In Indonesia, the hagiographical book of Shaikh ʻAbd al-Qādir al-Jailānī has many versions of translation. One of it is an-Nūr al-burhānī, a Javanese translation by Kyai Muslih al-Marāqī. Unlike other Javanese translations, an-Nūr al-burhānī is not merely a translation but can be considered a new book, in which the translator added some new information and opinion in it. Therefore, the book is interesting to be investigated deeply to find scientific information about the content of the book, the technique, method, and ideology of translation that are adopted and applied by the translator. Using content analysis, the study finds that the book consists of al-Jailānī’s journey of life, his miracles and teachings. The other findings prove that the translator has implemented various techniques of translation such as calque, borrowing, description, amplification-addition, and adaptation techniques. The translator has tried to make the TT (Target Text) easy to be understood by Javanese people, but he tends to apply literal (linguistic transcodification) method rather than interpretative-communicative (translation of the sense) method. As a result, the TT is still influenced by the structure of Arabic as SL (Source Text) and not natural in everyday use of Javanese language. Thus, it can be inferred that the translator more dominantly adopts the ideology of foreignization than domestication. However, what the translator does is more advanced than the other Javanese translators, who usually use only the word for word or literal translation method. This is the uniqueness in translating al-Jailānī’s hagiography or manāqib.

Translating English songs into Javanese language both semantically and emotionally presents a challenge to translators because regional differences always limits some linguistic and cultural aspects. Here, Pentul Kustik band attempts to provide a good English-Javanese song translation that can help Javanese people to understand the song and popularize it. Low’s Pentathlon Approach (2005) highlights several unique aspects of translating lyrics, which cover the elements of singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm, and rhyme. This study uses Low’s theory and assesses the quality of English-Javanese translation of song lyrics The object of this study is 15 English-Javanese song translation by Pentul Kustik Band. There are 328 data analyzed. The result shows that 223 data (68.09%) are considered singable and 105 data (32.02%) are considered less singable. In the aspect of sense, 142 data(46.30%) were considered having less accurate sense, while 186% data (53.70%) having accurate sense. In addition, 252 data (78.02%) are found to be natural and only 71 data (22.08%) are said to be less natural. The rhythm analysis indicates 123 data (37.50%) uses addition, 115 data (35.06%) uses reduction and 90 data(27.44%) preserves the original syllable numbers. The rhymes found in this study have 3 patterns. First, the translator replicates the sound and the pattern of the original song rhyme into the translated version. Second, the translator preserves the pattern of the original rhyme but modifies the sound used in the translated version. Third, some translations are found as half-rhymed or unrhymed free verses.

The goal of this study is to outline the translation strategies used in The Dancer, the translation of Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk. Novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk was originally published in Bahasa Indonesia. The Javanese terms found in the novel are essential to reveal further. The translator faces a significant challenge in transferring Javanese cultural terms into English. This research is a descriptive-qualitative study that uses documents in both of the novels as data sources. The documents are a novel entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and its English translation. The data includes linguistic and statistical data in translation. The linguistic data was collected through data analysis and translation. The result is the use of the techniques such as borrowing, calque, transposition, description, generalization, compensation, and established equivalence are all translation techniques. Borrowing and calque are used to translate words into words, which is a characteristic in translating. Transposition and description are phrase to-phrase translations. For word to phrase, there are description and generalization, as well as phrase to word found in established equivalence technique.

Local wisdom stood as a cornerstone of Indonesia's cultural richness. Regrettably, this invaluable asset, particularly in the form of "translation products," was overlooked and underappreciated. Despite Indonesia boasting a substantial collection of Arabic religious texts translated into Javanese, utilizing the pegon script, these Arabic-Javanese texts demanded preservation, scholarly exploration, and development grounded in specific theoretical frameworks. This research undertook a comparative analysis of "cultural terms" within religious texts, focusing on al-Hikam aphorisms translated from Arabic (L1) into both Indonesian and Javanese (L2). The primary objective was to dissect and analyze the local wisdom and Islamic Sufism moral values embedded in al-Hikam aphorisms through translation. The study drew on translations of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from carefully selected sources related to cultural terms, including books and various Arabic-Javanese translation dictionaries. Employing a purposive sampling method, data collection followed a meticulous process. Qualitative data analysis unfolded through four pivotal stages: (1) domain analysis, (2) taxonomy analysis, (3) componential analysis, and (4) cultural theme analysis. The findings, gleaned from lexicography study and semantic analysis of translation, revealed the existence of two translation ideologies shaping cultural terms in Arabic-Javanese religious texts: domestication ideology and foreignization ideology. This research underscored that translation products were inseparable from the ideological dimensions of foreignization and domestication. Foreignization endeavored to assimilate source language elements into the target language, while domestication integrated original components with local elements. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of how foreignization and domestication shaped the depiction of local wisdom in Arabic-Javanese religious texts.

Interlinear translations from Arabic into Malay and Javanese have been produced in Southeast Asia since at least the sixteenth century. Such translations included an Arabic original with its lines spaced out on the page and a word for word translation appearing between the lines, attempting to replicate the Arabic down to the smallest detail. This essay engages with the theme of World Literature and translation by (1) considering the interlinear text as microcosm: a world of intent and priorities, of a transfer of meaning, of grammar and syntax in translation, of choices and debates, and (2) by thinking of Arabic writing during an earlier period as a world literature sought after in many regions, whose translation in diverse forms and tongues had a vast impact on languages and literary cultures.

Most studies discussed puns in a single language or in a code-switching, which can be understood in the language. This study analyzed different puns, in which the readers can only understand the intention of humour in a different language. It aims to determine the types of bilingual puns, the forms and how to interpret them. It is a qualitative study, and the data were obtained through field and virtual observation. This study found two different types of bilingual puns: English-Indonesian puns (EIPs) and English-Javanese language puns (EJLPs). The puns were written in English but the meaning can only be understood in Bahasa Indonesia or Javanese language. The analysis also showed EIPs and EJLPs are bilingual puns comprising colloquial languages of Indonesian people rewritten in English. Syntactically, both are composed of ungrammatical English word orders with the syntactic forms reflected in Indonesian (BI) or Javanese (JL) languages. The interpretation processes involve word-to-word translation and sound pairing translations. The first technique typically involves: EIPs/EJLPs – word-to-word translation – ambiguity. The second way involves: EIPs/EJLPs – sound pairing translation – sound ambiguity/similarity.

