Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a major cause of occupational asthma and rhinitis. Shoseiryuto (SST) is one of the traditional herbal medicines (Kampo medicine) and has long been used as a natural medicine for allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma. Recent studies have shown that the expression and release of IL-33, which regulates the TH2 cytokine response in epithelial cells, is an important step in developing the inflammatory response of the nasal mucosa. In this study, we investigated whether SST may ameliorate the TDI-induced AR-related symptoms in rats and inhibit IL-33 release from nasal epithelial cells. An AR rat model was generated by sensitization and induction with TDI. SST was administered during the sensitization period. AR-related symptoms in rats were evaluated, and IL-33 release was measured both in vivo and in vitro. SST suppressed symptoms appearing in TDI-induced AR model rats, such as elevated serum histamine and IL-33 levels in nasal lavage fluid (NLF)/serum, which were suppressed by SST administration. TDI-induced IL-33 release from the nasal epithelial cell nuclei was also observed and suppressed in SST-treated rats and cultured nasal epithelial cells. These results suggest that SST ameliorates the symptoms of TDI-induced AR at least partially by inhibiting IL-33 release from nasal epithelial cells.

Abstract Rhinitis is often a comorbid and preceding disease in workers afflicted with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) asthma. We hypothesized that TDI rhinitis is driven by an allergic immune response rather than innate inflammation. Global patterns of gene expression were examined via microarray in a murine model of TDI rhinitis and compared to acute nasal exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Histological analysis showed extensive inflammation of the nasal mucosa with eosinophils and neutrophils dominating in the TDI and LPS models, respectively. Effector cell recruitment correlated with expression of chemokines directed towards eosinophils in TDI rhinitis and neutrophils in LPS rhinitis. Genes involved in antigen processing/presentation, lymphocyte activation/regulation, cytokine-receptor signaling and humoral immunity were differentially regulated in TDI rhinitis. In contrast, inflammatory, innate immune and defense responses as well as response to pathogens/biotics were over represented in LPS rhinitis. These results indicate that exposure to TDI results in an antigen-driven immune response in the nasal mucosa suggestive of allergic rhinitis. Abstract Objective We examined perceived workload as it is related to Brief Visual Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R) short-delay and long-delay performance in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and healthy comparison (HC) participants. Method The sample consisted of 39 TBI participants and 54 HC participants. Demographically corrected BVMT-R scores were used to evaluate short-delay and long-delay performances. The perceived workload was measured using the NASA-TLX. Results ANOVA revealed that the HC group outperformed the TBI group on the BVMT-R short-delay and long-delay score, p < 05, η p 2 = 0.05. ANCOVAs controlling for age were used to evaluate NASA-TLX group differences. In regards to the NASA-TLX, TBI participants reported higher levels of physical demand, effort, frustration and overall subjective workload on the BVMT-R short-delay compared to HC participants, p < 05, η p 2 = 0.01–0.09. Furthermore, on the long-delay of the BVMT-R, the NASA-TLX revealed that the TBI group reported higher levels of temporal demand, effort, frustration and overall subjective workload compared to the HC group, p < 0.05, η p 2 = 0.05–0.14. Conclusions Results revealed that TBI participants demonstrated worse BVMT-R performances than HC participants. However, TBI survivors reported higher perceived workload demands compared to the HC group in both short-delay and long-delay of the BVMT-R. Our findings suggest that TBI impacts non-verbal memory performance in both BVMT-R short-delay and long-delay. Also, brain injury may be impacting TBI survivors’ awareness of their non-verbal memory performance. Further work is required to determine what drives the impaired perception of non-verbal memory performance among TBI survivors.

Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) exergames are promising tools for increasing training motivation. However, the use of exergames with mixed reality (MR) headsets remains under-researched. Older adults with hypertension could also benefit from the increased training adherence associated with MR. Endurance and strength endurance exercises are recommended for this group to lower blood pressure. The aim of the preliminary study (n = 22) was to compare the usability and acceptance of two exergames, which represent two different training types—strength endurance training (SET) and endurance training (ET). The developed exergame prototypes were applied in “simulated MR” using a VR head-mounted display. We examined the following outcomes: usability (TUI), intention to use (TUI), subjective task load (NASA-TLX), frustration (NASA-TLX), and presence (PQ). The results showed that frustration was significantly greater in the ET than in the SET (p = 0.038). Presence was significantly higher in the SET (p = 0.002). No significant differences in usability and acceptance were found in the exergames. The results indicate that usability and acceptance are not related to the type of training when utilizing MR exergames. Whether the results are transferable with a real MR headset must be determined in further research.

Existing data suggest that people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) are at an elevated risk for experiencing olfactory impairment. We investigated if smell dysfunction can be used as an MS disease marker. This is a cross-sectional, case–control study. All data were collected prospectively from 171 participants, 115 pwMS and 56 controls (age and sex stratified and matched to the patients), who reported smell, taste, and nasal breathing, and completed the Greek-validated questionnaires for nasal obstruction (NOSE), nasal-symptoms QoL (SNOT-22), and olfaction-associated QoL (QOD). The smell was assessed with the “Sniffin’ sticks” (odor threshold (OT), discrimination (OD), identification (OI) test, and total TDI). We recorded the pwMS disease characteristics (Expanded Disability Status Scale-EDSS, the disease type and duration), cognitive function, emotional status, fatigue, and impact of MS in everyday activities. A TDI < 30.75 (hyposmia) was detected in 30.8% of the patients. The patients’ OD and TDI scores were significantly lower than the controls’ (p = 0.005, and 0.015, respectively). The hyposmia correlated with disease severity and duration. The EDSS score correlated negatively with OD (r = −0.299, p = 0.001) and TDI (r = −0.242, p = 0.01). The disease duration correlated negatively with OD (r = −0.305, p = 0.001, OI (r = −0.253, p = 0.008) and TDI (r = −0.3, p = 0.001). The information processing speed (SDMT) correlated with OD, OT, and TDI (r = 0.302, p = 0.002; r = 0.242, p = 0.016; r = 0.326, p = 0.001). The olfactory function is changing in MS in accordance with disease progression.

Inclusion of tangible user interfaces can facilitate learning through contextual experience, interaction with the provided information, and epistemic actions, resulting in effecting learning in design education. The goal of this study is to investigate how tangible user interface (TUI) affects design learning through the cognitive load. Extended reality-based TUI and traditional desktop-based GUI were utilized to deliver the same information to two groups of students. The NASA TLX tool was used to measure students' perceived cognitive load after receiving information through the two modalities. Contemporary design pedagogy, the potential use of XR, design cognition, today's design learners experience-oriented lifestyle were combined to provide a theoretical framework to understand how information delivery modalities affect design learning. The results reveal that the use of XR-based TUIs decreases cognitive load resulting in enhanced experience and effective learning in design studios.

Abstract Objective We evaluated perceived workload (measured by the NASA Task Load Index; NASA-TLX) as related to Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) performances in monolingual and bilingual traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors and healthy comparison participants (HC). Method The sample consisted of 28 TBI survivors (12 monolinguals & 16 bilinguals) and 50 HC (20 monolinguals & 30 bilinguals). SDMT written (SDMT-W) and SDMT oral (SDMT-O) were used to evaluate group differences. Results ANCOVA, controlling for age, revealed that the HC group outperformed the TBI group on SDMT-W, p = .001, and SDMT-O, p = .047. Furthermore, bilinguals outperformed monolinguals on SDMT-W, p = .017. On the NASA-TLX, an interaction emerged on temporal demand rating, p = .023, with TBI bilinguals reporting higher temporal demand on SDMT tasks compared to TBI monolinguals, while the HC monolingual participants reported higher temporal demands ratings compared to HC bilingual participants. Furthermore, monolingual participants showed higher levels of frustration with regard to the SDMT task compared to bilingual participants, p = .029. Conclusion Our data revealed TBI survivors underperformed on both SDMT trials compared to the HC participants. Also, bilingual participants demonstrated better SDMT-W performances compared to monolingual participants. Furthermore, our TBI bilingual sample reported themselves to be more rushed to complete the SDMT compared to monolingual TBI sample, but they were less frustrated. Meanwhile, our HC monolingual sample felt more rushed to complete the SDMT tasks compared to HC bilingual participants, but they were less frustrated. While we observed differences in workload ratings between language groups, it is unclear if language use, and/or other variables are driving these results.

