Advocates of transit suggest that there are several important social benefits of transit systems—savings in pollution, congestion, and general social costs. Estimates of such savings have been limited to general comparisons with the personal occupancy vehicle (POV) mode usually on a vehicle-miles-traveled basis. Those savings are simulated in the context of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). It is estimated that between 1980 and 1994, MARTA generated about $2.2 billion in total social cost savings by diverting POV riders to transit. Compared with the POV alternative, MARTA generates an average of about $107 million annually in savings to society even after considering society’s subsidies to transit. Shortcomings of the analysis and policy implications are discussed.

<p>The aim of the research is to describe and discess the policy cycle of Bus Rapid Transit, the polemic in the policy of bus rapid transit, and the involvement of the stakeholder and their role in bus rapid transpit policy in Bandar Lampung. This research uses post positivistic paradigm with the approach of qualitative descriptive research method. This research resulted as: firstly, the bus rapid transit is an derivative regulation of Act No. 22 2009 regarding Traffic and Road Transport, aimed to reduce traffic jam in Bandar Lampung city. Secondly, the policy of bus rapid transit was arranged stage-by-stage with a full iniative from the Municipal goverement of Bandar Lampung, collaborated with the leading sector from Transportation Bureau of Bandar Lampung, involving PT Trans Bandar Lampung as the management in charge. Thirdly, there was a polemic of bus rapid transit policy regarding the monopoly of route of people transportation by the bus rapid transit, special treatment to bus rapid transit which don’t pay bus station retribution which is unfair, and there was some illegal fees on the employee in PT Trans .Bandar Lampung. Fourthly, the of bus rapid transit involves many stakeholders, such as Ministry of Transportatio of The Republic of Indonesia, |Transportation Bureau of Bandar Lampung City, The Regional Representatives Council of Bandar Lampung, Road Transportation Organization of Bandar Lampung, PT. Trans Bandar Lampung, Perum DAMRI Bandar Lampung, Lampung Region of Indonesia Transportation Society, Communication Forum of Public Car Transportation Bandar Lampung, CV. Good connectivity and accessibility ensure inclusivity of public transport system which is an indicator of a fair society. The modal shift of commuters towards public transit services depends majorly on its accessibility levels. To ensure that commuters have equal opportunities to access jobs, education, and other services, PTAL (public transit accessibility level) is often evaluated. Public transport accessibility levels are a detailed and an accurate measure of accessibility of a point to the public transport network which considers walk access time and service availability. Public transportation is often referred to as an affordable model for every section of society due to its cheap fare price. The major question lies in the inclusivity of public transit services for the economically weaker section of society whether or not public transportation is available and accessible for those who need it or those who cannot afford other mobility services. The present study intends to focus on affordable and inclusive transportation for economically weaker sections. The study is an attempt to assess the issues with public transport services in the city of Bhopal, India for economically backward areas like slums. The research will help in understanding the accessibility level of currently available public transit services by evaluating the PTAL (public transit accessibility level) for socially backward.

Large-scale technological projects are born as visions among politicians and leaders of industry. For such visions to become real, they must be transformed from a virtual existence in the minds of their creators to a reality that can be accepted, even welcomed, by the public, not least by the communities who will become neighbors to those projects. Democracy implies that political decisions over the expenditure of public funds should answer not merely to the partial interests of stakeholders but should be accountable to the 'greater good' of society at large. Since a technological project materializes in what Latour calls a 'variable ontology-world', the greater good associated with it can be expected to be dynamic and shifting. The Hallandsås railway tunnel in southwestern Sweden illustrates how the very premises of the project's organizational logic have changed over time, the discourse of the greater good moving from an economical focus to an environmental one.

In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe our excavation and situate it within a wider debate about research practice in contemporary archaeology.

Consequently, we use linguistic terms to consider the amount of flow between regions. We use the terms such as very low, low, medium, high, and very high to describe the source, transit and destination designations of countries. We then determine source, transit and destination designations for regions by using a weighted average based on population of the countries in their respective region. Finally, we determine upper bounds in linguistic terms for the flow from and into a region.