This study aims to describe the strategy of translating metaphors in the novel “L'Etranger” into the Javanese “Wong Njaba” by Albert Camus. Metaphor is an expression that is often found in literary works. In the translation process, the translation of metaphors is one of the problems that are often encountered by translators, therefore a strategy in the translation of metaphors is absolutely necessary so that the reader can properly capture the message and impression that the author wants to convey. The data source used is the novel “L'Etranger” and its translation, “Wong Njaba”. The data used are metaphorical expressions and their translations. The data collection method used in this study is simak with techniques of catat. The results show that the metaphor translation strategy used by the translator is that (Source Language) SL metaphor is translated into the same metaphor in (target Language) TL, metaphor in SL is translated into simile in TL, SL metaphor is translated become different metaphors in SL but have the same meaning, and metaphors in SL which are translated into non-metaphorical expressions.

Arabic-Javanese translation is a means of communication between nations as well as preservation of local languages. This research takes interrogative sentence and their translations from Arabic to Javanese. This research aims to describe the types and functions of interrogative sentences in the books of Khudz 'Aqīdataka min al-Kitabi wa al-Sunnah al-Shahīhah (KAKSS) and Al-Huda: Tafsir Quran Basa Jawi, as well as to describe the techniques, methods, ideology of translation. This research uses qualitative-descriptive method and Spradley's (1980) data analysis. Data collection in this study used documentary and sampling techniques then the data was validated using the theoritical triangulation method. In this research, there are three types of interrogative sentences: yes-no questions, 5W+1H questions, and rhetorical questions. The interrogative sentences in this study function as real questions, for example the creed and tawhīd in the KAKSS. Some of them function as rhetorical questions, such as denouncing and denying in the Al-Huda. As many as 65% of the dominant techniques lean towards target language (TL). The translation methods found are semantic, free, and communicative. The translation ideology used is domestication.

The paper discusses feasts, food stuffs and food offerings offered to deities during the ceremony of free-hold establishment-sima-in the Mataram Kingdom in Ancient Java according to inscriptions in the Old Javanese language of the 9th 10th centuries. Food stuffs and goods listed in the text may reveal a common cultural tradition of offerings and/or be formulae fixing a certain amount of these offerings. Not only Ancient Javanese words were used to refer to animals, but also Sanskrit borrowings. The term kumol may mean “a lamb dish”. H.B. Sarkar’s and A.V. Zavadskaya's translations of Old Javanese epigraphy wrongly translate the terms v3as pada and bras pada as ‘unpeeled rice’ but the correct meaning is “husked rice”.

Indonesian citizens have a low level of politeness in their communication, so there is a need to increase the understanding of communication ethics, especially those that come from local wisdom.The purpose of this study is to present inventations, descriptions, transliterations, edits, translations, and ethical analysis of communication in the manuscript Wicara Dora tuwin Wicara Temen tumrap ing dalem Sasrawungan (for further abbreviation WDWTS). The method employed is the analysis of the document using a philology approach and communication with the research object of text and manuscript WDWTS. The result of this research is that only 1 copy of WDWTS manuscript was found, namely PNRI collection with codex number NB 1090, description of manuscript and text, script transfer from Javanese script to Latin script by correcting 6 word writing, editing 2 words with a single script, translation of text from Javanese to Indonesian with 1 translator's note, and knowledge of text content regarding Javanese views on communication ethics, including (1) communication must be correct, which is the real message; (2) communication must be precise, which is message conveyed according to the situation and context; and (3) communication must be helpful, which is message being delivered contains substance. In 1899 C.T. van Deventer, a progressive Liberal from the Netherlands East Indies, published an article in the Dutch reviewDe Gidstitled ‘Een Eereschuld’ (‘A Debt of Honour’). The Dutch wordschuld, however, has two different translations in English: debt and guilt. Van Deventer meant both. Half a century earlier, under the notorious Cultivation System, the Dutch government had extracted hundreds of millions of guilders from Java, amounting to nearly a quarter of all government revenue around the middle of the nineteenth century. According to Van Deventer, this transfer had to a large extent been illegal. Therefore, he argued, the Dutch were largely responsible for the ‘diminishing welfare’ among the Javanese at the turn of the century. They should return the illegally acquired millions and spend them on the material and immaterial welfare of the Javanese.

The most famous manāqib (hagiography) of Syaikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jailānī in Java, is an-Nūr al-Burhānī, written by Kyai Muslih al-Marāqī, a Javanese translation of al-Barzanji’s al-Lujain ad-Dānī. However, this book has its uniqueness and can be regarded as a new book because Kyai Muslih is not only a translator but also a commentator of the book. This article aims to describe the relationship between the book and other text. By intertextuality analysis, this paper finds that an-Nūr al-Burhānī is a revision of some translation books of al-Lujain ad-Dāni that have existed before, as well as constructed by quotations from 30 books, 24 verses of al-Qur'an, 50 ḥadiṣ and some poems. The relationship of intertextuality is indicated by excerpt, expansion, modification, and conversion. The excerpt is seen in Kyai Muslih’s sounding about controversial issues related to Sufism. The expansion is found when he speaks more extensively about the issues he discusses. The modification is shown by shortening a lengthy ḥadiṣ, a citation, and a title of a book. The conversion is seen when he criticizes another opinion he regards as not valid. Finally, an-Nūr al-Burhānī serves as hypotext for the subsequent works. At least, two books in the Indonesian language, namely Terjemah Manaqib Syaikh Abdul Qadir Jailani by Moh Saifulloh al-Aziz and Penuntun Manaqib Syeikh Abdul Qadir al-Jailani by Baidlowi Syamsuri are the translations of Javanese an-Nūr al-Burhānī and not a direct translation of Arabic al-Lujain ad-Dāni. These findings underline the importance of the translator's competence in order to produce good translation works, as is modeled by Kyai Muslih.

