Artistic practices in ethnological knowledge transfer can be found in the wellknown account of James Cook’s first voyage (1768–1771) by John Hawkesworth (Account of the Voyages […] in the Southern Hemisphere, 1773), which shows that such travel accounts are not only vehicles of knowledge transfer but also means of knowledge (re)construction, and at times this process of remolding knowledge extends to a rewriting that includes elements of fiction. Hence, the article will draw on the material assembled by Cook and Joseph Banks in their Endeavour Journals to identify in Hawkesworth’s examples of (ethno-aesthetic) knowledge construction and “invention.” A comparison of the diff erent types of texts is rewarding not least because Hawkesworth’s account strove to present the new knowledge to a broader audience. An identification of Hawkesworth’s departures from his sources facilitates the reading of the act of knowledge transfer as a process of knowledge transformation.

This essay offers a short overview of feminist history of science and introduces a new project into that history, namely feminist history of colonial science. My case study focuses on eighteenth-century voyages of scientific discovery and reveals how gender relations in Europe and the colonies honed selective collecting practices. Cultural, economic, and political trends discouraged the transfer from the New World to the Old of abortifacients (widely used by Amerindian and African women in the West Indies).1

Recent historical and sociological work has used the notion of the inscription device to account for European sciences' long-range powers. Such devices are supposed to generate traces of encounters and observations, which can then be mobilized and combined elsewhere along complex networks of travel and information transfer. Europeans' voyages in the South Seas have often been used to illuminate this process. This paper examines an episode of 1792 when a British astronomer was invited to tattoo a Marquesan chief by the chief himself. The episode suggests intriguingly symmetrical relations between acts of inscribing, writing, and tattooing and analyzes the ways inscriptions worked in such encounters. Assumptions about European authority and indigenous difference can thus be reexamined.

AbstractInterstellar Migrations may occur when a civilization’s star enters the Red Giant phase, thereby dooming the life-bearing planet(s). Ecologically self-contained «world ships», massing billions of kilograms and propelled by hyperthin, space-manufactured solar sails thousands of kilometers in diameter unfurled near the home star are possible vehicles to transfer a threatened civilization to a neighboring star. Consideration of the nearest Red Giants reveals that Pollux is the nearest formerly solar-type Red Giant. Known stellar neighbors of Pollux are surveyed to determine likely directions for an interstellar migration departing Pollux. Such migrations might consist of many world ships launched over millenia on voyages of about 1000 terrestrial-year duration; discovery of such events will be serendipitous. The difficulties of observing solar-sail star ships near Pollux are considered. A facility dedicated to imaging extrasolar planets within 10 parsecs might be capable of detecting these large spacecraft.

Abstract Much has been written of the Columbian exchange, the transfer between New World and Old of people, pathogens, flora and fauna. The biota of two hemispheres, once seemingly irredeemably separated, were interpenetrated, both through accident and through human agency. Part of this exchange involved medicinal and food plants, discovered in the New World and adopted into the Old. This paper examines the translation of a number of New World plants that were part of the 'Cartierian' or 'Champlinian' exchange that followed the voyages to North America by Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) between 1534 and 1541, and the explorations and settlements undertaken by Samuel de Champlain (1580?-1635) from 1603 to his death at Quebec in 1635. During this period, a number of North American plants were propagated in European nurseries and even found their way into everyday use in gardens or kitchens. How were these new plants viewed on their introduction and how were they incorporated into Europe's "vegetable" consciousness? Where did these new plants fit in the classification of the edible and the exotic?

The article analyzes the collections from the ethnographic fund of the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology of Moscow State University, which characterize the material culture of the indigenous inhabitants of the Marquesas and Hawaiian Islands, as well as the Sitka Island. The archival documents of the Rumyantsev Museum, stored in the Department of Manuscripts of the Russian State Library, and the scientific archives of the Museum of Anthropology (transfer certificates, inventories, and labels) were used for reconstruction of the items’ origin. The collections were also analyzed according to the history of their collecting by Y.F. Lisyansky during his voyage on the Neva ship and compared with the textual and visual information in the published materials of the participants of the first Russian round-the-world expeditions. Results and discussion. The collections entered the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology in the 30s and 40s of the XX century from the Museum of Peoples of the USSR - the heir of the Department of Foreign Ethnography of the Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museum. We discovered and introduced into scientific circulation documents from the Rumyantsev Museum archive that allows to conclude that the collections belong to the first national round - the - world voyages and the oldest part of the ethnographic gathering. These documents significantly expand our knowledge on the volume and composition of Count N.P. Rumyantsev ethnographic collection transferred from St. Petersburg to Moscow. They show that this collection includes artefacts of indigenous inhabitants of the islands through which the route of the ship «Neva» under the leadership of Y.F. Lisyansky passed. A comprehensive analysis of the collections and documents confirmed the presence of artifacts received from Y.F. Lisyansky in the ethnographic storage of the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology of Moscow State University. For the first time, the composition of the collections belonging to the oldest part of our ethnographic collection, originating from the participants of the first Russian circumnavigation, has been published.