The author explains and proves that in epochal changes at the crossroads of centuries and millennia, there are two similar, but in many ways different processes: transit and transition. Transit means the passage of some parts of the state through a complex and unique state in the direction of international independence. From an empirical perspective, transit proceeds in two ways: peacefully or in a conflict or. Transit is, in fact, another name for separation or secession. Transit secession in one state shapes several independent states. In that sense, transit is the exteriorization of national politics, its internationalization and geopoliticization. Although it manifests dramatically, tragically and catastrophically in the secession conflict, in the theoretical discourse of social, national and state changes, transit is covered by the process of transition. Therefore, the author recognizes three approaches to the relationship between transit and transition: transit that is partially differentiated from transition; transit that is fully differentiated from transition and transit equated to transition. The author advocates a clear and principled distinction between the phenomenon of transit and the phenomenon of transition. Finally, the paper emphasizes the chronopolitical moment of geopolitical metamorphoses in which transit precedes and in many ways determines the later transition. Transition as a socio-economic process, i.e. the political-economic structural transformation of the socialist into the capitalist society cannot be sufficiently understood without understanding the previous events of transit. It is precisely the Yugoslav case of the disintegration of a complex state that could be instructive for the current EU integration, and also certain multinational and mononational states that face the danger of extreme regionalism, autonomy and separatism.

This paper reports on the construction of masculinities in the narratives of 11 motorcyclists in Valledupar – Colombia. The aim was to establish the ways masculinities are expressed and recreated by motorcycle riders and the importance of motorcycles in these expressions. To do this, semistructured interviews were conducted to search for the evolution of their personal stories as men and on their relationship with motorcycles. We found that their masculinities are currently “in transit”: they vary from hegemonic manifestations to peripheral masculine ways of expression. Evidence of these transits can be grouped around four emerging categories: risk behavior, amusement settings, sexual expression and roles in public and private settings. Results show that, in some of these categories, the hegemonic patriarchal masculine logic prevails, especially through risky behaviors and motorcycle riding. However, other disruptive ways of expressing masculinities were found, motivated by the social transformations in equality policies, changes in interpersonal relationships and the participants’ own experiences. Supporting the transition process of masculinities is a large responsibility in social interventions seeking for a more equitable and fair society.

Rural transit services are generally considered a tool to alleviate immobility for the elderly, the handicapped, and the carless and a form of income redistribution to them from society at large. But their economic impacts on local economies and governments are seldom realized and quantified. This study estimates two important transfer impacts of rural transit service on local (county) economies and governments in Georgia: the overall economic impacts and the fiscal revenue impacts. This study analyzed economic benefits of three major transit rider types in rural Georgia: elderly riders, work trip riders, and school trip riders. It found that rural transit services have a significant and positive economic impact on the local economy, indicating that, in addition to providing mobility and accessibility to the transportation disadvantaged, rural transit services promote local economic development. The fiscal revenue impact of rural transit service varies depending on the availability and the amount of federal transit subsidy. If the current level of federal transit subsidy continues, the fiscal revenue impact is positive and is larger than 1.0 for the state as a whole. It shows that providing transit service can bring positive fiscal revenues to local governments, realizing that some fiscal revenues are transferred from the federal government. Without federal transit subsidies, local governments would need to pay for all the costs. The revenue impact thus would become smaller yet still positive and greater than 1.0.

“Outlay rate” is a measure of the lapsed time between the obligation of federal funds for some purpose and the actual drawdown, or expenditure, of those funds. Outlay rates are an important, though often unspoken, reason for the gradual withdrawal of federal operating support of public transit. Rationales for reducing and/or eliminating federal support of transit operations are examined, overall capital and operating outlay rates for a sample of transit operators in California are measured, and possible causes and effects of federal grant outlay rates are discussed. On average, transit operators do, in fact, expend operating grants more quickly than capital grants. However, the overall size of the grant is actually a better predictor of slow outlays than grant purpose. Although the revenues generated by unexpended transit grants represent real revenues to the treasury, the goal of the federal transit program clearly is not simply to maximize such revenues. Evidence from other studies suggests that strict separation of capital and operating grants contributes to less efficient, overcapitalized transit systems, and an emphasis on capital grants may cost the federal treasury in the form of reduced tax revenues resulting from the lower economic multiplier of capital versus operating grants. Thus, it is unlikely that society benefits from a “float-driven” federal transit subsidy policy. Because federal transit grants seek to generate an array of social and economic benefits far broader than interest earned from the float from unexpended grants, the costs of the current capital-oriented or possible capital-only programs should be more systematically considered.

