ABSTRACT - Screening for parasites in Exotic Mammals attended at the Veterinary School Hospital of FMV-ULisbon - The existence of exotic animals as pets is an increasing reality, namely in Portugal (Ferreira 2017). Small exotic mammals are an example of this, as they have numerous characteristics that make them excellent companion animals. Thus, it is essential to acquire more knowledge about these species, namely in the area of parasitology, since they may be carriers of parasites with zoonotic potential, representing a risk to public health. The aim of this study was to perform a screening for parasites in exotic mammals observed at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the FMV-ULisbon and, thus, to estimate their prevalence in these animals. Samples were taken from 74 animals, namely rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, chinchillas and a hamster. Samples of fur, skin for ectoparasites, and feces for gastrointestinal and pulmonary parasites were collected. Necropsy was also performed on animals that died during the period in which the study ran. The preparations were observed under an optical microscope and, subsequently, a statistical analysis of the results was performed. Regarding ectoparasites, in rabbits (n = 37) Cheyletiella parasitovorax (10.81%), Leporacarus gibbus (8.11%) and Psoroptes cuniculi (2.70%) were observed. In guinea pigs (n = 19), Chirodiscoides caviae (15.79%) and Gliricola porcelli (5.26%) were detected. In ferrets (n = 8) and rats (n = 6), Otodectes cynotis (12.5%) and Polyplax spinulosa (16.67%) were observed, respectively. In the only hamster sampled, Ornithonyssus bacoti (100%) was detected. In chinchillas (n = 3) ectoparasites were not observed. As for the presence of gastrointestinal parasites, only Passalurus ambiguus (2.70%) was detected in rabbits (n = 37). No pulmonary parasites were found in any animal. With regard to prevention, 51.35% of the animals did not receive external deworming and 64.86% received internal deworming. In conclusion, the most parasitized specie was the rabbit. The majority of ectoparasites found in this species (C. parasitovorax and L. gibbus), as well as the mite found in the hamster (O. bacoti), have zoonotic potential, which highlights the importance of adopting care in handling these animals as well as a correct deworming.

Geraldes, Catarina da Silva. "Evaluation of a biocide used in the Biological Isolation and Containment Unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the FMV-ULisboa." Master's thesis, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/21176.
Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a rising problem worldwide. The best way of coping with these HAIs is through infection tracking and surveillance systems combined with prevention strategies namely efficient disinfection protocols. These considerations, associated with increasing reports about reductions in biocide susceptibility and development of cross-resistance to antimicrobials, emphasise the need of identifying how different factors can influence a biocide’s efficiency. In this study, 29 bacterial isolates (E. coli n=3, Pseudomonas spp. n=2, Enterococcus spp. n=23 and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius n=1), obtained from environmental samples collected from the Biological Isolation and Containment Unit (BICU), of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, were characterized regarding their antimicrobial susceptibility profile. From these isolates, 13 were further selected to investigate their susceptibility to Virkon® S, with and without the presence of organic matter. After this determination, 7 isolates (all enterococci) were submitted to sub-lethal concentrations of this formulation and, subsequently, new antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were determined. Fourteen of the 29 isolates (48.3%), all previously identified as enterococci, were classified as Multi-Drug Resistant. Concerning Virkon® S’s susceptibility in the absence of organic matter, the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of this biocide regarding all isolates was lower than the concentration regularly used. However, when organic matter was added, MBC values experienced a significant rise. After submission to sub-lethal concentrations of Virkon® S, 4 enterococci presented a phenotypic change in their susceptibility towards gentamicin. Virkon® S also presented higher MBC values in the presence of low concentrations of organic matter, but no rise in these values was observed in assays without interfering substance. Virkon® S proved to be an efficient formulation in eliminating the bacterial isolates collected from the BICU. However, organic matter may impair this efficiency, which reinforces the importance of proper sanitization before disinfection procedures. The changes observed in antimicrobial susceptibility profile may be due to a stress induced response, promoted by the sub-lethal concentration of Virkon® S and not necessarily due to the occurrence of mutations or other alterations in the isolates’ genome.

ABSTRACT - PREVENTING NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS: BACTERIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF HOSPITAL SURFACES OF THE BIOLOGICAL ISOLATION AND CONTAINMENT UNIT OF THE TEACHING HOSPITAL OF FMV-ULISBOA - The Biological Isolation and Containment Unit (BICU) is a subunit of the Teaching Hospital of FMV-ULisboa, for the admission of animals with confirmed infectious diseases or under clinical suspicion and waiting for a diagnosis. As a high-risk environment for the transmission of infectious agents, it is extremely important to implement programs for the surveillance of nosocomial infections in these facilities. The purpose of this study was to identify the BICU environmental surfaces with a higher bacterial contamination level and to implement corrective actions on their cleaning and disinfection protocols. For that, swab samples were collected from selected environmental surfaces in 3 different areas of the isolation unit, to evaluate the total aerobic bacteria load and investigate the presence of 4 nosocomial microorganisms: vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, 3rd generation cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli and carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Subsequently, new disinfection protocols were implemented, and their effectiveness evaluated. Bacterial quantification was performed by using a non-selective media, while specific selective media were used for the isolation of the target bacteria. Isolates were identified based on their macro and microscopic characteristics and their biochemical profile. The quantitative evaluation revealed that the cages, sponge, and telephone were the surfaces with the highest bacterial load in the isolation, preparatory and worker’s rooms, respectively. Regarding the 4 pathogens investigated, Enterococcus spp. were the most frequently isolated (11.3%), followed by E. coli (1.5%) and P. aeruginosa (1.5%). It was not possible to isolate any of the target bacteria, although one of the P. aeruginosa isolates was resistant to imipenem. In the end, new cleaning and disinfection protocols were implemented, which proved to be effective in reducing bacterial counts by 99.99% in cages and the sponge, and by 90 to 99% on the telephone. This study concludes that the cages and the human contact surfaces were the most contaminated surfaces in the isolation rooms. Nevertheless, the new disinfection strategies were effective in reducing environmental contamination, including by some potentially nosocomial agents. These results may contribute to highlight the importance of infection prevention and control measures, as fundamental tools to reduce the spread of infectious agents in the hospital environment and, consequently, to increase the quality and safety of the service provided.