Republic of Indonesia Ship (KRI) Dewaruci is a Naval Academy Cadets' (AAL) training ship that is old. Thiscondition is very susceptible to various threats of accidents while carrying out voyages around the world to cruisethe AAL Kartika Jala Krida Kadet. The government has planned to replace KRI Dewaruci with a new trainingship. This study aims to determine the selection of new prospective makers training ship by the Analytic NetworkProcess (ANP) method. This ANP method is used because the existing data have a relationship among thecriteria and the relationship between criteria and sub-criteria. In alternative selection, there are two main criteria,namely operational requirements criteria with four sub-criteria: security, geographical conditions, skills training,transfer of technology and technical requirement criteria with five sub-criteria: machinery, navigation, trainingequipment, platform, masts, and sails. The results of this study are the alternative priorities for new training shipreplacing the best KRI Dewaruci and also the priority of the main/critical sub-criteria. Abstract. Establishing the relationship between marine boundary layer (MBL) aerosols and surface water biogeochemistry is required to understand aerosol and cloud production processes over the remote ocean and represent them more accurately in earth system models and global climate projections. This was addressed by the SOAP (Surface Ocean Aerosol Production) campaign, which examined air–sea interaction over biologically productive frontal waters east of New Zealand. This overview details the objectives, regional context, sampling strategy and provisional findings of a pilot study, PreSOAP, in austral summer 2011 and the following SOAP voyage in late austral summer 2012. Both voyages characterized surface water and MBL composition in three phytoplankton blooms of differing species composition and biogeochemistry, with significant regional correlation observed between chlorophyll a and DMSsw. Surface seawater dimethylsulfide (DMSsw) and associated air–sea DMS flux showed spatial variation during the SOAP voyage, with maxima of 25 nmol L−1 and 100 µmol m−2 d−1, respectively, recorded in a dinoflagellate bloom. Inclusion of SOAP data in a regional DMSsw compilation indicates that the current climatological mean is an underestimate for this region of the southwest Pacific. Estimation of the DMS gas transfer velocity (kDMS) by independent techniques of eddy covariance and gradient flux showed good agreement, although both exhibited periodic deviations from model estimates. Flux anomalies were related to surface warming and sea surface microlayer enrichment and also reflected the heterogeneous distribution of DMSsw and the associated flux footprint. Other aerosol precursors measured included the halides and various volatile organic carbon compounds, with first measurements of the short-lived gases glyoxal and methylglyoxal in pristine Southern Ocean marine air indicating an unidentified local source. The application of a real-time clean sector, contaminant markers and a common aerosol inlet facilitated multi-sensor measurement of uncontaminated air. Aerosol characterization identified variable Aitken mode and consistent submicron-sized accumulation and coarse modes. Submicron aerosol mass was dominated by secondary particles containing ammonium sulfate/bisulfate under light winds, with an increase in sea salt under higher wind speeds. MBL measurements and chamber experiments identified a significant organic component in primary and secondary aerosols. Comparison of SOAP aerosol number and size distributions reveals an underprediction in GLOMAP (GLObal Model of Aerosol Processes)-mode aerosol number in clean marine air masses, suggesting a missing marine aerosol source in the model. The SOAP data will be further examined for evidence of nucleation events and also to identify relationships between MBL composition and surface ocean biogeochemistry that may provide potential proxies for aerosol precursors and production.

Écrivain allemand francophone travaillant sur l’Amérique latine dont il a contribué à fonder l’identité politique et scientifique Alexander von Humboldt qui a travaillé 20 ans dans le milieu des savants parisiens à la préparation éditoriale de son Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du nouveau continent (30 volumes en français) incarne un transfert culturel triangulaire paradigmatique. Le présent article vise à analyser les mécanismes de naturalisation en France de Humboldt à travers deux revues qui accompagnent la diffusion de son œuvre les Annales et Nouvelles Annales des Voyages et la Revue des deux mondes, cette dernière plus particulièrement centrée sur l’acclimatation de la grande œuvre en langue allemande le Cosmos. On a pu de même reconnaître jusque dans des œuvres fondamentales du modernisme brésilien des réminiscences du texte humboldtien sur la nature d’Amérique du Sud.

