Technological advances revolutionize industrial processes, science, communications, and our way of life. However, developed societies have reached a stage in which the fascination with technological innovations often results in their indiscriminate consumption. In this paper, road traffic is used as a line of argument to demonstrate that the random introduction of technology does not imply benefits to society. Particularly, it is analyzed why some of the potential benefits of technological progress are lost in fields such as traffic monitoring, data handling, and traffic management, or in sustainable mobility initiatives, such as the introduction of electric vehicles or the implementation vehicle sharing projects. The risks faced in the future advent of autonomous vehicles are also discussed, and ideas for improvement suggested. A critical reflection on other transportation modes that are expected to be realized in the near future is included as well. The performed analysis evidences that the potential improvement in personal mobility will not become a reality if it exclusively relies on the latest technological devices, in line with consumers’ fantasies or economic interests. This is a statement that could be generalized to many other fields. The implementation/consumption of a particular technology should not be an objective in itself, but a tool to bring benefits to society.

Logistics in urban areas are currently suffering a radical transformation due to increasing population concentration and the massive use of cars as the preferred transport mode. These issues have resulted in higher pollution levels in urban environments and traffic congestion, impacting the world globally. Facilitating the use of sustainable transport modes is widely regarded as a necessity to cope with these adverse effects on citizens’ life quality. Hence, some regions, such as the European Union, are encouraging bus transport firms to make their business models more environmentally and socially sustainable. The aim of this research is thus to explore how technological innovations adopted by urban bus companies can improve cities’ sustainability. With this in mind, a combined Importance Performance Analysis (IPA)–Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was applied. In this way, their environmental and social sustainability effects were separately represented through hierarchical structures. Subsequently, the importance and performance ratings of technological innovations in each sustainability dimension were estimated, and thus two IPA grids were generated. These grids support managers in the establishment of more effective action plans to improve logistics sustainability in cities. The findings also provide guidance to governments on the technological innovations that should be promoted in future urban mobility plans.

Digital Twins are digital models of Cyber-Physical Systems to enable not only continuous monitoring but also active functional improvement of networked services, physical products, machines and devices. This capacity is of utmost importance when recognizing and exploring business opportunities in terms of organizational and technology innovations, as well as enriching the scope of system-relevant applications. Before being operated in their target ecosystems, such as smart cities, Cyber-Physical Systems can be validated and be run as Digital Twin through executable behavior models. The development of these models captures both, the horizontal, and the vertical integration of CPS components, thus allowing to consider specific system qualities, such as pollution effects of traffic. This article investigates methodological and technological aspects of developing and operating Digital Twins along system transformation processes. We consider integration depth and breadth, connectivity, organizational intelligence, validation, and implementation variability in the context of human-centered modeling and development. The approach enriches the understanding of digital twins towards digital representation of Cyber-Physical Systems allowing for dynamic allocation of physical and digital parts according to operational conditions. An exemplary case study in traffic management demonstrates the feasibility and practicability of the communication-centered approach.

The article describes sustainable transport principles and guides that can lead cities towards a more efficient transportation network. The authors also show good practice used in different urban areas, such as London and Copenhagen. Furthermore, Vilnius was analyzed for its sustainable transport rules and mobility. The authors took into consideration components such as public transport indicators, car use and the number of trips made by bicycle and by pedestrians. Additionally, solutions such as shared space, developing cycle routes and public transportation networks, dividing different transport modes, reducing distance and the need to travel, policy shifts and technological innovation are proposed. Moreover, already taken actions are also verified. The article, additionally, shows guidance for Vilnius, so it could be possible to develop a sustainable traffic network in the city. All analyses and guidance were based on using geographic information system (GIS) tools which allowed the authors to obtain the most reliable results. The artefacts are presented by means of a combination of graph theory algorithms in order to obtain sustainable transport using the example of a part of Vilnius City.