Nasal fractures account for up to 58% of facial fractures. However, the literature characterizing associated injuries and risk factors for nasal fractures is sparse and is mostly composed of single-center experiences. This study sought to provide a large descriptive analysis and identify associated injuries and risk factors for nasal fractures in trauma using a national database. A retrospective analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) from 2007 to 2015 was performed. Patients ≥18 years of age with nasal fractures were included. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify predictors for nasal fracture in trauma. Of 5,494,609 trauma patients in the NTDB, 255,533 (4.6%) had a nasal fracture. Most were male (74.8%) with a mean age of 45.6 years. Blunt trauma accounted for 90.5% of fractures, with motor vehicle accident being the most common mechanism (27.5%). Closed fractures occurred in 93.0% of patients. Concomitant injuries included traumatic brain injury (TBI; 56.9%), malar/maxillary fracture (27.9%), and open wound of the face (38.6%) and nose (9.5%). Of all patients, 10.1% underwent closed or open reductions at index hospitalization. The strongest associated injuries with nasal fracture included open wound of the nose (odds ratio [OR]: 8.71, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.49–8.94, p < 0.001), epistaxis (OR: 5.26, 95% CI: 4.59–6.02, p < 0.001), malar/maxillary fracture (OR: 4.38, 95% CI: 4.30–4.45, p < 0.001), and orbital fracture (OR: 3.99, 95% CI: 3.91–4.06, p < 0.001). Nasal fractures are common traumatic injuries with more than 90% occurring by blunt mechanism and over half suffering from a concomitant TBI. The strongest associated injury with nasal fracture is an open wound of the nose.

A study was conducted to polysomnographically evaluate the effects of external nasal dilation on sleep quality in mild snorers by examining the amount of sleep fragmentation and cyclic alternating pattern sequences (CAPS) rates. A two-night, open-label, one-way crossover Polysomnographic evaluation, with and without use of an external nasal dilator, was done at the Tri-State Sleep Disorders Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nine snorers, polysomnographically determined to be free of clinically significant levels of obstructive sleep apnea, were studied. CAPS rates with nasal dilation were 28.4% as compared to 37.9% without nasal dilation (p<0.05). We conclude that external nasal dilation reduces arousal instability in snorers without obstructive sleep apnea.

This thesis investigates sociolinguistic variation in the Fijian village of Waitabu. The aim is to investigate how particular uses, functions and varieties of language relate to social patterns and modes of interaction. ·The investigation focuses on the various ways of speaking which characterise the Waitabu repertoire, and attempts to explicate basic sociolinguistic principles and norms for contextually appropriate behaviour.The general purpose is to explicate what the outsider needs to know to communicate appropriately in Waitabu community. Chapter one discusses relevant literature and the theoretical perspective of the thesis. I also detail the fieldwork setting, problems and restrictions, and thesis plan. Chapter two provides the necessary background information to this study, describing the geographical, demographical and sociohistorical setting. Description is given of the contemporary language situation, structure of Fijian (Bouma dialect), and Waitabu social structure and organisation. In Chapter 3, the kinship system which lies at the heart of Waitabu social organisation, and kin-based sociolinguistic roles are analysed. This chapter gives detailed description of the kin categories and the established modes of sociolinguistic behaviour which are associated with various kin-based social identities. Chapter 4 focuses on discourse of everyday life, dealing with the general rules and norms by which Waitabu individuals construct their everyday sociolinguistic behaviour including: male and female speech; greetings and leave-taking; deference and politeness markers; and conversational strategies. Chapter 5 provides detailed investigation of the ceremonial speech event. This event is characterised by special rules of speech and nonverbal behaviour, and is distinguishable by clearly defined opening and closing sequences with set sequencing of components in between. The chapter describes the specific principles and norms governing the linguistic, social and kinesic behaviour. In chapter 6, the decline of chiefly respect language is described. First, I detail distinguishing lexical, grammatical and speech act features of the speech style traditionally used towards the village chief. Then, I investigate the loss of these specific rules and norms in contemporary Waitabu, exploring factors in this change. Chapter 7 gives detailed description of dialect levelling evident in Waitabu. The various dialect varieties and their domains are described. Language attitudes and factors conducive to dialect shift are also investigated. Then follows analysis of how individuals creatively use these dialect differences in constructing their sociolinguistic behaviour, to mark certain contexts and role-relationships as distinct. Focus is on the specific rules and norms for sociolinguistic behaviour in the netball peer-group and in interaction with Indians. Chapter 8 investigates the special patterns of language use which characterise two institutionalised modes of communication in Waitabu society - religion and education. Chapter 9 gives a summary of the Waitabu investigation.