Dans la lignée des travaux de l'historien allemand Peter Reichel sur la notion de fascination totalitaire et du mouvement historique initié en France par Fred Kupferman, François Hourmant ou encore Sophie Cœuré autour du voyage des intellectuels en Union soviétique dans les années 1930, cette thèse a pour objectif de dénouer les rouages du voyage en terre nazie, de l'accession d'Adolf Hitler à la chancellerie jusqu'à la déclaration du second conflit mondial. Thématique délaissée par l'historiographie du national-socialisme préférant voir dans le voyage une évidence anecdotique relevant des nécessités diplomatiques, elle s'impose cependant à l'historien devant la masse d'archives léguées. Engluée et limitée jusque-là dans la représentation classique d'un Brasillach devant la « cathédrale de lumière » de Nuremberg ou du sort des délégations étrangères aux Jeux olympiques de Berlin 1936, la pratique du voyage ne peut se résumer à une vision archétypale voulant que seul le « fasciste en formation » ne parcoure un IIIème Reich réduit à quelques points névralgiques. A partir de sources issues du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, de périodiques, de récits de voyages et d'ouvrages rétrospectifs (mémoires, correspondances, écrits privés), ce travail s'articule autour de trois axes allant de l'intérêt de l'étude du déplacement dans la compréhension d'un phénomène totalitaire, aux temps du voyage (accueil, séjour sur place, réception du voyage) tout en analysant le rôle du voyage et son degré d'implication dans la formation d'une bienveillance personnelle ou d'un rejet du totalitarisme. Un des intérêts fondamentaux de l'étude du voyage en Allemagne hitlérienne réside dans les motivations préalables conduisant au déplacement. Le voyage est avant tout objet d'histoire vécu et perçu par ceux qui l'entreprennent. Cette conscience du « moment d'histoire » entrepris amène à étudier les motivations structurelles du voyage (intérêt pour la modernité politique, déconstruction de son propre modèle national, naissance d'une diplomatie parallèle) comme existentielles (inspiration morale, dépassement de la frontière de la germanité), tout en mettant en avant l'étonnante diversité des voyageurs (origine géographique, culturelle et sociale), signe de l'attraction magnétique du national-socialisme au-delà des frontières (insertion dans le débat de la place de la spécificité nationale dans le cadre d'un minimum fasciste). Préalable indispensable à toute compréhension du phénomène, les temps du voyage permettent d'éclairer la construction d'une véritable politique nazie à l'égard du voyageur étranger d'une part, de souligner la prégnance des réseaux et contacts d'autre part. L'étude du temps sur place sera orientée autour de l'impression de l'accessible rencontrée par les voyageurs. Le temps du retour d' « Hitlérie », fait d'une variété de la forme et de l'usage, permettra de mettre en avant l'obligation naturelle, morale - voire politique - de relayer les impressions de la « chose vue ». Enfin, le voyage comme maçon d'une nouvelle image de l'Allemagne dans les mentalités collectives étrangères viendra clore ce travail. La construction de l'image totalitaire semble aller de pair avec une tentative de rationalisation de l'aveuglement rencontré quand, pour d'autres, le voyage est un mécanisme de résistance. La place du voyageur face à la question juive devient également nécessité. D'une tribune offerte à l'antisémitisme aux premiers actes de dénonciation, le voyage devient un outil de la pensée intellectuelle. La conscience d'un totalitarisme naissant fait du voyageur un homme éclairé, noyé dans la masse de la dérive fasciste transnationale ayant fait ses armes idéologiques dans le Reich
In line with the studies by German historian Peter Reichel concerning the fascination of totalitarianism and the historical movement initiated in France by Fred Kupferman, along with the studies by François Hourmant and Sophie Coeuré regarding intellectuals traveling in Soviet union in the 1930's, the objective of this thesis is to describe the experience of the voyage on Nazi territory, from Hitler's accession to power to the beginning of World War II. This theme has been disregarded in the national-socialism historiography, due to the fact that they viewed the voyage as an anecdotic evidence of diplomatic duty. However, the amount of archives bequeathed on this topic led historians to believe that it is more relevant than previously thought. Limited to the classical image of Brasillach in front of the “Cathedral of Light” of Nuremberg as well as the image of foreign delegations during the Olympic Games of Berlin in 1936, the act of traveling shouldn't be reduced to this archetypal vision implying that only the “future fascists” would travel and discover the IIIrd Reich. Using sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, newspapers, travel logs, essays, and letters, this work hinges on three parts covering the significance to study the voyage with the goal to understand the totalitarianism phenomenon, the different stages of the voyage (the reception, their stay, the return to their countries of origin), and to analyze the role and the importance of the voyage in the development of either an acceptance or a rejection towards the totalitarianism. One of the main interests in studying the voyage in Hitler's Germany is the reasoning behind the motivation for the voyage to take place. Traveling is at first a moment in history lived and perceived by those who experience it. This awareness of the experienced moment in history leads us to study the structural motivations of this voyage (interest for modern politics, deconstruction of our own national model, beginning of a parallel diplomacy) and also the existential motivations (moral inspiration, surpassing the line of “germanity”) while underlining the surprising diversity of the travelers (geographical, cultural and social origin), which shows the power of attraction of the national-socialism far across the borders. Prior to understanding this phenomenon, the different phases of the voyage help to enlighten the construction of a specific Nazi policy towards the foreign traveler on one hand, and to underline the existence and development of a real network of contacts on the other. This component will examine how the model of national-socialism seemed attainable for the travelers. The return from Germany will bring to the forefront the feeling of obligation for the travelers to explain and describe what had been experienced during the travel. Finally, the voyage as propagator of a new image of Germany in foreigner's minds will complete this study. The shaping of the totalitarian image seems to go hand in hand with an attempt to rationalize the obliviousness of a part of the population, while for others the voyage is a mechanism of resistance. The standpoint of the travelers towards the Jew's situation is also necessary to broach. Like a window that offers a view on anti-Semitism and the first acts of denunciation, the voyage becomes a tool of intellectual thinking. The awareness of this rising totalitarianism makes the traveler a knowledgeable man, lost in the masses, sliding in this transnational fascism first learned in the Reich

