La tesi è strutturata in tre capitoli principali: Stato dell’arte: in questo capitolo si presenta il tema dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, del Machine Learning e del Deep Learning approfondendo il mondo delle Reti Neurali Convoluzionali. Oltre ad un’analisi sulla struttura e l’utilizzo di queste tecnologie, viene spiegato il perché sia corretto un loro impiego per la risoluzione del problema di classificazione e riconoscimento dei monumenti. Un’ultima sezione è dedicata ai lavori correlati mettendo in mostra le potenzialità delle CNN ed i risultati ottenuti in articoli affini al tema dei beni culturali. Progettazione: in questo capitolo vengono descritte le tecnologie e le architetture utilizzate. Nella prima sezione viene descritto e analizzato il dominio del problema, nelle sezioni successive vengono trattate le tecnologie impiegate per lo sviluppo e la risoluzione dei problemi legati alla Rete Neurale Convoluzionale. Un capitolo fondamentale in cui vengono gettate le basi per la vera e propria implementazione dei concetti descritti. Implementazione e testing: in questo capitolo avviene l’implementazione del codice con conseguenti considerazioni da effettuare. Riveste un ruolo chiave in quanto vengono mostrati i risultati ottenuti dalle diverse architetture andando ad individuare e selezionare il modello migliore. In seguito alla valutazione del modello si procede con una fase di testing per verificare il corretto funzionamento della rete. Al termine di questi capitoli che rappresentano il corpo della tesi, è presente un paragrafo conclusivo dedicato alle trattazioni finali con relative considerazioni sul prototipo ottenuto. In aggiunta vengono evidenziati quelli che possono essere gli sviluppi futuri del progetto.

This Thesis presents some of the most important results obtained in the PhD that concern with multispectral satellite remote sensing, radiative transfer modelling, aerosol optical properties and some related applications. The research activities have been supported by and performed in collaboration with Flyby S.r.l., a small Italian company devoted to applied research and innovative technology development in remote sensing that fully funded the PhD. The effects of atmospheric aerosols on the solar radiative transfer have been investigated by exploiting both satellite optical imagery and ground-based solar radiation measurements. In particular cloudless-sky conditions have been taken into account in order to focus aerosols impact on radiative transfer avoiding the clouds related effects. The simultaneous observation of solar radiation “below” and “above” the aerosols layer in cloudless-sky conditions showed a correlation between aerosols amount in the atmosphere (revealed also by ground-based measurements) and the spectral radiance observed by two infrared channels of the satellite optical sensor. This has been extremely important for the development of an innovative method for the satellite-based near real-time solar radiation monitoring taking also into account aerosols impact. Besides, also the effects of clouds on solar radiation have been modelled, leading to several applications in the fields of renewable energies and healthcare. In particular a methodology for the near real-time monitoring of the performances of solar energy plants has been developed: satellite-based solar irradiance at ground and an analytic modelling of the solar plant allows a near-real time evaluation of plant’s performances. Moreover, an application dedicated to the satellite-based monitoring of UV effects on human skin has been developed. This application starts from the near-real time calculation of UV erythemal dose and provides a “safe sun exposure time” for avoiding sunburns or other skin diseases (such as melanoma).

Ma recherche interroge les transferts culturels produits entre la France et l’Italie au XVIIe siècle en ce qui concerne la culture chorégraphique, avant que la belle dance française ne s’impose comme norme de référence à l’échelle européenne. Me plaçant dans la lignée d’études promue par J. Sasportes et S. Mamone sur l’appréhension de la culture spectaculaire de l’époque moderne au-delà des limites nationales, je considère qu’une analyse des processus migratoires des artistes au cours du XVIIe siècle aide à redéfinir l’émergence des styles comme le résultat d’un dialogue culturel vigoureux. En ce sens, la notion de transfert culturel – tirée de l’histoire croisée (Werner et Zimmerman) – vient éclaircir les références kinésiques communes entre France et Italie à l’intérieur d’un contexte de circulation (des personnes et des savoir-faire) et d’un processus multiple d’appropriation, de configuration, parfois aussi de résistance à l’intégration d’éléments chorétiques d’autrui. Suivant ces propos, j’ai resserré l’étude sur les riches échanges entre la République de Venise et Paris dans la culture dramaturgique et dans la danse théâtrale et sociale, dans une période comprise entre 1637 (naissance du théâtre public vénitien) et 1728 (publication du Trattato del ballo nobile de Dufort). Suivant la démarche qualitative et inductive de l’anthropologie historique (C. Ginzburg, P. Burke), j’ai envisagé le théâtre public vénitien et son ballo teatrale (I. Alm) comme contre-modèles à la tradition historiographique du ballet français – souvent érigée comme la seule expérience significative de l’époque. Me détachant des catégories taxinomiques de « Renaissance », « Baroque » ou « ballet de cour » (B. Sparti), j’ai retracé les dénominations générées par les discours internes à l’art et transmises par ses acteurs. En plus de sonder les traditions et les relations du « ballet » et du « ballo », la thèse interroge les médiations culturelles entre France et Italie via les emprunts linguistiques de la langue française à la langue italienne (E. Kougioumtzoglou- Roucher), voire via les emprunts cinétiques de la belle dance au vocabulaire technique italien. Cette analyse comparative est accompagnée par un travail de réappropriation corporelle du vocabulaire ancien, l’articulation entre théorie et pratique étant au cœur de la méthodologie des études en danse
My research questions the cultural transfers between France and Italy in the XVIIth century in the respect of choreographic culture, before French belle dance was imposed as the standard reference on a European scale. Placing myself in the line of studies promoted by J. Sasportes and S. Mamone on the understanding the spectacular culture of the modern era beyond national boundaries, I consider that an analysis of the migratory processes of artists during the XVIIth century could help to redefine the emergency of styles as the result of vigorous cultural dialogues. In this sense, the notion of cultural transfer – drawn from the gekreuzte Geschichte (Werner and Zimmerman) – clarifies the kinetic common references between France and Italy within a context of circulation (of people and expertise) and a multiple process of appropriation, configuration, sometimes also resistance to the integration of choretic elements. Following these remarks, I tightened up the study on the rich exchanges between the Republic of Venice and Paris in the culture of dramaturgy and of theatrical and social dance, in a period between 1637 (birth of the Venetian public theatre) and 1728 (publication of Trattato del Ballo Nobile by Dufort). Following the deliberately qualitative and inductive approach of historical anthropology (C. Ginzburg, P. Burke), I looked at the Venetian public theatre and its ballo teatrale (I. Alm) more specifically as a counter-model to the historiographical tradition of French ballet – often erected as the only experience significant at the time. Also, wanting to get rid of the taxonomic categories of "Renaissance", "Baroque" or "ballet de cour" (B. Sparti), I retraced the denominations generated by internal discourses to the art and transmitted by the actors. In addition to probing the traditions and relations of "ballet" and "ballo", the thesis questions the cultural mediations between France and Italy via linguistic borrowing from the French language to the Italian language (E. Kougioumtzoglou-Roucher), even via the borrowing of kinetic units, and driving content of the belle dance to the Italian technical vocabulary. This comparative analysis is accompanied by a work of physical reappropriation of ancient vocabulary, the articulation between theory and practice being at the very heart of the methodology of dance studies

Cette thèse explore et analyse l’œuvre littéraire et artistique de plusieurs artistes et écrivains qui ont eu un lien avec le mouvement surréaliste et se sont exilés au Mexique. Les œuvres de Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Wolfgang Paalen, Alice Rahon, Kati Horna, José Horna, Benjamin Péret, César Moro et Luis Buñuel sont pour plusieurs méconnues ou peu accessibles au grand public. Leurs archives sont dispersées dans le monde et parfois ignorées. Nous avons entrepris de reconstituer une chronologie de cet épisode spécifique de leur vie, d’inventorier leurs œuvres, en particulier celles des années d’exil au Mexique (1938-1963), de montrer le dialogue esthétique qui s’est créé dans le moment exceptionnel de leur rencontre au Mexique, à la fois à partir de leur passé surréaliste et du cœur même de l’expérience exilique qu’ils partagent. Les préoccupations, les activités et les relations qui rapprochent ces artistes conduisent à s’interroger sur la possible définition d’un mouvement. Leurs interactions amicales et artistiques suggèrent, pour un temps au moins, la détermination de points communs esthétiques, littéraires et culturels. Le creuset créatif de leur exil commun est aussi un point de départ pour analyser la réception de ces œuvres et se demander s’il existe une poétique de l’exil spécifique à ces artistes qui ont vécu en proximité sur le sol mexicain. Pour traiter cette question, cette thèse analyse les représentations communes à ces artistes et observe le rôle déterminant qu’ils ont sur l’art et la littérature latino-américains de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle
This thesis intends to explore and analyse the literary and visual work of a number of exiled artists and writers who have a particular link with the surrealist movement, and fled to Mexico. Several elements of the work of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Wolfgang Paalen, Alice Rahon, Kati Horna, José Horna, Benjamin Péret, César Moro and Luis Buñuel are often unknown or rarely accessible to a large public. Their archives are scattered around the world and are often ignored. Our aim is to establish a chronological reconstitution of their lives, to inventory their work –particularly from 1938 to 1963, focusing on the exile phase – as well as to examine the aesthetic dialogue between them. The basis, activities and relationships that connect these artists come not only from their surrealist past but also from the exile they share; nevertheless, their interactions challenge their connection as a group. Their artworks communicate with each other and their exile is our starting point in order to analyse the reception of these works. Is there an inherent poetry of the exile in the work of these artists? We will answer this question by studying their common representations and by observing their strong influence in Latin American art and literature from the second half of the 20th century

