This chapter describes the history of Galileo’s discovery of the law of fall and the parabolic trajectory, beginning with early work on the physics of motion by predecessors like the Oxford Scholars, Tartaglia and the polymath Simon Stevin who dropped lead weights from the leaning tower of Delft three years before Galileo dropped lead weights from the leaning tower of Pisa. The story of how Galileo developed his ideas of motion is described in the context of his studies of balls rolling on inclined plane and the surprising accuracy he achieved without access to modern timekeeping. Motion was always on Galileo’s mind. He saw motion in his father’s stringed instruments, vibrating in rational resonances. He saw motion in the lantern high above in the Duomo di Pisa, swinging with fixed regularity.

This chapter shows how the Newtonian law of motion of a particle subject to a gradient force derived from a ‘potential energy’ can always be obtained from an extremal principle, or ‘principle of least action’. According to Newton’s first law, the trajectory representing the motion of a free particle between two points p1 and p2 is a straight line. In other words, out of all the possible paths between p1 and p2, the trajectory effectively followed by a free particle is the one that minimizes the length. However, even though the use of the principle of extremal length of the paths between two points gives the straight line joining the points, this does not mean that the straight-line path is traced with constant velocity in an inertial frame. Moreover, the trajectory describing the motion of a particle subject to a force is not uniform and rectilinear.

Dazzle camouflage is a putative anti-predator adaptation that works to reduce predation by camouflaging movement itself, comprising coloration that interferes with predator perception of prey speed and trajectory. Accurately estimating speed and trajectory is essential for any predator that needs to know where its prey is likely to be in the near future so that it can position itself to intercept. The dazzle hypothesis is that prey coloration can interfere with these judgements. Experimental support for dazzle camouflage is currently very mixed, and we are not yet clear whether dazzle effects occur in natural systems. Here we first discuss illustrative examples of putative disruptive effects in biological and military design. Then we identify where firm and less firm conclusions can be made on the role of pattern contrast, pattern orientation, and internal object motion, before moving on to consider the evolution and ecology of dazzle camouflage.

Galileo Galilei was the first modern scientist, launching a new scientific method that superseded, after one and a half millennia, Aristotle’s physics. This chapter describes the trajectory of Galileo’s career, beginning with his studies of motion at the University of Pisa that were interrupted after his move to the University of Padua by his telescopic discoveries of mountains on the Moon and the moons of Jupiter. Galileo became the first rock star of science, and he used his fame to promote the ideas of Copernicus and the Sun-centered model of the solar system. But he pushed too far when he lampooned the Pope. Ironically, Galileo’s conviction for heresy and his sentence to house arrest for the remainder of his life gave him the free time to finally finish his work on the physics of motion, which he published in Two New Sciences in 1638.

This chapter argues that what Jencks learned as a result of exploration was the hard lesson that his region had been the site of sharp labor-management confrontation in the rugged mining districts of frontier Colorado. As his awareness of historical inequities sharpened, the trajectory of what was to be an eventful life as an advocate of social justice was set in motion. Jencks' long life in the human rights movement reflected these early perceptions of the world in which he lived and the culture of which he was a product. It was also this regional growth that in the late nineteenth century had once attracted his forebears to a developing mining community, service center, health resort, and railroad junction.

Neuropalliative care encompasses disorders of consciousness, cognitive impairment, trauma, and other conditions. Each prompts specific ethical considerations, such as the often shifting values (and even personalities) of patients with dementia, forcing one to determine whether previously expressed wishes are determinative. Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis maintain cognition long after motor failure, and the predicable trajectory makes possible specific advance care planning. Patients who have suffered acute spinal cord injury may initially demand withdrawal of life sustaining medical treatment, yet studies have shown a significant proportion eventually achieve a quality of life acceptable to them. And patients who have suffered a stroke often recover significant function, thus making early limitation of treatment a potential “self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Research suggests that intrasexual aggression during adolescence functions in competition over dating and reproductive opportunities and that aggressive strategies are more adaptive for females at this developmental stage. This sex difference appears to be related to the differential use of aggressive behavior and slightly uneven developmental trajectory between adolescent males and females. Competition over males is a common motive for female aggression during middle and high school, and, similar to adults, adolescent aggressors often use tactics of competitor derogation to lower the mate value of rivals. Taking an evolutionary perspective, findings demonstrate that adolescent females who engage in intrasexual peer aggression tend to have adaptive dating and sexual patterns, whereas those who are frequently victimized suffer maladaptive fitness outcomes. Recent research also shows that directed female intrasexual aggression during early stages of adolescence can be effective in both disrupting dating relationships of rivals and gaining access to desired dating partners.

Wildlife sanctuaries rescue, rehabilitate, reintroduce and provide life-long care for orphaned and injured animals. Understanding a sanctuary’s population dynamics—patterns in arrival, mortality and projected changes in population size—allows careful planning for future needs. Building on previous work on the population dynamics of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in sanctuaries of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA; Faust et al. 2011), this chapter extends analyses to the only PASA bonobo sanctuary. Its authors analysed historic demographic patterns and projected future population dynamics using an individual-based demographic model. The population has been growing at 6.7 per cent per year, driven by arrivals of new individuals (mean = 5.5 arrivals per year). Several model scenarios projecting varying arrival rates, releases and breeding scenarios clarify potential future growth trajectories for the sanctuary. This research illustrates how data on historic dynamics can be modelled to inform future sanctuary capacity and management needs.
