We introduce and examine the analytic properties of the three electromagnetic transition form factors of the Sigma*-Lambda hyperon transition. In the first part of the thesis, we discuss the interaction Lagrangian for the hyperons at hand. We calculate the decay rate of the Dalitz decay  Sigma* Lambda -> e+e- in the one-photon approximation in terms of the form factors, as well as the differential cross section of the scattering e+e- -> Sigma*bar Lambda in the one-photon approximation. In the second part of the thesis, we build up the machinery for calculation of the form factors using dispersion relations, performing an analytic continuation from the timelike, q2 > 0, to the spacelike, q2 < 0, region of the virtual photon invariant mass q2. Due to an anomalous cut in the triangle diagram arising from a two-pion saturation of the photon-hyperon vertex, there is an additional term in the dispersive integral. We use the scalar three-point function as a model for the examination of the dispersive approach with the anomalous cut. The one-loop diagram is calculated both directly and using dispersion relations. After comparison of the two methods, they are found to coincide when the anomalous contribution is added to the dispersive integral in the case of the octet Sigma exchange. By examination of the branch points of the logarithm in the discontinuity, we deduce the structure of the Riemann surface of the unitarity cut and present trajectories of the branch points. The result of our analysis of the analytic structure yields a correct dispersive relation for the electromagnetic transition form factors. This opens the way for the calculation of these form factors in the low-energy region for both space- and timelike q2. As an outlook, we present preliminary calculations for the hyperon-pion scattering amplitude using the unitarity and the anomalous contribution in a once-subtracted dispersion relation. Finally we present the corresponding preliminary unsubtracted dispersive calculations for the form factors.

Values for the normal isovector axial vector form factor g$\sb{\rm A}$(Q$\sp2$) are calculated from the leading order perturbative QCD hard scattering amplitude and some previously reported models for the nucleon distribution amplitude, some of which have been derived from QCD sum rules. The values obtained from each of the distribution amplitudes gives a result that is consistent with the data extrapolated to high momentum transfer. The axial vector form factor is around one and one half times the proton's magnetic form factor in all the models which is also in accord with the data. We also calculate the isoscalar axial vector form factor G$\sbsp{\rm A}{\rm (S)}$(Q$\sp2$). Again we calculate the hard scattering amplitude to leading order in perturbative QCD and convolute that with various models for the nucleon distribution amplitude. There is no data at the present time with which to compare the resulting form factors; however, there is interest in knowing the value since the isoscalar axial vector form factor plays a role in some nonstandard weak interaction models. We find the result to be about half of that for the isovector axial vector form factor. The nucleon-delta electromagnetic transition amplitude is calculated using the same method as in the other cases. However, in this case, the hard scattering amplitude is known, and we use the method of QCD sum rules to develop a model for the delta distribution amplitude. We use these results with the same nucleon distribution amplitudes to get a value for the transition amplitude. We also carry out the same calculation for the lowest-lying negative parity states with both isospin one-half which corresponds to the S$\sb{11}$(1535) and isospin three halves. Compared to the results for the nucleon, the delta, and both the higher-mass negative parity cases are less asymmetric with the isospin three-halves states being consistent with the asymptotic form. The results for the nucleon-delta transition amplitude are found to be consistent with the available data as are the results for the nucleon-S$\sb{11}$(1535) transition amplitude.

We calculate the differential cross section for weak electron scattering reaction, e + 3He-' 3H + ve, for energies from 100 MeV to 6 GeV as a function of outgoing nucleus angle from 0 to n/2 radians. We find that the differential cross section at low [q2] increases with electron energy from 0.1 GeV to 6.0 GeV, such that the peak value at 6.0 GeV is approximately 3.2 x 10-40 cm 2 / ster, a factor of 10 larger than the peak value at 0.1 GeV. We also find that the width of the peak falls very rapidly with increasing electron energy. At high [q2] we find that the differential cross section falls by approximately three orders of magnitude making experimental observation at this time unlikely. The contributions of the individual form factors are obtained for electron energies of 0.5GeV and 2.0 GeV. It is found that at low [q2] the form factors, FA(q2) and Fv(q2), make contributions of similar size to the differential cross section and might be simultaneously determined , but for the case of FM(q2) we find that the contribution is too small to determine. It is also found that at large [q2] values, the contribution of FM(q2) is substantially enhanced , but that the cross section is probably too small to enable a direct determination of FM(q2).

This thesis examines the applications and determinations of meson light-cone distribution amplitudes, which enter the theoretical description of exclusive processes at large moment urn transfer. The investigation of such processes, in the context of в physics, provides one with a rich and extensive way of determining the Standard Model parameters of the CKM matrix, which are essential in describing CP violation, and searching for tell-tale signs of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We investigate the twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes of vector mesons and fully examine SU(3)(_F)-breaking effects and include leading G-parity violating terms. We use the conformal expansion allowing the distribution amplitudes to be described by a set of non-perturbative hadronic parameters which is reduced by invoking the QCD equation of motion to find various interrelations between the distribution amplitudes. Numerical values of the leading non-perturbative hadronie parameters are determined from QCD sum rules. The new distribution amplitude results find direct application in the radiative B decays to light vector mesons B → Vγ. We examine the phenomenologically most important observables in this decay mode using the formalism of QCD factorisation in which the distribution amplitudes play a vital role. We also include long-distance photon emission and soft quark loop effects, which formally lie outside the QCD factorisation formalism. The analysis encompasses all the relevant modes, that is B(_u),(_d)→(_p),(_w),K* and B(_s) → φ,K*.We also calculate the B → n(^1) transition form factor using QCD sum rules on the light- cone. The method relies on the collinear factorisation of the QCD dynamics into a pertur- batively calculable hard-scattering kernel and the non-perturbative universal distribution amplitudes. We include the singlet contribution originating from the U(1)a anomaly and bring the calculation consistently within the n-n(^1) mixing framework.