La maison d’édition et de librairie Treuttel & Würtz a joué un rôle décisif dans les échanges internationaux au tournant des XVIIIe / XIXe siècles. c étaient non seulement les éditeurs de B. Constant, J. W. Goethe et G. de Staël, mais aussi les fournisseurs des grandes bibliothèques européennes en publications venant de l’étranger (p. ex. les bibliothèques royales à Paris, Berlin et Londres, la bibliothèque du marquis de Paulmy, celle de Weimar et celle de l’université de Göttingen). L’essor de la maison est lié à la nouvelle conception de l’image du libraire à Strasbourg à l’époque des Lumières : il est le médiateur entre l’auteur et le public, et entre les différentes cultures entre lesquelles il anime un marché du livre transnational. D’origine strasbourgeoise et avec des établissements à Strasbourg, Paris et Londres, les dirigeants de Treuttel & Würtz répondent pleinement à ce modèle. La valorisation du livre et de son contenu, et la relation étroite entretenue avec l’élite culturelle et politique de l’époque, leur ont permis de bénéficier de privilèges extraordinaires, dont une licence de commerce avec l’Angleterre sous l’Empire, et un intéressement dans la création de nouvelles bibliothèques publiques. Par leur intégration aux élites de l’université et de la culture, ils ont pu encourager les discours littéraires transculturels, et la naissance des philologies modernes. Cette thèse est conçue dans une perspective interdisciplinaire : elle articule l’histoire du livre, l’histoire transnationale et l’histoire des transferts avec l’histoire littéraire, et elle ouvre la monographie d’une maison d’édition vers un tableau socioculturel de l’Europe autour de 1800
The international bookselling company Treuttel & Würtz played a crucial role in intercultural exchange. It has not only published numerous authors of the French Académie française, and other important writers such as J. W. Goethe or G. de Staël, but also supplied foreign books to prestigious libraries (for example the Royal Libraries in France, Prussia and Great Britain or the Bodleian Library in Oxford). Establishing close ties with the political and cultural elites of the time, the company benefited from unique privileges such as a trade license with the United Kingdom during Napoléon’s continental system. Originally from Strasbourg and perfectly bilingual, the founders continuously expanded the company: in addition to the already existing branch in Strasbourg, they opened a second one in Paris in 1796, and a third in London in 1817. The partners considered the international exchange as their personal vocation and used the medium of the book to materialize their commitment. In this sense, they also devoted their publishing house to the service of the exchange of social and political ideas, literature, and philosophy. Treuttel and Würtz’s commitment to the transnational literary discourse ultimately also influenced the formation of new academic fields around 1800 such as the modern philologies. This thesis builds on an interdisciplinary perspective by combining the French tradition of Book History, with transnational approaches, Cultural Transfer and Romance Studies

Contrairement aux autres sports collectifs introduits en France dans la seconde moitié du XIXème siècle, le handball prend son essor en France durant l’entre-deux-guerres. Passant d’une pratique d’entraînement hivernal des athlètes, à une pratique professionnelle au début du XXIe siècle, notre objet de recherche cherche à expliquer les processus d’intégration et de diffusion de cette pratique en France, tant sur le plan géopolitique que technico-tactique. À partir d’une diversité de sources, (archives institutionnelles, témoignages de 25 acteurs, coupures de presse et périodiques handballistiques), trois perspectives sont envisagées (institutionnelle, sociale et culturelle), identifiant quatre étapes dans la construction du handball français. Après une première phase d’importation, grâce à deux vecteurs de diffusion principaux, le sport ouvrier et le sport scolaire, se situant à des échelles et des vitesses différentes, la FFHB est créée par le régime de Vichy, associé à quelques professeurs d’EP conquis par cette nouvelle activité de football à la main qui se pratique alors à 7 ou 11 joueurs. Puis, lorsque le handball à 7 devient majoritaire, sa représentation culturelle se transforme, passant d’une somme de techniques individuelles à maîtriser à la nécessité de prendre en considération les adversaires et les partenaires. Cette révolution est largement soutenue par la DTN dans les années 1960 et 1970, en lien avec les considérations scientifiques présentes en France et à l’étranger, pendant que Nelson Paillou conçoit la massification des licenciés et la structuration du système fédéral selon une logique amateur. La chute du bloc de l’Est et le choix des dirigeants et entraîneurs fédéraux, de privilégier le haut niveau contribuent aux premiers succès français tout en ouvrant l’ère de la marchandisation et de la spectacularisation à partir des années 1990. Néanmoins, à l’aube du XXIe siècle, le handball finit par s’abstraire des modèles étrangers et rejoint le développement des autres sports collectifs en professionnalisant ses structures et ses acteurs
Unlike the other team sports brought to France in the second half of the 19th century, handball thrived in France between the First and the Second World Wars. It has moved since then from a winter training practice to become a professional activity at the beginning of the 21st century. The objective of our research is to explain the integration and propagation processes of this sport, with geopolitical as well as technical and tactical considerations. A variety of sources have been investigated – institutional archives, testimonies of 25 stakeholders, press articles, periodicals about handball – with regards to three axis – institutional, social and cultural – ; four stages have been identified in the development of handball in France. The first phase is the importation of handball through two dissemination vectors that have different scales and paces: the sport of the working class and school sport. The Vichy government creates the FFHB, which is associated to a few Physical Education teachers that are captivated by this new activity – football played with hands in teams of 7 or 11 players. Then, when the handball is mainly played in teams of 7, its cultural representation changes: it goes from a superposition of individual technics to the need of taking into consideration teammates and opponents. This revolution is supported by the national technical direction in the 1960’s and 1970’s and is linked to the scientific thoughts in France and abroad ; meanwhile, Nelson Paillou makes handball available to the masses and structures the federal system with the objective to promote non professional handball. With the collapse of the communist bloc, federal managers and trainers choose to favour high-level sport and contribute to the first French successes. From the 1990’s, they also start developing the commercial aspect and the spectacle aspect of the sport. However, at the dawn of the 21st century, handball finally moves away from international models and follows the development of the other team sports with a more professional structure and stakeholders

Bien que la globalisation culturelle laisse supposer qu'il soit possible de produire et de recevoir de façon égalitaire des informations partout dans le monde, les cartes du savoir sont en réalité caractérisées par un déséquilibre énorme. Le projet analyse ce phénomène en s’appuyant sur l‘exemple du transfert trilatéral de la littérature académique africaine en France et en Allemagne depuis les années cinquantes. D’une part, le but principal de ce projet est de relever la quasi totalité des livres et recueils universitaires en sciences sociales et humaines rédigés par des intellectuels africains et publiés dans des maisons d’édition allemandes et françaises. D’autre part, l’analyse des résultats quantitatives est basée sur une approche macro-perspective en s’appuyant sur les études qualitatives sur le sujet préexistantes. L’analyse quantitative et la classification des résultats ainsi que leur interprétation permettent actuellement d’obtenir des connaissances étonnantes, non seulement sur des continuités et discontinuités dans la publication de la littérature universitaire en provenance d’Afrique sur une période d‘environ soixante ans, mais également sur les profils géographiques, thématiques et temporels des maisons d’édition ainsi que sur leurs préférences personnelles, éditoriales et linguistiques. Grâce à la collection de données, le filtrage, le traitement ultérieur et la visualisation, nous pouvons alors comprendre quelle « Afrique scientifique » a finalement été transmise et importée, pour la période définie (1950-2012), à ces deux marchés du livre. Cette approche permet d’envisager de nouvelles hypothèses et interprétations pour l’analyse de la circulation du savoir africain, à l’instar des publications en sciences sociales et humaines. Une approche établie pour la recherche sur le franchissement culturel des frontières constitue le concept de transfert culturel. Pour ce travail, le concept fournit des approches théoriques et pratiques essentielles. En combinant différentes méthodes pour lesquelles les « digital humanities » ont été de plus en plus souvent sollicitées, l’approche méthodologique va vers une reconstruction complète du transfert, en utilisant aussi bien les analyses quantitatives que qualitatives
Even though international interconnectedness and globalization evoke the idea of being able to produce and receive knowledge equally all over the world, the maps of knowledge are unevenly distributed on a global scale. My dissertation project analyses this phenomenon by examining the trilateral, multidimensional transfer of African academic literature to Germany and France since the 1950s.The research interest of this project is to determine and organize the entire spectrum of publications from the social sciences and the humanities written by African authors and published in German and French publishing houses. The quantitative analysis on a macro level is based on already existing qualitative studies in the field. The quantitative analysis and the classification of the results give valuable knowledge about continuities and discontinuities in the publication of African academic literature over the span of six decades (1950-2012). The research further examines and elaborates upon geographical, thematic, and temporal profiles of the publishing houses as well as their personal, editorial, and linguistic preferences. By means of collecting, filtering, processing, and visualizing the data, it is possible to find out what kind of “academic Africa” has finally reached the two national book markets. This approach helps to identify new hypotheses and interpretations concerning the circulation of African knowledge in general through the specific example of academic literature from the social sciences and the humanities. Providing important theoretical and practical approaches for this project, the concept of cultural transfers is an established approach for analysing cultural border crossings between countries and regions. The methodological approach combines different methods and, for the data processing, includes examples from the digital humanities to realize an all-embracing reconstruction of the entire transfer process in both a quantitative and qualitative sense

Au moment décisif de l'histoire culturelle franco-américaine où s'inverse la hiérarchie des capitales artistiques entre Paris et New York, le Nouveau Roman français connaissait une certaine fortune aux États-Unis, en particulier dans la communauté artistique regroupée autour de l'Art Minimal. À la faveur d'un double transfert - du champ littéraire vers le champ artistique et de la France vers les États-Unis -, le Nouveau Roman retenait l'attention d'une partie de l'art américain, qui tentait de se construire contre l'art européen du XIXe siècle mais avec la littérature française de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Fondé sur une somme d'indices fournis par ces artistes et complétée par des enquêtes historiques et sociologiques, une collecte d'articles, une recherche théorique et des études d’œuvres significatives, ce travail tente d'expliquer les raisons de cette fortune et d'analyser les aboutissements théoriques et esthétiques de la réception du Nouveau Roman par le milieu artistique américain
In an key Franco-American cultural and historical moment when New York takes Paris's place as the world artistic capital, the French New Novel achieved certain successs in the United States, especially in the Minimal Art community. Owing to a double transfer – from the literary field to the artistic field and from France to America -, some American artists drew attention to the French New Novel. While they were developing their art against 19th century european art, they created it with 20th century French literature. This work is based on an amount of clues given by these artists, supplented by historical and sociological investigations, a collection of articles, a theorethical research, and studies of significant works of art, in an attempt to understand the reasons of this success and the theorethical and aesthetic realizations of the reception of the New Novel by the American artistic milieu

The aim of this study is to analyse the translation strategies used in order to translate a socio-political text from French to Swedish with focus on proper names and metaphors. Proper names and metaphors are deeply culture rooted and containers of specific elements familiar only to an initiated audience. The main purpose is to investigate the possibility of transferring these underlying elements from one culture to another, keeping in mind the genre, the aim (or skopos), the Interpretive Theory of Translation and the pragmatic aspect. Vinay and Darbelnet and Rune Ingo offered the methods for the translation of proper names. The most common strategy used was transfer or literal translation, in certain cases followed by a complementary information, and equivalence. The conceptual theory worked as a starting point for the classification of metaphors and the strategies proposed by Peter Newmark structured the translation. With the concepts of war and family the pragmatic aspect needed to be considered more frequently than with the concept of game and the procedures of conversion of metaphor to sense and translation of metaphor by simile were used to a lager extent than that of reproducing the same image. Analysing each case one by one and applying the most suitable strategy according to context and circumstances, with respect to culture differences and sense, helped us to form a coherent unity providing a suitable ground for a cultural transfer to grow, or at least to show.