Метою даної роботи є дослідження голосових сигналів у частотній та часовій області для ідентифікації об’єктивних параметрів, що дозволяють класифікувати голос людини за емоційним забарвленням. За проведеними дослідженнями розроблене програмне забезпечення із використанням програмного пакету Mathlab 2014a. У результаті виконання роботи: створено нові методи обробки голосу, які передбачають використання для характеристики психологічного типу людини; отримані результати, які в подальшому можуть бути використані в психіатрії для якісної оцінки емоційно-вольових порушень при різних психо-паталогіях; для оцінки кадрового потенціалу працівників; важливим застосуванням подібних методів можуть стати правоохоронні системи та засоби безпеки в напрямку виявлення агресивно забарвлених голосів; розроблено програмне забезпечення, що дозволяє класифікувати голос людини в залежності від її емоційного стану.
The purpose of this work is to study the voice signals in the frequency and time domain for the identification of objective parameters that allow to classify a person's voice by emotional coloring According to the research, software was developed using the Mathlab 2014a software package. As a result of the work: created new methods of voice processing, which provide for use to characterize the psychological type of person; obtained results that can be used in psychiatry for qualitative evaluation of emotional and volitional disorders in various psychological pathologies; to assess staffing potential of employees; law enforcement systems and security measures in the direction of detecting aggressively colored voices may become an important use of such methods; Software has been developed that allows you to classify a person's voice depending on her emotional state.
Целью данной работы является исследование голосовых сигналов в частотной и временной области для идентификации объективных параметров, позволяющих классифицировать голос человека по эмоциональной окраске. По проведенным исследованиям разработанное программное обеспечение с использованием программного пакета Mathlab 2014a. В результате выполнения работы: созданы новые методы обработки голоса, которые предусматривают использование для характеристики психологического типа человека; полученные результаты, которые в дальнейшем могут быть использованы в психиатрии для качественной оценки эмоционально-волевых нарушений при различных психо-патологии; для оценки кадрового потенциала работников; важным применением подобных методов могут стать правоохранительные системы и средства безопасности в направлении выявления агрессивно окрашенных голосов; разработано программное обеспечение, позволяющее классифицировать голос человека в зависимости от его эмоционального состояния.