The need for residential property in Jakarta continues to increase, especially for MBR (Low Income Society). The development of TOD (transit-oriented development) area in Jakarta should be able to answer the problem. The existence of MBR dwellings in the form of RUSUNA (simple flats) in transit areas should be a concern because they need more residential and public transportation. Their existence will maximize the use of mass transport and keep the transit area from exclusivity, then the sustainability of the TOD Area is maintained. The problem of RUSUNA TOD development lies in the high price of land and the absence of related regulation, so the developer or manager of TOD is reluctant to develop it. From these problems came the research question, it is true that the majority of transit users are MBR, so that the provision of RUSUNA TOD needs to be maximized. Then, what is the percentage of RUSUNA units required based on transit requirements. The method used is the mix method by spreading the questionnaires to the users of transit, the market of residential users of LebakBulus, and interviews to the experts and stakeholders. The data obtained will be analyzed and adjusted to the applicable regulations.

In order to systematically analyze the benefits of transit metropolis construction, the system dynamics (SD) theory was used to construct the transit metropolis SD simulation model from the four subsystems of economy, society, environment, and transportation supply and demand. The validity of the SD model was verified by the social and economic data of Nanchang City and the operational data of the bus company, and the quantitative simulation analysis was carried out by taking the construction of the transit metropolis in Nanchang as an example. The simulation results show that, in 2020, the number of motor vehicles in Nanchang will reach 1.13 million and the urban population will reach 5.71 million. It is necessary to build a transit metropolis for the sustainable development of urban transportation. In order to complete the transit metropolis creation goal of 60% of the public transit mobility sharing rate, the proportion of public transport investment in the total transportation investment needs to be adjusted from 0.25 to 0.35. As a result, Nanchang City will improve after the peak traffic congestion in 2022, indicating that the construction of the transit metropolis will have a positive effect on Nanchang. By developing new energy vehicles and low-emission vehicles, vehicle emissions will drop from 0.05 tons/year to 0.04 tons/year, and overall nitrogen oxide emissions will fall by 70%, which is significant for urban environments. The research results provide theoretical support for the significance of transit metropolis construction, and promote the sustainable development of urban transportation.

The most effective way to eliminate “gutter oil” is to put it into the recycling system through scientific planning so as to play its due role. To this end, an effective swill recycling device is proposed, which is able to turn waste into treasure and save energy. The device makes swill pretreatment, and separate it in transit. Owing to the high-efficiency pretreatment, this device not only increases the recycling output, but also relieves the loads of factories which produce biodiesel.

Time affects the development of people’s culture. In an era dominated by Millennial Generation, context in society slowly shifting. Linking millennial theme in the Angke Market environment, where the context of relationship between traditional market and public transportation produces an unfinished dialogue. The market slowly lost its meaning even though public transport crowds constantly increasing. Through this design, it is expected to produce architectural works that are able to answer the local dialogue from the Angke environment so that the two distinguished functions are able to live coexistently and mutually reinforce. To meet the needs of urban millennial society, the design used mixed programme method to combine elements of transit and imagery of fresh environment where the combination seeks new views in society, especially the millennial generation in responding the programs so that grows interest and interactions from within. The result of this study are a mixed strip between transit functions (train, metromini, and angkot), traditional fruit and vegetable markets, vertical urban farming, and millennial hangout places in the form of FnB areas. The emergence of new programs such as urban farming dan hangout facilities are responses to link transit and market program as well as contextualizing the prospects for future needs. Responding to the function and context of the surroundings, the Living Strip is expected to feel fresh, spacious, and light as an object that became norm in daily basis. AbstrakPerkembangan jaman berpengaruh pada perkembangan dari kebudayaan masyarakatnya. Dalam era yang didominasi generasi milenial, konteks dalam masyarakat kota perlahan mengalami pergeseran. Mengaitkan tema milenial pada lingkungan Pasar Angke, dimana konteks hubungan pasar tradisional dan kegiatan berkomuter antar-transportasi umum darat menghasilkan dialog yang belum selesai. Pasar kehilangan makna walau transportasi umum semakin sesak dipadati. Melalui desain ini, diharapkan dihasilkan karya arsitektur yang mampu menjawab dialog lokal dari lingkungan Angke tersebut sehingga kedua fungsi mampu hidup koeksisten dan saling menguatkan. Untuk dapat memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat milenial urban, desain menggunakan metode Mixed Program dengan memadukan unsur kegiatan transit dan imagery dari sebuah lingkungan yang segar/fresh dimana dari perpaduan tersebut dapat menciptakan pandangan baru dalam masyarakat terutama generasi milenial dalam merespon program-program yang ada sehingga memunculkan minat untuk berinteraksi dengan program-program yang disediakan dalam sebuah Living Strip. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah sebuah strip campuran fungsi transit (KRL, metromini dan angkot), pasar tradisional buah-sayur, vertical urban farming, dan fasilitas nongkrong milenial berupa area FnB. Kemunculan program baru berupa urban farming dan fasilitas nongkrong merupakan respon untuk mengaitkan program transit dan pasar sekaligus berkonteks pada prospek kebutuhan masa depan. Merespon fungsi dan konteks lingkungan sekitar, Living Strip didesain untuk terasa segar, lapang, dan ringan sebagai suatu objek yang nyaman digunakan dalam berkegiatan sehari-hari.