The study was designed to examine the factors which affect the transferability of Western (contemporary British) philosophies and practices to the Arab culture of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The general case of transferability was studied, but it was biased towards its application to management. The thesis opened with a short history of the area under consideration and highlighted the role of the West in the emergence of these modern Arab states. Arab way of life was discussed at some length to illustrate the existence of cultural discontinuities. Data for the research was obtained by distributing a questionnaire to Arab students from the countries concerned who were studying in British Universities and Polytechnics in the Spring of 1984. The students were adjudged to be fresh from their own culture and to be meeting the British educational system and way of life head on. The data was subjected to an extensive, but simple form of statistical analysis which searched for associations and factors relevant to transferability. Factor Analysis was used for the educational and cultural sections. Four main conclusions were drawn. (1) A simple framework, which emerged from the views of students on taught courses, can be used to classify the transferability of subjects, however it relies on judgement to quantify cultural discontinuities. (2) Seventy five percent of respondents experienced some degree of culture shock in Britain. (3) Students generally regarded Western education favourably, but felt that contact with the West would alter Arab society and hence they should take care about what aspects of Western life and culture to accept. (4) National factors as well as cultural factors affect transferability. Finally, future research could fruitfully be concentrated on examining the effectiveness or otherwise of ongoing cross national training programmes.

Lieu commun au sein de l’historiographie de ce courant artistique et littéraire. En déplaçant le curseur chronologique pour étudier la période comprise entre 1789 et 1830, c’est-à-dire entre la fin de l’anglomanie d’Ancien Régime et la date consacrée du triomphe romantique en France, cette thèse s’intéresse aux conditions d’apparition de centaines d’œuvres empruntant leur sujet à un corpus d’une quarantaine d’auteurs britanniques, de Macpherson et Smith – qui dévoilent Ossian à l’Europe –, à Byron,Walter Scott et Shakespeare. Nombre de ces œuvres ont pu être localisées, ou sont connues par divers témoignages, et leur étude permet de constater l’hétérogénéité des profils, des formations, des styles et des motivations des artistes français ou présents sur le sol français qui s’intéressent à ces textes. En appliquant un schéma d’analyse conçu grâce à des outils forgés par les études de réception, les théories de la traduction ou la littérature comparée, il est possible de déterminer que la réception de textes littéraires dans les arts visuels procède en quatre temps distincts : diffusion, transposition, appropriation et répercussions. En étudiant chacune de ces phases et en replaçant la production des artistes en regard des enjeux socioculturels et économiques de leur temps, il en résulte moins une image d’Épinal d’un certain romantisme « frénétique » qu’un instantané de la profonde complexité de la scène artistique du temps, qui voit naître à la fois un imaginaire romantique et un romantisme imaginaire
Commonplace within the historiography of this artistic and literary movement. By moving the chronological cursor towards the 1789-1830 period, that is between the end of Ancien Régime anglomania and the accepted date of the romantic triumph in France, this dissertation deals with the conditions of appearance of hundreds of artworks borrowing their subjects from within a corpus of more than forty British authors, from Macpherson and Smith - who unveiled Ossian’s poems to Europe - toLord Byron, Sir Walter Scott and William Shakespeare. Many of these works of art could have been localised, or are known through various testimonies, and their study allows us to observe the heterogeneousness of the relevant artists’ profiles, trainings and motivations. By applying an analytical pattern designed to use tools forged by reception studies, translation theory and comparative literature, it is possible to determine that the reception of literary texts in the visual arts proceeds through four phases :diffusion, adaptation, appropriation and repercussion. Placing this artistic production within the sociocultural and economical context of its time reveals a less idealized image of some «gothic» romanticism, the deep complexity of the contemporary French artistic scene which sees the birth of bothromantic imagination and imaginary romanticism

Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate the role of culture in the process of knowledge transfer through expatriates, while also aiming to identify factors that are influential in this process other than culture. Method: The aim has been reached by adopting a qualitative case study, with a focus on a single case. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with expatriates to gain data. Findings: The study proves the importance of culture in a cross-border expatriates knowledge transfer. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions have been found to be determinants in this process. Language has also been outlined as an important component in this regards.  In addition, type of knowledge, recipient’s ability to absorb, and the source’s capabilities to transform are also influential factors stated by expatriates. Limitations: The study is limited to a single company. Further, the data have been collected only from expatriates, not the local employees’ point of view. Suggestions for future research: Further research can be done in the same field, but with focus on different sectors, and different countries. The academic world can also benefit from studies that focus on countries that are different from each other, in order to understand how the knowledge transfer is effected by those differences.

The study refers to the issue of cross-cultural transfer of internationally initiated health promotion and tobacco control policies. It explores the process of cross-cultural policy transfer, analyses the difficulties, proposes methods to overcome them, and tests the approach in Bulgaria. Generally focused on international health promotion policies as a broad area of study, the work particularly concentrates on tobacco control policies as a more concrete and specific subject of investigation. Completion of a short piece of cross-national comparative policy transfer research, based on two case studies - the UK as a donor of policy and Bulgaria as a recipient location - is used to assist designing an empirical investigation that develops and tests an approach for strengthening the process of cross-cultural transfer. The Hofstede Model of National Cultures is used as a guiding tool to describe and classify the different cultures of the two countries, and to assess the cultural constraints and possibilities for transfer. The results confirm the hypothesis that through contextual interpretation of international health promotion policy language, and its specification to the cultural patterns of Bulgaria, we can increase the acceptability and assure greater effectiveness in communicating those health promotion messages. The findings indicate the need for culturally specific language interpretation and adaptation of global policies if they are to become understandable and applicable to specific cultural contexts. They help to address the question: "How can the main concepts and issues inherent in western developed health promotion policies be translated into the language of countries having different cultural patterns?" The main theme of this research has not been explored so far in Bulgaria and it is also a rather new topic for international policy research. The findings might assist the process of improving cross-cultural policy formulation and help to overcome the difficulties in cross-cultural policy transfer. The study takes into account the dynamic developments within Bulgaria as it prepares for European integration as a pre-Accession country; and its findings could assist in negotiations within public health policy. The work could also have some major applications on a wider policy basis. It might also be of particular importance for countries not in the western group within Europe and which are socio-culturally different. Some implications can also be considered for the process of accession to the EU. The Union is now expanding and is challenged by great cultural diversity, both across Europe and within the individual states. Accession countries like Bulgaria have to adapt now to international and European policies and principles, which cannot be directly translated into the language of many countries. The methodology developed here should assist the adaptation of international policy items into a language that is culturally specific for the country and the sub-national levels, and thus improve the implementation of European policies in particular localities.

Le développement de la viticulture en Australie au XIXe siècle découlait du transfert de modèles européens pour diffuser la production et la consommation de vin dans les sociétés coloniales. Parmi ces modèles, la France se révéla progressivement comme un choix à part, du fait de la réputation de ses vins et de l’influence de ses pratiques culturelles dans le monde britannique. Cette thèse cherche à analyser les transferts de cépages, compétences, technologies et experts de différentes régions françaises vers les colonies australiennes de Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, Victoria et Australie-Méridionale. Ces trois colonies regroupaient alors les principales régions viticoles des antipodes et les traces les plus évidentes d’une présence française. Cette circulation de savoir reposait essentiellement sur les initiatives de colons britanniques aisés dont le but était de développer économiquement et culturellement les colonies. Ce processus illustre l’importance des phénomènes interculturels et transnationaux qui participèrent au façonnement d’une industrie vinicole mondiale au XIXe siècle. Il permet également de révéler la manière dont l’Australie s’appropria ces transferts viti-vinicoles français pour les adapter à son environnement naturel, économique, politique et socio-culturel. Cette thèse, située à l’intersection de l’histoire du vin et de l’histoire transnationale, tente d’apporter une nouvelle perspective sur les effets de la première mondialisation qui facilita la circulation de connaissances, technologies et modèles de production de l’Europe vers les Nouveaux Mondes. Il s’agit de souligner l’importance des échanges interpersonnels et interinstitutionnels à travers les frontières impériales et nationales pour développer agriculture, commerce et savoir scientifique. Ce sujet se propose aussi de questionner la réflexivité des transferts franco-australiens à la façon d’une histoire croisée. C’est dans ce but que ce projet de recherche a été réalisé en France et en Australie, dans une perspective transnationale de croisement des regards entre les mondes francophone et anglophone
The development of viticulture in Australia in the nineteenth century mostly drew on European models to spread both wine production and consumption in the colonial societies during the nineteenth century. Among these models, France gradually appeared as a specific choice due to the reputation of its wines and its cultural practices in the British world. This thesis intends to analyse the transfers of skills, technologies, vine grapes and experts from various French regions to the Australian colonies of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. These three colonies collectively represented the most productive wine district during the nineteenth century and the most evident marks of a French influence. This circulation of knowledge mostly relied on wealthy British colonists’ initiatives in order to develop economically and culturally the colonies. This thesis presents new evidence of the importance of the cross-cultural and transnational aspects which shaped the world wine industry in the nineteenth century. It also shows how Australia instigated these transfers of French practices and ideas and reshaped them to fit its natural, economic, political and socio-cultural environment. Overall, this thesis, situated at the intersection of wine history and transnational history, gives a new insight on the effects of the first wave of globalization which facilitated the circulation of knowledge, technologies and production models from Europe to the New World. It highlights the importance of interpersonal and interinstitutional exchanges occurring across national boundaries in the development of agricultural production, commodity trade and scientific knowledge. It also questions Franco-Australian transfers as a reflexivity process peculiar to histoire croisée. As such, this research project has been conducted both in Australia and in France as a transnational investigation mixing perspectives from the English-speaking world and the French-speaking world

The loss in translation between languages has long been debated, and a current issue within Translation Studies is that of the cultural aspect. Using two opposing concepts by Lawrence Venuti; domestication that is used to assimilate the source culture into the target culture, and foreignization that is used to preserve and highlight the foreign culture in the target text, this paper examines how culture is transferred in literary translation between English and Swedish. In order to establish which strategies are used, data consisting of 30 passages from the American novel Dead Until Dark (2001), and the corresponding passages in two different Swedish translations of it, is analysed linguistically. While the first translation is found to show no marked preference for either strategy, the second translation uses domestication thrice as often as foreignization. However, both translations use domestication in 9 out of 10 examples in the category ‘Figurative use of language’, which suggests a marked difficulty in preserving the source culture while translating metaphorical language. The analysis also shows a difference in the way the strategies are employed, suggesting a further division of the strategies into ‘passive’ and ‘active’. The author calls for further research on the effect of such a division.

