypanosomatids among the kinetoplastid protozoa. The trypanosome type of uridine insertion-deletion RNA editing was found to occur in the cryptobiid fish parasite Trypanoplasma borreli. A pan-edited ribosomal protein, S12, and a novel 3'- and 5'-edited cytochrome b, in addition to an unedited cytochrome oxidase III gene and an apparently unedited 12S rRNA gene, were found in a 6-kb fragment of the 80- to 90-kb mitochondrial genome. The gene order differs from that in trypanosomatids, as does the organization of putative guide RNA genes; guide RNA-like molecules are transcribed from tandemly repeated 1-kb sequences organized in 200- and 170-kb molecules instead of minicircles. The presence of pan-editing in this lineage is consistent with an ancient evolutionary origin of this process.

Ignatius’ hymnographic corpus is still composed by the scattered group of compositions listed a century ago. But it is to be noted that on many of the compositions attributed to Ignatius, however, there is often the doubt of Theophanes’ authorship. This contribution starts from an analysis of the elements offered by the manuscript tradition in order to proceed to a complete redefinition of production and style of the hymnographer, according particular attention to the great number of Ignatius’ unedited compositions. On one hand, in fact, it is possible to attribute to Ignatius, on the basis of the testimony of the liturgical Typikon of Evergetis, some canons already known by other means. On the other hand, in the manuscripts there is other hymnographic material, still completely unedited, which could be attributed to Ignatius and be useful to a comprehensive picture of the matter.

The bodonids and cryptobiids represent an early diverged sister group to the trypanosomatids among the kinetoplastid protozoa. The trypanosome type of uridine insertion-deletion RNA editing was found to occur in the cryptobiid fish parasite Trypanoplasma borreli. A pan-edited ribosomal protein, S12, and a novel 3'- and 5'-edited cytochrome b, in addition to an unedited cytochrome oxidase III gene and an apparently unedited 12S rRNA gene, were found in a 6-kb fragment of the 80- to 90-kb mitochondrial genome. The gene order differs from that in trypanosomatids, as does the organization of putative guide RNA genes; guide RNA-like molecules are transcribed from tandemly repeated 1-kb sequences organized in 200- and 170-kb molecules instead of minicircles. The presence of pan-editing in this lineage is consistent with an ancient evolutionary origin of this process.

Background: Medication therapy management (MTM) may be optimized if pharmacists engaged in health information exchange (HIE) by reviewing unedited medical records. Methods: In this nonblinded, randomized, controlled pilot, pharmacists delivered a part of MTM, comprehensive medication reviews (CMRs), to adult patients in a practice-based research network (PBRN). Intervention community pharmacists solicited the last 6 months of patients’ primary care provider-held, unedited medical records. The primary and secondary outcomes were the number of medication-related problems (MRPs) and preventive care omissions identified. The intervention was analyzed via Mann-Whitney U test and multivariate linear regression models. Pharmacists were surveyed regarding the available health history’s helpfulness in CMR delivery. Results: Thirty-seven patients received CMRs across the 2 groups. Intervention pharmacists (n = 4) identified significantly more MRPs (median = 11 vs 6; B = 6.98, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.005-13.96; P = .049) and omissions in preventive care (24% vs 17%; B = 2.78, 95% CI: 0.46-5.10; P = .009) than usual care pharmacists (n = 3). Intervention pharmacists were more likely to agree they were confident they identified all of the patient’s MRPs (47.1% vs 15.8%), but neither group was more likely than the other to believe they had resolved all MRPs (41.2% vs 42.1%). Finally, intervention pharmacists agreed 100% of the time that the available health history helped them complete a better CMR, compared with only 69% of usual care pharmacists. Conclusion: In this pilot, community pharmacists identified more MRPs and omissions in preventive care when they reviewed unedited medical records. Larger studies are warranted to determine whether HIE can improve outcomes.

The geological materials used in early Christian Syrian churches involve a lithic furnishing element: the lectern throne of the Syriac bema, a stone device used as a support for the holy books. Some inscriptions found in Syria suggest an interpretation for this artifact, located in the middle of the Syriac bema hemicycle, fronting the altar zone. These elements were made of basalt or limestone, depending on the geographical–geological context of the building. In this work, an unedited classification of the main typologies of thrones is proposed with a collatio between geo-archaeological data, epigraphic texts, mosaic inscriptions, literary sources, and findings. The role of this uncommon piece of furniture, uncertain up to now, is explained with a new interpretation coming from archaeological–architectural data combined with ancient sources. The study thus locates this architectonical sculpture in the building stratigraphy and also describes decorations from the lecterns, thus contributing to chronology analysis of published and unedited Syrian sites.

