In December 2010, the National Post published an article discussing the rather costly enterprise of state-sanctioned official bilingualism in Canada. According to statistics provided by the Fraser Institute (2006), translation and interpretation represented 15% of the total federal government budget spending allocated to bilingualism, a cost that many Canadian commentators deemed “unnecessary.” Shifting demographics and diverse immigration flows (Census data, 2011) are also having a significant impact on Canada’s linguistic landscape, forcing policy-makers to consider whether the Official Languages Act (and thus translation) would benefit from innovative reform. Using this contextual backdrop as its main impetus, this dissertation argues that translation, as defined and practiced in Canada, needs to be broadened for a number of reasons, including accounting for technological advancements, for the increasingly web-based dissemination of translated materials, and for the reality of evolving markets. Tymoczko (2008) has championed *translation as an open-cluster concept, a theoretical perspective that has found resonance in this project, given that the notion is the central premise upon which three additional conceptualizations (i.e. *translation sub-types) are founded. The first sub-type, intersemiotic translation, is explained at length and constitutes the focal point of the project. Instead of using a Peircean approach, the dissertation develops a model based on visual social semiotics in order to facilitate the application of intersemiotic translation in not only professional settings but research contexts as well. The second sub-type, cultural translation, builds on insights from the 1980s and 90s cultural turn, with a specific focus on the relationship between the representation of Canadian micro-cultures and intersemiotic translation. In other words, the effects of these translation processes will also be analyzed. Finally, civic translation is proposed as a third *translation sub-type, which offers a potential framework for multicultural management in democratic countries facing the challenges of globalization. A case study using content from the 2006-2008 debate surrounding reasonable accommodation—with specific attention given to the activities of the Consultation Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences (also known as the Bouchard-Taylor Commission)—is woven through each chapter, illustrating all three sub-types of *translation. The case study provides compelling examples of why translation practices in Canada should move beyond verbal and state-sanctioned definitions. The novelty and contribution of this research project are manifold: it transcends traditional verbocentric approaches in TS; it responds to other scholars’ claims that there is a lack of case studies that involve text-image relationships and/or explore the role of translation in the news media in a Canadian context; it explores multimodality and its significance for TS in an era of increased Web presence; it showcases a Canadian case study; and, finally, it explores cultural representation through a translation-based framework.

This dissertation seeks to place Anglo-Norman narrative more firmly in its contemporary literary context by examining how vernacular writers in England during the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries borrowed elements of contemporary Latin writings. More importantly, it is a study of the cultural transformations that took place when vernacular writers used material traditionally found in clerical contexts. I argue that by using Latin discourses in their own narratives, Anglo-Norman writers made clerical material more suitable for wider textual communities - including lay audiences. My work develops the research of scholars who have argued that the interaction between vernacular and Latin literary traditions in England during the high Middle Ages needs to be examined more fully. It also complements scholarship which has sought to define medieval translation as a form of cultural adaptation as well as simply linguistic change. Over the course of this dissertation I examine how vernacular hagiographers and authors of romance transform material borrowed from clerical literary traditions. In particular, I explore how Anglo-Norman writers integrated the monastic discourse of contemptus mundi, antifeminist polemic and crusading rhetoric into their narratives. I argue that by transferring this material into their own works, vernacular writers enacted a process of cultural transformation, altering the meaning, significance and purpose of clerical themes, ideas and rhetoric for new audiences. Anglo-Norman narrative was not distinct from contemporary Latin traditions, but neither was it slavishly dependent on them. The interplay between the two traditions was sophisticated, intelligent and meaningful.

The loss in translation between languages has long been debated, and a current issue within Translation Studies is that of the cultural aspect. Using two opposing concepts by Lawrence Venuti; domestication that is used to assimilate the source culture into the target culture, and foreignization that is used to preserve and highlight the foreign culture in the target text, this paper examines how culture is transferred in literary translation between English and Swedish. In order to establish which strategies are used, data consisting of 30 passages from the American novel Dead Until Dark (2001), and the corresponding passages in two different Swedish translations of it, is analysed linguistically. While the first translation is found to show no marked preference for either strategy, the second translation uses domestication thrice as often as foreignization. However, both translations use domestication in 9 out of 10 examples in the category ‘Figurative use of language’, which suggests a marked difficulty in preserving the source culture while translating metaphorical language. The analysis also shows a difference in the way the strategies are employed, suggesting a further division of the strategies into ‘passive’ and ‘active’. The author calls for further research on the effect of such a division.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the different solutions used when translating cultural references. The source text is an extract from The Omnivore’s Dilemma. A Natural History of Four Meals (2006), written by Michael Pollan, and the material that this study is based on is taken from that text, as well as from my translation of that extract. The theme of the book is American food culture from various perspectives, which results in a culturally specific text. The cultural references in this study regard phenomena such as food-related items, geographical places and names, etc. In the translation of these cultural references, I used a combination of methods. The strategies used were Ingo’s complementary addition, Vinay and Darbelnet’s equivalence and adaptation, as well as Newmark’s transference. The analysis of the translation showed that the most used strategy was transference, which was expected considering that the purpose of the text is to present American food culture and the ambition and aim of the translation was to keep as many cultural references as possible in the target text. One conclusion that could be drawn from the study was that the purpose of the text and the intended TT reader are main factors when deciding how to translate cultural references.

This study explores the cultural dimension of translating children's and adolescent literature. Framed within the theories of cultural studies, translation studies, Baktinian dialogism, and reader response theories, this study is three-fold: (1) a content analysis is conducted to identify the cultural and linguistic shifts in the translated books and the strategies utilized by the translators for making those shifts, (2) the responses of the source-text (ST) and the target-text (TT) readers are compared; (3) the potential relationship between the translation strategies and the reader responses are inferred based on the findings from (1) and (2). The expected findings are: (1) adept use of various translation strategies helps the TT readers recognize themes as similar as the ST readers; (2) some interventions may create deviating responses in the TT readers as compared with the ST readers; (3) some unique responses by either the ST or the TT readers may be as a direct result of cultural differences more than the translation strategies. The implication section provides recommendations to publishers, translators, educators, parents, teacher educators, and researchers, and suggestions for further research.