L’héritage de Strasbourg s’est construit dans le contexte particulier d’une ville frontalière, dans laquelle différentes influences, principalement française et germanique, ont contribué à forger un caractère singulier. Pourtant, les valeurs conférées à cet ensemble ne sont pas déterminées uniquement par le champ restrictif des considérations nationales. Depuis le Second Empire jusqu’à aujourd’hui, elles ont sans cesse évolué, en particulier depuis les décennies suivant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Notre étude vise à faire état de la construction et de l’évolution des valeurs de l’héritage et du patrimoine de Strasbourg, et en particulier du quartier de la Neustadt, conçu et mis en œuvre pendant la période de l’annexion allemande (1871-1918) lorsque la ville devient la capitale du Reichsland d’Alsace-Lorraine. La période de l’étude s’ouvre à partir des années 1840, au moment du premier inventaire des monuments historiques et d’un grand effort de modernisation et d’embellissement par la Municipalité, et va jusqu’à aujourd’hui, à l’heure où la Neustadt suscite un intérêt croissant tant de la part des institutions locales et régionales, du milieu scientifique, que de la population.Dans ce but, ont été mobilisées les sources permettant d’éclairer ces phénomènes : procès-verbaux du conseil municipal, archives de la commission municipale des Beaux-arts, archives du service régional des Monuments historiques, manuels et revues spécialisés en urbanisme et architecture, les histoires de Strasbourg, les guides et récits de voyage ainsi que la presse quotidienne.Dans cette thèse, l’héritage est considéré comme « l’ensemble des aménagements anthropiques légués, subsistant en tout ou partie », et le patrimoine correspond à « la partie qu’on considère digne de conservation, de restauration et de mise en valeur » (Gauthiez, 2006, p. 126).Les recherches mettent en évidence que les valeurs de l’héritage et du patrimoine bâtis de Strasbourg se fondent pour une part sur les discours portés sur ces objets, mais aussi sur des silences. Ces discours et silences sont nourris de fortes considérations idéologiques liées aux doctrines et pratiques du patrimoine en France et en Allemagne, et d’ordre nationaliste. D’abord héritage méconnu, « étranger », puis patrimoine « hyper-valorisé » illustrant des influences croisées entre France et Allemagne, le patrimoine de la Neustadt se fonde également sur des conflits et le dépassement d’idéologies tout au long du XXe siècle, jusqu’à conduire à une candidature à l’inscription sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco.Une autre part des valeurs de l’héritage et du patrimoine s’inscrit dans un substrat régional et local fort et la continuité des acteurs. Un décalage apparaît nettement dans certains cas entre les pratiques patrimoniales et les discours liés à ces pratiques. Les projets peuvent ainsi se poursuivre au-delà des changements d’appartenance nationale sans nécessairement que la continuité soit revendiquée. Le fort substrat régional et local a également participé de la construction d’une dimension mythologique de l’héritage et du patrimoine qui a favorisé cette cohérence (Barthes, 1957).Force est de constater également que les valeurs de l’héritage et du patrimoine dépendent en grande partie de leur état de connaissance dans les sphères institutionnelle et administrative, scientifique et de la population. Le fait que l’héritage des trois premiers quarts du XIXe siècle de Strasbourg fasse aujourd’hui l’objet d’une sous-valorisation est le résultat du manque d’intérêt porté également au sein de la sphère scientifique.L’approche choisie permet de dépasser les pratiques actuelles dans l’étude de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme en prenant mieux en compte les discours sur l’héritage bâti et en incluant des aspects anthropologiques, symboliques, politiques, sociologiques et culturels, pour exposer la construction du regard patrimonial
The heritage of Strasbourg was built within the context of a boundary city, in which different influences, mainly French and German, have contributed to forge a singular character. Nonetheless, the values attributed to the site are not only determined by the restrictive field of national considerations. From the Second Empire to nowadays, they have continually evolved, and especially since the decades following the Second World War. Our study aims at explaining the construction and evolution of heritage values of Strasbourg, mainly those of the Neustadt, conceived and built during the German annexation (1871-1918), when Strasbourg became the capital of the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen. The period of study opens during the 1840s, when the first inventory of historical monuments was created and a program of modernisation and embellissement was carried out by the City authorities. It stretches until nowadays, when the Neustadt is arousing increasing interest from the local and regional institutions, in the scientific field and among the population. Diverse sources have been exploited during researches: Municipal Council’s minutes, archives of the Municipal Council of Fine-Arts, archives of the Regional Office for Historical Monuments, handbooks and periodicals in architecture and urban planning, histories of Strasbourg, guides and trips narrations, and the press. In the thesis, « Héritage » is conceived as the « ensemble of anthropic construction inherited, partly or completely subsisting », and « Patrimoine » as « the part of heritage identified worthy of conservation, restoration, and valorisation ». (Gauthiez, 2006, p. 126).Firstly, the researches have revealed that the values of heritage of Strasbourg are founded, for one part, on the discourses hold on these objects, as well as on the silences. These discourses and silences are nourished by strong ideological considerations linked to doctrines and practices in the heritage field in France and in Germany. Originally unknown, then considered as « foreign » and finally as heritage « hyper-valorised » illustrating the crossed-influences between France and Germany, the heritage of the Neustadt is founded on conflicts and ideological overtaking all along the XXth century. Nowadays, Unesco World Heritage inscription is envisaged for the Neustadt.Secondly, it appeared that another part of the values of heritage is inscribed within the strong regional substrate and the continuity of actors. A discrepancy appeared when comparing the discourses and practices. Projects are in some case continued beyond the national changes. The important regional substrate has also allowed the construction of a mythological dimension to heritage (Barthes, 1957), and has strengthened the coherence in the urban landscape.Thirdly, the values of heritage rely for a large part on the knowledge within the institutional and administrative spheres, the scientific field, and among the population. The fact that the heritage of the first quarters of the XIXth century of Strasbourg is today under-valorised is the result of a lack of interest within the academic field. The approach selected allows overtaking the current practices in the study of architecture and urban planning by better taking into account the discourses on heritage and by including anthropological, symbolical, political, sociological and cultural aspects, so as to expose the construction of heritage gaze (regard patrimonial)

La pénétration des Scandinaves en Russie, qui s’insère dans un vaste mouvement d’échanges qui entre les VIIIe et XIIe siècles fait circuler hommes et biens, apparaît à bien des égards comme un stimulant économique et politique d’envergure dans l’émergence d’organisations politiques et sociales qui aboutirent au développement de centres proto-urbains et du premier État russe. L’objectif de cette étude est donc de s’attacher à travers le traitement des sources historiographiques scandinaves et leur croisement avec les corpus slavon, byzantin et arabo-persan, à l’appréhension des modalités de transport de ces Scandinaves qui empruntèrent la voie de l’Est. Ce traitement nous permettra alors en plus de mesurer la variété et la richesse des contacts et des types de voyages entrepris, de redessiner des itinéraires, et d’appréhender plus en détail de quelle manière l’historiographie envisageait la géographie russe ainsi que le voyage en ces régions
The penetration of the Scandinavians in Russia, which takes place in this vast movement of exchanges between the eighth and twelfth centuries where men and goods where circulating around Europe, appears in many respects as a political and economic stimulus in the emergence of political and social organizations that led to the development of proto-urban centers and to the creation of the first Russian state. So the aim of this study is through the analyze of the Scandinavian historiography and its crossing with the Slavonic, Byzantine and Arabo-persian corpuses, to focus on the transport modalities of these Scandinavians who took the road to the East. This treatment will allow us to underline the wide variety of contacts and journeys undertaken, and in addition to reconstruct itineraries, and to understand in a better way how historiography dealt with Russian geography and with the journey across those regions as a pattern

À l’heure où les débats politiques se cristallisent autour du multiculturalisme, de la peur de la mondialisation et des récentes arrivées de migrants, ceci dans une Europe qui développe un repli sur soi, il semble important de redonner une profondeur historique aux échanges de toutes sortes entre les différentes rives de la Méditerranée. La cuisine en tant qu’objet d’analyse montre comment différents pays ont pu s’influencer mutuellement culturellement au point qu’il est difficile aujourd’hui de déterminer exactement l’origine d’une recette. Cependant, il existe toujours des résistances à certains traits culturels de l’Autre et ceci se voit à travers les habitudes alimentaires. Ce travail de recherche étudie les relations gastronomiques entre la France et le Maroc en utilisant le paradigme du transfert culturel. Il montre comment un aliment ou une recette passe ou non les frontières (culturelles et géographiques) et pourquoi. Pour cela, trois contextes ont été définis. La colonisation provoque une des grandes « rencontres » ayant marqué les deux sociétés jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’alimentation est en effet au cœur des rapports de pouvoir en contexte colonial. Le deuxième facteur de la « rencontre » entre ces deux sociétés est le phénomène migratoire. Après avoir déterminé ses propres stratégies pour se nourrir lui-même en tant qu’individu, le migrant a un rôle dans les transferts culturels gastronomiques entre son pays et la France, notamment lorsque l’on sait que le secteur de l’alimentation est choisi par beaucoup de migrants marocains pour s’installer en France. Le migrant a un rôle d’innovateur en matière gastronomique pendant que l’on voit aussi évoluer les pratiques des sociétés française et européenne au regard de cette migration. En somme, à travers les pratiques alimentaires, les notions d’intégration, d’assimilation et d’acculturation sont réinterrogées. La recherche se termine enfin par une vision d’ensemble qui est celle de la mondialisation et de la volonté politique du Maroc d’utiliser ses ressources d’ordre gastronomique pour se placer sur la scène internationale
At a time when political debates are crystallizing around multiculturalism, fear of globalization and furthermore the recent arrival of migrants in a Europe which is developing a withdrawal into itself, it seems important to restore some historical depth to the exchanges between the various shores of the Mediterranean area. Food as an object of analysis shows how different countries have so much culturally influenced one another that it is difficult today to determine exactly from where does a recipe comes. However, there is still resistance to certain cultural traits of “the Other” and this is reflected in one’s eating habits. This research studies the gastronomic relations between France and Morocco using the cultural transfer paradigm that shows how recipes could or couldn’t cross borders (in the cultural and geographical meaning) and why. Three context typologies have been defined. Colonization causes one of the great "meetings" that have marked the two societies until today given that in a colonial context food is in the center of power relations. The second factor of the "encounter" between those two societies is the the context of international migration. Migrants and immigrants have a role in cultural gastronomic transfers between their origin country and France, especially because it is chosen by many Moroccan migrants to settle in France by opening restaurants. The migrant has a role of innovator in gastronomic matters while we also see evolving the French and European companies practices towards this migration. Briefly, through eating practices, notions of integration, assimilation and acculturation are re-examined. Finally, the research concludes with an overall vision of globalization and Morocco's political will to use its gastronomic resources to position itself on the international stage