This article discusses how the language translation is utilized in the city name riddles presented by Indonesian speakers. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data in the form of city name riddles were collected from three videos on Kampung Inggris LC and Kampung Inggris WE YouTube channels which were uploaded in September--October 2021 using simak and catat method. The data is then analyzed by comparing translations of words or phrases in the other languages involved. The results of the analysis show the use of one-word translation forms, nomina phrase translation, verb phrase translation, prepositional phrase translation, and clause translation from English to Indonesian or Javanese. The translation of these words has similarities with the names of cities in Indonesia. Some words represent lexical translations, but others only have similar meanings or are associated with the word in question. This multilingual game indirectly shows the identity of language users and represents certain geographical areas. This research implies the creativity of multilingual games by language users which can be used to support language learning.Artikel ini membahas wujud pemanfaatan terjemahan bahasa dalam teka-teki nama kota yang dibawakan oleh penutur bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif. Data berupa teka-teki nama kota dikumpulkan dari tiga video pada kanal YouTube Kampung Inggris LC dan Kampung Inggris WE yang diunggah pada bulan September--Oktober 2021 dengan metode simak dan catat. Data kemudian dianalisis dengan membandingkan terjemahan kata, frasa, maupun klausa dalam bahasa lain yang terlibat. Hasil analisis menunjukkan penggunaan wujud terjemahan satu kata, terjemahan frasa nomina, terjemahan frasa verba, terjemahan frasa preposisi, dan terjemahan klausa dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia atau bahasa Jawa. Terjemahan kata-kata tersebut mempunyai kesamaan atau kemiripan dengan nama-nama kota di Indonesia. Sebagain kata merupakan terjemahan leksikal, namun sebagian lainnya hanya memiliki kemiripan makna atau berasosiasi dengan kata yang dimaksud. Permainan multibahasa ini secara tidak langsung menunjukkan jatidiri pengguna bahasa dan mewakili wilayah-wilayah geografis tertentu. Penelitian ini mengimplikasikan kreativitas permainan multibahasa oleh para pengguna bahasa yang dapat dimanfaatkan dalam mendukung pembelajaran bahasa.

Gambyong is a Central Javanese dance form with folk origins. Today, it is performed in royal courts, at opening ceremonies for official municipal events, as well as at other social events such as weddings, performing arts festivals, and the anniversaries of establishments. While gambyong developed within the two court cities of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, it is in the latter where the dance has been more prominently cultivated and woven into the social fabric of today. Infused with the aesthetics and prestige of the Central Javanese courts, gambyong characteristically portrays the elegance, amorousness, and alluring liveliness of its female dancers. This research is about Arabic phrase construction that influenced Javanese phrase construction in classical books translation (TKK). This involvement appears when the concept of Arabic’s construction is translated literally into Javanese. The research was carried out by applying theories of interference and translation. It’s analysis approach with contrastive analysis which is allegedly enabled errors to be predicted from a comparison between Arabic’s and Javanese’s phrase construction. The data were found and collected from several classical books in Arabic language (KKbA) translated by different writers. The results show that Javanese phrase construction (as the target language), particularly, with noun phrases, with adjectival phrases, with numeral phrases, and with prepositional phrases was influenced by Arabic’s murakkab or Arabic phrase construction (as the source language). Arabic has its own concept of phrase construction. The phrase construction cannot be translated into Javanese directly through word-for-word translation or literal translation. Thus, Javanese in TKK became inconvenient and ungrammatical. Arabic phrase construction is flipped around (with noun phrases and adjectival phrases) and prepositions are used and translated improperly or in the wrong position (with prepositional phrases). This research has many implications for further use, such as: for the identification and description of the deviation of Javanese phrase construction which has been affected by direct translation from the Arabic language, and furthermore, to increase the knowledge of those who are learning by increasing the realization and awareness in writing and translating (especially from Arabic to Javanese) about the fact that Arabic and Javanese have their own regulations or patterns which are different then the other language. keywords;Influence; Literal Translation; Phrase Construction ; Murakkab

The manuscript entitled Buku Isi Warna Warni is a manuscript that contains many traditional medicine ingredients such as medicine for fever in children. The purpose of this study is to present edits and translations of fever treatment texts in children contained in the BIWW manuscript and explain the function of traditional medicine contained in the manuscript. The methods used in this study are data collection, data processing, data analysis and presentation of data analysis results. At the data collection stage, field studies and literature studies are carried out. The data processing stage, philological work steps are carried out from manuscript description, transliteration, editing and translation. In studying the content of the content, a pragmatic approach is used. The source of the data used is the BIWW manuscript which is still written in Javanese script and is stored at the Demak Regency Library and Archives Office. The result of this study is the editing of text that has been cleared of errors and the translation of the text into Indonesian. In addition, there is a function of traditional medicine, especially the treatment of fever in children. This function is the function of education on the types of fever that are often suffered. As for the function of knowledge about herbal medicines derived from plants and other complementary ingredients. In addition, it is also described how to mix herbs and effective methods used to give fever medicine ingredients to children. The functions contained in the BIWW text are still relevant because they can be applied as treatment in today's society. This research is a philological study in the text of Sêrat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan. Philosophical studies are in the form of an inventory, description, transliteration, edits and translations of the text of Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan. This study aims to describe character education in the text of Sérat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan by using descriptive research methods. The object of the research is the text of Sérat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan. The way how to collect data in this research is by using a data card which is further described. There are 5 results of this study. First, the description of the text of Sérat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan is still intact andthe letters are still clear. Second, by using standard transliteration, the text of Sêrat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan which reads Javanese script is changed to Latin script. Third, using standard edition text edits, there are 5 words that get edits, then all changes in edited text are explained in the critics apparatus. Fourth, the results of text translation using bahasa Indonesia and the free translation method are related to the context. Fifth, the contents of the text of Sérat Ménak Saréhas dumugi Ménak Sorangan describe 9 pillars of character education, namely: (1) obedience to God, (2) responsibility, (3) wise, (4) respect and courtesy, (5) generous, love to help , (6) courageous, (7) kind and humble,(8) tolerance, peace and unity, and (9) leadership. Indonesia has a variety of ethnic languages, most of which belong to the same language family: the Austronesian languages. Due to the shared language family, words in Indonesian ethnic languages are very similar. However, previous research suggests that these Indonesian ethnic languages are endangered. Thus, to prevent that, we propose the creation of a bilingual dictionary between ethnic languages, using a neural network approach to extract transformation rules, employing character-level embedding and the Bi-LSTM method in a sequence-to-sequence model. The model has an encoder and decoder. The encoder reads the input sequence character by character, generates context, and then extracts a summary of the input. The decoder produces an output sequence wherein each character at each timestep, as well as the subsequent character output, are influenced by the previous character. The first experiment focuses on Indonesian and Minangkabau languages with 10,277 word pairs. To evaluate the model’s performance, five-fold cross-validation was used. The character-level seq2seq method (Bi-LSTM as an encoder and LSTM as a decoder) with an average precision of 83.92% outperformed the SentencePiece byte pair encoding (vocab size of 33) with an average precision of 79.56%. Furthermore, to evaluate the performance of the neural network model in finding the pattern, a rule-based approach was conducted as the baseline. The neural network approach obtained 542 more correct translations compared to the baseline. We implemented the best setting (character-level embedding with Bi-LSTM as the encoder and LSTM as the decoder) for four other Indonesian ethnic languages: Malay, Palembang, Javanese, and Sundanese. These have half the size of input dictionaries. The average precision scores for these languages are 65.08%, 62.52%, 59.69%, and 58.46%, respectively. This shows that the neural network approach can identify transformation patterns of the Indonesian language to closely related languages (such as Malay and Palembang) better than distantly related languages (such as Javanese and Sundanese).