At present, arrival time information service and security supervision of public transit vehicles have become a hot issue of society and government departments. In this paper, a system for notifying passengers waiting for buses of the status of the vehicles, including the arrival times of vehicles at stops, is proposed. The system includes GPS devices located in the vehicles for determining the location of the vehicles along their routes. A server is coupled to the GPS devices for receiving the locations of vehicles, computing the arrival times of vehicles based on history data model, and publishing the information on website using RESTful API. Experiments on real datasets show that the system is a powerful tool for arrival time prediction of public transit vehicles.

In the past, transit had a monopoly over service to large segments of society: one-car families or those who could not afford to drive. Now transit competes with the automobile for most consumers’ travel. To increase trip making and attract new customers in a competitive market, transit agencies must refocus from an internally driven orientation aligned with providing public service to an externally driven orientation aligned with the mission of delivering products and service that meet consumer expectations and requirements. Descriptive results of research to identify customer requirements for design and delivery of high-quality transit service are reported. Nearly 500 customers and potential customers of King County Metro Transit in Seattle, Washington, completed questionnaires designed to identify important elements and their performance requirements for each. The questionnaire was developed with intensive customer input to ensure that wording reflected customer and not staff perceptions. Requirements for service design included the following: 15-min headways for work and personal travel; no transferring to work; and total travel time to work no more than 50 percent longer than by car. Customer requirements for service delivery among elements that customers considered important included the following: the bus never leaves the stop early; seats are clean and dry; arrival time to work is no more than 5 min late; and windows are in good repair. Nonriders who were potential customers rated service delivery elements of transferring comparablity with automobile travel time as more important than did riders. Riders were more likely than nonriders to require 15-min headways for work travel.

Commuter and local society, the users of Paotere local port who took round trip to small islands and other island as well, experienced redundancy of cost, time and travel distance in fulfilling their whole needs at the shore of Makassar. Traveling by using motorized vehicle at the shore of Makassar was taken due to the unavailability of needed goods in the port and its neighborhood within radius 500 meters. This research is aimed at establishing determination model of suitable location for spatial planning of coastal Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in order to eliminate redundancy of cost, time and travel distance. It applied expert system and spatial analysis method based on geographic information system (GIS). The result showed that the most suitable location for coastal TOD development was in local Port and its neighborhood, it was at some grids, 581-585 and 540-542 within walking radius. Used determination model was determination in which, relied on highest value of the location with supports from its neighborhood location as well and the correlation among; certainty factor, commuter’s activity and local society.

Background:The physical inactivity epidemic continues be one of the greatest public health challenges in contemporary society in the United States. The transportation industry is at greater risk of physical inactivity, compared with individuals in other sectors of the workforce. The aim of this study was to use the Nominal Group Technique, a focus group technique, to examine mass transit employees’ perceptions of the barriers to physical activity at their worksite.Methods:Three focus groups (n = 31) were conducted to examine mass transit employees’ perceptions of barriers to physical activity at the worksite.Results:Salient barriers included (1) changing work schedules, (2) poor weather conditions, and (3) lack of scheduled and timely breaks.Conclusions:Findings were consistent with previous research demonstrating shift work, poor weather, and lack of breaks can negatively impact mass transit employees’ ability to be physically active. Although physical activity barriers for this population have been consistent for the last 20 years, public health practice and policy have not changed to address these barriers. Future studies should include conducing focus groups stratified by job classification (eg, operators, maintenance, and clerical) along with implementing and evaluating worksite-based physical activity interventions and policy changes.

