Aortic dissection resulting in lower extremity ischemia is an emergent condition requiring urgent endovascular treatment of the aorta and iliofemoral arteries to restore blood flow to the lower extremities. This chapter describes the management, applications, challenges, and potential complications when obtaining bilateral true lumen access during the urgent endovascular treatment of lower extremity ischemia after an aortic dissection. Most interventions require retrograde access to the true lumen; however, if one of the common femoral arteries is dissected, then retrograde access can be a challenge. Utilizing the contralateral true lumen, retrograde access can be confidently obtained through the true lumen of a dissected artery. This chapter illustrates the steps involved in successfully obtaining bilateral retrograde access to the common femoral arteries when these challenging cases arise.

Chapter 4 lays out the central notions that allow us to identify the singularities of a given occurrence (in ordinary English) of ‘denotes’, ‘extension’, or ‘true’. Key notions are those of the primary representation of an expression, and the primary tree of an expression. The primary tree displays the semantic network that the expression generates. The notions of pathology and singularity are then defined in terms of the notion of primary tree. The chapter argues that the singularity account respects Tarski’s intuition that natural languages are universal. The chapter concludes with a comparison of the singularity treatment of the simple paradox of denotation (introduced in Chapter 2) with those of Field and Scharp. Chapter 4 anticipates the fully formal singularity theory to be presented in Chapter 6.

This chapter presents one strategy for responding to Strawson’s challenge that appeals to the idea that sameness of extension does not track samesaying. If a sentence p contains a context-sensitive term like ‘smart’, then if I say p in one context, and you say p in a different context, and relative to these two contexts ‘smart’ has a (slightly) different extension, it can still be true to say that both you and I said the same thing. If you accept this, then you should also accept that extension doesn’t track sameness of topic. This means that—contra the Strawsonian challenge—it can be true both that the extension is changed, and the topic has remained the same. The chapter shows how this line can be used against various versions of the Strawsonian challenge, compares the author’s view with some alternatives, and considers whether there are any limits to revision.

Chapter 10 investigates the consequences of the singularity theory for deflationary theories in general and disquotational theories in particular. The chapter argues that if we accept the singularity theory, we must reject deflationary theories of truth, denotation, and extension. The phenomena of repetition and rehabilitation (introduced in Chapter 2, and discussed throughout the book) show that pathological expressions, such as Liar sentences, may be successfully assigned semantic values. As a consequence, there are truths from which ‘true’ cannot be disquoted away (and similarly with ‘denotes’ and ‘extension’). The chapter argues that one leading motivation for the deflationist-namely, the role that ‘true’ plays in expressing generalizations-is fully captured by the singularity theory.

The singularity solution is contrasted with hierarchical solutions: the singularity solution does not stratify the semantic predicates into levels. The chapter identifies two kinds of semantic networks associated with the paradoxes-loops and chains-and prepares the ground for a representation of these semantic networks via certain kinds of trees. The upshot of the chapter is that the extensions of our semantic predicates shift with certain changes of context, but these shifts are kept to a minimum.

This chapter argues that certain important lessons about truth can only be appreciated by approaching semantic circularity from the perspective of a compositional semanticist. It explains our need for a compositional semantics for semantic vocabulary like ‘true’. These reflections stress the need to explain, consistently with linguistic productivity facts, truth-value judgments concerning two classes of semantic circularities. The first involves claims like ‘Everything I say today will be true’, made when all other utterances by the speaker that day are true. The second involves claims about broad distributions of semantic properties like ‘A conjunction is true just in case both of its conjuncts are true’. We cannot explain the productive speaker judgments concerning the classes with a theory that gives ‘true’ an extension assignment as part of its semantic value. The chapter explains what shape semantic theories would need to take in order to avoid this circularity.

Chapter 2 articulates and defends the claim that our semantic expressions ‘denotes’, ‘extension’, and ‘true’ are context-sensitive. The chapter focuses on three simple paradoxes of denotation, extension, and truth. Two phenomena emerge as we reason through these paradoxes. First, the phenomenon of repetition: in the course of our reasoning, we produce a repetition of the paradoxical expression. This repetition, though composed of the very same words as the paradoxical expression, is semantically unproblematic and has a definite value. Second, the phenomenon of rehabilitation: we can reflect on the paradoxical expression, taking into account its pathology, and produce an unproblematic semantic value for it. Repetition and rehabilitation are explained contextually, drawing on the work of Stalnaker and Lewis (and others) on context-change.