This study aims to analyze the epistemology of "Al-Quran and the Banyumasan Javanese Translation" (hereinafter abbreviated as QTJB) compiled by 10 translators with different scientific backgrounds. This research is qualitative research which aims to: 1) determine the background of the compilation of "Al-Quran and the Javanese Banyumasan Translation" and a description of the social space when the translation is compiled; 2) knowing the source and method of translation; and 3) knowing the contribution of the translation of the Al-Quran in the Javanese Banyumas language in preserving local languages, especially the Javanese Banyumas language. This study found that the QTJB manuscript uses the ḥarfiyyah translation method as well as the ṭafsīriyyah method armed with the Koran and its translation (QTK) published by the Ministry of Religion as the main reference and several classical commentaries and the Banyumas-Indonesian dialect dictionary. The results of translating the Koran into the Javanese Banyumasan language in the form of the QTJB manuscripts did not add new vocabulary to the Banyumas Javanese vocabulary, but QTJB took another form in the preservation of the Banyumas Javanese language by reintroducing vocabulary. forgotten words and almost wiped out from the vocabulary of today's society.

<p>This research analyses domestication and foreignization strategies in translating the Javanese cultural words in Years of the Voiceless novel. The objective of this research was to obtain the most frequent strategies used in altering Javanese cultural words that influence the ideology used in the translation of the Years of the Voiceles novel. This research was a qualitative descriptive method. The data collection was by reading source and target texts with note taking techniques. The method of data analysis used content analysis with a comparison strategy of translated text in the novel and source text. The theory used to analyze the translation ideology was Venuti (2008) while the theory used to analyze Javanese cultural words was Newmark's theory of cultural categories. The result of the research showed that there was an influence of domestication ideology in the translation of the novel the years of the voiceless at the Javanese cultural words. The domestication was the dominant strategy used in translating Javanese cultural words in the Years of Voiceless novel. Therefore, It indicates the translator tend to maintain Javanese cultural words in ST into English culture words in TT.</p>

The use of Arabic script (Pegon) in the Javanese books translated from Arabic has marked a certain phase in the historical dynamics of Islamic intellectualism in Nusantara and Java in particular. By these translation activities, kitab kuning (Arabic books) are no longer enjoyed solely by the elite kyai-santri, but they can also be read by Muslims outside the walls of pesantren. The various themes of the Javaness books translated from Arabic that reach across all disciplines in Islamic teachings resulted in the rapid growing of Islamic discourse in society. Cherishing nature conveyed within the translation books generated peaceful life among Moslems. In terms of educational contexts, these book have been used in pesantren, madrasah diniyah and majelis taklim as suplementary books. Over time, most of the translated books have now metamorphosed into Indonesian edition. However, there is still numerous Arabic-Javanese language translation books occupy modest bookstalls waiting for the loyal and unpretentious readers.

Artikel ini mengkaji teknik penerjemahan yang dikembangkan oleh Bassnet terhadap puisi “The Little Stone” ke dalam bahasa Jawa “Watu Klungsu”. Penerjemahan puisi ini menggunakan teknik penerjemahan interpretasi, harfiah, rima, dan larik secara bebas. Intervensi budaya dan norma tampak kental dalam karya terjemahan ini karena penerjemah menggunakan istilah dalam bahasa Jawa. Hal itu bertujuan untuk menyesuaikan dengan budaya bahasa sasaran dan mendekatkan kepada pembaca target. Hasil terjemahan ini secara harfiah memang berbeda dari puisi asli. Secara keseluruhan puisi terjemahan mempunyai tingkat keakuratan dan keberterimaan yang cukup tinggi. Penerjemah berhasil menciptakan rasa budaya dalam teks terjemahan tanpa meninggalkan makna yang disampaikan oleh penulis asli. This study attempts to reveal the translation method proposed by Bassnet in translating “The Little Stone” into Javanese “Watu Klungsu”. In translating this poetry, the translator employed the blank verse translation, literal translation, rhymed translation and interpretation technique. Cultural interventions and norms are very strong in this translation work because the translator used many Javanese terms. It aims to adjust the target culture and to adhere the target readers. Literally, the translation result in target poetry is very different but in terms of meaning it is more accurate and acceptable. Translator is successfully creates „sense‟ of Javanese in the translation and at the same time he is able to conveys the original meaning of the source poetry.

Indonesian literature is rich with cultural nuance expressed by an author in his/her works. Being translated into world lingua franca would make the literary work read by more people, but surely, it is challenging, as a translator must apply the most appropriate translation strategies. Senyum Karyamin is one of Indonesian literary works that represent local culture and has been translated into English. Based on the analysis, in translating 122 Javanese cultural lexicons in Senyum Karyamin, a translator applied 7 strategies, namely: transference (34 data, 27.87%), omission (9 data, 7.37%), descriptive equivalence (19 data, 15.58%), cultural equivalence (25 data, 20.51%), generic word (29 data, 23.78%), additional explanation (3 data, 2,.47%), and footnote (3 data, 2.47%). The orientations of translation ideology were foreignization (translating 59 data – 48.39%) and domestication (translating 63 data – 61.51%). It can be concluded that the preservation of Javanese cultural lexicon is not optimally executed by the translator because the domestication slightly dominates the foreignization. However, the wide variety of applied translation strategies shows that translation practice is dynamic.

The focus of the study conducted by the researcher this time is on the translator section, the product, and the public's response to the translation. As for the translator, the writer terms it with the genetic aspect, the researcher's product is the objective aspect, while the response of the research community is termed the affective aspect. So that the problem formulations built by the researcher include (1) How is the method of translating the Qur'an and its translation: Javanese Banyumasan?, (2) What is the quality of the translation of the Al-Qur'an and its translation: Javanese Banyumasan ?, (3) How Banyumas community response with the presence of the Qur’an and its translation: Javanese Banyumasan ?. The results of this study are; First, related to the method, this translation is a type of tafsiriah translation or communicative translation. The Banyumas language, which basically does not recognize upload-upload or karmic system, is feared that it will damage the sacred and trenendental nuances of the Qur’an, therefore the translator uses a compromise decision, namely the Banyumas language which adapts ethics. Second, related to the quality of the translation, this translation falls into the fair category. The trend used in this translation is domestication. Third, regarding the public's response to this translation, many have chosen an "easy" level of readability, meaning that the level of acceptance in the community is also "accepted".