À cette fin, nous entreprenons, dans une démarche comparative, d’analyser et d’observer comment certaines œuvres du répertoire romantique français ont été reçues en Égypte et, par extension, dans le monde arabe tout entier. Notre conviction que le Romantisme français est porteur d’une « orientalité » intrinsèque tant au texte original qu’à sa transposition, nous amène à penser qu’il y aurait là, chez les traducteurs arabes, une propension affinitaire à cette esthétique romantique. This thesis analyses the Arabic translations of French romantic literary works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, during the Nahda or Arab Renaissance. To this end the thesis uses a comparative approach which studies and observes how some works of the French Romantic repertoire have been received in Egypt and, by extension, in the entire world. Our conviction that French Romanticism carries an "orientality" intrinsic both to the original text and its transposition, leads us to think that there would be there, among Arab translators, a tendential affinity to this romantic aesthetic. Our study starts from a corpus comprising the Hugo drama, Hernani, the epistolary novel, Under the lime trees by Alphonse Karr, Lamartine’s “The Lake” and some poems extracted from the Orientals Hugo: "Ghosts", "Lazzara", “Waiting” and “Fire from Heaven”. We will try to conceive a new prism for the comparative view, placing ourselves not only from the point of view of the Arab translators, but also in the modality of their own reading of the work that has imposed itself on their intelligence and their sensitivity

La première partie précise les enjeux et les méthodes de l’étude : le scandale littéraire et philosophique doit être envisagé comme un révélateur des principes et des mécanismes de fonctionnement qui sous-tendent les productions de la République des Lettres. L’étude du scandale dans ce qu’il fait au texte est un prisme pertinent pour analyser le problème du matérialisme français, l’oeuvre de La Mettrie et le fonctionnement de l’espace qui la reçoit. La deuxième partie examine la réception initiale de la Mettrie en Allemagne entre 1739 et 1752. Elle mesure l’impact du scandale sur les textes, en montrant que l’oeuvre de La Mettrie est prise dans des débats qui rejaillissent de manière ambivalente sur son interprétation, allant jusqu’à entrainer de fausses lectures. La troisième partie s’intéresse à la réception ultérieure du médecin-philosophe français. Elle souligne la diversité des discours produits entre 1752 et 1789 : repoussoir, aiguillon, occasion de transfert oblique, voie de contestation et de redéfinition des Lumières, la référence à La Mettrie ne saurait être uniquement interprétée en termes d’influences ou d’absence d’influences. Ce parcours permet, in fine, de relire les débats entre philosophes et antiphilosophes français à l’aune de la réception allemande. In analyzing the discourses developed by the German Enlightenment on La Mettrie between 1739 and 1789, this thesis aims at re-evaluating the place of materialism in the Franco-German cultural exchanges of the period. The first part specifies the stakes and methods of the study: the literary and philosophical scandal must be considered as a revealing of the principles and operating mechanisms that underlie the productions of the Republic of Letters. The study of the scandal in what he does to the text is a pertinent prism to analyze the problem of French materialism, the work of La Mettrie and the functioning of the space that receives it. The second part examines the initial reception of the Mettrie in Germany between 1739 and 1752. It measures the impact of the scandal on the texts, showing that the work of La Mettrie is taken in debates that reflect in an ambivalent way on its interpretation, even leading to false readings. The third part is concerned with the later reception of the French physician-philosopher. It emphasizes the diversity of discourse produced between 1752 and 1789: a flicker, a sting, an oblique transfer opportunity, a way of contesting and redefining the Enlightenment, the reference to La Mettrie can not be solely interpreted in terms of influences or absence of influences. This course allows, in fine, to read differently the debates between French philosophers and antiphilosophers in the light of the German reception. This thesis underlines the richness of the discussion between France and Germany on materialism, reconsiders the role of La Mettrie and invites us to rediscover an unknown work

En este artículo se discute históricamente la trayectoria de la evaluación educacional en el escenario académico brasileño, abordando la influencia de la literatura norteamericana sobre la producción científica nacional, el rompimiento con esa influencia, como los esfuerzos realizados para construir una teoría y una práctica de evaluación aplicada a la realidad brasileña. The subject of this thesis is the knowledge transfer process through the lens of cultural diversity and cultural awareness, bi-directional transfers between and inside Russian and European organisations, leading to the sustainable creation of values. It is aimed at explaining a variance of functions, which affect the knowledge transfer system and reacting to the research question: “How can management consultants overcome the gaps, barriers and stumbling blocks in the daily operations of the transfer of managerial knowledge and skills in intercultural contexts, in order to provide ensured, sustainable value creation for clients and on behalf of the transmitter organisation”? The study of the literature from Western and Russian perspectives was conducted for revealing the positions of scholars in the related areas, such as the national culture and its dimensions, social environment, organisational culture, roles and styles of the actors in the knowledge transfer process, organisational learning and absorptive capacity. Knowledge management and knowledge transfer processes are designed to manage the generation of knowledge from external and internal resources. For the research an Action Research Methodology and a Mixed Method Research approach was employed. An online survey was conducted to collect and exchange primary data from managers and organisations in Russia, intertwined with a focus group session and in-depth interviews with managers and employees randomly selected from the online survey’s sample. The results of the online surveys were processed by SPSS. For the focus group and in-depth interviews qualitative analyses was conducted. The findings reveal that organisational culture is a dominant factor in the transfer of knowledge and that the Russian national culture has a determinant role in organisations, specifically in the process of knowledge transfer and sustainable creation of values, in both directions.

This thesis examines the issue of cultural transfer within the context of modern Korean architecture and urbanism from 1990 to 2010 in light of globalising forces. My research is based on the proposition that the emergence of any new architecture in South Korea cannot be simply categorized according to the terms familiar in predominant western architectural theories and practices. To demonstrate this point, it investigates a range of contemporary Korean cultural conditions: hyper-digitisation of everyday life, prevalence of crowd-sourced popular culture, and a ‘bang’ entertainment room phenomenon for the collective enjoyment of leisure in dense urban sites. As a result, the thesis challenges the usual notion of a balanced exchange between the ‘foreign’ and the ‘local’ within the processes of globalisation, thereby disputing the idea of an easy mutual influence between different cultures. Instead, my study aims to build a critical method which can respond to complex issues of the transfer of cultural aspects, in regard not only to socio-political conditions but also to those of linguistic and cultural diversity. I also present through some outline design explorations a new framework through which to think about architectural and urban design in South Korea, and thus for understanding its appropriation within a broader, globalising cultural context. A key argument in my research is that just as increasing levels of economic, business, cultural and communication exchanges are now being developed between the two parts of Korea, so too large-scale architectural projects are required to create continuous urban projects predicated on innovative ‘themed’ socio-economic environments. This PhD study hence proposes a new mode of architectural and urban production that carries significance both as an experimental approach in general, and also one that can serve to guide future developments following the (hopeful) future reunification between North and South Korea.

This thesis demonstrates how the works of art and architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983), a British scholar of German origin, played a major part in the accession of the history of art and architecture to the status of an academic discipline in the United Kingdom in the 1930s and 40s. This case study, along with the various networks that played a part in his displacement from Germany to Britain in 1933, sheds a different light on current research on the history of émigré intellectuals, as it seeks to show that there is a latent conflict between the ideal of universalism in science and the national socio-cultural vectors at play in transnational displacements. Our research focuses on methodological, institutional and historiographical transfers that made Pevsner’s career into a milestone in the historiography of art, architecture and design. It tackles the main aspects of his contribution, from the issue of the Modern movement, through the use of the concept of space in the architectural discourse based on the principle of empathy (Einfühlung), to the exploration of the artistic production and the architectural heritage of Pevsner’s country of adoption. Our contention is that the role of an art historian as a mediator between his subject and society goes beyond the realm of academia. This thesis shows how Pevsner found a place in British culture as editor, broadcaster and art critic, while basing these activities on German models, and how these activities gradually transformed an interpreter of culture into a cultural institution.