The introduction of new public transport systems can influence society in a multitude of ways ranging from modal choices and the environment to economic growth. This paper examines the determinants of light rail mode choice for medium- and long-distance trips (10 to 40 km) for a new light rail system in Flanders, Belgium. To investigate these choices, the effects of various transport system–specific factors (i.e., travel cost, in-vehicle travel time, transit punctuality, waiting time, access and egress time, transfers, and availability of seats) as well as the travelers' personal traits were analyzed by using an alternating logistic regression model, which explicitly takes into account the correlated responses for binary data. The data used for the analysis stem from a stated preference survey conducted in Flanders. The modeling results are in line with literature: most transport system–specific factors as well as socioeconomic variables, attitudinal factors, perceptions, and the frequency of using public transport contribute significantly to the preference for light rail transit. In particular, the results indicate that the use of light rail is strongly influenced by travel cost and in-vehicle travel time and to a lesser extent by waiting and access–egress time. Seat availability appeared to play a more important role than did transfers in deciding to choose light rail transit. The findings of this paper can be used by policy makers as a frame of reference to make light rail transit more successful.

Organizational culture is interpreted as a component of social management; the basic integralcharacteristic of which is an ordered system of values, representations, beliefs and normative patterns ofbehavior that provides optimal internal integration and external adaptation of an organization or socialinstitution. It is proved that public and non-governmental organizations act as voluntary associations ofcitizens aimed at achieving socially significant goals, realizing their own and collective needs withoutprofit, indicating the existence of a certain or ganizational structure.Transparent society is associated with the notion of democratic transit, which can be defined as apolitical process taking place in the existing legal state of the state and accompanied by a break in theinstitutes of the emerging political regime, the establishment and strengthening of a broad network ofdemocratic institutions of civil society and the strengthening of democratic functions of state powerstructures. Institutions of civil society in a transitive society are more adaptable to social transformations,creating the foundation for the formation of a democratic syste m of social governance.The structural components of organizational culture of the public sector of society are singled out:1) societal components (identity, archetypes of the leader); 2) value-normative components (values,organizational values and norms); 3) organizational and managerial components of organizational culture(style of management in the organization, structure of communication, socio-psychological climate). On the basis of the results of the sociological survey structural and informative features of organizationalculture in the public sector of Ukrainian society in the condit ions of democratic transit were revealed:1) in the measurement of societal components - the domination of social identity against the backdropof the strengthening of societal identity, the dominance of the creative functional in the archetype ofthe leader; 2) in the value-normative dimension - a relatively integrated value system, an orientationto the human resource and quality, the moral-psychological and communicative basis of social norms;3) in the measurement of organizational and managerial relations - the democratic and situational style ofmanagement, the average level of openness of information flows, positive socio-psychological climate.It has been determined that the development of civil society is an indicator of the democratic natureof social governance in the state, although it has certain differences in the possibilities of identifying,participating in the adoption of management decisions and their control in various sectors of society: thestate (especially in the field of management), commercial and private. Thus, democratic organizationalculture reflects the value-normative system of organizational-managerial relations of a democratic type ofsocial governance.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) applies health protocols to prove the serve during a pandemic. It is done to decrease the spread of COVID-19. Service quality is improved to the interests of the society that using the Jakarta MRT. MRT applies the health protocol named BANGKIT (Bersih, Aman, Nyaman, Go Green, Kolaborasi, Inovasi, and Tata Kelola). The research aims to know the satisfaction level towards user society satisfaction as the passenger of Jakarta MRT who rides MRT from Lebak Bulus Station. The researcher used the quantitative method and used Simple random sampling to take the sample. To calculate data, the researcher did a correlation test, linear regression analysis, hypothesis test, and determination coefficient. The result of this research showed that the service quality: reliable responsiveness, assurance, empathy, tangibles significantly had a strong connection towards society satisfaction. The questionnaire which contained 24 questions was valid and reliable because r table value was bigger than r count value and reliable value. The value of r2 determination coefficient was 74.8%. It means service quality (Independent) gave significant effect towards variable of society satisfaction. The researcher could conclude that there was a positive effect given by service quality towards society satisfaction.