This is a case study focussing on a group of Year 12 students, October 2002 — June 2003, in a sixth-form college in a predominantly working-class area of Essex. The dynamic context is the sampled students' sense of their own progress, cross referenced with that of their teachers and parents. The issues under examination are the links between initial transition and the achievement of a sense of security and focus as the students embark on their AS studies. As part of the guinea-pig generation for SATS and Curriculum 2000, their educational journey has taken place within a time of flux and the study makes space to hear from them, as well as to counterpoint their 'narratives' within a wider setting of policy change. While the main reason that there has been so much more research on the transition from primary to secondary school is clearly that the size of the problem is far greater, another reason may be because the older student is considered less vulnerable to the effects of change. My research indicates that this may not be so. I maintain that the two stages are comparable in so far as wasted opportunities in transition can have detrimental effects on academic and personal fulfilment. I suggest three contexts that can be seen to impact on transition: the institution, the curriculum and government policy. In looking beyond the study, I argue that it is important to consider how far changes to these contexts which may arise out of reforms in education for fourteen to nineteen year olds, currently under discussion, are likely to affect transition for students in the future. I take an interpretevist, ethnographic approach, and reflect throughout on my position as a practitioner researcher, the implications of whose studies are lived out in front of her each teaching day.

We present the result of a measurement of the π⁰ electromagnetic transition form factor in the time-like region of momentum transfer. From a data sample of roughly 100,000 π⁰ → e⁺ e⁻ γ decays, observed in the SINDRUM I magnetic spectrometer at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), we measure a value of the form factor slope a = 0.02 ± 0.01 (stat) ± 0.02 (sys). This measurement is consistent with both the results of the recent measurement by CELLO (DESY) in the space-like region, and with the vector meson dominance prediction of a ≈ 0.03.

Objectives: Youth who age out of the child welfare system are among the most vulnerable group of young people entering adulthood today. Unlike their generational peers, foster youth lack the familial supports necessary to postpone major life decisions and gradually enter adulthood. Although there are notable differences between Canadian and American child welfare contexts, young people exiting both systems experience a compressed transition and are tasked with quickly managing adult responsibilities. Few studies have examined pre-transition factors that correlate with adolescents’ readiness skills prior to exiting out-of-home care. Methods: This dissertation presents two studies that examine factors associated with transition-age foster youths’ readiness skills for adulthood. In the first study I used cross-sectional data (n = 278) from Illinois, United States to assess the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on youths’ independent living skills and life domain functioning. I hypothesized that exposure to ACEs would predict lower transition readiness, and that trauma-related stress symptoms and strengths would moderate this association. In the second study I used cross-sectional data (n = 1,026) from Ontario, Canada to identify youth-, placement-, and agency-level factors that predicted youths’ self-care and financial literacy skills. I hypothesized that factors most proximal to individuals would impact readiness (e.g., academic performance, self-esteem). Results: Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that ACEs predicted lower transition readiness. Traumatic stress symptoms moderated these relations, and engagement in risky behaviours partially mediated these relations (study 1). Hierarchical linear modelling indicated that agency-level differences did not impact readiness. In contrast, general linear modelling indicated that a subset of individual- and placement-level factors did impact readiness. Specifically, higher academic performance, higher self-esteem, a greater number of developmental assets, older age, an older age of entry into care, a greater number of placement transitions, and kinship care placement predicted higher transition readiness. A greater number of socioemotional difficulties, a greater number of long-term mental and/or physical health conditions, and a lower frequency of problematic parenting practices combined with a higher frequency of effective parenting practices predicted lower transition readiness (study 2). Conclusion: Findings illustrated that although ACEs exposure predicts lower adult readiness among transition-age youth, whether youth engage in risky behaviours and possess developmental strengths may be better predictors of their readiness to age out of care (study 1). Findings also illustrated that a subset of individual- and placement-level factors predict self-sufficiency skills among transition-age youth (study 2).

This study describes the influences on continued sporting participation in netball for a group of adolescent girls as they make the transition from primary to secondary school and between sub-junior and junior sporting structures. A qualitative research design using one to one and semi structured focus group interviews was applied. The research describes how these meanings and identities both influence decisions about ongoing sporting participation and are influenced by situations, events and people as the participants move from primary to secondary school. Individual and focus group interview and survey data, indicate that for this group of young adolescent girls a variety of influences and factors impacted on their decisions to continue or not in the sport of netball. While evidence in this study supports the literature findings that competence, friends, team aspects, competition and fun are all strong motivations for continued participation, it has also highlighted the sensitive nature of these factors to external or structural changes in the girls lives. In particular, the transition to high school intensified the influence of many of the above mentioned factors. For participants who did not have a high level of perceived competence or the security of friends with which to seek new avenues for playing, continued participation in this particular sport was less likely. Allocating discretionary time to the sport of netball for those who continued in the sport, related to the sport meeting their needs, of which, challenge, skill development, achievement and most importantly social dimensions were paramount. Feedback obtained from the participants can help sport providers gain a better understanding of what influences young female adolescent's decisions about continuance or discontinuance in the specific sport of netball. If we want less drop-out in sport by young adolescent girls during these transition periods the challenge to schools, junior coaches, community sport providers and parents will be to develop strategies to minimise the effects of these transition factors. Perspective's gained will help direct the efforts of sport providers in establishing sporting experiences and intervention programs that retain young girls in sport particularly netball, as they make the transition from primary to secondary school and through to adulthood.

Objective: To explore the informational and behavioural factors, that affect women’s participation in physical activity (PA) and body weight changes during perimenopause. Methods: An environmental scan of online health websites to determine availability and quality of information for women about body weight changes during transition to menopause. An interpretive descriptive qualitative study of women age 40 – 60 to explore factors influencing their PA. Descriptive and inductive qualitative analysis were used. Results: Six of 52 websites (11.5%) contained information specific to perimenopausal women, with one site citing evidence. For 26 women interviewed, the most common enabling factors were daily structure, positive feelings, and accountability; while common barriers were disruptions in daily structure, competing demands, and self - sacrifice. Conclusions: There is a lack of information regarding body weight changes for perimenopausal women. Perimenopausal women attribute their PA participation to psychosocial factors, and not the physiology of menopause.