Translating is never about translation word for word of a given piece. Whenever we translate, a series of other factors are to be taken into consideration and some sort of collateral translations are brought along. One of the most important aspects to consider is the audience the text is going to be translated for and consequently its culture. When it comes to translating for the theatre, and for the screen as well, we have even more factors to consider, such as the surrounding scene, some degree of musicality, some gestures, probably a scenography and something happening around. Theatre translation is in fact one of the most complex and multifaced types of translation.
The aim of this essay is to investigate the relation between language and culture, to show what happens when translating for theatre, to explain what is the role of a translator in this field.

Intercultural contacts that allowed for cross-cultural fertilization were made possible through translation. Translation, in the main, has been understood as an activity that requires knowing the source and target languages to achieve the same informational and emotive effects of the source language in the target one. Yet, the search for equivalence led translators to realize that linguistic terms do not appear in isolation; they are part and parcel of a culture. Fairclough's stipulation, from a critical discourse analysis point of view, that language as discourse is invested with ideologies that organize socially shared attitudes, engages language in a complex relationship with social cognition, power and culture. The characterization of language as such leads to the production of a master discourse through which identity, similarity and difference are identified. Within the context of globalization, intercultural translation, particularly between cultures that are unequal politically and economically, adheres to a master discourse of translation and representation through which the other is received, accepted and/ or refused then reproduced. Consequently, source texts and people are transformed into signs familiar to the translating community constructing as such domestic identities of foreign cultures. Drawing on translation from Arabic, and in light of critical discourse analysis approaches, the translation of culture and the culture of translation, the research considers the case of Nawal El-Saadawi. The aim is to explore and examine how the constraints and disciplinary demands of the master discourse of translation and representation affect the translation traffic from Arabic into English. In a rapidly globalizing world, the ethics of translation postulate that translation should create a readership that is open to cultural differences for a true globalization of cultures, and improve cultural relations rather than being a tool for reinforcing and diffusing existing representationsa nd images of one culture about the other

Food is an important part of human cultural expression, and recipes are a way of transmitting the knowledge on its preparation. This dissertation consists in the translation from English into Italian of a sample of recipes belonging to the British and Italian cultural areas and to a mixed “Anglo-Italian” area. The focus is on the rendition and acceptability, for an Italian public, of the cultural elements of the recipes originally thought for a British public . First, the work provides some considerations on the relationship between food and culture. Then, the characteristics of the genre “recipe” are exposed, and useful aspects of translation theory are presented. The recipes included in the dissertation are then translated and each one is presented with a commentary which focusses mainly on their cultural aspects. In conclusion, it is possible to observe that the main problems relate to units of measurement, ingredients’ availability and the need to substitute them or explain their characteristics, implicit traditions in the source culture that need to be explained in the target culture, how Italian recipes and references are treated by the British which need a “re-Italianization” process when presented to the Italian culture, and the need to render the critiques moved to Italian cuisine more acceptable for an Italian public especially in those contexts where they cannot be eliminated.

This thesis studies the effectiveness of existing translation models in the context of everyday translation and proposes a new translation model. The thesis reviews a number of approaches to the process of translation from the Roman times to the present before focusing on contemporary translation theory and the representation of the translation process by means o f translation models. The thesis introduces - and comments on - a number of existing translation models and then proceeds to develop a new model of the process, which aims to present a more holistic view of the process than the models discussed. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the testing of the model. Two very practical tests are applied to the model in order to assess the accuracy of the representation and the usability of the model in the context o f everyday translation. The first test applied to the model has, however, another function. It aims to provide a contemporary readership with a readable English translation of a Renaissance Latin text, the first book of the Instructiones historico-theologicae de doctrina Christiana et vario rerum statua temporibus Apostolici, ad tempora usque seculi decimi septime prior a (1645) by John Forbes o f Corse. This enables a wide audience with very little or no knowledge o f Latin to gain access to the complex theological argument contained in the specimen text. The commentary on the English translation, and on extracts of the German and French translations of this work serves to test the applicability of the model in the context of translation into more than one language. The second test concentrates on the translation from English into German and German into English. For this test, two groups of students from the Universities of Trier and Rostock in Germany were asked to carry out the same translation exercise. The study o f the work received from these students allows me to assess the usability o f the model as a guideline for translators. The thesis concludes by saying that the model has proved successful on both occasions, and by offering suggestions for further study.

Ce travail a été réalisé dans le but d'optimiser le système de traduction in vitro de germe de blé. L'arrêt prématuré de la synthèse protéique dans un tel système est lié à une limitation en oxygène du milieu réactionnel, puisque l'augmentation de la surface d'échange entre milieu de traduction et atmosphère augmente la synthèse protéique. La quantité de protéines synthétisées ainsi que la vitesse de traduction sont augmentées lorsqu'on enrichit le milieu en oxygène. Lorsqu'on ajoute du peroxyde d'hydrogène au milieu de traduction, on observe le même effet qu'avec l'oxygène, on peut donc penser que la stimulation de la synthèse protéique observée est liée aux propriétés oxydantes communes aux deux molécules. Lorsque les molécules oxydantes participent à des réactions d'oxydoréduction, des radicaux libres sont formés. Ces radicaux libres, et principalement l'anion superoxyde, sont impliqués dans la traduction in vitro, hypothèse renforcée par l'inhibition de la synthèse protéique en présence d'agents chélateurs de fer, ainsi que par l'effet positif d'un ajout de système générateur de radicaux libres et par l'effet négatif de celui d'enzymes bloquant les radicaux libres

Target culture is a concept regularly used in Translation Studies but it is not a concept which is routinely defined any further than the geographical location of the target language. In English translation this can be problematic because some translations published in English are produced in one English-speaking country which are then sold to other English-speaking domains and this process of migration might not be obvious from the edition notice of the book. The underlying principle for the production of these translations could be that one translation can fit all English target cultures. Yet, in contrast, some anglophone translations are published separately e.g. as a British translation or an American translation. There has been, so far, minimal investigation into the different ways in which English translations come into existence and, therefore, this thesis aims to address the theoretical gap by creating a taxonomy of translation. The thesis presents new terminology for the various translation types within the anglophone world: for example, a translation can be separate when published independently by both Britain or America, or it can be transatlantic when it is shared by both countries. The existence of transatlantic translation challenges preconceived ideas regarding the concept of target culture within Descriptive Translation Studies. Through textual, paratextual and metatextual analysis of several case studies of each translation type the thesis explores the possible refinement of the concept of target culture per se. The thesis is underpinned by analysis of the work of two prominent Swedish children’s authors: Astrid Lindgren and Sven Nordqvist. Swedish children’s literature was selected because of its proven perennial contribution to the genre of children’s literature and its exceptional success in translation. Furthermore, children’s literature itself presents its own unique challenges in translation because, for this particular genre, the target culture introduces powerful constraints based upon the educational, social and cultural expectations of the receiving language community. However, in the case of the transatlantic translation, it is the initial target culture constraints which will be present within the text. In the second country to receive the translation, expectations regarding educational, social and cultural ideals may vary from the first target culture. Ultimately, the thesis argues that there are powerful constraining ideological forces within target cultures which are visible in separate translation; those same forces may present themselves in transatlantic translation also, but the origin of the ideology behind them may not be obvious. Thus, the thesis aims to change the way we label translation within newly delineated English-speaking target cultures.