AbstractAccelerated and increasingly complex patterns of international migration are correlated with the emergence of various types of transnational families and an ever-rising number of culturally and ethnically mixed couples. Once a typical emigration country, Turkey has recently been established as a transit and receiving society, where numerous Europeans settle due to emotional ties with Turkish citizens. This paper is based on a qualitative study of 10 mixed European-Turkish families based in Istanbul, carried out through in-depth interviews. The paper is divided into three parts. First, it examines the social characteristics of the research participants. Second, it analyses the reactions of family and friends to the mixed relationship. Third, it discusses four adaptation strategies of foreign partners to Turkish society – namely, integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization.

The article analyzes the impact of democratic transit on the transformation of historical memory in Spain. For a more detailed study, the author chose the holiday as an object that can be changed due to the widespread democratization of society. The author emphasizes that he considers the holiday as an element that contributes to the preservation of historical memory. The study confirms that the holiday is indeed an important element in the process of not only preserving historical memory, but also in the process of its transformation. In the article, the author divides the holidays into national, religious and regional in accordance with the impact on the functioning of society. The study shows that regional holidays are most vulnerable in conditions of democratic transit, as they are not always dedicated to "democratic" episodes of the history of Spain. Also, the regional holiday mostly reflects the national identity of the region, while the national holiday promotes the integration and universalization of world values. At the end of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that the holiday is a kind of identifier of the depth of transformations in society: the more serious and dynamic the transformations, the greater the changes are subject to regional traditional holidays. The discourse that has developed around some of the fundamental provisions of the regional holidays speaks of a conflict between the adherents of the" old "and"new order". According to the study, the emerging discourse has achieved changes in the external regulations of traditional holidays in accordance with the standards of a democratic society. In conclusion, the idea is that the introduced external changes can in the future affect the perception of history by younger generations, which will steadily lead to the deepest changes in the formation of the historical memory of Spain.

The article is based on the report “The Transit of Civilizations: Methodological and Prognostic Aspects of Civilizational Competition”. It is devoted to the analysis of methodological and prognostic aspects of diachronic civilizational competition in the process of the current transformation of Modernity into the new historical state, defined as Postmodernity. Methodological and prognostic aspects of this historical transit are analyzed. The general aim of the study is to observe effective strategies for behavior while in situations of complexity, volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity. Different methods of orientation, action and management in post-war period are described and the possibility of their further transformation up to the next epistemological revolution is discussed. There is also an attempt to present certain analytical tools. Civilization is a dynamic concept, a social analogue of evolution. The globalization of modernity is accompanied by post-modern individuation, the antipode of industrial culture and mass society. The process of splitting of political structures, genesis of technical and anthropological complexity, creation of cloud structures – all this distorts the modern World Order. System approach is usually used to study complexities, while view of the future is based on a combination of transdisciplinary analysis, global context and long-term perspective. New methodological approach is produced for replacing the globality with fractality, long-term prognostics with non-linear dynamics, and transdisciplinary generalizations with uniqueness. The article also analyzes the latest generation of methodologies that possibly will allow us to make decisions and effectively act in this complex environment full of wicked situations and processes as well as non-classical approaches, such as the mode of action based on the analysis of deep codes of evolution, the art of non-classical operative, synergetic behavior, phenomen of serendipity etc. Research of the innovative methodological and predictive tools is an imperative for sustainable development, taking into account the upcoming turbulence of the social environment.