Safety should be the top priority for any automaker - because traffic accidents roughly killed 1.4 million people worldwide, ranking tenth on the World Health Organization's list of leading causes of death. Two decades ago, the focus was on passive safety, where it helps vehicle occupants to survive the crash. However, the frontier in safety innovation has moved beyond airbags and side-impact protection. Today, the frontier is active safety for preventing collisions before they occur. In Euro NCAP 2025 Roadmap, this active safety frontier falls under the primary safety and has become one of the overall safety rating initiatives toward safer cars. The primary safety features four technologies to be assessed, including driver monitoring (2020), automatic emergency steering (2020, 2022), autonomous emergency braking (2020, 2022), and V2x (2024). However, this initiative is partially encapsulated in the ASEAN NCAP Roadmap 2021-2025 under – 'Safety Assist' technological feature. For instance, in the new roadmap, ASEAN NCAP only focuses on Auto Emergency Braking (AEB) technology. This AEB is a feature to alert drivers to an imminent crash and help them use the car's maximum capacity. Therefore, as benchmarked to the EURO NCAP, this paper comprehensively reviews the AES demand, assessments, control, and testing methodology and can be further developed to consolidate for the ASEAN NCAP safety rating schemes.

The automated vehicle (AV) industry is a new growing industry of great interest. The environmental friendliness of AVs represents a core characteristic of their leap-forward development. The environmental effect of AVs, including its evaluation framework and algorithm, is a leading research area for continued technological innovation and market development in this field. This study focuses on three environmental aspects: the energy effect of AVs, the traffic effect of AVs on ground space, and the air effect of AVs on three-dimensional atmospheric space. First, an environmental effect evaluation indicator system that includes nine indices for AVs is constructed to be the basis for management decision making. Second, the interval-valued intuitionistic uncertain fuzzy (IVIUF) evaluation variable is used to solve the problem of data features that incorporate “crisp numbers” and “fuzzy numbers”. Moreover, geometric weights are added based on the generalized correlation aggregation operator. Then, the IVIUL-weighted geometric (IVIULWG) operator is developed, which includes the objective and subjective information of “crisp numbers” and “fuzzy numbers” and makes the mathematical characteristics more scientific and accurate. Finally, an evaluation example is used to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the algorithm.

Purpose The study aims to provide a comparative analysis of diverse challenges faced by different categories of hotels during the adoption of technological innovation. It also examines the role of technological innovations in enhancing the customer experience from a practitioner’s perspective. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative research is used to better understand the prevailing trends and execution challenges, using the interview method of collecting data. The sample includes owners and senior managers responsible for managing the property. Findings Indian hotels have lagged behind in technology adoption compared with their western counterparts, though the situation is now changing. The paper highlights the positive impact of technological innovation on customer experience and also identifies constraints in adopting technological innovations. Research limitations/implications All hotels participating in this study were selected from a single region of India. Hence, the results may not be a true representation of comparable hotels nationwide. Practical implications Findings of this study enable hotel managers and owners to appreciate the role of technological innovation as a differentiator and to understand a variety of nuances associated with technological innovation. Understanding of these dimensions will enable them to take cautious decisions about allocating resources for technological innovation and also to ensure that their customers are being offered maximum value-for-money. Originality/value The study was conducted in a developing economy where technological innovation is at a relatively early stage. This study explores its objectives from a practitioner’s perspective.

This study aims to investigate the influence of organizational and process eco-innovations on the introduction of product eco-innovations in R&D-intensive companies. We covered theory gaps by empirically demonstrating to what extent non-technological and technological eco-innovations are related. We used the Survey method to investigate a sample of Brazilian manufacturers from the electrical and electronics sectors, and we processed the data through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings of this study evidenced that non-technological eco-innovations are able to influence technological eco-innovations, both process and product, suggesting that the organizational eco-innovation strategy leads to sustainable technological path dependence in R&D-intensive companies. Additionally, findings demonstrated that the association between organizational and product eco-innovation is stronger whether mediated by process eco-innovation, so the result confirms an evolutionary perspective regarding the differentiated types of eco-innovation. We conclude that by investing in eco-innovative R&D projects, new environmental systems, teams' formation, information flow, and trends monitoring, the company creates a path dependence for technological eco-innovation of process and products.