A l’Europa actual, els idiomes de l’estat entren en contacte amb una gamma d’idiomes d’immigrants i un conjunt d’idiomes regionals. En aquest context, els encarregats d’elaborar polítiques s’enfronten a canvis en la demografia i en les actituds pel que fa als drets i la integració. Les investigacions actuals que aborden l’aspecte integrador de les polítiques lingüístiques en general passen per alt el paper exercit per la traducció en aquestes polítiques. Aquesta tesi procura aclarir aquesta funció sovint defugida. Amb aquesta finalitat, aquest estudi es concentra en la política de traducció, entesa com a suma de gestió, pràctica i idees de traducció.
La tesi comença amb una revisió bibliogràfica de caràcter interdisciplinari en la qual s’exploren de manera crítica els escrits d’acadèmics en els camps del dret, les ciències polítiques, l’economia i els estudis de traducció pel que fa als drets de les minories lingüístiques. Després d’això es presenta una anàlisi de les obligacions al traduir en virtut del dret internacional, la qual cosa permet prosseguir amb un estudi de cas sobre la política de traducció en el sector públic del Regne Unit. En particular, aquest estudi de cas examina les polítiques de traducció que es reflecteixen en certes disposicions legislatives que s’apliquen al Regne Unit en la seva totalitat i també a les seves regions de forma específica. Tot això es desenvolupa en els capítols que abasten les polítiques de traducció trobades al govern (a nivell local), els serveis de salut i el sistema judicial. Aquestes polítiques de traducció no s’analitzen com un fet en si mateix, sinó per tal de recalcar que les decisions referents a la integració i la inclusió tenen un element de traducció que s’ha de tenir present.En la Europa actual, los idiomas del estado entran en contacto con una gama de idiomas de inmigrantes y un conjunto de idiomas regionales. En tal contexto, los encargados de elaborar políticas enfrentan cambios en la demografía y en las actitudes en cuanto a los derechos y la integración. Las investigaciones actuales que abordan el aspecto integratorio de las políticas lingüísticas por lo general pasan por alto el papel desempeñado en dichas políticas por la traducción. Esta tesis procura arrojar luz sobre esta función con frecuencia soslayada. Con dicho fin, este estudio se concentra en la política de traducción, la cual es el resultado de gestión, práctica e ideas de traducción. La tesis comienza con una revisión bibliográfica de carácter interdisciplinario en la cual se exploran de manera crítica los escritos de académicos en los campos del derecho, las ciencias políticas, la economía y los estudios de traducción en lo referente a los derechos de las minorías lingüísticas. Tras ello se presenta un análisis de las obligaciones de traducir en virtud del derecho internacional, lo cual permite proseguir con un estudio de caso sobre la política de traducción en el sector público del Reino Unido. En particular, dicho estudio de caso examina las políticas de traducción que se reflejan en ciertas disposiciones legislativas que se aplican al Reino Unido en su totalidad y también a sus regiones de forma específica. In contemporary Europe, state languages come in contact with a tapestry of immigrant languages and a set of ever more legitimized regional or minority languages. In this context, policymakers are faced with changing demographics and attitudes about rights and integration. Current research on language policies as they pertain to integration largely overlooks the role of translation. This thesis hopes to shed light on this oft-overlooked area. To do so, the thesis focuses on translation policy understood to be that which is the result of translation management, practice, and belief. Translation policy is not explored as an end unto itself, but rather, it is highlighted to stress that policy decisions regarding integration and inclusion have a translation dimension to them that ought to be considered. The thesis will explore some of the difficult questions in understanding what integration means for linguistic minorities and in the end argue that translation plays a role in the integration of linguistic minorities in the UK.

Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.One of the biggest problems faced by translators has always been the issue of whether a translation should be a free translation or a literal translation. These days, the general tendency is to view a translation as a cultural transfer of information (or intercultural communication) and no longer as merely a linguistic transfer of information. This study took the translation of the applications (columns that deal with life issues) in the Leefstyl-Bybel vir Vroue (LBV), as adapted from the Bible, as subject matter. The reason for this choice of subject matter was that these applications were translated for a target audience (Afrikaans-speaking women) that differs culturally from the source text readers and that the new culture, therefore, constantly had to be taken into account in the translation. It was found that the following theoretical approaches had been successfully applied in the translation of the source text. Firstly, there was the Functionalist approach, where the work of Nord en Vermeer played a significant role. Vermeer’s Skopos Theory focuses, above all, on the aim of a translation and Nord’s instrumental translation on the fact that a translation must communicate successfully with the target text readers in their culture. The LBV is functionalist in the sense that it was translated with a specific aim in mind, namely to empower the Afrikaans-speaking women on a political level and to counter their voicelessness and disempowerment. Secondly, Gutt’s Relevance Theory, and the term “Indirect Translation” in particular, were used. This kind of communication communicates the meaning of the original in such a way that it makes sense to the target language reader in her own context. For example, the metaphors were adapted because the original metaphors would not have been relevant to the Afrikaans-speaking women. New text, that the translator felt was relevant to the target language readers, was also added to the target text. Lastly, Venuti’s Foreignizing and Domestication were used. The LBV was highly domesticated, which meant that the target language values were visible to the target language culture in the translation. This domestication was successful because the translation met the cultural expectations of the target audience. The concept of “Gender and Translation” was also examined. The reason or need for the translation and why the source text had been translated for this target audience specifically, also had to be determined. It was found that women in South Africa had been oppressed for some time. The publisher therefore deemed it necessary to have a Bible for women in Afrikaans. Presenting the Bible to them in a “woman-friendly” way would assist them to believe in their own worth. The source text and the target text were compared and analysed on the macro and micro levels. It was determined whether the above theoretical approaches were successfully applied and whether the target text worked as a communicative instrument in the new target culture. Various reviews were consulted. These reviews and the research in this study indicated that the LBV had been successfully received by the target audience.