Au coeur de la culture et de l'histoire européennes depuis plus de deux mille ans, le Rhin faitl'objet d'une abondante littérature. La fascination qu'il exerce s'accompagne généralementd'une focalisation sur certains secteurs de son cours dont la Suisse semble exclue, alors que lefleuve prend sa source dans ce pays et qu'il le traverse ou le longe sur environ 250 kilomètres.La Suisse étant, surtout depuis le milieu du XVIIIe siècle, une destination de voyage trèsprisée, l'objectif de notre recherche a été de savoir si l'intérêt apparemment limité pour leRhin helvétique valait également dans le domaine de la littérature de voyage. Basé surl'analyse de guides, d'ouvrages descriptifs et iconographiques et de récits de voyage, leprésent travail a pour objet de mettre en lumière les représentations du fleuve depuis sessources jusqu'à Bâle telles qu'elles ont été véhiculées par la littérature viatique européenne duXVe au XIXe siècle. Notre corpus ne se limitant pas à la sphère germanophone, nous abordonsl'image du Rhin suisse sous un angle comparatiste et proposons un panorama européen desreprésentations en question. Pourtant, la conception d’une région de la mer Baltique étaitdéjà fondée à l’époque de la «Sattelzeit» sur le besoin de pouvoir situer les riverains de la merBaltique comme une unité culturelle, quelque part dans le grand Nord. Dans l’imaginationdes voyageurs en 1800, la région de la mer Baltique est en fait déjà cet espace d’interactionset d’imbrications qui constitue la base évidente des approches modernes de la recherche.Bien sûr, il y avait les divers royaumes, provinces ou villes qui jouèrent un rôle pour lesvoyageurs. Cela ne signifie pourtant pas qu’il soit impossible de retrouver dans les récits devoyages certains points communs, manifestés sous forme d’un caractère «nordique»supérieur de ces riverains. C’est pourquoi ce caractère «nordique» est sans cesse exprimédans les récits de voyages à partir de divers niveaux de perception – dans la description de lanature, de la mer, du climat, mais aussi dans les perceptions des villes et les rencontresculturelles. The data harvest from the Voyagers' (V1 and V2) Ultraviolet Spectrometers (UVS) covers encounters with the outer planets, measurements of the heliosphere sky-background, and stellar spectrophotometry. Because their period of operation overlaps with many ultraviolet missions, the calibration of V1. and V2 UVS with other spectrometers is invaluable. Here we revisit the UVS calibration to assess the intriguing sensitivity enhancements of 243% (V1) and 156% (V2) proposed recently. Using the Ly alpha airglow from Saturn, observed in situ by both Voyagers, and remotely by International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), we match the Voyager values to IUE, taking into account the shape of the Saturn Ly alpha line observed with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. For all known ranges of the interplanetary hydrogen density, we show that the V1 and V2 UVS sensitivities cannot be enhanced by the amounts thus far proposed. The same diagnostic holds for distinct channels covering the diffuse He I 58.4 nm emission. Our prescription is to keep the original calibration of the Voyager UVS with a maximum uncertainty of 30%, making both instruments some of the most stable EUV/FUV spectrographs in the history of space exploration. In that frame, we reassess the excess Ly alpha emission detected by Voyager UVS deep in the heliosphere, to show its consistency with a heliospheric but not galactic origin. Our finding confirms results obtained nearly two decades ago-namely, the UVS discovery of the distortion of the heliosphere and the corresponding obliquity of the local interstellar magnetic field (similar to 40 degrees from upwind) in the solar system neighborhood-without requiring any revision of the Voyager UVS calibration.

By studying the travel writings of North American merchants going to Great Britain between 1776 and 1815, we analyse the cultural transfers across the Atlantic and observe the growing emancipation of the young Republic from its former mother country. It appears that these merchants fully contributed to the creation of an American national identity. Their stay in Great-Britain undeniably encouraged this process, as it enabled visitors to measure themselves against a British « Other », to realise what made them truly American, to boast about their superiority, but also, as merchants, to defend specific values and a certain vision of the American society

Uranus is one of the least explored planets in our solar system. Event though the Uranian Ly-α emission has been a subject of study for decades, there is not a consensus on the sources contribution to the total signal. This thesis aims to analyse the contribution from scattering of the solar flux to the Uranian Ly-α dayglow by solving the radiative transfer equation in a parameter study for the atmosphere. The sources are solar Ly-α resonant scattering and Rayleigh scattering by atomic and molecular hydrogen respectively. The radiative transfer equation is solved using the Feautrier Method Program, a program written by Randall G. Gladstone. The program was adjusted to the Uranian atmosphere and modelled with different variations in parameters, including the atmospheric temperature and particle density of Ly-α scatterers and absorbers. A parameter study is performed to investigate the dependency on the Ly-α signal on these parameters. The results showed a significant Ly-α limb brightening with a maximum intensity located around 400 km outside one planetary radius as seen from the disk center. The contributions to the Ly-α dayglow from Rayleigh scattering by H2 was calculated to be 160 R whereas the contribution from resonant scattering by H was 550 R. One feature that prevents direct comparison to observed data with this thesis is that some sources that contributes to Uranus Ly-α signal are omitted in the simulations.

Från resultaten kan parameterstudien svara på beroendet av de olika källorna till Ly-α-signalen från Uranus. Resultaten visar en tydlig ökning av ljusintensitet vid Uranus kanter med maximum runt 400 km utanför planetens radie, sett från planetens mitt. Bidraget till Ly-α-signalen från Rayleigh stålningsspridning beräknades till 160 R och från resonant strålningsspridning till 550 R. En egenskap som hindrar direkt jämförelse med resultaten från detta examensarbete och observerad data är att alla bidragande källor till Uranus Ly-α signal inte simulerats.