The democratic choice of Ukraine was enshrined in most documents that determined the strategic directions of development of the state and society from the moment of gaining independence of the state. Nevertheless, the real progress of Ukraine on the way remains the subject of discussion. The real state of development of the institutions of a democratic society makes it doubtful that the country has passed the stage of consolidation in its democratic transit. The observed trends allow many international organizations to characterize the current state of development of the country's political system as hybrid. At the same time, experts observe the demodernization of the country and the ongoing degradation of the main political, civilian institutions. The article analyzes the features of the hybrid regime in Ukraine. An attempt is being made to determine how the real state of development of democracy corresponds to the state of public sentiment, expectations and political values. Using the provisions of the congruence theory, the author makes assumptions about the political consequences of the ongoing disagreement between the interests of society and political elites. The author concludes that the current state of development requires focused efforts of the state and political elites aimed at stimulating political convictions, emancipatory values that will dominate the mass consciousness, contributing to the progress of political modernization and overcoming the “rollbacks” in democratization. The implementation of a policy of macro-political identity, in which emancipation values will be reflected, can help to overcome demodernization tendencies and further advance Ukraine on the path of democratic transit.

Set against the background of the so-called refugee crisis in Germany in 2015/16, this article asks about the subjective value that refugees give different sources of information and examines whether they were making informed decisions during the various stages of their transit. Between November 2015 and April 2016, four focus groups and 36 in-depth interviews were conducted with Syrian and Iraqi refugees, as well as interviews with Iraqi experts in the media and civil society sectors, based on the theoretical concepts of network and broadcast feedback developed by Bakewell and Jolivet. The results show that, unlike the mass media, personal network and narrowcast feedback were the most important sources of information for the study's participants. While most of the interviewees felt adequately informed both before and during their transit, it was mainly after the refugees arrived in Germany that they experienced a deficit of information.

This article employs a contentious politics framework to examine the mobilization–repression nexus as it occurred in Ukraine from the 1990 Revolution on Granite, through the 2000-2001 Ukraine without Kuchma campaign and the 2004 Orange Revolution, to the 2013-2014 Euromaidan movement. Comparative analysis of these four cases suggests that developments in both the contentious and repressive repertoires resembled spirals: each campaign became more complex and of longer duration than the last, and each was driven by the repeated protester–government interactions and by the political, economic, and technological environment that changed over time. In the transit from autocracy to democracy, Ukrainian activists adopted and “normalized” political protest much more quickly than did the authorities. The activists creatively innovated as they borrowed from earlier dissent traditions and from other social movements abroad. For the government, the process of learning how to manage contention with means other than their usual repression tactics was much longer, and it is not over. As it slowly transits from Soviet past to democracy, Ukraine continues its development into a “social movement society.”

The article is dedicated to the publishing projects of doctor Haas, a Moscow medical man and philanthropist, and is based on the materials of the ecclesiastical censorship archival holdings. Haas published books aimed at the reforming of convicts who went to Siberia through transit prison. ‘On the margins’ of his enlightenment activities missionary publishing projects, addressed to the educated urban society, were established. Haas could not confine himself to working with prisoners; he wanted to offer the Russian society Christian literature following the traditions of post-Tridentine spirituality. By this time, books and reading had taken shape as a specific sociocultural institute in the educated noble society, where the knowledge of French was acquired from childhood. In such circumstances Haas aimed to ensure not the influence, but the assimilation of Western (Roman Catholic) Christian texts into the Russian culture. The state ban on proselytism rendered the implementation of the most of these projects impossible. However, the institute of the ecclesiastical censorship itself did not rouse inner remonstrance in him. The opinions of Haas and of censors, governmental officials, who regulated the publishing, concerning conversion were hardly divergent. All of them assessed religious conversion positively. The censors followed the orders of the government, accepting in Haas’s publishing projects everything that was in line with state legal norms and political attitudes of those times. The censors did not contradict when the members of the Prison Committee preached Christian kindness to rude and aggressive prisoners. But Haas’s attempts to promote Catholic authors in educated circles turned out to be inacceptable.

During this voyage, Wales was responsible for monitoring the performance of the chronometers. After returning from the Pacific, Wales took charge of the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital in London and, over the next two decades, he taught a succession of budding officers the principles of navigation.

Abstract Urban environments in post-socialist cities have generated new challenges for urban planners and decision makers. As one example, the transport infrastructure of Bratislava has not been adjusted with respect to increasing mobility and the transit problems of its intra-urban environment. An upgrading of the conventional railway networks within the city is one of the major opportunities which might considerably improve public transit capacities available for both intra-urban and regional (suburban) transport flows of passengers. Relevant studies on the population potential of residents supporting such upgrades are still lacking. In addition, a detailed database on population distributions within the intra-urban environments of Slovak cities is not yet available. Therefore, this paper attempts to introduce one of the possible methodological approaches leading to an estimation of population potential as an elementary precondition of intra-urban railway traffic effectiveness, in a society where a detailed database on population distribution is not available.