In the context of climate change, studying the ecological efficiency (EE) of urban agglomerations is of great significance in promoting sustainable development. First, night light data are used as the expected output to build an evaluation index system based on the five major urban agglomerations, namely, the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomerations. Second, the super-efficient Epsilon-based (super-EBM) model and the input–output redundancy rates are used to measure the EE of the five major urban agglomerations from 2006 to 2018. Then, their spatial differences are explored with the help of the Gini coefficient. Finally, the spatial differences in the EE drivers of urban agglomerations are analyzed using Geodetector. The results reveal the following. (1) The EE of the five major urban agglomerations present the decline fluctuation trend of “∧”. However, this trend has slowed down. From the perspective of urban agglomeration, Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei > The Pearl River Delta > Chengdu–Chongqing > Yangtze River Delta > the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The lowest efficiency of the Yangtze River’s middle reaches has “high investment, low output, and high pollution” characteristics. (2) The EE of the five major urban agglomerations had weak synergistic development and noticeable spatial differences. The primary sources are inter-group differences and hypervariable density. (3) From the perspective of influencing, the difference in technological innovation levels (TEC) is the single leading factor in the differences in the EE space of urban agglomerations. In addition, the interaction combination of industrial structure upgrades (IDS) and traffic infrastructure (TRAF) is a crucial combination driver. However, the core influencing factors of spatial differences in EE in five urban agglomerations are heterogeneous. Among them, the nature-influencing factors of the EE space differences in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei and the Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomerations are environmental regulations (ER). Meanwhile, the influencing factor in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is the development of urbanization (URB). Moreover, the prominent factor in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River Delta urban agglomerations is foreign direct investment (FDI). On this basis, this study aims to promote ecological civilization construction in urban agglomerations and optimize regional integrated spatial patterns.

Based on the two knowledge dimensions of availability and accessibility, this study investigates the influence of cooperation with external organizations on technological, product, and process innovations. Using longitudinal data from Spanish manufacturing firms, we estimate dynamic random-effects probit models and thus take into account that technological innovations exhibit persistent behavior. We find that cooperation with suppliers and universities is positively associated with both product and process innovations. However, sectoral analysis according to technological intensity reveals that cooperation with suppliers increases the propensity to technological innovation in industries with a higher degree of technological intensity, while cooperation with universities increases the likelihood of innovation in industries with a lower degree of technological intensity. Moreover, empirical results indicate a high degree of true or genuine state dependence in both types of innovations. Based on these findings, we discuss the theoretical, managerial, and policy implications of the study.

Abstract Commercially-driven air traffic management (ATM) innovations typically aim to increase air space capacity and/or reduce delays. Here, their potential application for environmental mitigation is discussed. Both carbon dioxide (CO2) and non-CO2 climate impacts are considered, as are noise and air quality issues. We outline the technological, scientific and political barriers to an integrated approach to applying ATM technologies to environmental mitigation. These issues highlight the need to improve comparison and prioritisation of the emissions and effects of aviation.

Nowadays, the intrusion detection systems (IDSs) and network security assessments utilize the methodology of deep learning with several innovations like recurrent neural networks (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) for classifying the malicious traffic. For satisfying the requirements of real-time analysis because of main delay of the flow-based data minimization, these state-of-the-art systems face enormous challenges. The flow-based minimization is the time required for specific flow of packet accumulation and then feature extraction. In case the detection of malicious traffic at the packet level is accomplished first, and then significant reduction of time for detection happens, this ensures the online real-time malicious traffic detection depends upon the technologies of deep learning as a promising one.

Innovation has become a key factor of production, driving and sustaining firms’ productivity and competitiveness. Despite the growing importance attached to innovations, existing studies have produced different results on the factors driving firm-level innovations. This study investigates the factors driving innovations in the service and manufacturing sector firms in Thailand. The study tests proposed hypotheses using cross-sectional data on a sample of 613 firms from the World Bank enterprise survey of 2016. Our empirical results show that specific aspects of the business environment, such as policy instability, legal institutions, corruption, and informal competition, negatively influence non-technological innovations. Contrarily, we find that formal training, foreign technology licenses, research and development have marginal and additionality effects that positively enhance both technological and non-technological innovations. We provide practical implications for firm managers and policymakers in Thailand on adaptive measures to improve the business environment to make it conducive for firm-level innovations.