Chapter 9 begins by examining the impact of revenge paradoxes on contextual theories of truth, including those of Parsons, Burge, Barwise and Etchemendy, and Glanzberg. These theories are hierarchical, and so are subject to revenge paradoxes that, roughly speaking, quantify over all levels. But the singularity theory is not hierarchical, and so is not subject to this kind of revenge. This chapter argues that a use of ‘true’ (or ‘denotes’ or ‘extension’) in a given context applies everywhere except to its singularities, and what escapes its reach is captured by other uses of ‘true’ in other contexts. Moreover, any use of ‘true’ applies even to the truths of the singularity theory, since these theoretical truths are not identified as singularities. The chapter concludes that the singularity theory is not compromised by revenge paradoxes, and respects Tarski’s intuition that natural languages are universal, while preserving classical logic and semantics.

This book aims to provide a solution to the semantic paradoxes. It argues for a unified solution to the paradoxes generated by the concepts of reference or denotation, predicate extension, and truth. The solution makes two main claims. The first is that our semantic expressions ‘denotes’, ‘extension’, and ‘true’ are context-sensitive. The second, inspired by a brief, tantalizing remark of Gödel’s, is that these expressions are significant everywhere except for certain singularities, in analogy with division by zero. A formal theory of singularities is presented and applied to a wide variety of versions of the definability paradoxes, Russell’s paradox, and the Liar paradox. The book argues that the singularity theory satisfies the following desiderata: it recognizes that the proper setting of the semantic paradoxes is natural language, not regimented formal languages; it minimizes any revision to our semantic concepts; it respects as far as possible Tarski’s intuition that natural languages are universal; it responds adequately to the threat of revenge paradoxes; and it preserves classical logic and semantics. The book examines the consequences of the singularity theory for deflationary views of our semantic concepts, and concludes that if we accept the singularity theory, we must reject deflationism.

The paradox of Wigner’s friend presents a challenge to the objectivity of description in quantum theory. Distinguishing several aspects of objectivity, I address this challenge. Relativization of quantum state assignment to agent situation disposes of the main problem and a residual worry concerning the objective content of magnitude claims about macroscopic records of outcomes. While Quantum Darwinism cannot alone secure the objectivity of outcomes, it can then help to show why claims about them are intersubjectively verifiable as multiple observers examine records of the outcome in different parts of the environment. A recent extension of the paradox shows why even a true claim about the outcome of a measurement is not transcendentally objective in the sense that it corresponds to a reality that transcends all possibility of observational access by the scientific community.

This chapter reappraises the connections between narration and argumentation. It contests the claim that narrative is merely a fictional layer superimposed on the nonfictional content (and, by extension, the true essence) of the essay film. The work examined in this chapter explores some of the ways in which narration can give expression to argumentation. The essay form is inherently fragile, with a particular potential for disassemblage. The chapter focuses on epistolarity as a disjunctive narrative form marked by distance and by absence and on the counternarrative aspects of lyricism, based on its tendency to fragmentation, allusiveness, metaphoricity, formalism, and affectivity. Two long-standing traditions are addressed, the epistolary essay via an engagement with Lettres de Panduranga (Letters from Panduranga, 2015) by Nguyễn Trinh Thi and the lyric essay via a study of The Idea of North (1995) by Rebecca Baron.

This chapter unpacks depictions of US foreign policy in Hollywood blockbusters, franchises, and series, whose content was repurposed and production was often offshored. Vampire hunters perform the racialized warfare of the failed War on Drugs and ongoing War on Terror. Vampires advocate for planetary consciousness after neoliberalism’s ascendancy. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), From Dusk till Dawn (1995), and Vampires (1998) organize fears of so-called Islamic fundamentalists and Mexican border hoppers. Deterritorialized biological warfare also manifests in films that return to the historical trauma of mixed blood via stories of mixed species in franchises like Blade (1998–2004) and Underworld (2003–2016) and series like True Blood (2008–2014), The Vampire Diaries (2009–present), and The Originals (2013–present). Others examine resilience through multiple conquests, as in Cronos (1992) set in México’s federal district and released on the quincentennial of Columbus’s conquest. Meanwhile, the Twilight franchise (2008–2012) christianizes the figure of the vampire and, by extension, the concept of the US secular democracy, but also evokes indigenous rights to land. Films ask us to find a space for empathy amidst the terror of economic and military violence.