Abstract In animals, the most common type of RNA editing is the deamination of adenosines (A) into inosines (I). Because inosines basepair with cytosines (C), they are interpreted as guanosines (G) by the cellular machinery and genomically encoded G alleles at edited sites mimic the function of edited RNAs. The contribution of this hardwiring effect on genome evolution remains obscure. We looked for population genomics signatures of adaptive evolution associated with A-to-I RNA edited sites in humans and Drosophila melanogaster. We found that single nucleotide polymorphisms at edited sites occur 3 (humans) to 15 times (Drosophila) more often than at unedited sites, the nucleotide G is virtually the unique alternative allele at edited sites and G alleles segregate at higher frequency at edited sites than at unedited sites. Our study reveals that a significant fraction of coding synonymous and nonsynonymous as well as silent and intergenic A-to-I RNA editing sites are likely adaptive in the distantly related human and Drosophila lineages.

English language learners encounter difficulties in mastering grammar and vocabulary, which can significantly influence their writing skills. This study analyzes the most common writing errors and their linguistic classification in student journalists’ unedited articles; it also utilizes a qualitative-descriptive design and Corder’s Error Analysis Model for data analysis. Ten selected unedited news articles written by student journalists were examined. Findings revealed that the student writers have common linguistic errors: mechanical, morpho-syntactic, and lexico-semantic. The findings imply that student journalists are not exempted from committing linguistic errors that may affect information decoding despite being trained and exposed to writing activities. The findings have broader implications as student journalists may serve as representatives of English language learners in their institution or community. Schools may develop remedial programs to provide ample practice opportunities using interactive, technology-based tools for grammar and vocabulary. English teachers may create instructional materials and develop community extension and outreach programs to address grammatical learning gaps.

Purpose – The author argues for the use of unedited, fixed-camera-position video footage in relationally responsive research grounded in Bakhtinian dialogic theory. The purpose of this paper is to offer an empirical example of such a use, and shows how this contrasts with an ethnomethodological interactionist use of similar types of video footage. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical material is taken from an ethnographic study of a project group in the UK, in which video is used alongside other data during the fieldwork period. Findings – The author proposes that the audio-visual detail of social interaction and the sense of experiential immersion upon re-viewing can provide a “talking back” dialogic potential for video recordings, that helps to show multiple narratives in social interaction other than the researcher’s original interpretation, and that points to new ways to engage with research participants. Research limitations/implications – The paper focuses specifically on unedited video footage that is generated through fixed-camera positions. It is also limited to the ethnographic fieldwork period rather than the textual practices of writing up research. Practical implications – The purpose and positioning of unedited, fixed-camera-position video footage in the empirical study is contrasted with other research approaches to video. Through this contrast, the paper offers methodological support for a way of using such footage which brings out a range of voices and alternative perspectives on social interaction. Originality/value – The paper contributes to the methodological literature by discussing a research approach in which both interactionist and phenomenological qualities of video footage were combined to develop a radically reflexive (Cunliffe, 2003) purpose for video in relational research.