Les visiteurs restent mal connus bien qu'ils soient les spectateurs de grandes manifestation architecturales. Leurs descriptions et leurs représentations des palais, des châteaux, mais aussi des églises, des ponts, des fortifications, des jardins et de leurs semblables permettent pourtant, une fois rassemblées, de définir le goût architectural d'une époque et d'une nation. Il était par conséquent primordial de constituer un corpus des textes et des images des XVIe et XVIIe siècles relatifs à l'architecture française et de l'analyser dans le détail. Les textes manuscrits, imprimés et les représentations graphiques laissés par les historiens, les antiquaires et les géographes, ainsi que les récits de voyages et les journaux rédigés par des notables curieux , des étudiants, voire des anonymes furent pris en compte pour répondre à trois grandes questions : qui sont les acteurs de cette réception, quelles sont les conditions de leurs visites et quels sont, à leurs yeux, les plus excellents bâtiments de France. Ces questions, si évidentes puissent-elles paraître, n'ont jamais été abordées. The reception of French architecture in the 16th and 17th centuries by French and foreign contemporaries is unquestionably lacking. Visitors remain unknown, even though they are the spectators of great architectural shows. Their descriptions and mental images of palaces and stately homes, and also of churches, bridges, fortifications, gardens and their like, however, once reassembled enable one, to define the architectural flavour of a period and of a nation. It was thus essential to build up a coprus of texts and images of the 16th and 17th centuries and to analyse them in detail. Handwritten texts, printed documents and graphic representations left behind by antique dealers and geographers as well as travel diaries and newspapers written by inquiring notaries, scholars or even anonymous people were all analysed in an attempt to answer three important questions, namely who are the people behind this reception? In which conditions did their vsits take place? And in their view, what are the most outstanding buildings in France? However self-evident these questions may seem, they have never been tackled. And yet they form the clues to our reading which must no longer be ignored, even more so as they conceal the details of architecture which transpires to be new, unique, and not to be missed

Ce travail permet d'approfondir les connaissances sur l'exposition des voyageurs aux polluants de l'air dans les autobus via des mesures représentatives en fonction du matériel roulant (Agora Long, Agora Standard), le taux de renouvellement de l'air, de la qualité de l'air extérieur et des paramètres du trafic routier. Les expériences ont été réalisées en étudiant la répartition des polluants dans l'habitacle, un sujet peu abordé jusqu'à présent dans la littérature. Sont quantifiées certaines sources de pollution comme le relargage des nouveaux matériaux et le transfert des effluents du bus vers sa cabine (auto-pollution). Dans le cadre de cette démarche, une campagne inédite a été créée pour quantifier l'auto-pollution minimum et maximum pour ces deux types de bus. Dans des conditions réelles de circulation, les concentrations en polluants (NO2, PM2.5, concentration en nombre des particules entre 0,02-1µm) ont été plus élevées dans les habitacles des bus par rapport au fond urbain. De plus il a été constaté des concentrations en NO2 plus faibles à l'avant par rapport à l'arrière du bus, position du pot d'échappement et du moteur. Cette surexposition a été expliquée par une auto-pollution plus importante à l'arrière par rapport à l'avant (0,13% contre 0,05% dans des conditions défavorables). Enfin l'influence du relargage des matériaux, du trafic routier, des ouvertures des portes, de la vitesse du vent sur les concentrations des polluants dans les habitacles des bus a été démontrée
This study can increase knowledge about the travelers' exposure to air pollution inside buses through measures based representative of rolling stock (Agora Long, Agora Standard), the air change rate, air outdoor quality and traffic parameters. The experiments were performed by studying the distribution of pollutants in the cabin, a subject little discussed in the literature. Some sources of pollution such as the material emissions and the transfer of bus exhaust in the cabin are quantified (self-pollution). As part of this approach, an unprecedented campaign was conducted to quantify the maximum and minimum self-pollution for both types of bus. In real traffic conditions, the pollutant concentrations (NO2, PM2.5, particle number concentration between 0.02-1µm) are higher in the instrumented buses compared to outdoors. Moreover the lowest concentrations of NO2 have been measured in the front of the cabin compared to the rear, the localization of exhaust pipe and the engine. This overexposure was explained by a self-pollution higher in the rear of the cabin compared to the front (0.13% against 0.05% in adverse conditions). Finally the influence of the material emissions, traffic, door openings, the wind speed on the pollutant concentrations inside buses have been demonstrated