Cervical cancer is the second most cancer in women worldwide with over 500000 new cases and 275000 deaths being registered every year. With nearly 73000 women dying every year, India now tops the world in cervical cancer deaths. India represents 26.4% of all women dying of cervical cancer globally. Cervical cancer estimated to be responsible for about 5% of human cancers worldwide. Currently available vaccines may not provide complete protection against all HPV types as the protection is primarily type specific. Furthermore, the available vaccines are delivered via intramuscular route and require three doses and require cold chain supply which increases the cost of vaccine. Therefore a single dose vaccine delivered via non-invasive route (nasal) that protects against multiple HPV types would be a cost effective and better alternative to the currently available HPV vaccines. The main objective of this study was to prepare HPV antigen loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and Tri Methyl Chitosan (TMC) coated PLGA microparticles and compare their efficacy as nasal vaccine. The developed formulations were characterized for size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, mucin adsorption ability, in vitro and in vivo studies. PLGA microparticles demonstrated negative zeta potential whereas PLGA-TMC microparticles showed higher positive zeta potential. The protein loading efficiency was found as above 80%. Results indicated that PLGA-TMC microparticles demonstrated substantially higher mucin adsorption when compared to PLGA microparticles. HPV antigen encapsulated in PLGA-TMC particles elicited a significantly higher secretory (IgA) immune response compared to that encapsulated in PLGA particles. Present study demonstrates that PLGA-TMC microparticles with specific size range can be a better carrier adjuvant for nasal subunit vaccines. Surface modified PLGA microparticles proved great potential as a nasal delivery system for HPV infections where systemic and mucosal responses are necessary particularly in conditions after viral pathogens invade the host through the mucosal surface.

This paper addresses approximately 15 years of advanced technology programs sponsored by the United States Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate and its predecessor organizations and conducted by GE Aircraft Engines (GEAE). Included in these programs is the accomplishment of (1) the 1,500 shp demonstrator (GE12) which led to the T700, and (2) the 5,000 shp Modern Technology Demonstrator Engine (MTDE/GE27). Also included are several advanced technology component programs which have been completed or are ongoing through the early 1990’s. The goals for the next generation of tri-service small advanced gas generator demonstration programs are shown. A prediction is thus made of the advancements required to fulfill the aircraft propulsion system established by the DoD/NASA Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) initiative through the year 2000.