Ukraine is now actively experiencing mass immigration movements due to its location. For immigrants, it is rather a "transit country" on the EU route, but often it is in our country that the transit route ends. Research shows that immigrant children face several challenges in their educational lives. Among them are communication problems and discrimination that arise due to linguistic and cultural differences. Many countries experiencing immigration movements around the world often use multicultural approaches to education to address the educational issues of foreigners. That is why there is a need for a comprehensive study of the literature, and this study, in particular, will be useful for considering the topic as a whole. The results of the study showed that three main approaches to education could solve the problem of the integration of foreign children into Ukrainian society. Research methods are comparative analysis, generalization, systematization, synthesis, analogies, classification, grouping, correlation, and cluster analysis.

Ukraine is in a state of transformation, in search of an adequate social and political model. It’s going through a second transformational crisis. The depth and the way out of it showed the completed large electoral cycle – presidential, parliamentary, and local elections in 2019–2020. The degree of freedom available, the preference given by Ukrainian citizens to legal means of solving emerging political problems over any other, as demonstrated by the very fact of these elections and the manner in which they were conducted, are singled out this society and this new independent state on a common somewhat uncertain and dim background of the «post-Soviet space». All this makes Ukraine and its processes a litmus test of the ability and readiness of Ukraine and other newly independent States to resolutely democratize and modernize themselves in a coordinated manner. For Ukraine, a large electoral cycle, the way it ended, is both a challenge and a chance. How will she respond to and use it in the light of these important political developments? The proposed article attempts to answer this question.

AbstractThe geographical disadvantages faced by land-locked states place them in a particularly vulnerable position: unable to compete on equal trading terms with coastal neighbours, they are highly susceptible to all forms of economic and political ‘aggression’. Such measures produce more than the usual degree of ‘inconvenience’, but can so destabilise the state as to compromise its existence. Equity and the sanctity of ‘statehood’ require the protection of such states by furnishing them transit rights.Not only must international law recognise such rights as existing in one form or another, but must also provide adequate means of securing them. A society unwilling to redress natural imbalances and prepared to perpetuate an inherently unfair system is a society committed to conflict, rather than the maintenance of peace and security.

In the complex of political relations between society and power, one of the most vulnerable aspects is the transit or succession of power. An even more serious challenge to political stability is the change of the head of state for countries with unstable political institutions due to short history of independence, as a result of the lack of traditions and mechanisms for changing power, and the lack of stable institutions for the protection of private property. In such circumstances, the ruling class of these countries is looking for such scenarios of power transit that would ensure political and economic stability and continuity, as well as guarantee security and property rights for the outgoing heads of state and their entourage. The optimal scenario in this case is a successor scenario with the coming of power of the candidate chosen by the outgoing head, who would guarantee the fulfillment of these conditions. But in the newly independent States, which include the former republics of the USSR, with an extreme level of sacralization and absolutization of power, its transfer even to a trusted person carries risks for the ruling circles. As a result, the dynastic scenario of the transfer of Supreme power in the state as a rule to the son of the head is chosen as the solution, which allows solving all the key tasks for transit. This scenario was implemented in 2003 in Azerbaijan. The purpose of the research is to identify the reasons for choosing such a mechanism of power transfer based on a systematic and comparative analysis of existing precedents for implementing the dynastic scenario of power transit in the post-Soviet space. Practical work with the analysis of the causes and mechanisms of power transfer within the family will reveal the impact of this mechanism on the development of political institutions in the selected countries.

Based on the 2000–2018 comparative studies of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), the author presents the process of transition of the “Putin era” from the stage of consolidation built upon public consensus achieved at the beginningof the “zero” (нулевых) years to the current stage of value crisis that arose in 2012–14 and lasts to this day. Although the current state of society canno tbe unequivocally interpreted as a split, contradictions in the system of values are growing. Implementation of the idea of a strong state is delegated to social groups that are least modernized. Moreover, within the state itself, frustration has been growing among the whole society. The increasing demand for change has not yet been materialized in the form of any political “body”, which makes the inevitable transit of epochs extremely risky for the country and the society.