Boarding school has been and continues to be an important stage in the educational experiences of many Aboriginal people living in remote communities in Northern Territory, Australia. The experience of moving away from family, land and community presents many challenges for students moving to boarding school and managing the dramatic transition between two vastly different cultures. This study focused on identifying the factors that help students successfully transition from a remote community to boarding school. The study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach to investigate and analyse the experiences of Aboriginal students at a regional boarding school in the Northern Territory. Critical race theory was used as a theoretical lens throughout the study design, data collection, analysis and discussion. Quantitative enrolment data from 108 boarding students was analysed to identify aspects that correlated with a successful transition to boarding school. These findings were incorporated into two focus group discussions and one semi structured interview with students from a boarding school in Darwin, Northern Territory. The qualitative data was thematically analysed to draw themes and sub themes for further discussion. The findings indicate that the transition from small, remote communities is highly challenging. In particular the impact of being away from family and community led to feelings of homesickness and a loss of cultural knowledge and connection to land. Students recognise in the need to return to country, family and community to maintain cultural connections which questions the often assumed benefits of boarding school. Both the quantitative and qualitative data indicate that parents, family and community members provide important mechanisms of support and ensure a successful transition. In particular family support helps students to deal with homesickness, provide encouragement and help maintain a connection to culture. This thesis, provides an important addition to an emerging area of research about the important transition from Aboriginal communities to boarding school. The study focused on the experiences of students at one school in the Northern Territory and records and presents student voices and experiences undertaking the transition to boarding school. Hearing more student voices will enable all of us to gain a clearer appreciation of the impact of transitioning to boarding school for young Aboriginal people, and what can be done to improve it.

The measurement of the π0 electromagnetic transition form factor (TFF) slope a is performed in the time-like region of momentum transfer using a sample of 1.1 x 106 π0→ e+e-y Dalitz decay collected at the NA62-RK experiment in 2007. The event selection, the fit procedure and the study of the systematic effects are presented. The final result obtained a = (3.68 ± 0.51stat ± 0.25syst) X 10- 2 is the most precise to date and represents the first evidence of a non-zero π0 TFF slope with more than 3σ. The NA62 experiment based at the CERN SPS is currently taking data and aims at measuring the branching fraction of the K→ πvv ultra-rare decay with 10% precision and less than 10% background. A complex trigger and data acquisition system is in place to record the data collected by the various detectors in use to reach this goal. The Run Control system of the experiment is meant to supervise and control them in a simple transparent way. The choices made to address the requirements for the system and the most important aspects of its implementation are discussed.

Transitions are a natural part of life. Youth grow and develop physically, socially, psychologically, and intellectually during primary and secondary school years. The transition from secondary to postsecondary education is an important transition as youth not only move from high school to college, but also from adolescence to young adulthood. It is a time when young adults naturally desire to become more independent in pursuit of their personal dreams and aspirations. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that academic, psychological, and social factors on youth with high-incidence disabilities as they strive to make successful postsecondary education transitions. Current trends indicate youth with high-incidence disabilities are graduating from high school and are attending vocational schools, colleges, and universities in increasing numbers. Transition barriers still limit many youth who could otherwise attend institutions of higher education regardless of disability type. Findings suggest academic and psychological factors most significantly predict successful postsecondary education transitions. Recommendations for improved transition planning and parental training are suggested.

This study investigated the factors that affect the re-entry process of military members returning from overseas deployments, using the Critical Incident Technique method. To date, no other study has adequately investigated to this degree and focus, looking at what factors helped and hindered the successful reintegration process. This study expands the understanding of what is desired by military members on return from overseas deployments. It also presents an adaptation of a new theoretical model of re-entry. Fifteen participants were selected through their response to a ‘call for volunteers’ letter sent to military personnel in the vicinity who were either known by the researcher, known through the Veterans Transition Program coordinated by Dr. Marv Westwood, or known through those solicited persons above to have returned from overseas deployment over a year ago. The incident categories were rated by thirteen of the fifteen study participants as well as two external persons (one with military background and the other with no military background). The ratings of the categories resulted in over 90% concurrence through placing a random selection of incidents into the investigator-created categories. A total of 445 critical incidents were gathered, with 5 categories that helped the re-entry process, and 6 categories that hindered the re-entry process. The findings of this study are consistent with previous literature pertaining to military members who have returned from deployments, but also expand the information discussed in the literature. The unique findings of this study propose changes to the current programs available to military members and a adapted model of re-entry for military members. These new programs include adaptations to the military decompression program, the use of group therapy composed of other military members, the essential need to talk to others as an instrumental component of successful reintegration, and also an adapted model of re-entry for military members is proposed.

As the population ages, policymakers struggle to cope with the increasing demands for home care and institutional long-term care. This thesis project focuses on factors associated with the transition from home to institutional care for people with dementia. Using health administrative data at a population level, we construct a multivariable model that estimates the time between home care initiation after dementia diagnosis and placement in a long-term care home. From the model, we identify protective factors that allow people with dementia to remain at home for longer, with a particular emphasis on the health workforce and the contribution of formal and informal caregivers to delaying the transition from home to institutional care. Together, these results inform policymakers in capacity planning and in determining where investments should be targeted to maintain people with dementia at home, along with the associated health workforce implications.

This thesis identifies factors for success and un-success in European sustainable urban development projects and subsequently aims to correlate them with the characteristics and practices of an on-going project, concluding in a set of policy recommendations. Worldwide urbanisation brings a concentration of activities contributing to environmental degradation and social injustice, which implies the need for implementing sustainable development practices in urban planning. Several examples of sustainability-niched experiment districts are found in Europe and in this study four of them were examined through a structured literature review. Results showed that factors impacting the outcomes of the projects were clustered in five broad categories: political/policy, project governance, financial/economic, technical/design and resident/citizen factors. Recurring factors, also implied in the process of the on-going development of Sege Park in Malmö involved multi-scale knowledge transfer, unified leadership, continuity in communication and funding, reflexivity, market fluctuations, design and lifestyle/affluence. By applying a transition management perspective to these recurring factors and their implications for the Sege Park district, the results of this thesis lastly concluded in a set of policy recommendations. Potential transition actors may facilitate the process on a larger scale by partaking in long-term, multi-scalar networks for urban transitions, and on a smaller scale by creating and fostering arenas and policies promoting reflexivity in a city. Furthermore, a continued exploration of pathways and strategies towards a long-term sustainability vision shared by project actors, as well as ways to secure continuous funding for projects is encouraged. A slight shift from mainly relying on technology to solve sustainability issues, towards and integrated socio-technical systems model may be observed in the on-going project. Future challenges to take on may involve gentrification processes, insecure funding, institutional reflexivity and syncing legislation with the process towards sustainability transitions.