In direct line with the evolution of technology, but also with the density of vehicles that create congestion and often road accidents, traffic monitoring systems are parts that integrate intelligent transport systems (ITS). This is one of the most critical elements within transport infrastructures, an aspect that involves extremely important financial investments in order to collect and analyze traffic data with the aim of designing systems capable of properly managing traffic. Technological progress in the field of wireless communications is advancing, highlighting new traffic monitoring solutions, and the need for major classification, but proposing a real-time analysis model to guide the new systems is a challenge addressed in this manuscript. The involvement of classifiers and computerized detection applied to traffic monitoring cameras can outline extremely vital systems for the future of logistic transport. Analyzing and debating vehicle classification systems, examining problems and challenges, as well as designing a software project capable of being the basis of new developments in the field of ITS systems are the aim of this study. The outline of a method based on intelligent algorithms and improved YOLOv3 can have a major impact on the effort to reduce the negative impact created by chaotic traffic and the outline of safety protocols in the field of transport. The reduction of waiting times and decongestion by up to 80% is a valid aspect, which we can deduce from the study carried out.

In practice, technological innovation has increasingly become an important means for enterprises to cope with global competition and obtain sustainable development. An increasing number of companies are relying on supply chain resources in the technology development process. Based on the framework of knowledge resource orchestration and the survey data of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers in China’s automotive industry, this study comprehensively analyzed the influencing factors of technological innovations in supply chain enterprises. The analysis of the research by the Bootstrapping method found that supply chain relationship quality (SCRQ) positively impacts corporate technological innovations, in which knowledge sharing and knowledge integration play a dual mediating role. The investigation of the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) revealed that individual elements do not constitute a necessary condition for high-tech innovations in supply chain firms. Mutual commitment among supply chain members plays a more pervasive role in generating high-tech innovations. The two results corroborate each other and further illustrate the vital role of the intersection of SCRQ and knowledge management for corporate technological innovations.

So, considering the progress in vehicle equipment over the years, additional technological innovations and applications should be proposed in the near future. Having that in mind, an analytical review of the progress of equipment in electromobility and autonomous driving is performed in this paper. The outcomes of this review comprise hints for additional complementary technological innovations, applications, and operating constraints along with proposals for materials, suggestions and tips for the future. The aforementioned hints and tips aim to help in securing proper operation of each vehicle part and charging equipment in the future, and make driving safer in the future. Finally, this review paper concludes with a discussion and bibliographic references.

AbstractIncreasing the number of vehicles on the road network and the growing popularity of sustainable development of urban areas have resulted in the need for implementing efficient and cost-effective traffic measurement methods. From the perspective of traffic management, up-to-date information about vehicle density and access to historical data are the key components of traffic variability analyses. Rapid technological development based on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) has popularised the wireless sensor networks (WSN) application. The solution enables continuous monitoring of selected area using multiple wireless and low-cost sensors connected within a network. Those systems are dynamically evolving tools for solving an effective traffic management issues in city centres and urban environments. In the study, authors have performed a traffic variability and its dynamics analysis in a selected area using a multi-sensor network for traffic volume monitoring. The article presents the results of research conducted between years 2015 - 2018 throughout the city of Bielsko-Biala with the support of OnDynamic multimodal system. Within the context of the analyses, basic traffic parameters have been determined and variability trends have been identified on selected road sections. Long-term research indicated the minor variation in a number of vehicle detections and relatively stable traffic volume in the city centre during the analysis period.

This paper examines three channels of influence of the business cycle in the propensity of firms to introduce technological innovations: Aggregate demand (firms initiate more innovation projects in expansion than in recession; risk (the probability that initiated projects fail is higher in contraction than in expansion); and obstacles to innovate (more firms perceive the obstacles to innovate as high in recessions than in expansions and the high obstacles implies lower propensity to initiate innovation projects). With Spanish CIS data we find evidence that the three channels contributed to the fall in the proportion of firms that introduce technological innovations during the Great Recession, compared with the proportion of innovators in the years of expansion. The research methodology consists on estimating a multiprobit model with the probability that firms introduce technological innovations, the probability that firms abandon ongoing innovation projects, and the probability that firms perceive the obstacles to innovate as high.