Sausra – vienas iš daugiausiai nuostolių sukeliančių gamtinių reiškinių tiek Europoje, tiek visame pasaulyje. Dėl besikeičiančio klimato tikslesnis sausrų identifikavimas, jų išplitimo vertinimas pastaruoju metu tampa vis aktualesne tema ir Lietuvoje. Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais sausroms stebėti ir identifikuoti sukurta daugybė indeksų. Vienas iš jų – temperatūros ir augmenijos sausumo indeksas TVDI (angl. Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index), apskaičiuojamas naudojant palydovinius duomenis. Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas – įvertinti TVDI pritaikomumą stichinių sausrų išplitimo ir intensyvumo vertinimui skirtinguose žemėnaudos tipuose Lietuvoje 2002–2019 metais. Siekiant išskirti sausras, apskaičiuotas TPI rodiklis (angl. Temperature–Precipitation Index) – oficialus sausrų identi- fikavimo kriterijus Lietuvoje. Nustatytų sausrų metu visai Lietuvos teritorijai buvo apskaičiuotos TVDI vertės. Šiam tikslui pasiekti panaudoti NASA Aqua palydove įmontuoto MODIS jutiklio teikiami 8 dienų kompozicijos duomenys apie paviršiaus temperatūrą (LST) bei 16 dienų kompozicijos duomenys apie augmenijos žalumą (NDVI). Sausros at- skirai vertintos šešiuose skirtinguose žemėnaudos tipuose, išskirtuose naudojant CORINE Land Cover (CLC) 2018 metų duomenis apie Žemės paviršiaus biofizines charakteristikas. Remiantis TPI vertėmis 2002–2019 metais Lietuvoje išskirtos keturios sausros: 2002 metų liepos–rugsėjo mėnesiais, 2006 metų birželio–liepos mėnesiais, 2008 metų gegužę ir 2019 metų balandžio–gegužės mėnesiais. Nustatyta, kad didžiausią teritorijos dalį apėmė 2002 metų sausra. Ji labiausiai išplito derlingose centrinėje ir pietvakarinėje Lietuvos dalyse bei Pajūrio regione. Vertinant sausrų išplitimą skirtinguose žemėnaudos tipuose nustatyta, kad visais keturiais atvejais sausra labiausiai išplito dirbamoje žemėje arba ganyklose, o mažiausiai – spygliuočių miškuose.

Con el análisis de la performance “Viena says…” del artista alemán Nasan Tur pretendemos demostrar como el borrado no sólo es una práctica a la que se llega a través de la sustracción, sino también a través de la adicción. Y cómo esta práctica tiene mucho que ver con la sobreabundancia de las imágenes y la pérdida de la identidad. Este análisis forma parte de un trabajo más extenso que desarrollamos sobre las prácticas antivisuales en la contemporaneidad. Nasan Tur (Alemania,1974). Este artista para su trabajo parte del entorno urbano, la calle, la plaza, el bar, una mezquita, una escalera, un aeropuerto, es decir, donde la gente se cruza temporalmente, donde los caminos y las ideas heterogéneas se enfrentan. Sus intervenciones tienen como objetivo romper con normalidad e investigar las situaciones donde se infringen los acuerdos. En un primer apartado del artículo describimos como el artista explora la interacción del lenguaje y los símbolos en el espacio público. La obra de la imagen superior forma parte de la serie de un trabajo titulado The city says... En esta obra reúne más de cien frases pintadas en graffiti que toma de las paredes de las casas de la ciudad y las pinta con aerosol de nuevo en una pared interior de su estudio, superponiéndolas en un tiempo muy veloz hasta que todos se tornan una superficie roja ilegible. La ilegibilidad y el borrado de la palabra no es un tema nuevo en el arte por eso un segundo apartado del artículo recuerda aquellos ejemplos donde ha estado presente dentro de ciertas prácticas antivisuales. Frente a la imagen omnipresente el borrado continúa siendo un acto de rebeldía y de posicionamiento que sobrepasando el placer estético se convierte en una táctica de cuestionamiento. En este caso la palabra es borrada y con ella la acción performativa adquiere una nueva dimensión. A partir del borrado de frases cortas como un Te quiero, No hay respeto, Libertad para…, etc. y que en realidad adornan miles de fachadas de todo el mundo, lo que se está haciendo presente es el mutismo de una sociedad. En las conclusiones hablaremos de esta crisis del valor comunicativo y cómo la superficie cubierta de pintura en aerosol de este modo se puede leer como una metáfora de las dificultades que acosan a cualquier forma de comunicación. Abstract The drive to higher efficient gas turbine engines and improved performance is attained by increasing turbine inlet temperature. This lead to the use of advanced material, multi-layered thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and effective cooling technique in a gas turbine blade system. The main objective is to predict and compare the life between an uncoated blade developed by NASA named C3X and a tri-layered thermal barrier coated C3X blade working under four different high temperature operating conditions. The geometry of the uncoated blade was modelled using Catia software. Three layers of coatings i.e., top coat, bond coat and thermally grown oxide with suitable thickness were generated by the mesh offset technique which was applied to an uncoated blade to model the coated blade. Thereafter steady-state 3D conjugate heat transfer analysis (CFD) with k-ε turbulence model by Ansys Cfx was performed to obtain temperature, pressure and heat transfer coefficient distribution on the surface of the blade. Firstly, this CFD analysis was performed using stainless steel as substrate material, then validated with experimental values and lastly, the same simulation model was applied to Nickel based super-alloy CMSX-4 material. The next step was carrying out transient uncoupled heat transfer, thermal stress, mechanical stress and sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical stress analyses using Abaqus for a flight length of 5000 seconds. At last, the creep-fatigue interaction life of the blade was computed by ductility exhaustion concept with morrow mean stress correction method using Fesafe/Turbolife software. After carrying out above mentioned processes for both uncoated and coated blade, an effective comparison was made. A significant decrease in Temperature (up to 127 K) and Thermo-Mechanical Stress (up to 263 MPa) and a significant increase in Fatigue-Creep Life (up to 16.5 times) was observed when TBCs were applied. The result shows that the thermal load was more severe than the mechanical load. The maximum thermo-mechanical stress was found at the trailing edge and fixed portion of the blade.