Pengapsahan model is a translation model that has long been used by Kiai in several traditional pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) on coastal Java. During this time, the conjugation model is only understood as a tool for analyzing text structures, whereas far more than that, there is a variety of Javanese typically used in pesantren having a social role so that the variety of Javanese is still preserved by pesantren communities. This paper examines the model of analyzing the pesantren books. The study will also look at the formulation of Kitabi Javanese language and the reasons why the variety of Javanese of the pesantren that continues to be preserved and maintained by the pesantren community, as well as how the process of conjugation has become a part of the process of acculturation in Javanese and Arabic in the texts of religious books. The results of this study, First; the conjugation model is a special model for Arabic texts created by Islamic boarding school scholars with various analytical tools in it; Second, the variety of languages used in the conjugation of the book is a variety of Javanese of coastal dialects and it has become a corpus of its language which is called Jawa Kitabi (Kitabi Javanese); Third, the process of acculturation of Arabic-Javanese in the tradition of conjugation is characterized by the emergence of the pegon script, the emergence of Javanese translation books with the Arabic structure of fusha, the existence of mixed code phenomena in the writing and translating pesantren books, both mixed codes of Javanese-Arabic, Javanese-Indonesian and mixed codes of Javanese Krama-Ngoko.

Language is served as evidence of human being civilization. Through language, culture is shared. When a language goes extinct after its speakers are gone, a culture is also threatened. To preserve a language and the culture embedded in it, language maintenance is needed. One of the ways to do it is by translating the language for foreign visitors in a tourism event. This research shows how the Javanese language is translated in a song containing prayer in a religious-traditional tourism event called Ngruwat, in Dieng, Banjarnegara, Central Java. The data were collected and analyzed using translation theory and methodology. The result shows that translating the old Javanese language means learning the language and exposing it to people who serve as language and culture maintenance.

“Cigarette Girl” is an Indonesian television series that showcases many Javanese cultures. This series has been aired globally on a popular streaming platform, Netflix. As depicting various cultural aspects, this series has a clear and concise subtitle translation in English to make the story plot understandable for foreign audiences. Therefore, translation techniques were potentially used to create a good subtitle for the series. In this case, this research aimed to identify the cultural aspects portrayed in the series and the techniques used to translate them. It involved a qualitative approach to produce a comprehensive analysis discussion. Based on the analysis conducted, the presence of various Javanese cultural terms contained in the series was revealed, including mas, rama, ibu, bapak, jeng, mbak/mbak ayu/mbakyu, yu, ndhuk, nyi, cah ayu, kretek, srintil, tingwe, saus, pelinting, sendika, dong, nginthil, monggo, toh, mawon, macak, manak, gusti paringana aku, and dalang. Seven translation techniques were also found to be used to translate those cultural terms. They were adaptation, calque, generalisation, reduction, borrowing, description, and addition.

The aim of the research is to analyze the adaptation of terminologies, vocabularies and phrases from English to Indonesian. The research was descriptive qualitative research in order to answer the research problem definitely. The data of the study were taken from a biography written by Tracy Wright Webster entitled Reflection on Raden Ajeng Kartini, while the translation is done by the author itself. The total number of data found was 75 Javanese cultural concepts. Then, the data were grouped into several culture categories before presented in the analysis. The result shows that there are three basic aspects that determine the translator in carrying the adaptation strategy with the Javanese culture. Those aspects are cultural factor, linguistic factor and the translator's preference. The aspects influencing the translation strategy that the translator carries is language and Indonesian modern history. In conclusion, the translation strategy of adaptation that is carried by the translator is actually dynamic. It is because in translating the Javanese cultural concepts are alternated or even hybridized, depending upon the translator's intention whether she wants to introduce the cultural concepts to the TL reader or not. However, apart from the limitation of the biography of Reflection on Raden Ajeng Kartini translation, the English version is still important for foreigners to know more about Indonesian history, culture and society.

KH. Shaleh Darat is a cleric figure who has a big share in the spread of Islam on the North Coast of Java, especially in Semarang and its surroundings. His father, KH Umar, was a prominent scholar whom Prince Diponegoro trusted in the Javanese war against the Dutch in the north coast of Java. After receiving religious knowledge from his father, little Pious began to wander, studying from one scholar to another. KH Syahid Waturaja was recorded (studying fiqh books, such as Fath al-Qarib, Fath Al Mu’in, Minhaj al-Qawim, and Syarb al-Khatib). Kiai Shaleh Darat studied religion with major ulama figures such as KH M Sahid who was the grandson of Shaykh Ahmad Mutamakkin, from Kajen Village, Margoyoso, Pati, Central Java who lived in the Mataram Kartosuro era around the 18th century. By translating many books of fiqh and tasawuf in Javanese, KH Sholeh Darat conveyed the message of da’wah at the house of the Regent of Demak who was the uncle of R.A. Kartini. From behind the veil, Kartini was amazed by Al-Fatihah’s interpretation in Javanese so that Kartini understood. R.A. Kartini urged her uncle to meet KH Sholeh Darat. After meeting, to the kiai, Kartini asked that the Al Quran be translated. At the call of the da’wah and Kartini’s request, KH Sholeh Darat translated it using Arabic Pegon. The book is recorded as the world’s first translation of the Quran in Javanese. The first book of interpretation in Javanese Arabic Pegon is named Faidhur Rohman. Faithur Rahman’s tafsir book is a Javanese interpretation, written the world’s first pegon. Together with the manuscript Syarah Al Hikam KH Sholeh Darat Al Faithur Rahman kept by the takmir of the Sholeh Darat Mosque, Dadapsari, Semarang. What is interesting about Faithur Rahman is his translation in the letter Al Fatihah which explains how the belief system and tarekat (the straight path) in Islam. Then what are the characteristics of pious people in the beginning of the letter Al Baqoroh. With this Javanese translation, it finally made it easier for Javanese Muslims to learn Islam. The ease of learning Islam is what gives a wind of harmony in religion.

The purpose of this article is to reveal the Javanese translation of the word Anâ Allâh in QS. Taha/20: 9-15. To discuss the issue the author uses a critical content analysis and comparative analysis approach. The findings in this qualitative research are: first, the translators agreed to use Ingsun to translate Anâ Allâh. Second, they use Ingsun for Anâ Allâh because they want to dwell and honor Allah above everything, the Almighty. It is related to their understanding, awareness, and implementation of Javanese culture, unggah-ungguh (honorific speech). Third, they chose Ingsun to translate Anâ Allâh: philosophically, Ingsun is the Essence and Existence of God. Culturally ethically, Ingsun is only used by high-class people. An ordinary man who pronouns Ingsun for himself, shows that he is involved in conflict or doesn’t understand unggah-ungguh. Sufistically, Ingsun is a perfect word that represents a person's spiritual experience of uniting with his God. This research significantly contributes to the body of knowledge on ethical linguistics in religious texts, especially from a Javanese perspective which is relatively understudied by scholars of Islamic studies.