The article is devoted to the analysis of innovations in healthcare in Russia. The author assessed the concept of innovation with the object-process approach. It is noted that, unlike the economic sphere, where the research, development and implementation of innovations are liked to the law of profit, in the social sphere, such as health care, innovations are broader in their nature and bring economic effect, which can be either direct or indirect. The author considers sush types of innovations in the field of health care as: technical (medical-pharmaceutical), organizational-managing, processual (technological), economic, informational and technological innovations. As the study shows, there are systemic problems of innovation implementation in healthcare in Russia. The presence of these problems is connected with a whole complex of urgent fundamental structural disproportions in Russia, which require solid decisions. The author formulates the main tasks of the innovation policy of Russia in the field of health care at current stage of development. Among them are: to raise the level of infrastructure support, to increase the rates of material, technical, personnel and organizational and technological transformation of the health care system as innovation basis; optimize funding for innovation in health care; identify priority areas; in the contradiction between tradition and innovation; to develop a unified system of planning, monitoring and managing innovative projects in health care, which will help to significantly improve the efficiency of their implementation.

This paper investigates the transmission of pressure between the public, relevant government departments, and industrial firms through the use of formal environmental regulations. The data include formal environmental regulations issued from 2005 to 2019 in 179 cities in 27 provinces in China. The intermediary effect model and the threshold effect model are used to carry out research studies on the relationships between public-participated environmental regulations, formal environmental regulations, and industrial-technological innovations. Results indicate that: (1) Pressure is transmitted between the public, and relevant government sectors and industries. For instance, public-participated environmental regulations pressure relevant government departments to apply strong formal environmental regulations on industrial sectors. (2) Labor and capital have a positive moderating effect on the effect of formal environmental regulations on industrial-technological innovations. (3) Both public-participated and formal environmental regulations promote industrial-technological innovations. (4) There is a threshold effect in formal environmental regulations. For instance, when the intensity of public-participated environmental regulations is higher than 93, the role of formal environmental regulations in promoting industrial-technological innovation can be completely maximized.

In this study, we introduce a sensitivity analysis of modelled CO2 aviation emissions to changes in the model parameters, which is intended as a contribution to the understanding of the atmospheric composition stabilization issue. The two variable dynamic model incorporates the effects of the technological innovations on the emissions rate, the environmental feedback, and a non-linear control term on the passengers rate. The model parameters, estimated from different air traffic sources, are subject to considerable uncertainty. The stability analysis of Monte Carlo simulations revealed that, for certain values of the non-linear term parameter and depending on the type of flight, the passengers number at some equilibrium points exceeded its initial value, while the emissions level was below the initial corresponding one. The results of two global sensitivity analyses indicated that the influence of the non-linear term prevailed on the passengers number rate, followed distantly by the environmental feedback. For the emissions rate, the non-linear term contribution dominated, with the technological term influence placing second.

While technological change benefits the U.S. service sector and the economy as a whole, the creation, design and production of innovations may favor highly-skilled over less-skilled workers. If skill-biased technical change creates more job vacancies for skilled, relative to less-skilled workers, less-skilled workers are at greater risk of becoming structurally unemployed. An epidemiological model is developed that describes the pathways to, and prevention of, structural unemployment (SU) of less-skilled workers. Less-skilled workers must protect themselves from being “infected” by the diffusion of skill-biased technical change in the service sector. They must choose to become “vaccinated” with “injections” of human capital to reduce the probability of contracting the “disease” of (SU) and to avoid permanently working in de-skilled jobs. By making less-skilled workers more productive, one can simultaneously improve the distribution of education and training, health and income inequality while providing the government more tax revenue.

Innovation is an important driver of economic progress, benefiting consumers, business and the economy as whole. However, innovation companies face high risks because innovation requires a lot of resources, and it is difficult to predict a payback period in advance. This is common for all types of innovation, but especially to technological innovation. One of the least researched technological innovations is telematics, innovative transport monitoring and control technology solutions. Those are widely applied in logistics, car-sharing platforms and the public transport sector. These innovations help to achieve the goals of the companies that buy and install them, but question what impact they have on the competitiveness of the companies that create these innovations remains a matter of debate. To fill this gap, the purpose of this article is to determine the impact of technological innovation on the competitiveness of telematics companies. In pursuit of this goal, the concepts of technological innovation and competitiveness are revealed. The definition of telematics innovation and its significance for the competitiveness of enterprises was also formed. The empirical part discusses the telematics market, provides the analysis of the main competitiveness indicators of 8 telematics companies and their changes, as well as the analysis of the research and development (R&D) costs and the impact of innovations on competitiveness. Applied research methods: a critical analysis of scientific literature, generalization, systematization of data, computation, and comparison of relative indicator, data dispersion indicator, and dynamics indicator, correlation, and regression analysis. The research reveals that creation and development innovation are related to competitiveness of telematics companies. However, excessive investment into innovation no longer generates positive return.