This study addresses systemized transition planning and preparation for adult adjustment of secondary students with disabilities. Transition planning and preparation for youth with disabilities as they move from school to work and community adjustment is essential; however, thorough planning is rarely accomplished. Therefore, it is important to study the level at which transition services are currently delivered for secondary students with disabilities and to examine factors that affect delivery of those services. This study investigates (a) the status of transition services in Virginia school Divisions, (b) the status of specific factors that may affect delivery of transition services, (c) factors related to delivery of transition services and (da) demographics about persons most responsible for coordination of transition in local school divisions. Specifically, four transition service areas were examined: a) integration of students with disabilities with nondisabled peers, b) instructional programs, c) coordinated planning and d) support services. Also investigated were three factors that affect delivery of transition services: a) cooperation of vocational and special education, b) administrative support and c) a formal interagency transition team. Findings indicated the degree to which transition services were delivered across the state, as well as relationships between the level of delivery of transition services and the factors that were examined. Positive correlations demonstrated that the greater the level of administrative support for transition at the local level, the greater the level of delivery of transition services. Further, the greater the level of cooperation of vocational and special education, the greater the level of delivery of transition services. Existence of an interagency team correlated substantially with coordinated planning services.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) arise from a specialized population of endothelial cells, termed hemogenic endothelium (HE). HE was first identified in the murine dorsal aorta (DA) at embryonic day (E) 10.5. This process is known as endothelial to hematopoietic transition (EHT). Our aim was to identify genes crucial for the development of embryonic HSCs from the endothelium through the process of EHT. We accomplished this through the use of a transgenic mouse model which expresses GFP under the control of an intronic enhancer of the HE gene Runx1. The expression of this enhancer was combined with endothelial and hematopoietic markers to sort specialized endothelial cell populations from the DA of E10.5 embryos. RNA-seq data was generated from these sorted cell populations and 9 possible upstream transcription factors were identified. These candidate transcription factors include both known and novel regulators of EHT, including a novel regulator Meis1. Additionally, endothelial cell populations isolated from E9.5 embryos were sorted and cultured to develop an ex vivo co-culture assay that supports differentiation of pre-HE cells to HSCs. The effect of oxygen tension on endothelial and hematopoietic cell growth was investigated as a means to better support endothelial and hematopoietic cells. Oxygen transition during culture was found to significantly increase the proportion of wells which produced hematopoietic cells, and may aid in HE cell maintenance in culture. To examine the possibility of using this model to study regulators of EHT, the effect of blocking Notch signalling with a ɣ-secretase inhibitor added to our ex vivo culture was examined. Inhibition of Notch signalling did not significantly affect the generation of hematopoietic cells in our assay. Additionally, we evaluated the hematopoietic activity of tissue isolated from E9.5 Meis1fl/fl VeCre null embryos in this assay. No differences in hematopoietic cell generation were observed between wild-type and Meis1fl/fl VeCre null tissues in culture. Characterization of these embryos at E14.5 suggests that there exists a potential defect in Meis1fl/fl VeCre null embryos in later stages of embryonic hematopoiesis. This project contributes to the further understanding of genes important in EHT, while potentially defining transcriptional networks involved in HSC development.

In the late stages of cancer, tumors acquire the ability to spread throughout the body and invade distant tissues in a process called metastasis. Studies have shown that metastasis is responsible for 90% of all cancer-related deaths, making this an important field of study. In breast cancers, 30% of patients overexpress the HER2 oncoprotein, causing a more invasive and metastatic disease. Invasion can be stimulated in vitro using the soluble ligand transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ) to induce a process called EMT (epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition), where epithelial cells transition into a migratory phenotype through cell-cell junction breakdown. SLK is a Ste20-like kinase that has been linked to many processes, including cell migration and signaling downstream of the HER2 receptor complex. Here we show that the cellular migration and invasion of TGFβ-treated normal mammary epithelial cells is significantly impaired in the absence of SLK. Additionally, immunofluorescence analyses demonstrate that SLK knockdown conditions decrease a cell’s ability to progress through EMT due to the visible staining of epithelial markers. We find that SLK-depleted cultures express significantly lower levels of Snail1,and fibronectin mRNA levels following TGF-β treatment. Surprisingly, our data demonstrates that SLK kinase activity is not activated downstream of TGF-β stimulation, and that a kinase-dead SLK rescues Snail1 mRNA expression levels. Together these data suggest that SLK plays a novel role in TGFβ-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in a kinase activity-independent manner.

The aim of the work reported here was to determine the influence of an amine curing agent, and postcure cycle on the mechanical and thermal properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin. The results of this initial study were then used as the basis for selecting material to obtain optimum toughness in epoxy/glass fibre systems. These basic materials were further used to make comparisons with the properties of modified resin systems which contained commercial elastomers. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), flexural and interlaminar shear tests, Instrumented Falling Weight Impact (IFWI), visual observation, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were all used to investigate various properties and the structures which gave rise to them. The properties of cured products were found to be affected by the amounts of curing agent, curing times and temperatures, and the structure of the elastomers. Not surprisingly the maximum thermal and mechanical properties tended to be found in the stoichiometric (standard) mix systems. However, postcuring at higher than room temperature, which was used as the basic curing temperature, led to more conversion. This effect improved the thermal and mechanical properties of both the unmodified and modified resin systems. The maximum flexural strength of 104 MPa of the unreinforced resins was found in the stoichiometric mix ratio after postcure at 150°C for 4 hr. However, the maximum flexural modulus and glass transition temperature (Tg) were found after postcuring at the same temperature for 48 hr. This was believed to be due to increased crosslinking, but unfortunately the longer curing time led to degradation of the resins. In the systems modified with -20 phr of polyetheramine elastomers, the one modified with the lowest molecular weight (2000) was found to have the highest flexural strength (85.8 MPa) and modulus (2.5 GPa). The impact properties of all the composites with modified resin matrices were found to be higher than the unmodified resin matrix composites. The best impact properties were, however, obtained with the elastomer modifier with a molecular weight of 4000. The impact energy at maximum force increased from 11.9 to 16.4 J, and energy at failure increased from 18.7 to 21.6 J. This increase in impact properties was due to the increase in areas of phase separated elastomer particles over similar systems with lower molecular weight modifier.

This thesis investigates the theoretical dimension of fuel transition in developing countries; and assesses the role of socio-cultural factors as determinants of fuel choice at household level. Past research has focused on income as a determining factor for fuel transition, as depicted by the energy ladder model, and the more development oriented energy leapfrogging model. This thesis challenges this notion by providing empirical evidence from Catembe, Mozambique; suggesting that socio-cultural factors are just as important determinants for household energy transition. By applying psycho-anthropologic research techniques, a series of qualitative and quantitative results from 402 households in Catembe, provide a framework for understanding the core factors responsible for household cooking energy choice. It was determined that factors such as taste preferences, cooking practices, local cuisine, kitchen type, gender relations and fuel preferences are culturally determined, and significantly influence on the adoption of modern cooking technologies. To demonstrate the importance for considering such factors, the introduction of an ethanol cook-stove is simulated and evaluated in terms of its applicability to user needs and preferences in Catembe. Results show that despite meeting developmental objectives, the stove falls short in conforming to the culinary traditional of intended beneficiaries.