This research aims to produce a statistical machine translation that can be implemented to perform Javanese-Indonesian translation and to know the influence of the main data sources of statistical machine translation namely parallel corpus and monolingual corpus on the quality of Javanese-Indonesian statistical machine translation. The testing was carried out by gradually adding the quantity of parallel corpus and monolingual corpus to seven configurations of Javanese-Indonesian statistical machine translation. All machine translation configuration experiments were tested with test data totaling 500 lines of Javanese sentences. Results from machine translation are evaluated automatically using Bilingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU). Test results in seven configurations showed an increase in the evaluation value of the translation machine after the quantity of parallel corpus and monolingual corpus was added. The quantity of parallel corpus in configurations 1 and 2 increased by 3,6%, configurations 2 and 3 increased by 8,23%, configurations 3 and 7 increased by 14,92%. Additional monolingual corpus quantity in configurations 4 and 5 increased BLEU score by 0,18%, configurations 5 and 6 increased by 0,06%, configurations 6 and 7 increased by 0,24%. The test results showed that the quantity of parallel corpus and monolingual corpus could increase the evaluation value of statistical machine translation Javanese-Indonesian, but the quantity of parallel corpus had a greater influence than the quantity of monolingual corpus

By translating many books of jurisprudence and Sufism in Javanese, KH Sholeh Darat delivered a message of da'wah at the house of the Regent of Demak which was the uncle of R.A. Kartini. KH Sholeh Darat translates the Quran in Javanese using Arabic Pegon. The book was recorded as the first translation book in the world in Javanese. The first book of interpretation in Arabic Javanese Pegon was given the name Faidhur Rohman. In his missionary ethos, KH Soleh Darat was very concerned about how Javanese culture and character education of Javanese people lack understanding in Arabic. Therefore, the effort to translate various books into banhasa Jawa is nothing more than the process of Javanese Islamization which is very accommodating to Javanese culture. One of the books that reveals the Javanese ethic of Sufism is the Syarah Al Hikam Book. This research is based on the consideration that the manuscript includes some of the cultural riches of the archipelago of the past century which until now can still be saved. Therefore, this manuscript needs to be studied philologically and thematically, especially the values of the propaganda of KH Sholeh Darat which provide a wind of harmony in religion. Through intertextual studies this study intends to find the character relationship of Syarah Al Hikam KH Soleh Darat. Through the learning of the Al Hikam book, traces of Islamic thought and the method of da'wah that combines Islamic culture and Javanese culture, accommodating, moderate, between the Shari'a and the tarekat is the harmonization of Islam can be accepted in the multicultural society in Semarang and Java in the 19th century.

The Arabic-Javanese translation method is one of the Arabic translation methods commonly used in Arabic language teaching and learning in pondok pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Indonesia. This method was considered to be able to facilitate students in understanding Nahwu. This article aimed to determine the influence of the use of Javanese-Arabic translation methods in the book of Tafsir Jalalain on the mastery of nahwu of the students and its influence. Quantitative approaches and bivariate correlational analysis were uesed. The data about the students’ mastery in nahwu was collected by using multiple choice test instruments and essays which were tested on 6th grade students of Madrasah Diniyah Islamic Boarding School Karangasem Muhammadiyah Lamongan with a sample of 20 students. The sample determination was based on a simple random sampling technique. There was a significant positive influence between Javanese-Arabic translation and the students’ mastery in nahwu, which was 0.910 on the sig. 0.000 or 0.05. In addition, based on the results of the regression linear test, an increase in the Javanese-Arabic translation score will increase the nahwu mastery score by 1,014. Hence, it could be stated that use of the Javanese-Arabic translation method helped the students in understanding the the rules of nahwu. Based on the findings, the Javanese-Arabic translation method was recommended to be applied in Islamic boarding schools with Kitab Kuning (Yellow Book) learning system, especially for Islamic Boarding Schools in Java.

In Indonesia, the text of the Qurʾan is available in nine different local languages. One of them is the Javanese dialect of Banyumasan, the oldest and most authentic among the local Javanese dialects. This variant of Javanese has an egalitarian character and is free from social stratification markers. This study aims to resolve the problems encountered by the translation team of Terjemah Al-Qur’an Bahasa Banyumasan who had to overcome substantial translation barriers due to the intercultural context. This study uses a qualitative approach. We found that socio-linguistic adaptation created significant barriers during the translation process. Certain topics require a distinctive vocabulary to reflect the original meaning and context correctly. Also, the use of a special set of words is needed to translate proper nouns. The translator’s decision to replace certain non-etiquette words with standard Javanese is to acknowledge the egalitarian character of the Banyumasan dialect in the translation, while yet preserving the original message of the Qurʾan and the intricacies of the Arabic language.

The highest of indonesian musician to develop Indonesia’s song force them to recycle a popular song into two version (Javanese and indonesia). This paper focused in analysing how the process of transalation is and what ideology that was used in transalting these songs. Qualitative is the method that was used in this research. The data of this research is dangdut songs entitile “layang sworo” and ”oplosan”. In gathering the data, researcher used observation and questioner and in analyzing the data researcher used analysing and clasifiying. The result of the analsis shows that the translator used foreignisation ideology in translating these songs. It goes to that conclusion because the characteristic and the use of method in translating the songs. The characteristics are the translator put some word in source language in the target language, the target language text is like a translation text, and the translator almost did not add or reduce the source language text in the target language text. Then the methods were used are word for word, literal translation and semantic translation.

The aims of education in Javanese pesantren is generally to transmit the teachings of Islam. Its teaching system to this day still refers to the Arabic classic books al-kutubul-mu`tabara (KKbA). In order for KKbA to be understood by the general public, there is an effort to translate it into Javanese language by translating the pesantren model or tradition (PTP). The typical translation of Pesantren is done per word according to the order in the source language (BSu) or the Arabic language. The apparent feature of the translation results is the addition of markers to the grammatical unit functions of the source language in the target language (BSa), like Javanese language. The theory used in this research is the Arabic syntax theory which is already well known and written by Arabic linguists. The result of the research about the marker of the grammatical unit function in KKbA is divided into four parts. This division is done to show the uniqueness of the structure owned by Arabic language. The division includes: a) marker of mubtada ' and khabar function; b) the marker of the functions of fā'il and nāib fā'il, c) the syntactic function marker of maf'ūl bih; and d) the marker of an explanatory function, such as maf'ūl fīh, maf'ūl mutlaq, maf'ūl li ajlihi, hāl, and tamyīz. Thus, this tradition of interpretation of Pesantren in addition to acquiring knowledge of KKbA studied, as well as get knowledge about Arabic grammar.