The focus of this thesis is the translation strategies used to translate culture specific items in the Lithuanian and English versions of Peter Mayle’s book A Year in Provence. Peter Mayle (b. 1939) is a famous British author, known for his educational books for children and travel writing. A Year in Provence is a book about a British couple who decides to settle in a small village of Ménerbes in France. New people and places offer many adventures while trying to know better the French culture and cuisine. The Lithuanian translation of the book was done by the translator Ina Jakaitė (2008). At first, this thesis analyses the concept of cultural adaptation and explanations of the concept of the culture itself. Translation strategies for culture specific items (CSIs) are also discussed in the present paper. Furthermore, some methods of the translation by different scholars are introduced. Translation strategies for culture specific items in the paper are proposed and discussed according to the approach discussed by the famous scholar Eirlys E. Davies.

Piteris Meilas (g. 1939) yra žymus britų autorius, rašęs knygas ne tik suaugusiems, bet taip pat ir lavinamąsias knygas vaikams. „Metai Provanse“ yra knyga apie britų porą, kuri palieka savo namus Anglijoje ir apsigyvena mažame Manerbo miestelyje Prancūzijos pietryčiuose. Naujos vietovės ir naujai sutikti žmonės kelia daug iššūkių naujakuriams ir verčia ne tik geriau pažinti pačią Prancūziją, bet ir kultūrinius bei gastronominius ypatumus. Knygą į lietuvių kalbą išvertė Ina Jakaitė (2008). Darbe pristatoma kultūrinio pritaikymo svarba ir apibrėžiama pati kultūros konsepcija. Vertimo strategijos taip pat analizuojamos šiame baigiamąjame darbe. Kadangi mokslininkai skirtingai pateikia panašias vertimo strategijas, aptariama jų įvairovė, analizė grindžiama Eirlys E. Davies pateikiamais metodais. Vertimo teorijos yra naudojamos analizuojant tikrinių daiktavardžių ir maisto terminų vertimą knygoje „Metai Provanse“. Tikrinių daiktavardžių pavyzdžiai yra suskirstyti į dvi dalis: tikrinius vardus (vardus ir pavardes) ir geografinius vardus (miestų, gatvių, kavinių bei restoranų, miestelių bei kaimų ir slėnių pavadinimus). [ES] El despegue de la traducción audiovisual (TAV) tuvo lugar dentro del mundo académico con la aparición de una edición de la revista Babel dedicada a la traducción del cine en 1960. Desde entonces, esta variedad de traducción se va adquiriendo una innegable pujanza. A partir de los años ochenta, los traductólogos coinciden en dar prioridad al aspecto comunicativo intercultural de la traducción. A principios de los noventa, se puso en marcha una perspectiva culturalista de la traducción denominada cultural turn o giro cultural de traducción. Durante el siglo XXI, la traducción audiovisual (TAV) ha alcanzado su máximo desarrollo experimentando cambios significativos gracias a los grandes avances tecnológicos y la eclosión de nuevas formas de difusión audiovisual. A partir del último tercio de la década de los años noventa, esta área de estudio ha visto un desarrollo vertiginoso en los círculos académicos. Sin embargo, los estudios dedicados a analizar la traducción de textos audiovisuales del árabe al español presentan un campo bastante escaso.
Con el presente trabajo de investigación, pretendemos abrir el camino para llenar un vacío en tales estudios. Partimos de un marco metodológico descriptivo basado en el modelo de análisis elaborado por Martí Ferriol (2006) que consta de tres parámetros de análisis: las restricciones, las normas y las técnicas de la traducción audiovisual para facilitar la posterior identificación del método de traducción para la variedad audiovisual. El objetivo principal de esta tesis consiste en verificar si las tipologías de estrategias traductoras existentes, y tradicionalmente basadas en combinaciones de idiomas con el inglés son aplicables para analizar la TAV para el caso concreto de la combinación lingüística árabe - español. Para ello se realizó un análisis exhaustivo del tratamiento de los términos culturales presentes en dos películas egipcias subtituladas en español dirigidas por Youssef Chahine Estación Central (Bāb al-ḥadīd) (1958) y La tierra (Al-ʼrd) (1969). La elección estuvo condicionada por razonas traductológicas y cinematográficas. La profusión de términos culturales presentes, las marcas de oralidad que el traductor ha de solventar en el proceso traductor y la distancia cultural entre las culturas origen y meta suponían un gran desafío para el traductor. Desde el punto de vista cinematográfico, el director Youssef Chahine se desmarcaba del resto con una identidad cinematográfica propia y las películas, objeto de estudio, recibieron el reconocimiento de la crítica nacional e internacional, siendo seleccionadas en la lista de las mejores películas realizadas en la historia cinematográfica árabe.[CA] L'enlairament de la traducció audiovisual (TAV) va tenir lloc dins del món acadèmic amb l'aparició d'una edició de la revista Babel dedicada a la traducció del cinema en 1960. A partir dels anys vuitanta, els traductòlegs coincideixen a donar prioritat a l'aspecte comunicatiu intercultural de la traducció. A principis dels noranta, es va posar en marxa una perspectiva culturalista de la traducció denominada cultural turn o gir cultural de traducció. Durant el segle XXI, la traducció audiovisual (TAV) ha aconseguit el seu màxim desenvolupament experimentant canvis significatius gràcies als grans avanços tecnològics i l'eclosió de noves formes de difusió audiovisual. A partir de l'últim terç de la dècada dels anys noranta, aquesta àrea d'estudi ha vist un desenvolupament vertiginós en els cercles acadèmics. No obstant això, els estudis dedicats a analitzar la traducció de textos audiovisuals de l'àrab a l'espanyol presenten un camp bastant escàs. Amb el present treball de recerca, pretenem obrir el camí per a omplir un buit en tals estudis. [EN] The advent of audiovisual translation (AVT) took place within the academic world with the publication of a special edition of the scholarly journal Babel in 1960 which was devoted to cinematographic translation. Since then, this field of translation has been growing rapidly. Since the 1980s, Translation Studies agreed to give priority to the intercultural communication aspect of translation by going beyond the translation's purview of transferring texts or languages to transferring cultures. A cultural approach to the study of translation or "cultural turn" was launched in the early 1990s. During the 21st century, the AVT has reached its maximum development undergoing significant changes thanks to the great technological advances and the emergence of new forms of audiovisual dissemination. Since the late 1990s, this area of study has experienced a remarkable development in academic circles. However, the studies dedicated to analyze the translation of audiovisual texts from Arabic to Spanish remain a limited field research. The present dissertation is an attempt to open the way to fill a gap in such studies. The methodological descriptive framework adopted in the present dissertation is based on the analysis model developed by Martí Ferriol (2006) which consists of three parameters: restrictions, norms and techniques of AVT to facilitate the subsequent identification of the translation method adopted by the subtitling versions. The main aim of this thesis is to verify whether the existing typologies of translation strategies, and traditionally based on language combinations with English, are applicable to analyze AVT for the specific case of the Arabic - Spanish language combination. In order to accomplish our aim of study, we carried out an exhaustive analysis of the treatment of the cultural terms in two Egyptian films subtitled in Spanish directed by Youssef Chahine Central Station (Bāb al-ḥadīd) (1958) and The land (Al-ʼrd) (1969). We chose our corpus on translation and cinematographic basis. The abundance of cultural terms in the selected corpus, the characteristics of verbal communication and the cultural distance between the origin and target cultures posed a great challenge for the translator. From the cinematographic point of view, the director Youssef Chahine stood out from the rest with his own cinematographic identity and the films, object of study, received the recognition of national and international critics, being selected in the list of the best films made in the Arab cinematographic history.