Nurse residency programs (NRPs) have been identified as a means to promote transitioning of new nurses into the professional nursing role. Questions have arisen related to which elements within those programs are most meaningful to the development of new nurses. As the nursing shortage drives the need for quick transition and development of nurses to meet workforce needs, nursing must identify what is meaningful to nurses in their transition to practice. The purpose of this multi-site study was to explicate meaning from the experiences of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) who have just completed NRPs. The research question was “What factors have meaning for NLRNs who have experienced transition to practice in nurse residency programs in acute care settings?”

Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from six NLRNs from three different NRPs after completion of their programs. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, themes and variations within those themes were derived from the descriptive narratives provided from participant interviews. Overarching themes identified were Relationships, Reflection, Active Learning, Resources and Organizational Systems. Findings have implications for practice and education as the nursing profession strives to find ways to transform nurses in an effective and efficient manner.

Transglutaminases (TGases) are a group of enzymes that catalyze the formation of an amide bond between the γ-carboxamide group of a glutamine residue and an amine donor, usually an ε-amino group of the lysine residue, leading to the formation of ε-(γ-glutamyl)lysine crosslinks. Owing to the roles that transglutaminases such as tissue transglutaminase (TG2) and Factor XIIIa (FXIIIa) have been found to play in a wide range of disease states, efforts have been directed towards the study of these proteins. The study of enzymes to better understand their function and mode of action is facilitated through the use of tools such as protein labelling, enzyme inhibition, and substrate analogue kinetic studies among others. Transition state analogues have been effective inhibitors in the study of enzyme activity. Sulfoxide inhibitors can efficiently mimic transition states leading to the tetrahedral intermediate of an acyl transfer reaction and we discuss the synthesis towards sulfoxide transition state analogue inhibitors of TG2 in chapter 2. Novel sulfoxide compounds were synthesized, though the desired target compounds proved difficult to isolate due to their instability. Fluorescent probes are effective in protein labelling as a means of discerning activity. This technique was applied in order to elucidate intracellular TG2 activity, which is a topic of controversy. To that end, the synthesis of a fluorescent, TG2-specific, cell permeable probe is discussed in chapter 3. However, preliminary in vivo results show that while the probe is cell permeable and fluorescent, it was not TG2-specific. Molecular modelling suggests that the hexa-arginine tag, designed to improve cell permeability, decreases the affinity of the probe for its intended target. Finally, FXIIIa has become a new addition to the study of transglutaminases in the Keillor group. Given our interest in this enzyme, we had three goals for this work as explained in chapter 4. Firstly, owing to the anticipated high demand for FXIIIa required for later experiments, our primary aim was the development of an optimized method for the expression and purification of recombinant FXIIIA. After evaluating different conditions for FXIIIA expression, the Studier auto-induction ZYP media1 at 20 °C for 24 h was found to provide the optimal conditions for the expression of recombinant GST-tagged FXIIIA, typically giving a total of 1.5 mg of protein/L of culture. Secondly, a variety of different peptides were synthesized and tested using a glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH)-based assay to identify a high affinity sequence for a substrate of FXIIIa. The two peptides with the highest affinity for FXIIIa were Ac-DQMMMAF-OH and Ac-DQMML-OH. Testing with TG2 displayed negligible reactivity, confirming their use as orthogonal peptides, results reinforced by modelling studies of the peptides with both FXIIIa and TG2. This discovery represents the first time peptides orthogonal to TG2 with affinity for FXIIIa have been kinetically characterized with both transglutaminase enzymes. Lastly, our work towards a fluorogenic activity assay by incorporating a coumarin ester through attachment to a glutamic acid residue into a peptide sequence recognized by FXIIIa, will be discussed.

Cancer cells undergo epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) to dissociate from the primary tumor and to survive to chemotherapy. EMT is controlled by Snail1, a transcriptional factor also required for the activation of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Snail1 is short-lived in normal epithelial cells as a consequence of the coordinated and continuous ubiquitination by several F-box specific E3 ligases. We have performed a siRNA screening to identify deubiquitinases (enzymes removing the ubiquitin chains conjugated to a substrate), increasing Snail1 stability and identified the Ubiquitin Specific Protease 27X (USP27X) as an enzyme that interacts with, deubiquitinates and stabilizes Snail1. We observed that USP27X modulate EMT features through the stabilization of Snail1, such as tumor cell invasion, cancer metastasis and chemo-resistance. In addition, USP27X is essential for the TGFβ-induced EMT and the activation of CAFs modulated by this cytokine. To summarize, we identified USP27X as a new modulator of Snail1 stabilization and its repression could prevent the metastatic and chemo-resistant proteins of the tumoral cells.

Aquest procés està estrictament regulat pel factor de transcripció Snail1 que, a més a més, és requerit per l’activació dels fibroblasts que envolten el tumor. Snail1 és una proteïna amb una vida mitja molt curta en les cèl.lules epitelials; això es deu a que és contínuament ubiqüitinat per l’activitat coordinada que exerceixen diferents enzims anomenats ligases d’ubiqüitina. Fent un screening de siRNAs, vam identificar deubiqüitinases (enzims que remouen la ubiqüitina) que podrien estar involucrades a l’estabilització de Snail1 i vam caracteritzar la USP27X com un enzim que interacciona, deubiqüitina i estabilitza aquest factor. Vam observar que USP27X modula a través de l’estabilització d’Snail1 trets relacionats amb la EMT com la invasió, la metàstasi i la quimioresistència de les cèl·lules tumorals. A més a més, USP27X és crucial per la inducció de la EMT i l’activació de fibroblasts depenents de TGFβ. En resum, hem caracteritzat USP27X com una proteïna clau en el control de l’estabilització d’Snail1 i el bloqueig d’aquesta deubiqüitinasa podria contrarestar les capacitats metastàtiques i quimioresistents de les cèl·lules tumorals.