The folklore of the Salatiga legend needs to be disseminated in the archipelago so that these cultural values ??can be understood by people from various ethnic groups in Indonesia using Indonesian. In the process of translating the legend (from Javanese Krama into Indonesian) it is necessary to have an appropriate translation method so that the message to be conveyed in the source language (BS) matches the target language (BT). This research aims to investigate the translation method used in the Salatiga Legend and explore the cultural ideology that affects the translator in translating the Salatiga Legend. In this research, only the translation of the word or phrase which is related to the translation is examined. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with content analysis method. Data processing techniques using literature study, see, and note. To test the validity of the data in the study used triangulation models, namely data triangulation, theory triangulation, and expert triangulation. The results of the research are the dominant translation methods used are equality and borrowing, while the transposition method is not found. The finding, translation methods used by translators in the Salatiga Legend story, especially those relating to the translation units of words and phrases of objects, are dominated by the equality method. In this study also no transposition method was found.

This can be traced through his works which are works of translation, one of which is the magnum opus is the Book of Syarh Al Hikam. Therefore, the teachings of Islam are easily understood and accepted by the Semarang Islamic community. This is as conveyed in the message of preaching at the house of the Regent of Demak who is the uncle of R.A. Kartini. KH Sholeh Darat translated the Koran into Javanese using Arabic Pegon. Therefore, the effort to translate various books into Javanese is none other than the process of Islamization in Semarang, which is a trail of Islamic teaching that is very accommodating to Javanese culture in the Semarang area. Machine translation is one tool of Google that presents various languages to translate. As a translator machine, the results of Google Translate are not always perfectly correct. The result of translation can be called pre-translation, which is still needed to be revised. Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Arok Dedes story is one of the Javanese stories that contain elements of culture. Translating texts which contain elements of a culture is not easy because one region to another have different cultures, so that it is difficult to look for parallel words that contain cultural, religious, social, customs, social organization, procedure, sign language, and ecology elements, and Google cannot translate the term of cultural words easily. This study is aimed at two main purposes: (1) finding out the types of lexical errors made by machine translation in translating cultural text and (2) knowing the most dominant type of lexical errors made by machine translation in translating cultural text. This study was carried out in a population of 553 pages of Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Arok Dedes. A simple random sampling technique was done to select samples. The total samples taken in this study were 30% of the population. The study results are that there are only 9 types of the total 21 types of lexical errors, namely calque, misselection, consonant-based type, false friend, vowel-based type, inappropriate co-hyponym statistically weighted preferences, semantically determined word selection, and preposition partners. The most dominant error of lexical errors is calque.

The challenge of inculturating the gospel with cultural traditions is not new. The presence of Catholicism in Java is quite influenced by Javanese culture, both literature, art, tradition and others. One of the inculturation efforts is the translation of the Holy Scriptures into Javanese, as has been done by Father Soenarja, SJ. Efforts to translate the Bible into the local language pave the way for wide inculturation for the development of the faith of the people of the Bible. So, the translation of the text of the Bible also takes into account the benefits of building the faith of the people. One of the efforts made is that the translation of the Holy Scriptures is not only in language but also adapted to the form of literature that is familiar to the Javanese in conveying a teaching, one of which is macapat. By using C.S Pierce's semiotic analysis approach, the author finds that the Papat Bible has an interpreter and ground that can be used as a mission bridge in Javanese culture. Through C.S Pierce's semiotic analysis, Papat's Bible, which has many choices of diction, can be interpreted through the feelings of Javanese culture through liturgical pastoral efforts for the sake of living the faith of the Javanese.

Based on the results of the needs analysis conducted by the researchers at Pesantren Pelajar Al-Fath Kediri, it was found that there was a need for a companion dictionary. The researchers believe that a companion dictionary containing three languages ​​(Indonesian-Arabic-Javanese) will be able to help santri to overcome their problems in understanding the lessons presented by teachers. Learning at this pesantren uses Javanese translation, that is, the teacher reads or translates the books using Javanese translation (pegon) then he adds explanations in official Indonesian. The students copy that translation as well as the teacher's. The researchers found that most of the santri did not master that Javanese translation well, because they have different ethnic backgrounds and because that Javanese language is not be used in their daily communication, so it become foreign for them. Because of that, the students (santri) had difficulties, especially when they were going to re-study the book independently. This study uses the Research and Development method with six steps from Borg and Gall. The samples are the students at Pesantren Pelajar Al-Fath Kediri, grade 3, academic year 2020/2021. The research problems are: 1) How to make a companion dictionary (Arabic-Indonesian-Javanese) for the book Adab al-Alim Wa al-Muta'allim by Sheikh Hasyim Asy'ari, being applied to the Pesantren Pelajar Al-Fath Kediri? 2) Howa the effectiveness of using that companion dictionary (Arabic-Indonesian-Javanese) for the book Adab al-Alim Wa al-Muta'allim by Sheikh Hasyim Asy'ari, by being applied to Pesantren Pelajar Al-Fath Kediri? The result of this research is the companion dictionary for the book Adab al-Alim Wa al-Muta'allim by Sheikh Hasyim Asy'ari. Based on the assessment of dictionary content experts, this companion dictionary has a high level of quality with a percentage of 86.6%. While the assessment of the design expert is 77.6%. The test results using the T-test which shows the calculation of the value of sig (2-tailed) is 0.00 less than 0.05. This shows that the use of this companion dictionary is effective. This dictionary will contribute in development of lexicography field related to the three languages, and will assist students in independent study to understand the translation dictated in Javanese, considering that most students do not improve Javanese.

This research article is about the translation of culture-specific items or cultural words from Indonesian into English. It focuses on the Domestication strategy and the procedures of oblique translation applied in the translation. The data source is an Indonesian novel entitled Bekisar Merah, which is translated into English, the Red Bekisar. The novel involves the Javanese cultural background, where Islam religion becomes one of the influential settings. This research was conducted with a qualitative-descriptive approach by adapting the concept of oblique translation from Vinay and Darbelnet, the domestication strategy by Venuti, and the culture-specific items by Newmark. The objectives are to reveal the type of cultural words that are domesticated and to locate the procedures of oblique translation applied in translating the cultural words. The results show that the cultural words which are translated with the domestication strategy are of two kinds: material culture and organizations, customs, and ideas; from 61 data on domestication strategy, all four procedures are identified: transposition, modulation, adaptation, and equivalence; and the most frequent procedure found is modulation.