This thesis explores the central role translation came to play in Greek intellectual production under the Dictatorship of 1967-1974, namely its function as a mechanism of cultural resistance. Methodological tools borrowed from both translation and cultural studies are used in order to demonstrate the socio-political dimension of translation as a gesture of great cultural significance. The first chapter juxtaposes the propagandistic discourse and the restrictive practices of the authoritarian regime to the dissident discourse and the progressive ideas promoted by the group of intellectuals practising cultural resistance. This serves to depict the tension created in the Greek cultural field under the Junta, and explains the reasons causing translation to emerge as an effective means of free expression. The mediated nature of translation, allowing those involved in the industry to avoid full responsibility for translated texts' content, is discussed as the most prominent characteristic that turned translation into the publishing product par excellence associated with Greek cultural resistance against the Junta. The second, third and fourth chapters are devoted to three agents of translation, according to the model of patronage proposed by Lefevere. These agents are firstly those publishers who founded new, small-scale, and progressive publishing houses under the Junta, publishing mostly translations and republications of modem Greek texts. The second group were the directors, editors and contributors working for dissident literary journals first published under the Junta, who used translation extensively to infuse the Greek readership with progressive ideas from abroad. Thirdly, the translators themselves, who worked towards producing translations of major texts, contextualizing them in Greek contemporary reality and showing their relevance to the pressing socio-political issues. These three agents are closely examined in terms of their position in the cultural landscape of the time, as are the discussions the translated texts they produced triggered in intellectual circles, both in Greece and abroad. Therefore, this thesis proposes a systematic mapping of the networks of intellectuals involved in translation at the time, and an insight into the impact translations had on the Greek readership. It also offers a selection of close readings of a number of indicative translated texts, which are drawn from the vast corpus of translations published under the Junta, in order to show the potential these texts had to turn the gesture of translation into a dynamic mechanism of cultural resistance. It is by placing emphasis on the work of individuals, such as Giorgos Chatzopoulos, the publisher of Kalvos editions, Dimitris Kalolcyris, the chief editor of TO TRAM, and Pavlos Zannas, who translated A la recherche du temps perdu during his incarceration as a political prisoner, that this thesis engages with the cultural significance translation acquired during the Junta period in Greece, making it emerge as a prominent

Dai Wangshu 戴望舒 (1905-1950) was a prolific translator, working on both French and Hispanic literature. However, his translation work has often been considered relevant only to the extent that it helped him to develop a self-fashioned modernist style in his own poetic writing. Moreover, no systematic study has been conducted on his interest in Hispanic literature, particularly on his translation of Federico García Lorca’s poetry, a project to which he dedicated over half of his professional career but left unfinished. In addition, investigations on Dai have been generally approached from a narrow theoretical perspective that has risked overlooking the social factors that affected his literary activities. This thesis, therefore, aims to reveal the extent and the way in which translating Lorca into Chinese contributed to the establishment and consolidation of Dai’s position as a social agent in the field of literary production in China. The methodology is constructed in an attempt to reconcile a sociological perspective on translation drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory with a more interpretive understanding of literary writing based on the notion of transculturation inherited from Latin American cultural studies. Examining Dai’s translation of Lorca’s poetry from this integrated perspective allows foregrounding the heterogeneity and multiplicity of Dai’s literary dispositions, at both a macroscopic and a microscopic level, without ignoring the social factors involved in his translation practice. By embedding Lorca’s poetry in the field of literary production in China, Dai privileged a particular set of possibilities over the others, both literary and ideological at the same time. This kind of behaviour in Dai can be interpreted in terms of transculturation and observed in various textual domains, involving formal literary elements, discourses and worldviews. Furthermore, Dai’s project of translating Lorca’s poetry, which expanded over a three-decade period, allows establishing striking connections among literary journals and groups at various temporal and spatial locations, each of them associated with different and often competing views on translation, literature and politics. In sum, Dai’s translation project of Lorca played a pivotal role in establishing and consolidating Dai’s position in the literary scene to the extent that his status as a literary figure was more determined by his translation work than by his own poetic writing. Dai’s translation of Lorca involved not only transculturating a specific text-type, the romance, but also a particular view on the role of literature in society that, unexpectedly, positioned him as an author opportunistically committed to the Communist cause. This investigation contributes new evidence that helps to question some long-standing assumptions both in studies on Dai and in reflections on the role of translation in Chinese literature. In addition, it allows arguing for a study of such a role at large without the need to subsume translation to any other sort of practice.