Retrieval of vertical rain structure and hence the estimation of surface rain rate is of central importance to various missions involving remote sensing of the earth’s atmosphere. Typically, remote sensing involves scanning the earth’s atmosphere at visible, infra red and microwave frequencies. While the visible and infra red frequencies can scan the atmosphere with higher spatial resolution, they are not suited for scanning under cloudy conditions as clouds are opaque under these frequencies. However, the longer wavelength microwave radiation can partially penetrate through the clouds without much attenuation thereby making it more suitable for meteorological purposes. The retrieval algorithms used for passive microwave remote sensing involve modeling of the radiation in the earth’s atmosphere where in the clouds and precipitating rain (also known as hydrometeors) emit / absorb / scatter. Additionally, it has been observed that the rain droplets tend to polarize the microwave signal emitted by the earth’s surface. In view of this, the first step in the development of a rainfall retrieval algorithm for any satellite mission is to simulate the radiances (also known as brightness temperatures) that would have been measured by a typical radiometer for different sensor frequencies and resolutions. Towards this, a polarized microwave radiation transfer code has been developed in house for a plane parallel raining atmosphere (henceforth called as forward model) that depicts the physics as seen by a satellite. Physics based retrieval algorithm often involves repeated execution of the forward model for various raining scenario. However, due to the complexity involved in the radiation modeling of the raining atmosphere which is participating in nature, the forward model suffers from the drawback that it requires enormous computational effort. In the present work, a much quicker alternative is proposed wherein the forward model can be replaced with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based Fast Forward Model (AFFM). This AFFM can be used in conjunction with an appropriate inverse technique to retrieve the rain structure. Spectral microwave brightness temperatures at frequencies corresponding to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) are first simulated using an in-house polarized radiate on transfer code for sixteen past cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region in the period (2000–2005), using the hydrometeor profiles retrieved from the Goddard Profiling Algorithm (GPROF) of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)’s Microwave Imager (TMI). This data is split into two sets: while the first set of data is used for training the network, the remainder of the data is used for testing the ANN. The results obtained are very encouraging and shows that neural network is capable of predicting the brightness temperature accurately with the correlation coefficient of over 99%. Furthermore, the execution of the forward model on an Intel Core 2 Quad 3.0 GHz processor based, 8 GB DDR3 RAM workstation took 3 days, while the AFFM delivers the results in 10 seconds.