Les méthodes d'optimisation pour les problèmes de tournées de véhicules permettent aujourd'hui de résoudre des problèmes prenant en compte de plus en plus de contraintes réalistes. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons à la résolution de problèmes de collectes et livraisons, et de transport à la demande, avec la particularité d'autoriser le transfert de passagers d'un véhicule à un autre. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons une méthode exacte basée sur la génération de colonnes pour résoudre un cas particulier appelée problème de collectes et livraisons avec navettes. Dans un deuxième temps, nous proposons des méthodes heuristiques performantes pour résoudre le problème de collectes et livraisons avec transfert (PDPT: Pickup and Delivery Problem with Transfers) et le problème de transport à la demande avec transferts (DARPT: Dial a Ride Problem with Transfers). Nous appliquons ces méthodes à l'optimisation du transport de personnes handicapées vers des écoles ou des établissements médico-sociaux, et montrons que l'utilisation des points de transfert peut contribuer à diminuer le coût de ces transports
Optimization methods for vehicle routing problems are capable of handling more and more problems considering "realistic" constraints. In this thesis, we focus on solving pickup and delivery problems and dial a ride problems, having the specificity of allowing the transfer of users from one vehicle to another. First, we propose an exact method based on column generation to solve a special case of the problem called the Pickup and Delivery Problem with Shuttles. Then, we develop efficient heuristic methods to solve the Pickup and Delivery Problem with Transfers and the Dial-a-Ride Problem with Transfer. These methods are applied to the optimization of handicapped people transportation from their homes to schools or medical centers. We show that the use of transfer points can reduce the cost of these transports

In 1770 Madeleine’s mistress, Anne Despense de la Loge, brought the adolescent Madeleine to Lorient, France, as her servant. Their voyage took them through Isle de France (Mauritius), where the French navy was preparing for war against the British. There, she sold or traded Madeleine to a colonial family from Isle Bourbon, Charles and Marie Anne Routier, despite French Free Soil laws that should have prevented the transfer, gift, or sale. Madeleine’s status as an Indian, rather than an African, made her slave status ambiguous at a time when French policy was increasingly tying African descent to slavery. The Routiers’ colonial wealth was founded in their parents’ service to the French East India Company and the expanding use of slave labor in island plantations.

This chapter looks at the brief period from 1794 to the summer of 1796, in which the ex-Jesuit community began to explore ways to resolve the crisis in which it found itself. Several short trips to Macao failed to yield any further missionaries for the Padroado Catholics, and so an attempt was made to send two men to Europe to make a direct appeal. Binh conducted a significant and successful fundraising effort among the members of the Padroado community. When the men are finally able to embark for Europe, their mission is turned back after reaching Goa, and its members are beset by pirates on their return voyage, reducing them to rags. The chapter then describes a renewal of this effort, this time led by Binh himself, who, along with three of his companions, set sail for Europe in mid-February of 1796. It describes their five-month journey from Macao through the Straits of Malacca, around the Horn of Africa and to the island of St. Helena. There they transfered to a Portuguese vessel on which they are able to continue their voyage directly to Lisbon, where they arrived in late July of that year.

The Columbian Exchange refers to the flow of plants, animals and microbes across the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Coined in 1972 by the historian Alfred Crosby, the Columbian Exchange set in motion Christopher Columbus' historic voyage to the Americas in 1492. Crosby used the term "Columbian Exchange" to describe the process of biological diffusion that arose following Europe's colonization of the Americas. Crosby's The Columbian Exchange: Biological and Cultural Consequences of 1492 chronicled the wide-ranging consequences of the transfer of diseases, plants and animals that ensued after 1492. The book, essentially consisting of a series of interlocking essays, documented the impact of Old World plants and animals on the Americas, the global dissemination of New World foods, and how European colonization resulted in the transmission of pathogens. Crosby made forceful arguments to support his claim that the most significant consequences of European colonization of the new world were biological in nature.