Abstract We recently discovered that human neutrophils express immunomodulatory glycoproteins carrying unusual and highly truncated paucimannosidic N-glycans (Man1-3GlcNAc2Fuc0–1), but their biosynthesis remains elusive. Guided by the well-characterized truncation pathway in invertebrates and plants in which the N-acetyl-β-D-hexosaminidase (Hex) isoenzymes catalyze paucimannosidic protein (PMP) formation, we here set out to test if the homologous human Hex α and β subunits encoded by HEXA and HEXB drive a similar truncation pathway in human neutrophils. To this end, we performed quantitative glycomics and glycoproteomics of several CRISPR-Cas9-edited Hex-disrupted neutrophil-like HL-60 mutants (HEXA-KO and HEXB-KO) and matching unedited cell lines. Hex disruption was validated using next-generation sequencing, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative proteomics and Hex activity assays. Excitingly, all Hex-disrupted mutants displayed significantly reduced levels of paucimannosylation, particularly Man2-3GlcNAc2Fuc1, relative to unedited HL-60 suggesting that both HEXA and HEXB contribute to PMP formation via a hitherto unexplored truncation pathway in neutrophils. Quantitative N-glycomics indeed demonstrated reduced utilization of a putative noncanonical truncation pathway in favor of the canonical elongation pathway in all Hex-disrupted mutants relative to unedited controls. Quantitative glycoproteomics recapitulated the truncation-to-elongation switch in all Hex-disrupted mutants and showed a greater switch for N-glycoproteins cotrafficking with Hex to the azurophilic granules of neutrophils such as myeloperoxidase. Finally, we supported the Hex-PMP relationship by documenting that primary neutrophils isolated from an early-onset Sandhoff disease patient (HEXB−/−) displayed dramatically reduced paucimannosylation relative to neutrophils from an age-matched unaffected donor. We conclude that both human Hex α and β mediate PMP formation via a putative noncanonical truncation pathway in neutrophils.

Background: Anonymized videotaped endoscopic procedures can be used for the assessment of surgical competence, but a reliable non-procedure-specific scoring system is needed for gynaecology. Objectives: To design and evaluate the validity of the Generic Laparoscopic Video Scoring System (GLVS), a novel tool in the assessment of various gynaecological laparoscopic procedures. Materials and methods: Seventeen anonymized unedited video recordings of various gynaecological laparoscopic procedures and the 4-minute-long edited versions of the same videos were independently scored by two experts, twice, using GLVS. Main outcome measures: Internal consistency reliability, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability of GLVS. We also compared the scored achieved by edited videos with those of the full-length version of the same videos. Results: The mean score achieved by 4-minute-long edited videos was similar to that of the unedited version (p= 0.13 - 0.19). There was excellent correlation between the pooled scores for edited and unedited versions (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.86). GLVS had excellent internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha 0.92-0.97). Test-retest and inter-rater reliability were generally better for edited 4-minute-long videos compared to their full-length version. Test-retest reliability for edited videos was excellent for scorer 1 and good for scorer 2 with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.88 and 0.62 respectively. Inter-rater reliability was good for edited videos (ICC=0.64) but poor for full-length versions (ICC= -0.24). Conclusion: GLVS allows for objective surgical skills assessment using anonymized shortened self-edited videos of basic gynaecological laparoscopic procedures. Shortened video clips of procedures seem to be representative of their full-length version for the assessment of surgical skills. What’s new? We devised and undertook a validation study for a novel tool to assess surgical skills using surgical video clips. We believe this addition clearly delineates the unique contributions of our study.

Abstract The process of cancer immunoediting generates a repertoire of cancer cells that can persist in immune competent hosts. In its most complex form, this process begins with the elimination of highly immunogenic unedited tumor cells followed by the eventual escape of less immunogenic, edited cells. However, it is not known whether editing can also change the global gene expression profile of developing tumor cells. Here we show using a gene microarray study that the novel cytokine interleukin 17D (IL-17D) is highly expressed in certain unedited but not edited mouse tumor cell lines or certain human tumors. Moreover, forced expression of IL-17D in edited tumor cells induced rejection by stimulating monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1, aka CCL2) production from tumor endothelial cells leading to the recruitment of natural killer (NK) cells. We go on to show that NK cells can promote the accumulation of M1-type macrophages. Altogether, these results identify IL-17D as a novel cytokine and describe one mechanism by which IL-17D can induce tumor rejection.

AbstractThis article presents the critical edition of eight hitherto unpublished poems by Manuel Philes together with a translation and a commentary. The poems are verse letters addressed to various high-ranking individuals. Poem 1 is addressed to the emperor, whose power is emphasised in a request to help Philes escape from his misery. Poem 2 is a fragment likewise addressed to the emperor. Poem 3 is a consolatory poem for a father whose son has died. In poem 4, Philes addresses a patron whose wife hurried to Constantinople after she had become the object of hostility of unknown people. Poem 5 is addressed to the month of August and deals with the return of a benefactor of Philes to Constantinople. In poem 6, Philes writes on behalf of an unnamed banker and asks the megas dioiketes Kabasilas to judge the latter justly. Poems 7 and 8 are tetrasticha including a request for wine.