The growing interest in sustainability amounts pressure on organisations to operate in more environmentally friendly ways, sparking the need for radical sustainable change. The purpose of this study is to discover what factors and conditions facilitate and hinder organisational learning for sustainability transitions (ST), a topic that has caught recent academic attention and thus needs further interdisciplinary research. The conceptual framework derives inspiration from the Four Factors of Learning for ST whilst the Competing Values Framework and the Three Loops of Learning are used as additional lens to better understand the conditions of learning for ST. The thesis will take a qualitative approach through conducting a content analysis of three company documents and seven semi-structured interviews with employees from a public service agency in Scandinavia currently implementing a transition lab. A descriptive analysis of the coded data highlights the levels of understanding and acceptance towards sustainability transitions from the case organisation and the conditions that facilitate and hinder organisational learning. The results show that the most prominent of the Four Factors of Learning for ST in the early phase of a sustainability transition is interpersonal, followed by material, institutional and intrapersonal. Within these factors, the discussion further highlights the most prevalent sub-codes and themes that reoccur in the data. Moreover, five key findings under the themes of flexibility versus control, resource availability through digitalisation, communication, collaboration and facing complexity using institutional logics were identified as the primary facilitating and hindering factors that promote learning for STs. Finally, recommendations are presented to inform both theory, and practice, as further analysing learning for ST is of high relevance to better understand and design these learning journeys and a more sustainable (organisational) future.

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate socioeconomic and personal network factors as predictors for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in women, especially within their reproductive transition period.

Design: Cross-sectional

Methods: Questionnaire data from the 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) in combination with a DSM-IV diagnostic algorithm was used to assess the risk factors associated with female depression. A total of 19,771 women were grouped according to age based upon clinically defined reproductive status: 18-35, 36-45, >45 years. A scoring system of 0 to 24 was created to assess for severity of depressive symptoms, and female participants with outcomes ≥10 met the criteria for MDD. Logistic regression was used to determine predictive factors stratified by each age group of women.

Results: Unemployment was a significant predictor of MDD for women in their transition period (OR = 2.05, CI 90% 1.21, 3.47). Reproductive transitioning women also had higher odds of MDD when there was little to no emotional support (OR = 4.59, CI 90% 2.86, 7.38), and poor self-reported health (OR= 2.73, CI 90% 1.44, 5.17). More frequent days of poor health and inadequate rest were also significant for the women during their menopausal transition.

Conclusion: The following study provides a significant platform for improved research on female mental health, particularly across the life span. More intensive research is needed to understand possible associative relationships between female age and depression, in order to initiate appropriate intervention programs.

再生可能エネルギーの大量導入に向けて、電力需給の安定化を目的として蓄電池を用いる電力貯蔵技術に注目が集まっている。現状のリチウムイオン電池(LIB)がベースの先進LIBは250Wh/kgの高エネルギー密度を有し、自動車のみならず電力貯蔵用途としても普及が期待されている。本研究では先進LIB正極材料として期待されるリチウム過剰系正極と高ニッケル三元系正極について容量低下などの劣化要因を明確にして、それら課題に対して正極粒子への酸化物修飾による解決を検討した。
The development of energy storage technologies using batteries has attracted much attention to introduce the renewable energy. If we can achieve 250 Wh kg-1 with the advanced LIBs based on the principle of LIB, we can lower the cost of the total energy storage systems while ensuring the safety, and hence the advanced LIBs will accelerate the world-wide spread of large-scale power storage systems. In this thesis, the author focused surface modification of lithium-rich layered ternary transition metal oxide and high-nickel layered ternary transition metal oxide cathode particles with oxides as mitigation methods for capacity fading.

Public and private incentive programs have encouraged conversions to high efficiency, low emissions wood heating systems as a strategy to promote renewable energy and support local economies in the Northeastern US. Despite these efforts, the adoption of these systems remains slow. The study that is the subject of this dissertation examines several social, economic, policy and environmental factors that affect the decisions of individuals and small-scale institutions (local business and community facilities) to transition to automated wood pellet boilers and furnaces (AWPH) utilizing local fuel sources. Due to the complexity and risk associated with conversion, the transition to these systems can help further both a practical and theoretical understanding of the global transition to non-fossil fuel technologies. Chapter One of this dissertation examines this notion in more detail, as well as spells out the research questions of this study. Chapter Two delves into the research methods and their implications for other studies of energy transitions. These methods include interviews with 60 consumers, technology and fuel suppliers, and NGO and state agency personnel. These provided in-depth qualitative data which are complemented by a four-state survey (New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Maine) of adopters and informed non-adopters of AWPH systems (n=690; 38% response rate). Interview and survey questions, as well as subsequent coding, was developed through use of diffusion of innovation theory, the multi-level perspective on sociotechnical transitions, as well as through collaboration with industry experts and research partners. Chapters Three and Four offer a discussion of the results and their implications. Specifically, Chapter Three examines the complex system actors, elements, and interactions that are part of the transition from fossil fuel technology to AWPH. Chapter Four focuses on the data surrounding state and private programs that encourage the use of AWPH and the implications that this data has for effective climate mitigation and energy policy. Data show that AWPH consumers, who should be considered “early adopters” due to the small number of AWPH adopters in the region, are largely value-driven but are also concerned about upfront costs and lack of available technical support and fuel delivery options. Both environmental values (e.g. desire to find alternative to fossil fuels, concern for air quality and belief in climate change) and social values (e.g. support for the local economy and wood products industry) influenced consumer decisions, especially when fuel oil prices were low. Financial incentives, which are offered by all four states in the study region, were highly influential, but additional decision support offered by a non-profit (e.g. site visits, informational workshops, local print media) were rated highly by consumers where they were available. These additional supports, as well as the community-based nature of the non-profit program, enabled a broader range of people (lower income, more risk averse) to choose AWPH as well as created more efficiency in the supply chain. This approach created a reinforcing feedback loop between broader early adopters of AWPH, normalization of AWPH technology and its associated infrastructure, and increased levels of technical support and fuel availability. These findings suggest that efforts to increase adoption of renewable technologies that use locally harvest fuels take a community-based and system-wide approach, targeting both consumer and supplier motivations and barriers.