Within the context of the expansion of the United States as a world power, we study the extent to which their intellectualdevelopment is enhanced by bidirectional exchanges of students or transfers from French institutions to America. Amongthose, we take in in-depth look at the Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques in Paris. Having combed its archives, we could list theAmerican students there, from its founding to the end of our period of study in 1932. We point out the importance of somestudents and study the schools it gave birth to in America. We explain the transfer from the Musée Social or Paris to the U.S..We take into account the networking between French and American historians, geographers, economists, sociologists andother university scholars. We analyze exchange students, including those from programs created by James Hyde and AlbertKahn, with a particular emphasis on Harvard University. France is determined to attract foreign students at the expense ofGermany where the majority of the best American scholars were trained. Em escolas internacionais de São Paulo, currículos e metodologias de ensino internacionais e transnacionais são utilizadas. Em Matemática, estas escolas ensinam, por exemplo, um algoritmo para divisão que não é normalmente utilizados no sistema educacional brasileiro. Como a maioria dos alunos destas escolas são brasileiros, isto é caracterizado como educational borrowing. No entanto, ao estudar alguns destes elementos não tradicionais na cultura escolar brasileira, percebemos que suas origens não são facilmente identificáveis. Com a intensificação da globalização nas últimas décadas, influências estrangeiras têm se tornado mais complexas. No caso de alguns métodos, em face das dificuldades em estabelecer o país emprestador, se faz necessário complementar as teorias da Educação Comparada para que pesquisadores possam utilizar tais subsídios teóricos e entender o fenômeno com coerência. Complementos que são obtidos à luz da Antropologia, especificamente através da teoria de antropólogos como Michel de Certeau, que nos ajuda a melhor compreender a maneira com que os alunos individualizam estes produtos da educação internacional. A seguir, de volta ao domínio da Educação Comparada, os modelos típicos ideais de Brian Holmes podem auxiliar na decisão sobre o que pode ser copiado de um sistema educacional e as prováveis consequências destas ações. Ao fim da pesquisa, conclui-se que de fato os consumidores da educação internacional aqui mencionada nem sempre tomam posse deste produto conforme o anunciado pelos seus produtores.
At international schools in São Paulo, international and transnational curricula and methodology are utilized. In mathematics, these schools teach, for instance, an algorithm for division that is not normally adopted in the Brazilian educational system. Since the majority of the students of these schools are Brazilian, this is identified as educational borrowing. However, as we study some of these non-traditional elements in the Brazilian School Culture, we realize that their origins are not easily determined. With the intensification of the globalization during the last decades, foreigner influences have become more complex. It is hard to determine the lender country in the case of some methods and because of these difficulties it is necessary to complement the theories of Compared Education so that the researchers can make use of such theoretical resources and understand the phenomenon with coherence. Such complements are obtained in the light of the anthropology, specifically through the theory of anthropologists such as Michel de Certeau, who help us to better understand the way students individualize these products of the international education. Then, going back to the grounds of Compared Education, the ideal typical models of Brian Holmes can give us aid to decide what can and what can not be copied from other educational systems and the possible consequences of such actions. At the end of this research, it is concluded that in fact the consumers of the international education mentioned here not always take poss of it according to what is announced by its producers.

The thesis sets out to examine cultural transfer from Neapolitan dialect into English, in the translations of plays by the contemporary Neapolitan playwright Eduardo De Filippo (1900-1984). It involves a comparative textual analysis of English translations of a selection of De Filippo’s plays in order to identify the translation strategies employed by each translator to represent Neapolitan cultural identity. Eduardo De Filippo can be defined as one of the most prominent contemporary Italian playwrights who employed dialect to portray characters who trespassed the boundaries of both Neapolitan and Italian society and to address social issues which were comprehensible to a vast public. In fact, his innovative contribution resided in the ability to bring vernacular theatre to national and international level. Thus the objective of the study is to bring to light the universality of De Filippo’s message albeit the limited linguistic medium and to show how his theatre is represented in the Anglo-Saxon milieu. The aim of previous critical studies on the matter has been to focus on the stage representations of De Filippo’s oeuvres, without particular emphasis on the analysis of the dialect. Drawing on a variety of theatre as well as translational frameworks (critical work on translation and in particular on theatre translation, the polysystem theory, the descriptive approach, anthropology, and sociolinguistics) I argue that dialect theatre represents an autonomous genre, separate from standard Italian theatre, which needs to be accounted for in translation, and in particular that the domestication of the language reduces the cultural impact of the original plays. The thesis is the first study to suggest that lexicological issues reflect the interpretation of the Neapolitan society in the translated texts and to provide evidence of the appropriation of Neapolitan culture by the receiving theatrical system through the linguistic choices made in translation.

This dissertation defines aspects of Russian culture which bear the marks of French influence and explores the historical origins of that influence. While it is generally acknowledged that Russia’s culture has been influenced by France, no systematic history of the origins of this influence has been written. Previous research has dealt only superficially with the topic, focusing almost exclusively on the Francophile preferences of society’s elite. The present study examines Russian society more broadly and explores those elements of French cultural influence still relevant today through an historical analysis of the Russian language. French loanwords found in dictionaries from the time of Peter the Great to the present are analyzed chronologically and topically, yielding the conclusion that the most significant period of long-lasting French influence was the turn of the nineteenth century and was primarily cultural in nature—including the areas of fashion, cuisine, the arts, interior design and etiquette—but was also in areas related to technology and official administration. Following this lexical analysis, other primary sources—archival documents, military memoirs, and periodical publications from the resultant period—are searched for influences in these areas, especially during the period’s two major Franco-Russian events: the wave of immigration to Russia following the French Revolution and Russia’s war with Napoleon. The former facilitated deep cultural enrichment as native Frenchmen and French women, engaged in various occupations, acted as cultural mentors to the Russian nobility. The latter facilitated broad cultural immersion as tens of thousands of Russian troops—noble and common alike—marched into France and experienced French culture firsthand. This dissertation concludes that both of these explosive events, though by no means the beginning of French influence, were unique in the depth and permanence of their mark upon Russia’s culture.

Knowledge is now considered superior to technology and capital as a source of competitive advantage, however needs to be efficiently transferred and well managed to explore its full potential. The process of knowledge transfer is actually the core business of training organisations. Even though, as in the present study, knowledge might be developed and maintained by third parties, yet, it is up to the training organisation to work on transferring this knowledge to their trainees. This study intends to investigate three main issues: 1. How knowledge is effectively transferred into an IT training organisation especially in Egypt. 2. Do cultural, political and socio-economic factors affect the process of knowledge transfer especially if this knowledge is an externally produced one coming from a different foreign context? 3. How knowledge can be repacked to suit local trainees. Attempting to cover these previous issues, a list of research aims and objectives followed by research questions were set up. The literature review which was found convenient, from the researcher's point of view, to cover so far these domains is shown in the contents of this report. In order to get empirical data to allow thorough analysis and investigation different research methodologies and tools were used and initial results and findings that were obtained will be presented during the course of the report.

The development of Neolithic in the South Caucasus remains a poorly understood phenomenon. The first agricultural communities have been identified at sites such as Aratashen and Aknashen. They are semi-sedentary group living in mud brick houses, with the earliest layers of these sites already showed fully domesticated species Conflicting hypotheses have suggested both a local independent agricultural development or a full population replacement by neighboring Near Eastern groups. Therefore, my project was dedicated to the identification of possible contacts between groups in this region and external groups, and how to characterize these interactions in order to understand how Neolithic came into being in the South Caucasus. The lithic model that I have developed focuses on the social aspect of technological practices. It assumes that stone tool production sequences are culturally specific, and that they may be shared in full only through complete access to the place of teaching, the enculturating environment. I have studied five lithic assemblages from four different sites were studied and compared. Two sites were “Mesolithic”, i.e., relying on hunter-gatherer modes of subsistence (Kmlo-2 and Bavra-Ablari), and two sites were Neolithic (Aknashen and Aratashen). Therefore, we were able to reconstruct this scenario, putting forth that the first contact between Near Eastern farmers and groups living in the South Caucasus may have taken place during the 9th millennium BCE. These contacts remained outside of the enculturating environment, but led to the diffusion of a very specific tool type known as the Kmlo, or Çayonu, tool. Early in the 6th millennium BCE, groups settled in the southwest Caspian belt moved within the South Caucasus, settling in the river valleys of the Kura and the Araxes. There, they interacted with existing Mesolithic communities following an open-static-parasitic frontier model involving unilateral movement of goods from the Neolithic to the Mesolithic groups. Such contact, taking place outside of the enculturating environment, was probably the result of transhumance of agricultural groups entering Mesolithic ecological niches. However, this did not lead to the adoption of agriculture by local groups, who were most likely pushed out of the areas in which they had previously lived.