This research -discussed the text of Kangjeng Tuan Ingkang Wicaksana Governor General Otto van Rees (KTIWGJO), it is one of the texts in the archived manuscript of Koepija Djendralan (KD) the collection of KHP Widya Budaya Keraton Yogyakarta. The text was written in Javanese and the form of prose. This text was studied with philology analysis. Furthermore, the analysis of the content text used the theory of postcolonialism and the theory of hegemony. The purpose of this study was to present the edits and translations of the KTIWGJO text so that it was easy to read and understood by today's society and to explain the procession of welcoming and honoring guests at the Yogyakarta Palace during the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwana VII. Analysis of the content of the KTIWGJO text, including analysis of welcome and respect upon arrival of Governor General Otto van Rees; and an analysis of the activities of Governor General Otto van Rees for seven days in Yogyakarta. The pattern of relations was analyzed using the theory of postcolonialism. Through this pattern of relations, it can add new insights into the pattern of hegemony carried out by the natives at that time and prove that not all of the colonized were backward and ignorant parties. Penelitian ini membahas teks Kangjeng Tuan Ingkang Wicaksana Gupernur Jendral Otto van Rees (KTIWGJO), salah satu teks yang berada di dalam naskah arsip Koepija Djendralan (KD) koleksi KHP Widya Budaya Keraton Yogyakarta. Teks ini tertulis dalam bahasa Jawa dan berbentuk prosa. Teks ini dikaji dengan metode filologi dan dianalisis menggunakan teori poskolonialisme serta teori hegemoni. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyajikan suntingan dan terjemahan teks KTIWGJO agar mudah dibaca dan dipahami oleh masyarakat kini dan menjelaskan prosesi penyambutan serta penghormatan tamu di Keraton Yogyakarta pada masa pemerintahan Sultan Hamengku Buwana VII. Analisis isi terdiri dari analisis penyambutan; analisis penghormatan pada saat kedatangan Gubernur Jenderal Otto van Rees; dan analisis kegiatan Gubernur Jenderal Otto van Rees selama di Yogyakarta. Pola relasi yang dianalisis menggunakan teori poskolonialisme. Linguistic data was obtained through content analysis and translation data was obtained through FGD (Forum Group Discussion). The results show that there are two kinds of code switching and three kinds of code mixing found in the films. Furthermore, there are 14 functions of code switching and code mixing used in the films. In translating code switching and code mixing, the translator used several techniques, including neutralization, modulation, paraphrasing, transposition, implicitation, explicitation, compensation, and description. From the results, the researcher found that most of the data are translated less accurate. However, the acceptability and readability aspects are in high level.

Анотація:
The approach of Koran translation using Javanese literature needs to be represented in order to increase the potential for better acceptance of Koran translation by the Javanese community. The purpose of this study is to represent some Qur'anic verses to be translated using several types of tembang macapat, including tembang pangkur, tembang maskumambang, tembang dhandhanggula, and tembang megatruh. The method in this study uses a descriptive qualitative type of Koran verses that have been translated into Javanese based on the rules of tembang macapat, to then be analyzed using a content analysis approach to the rules in tembang macapat, as well as the suitability of the rules of guru gatra, guru lagu, and guru wilangan. The results of this research become one of the alternatives to the representation of how the Koran is translated into tembang macapat, as when translated it needs to contain a translation that does not violate the core meaning of the verse, and Javanese grammar that conforms to the level of use of krama and ngoko language, but still follows the rules of guru gatra, guru lagu, and guru wilangan in each type of tembang macapat.

The Bhagavad Gita is usually called the fifth veda ( pancama veda ), together with the four Sanskrit Vedas, namely the Rig Veda , Atharwa Veda , Sama Veda and Yajur Veda . The Balinese are familiar with the five vedas, and know the Bhagavad Gita as the sixth book of the ancient Javanese version of the Mahabharata epic. The Bhagavad Gita that features as a part of the ancient Javanese version of the Bhisma Parwa is ascribed to King Teguh Dharmawangsa Anantavikrama Uttunggadewa of the Kediri Kingdom in the 10th century CE. He is credited to have been responsible for ordering the translation of the Mahabharata (known in Bali as Asta Dasar Parwa —the 18 parwas). This translation effort from Sanskrit into the ancient Javanese language was dubbed mangjawaken Byasamata (translating into Javanese the works of the sage Byasa). The ancient Javanese version of the Bhagavad Gita contains the dialogues between Kresna and Arjuna about the swadarma (holy obligations and responsibilities) of a ksatriya (warrior) according to his wangsa (social class). A ksatriya was deemed responsible for defending his country, fighting against the enemy, as well as for upholding truth, satya wacana (truthfulness), lascarya (sincerity) and sradha bhakti (devotional service). Keywords: Bhagavad Gita, Asta Dasa Parwa , satya wacana , lascarya , bhakti Abstrak Bhagavad Gita sering disebut veda yang kelima (pancama veda) disamping empat veda yang ada, iaitu Rig Veda, Atharwa Veda, Sama Veda dan Yajur Veda berbahasa Sanskrit. Di Bali kelima-lima veda itu, termasuk Bhagavad Gita yang terdapat pada teks Bhisma Parwa, buku ke-6 daripada Mahabharata versi Jawa kuno. Empat veda dan Bhagavad Gita telah dibaca oleh masyarakat Bali dalam rangka mendapatkan ajaran tuhan untuk memperkuat nilai etika dan moral. Episod Bhagavad Gita berbahasa Jawa kuno terdapat dalam Bhisma Parwa digubah oleh Raja Teguh Darmawangsa Anantavikrama Uttunggadewa pada abad ke-10 Kerajaan Kediri. Raja Dharmawangsa Teguh menjadi manggala dalam penciptaan Mahabharata (di Bali disebut Asta Dasa Parwa atau 18 Parwa) memerintahkan rakawi untuk menyadurnya. Program alih bahasa yang disebut Mangjawaken Byasamata (mengalihbahasakan ajaran Begawan Byasa) yang sumbernya berbahasa Sanskrit kepada bahasa Jawa kuno. Bhagavad Gita Jawa kuno berisi dialog antara Krisna dan Arjuna tentang fungsi seorang kesateria dalam melaksanakan swadharma, iaitu tugas atau kewajiban suci seorang kesateria berdasarkan kelahirannya (wangsa). Tugas seorang kesateria adalah untuk membela negara dan mempertahankan negara, berperang melawan musuh, membela kebenaran, membela ucapan (satya wacana) dengan tulus ikhlas (lascarya) dan pengabdian (sradha bhakti).