This thesis investigates the way in which cultural elements are rendered in subtitling by analyzing the translation of culture-specific references, such as proper names, with the case studies from three American and Thai films: Annie Hall (1977), Juno (2007), and The Iron Ladies (2000). The structure of this research is based on Toury (1995)’s Descriptive Translation Studies framework. The methodology consists of 1) situating the preliminary norms of Audiovisual Translation in Thailand, which includes the overview of foreign film import and screen translation practice; 2) proceeding to analyse the cultural transfer strategies used in the subtitles in relations to their polysemiotic co-texts and contexts and present descriptive examples; and 3) from the analysis results, comparing the ways American and Thai culture is transferred/transformed to the target audience and explaining the significance. This research aims to take interdisciplinary approach into subtitling, in hope that it will bring more insights about Audiovisual Translation not only as a language transfer, but also as a complex socio-cultural activity, surrounded by norms and many influencing factors. Therefore, the study will combine text analysis and interviews with translation practitioners in order to present subtitling in the real world situation.

It has been revealed in this study that the major problem that the translators are confronted with is lack of terminology in the specialized field such as Health. This problem is caused by the fact that different languages entail a variety of culture. The study revealed that most translators and lexicographers resort to transliteration and borrowing when confronted with zero-equivalence. They regard transliteration and borrowing as the quickest possible strategies. The study discovered that transliteration should not be opted as an alternative strategy to deal with zero-equivalence as users will be led to a state of confusion. The study revealed that communicative translation is regarded as the most fruitful method of translation as it conveys the exact message of the original in a best possible manner. Both the source and the target users get the same message.

This study investigates the translation of cultural features in fiction. It is based on two translations into English of the Swedish book The Brothers Lionheart and its focus lies on proper names, place names, food, and dialect. Acomparison between the two translations is also made. The results showed that there were differences in the translation of proper names, place names, and food. While the overall differences for proper names, place names and food were small, there were big differences in the way some proper names and food were translated. However, these cases were very few, and on the whole, the translations resemble each other in most areas. As regards the translation of dialect, this was completely omitted in both translations.

The idea behind this research is motivated primarily by pronouncements made by (co)producers of English translations of modern Arabic fiction concerning the untranslatability of ‘Arabic’ and its status as a ‘controversial’ language, which presents a ‘hurdle’ in the way of the cultural and literary transfer of modern Arabic works of fiction to English. Is it the Arabic language alone that conditions or circumscribes the translation activity of modern Arabic fiction into English, or are there other socio-cultural and historico-political factors that influence the volume of such activity? In an attempt to answer questions such as the above and to understand and evaluate the extent to which such polemic comments are true, this thesis traces the socio-historical trajectory of the field of modern Arabic fiction into English throughout its phases of development. It sets out to identify and investigate the determinants that condition or circumscribe the translation of modern Arabic fiction into English. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice and its heuristic concepts, to include field, capital, homology and (dis)position, the English translation activity of modern Arabic fiction is examined as a socially constructed and constructing practice and the related individuals and institutions are investigated as socially regulated and regulating agents. The study’s aim is to analyse and interpret the diverse range of practices in this field of cultural production. To guide the analysis of this thesis, English translations of modern Arabic fiction, published between 1908 and 2014, are compiled and analysed both statistically and sociologically. They are combined with historical and archival materials, including several exchanges between various translatorial agents that have not been previously examined. Various factors informing, conforming and/or transforming the field of modern Arabic fiction in English translation are identified and analysed, with specific attention to their impact on the field’s structure and the positions available in it, the capital at stake, the agents involved, the dynamics of production and the volume of activity within the field. In the process of mapping out the field of modern Arabic fiction in English translation, the thesis redraws the boundaries of the field and suggests alternative dates to, as well as a different structure from, the phases identified by Altoma (2005). It also investigates several socio-cultural and historico-political factors that are not mentioned in Khalifa and Elgindy (2014) or other related studies. The retranslations of Naguib Mahfouz’s most controversial novel, ‘Awlād Ḥāratinā, are thoroughly examined as a case study in order to provide further insights into how socio-cultural and historico-political forces function in concert within the field of modern Arabic fiction in English translation. Particular focus is given to how these forces impact the field and its activities—fostering or subverting its outlook—and how they mediate the relationships between its agents and other intersecting fields. Through an in-depth analysis of paratextual elements, the thesis illuminates how (re)translations can be used as a tool to claim distinction in the field of translation and exposes the struggle between its agents. The findings have implications for the fields of translation studies in general, and modern Arabic literature/fiction translation and its publishing trends in particular. They demonstrate that a progression in the production and publishing of translations has taken place since 1908. This is in opposition to the prevailing belief that the flow of English translations of modern Arabic works of fiction has been primarily hindered by the Arabic language. However, there have been fluctuations in the velocity and volume of the translation flow. These fluctuations correspond to various internal and external socio-cultural and historico-political forces that affected the translation production and consumption and, consequently, the structure of the field and its agents’ practices. The evidence presented suggests that, instead of focusing on the literary value of a work, several modern Arabic works of fiction were translated because of their sociological/anthropological significance. This mediated and framed, to a great extent, the way the Arab world was perceived by and promoted in the Anglophone world. Given this finding, translations of modern Arabic fiction should always be perceived within, and not in isolation from, the larger context of their production, circulation and reception, especially in the case of English translations.