Todavía se desconoce como la IS progresa a lo largo del continuo de severidad (Estudio 1); y si características especificas de la IS predicen la transición a futuros intentos suicidas (Estudio 2). Objetivos: (Estudio 1) Explorar: 1) la distribución y progresión de la IS a lo largo de un continuo de severidad (ideación pasiva, ideación seria y plan suicida) en adolescentes evaluados 3 años consecutivos; 2) si las formas de IS, estatus de minoría, genero, o trastornos psiquiátricos en año 1 (T1), predicen IS durante los dos años siguientes (T2-3); 3) si estatus de minoría, genero, o trastornos psiquiátricos predicen IS en T2-3 en adolescentes sin conducta suicida en T1. Introduction: Adolescent suicidal ideation (SI) is a complex phenomenon that involves continuum of severity; however, in extant research this complexity has been overlooked. It remains unclear how SI progress along the continuum of severity (Study 1); and whether specific characteristics of SI predict the transition to future suicide attempts (SA) (Study 2). Objectives: (Study 1) To explore: 1) the distribution and progression of SI along a continuum of severity (passive ideation, serious ideation, and suicide plan) in early adolescence over 3-waves of assessment; 2) whether SI forms, minority status, gender, or psychiatric disorders at wave 1 predict SI at waves 2 and/or 3 (follow-up); 3) whether minority status, gender, or psychiatric predict SI at follow-up among adolescents without suicidal behavior at wave 1. (Study 2) To examine: 1) whether several forms of inquiry on a screen for SI differentially predict risk for a SA over a 4–6-year follow-up period among adolescents; 2) the specific characteristics of SI that best predict a future SA among a subsample of ideators. Methods: (Study 1) Adolescents (N=1,221; 48% girls) aged 10-13 years at wave 1, residing in the South Bronx, New York (minority status) and San Juan and Caguas, Puerto Rico, were assessed yearly for 3 waves. Past-year SI forms, SA, and selected psychiatric disorders were assessed with the DISC-IV. (Study 2) Adolescents (N=506, 61% female) identified as part of a high school screening in the New York City metropolitan area. Teens completed the Columbia Suicide Screen, selected modules from the DISC-2.3, the Beck Depression Inventory. Adolescents with SI at baseline (N=122) also completed the Adolescent Suicide Interview, which inquired about characteristics of their most recent SI episode. Adolescents were followed up 4-6 years later and assessed for any SA since baseline. Results: (Study 1) Full-adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses revealed that passive ideation at wave 1 significantly predicted passive (OR=2.5) and active ideation (OR=2.7) at follow-up. Active ideation (serious ideation with/without plan) showed the strongest association with passive ideation (OR=3.9) and active ideation (OR=26.0) at follow-up. Mood disorders were significantly associated only with passive ideation (OR=3.1), while anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders were significantly associated with active ideation (OR=3.8; OR=2.6, respectively) at follow-up. Among adolescents without suicidal behavior at wave 1, anxiety disorders and minority status predicted incidence of SI (OR=2.1; OR=2.4, respectively). (Study 2) Thinking about suicide often (OR=3.5), seriously (OR=3.1), and for a long time (OR=2.3) were associated with a future SA, adjusting for gender, psychiatric disorders, and SA history at baseline. Only SI frequency remained significant (OR=3.6) when also adjusting for currency, seriousness, and duration. Among ideators, ideating 1 hour or more (vs. less) was associated with a future SA (OR=3.6), adjusting for gender, depressive symptoms, SA history, and other SI characteristics at baseline, and it was also associated with making a SA earlier. Discussion: Our findings suggest that early adolescents with passive ideation were at risk of transitioning to more severe ideation. The low rate of active ideation at this age may open a window to implement strategies that curb the progression along the continuum of severity, by targeting mood disorder to decrease risk of passive ideation; and anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders to prevent active ideation. Assessment of ideators at greatest risk of engaging in future SA should include inquiries about the length of a typical SI episode. Identifying specific SI characteristics that predict risk of future SA is a critical step in prevention, especially among adolescents without previous SA.

Changing weather patterns challenge societies globally and at multiple levels related to amongst others health, the environment, disaster management and mitigation. There is a need for greater flexibility and resilience, which in turn can be enabled through a transition towards increased sustainability in governance and infrastructure. Urban rainwater harvesting (URWH) is a term used in this paper to collect various approaches to the sustainable handling of rainwater in cities, a practice becoming increasingly common in some areas of the world. Global experiences can be useful learning opportunities in the planning, implementation and maintenance of sustainable urban rainwater harvesting in future smart cities. The aim of this thesis was to synthesize the factors of success of previous projects, in order to develop a framework tailored to the evaluation of projects concerned with rainwater harvesting. The review spans over 18 projects of different scale and design. The findings of the study show that successful URWH projects are: (1) found as part of urban renewal schemes; (2) successfully implemented by involved actors with open mindsets and flexible and collaborative working approaches; (3) maintained based on plans determined from the onset of the project, developed together with local actors, in order to involve the community and strengthen social inclusion. The revised evaluative framework, which is proposed as a result of the review, indicates general trends of success among the reviewed cases. To be fully operational, the framework should be further developed with additional URWH projects and revised thereafter.

Primary to secondary transition has been identified as a poignant marker in a child’s education. Most children adapt to their new school following an initial dip in attainment and well-being. However for a small minority, the negative impacts are more long lasting (West, Sweeting & Young, 2010). The aim of this research was to explore the factors which support successful transition from primary to secondary school for young people with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, in order that support can be developed. The study utilised a sequential mixed methods design, with a complementary quantitative and principal qualitative phase, to elicit and explore the transition experiences of the young people. The sample comprised of 24 Year 7 students who were placed on the Special Educational Needs register for Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. Questionnaires gathered quantitative data, highlighting which participants experienced more and less successful transition to secondary school. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was chosen to frame the qualitative phase. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine students, those who reported experiencing the most and least successful transitions. The quantitative data analysis revealed the majority of participants experienced success within one area of their transition, with most students noting an increased interest and school and school work. The qualitative data built upon this to provide a more in-depth account of the students’ experiences. This revealed that while their experiences were similar to those reported in previous research, the importance of receiving social and emotional support throughout this process was highlighted. For those in the most successful group, secondary school seemed to better meet their social, emotional and behavioural needs, whereas for the least successful group the increased independence and freedom was often experienced as overwhelming. This study provides a unique insight into the primary to secondary transition for YP with SEBD.