This chapter examines the effect of winds on Jupiter's weather. The Great Red Spot is an atmospheric structure—a storm—that is free to move about under the laws of fluid dynamics. On Earth, these laws lead to turbulence, chaos, and limited predictability. By comparison, the Red Spot is well behaved. It stays in one latitude band, rolling like a ball bearing between two conveyor belts—a westward current to the north and an eastward current to the south. All the large-scale features are remarkably constant. Atmospheric scientists during the Voyager encounter were surprised by the areas outside the Red Spot and the three white ovals—formerly featureless areas that had become turbulent convective regions. Depuis l’Odyssée, la mer est associée aux motifs classiques du voyage. S’inscrivant dans la lignée de l’œuvre homérique, le recueil poétique des Regrets de Joachim du Bellay regorge de métaphores aquatiques et nautiques, qui relatent le voyage du poète à Rome, en suggérant ses risques : errance, égarement, aliénation, etc. C’est dans son sens mystique et métaphysique que nous voudrions comprendre la métaphore marine, notamment à travers le motif de la navigation, qui retrace symboliquement la quête d’un centre spirituel d’immortalité, quête qui s’accompagne d’un ensemble de difficultés et de frustrations. Si les eaux de la mer bercent et charment le voyageur, elles peuvent aussi le dérouter, causer sa perte et entraîner son engouffrement. Mouvantes et imprévisibles, les eaux de la mer disent les attraits du monde matériel dont la femme demeure un archétype fondamental ; elles disent aussi les risques de la tentation qui ne sont pas seulement la mort de l’être mais aussi de l’écriture. À travers les différents paradigmes qu’elle génère, à savoir : angoisse, naufrage, tentation et confrontation, la mer devient le vecteur d’un transfert de sens, relançant le questionnement métaphysique et ontologique du poète : qui est-il ? Quelle signification donner au monde, à l’Histoire ? Quelle place accorder à soi dans l’univers ? Quel rapport entretenir avec l’Autre ? The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) “Jules Verne” is the first completely automated rendezvous and docking spaceship to service to the International Space Station (ISS). As a cargo ship, it is designed for one-time use. After completing its mission, it is subjected to hypersonic flow during the re-entry into earth’s atmosphere, with high associated heat flux leading to structural heating and fragmentation of the vehicle. During its first voyage on September 29, 2008, the ATV reentry was observed using various instruments including a wide field view camera and high frame rate cameras. Using the wide field view camera the trajectory path can be reconstructed. The high frame rate camera gives information about the sequence of the events of the explosions and fragmentations of various parts of the spacecraft. The aim of this paper is to present the detailed events that occurred during the ATV re-entry.

Abstract A modern ship is fitted with numerous sensors and Data Acquisition Systems (DAQs) each of which can be viewed as a data collection source node. These source nodes transfer data to one another and to one or many centralized systems. The centralized systems or data interpreter nodes can be physically located onboard the vessel or onshore at the shipping data control center. The main purpose of a data interpreter node is to assimilate the collected data and present or relay it in a concise manner. The interpreted data can further be visualized and used as an integral part of a monitoring and decision support system. This paper presents a simple data processing framework based on big data analytics. The framework uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as a tool to process data gathered through in-service measurements onboard a ship during various operational conditions. Weather hindcast data is obtained from various sources to account for environmental loads on the ship. The proposed framework reduces the dimensionality of high dimensional data and determines the correlation between data variables. The accuracy of the model is evaluated based on the data recorded during the voyage of a ship.

Abstract: In contrast to Le Corbusier's later written accounts and the opinions critics have formed from these texts, this article concentrates on the ideas and opinions Le Corbusier developed in-situ during his first visit to the Acropolis in 1911. Using a detailed method of graphic analysis, this research deconstructs a set of Le Corbusier’s original sketches of the Acropolis made in Carnet 3 during his Voyage d’Orient in 1911. Comparing them in chronological sequence reveals how the ideas of the architect evolved whilst he was immersed in the physical experience of the Acropolis. The article focuses on two themes prevalent in the sketches and also in his later work: The various relationships between architecture and ground; and the representation of dynamic spatial experience across time and space. It finds that Le Corbusier used in-situ sketching as an intentional and rigorous method to analyse the Acropolis, actively forming his opinions through experimentation and refinement rather than merely illustrating pre-established ideas. This analysis reveals how Le Corbusier made use of his prior knowledge of the Acropolis but also, how he used his sketches to gradually transform this into a personal and original interpretation of the site and its buildings. It also shows that a number of his most celebrated ideas are not present in these sketches and may have developed in retrospect under the influence of other authors. Resumen: Este artículo se centra en las ideas y opiniones de Le Corbusier desarrolladas in-situ durante su primera visita a la Acrópolis en 1911 y contrasta con escritos posteriores del propio Le Corbusier e historiadores de estos textos. Este artículo deconstruye una serie croquis originales dibujados por Le Corbusier en el Carnet 3 de su Viaje al Oriente a través de un análisis gráfico detallado. Comparando sus croquis originales en secuencia cronológica revela como las ideas del arquitecto evolucionaron mientras que estaba inmerso en la experiencia física de la Acrópolis. El artículo se enfoca en dos temas predominantes que son presentes tanto en los croquis como en su obra posterior: Las relaciones entre la arquitectura y el terreno; y la representación de la experiencia espacio-temporal del conjunto arquitectónico. El artículo argumenta que Le Corbusier utilizaba sus croquis in-situ como método intencional y riguroso para analizar la arquitectura formando sus opiniones por experimentación y refinamiento más que para ilustrar conceptos preestablecidos. Este análisis muestra como Le Corbusier aprovechaba sus conocimientos previos de la Acrópolis, además de transformarlos gradualmente por medio de sus croquis en una interpretación personal y original del lugar y de la arquitectura. También explica que varias de sus ideas más celebradas no están presentes en estos croquis y que las desarrolló retrospectivamente bajo la influencia de otros autores.