Dans la lignée des travaux de l'historien allemand Peter Reichel sur la notion de fascination totalitaire et du mouvement historique initié en France par Fred Kupferman, François Hourmant ou encore Sophie Cœuré autour du voyage des intellectuels en Union soviétique dans les années 1930, cette thèse a pour objectif de dénouer les rouages du voyage en terre nazie, de l'accession d'Adolf Hitler à la chancellerie jusqu'à la déclaration du second conflit mondial. Thématique délaissée par l'historiographie du national-socialisme préférant voir dans le voyage une évidence anecdotique relevant des nécessités diplomatiques, elle s'impose cependant à l'historien devant la masse d'archives léguées. Engluée et limitée jusque-là dans la représentation classique d'un Brasillach devant la « cathédrale de lumière » de Nuremberg ou du sort des délégations étrangères aux Jeux olympiques de Berlin 1936, la pratique du voyage ne peut se résumer à une vision archétypale voulant que seul le « fasciste en formation » ne parcoure un IIIème Reich réduit à quelques points névralgiques. A partir de sources issues du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, de périodiques, de récits de voyages et d'ouvrages rétrospectifs (mémoires, correspondances, écrits privés), ce travail s'articule autour de trois axes allant de l'intérêt de l'étude du déplacement dans la compréhension d'un phénomène totalitaire, aux temps du voyage (accueil, séjour sur place, réception du voyage) tout en analysant le rôle du voyage et son degré d'implication dans la formation d'une bienveillance personnelle ou d'un rejet du totalitarisme. Un des intérêts fondamentaux de l'étude du voyage en Allemagne hitlérienne réside dans les motivations préalables conduisant au déplacement. Le voyage est avant tout objet d'histoire vécu et perçu par ceux qui l'entreprennent. Cette conscience du « moment d'histoire » entrepris amène à étudier les motivations structurelles du voyage (intérêt pour la modernité politique, déconstruction de son propre modèle national, naissance d'une diplomatie parallèle) comme existentielles (inspiration morale, dépassement de la frontière de la germanité), tout en mettant en avant l'étonnante diversité des voyageurs (origine géographique, culturelle et sociale), signe de l'attraction magnétique du national-socialisme au-delà des frontières (insertion dans le débat de la place de la spécificité nationale dans le cadre d'un minimum fasciste). Préalable indispensable à toute compréhension du phénomène, les temps du voyage permettent d'éclairer la construction d'une véritable politique nazie à l'égard du voyageur étranger d'une part, de souligner la prégnance des réseaux et contacts d'autre part. L'étude du temps sur place sera orientée autour de l'impression de l'accessible rencontrée par les voyageurs. Le temps du retour d' « Hitlérie », fait d'une variété de la forme et de l'usage, permettra de mettre en avant l'obligation naturelle, morale - voire politique - de relayer les impressions de la « chose vue ». Enfin, le voyage comme maçon d'une nouvelle image de l'Allemagne dans les mentalités collectives étrangères viendra clore ce travail. La construction de l'image totalitaire semble aller de pair avec une tentative de rationalisation de l'aveuglement rencontré quand, pour d'autres, le voyage est un mécanisme de résistance. La place du voyageur face à la question juive devient également nécessité. D'une tribune offerte à l'antisémitisme aux premiers actes de dénonciation, le voyage devient un outil de la pensée intellectuelle. In line with the studies by German historian Peter Reichel concerning the fascination of totalitarianism and the historical movement initiated in France by Fred Kupferman, along with the studies by François Hourmant and Sophie Coeuré regarding intellectuals traveling in Soviet union in the 1930's, the objective of this thesis is to describe the experience of the voyage on Nazi territory, from Hitler's accession to power to the beginning of World War II. This theme has been disregarded in the national-socialism historiography, due to the fact that they viewed the voyage as an anecdotic evidence of diplomatic duty. However, the amount of archives bequeathed on this topic led historians to believe that it is more relevant than previously thought. Limited to the classical image of Brasillach in front of the “Cathedral of Light” of Nuremberg as well as the image of foreign delegations during the Olympic Games of Berlin in 1936, the act of traveling shouldn't be reduced to this archetypal vision implying that only the “future fascists” would travel and discover the IIIrd Reich. Using sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, newspapers, travel logs, essays, and letters, this work hinges on three parts covering the significance to study the voyage with the goal to understand the totalitarianism phenomenon, the different stages of the voyage (the reception, their stay, the return to their countries of origin), and to analyze the role and the importance of the voyage in the development of either an acceptance or a rejection towards the totalitarianism. One of the main interests in studying the voyage in Hitler's Germany is the reasoning behind the motivation for the voyage to take place. Traveling is at first a moment in history lived and perceived by those who experience it. This awareness of the experienced moment in history leads us to study the structural motivations of this voyage (interest for modern politics, deconstruction of our own national model, beginning of a parallel diplomacy) and also the existential motivations (moral inspiration, surpassing the line of “germanity”) while underlining the surprising diversity of the travelers (geographical, cultural and social origin), which shows the power of attraction of the national-socialism far across the borders. Prior to understanding this phenomenon, the different phases of the voyage help to enlighten the construction of a specific Nazi policy towards the foreign traveler on one hand, and to underline the existence and development of a real network of contacts on the other. This component will examine how the model of national-socialism seemed attainable for the travelers. The return from Germany will bring to the forefront the feeling of obligation for the travelers to explain and describe what had been experienced during the travel. Finally, the voyage as propagator of a new image of Germany in foreigner's minds will complete this study. The shaping of the totalitarian image seems to go hand in hand with an attempt to rationalize the obliviousness of a part of the population, while for others the voyage is a mechanism of resistance. The standpoint of the travelers towards the Jew's situation is also necessary to broach. Like a window that offers a view on anti-Semitism and the first acts of denunciation, the voyage becomes a tool of intellectual thinking. The awareness of this rising totalitarianism makes the traveler a knowledgeable man, lost in the masses, sliding in this transnational fascism first learned in the Reich

This study explores the ways in which organisational culture affects the transfer of learning. Much of the research in this area has focussed on the transfer of learning from formal training courses taking a positivist approach to examine specific influencing factors. This study takes a wider view exploring learning transfer through the lens of organisational culture. This study also takes a more holistic view of learning, exploring the ways in which current models of transfer might apply to both formal and informal types of learning. The study focuses on the UK civil service, as a sector not yet considered by the literature. The methodology takes a social constructionist approach and uses qualitative research methods to build a contextualised view of learning transfer, using individuals’ perceptions of their organisations. A series of one to one and group interviews were used to gather data from three samples groups. A system of thematic analysis was chosen to identify a variety of categories and themes for analysis. The study concludes that existing models of transfer do not reflect the complex and iterative nature of learning transferred from a wider range of learning experiences. It also concludes that in the civil service a transfer-supportive culture relies on the creation of a supportive ethos that encourages transfer through sub-cultures and informal practices, rather than imposed formal systems and active line management practices. The success of these informal practices is because they reflect more closely the cultural assumptions learners. This study recognises that this approach is dependent on a positive individual disposition towards learning and a management practice of benign neglect. By taking a holistic approach to learning and a wider perspective of organisational influences, via the lens of organisational culture, this study has added to our understanding of learning transfer beyond existing models.

This thesis explores the complex and intricate linguistic and cultural negotiations which take place when Anglophone films are subtitled for a Chinese audience. The project seeks to break new ground by offering the first study of subtitling in relation to thematically heterogeneous genres of films and different disciplines. This contemporary phenomenon of subtitling from English into Chinese thus provides a valuable case study for the discipline of Translation Studies as it does not straddle different disciplines but interconnects them. The project also provides new insights into the reshaping of English-language films for a contemporary Chinese audience and the ways in which the Chinese subtitles are mediated for their domestic agenda. This project builds on Venuti’s binary argument in relation to foreignisation and domestication and extends it to complex translational processes which sit at the confluence of linguistic, cultural, historical, political and commercial considerations. A new theoretical frame is generated to make a theoretical contribution to reading Chinese subtitles in association with different disciplines rather than focusing on translation theories in isolation. The Chinese subtitles reevaluate the complexities and specificities of British culture linked to the varied films and posit Chinese cultural values to shape the multidirectional facet of translation as much as the original source shapes its own. The study thus suggests that the hybrid dynamics of transformation occurs as a result of the various forms of transfer and the interaction between them: linguistic, cultural, political, historical, ideological transfer and the transfer of gender, sexuality, and humour. Through this transformation, the Chinese subtitling process allows for elements of British heritage to permeate the Chinese culture with the ultimate goal of enhancing China’s own cultural values.

Aim: With the tendency of globalization, the field of the human resource management (HRM) in multinational companies (MNC) becomes a heated topic. Being interested in this field, we choose Bank of China (BOC) to investigate what factors influence the process of transfer and adaptation of HRM practices for a Chinese bank in a cross cultural environment. Method: This work has been adopted qualitative method as the primary data by interviewed six respondents of managers and employees from BOC in China and Sweden by means of the face-to-face interview, e-mail, Skype and the online instant messaging software (QQ). Extant literature, books and online resources are the secondary data. Result & Conclusions: The result reveals that when transferring and adapting the HRM practices in a foreign country, MNCs are influenced by national and company level factors. At the national level, national culture and laws and regulations in the targeted country are the primary aspects while corporate culture of the targeted company and the strategic goals of the branches are the main factors at the company level. Suggestions for future research: This study only focuses on four main factors affecting the process of transfer and adaption of HRM process, which may not contain all factors. Besides, it is based on a case study with qualitative data, thus the research areas can be expanded to a broader domain and the research methods can be used in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Last but not least, staffing performance can be a very interesting field to be investigated. Contribution of the thesis: We contribute with a model based on four factors to identify the process of transfer and adaptation of HRM practices in a MNC. We also make a unique contribution to empirical study of the process of HRM practices of a Chinese bank entering to Sweden. Finally, this model can be utilized as a tool of other MNCs when implementing HRM practices from the home country to the host country.

L’histoire culturelle et religieuse de l’Allemagne aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles est profondément marquée par le piétisme. Mouvement de renouveau religieux au sein des Églises protestantes, le piétisme favorise aussi l’apparition de cercles et de communautéshétérodoxes et séparatistes. C’est dans ce milieu du « piétisme radical » qu’a évolué Charles-Hector de Saint-George, marquis de Marsay (1688-1753). Issu d’une famille huguenote française, il a vécu principalement en Allemagne, dans le comté religieusement tolérant de Wittgenstein-Berlebourg. Nourri par la doctrine de la quiétiste française Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon dite « Madame Guyon » (1648-1717), Marsay écrit à partir des années 1730 plusieurs ouvrages religieux publiés à la fois en français et dans leur traduction allemande ; ouvrages qui surent prôner et diffuser la mystique de Mme Guyon dans le milieu du piétisme radical. En outre, il rédige une autobiographie et entretient des correspondances intenses avec des amis en Allemagne et en Suisse. C’est l’ensemble de ces sources, inédites et peu connues par la recherche, qui constitue le corpus de notre étude.Le cadre méthodologique qui nous a paru le plus propice pour explorer notre sujet est celui du transfert culturel. L’étude de l’oeuvre de Charles-Hector de Marsay s’annonce en effet féconde pour le chercheur s’intéressant à la fois à la littérature du piétisme radical et à la dynamique complexe des échanges culturels entre les aires francophone et germanophone, entre le monde catholique et le monde protestant. Notre thèse cherche donc à élucider, à travers une étude de cas, les conditions de la réception des écrits de Madame Guyon dans la littérature du piétisme radical, en mettant l’accent sur le rôle des réseaux spirituels, mais aussi sur les modalités de cette réception, envisagées comme l’appropriation et la transformation d’idées religieuses, mais aussi d’un modèle d’écriture
The cultural and religious history of Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries is deeply marked by pietism. Pietism was a movement of religious renewal within the Protestant churches, and it also fostered the emergence of heterodox and separatist circles andcommunities. The work and live of Charles-Hector de Saint-George, Marquis de Marsay (1688-1753) was heavily influences by this environment of “radical pietism””. Born into a French Huguenot family, he lived mainly in Germany, in the religiously tolerant county of Wittgenstein-Berlebourg. Nourished by the doctrine of the French quietist Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon known as "Madame Guyon" (1648-1717), from the 1730s onwards Marsay wrote several religious works published both in French and in their German translation. These works spread the mysticism of Madame Guyon into the circles of radical pietism. In addition, he wrote an autobiography and maintained intense correspondence with friends in Germany and Switzerland. All these sources, unpublished and little known, constitute the corpus for our research. The methodological framework which seemed to us the most favorable to explore our corpus is that of cultural transfer. The study of the work of Charles-Hector de Marsay is of great interest to researchers of both the literature of radical pietism and the complex dynamics of cultural exchanges between the French and German-speaking regions , between the Catholic and Protestant worlds. Our thesis therefore seeks to clarify through a case study, the reception Madame Guyon's writings received in the literature of radical pietism, with an emphasis on the role of spiritual networks, but also on the modalities of this reception, which we see as an appropriation and transformation both of religious ideas and a certain model of writing