Abstract: The use of 1H-1,2,3-triazoles has become an important scaffold for applications in different technological sectors. Therefore, we sought to carry out technological monitoring to understand the international scenario involving 1H-1,2,3-triazoles from the patents filed, in addition to evaluating the relationship between the growth in the number of patents and the improvement of strategies for obtaining these compounds via a metal-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. Technological monitoring was performed with the support of the PatentInspiration ® platform, using the keywords "1,2,3-triazol", "1,2,3-triazole", and "1,2,3- triazolyl". A total of 960 registered patents were found, most for the years 2014 and 2019. The main filers were prestigious multinational companies, such as Syngenta, Merck, Sandoz, Pfizer, and Bayer. The United States, China, Japan, and Germany lead patent registrations, mainly addressing innovations in chemistry and metallurgy, human needs, and new technologies. These results help to understand the state of innovation for this topic, pointing out the characteristics of the main discoveries concerning 1H-1,2,3-triazole derivatives.

The paper investigates the case of a Brazilian enterprise that, after introducing sustainable innovation for the biological control of pests in soybean and sugarcane crops, has been recognized as one of the world’s most innovative companies. Therefore, it attempts to demystify the belief that sustainability is contrary to competitiveness; therefore, the objective was to verify the relationship between sustainable innovation and competitiveness based on a case study. The data were collected with interviews and bibliographical and documental research. It was observed that environmental, economic and social benefits attained with the main innovations developed by the enterprise as compared to traditional methods (chemical pesticides) in pest control are linked strategically to its competitiveness. Cooperation between the industry and universities reinforces the development of sustainable innovations in addition to increasing business competitiveness.

Commercial vehicle monitoring facilities provide the highway community with the means of supervising truck traffic. The technological advancements of the last few decades have allowed the realization of electronic clearances and can provide more effective ways to monitor and inspect truck traffic. However, in an era with limited funds and space for roadway expansion, some consideration must be given to what types of facilities are needed and what is the most efficient way to spend the available funds. Hence, a research effort was conducted to determine successful practices for designing a new facility or retrofitting or upgrading an existing one. The issues that need to be considered and addressed when designing or upgrading a commercial vehicle facility are discussed, and a checklist of critical factors, considerations for facility components, and typical facility layouts are provided. The findings indicate that a systems approach should be undertaken, all agencies affected by the operation of these facilities should be consulted and included in all phases of the project, and the development of a vision of the commercial vehicle operations goals is essential.

IntroductionInappropriate prescribing of antibiotics is a significant driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which is a global health challenge. Technological innovations present an opportunity to reduce demand for antimicrobials through infection prevention, detection, and management. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Innovation Observatory (IO) has developed horizon scanning methods to identify promising innovations (devices/diagnostics/digital) and anticipate technological trends. Together these insights build a comprehensive landscape and presents a significant opportunity for decision-makers and HTAs to consider the clinical, financial, infrastructural, and logistical provisions to improve preparedness for the potential adoption of these future innovations.MethodsThe IO developed a detailed dataset of technologies by formulating search strategies for AMR, based on a comprehensive list of terms and input from expert panels. Primary and secondary sources were systematically scanned using a combination of traditional scanning methods, automated and novel artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning techniques. Sources included clinical trial registries, MedTech news, academic sources, funding agencies, commercial sites, and regulatory authorities.ResultsOur global dataset identified over 3000 innovative preventative, detection, and monitoring technologies mapped across AMR clinical pathways (including sepsis, respiratory tract infections). Development activity largely concentrated in the United States of America and United Kingdom. Emerging trends included the application of novel materials to prevent infections (e.g., catheter coatings) and novel analytical techniques (e.g., biosensors, microfluidics, breath analysis) to support optimal patient treatment. Data analysis revealed a high proportion of technologies were diagnostic innovations addressing unmet needs such as rapid and accurate detection (including drug-resistant infections).ConclusionsThe rapid development and application of technological interventions presents an opportunity to strengthen national AMR strategies worldwide, through the adoption of new innovations. Improvements in exiting technologies, along with technological advancements have the potential to support appropriate prescribing of antimicrobials and thus address the rise in AMR.