Because the magisterial reformers largely rejected metaphysical discourses, is often assumed that the Protestant Reformation had no metaphysics. However, if metaphysics is understood as the ontological relationship between God and the world, how could any theological work not be at least implicitly metaphysical? This book argues that the avowedly anti-metaphysical stance of many reformers is itself a metaphysical position, and that teasing out the implicit metaphysics in their worldviews is both possible and worthwhile despite – or even because of – their insistent denials that they have any such thing. Metaphysics in the Reformation proposes a novel methodology for studying the implied metaphysics of the Reformation, focussing on implied structures of being and causality. It then applies this methodology to the under-researched work of Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499–1562). Analysing four main areas of Vermigli’s theology – his anthropology, his soteriology, his doctrine of the Eucharist, and his political theology – the book argues that in his theology, Vermigli simultaneously inhabits two different metaphysical models of the relationship between God and the world. The book contends that by extension, this holds true of Reformation theology more generally.

Linguistic pragmatism claims that what we literally say goes characteristically beyond what the linguistic properties themselves mandate. In this book, John Collins provides a novel defence of this doctrine, arguing that linguistic meaning alone fails to fix truth conditions. While this position is supported by a range of theorists, Collins shows that it naturally follows from a syntactic thesis concerning the relative sparseness of what language alone can provide to semantic interpretation. Language–and by extension meaning–provides constraints upon what a speaker can literally say, but does not characteristically encode any definite thing to say. Collins then defends this doctrine against a range of alternatives and objections, focusing in particular on an analysis of weather reports: ‘it is raining/snowing/sunny’. Such reporting is mostly location-sensitive in the sense that the utterance is true or not depending upon whether it is raining/snowing/sunny at the location of the utterance, rather than some other location. Collins offers a full analysis of the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of weather reports, including many novel data. He shows that the constructions lack the linguistic resources to support the common literal locative readings. Other related phenomena are discussed such as the Saxon genitive, colour predication, quantifier domain restriction, and object deletion.

If we want to be true atheists, do we have to begin with a religious edifice and undermine it from within? Slavoj Žižek has long been a commentator on and critic of Christian theology. So far, a transparent epistemology has been given for belief and perception. Assuming that is correct, this chapter begins by arguing that transparency must apply across the board, thus giving a “general theory” of self-knowledge. The chapter then sketches the needed extensions for desire, intention, and emotion (using the specific example of disgust). The three proposed rules for desire, intention, and disgust explain privileged and peculiar access in the usual style. Privileged access is explained because one tries to follow these rules, then (minor qualifications aside) one will arrive at a true belief about one’s desire, intention, or feeling of disgust. And peculiar access is explained because the methods only work, or only work in full generality, in one’s own case. The rules are also detectivist, and plausibly economical.

Vagueness is currently the subject of vigorous debate in the philosophy of logic and language. Vague terms-such as "tall", "red", "bald", and "tadpole"—have borderline cases (arguably, someone may be neither tall nor not tall); and they lack well-defined extensions (there is no sharp boundary between tall people and the rest). The phenomenon of vagueness poses a fundamental challenge to classical logic and semantics, which assumes that propositions are either true or false and that extensions are determinate. Another striking problem to which vagueness gives rise is the sorites paradox. If you remove one grain from a heap of sand, surely you must be left with a heap. Yet apply this principle repeatedly as you remove grains one by one, and you end up, absurdly, with a solitary grain that counts as a heap. This anthology collects papers in the field. After an introduction that surveys the field, the essays form four groups, starting with some historically notable pieces. The 1970s saw an explosion of interest in vagueness, and the second group of essays reprints classic papers from this period. The following group of papers represent current work on the logic and semantics of vagueness. This chapter discusses the claim that, if it were true that we ought to do something just when this act would maximize net pleasure, the concepts ought and would maximize net pleasure would refer to the same property. If these properties were one and the same, that would both tell us what we ought to do and explain why we ought to do these things. The chapter shows how this claim is not a defence of normative naturalism. On the contrary, such a claim helps non-naturalists by suggesting how these people could explain and defend their view. Hence, even if normative concepts referred in the co-extensional sense to natural properties, these concepts can be used to think irreducibly normative thoughts, which might be about irreducibly normative truths.