Resumo: Este estudo teve como propósito realizar a adaptação cultural e validação do instrumento Attentional Function Index para a cultura brasileira. O processo de adaptação cultural foi baseado em uma metodologia reconhecida internacionalmente, a qual envolve as etapas de: tradução do instrumento para o idioma alvo, tradução do instrumento de volta para o idioma de origem, avaliação das equivalências semântica, idiomática, conceitual e cultural por um grupo de juízes e realização do pré-teste. A versão final do instrumento adaptado foi denominada versão brasileira do Attentional Function Index e foi submetida a um processo de validação com determinação de sua confiabilidade e validade entre uma amostra de estudantes de graduação em enfermagem de uma universidade pública no interior do estado de São Paulo. Para a confiabilidade analisou-se a homogeneidade por meio da consistência interna, e a estabilidade por meio do teste-reste, expressos pelo Coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach (a= 0,89) e pelo Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse (CCI= 0,81), respectivamente. Para avaliação da validade de construto do tipo convergente, utilizou-se a versão em português do instrumento Profile of Mood States (POMS) e para avaliação da validade relacionada com critério, utilizou-se a Medida de Sobrecarga Mental, ambas expressas pelo Coeficiente de Correlação de Pearson. Obteve-se correlação significativa negativa de moderada magnitude (r= -0,64; p-valor <0,0001) para validade convergente e correlação negativa de fraca magnitude para validade relacionada com critério (r= -0,40; p-valor <0,0001). Os resultados evidenciaram que a adaptação cultural e o processo de validação foram satisfatórios, demonstrando a viabilidade da utilização da versão brasileira do Attentional Function Index na prática e no desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to fulfill the cross cultural adaptation and to validate the instrument Attentional Function Index into the Brazilian culture. The process of cultural adaptation was based on a standardized guideline internationally recognized, which involves the following steps: translation of the instrument into the target language; translation of the instrument into the original language; evaluation of semantic, idiomatic, conceptual and cultural equivalences, by a group of judges; and the pre-test of the instrument¿s final version. The final version of the suitable instrument was called the Brazilian version of the Attentional Function Index and was submitted to a validation process, with determination of its reliability and validity in a sample of graduation students in nursing of a public university in the inner part of the state of São Paulo. Reliability was analyzed through its internal consistency and the stability by means of test-retest, expressed by the Cronbach¿s alpha coefficient (a= 0.89) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC= 0.81), respectively. For evaluation of the construct validity, especially convergent validity, the portuguese version of the Profile of Mood States (POMS) was used, and for the evaluation of the criteria validity, a Measure of mental overload was used, both expressed by the Pearson correlation coefficient. One got a negative significant of moderate magnitude correlation (r= -0.64; p< 0.0001) for convergent validity and a weak magnitude negative correlation for criteria validity (r = -0.40; p<0.0001). Of this form, the results had pointed that the cross cultural adaptation and the validation process had been satisfactory, demonstrating the viability of the use of the Brazilian version of the Attentional Function Index in the practical one and the development of new research. The aim of this essay is to identify and discuss possible solutions to problems regarding the translation of certain cultural references in blog columns by the American author Jeff Klima. More specifically, these cultural references are general cultural aspects, swear words and references to people. General cultural aspects include references to historical events, religious festivities, publications, cultural stereotypes and culturally based idioms. I use Vinay and Darbelnet’s strategies of direct and oblique translation, as well as Nida’s concepts of formal and dynamic equivalence. I also use Newmark’s strategies of semantic versus communicative translation, and Ingo’s adaption strategy. I find that there is no universal solution applicable to all types of culturally related issues in translation, but that every case is unique and requires a unique solution. What can be said, however, is that semantic translations and word-for-word translations are rarely applicable when it comes to cultural issues. True for all issues, however, is that the translator needs to be perfectly clear on what the author is saying and who the receiver, or target reader, is in order to begin to explore which strategy is best to use.

Thesis (M.A. (African languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2011The aim of this study was to investigate the problems encountered by translators when translating medical terms from English into Tshivenda. It has been revealed in this study that the major problem that the translators are confronted with is lack of terminology in the specialized field such as Health. This problem is caused by the fact that different languages entail a variety of culture. The study revealed that most translators and lexicographers resort to transliteration and borrowing when confronted with zero-equivalence. They regard transliteration and borrowing as the quickest possible strategies. The study discovered that transliteration should not be opted as an alternative strategy to deal with zero-equivalence as users will be led to a state of confusion. The study revealed that communicative translation is regarded as the most fruitful method of translation as it conveys the exact message of the original in a best possible manner. Masters of ArtThe aim of this study was to develop isiXhosa terminology for diabetes brochures written in English or in medical terms, to enable diabetes patients to access information on their disease. Lefevere (1992a: xi) describes translation as “rewriting of an original text”. This study re-evaluated Lefevere's concept of translation by examining English brochures and translating them into isiXhosa brochures. In order to demonstrate how the translator of the English brochures transported the source text messages to the target language, literature was reviewed. Translation theories or approaches are discussed to assess their impact on the researcher’s attempt in translating diabetes brochures into isiXhosa. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews, and analysed to assess and answer the problem statement and hypothesis posed by the researcher that there will always be a high death rate of people with diabetes in South Africa, due to a lack of access to materials translated into indigenous languages on how to manage the disease. Since the available information is written in English or medical terms, it is difficult to reach a large sector of people who cannot read, write and/or speak English. Also, diabetes patients who speak the isiXhosa language lack knowledge on diabetes because they do not have access to information written in isiXhosa, or there is no written information at all. The study also aimed to translate English terminology including signs and symptoms, and causes and management of diabetes as these are crucial elements to be understood by diabetes patients in order to monitor their health. Furthermore, the researcher is of opinion that isiXhosa-speaking diabetes patients will be at less risk of dying if they are well informed by means of information in their mother tongue. Language is the soul of people. Without access to information, people are left in the dark and are prone to danger. On this backdrop the research was focused on translating diabetes brochures as a means of disseminating information to diabetes patients whose language is isiXhosa. Challenges encountered during the translation process are highlighted.

Resumo: A tradução é uma prática lingüística que, se por um lado, é influenciada pelas orientações sociais, culturais e políticas do contexto em que é realizada, por outro também tem o poder de atuar sobre o contexto na qual é produzida e consumida. Uma das formas pelas quais a prática tradutória atua na cultura a que se destina a tradução é por meio da veiculação de representações culturais de um determinado país e seu povo. Tais representações culturais utilizam estratégias de significação e associações que auxiliam o direcionamento de interpretações a respeito da nação e do povo em questão e a reiteração de estereótipos nacionais, podendo contribuir para a continuidade das relações assimétricas entre determinadas línguas e culturas. O presente trabalho analisa essa situação enfocando como o jornal norte-americano The New York Times constrói em suas notícias representações culturais do Brasil e dos brasileiros e como essas representações são reconstruídas nas traduções das notícias para o português. As representações do Brasil estudadas são a da sensualidade, da violência, da cordialidade, do otimismo, da baixa auto-estima, do exotismo e da corrupção. Pretende-se evidenciar que as traduções dessas notícias, ao trabalharem com representações culturais do Brasil previamente construídas em inglês, por sua vez também elaboram em língua portuguesa representações desse país e dos brasileiros. Neste caso, uma vez que reconstroem e veiculam as representações para o mesmo público interpretado por elas, as traduções reiteram construções correntes no imaginário da sociedade brasileira e podem contribuir, assim, para a reconstrução, a amenização ou até mesmo o reforço dessas representações.
Abstract: Translation is a linguistic practice influenced by the social, cultural and political orientations of the context in which it occurs. It is also able to affect the culture in which it is produced and consumed. One way in which the practice of translation can have effects on the target culture is through the conveyance of cultural representations of a specific country and its people. Such representations usually employ signifying strategies and associations which both conduct the way in which a given country or people is understood and also reiterate national stereotypes, perpetuating unequal relations between languages and cultures. This dissertation analyses this issue by focusing on how The New York Times constructs cultural representations of Brazil and Brazilians and on how these representations are reconstructed in the news when translated into Portuguese. The representations of Brazil selected for this study are: sensuality, violence, cordiality, optimism, low self-esteem, exoticism and corruption. The research reveals that, in dealing with cultural representations of Brazil which had been previously constructed in English, the translated new items also reiterate these representations in Portuguese. In this case, since the representations produce and convey representations to those who are represented by them, they also serve to perpetuate prevalent images in the Brazilian imagination, and may contribute to reconstruct, soften, or even reinforce such representations.