This PhD research by project is for designers investigating relations between culture and design through an experiential perspective of Chi- nese culture in terms of developing a new understanding of ‘Chineseness’. ‘Chineseness’ in my work, can be re-mapped as a form of communication that deals with Chinese culture in design. It is not just along with historical stereotypes, nor a remote copy of other countries’ successful cultural trans- fers, but rather should be inseparable from the radical social phenomena and design culture already emerging within contemporary China. Through a series of design projects, my research is ultimately allowing Chineseness to be less implied and instead, to be made manifest, in terms of what behav- iours over symbolism and decoration. New knowledge is articulated through exploring my understanding and its shifts during my approach to re-map Chinese cultural elements in design and search for the meaning of ‘Chineseness’. This research remarks the stereotypes, generalisations and categorisations when designers deal with cross-cultural design from both non-Chinese and Chinese angles. The thesis comprises three parts. The first part is a contextual review of cultural elements and appropriate methods. The second part explores a systematic approach to reflecting Chineseness from various cultural an- gles. These action-research method-led projects describe three ways of ex- ploring the transfer of Chinese culture into design: symbolic, behavioural and political/philosophical. They culminate in an enabling developmental structure through which designers can deal with Chinese cultural com- plexity in design. The third part sees two final projects that reflect back and re-evaluate what Chineseness could be. The thesis contributes a three-layer structure that reflects Chinese cultural elements into design through meth- ods and analysis of values in practice. Additionally, for the readers sympa- thetic with a systematic design approach or cultural identitarianism, this work addresses a view of critical understanding for facing Chinese culture in design.

This dissertation investigates the notion of audio-visual translation of an animated film by Walt Disney Animation Studios, The Princess and the Frog (Clements and Musker, 2009). In particular, it analyses the various translation strategies employed in the film and attempts to determine whether specific audio-visual translation techniques are employed more regularly than others. The thesis is made up of three chapters. Chapter 1 provides an overview of audio-visual translation strategies. Chapter 2 discusses the role of language in everyday life and in movies and the role of the voice artists. Moreover, Chapter 2 discusses the role of the first African American Princess and the role of the city of New Orleans within the animated movie. Finally, Chapter 3 provides the multimodal transcription of different songs and dialogues.

Pourtant, la conception d’une région de la mer Baltique étaitdéjà fondée à l’époque de la «Sattelzeit» sur le besoin de pouvoir situer les riverains de la merBaltique comme une unité culturelle, quelque part dans le grand Nord. Dans l’imaginationdes voyageurs en 1800, la région de la mer Baltique est en fait déjà cet espace d’interactionset d’imbrications qui constitue la base évidente des approches modernes de la recherche.Bien sûr, il y avait les divers royaumes, provinces ou villes qui jouèrent un rôle pour lesvoyageurs. Cela ne signifie pourtant pas qu’il soit impossible de retrouver dans les récits devoyages certains points communs, manifestés sous forme d’un caractère «nordique»supérieur de ces riverains. La notion de l’agir en Grèce ancienne a, dans les études grecques au XXème siècle, fait l’objet d’un débat important, fondé sur des textes philosophiques – avant tout Aristote – et littéraires – particulièrement Homère et la tragédie grecque. Le débat porte sur la prise de position du lecteur moderne face au traitement antique de cette notion, entre familiarité et sentiment d’étrangeté. Le philologue allemand Bruno Snell et le philosophe français Jean-Pierre Vernant ont apporté des contributions fondamentales à ce sujet.Dans la présente thèse de doctorat, les positions des deux chercheurs sont comparées à lueur de leurs méthodes – « Geistesgeschichte », histoire de l’esprit et « Wortphilologie », philologie du mot, pour Snell, psychologie historique, sociologie, anthropologie et structuralisme chez Vernant. Par ailleurs, la thèse analyse dans quelle mesure leurs contributions s’ancrent dans les traditions nationales respectives des études grecques. Cette réflexion est particulièrement intéressante dans le cas de Bruno Snell et de Jean-Pierre Vernant qui pratiquaient la recherche de manière explicitement interdisciplinaire et internationale. The notion of acting in ancient Greece was intensely discussed in the field of ancient Greek scholarship during the 20th century on the basis of philosophical texts – above all by Aristotle – and literary texts – particularly by Homer and the Greek tragedy. The debate revolves around the position of the modern reader with regard to the ancient notion, between estrangement and familiarity. He is faced with the following alternative: is the Greek conception of acting familiar to him, being the source of the western one, or has it become absolutely alien to him? The German philologist Bruno Snell and the French philosopher Jean-Pierre Vernant have made fundamental contributions to this debate.This PhD compares the positions of both researchers with regard to their methodologies – Snell’s « Geistesgeschichte », history of the spirit and « Wortphilologie », philology of the word, and Vernant’s historical psychology, sociology, anthropology and structuralism. Moreover, this dissertation analyses to what extent their contributions are rooted in the respective national traditions of ancient Greek scholarship. This reflection is particularly interesting in the case of Bruno Snell and Jean-Pierre Vernant, as they both pursued an explicitly international and interdisciplinary approach to research. Die Frage nach dem Begriff des Handelns bei den Griechen wurde in der Klassischen Philologie des 20. Jahrhunderts anhand philosophischer (vor allem Aristoteles) und literarischer Texte (vor allem Homer und der griechischen Tragödie) stark debattiert. Gegenstand dieser Debatte ist die Haltung des heutigen Lesers gegenüber der antiken Auffassung dieses Begriffs, zwischen Vertrautheit und Fremdheit. Dabei stellt sich folgende Frage: Steht uns heute das griechische Konzept des Handelns nah, als Ursprung des abendländischen Konzeptes, oder ist es uns ganz und gar fremd geworden? Der deutsche Altphilologe Bruno Snell und der französische Philosoph Jean-Pierre Vernant haben zu diesem Thema relevante und bedeutende Beiträge geleistet. Die Positionen des deutschen und des französischen Wissenschaftlers werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit in Bezug auf ihre jeweilige Methodik − Geistesgeschichte und Wortphilologie bei Snell, historische Psychologie, Soziologie, Anthropologie und Strukturalismus bei Vernant − verglichen. Darüber hinaus wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern ihre Beiträge in ihrer jeweiligen Wissenschaftstradition verwurzelt sind. Diese Fragestellung ist im Falle Snells und Vernants von besonderem Interesse, da beide explizit eine überfachliche und internationale Auffassung von Wissenschaft vertreten. La questione della nozione del agire presso gli antichi Greci fu l’oggetto di un dibattito importante nella filologia classica del Novecento, fondato sia su testi filosofici (sopratutto Aristotele) che letterari (innanzitutto Omero e la tragedia greca). L’argomento del dibattito è la presa di posizione del lettore moderno di fronte alla nozione antica, fra estraniamento e confidenza. Sorge dunque la domanda seguente: ci risulta familiare la nozione greca del agire, in quanto origine della nozione occidentale, oppure è diventata assolutamente estranea per noi? Il filologo tedesco Bruno Snell e il filosofo francese Jean-Pierre Vernant hanno portato contributi fondamentali a questo argomento. Nella tesi di dottorato, le posizioni dei due scientifici vengono comparate rispetto ai loro metodi – « Geistesgeschichte », storia dello spirito e « Wortphilologie », filologia della parola, presso Snell, psicologia storica, sociologia, antropologia e strutturalismo presso Vernant. Inoltre, la tesi esamina quanto i loro contributi siano radicati nelle tradizioni scientifiche nazionali. Les psychologues québécois sont de plus en plus amenés à intervenir auprès d'une clientèle de diverses origines ethniques, notamment dans la métropole que constitue la grande région montréalaise. Ceux-ci se trouvent ainsi souvent à adapter leurs interventions en fonction de divers cadres de référence culturels. Dans un contexte de psychothérapie interculturelle, les difficultés provenant des différences culturelles du psychothérapeute et du client d'origine ethnique différente peuvent entraver la qualité de la relation thérapeutique et, par conséquent, nuire à l'efficacité du processus thérapeutique. La connaissance de la perspective des professionnels est donc importante afin d'améliorer la qualité des interventions offertes à de tels clients. Ainsi, l'objectif général de la présente étude est de mettre en évidence et de mieux comprendre le vécu expérientiel de psychologues en lien avec l'alliance thérapeutique en contexte de psychothérapie interculturelle, et ce, par la voie d'une recherche qualitative. Aussi, de façon plus spécifique, les objectifs de cette recherche sont d'explorer l'expérience de psychologues québécois qui reçoivent des clients d'une origine ethnique différente de la leur, notamment de façon à: 1) en cerner les particularités; 2) relever les facteurs liés à la diversité culturelle qui peuvent nuire à l'établissement et au maintien de l'alliance thérapeutique; 3) identifier les stratégies adaptatives qu'adoptent ces psychologues pour contrer les obstacles à l'alliance thérapeutique liés à la différence culturelle. À cette fin, 8 psychologues québécois, pratiquant la psychothérapie interculturelle de type individuel avec une clientèle adulte dans la grande région de Montréal, ont été rencontrés dans le cadre d'entrevues individuelles semi-structurées. Une analyse thématique des données recueillies a permis de cerner différents aspects signifiants dans la relation thérapeutique interculturelle, lesquels sont classés en six grandes catégories: 1) la perception du psychologue de la relation thérapeutique avec un client d'origine ethnique différente; 2) la perception du psychologue de son rôle en tant que professionnel; 3) les contributions du client et du psychologue à l'alliance thérapeutique en contexte de psychothérapie interculturelle; 4) les obstacles à l'alliance thérapeutique; 5) les stratégies adaptatives du psychologue pour contrer les obstacles à l'alliance thérapeutique; 6) les aspects positifs rencontrés par le psychologue dans l'expérience de la relation psychologue-client en intervention interculturelle. Un cadre d'analyse psychodynamique permet d'exposer les transferts et contre-transferts personnels et culturels qui influencent la relation thérapeutique interculturelle. Malgré certaines limites méthodologiques, tel le nombre restreint de l'échantillon ou certains inhibiteurs affectant la capacité des participants à relater leur expérience, les propos recueillis tracent un portrait riche des enjeux qui peuvent affecter l'établissement et le maintien de l'alliance thérapeutique en contexte interculturel. Plusieurs avenues de recherche sont suggérées, à la lumière de la présente étude.