Eukaryotic initiation factor 2B (eIF2B) is a heteropentameric guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that converts inactive eIF2 GDP-bound binary complexes into active eIF2 GTP-bound complexes that can bind initiator t-RNA molecules and ribosomes to begin translation. eIF2B is functionally divided into two subcomplexes: the catalytic core comprised of eIF2B epsilon and eIF2B gamma, and the regulatory core comprised of eIF2B alpha, eIF2B beta and eIF2B delta. While the catalytic subunits are responsible for exerting GEF activity, the regulatory subunits recognize eIF2 and respond to eIF2 alpha phosphorylation. Cellular stress, such as virus infection, inhibits host protein synthesis by activating specific kinases that are capable of phosphorylating the alpha subunit of eIF2, which can then sequester eIF2B to stall guanine nucleotide exchange by a currently unresolved mechanism. Importantly, we demonstrate that loss of eIF2B alpha or expression of a variant of the human eIF2B alpha subunit harboring a single point mutation (T41A) is sufficient to neutralize the consequences of eIF2 alpha phosphorylation, and render primary MEFs significantly more susceptible to vesicular stomatitis virus infection. To extend this analysis, we further exhibit the vital function of eIF2B alpha in protein synthesis through phenotypic studies in yeast. Here, we report that this subunit can sufficiently substitute for its yeast counterpart, GCN3, and reproduce similar growth phenotypes under normal and amino acid deprived conditions. In addition, the human eIF2B alpha-T41A variant was unable derepress GCN4 translation in response to an inhibitor of amino acid biosynthesis in yeast, an activity that requires sensitivity to phosphorylation of the yeast eIF2 alpha homolog, SUI2. Previously, we have demonstrated that vesicular stomatitis virus can infect and replicate to high levels in tumor cells. Moreover, these cells appear to contain defects in eIF2 alpha-mediated translational control, plausibly due to disregulation of eIF2B activity, which overcomes the inhibitory effects of eIF2 alpha phosphorylation. Our data suggest a role for eIF2B, specifically eIF2B alpha, in suppression of translation following virus infection, and imply that this complex may contribute to oncogenic transformation. These results emphasize the importance of eIF2B alpha in mediating eIF2 kinase translation inhibitory activity and may provide insight into the complex nature of viral oncolysis and cellular transformation.

Even though the official kick-off of special education was witnessed in 1960 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its history dates back to 1958 following the individual efforts of Ahmad Aba Hussein to teach the Braille system to a group of blind people who later proceeded to teach other blind people at their homes. Despite making substantive progress towards ensuring that students with special needs have better access to education through the enactment of various policy frameworks, there is still a lot that needs to be done to realize an inclusive education curriculum for all. Notably, students with Down syndrome and autism have, for a long time, been disadvantaged in terms of their access to schools due to the stereotypical attitude that they were unteachable. Therefore, the current research study investigated the factors associated with the academic success of fourth- and fifth-grade autistic and Down syndrome students’ successful transition in Saudi Arabia’s public schools. The study employed a qualitative research approach whereby interviews were used to gather relevant evidence. Study participants were selected randomly, and included four special school teachers in one of Saudi Arabia’s public schools, one education administrator, one counsellor and eight parents. The researcher used interviews to ask participants questions related to the variables in the study. The findings of this study indicated that teachers believe that schools can adapt the classroom learning environment to address the needs of students with disabilities. Teachers also agreed that having high expectations for students with Down syndrome and autism encouraged them to perform better and showed positive results. Generally, the results showed that offering a conducive learning environment for children with special needs enabled them to attain better academic achievements. The findings indicated that it is important to give teachers proper and continuous training so that they can address the needs of autistic and Down syndrome students. The major results of the study demonstrated that schools should place students in safe and conducive learning environments. Overall, it is hoped that the findings of this study will inform policy changes aimed to address the needs of autistic and Down syndrome students.

This thesis addresses the three principal questions concerning the development of CT urography for investigating haematuria and each question is the subject of a separate chapter. The questions are: What is the reasoning behind using CT urography? What is the optimum diagnostic strategy using CT urography? What are the problems with using CT urography and how may solutions be provided? Haematuria can signify serious disease such as urinary tract stones, renal cell cancer, upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC) and bladder cancer (BCa). CT urography is defined as contrast enhanced CT examination of kidneys, ureters and bladder. The technique used here includes unenhanced, nephrographic and excretory-phases for optimized diagnosis of stones, renal masses and urothelial cancer respectively. The reasoning behind using excretory-phase CT urography for investigating haematuria is based on results showing its high diagnostic accuracy for UTUC and BCa. Patients with haematuria are classified as low risk or high risk for UTUC and BCa, by a risk score, determined by the presence/absence of risk factors: age > 50 years, visible or nonvisible haematuria, history of smoking and occupational exposure. The optimum diagnostic strategy for patients at high risk for urothelial cancer, uses CT urography as a replacement test for ultrasonography and intravenous urography and as a triage test for flexible and rigid cystoscopy, resulting in earlier diagnosis and potentially improving prognosis. For patients at low risk, ultrasonography, unenhanced and nephrographic-phase CT urography are proposed as initial imaging tests. Problems with using CT urography include false positive results for UTUC, which are eliminated by retrograde ureteropyelography-guided biopsy, an innovative technique, for histopathological confirmation of diagnosis. In order to understand how hadrons acquire their physical properties from their constituents, we must resort to the underlying theory of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, the non-perturbative nature of this theory in the relevant energy scales renders the standard perturbative methods ineffective. The formulation of QCD on a discrete space-time lattice allows for a first principles, non-perturbative approach to studying the strong interaction, in a manner well suited to numerical computation. Over the past decade, the use of variational techniques has provided an effective framework for spectroscopic studies of the full hadron spectrum. Herein we generalise the use of the variational approach to hadron form factor calculations and examine its use in a number of different hadronic systems. As such an approach allows for the isolation of terms relevant to a single eigenstate or eigenstate transition, we show that this method is both an effective way to remove excited state contamination from the study of ground state systems and an effective framework through which one can study the structure of hadronic excitations. We begin with an evaluation of the nucleon axial charge, gᴀ, to investigate the improvement offered through this method and consider the role that excited states play in the discrepancy observed between lattice determinations and experiment. This is followed by a determination of the ρ-meson electromagnetic form factors Gс, Gм and GQ [Q subscript], and the corresponding radiative transition form factor Gм₁ using near physical masses. We then turn our attention to the electromagnetic form factors of the two lowest-lying negative parity nucleons, where such techniques are required to disentangle the contributions of these two near degenerate states. Here we present the first evaluation of the elastic form factors Gᴇ and Gм for both these low-lying states. Finally, through careful consideration of the Nγ → N* vertex, we develop an innovative formalism that allows one to evaluate radiative transition form factors for all spin-1/2 nucleon excitations. This novel formalism is implemented to provide the world’s first examination of the odd-parity transitions of the nucleon in lattice QCD.