ABSTRACT - Characterization of infections by Leptospira spp. in dogs admitted to the Biological Containment and Isolation Unit of the Teaching Hospital of FMV-ULisboa in the period 2013-2019 - The objectives of this study were to identify possible risk factors, prognostic indicators, and factors that seemed to affect the length of hospital stay, through the epidemiological description, the diagnostic methods, the therapy, and the clinical, laboratory and imaging changes, in dogs positive for leptospirosis and admitted to the Biological Containment and Isolation Unit of the Teaching Hospital (BCIU). The medical histories of 150 dogs were consulted, with symptoms compatible with leptospirosis, of which 55 were positive for leptospirosis, and the remaining 95 were negative, all of whom were hospitalized at BCIU, from December 2013 to December 2019. Most dogs were diagnosed using IgM serology (96.4%) and MAT was not performed in any of the cases. The most frequent clinical signs were: vomiting (72.7%), anorexia (50.9%), diarrhea (40.0%) and hematuria (40.0%). The most frequent analytical changes in the blood count and biochemistry were: increased AST (100%), increased total bilirubin (81.8%), increase in urea (70.6%) and creatinine (69.2%), leukocytosis with neutrophilia (68.0%), increased ALT (55.1%) and thrombocytopenia (51.3%). Regarding ionogram and urinalysis, the main changes were: proteinuria (94.7%), hematuria (73.7%), hypochloremia (63.2%) and hyponatremia (52.6%). Abdominal ultrasound showed more frequently: hepatomegaly (47.2%), hepatic hypoechogenicity (38.9%), renal cortex hyperechogenicity (25.0%), splenomegaly (25.0%), bile sludge (22.2%) and the loss of the cortico-medullary transition (16.7%). In chest radiography, in most cases there was an unstructured interstitial pattern (27.8%) and an interstitial-alveolar pattern (11.1%). The most widely used antibiotics were ampicillin (69.1%) and doxycycline (65.5%) and a survival rate of 50.9% was verified. It was concluded that the risk factors for the occurrence of leptospirosis were the fact that the dogs are adults (between 2 and 7 years old) and the occurrence of greater precipitation (more cases in winter), and as factors of protection females are sterilized, dogs are 8 years old or older, and less precipitation (less cases in summer). There was a worse prognosis in dogs: seniors, hypothermic, oligoanuric, and with increased urea and / or creatinine. Only neutrophilia affected the time to discharge (duration of hospitalization).

The concept of identity in ULisboa (University of Lisbon) follows a standard Identity Management (IdM) based approach. Hence, each user is unique, and at a functional level, in the processes that manages the information and their dependencies and at a technological level, in the infrastructure that stores and manages that information. The Identity Management of each user has different sources: student profile origin’s is Academic System Management based, employee profile is HR System based. Each individual profile is composed by several specifications – based in rules, procedures and systems – that establish the user’s identity status and profile. These two areas have systems, procedures, rules and specific managed information that results on a user identity and a profile. There are also a set of processes and systems out the manage core, that depends on that information to grant access privileges and verify rules. Each ULisboa Organic Unit manages their information in a different way with specific rules and procedures. The objective of this thesis is to develop a system called 'Portal do Utilizador' and deploy it on the Central Services of ULisboa, making it available to every Organic Unit, (ex-)student and employees. The “Portal de Utilizador” development was builted respecting some functional and technical requisites required by the ULisboa’s Central Services. Portal do Utilizador will be responsible to manage ULisboa accounts with direct integration of ULisboa IdM.

Cities and their infrastructures have been the main responsible for the development of societies. Cities are spaces of concentration of people, of economic activities, social and cultural interactions, and therefore spaces of knowledge, innovation, and creativity. However, cities are currently facing great challenges, some of them never experienced, eg. climate change, poverty, segregation and social exclusion, aging, soil sealing, air and water pollution, noise, excessive consumption of energy and natural resources, production of non-reusable waste, feasibility of green spaces and increasing vulnerability to natural and technological hazards, and a vulnerability to epidemiological diseases. To combat these problems, the widespread and intensive use of technology, namely IT (Information Technology) combined with geotechnologies, e.g. GPS, GIS and Remote Sensing, has been increasingly applied to provide more effective, sustainable and people-centered services and to accommodate their needs. The main goal of this internship report is the development and implementation of a methodology that combines these technologies for a micro-scale geographical study, more specifically we aim to build an intelligent geographical indoor based model to support a more efficient management of the building and its facilities, along with the support navigation system for common users of the building, eg. Students, researchers, professors, and visitants in general. The case study presented is the building of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT-UL), and the model developed and implemented can be operated through multiple devices, such as desktop or mobile computers, and visualized anywhere via web. Regarding the data, we had access to the CAD files of the building's floor plan, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) network infrastructures of the building, 360º images of each unit of the building as well as information about those same units, the opening hours, and the location of security devices through on-site collection were used. As a result of the research and work carried out, two products were obtained: a management model of the building's infrastructures, for technical and private use; and an interaction and visualization model, for navigation purposes. The ESRI technology used for this purpose, was ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Indoors.