Local energy initiatives are of growing interest to studies of grassroots innovation for sustainability. Some of these initiatives have developed novel technological solutions to fulfil local demand for renewable energy. However, whereas the upscaling and diffusion of grassroots innovations has been extensively discussed in the literature, their emergence has received very little attention so far. We will therefore focus on how energy initiatives can develop technological innovations by bringing together local actors and creating a fit to local circumstances. Grounded in actor network theory (ANT) and structured by concepts from Callon’s sociology of translation, we studied two technologically innovative projects of a Dutch energy initiative. Through document analysis and interviews, we researched how these initiatives developed their innovations by forming networks of social, material, and discursive elements. We found that the outcomes of the innovation processes are very dependent on the networking capacities of the energy initiatives, as well as how well they fit with external circumstances and opportunities. The paper concludes with five lessons for grassroots technological innovation: form links with the local, extensively scrutinize plans, create tangible proof of alignments, position the project as beneficial to as many actors as possible, and adjust the level of ambition to the strength of the actor network.

Food is essential to our survival, yet the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that about 820 million people were undernourished in 2018. In this context, food waste generation is a particularly salient issue. Wasting food means missing opportunities to feed the growing world population and consuming scarce resources, such as land, water and energy used in the production, processing, distribution and consumption of food. Firms in HORECA (hospitality, restaurant and catering) represent a considerable share of total food waste and, more importantly, are characterized by an overall low sense of awareness about the sustainability-oriented innovation opportunities and challenges of minimizing food waste. This article draws on an in-depth case study to explore the use of technological advancements in downstream value chain. This case study draws on a tech startup providing services for HORECA companies to address a new way for companies to solve the food waste challenge. Adopting technological innovations to quantify and minimize wastage via collaborations with third-party companies can be a strategic and cost-effective way to supplement a company’s open innovation activities.

Advances in digital technology have inaugurated a ‘fourth industrial revolution’, enabling, inter alia, the growth of ‘offsite’ housing construction in advanced economies. This productive transformation seems to be opening up new opportunities for styles of living, ownership, place-making and manufacturing that are more sustainable, democratic and bespoke. However, the full potential of this transformation is not yet clear nor how it will interact with—in the UK context—ongoing crises in housing provision rooted in an increasingly financialised and critically unbalanced national economy, timid state housing policies and a longstanding cultural preoccupation with mortgaged ‘bricks and mortar’ housing. In this paper, we report on an ongoing mixed method project interrogating the technological, environmental and social implications of the emergence of offsite housing construction in the UK. To a degree, we situate this interrogation in the Northern English region of Yorkshire, an emerging focal point of the growing offsite construction industry in the UK but an area afflicted by entrenched, post-industrial economic imbalances. The results show that offsite house engineers, designers and builders are innovatively embracing digital methods, a low carbon agenda and new approaches to place-making but that they have had little role, so far, in resolving the deeper structural problems affecting housing production in the UK, bringing the sustainability of their innovation into question.

Abstract. PRODES and DETER project together turned 33 years-old with an undeniably contribution to the state-of-art in mapping and monitoring tropical deforestation in Brazil. Monitoring systems all over the world have taken advantage of big data repositories of remote sensing data as they are becoming freely available together with artificial intelligence. Thus, considering the advent of new generation remote sensing data hubs, online platforms of big data that can fill in spatial and temporal resolutions gaps in current deforestation mapping, this work aims to present recent innovations at INPE´s deforestation monitoring systems in Brazil and how they are gauging new realms of technological levels. Recent innovations at INPE´s monitoring systems are: 1) the development of TerraBrasilis platform of data access and analysis; 2) the adoption of new sensors and cloud detection strategies; 3) the complementary use of multi-sensor images; 4) the complementary adoption of SAR C-band images using cloud data to sample and process Sentinel-1. Future innovations are: 1) development of a Brazilian data cube to be used in deep learning techniques of image classification; 2) Routine uncertainty analysis of PRODES data. Automatization might fasten mapping process, but the real challenge is to succeed in automatization maintaining data quality and historical series. The hyper-availability of remote sensing data, the initiative of a Brazilian Data Cube and promising machine learning techniques applied to land cover change detection, allowed INPE to reinforce its central role in tropical forest monitoring.