In this case study, the Swedish artbook Ur Varselklotet along with its English direct translation Tales from The Loop and the indirectly translated Japanese version za・rūpu will be examined and compared. This study will be analysing the different translations to see how certain Swedish words from the source text were affected by first being translated into English and then being translated again from the English translation into Japanese. The goal is to better understand what changes may occur during an indirect translation that would impact how the world of the book is presented to the reader. This study concludes that while the characterisation of these words and sentences in the Japanese text shows that they were influenced by how their translation in the mediating text, it is also clear that one cases study is not enough evidence to make any general statements on how the pivot language affects the final target text when used in an indirect translation process.

Research within translation characterises cultural references as being problematic for translators, meaning they must choose between different translation strategies as to how to transfer these references into the translated text. These strategies are often described in general terms according to how closely oriented they are to the target-culture or source-culture, known as domestication or foreignisation. Translation of literature into English is minimal in world terms and there is seemingly a lack of statistically comparable data concerning the translation of cultural references. This study investigates and compares translation strategies of words denoting cultural references in two translations of the 1998 Swedish Nordic Noir novel Sprängaren by Liza Marklund. The methodology in the study is based on descriptive translation studies, and a categorisation model for types of cultural references is used, as well as an adapted taxonomy model for evaluating translation strategies. Issues addressed are: what types of strategies are used; whether strategies change between translations; how the second translation stands in relation to the retranslation hypothesis and whether any general translation norms are apparent. Results show that a wide variety of translation strategies are used for different types of cultural references, with subtle differences in strategies used in each translation. However, both translations appear to be more domestication-oriented with little overall movement towards to the source culture, as the retranslation hypothesis suggests.

Recipes’ Translation (English into Portuguese): gastronomy as a
cultural expression
It is the aim of the project to translate, from English into Portuguese, a
selected corpus of English traditional pastry recipes. Apart from the translation of
the corpus, an analysis of the translation process will be done to explain the reasons
which led to the decisions taken during the process. The online Cat-Tool
matecat used to assist in the act of translation will be analysed from its efficiency
role. This work also aims to make an approach on the role of the translator, reflecting
on the matters of fidelity and visibility as characteristics of the translator.
Lastly, it will be made a reflection upon adaptation as an auxiliary tool of translation,
as well as the function and usability of technical translation.

Translations have had and still have a fundamental role within the development of national literatures, creating new models, influencing genres and inciting mutations within the culture of a country. The pure act of translating means being able to be in the in betweenness of two different cultures, traditions and languages, and being able to cross that distance and to cover it in the best way possible. It is a process that does not involve just a mere reproduction of the content of the text which is to be translated, and on the same level this process implicate a concrete dialectical comparison between complex and vast cultural systems. Moreover, the study of translation requires interdisciplinary competences able to focus not only on text production, but also on the cultural and linguistic target context, and on the problem connected to the reception of the translation.
In this work, I will take into consideration two texts: “Le Chevalier au Lion” originally written by Chrétien de Troyes, and its Middle English translation entitled “Ywain and Gawain”. Through a comparative analysis I will try to identify the differences between source and target text, and the reasons that brought the translator to embrace some working decisions during the realization of the version that originated the resulting translated text.

In the past, researchers in the field of art and architecture have searched for a definition of Islamic architecture, its history and its social meaning. This study focuses on the Islamic culture of the Arab world and its influences on the architecture of the region, giving an overview of contemporary architecture in the Arab world, its situation, cultural crisis and hope for the future.This research aims to identify the principal characteristics of Islamic architecture, which embody the needs and demands of Muslims according to their Islamic teachings. Muslims form one of the biggest communities in the world, which is suggested to be more than one fifth of the world's population, about one and half billion.This community has special architectural needs related to their religious teachings, traditions and culture, because Islam is not only a religion, it is a complete way of life, which covers all social, political, economic, educational, cultural, hygienic, and behavioural aspects.For a great number of people, the concept of Islamic architecture denotes tangible characteristics of some architectural features like Mashrabiah, arch, dome, or any other architectural pattern that distinguishes this typical style of architecture. But, Islamic architecture is more than just a spectacle of domes and minarets; it is a deep expression of a rich culture that has unified countries across the globe.In the last fifty years, contemporary architecture of the Muslim world in general, and the Arab world in particular, has been exposed to several outside influences that have eventually caused it to be alienated from its particular sense of identity and, thus, to lose its character. It is believed that such matter requires immediate attention towards attempting a "revival process" by uncovering the bases and principles of Islamic architecture, as manifested throughout Islamic history. These principles could be integrated and molded into the contemporary architecture of the Arab world, which reflects a rather complicated and, sometimes, contradicting set of values.The aim of this study is to develop an appropriate definition for Islamic architecture of the Arab world in terms of Islamic teachings and doctrine.Associated with this aim, this research will include within its scope:Understanding Arabian Islamic culture, traditions and environment and how they have affected architectural design.Translating some principles from Islamic doctrine, which can be applied to architectural practice, and to recognize Muslims' architectural needs and demands, according to Islamic teachings.Developing architectural standards that satisfy Muslims architectural needs and a definition of what, in an Islamic context, could be considered as successful Arabian Islamic architecture.Analyzing to what extent contemporary architecture meets Muslims' needs, according to their Islamic teachings by undertaking a Case Study of pre-Modern and contemporary architecture in Egypt.