The advancements in sensor technology and ubiquity of connected devices has enabled the generation of large volume of disparate, dynamic and geographically distributed data both by scientific communities and citizens. With astonishing technological innovations and convergence, there have been major changes in peoples daily activities and social interactions. These innovations have contributed to the establishment of smart and connected cities. A smart city is forward-looking, progressive, and has the potential to provide high-quality life. A resilient city can preserve its activities and bounce back to its previous stage or to a new normal in the face of an emergency while meeting the daily activities and needs of its citizens. It is imperative to improve our understanding of Resilient and Intelligent Cities in order to leverage these new technologies to tackle the challenges ranging from climate change, public health, traffic congestion, economic growth, to digital divide, social equity, political movements, and cultural conflicts, among others.

This study investigates 30 provinces in China between 2003 and 2014. Kernel density method is used to analyse the dynamic evolution of haze pollution and technological innovation research and development (R&D), while spatial econometric analysis is used to study the impact of technological innovation on the haze pollution. The results show that haze pollution presents global spatial autocorrelation and local spatial cluster in China. China’s haze pollution has a significant spatial dependence and spatial spillover. A disproportion distribution pattern of haze pollution exists among provinces in China: the central region is the most polluted area followed by the western region, the northeast region and the eastern region. The kernel density curve shows that the gap between technology innovations R&D among provinces has expanded year by year. There is a polarization between the technological innovations R&D. Dynamic evolution results showed that during 2003–2012, the kernel density distribution curve of haze pollution showed a leftward shift, indicating that provincial haze pollution decreased gradually. However, the kernel density distribution curve of haze pollution showed a rightward shift in 2014, and the provincial haze pollution increased. During 2003–2012, the gap of haze pollution among different provinces in China gradually narrowed, while in 2014, the gap increased significantly. Spatial econometric results show that the indirect effects and the total effects of technological innovation are significantly negative. Technological innovation can not only reduce the regional haze pollution but also indirectly lead to the decline in the haze pollution of adjacent provinces through the knowledge spillover effect. The increase of population density can effectively reduce the haze pollution. There is an inverted ‘U type’ relationship between economic development and haze pollution. The increase of traffic pressure will aggravate the degree of haze pollution.

This information is not collected to current statistical accounting system. This article examines matters relating to the application of information technology to obtain the inter–district transport correspondences and data about the needs of passengers to travel on existing routes. The article provides an analysis of the methods of reducing the volume of correspondences of transport surveys on the routes. Purpose of the article - Using these methods allows you to reduce the costs of monitoring information about passenger traffic.

This study aimed to find out the challenges of online learning experienced by schools during the pandemic and explore information from the innovations it has carried out in science learning for students at Muhammadiyah junior high school 7 Cerme, Indonesia. Data collection in this study was carried out using interviews, observations, and documentation to identify challenges and innovations in online learning. The data obtained are challenges and innovations during online learning. These challenges include lack of teacher resources, difficulty monitoring teachers in the implementation of learning, difficulties in monitoring students in learning activities, low IT skills, more time in preparing for learning, lack of student motivation to learn, not having devices, and constrained by internet networks, and students lazy to study. The innovations are improving science and technology in learning and monitoring teacher learning through online journals and learning applications. Next, independent home visits of students, conducting training on the use of IT, using online learning media that are mastered by teachers and understood by students, preparing learning materials properly, and independently providing materials and assignments to students. The results of the reflection show that the implementation of online learning is still carried out even though it has limitations that lead to the emergence of several challenges from both teachers and students. Involvement between teachers and students needs to be maximized by improving teacher skills and student learning habits, which are the demands of the current technological era. So limited face-to-face learning is carried out, which combines face-to-face learning in class with online learning to reduce current challenges.

ABSTRACT Technological advancements are growing which make the government have to issue policies, due to the large number of road users who create congestion at every intersection in Sidoarjo, the implementation of the Area Traffic Control System (ATCS) program to optimize the implementation of traffic management control systems, in order to create control over traffic violators. traffic and minimize congestion at crossroads. This study aims to determine and analyze resources as for the following indicators; the human resources of the existing officers do their duties and functions well, the budgetary resources are adjusted to local revenues, the equipment resources provide the maximum possible service if there is damage it will be immediately repaired, the authority resources are related to the traffic transportation sector on the road, such as development, development, monitoring, control, and evaluation of communication systems.
