AbstractAfter the 2012 Republican New Hampshire primary, 159 poll results were released prior to the subsequent nomination contests in the Republican presidential primary. More than two-thirds of these polls relied on interactive voice response (IVR) software to conduct the interviews. We evaluate the ability of polls to predict the vote-share for the Republican candidates Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich. We find no overall difference in the average accuracy of IVR and traditional human polls, but IVR polls conducted prior to human polls are significantly poorer predictors of election outcomes than traditional human polls even after controlling for characteristics of the states, polls, and electoral environment. These findings provide suggestive, but not conclusive, evidence that pollsters may take cues from one another given the stakes involved. If so, reported polls should not be assumed to be independent of one another and so-called poll-of-polls will be misleadingly precise.

Анотація:

Though in the present age the Internet is an important resource for gathering information, there are also plenty of significant and helpful traditional sources. The best data collection strategy in information broker activity is one that employs techniques from both. The first part of the text is focused on the methodology of obtaining information. The author points out the place of information broker in the information process. One of the key aspects of the following analysis is an attempt to indicate the main definitions and classifications of the traditional sources of information in a field of historical knowledge as well as in the information science. The second part of the article considers information broker professional qualifications, since for him is important to know how to search, gather and integrate information from institution such as the national and private archives, libraries or museums.

Little time and few funds are currently spent on their improvement, so they are constantly being eroded in number and their relative breeding value has declined. The elaboration of methods for the utilisation of European sources could be of great assistance in achieving improvements in maize yield potential and crop safety on a global scale. Flavonoids are a category of plant-derived compounds which exhibit a large number of health-related effects. One of the most well-known and studied flavonoids is kaempferol, which can be found in a wide variety of herbs and plant families. Apart from their anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, kaempferol and its associated compounds also exhibit antibacterial, antifungal, and antiprotozoal activities. The development of drugs and treatment schemes based on these compounds is becoming increasingly important in the face of emerging resistance of numerous pathogens as well as complex molecular interactions between various drug therapies. In addition, many of the kaempferol-containing plants are used in traditional systems all over the world for centuries to treat numerous conditions. Due to its variety of sources and associated compounds, some molecular mechanisms of kaempferol antimicrobial activity are well known while others are still under analysis. This paper thoroughly documents the vegetal and food sources of kaempferol as well as the most recent and significant studies regarding its antimicrobial applications.

Herbs are the nature’s gift to human being to make disease free well life. The diverse tradition of India is a prosperous source of traditional medicines, many of which are of plant origin. Herbal medicines refers to the use of any plant’s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark or flowers for medicinal purpose. There are different sources of drug. Broadly speaking, there are two sources of drug namely synthetic and natural. Many drugs used in medicine today are developed by chemical synthesis. A recognized number of drugs are obtained from natural sources. The most important natural sources of drugs are (1) higher plants, (2) microbes, (3) animals and (4) marine organisms. Fluorescence microscopy techniques are now prevalent throughout the life sciences and many of the physical sciences. These techniques are often dependent on white light sources that have evolved from the more traditional mercury arc lamp to metal halide sources to the more recent light emitting diodes (LEDs). The newer light sources show more uniform power across the visible light spectrum, allowing for the use of fluorophores and fluorescent proteins outside of the peak wavelengths associated with the more traditional light sources.

Анотація:

The collection of the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch is based on Tibet and Mongolian books accumulated by generations of Buryat scholars, local historians, museum workers. In accordance with the RF Government Regulations of December 23, 2016 № 2800-r, RAS SB Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies is an academic organization to deposit of the RF Archival Fund documents that constitute the national property. To preserve and to study this rich heritage, the Institute’s Center for Oriental Manuscripts and Xylography was established. The author describes in detail the specialized database comprising bibliographic records of medical literature in the Center’s Tibetan collection. Based on the revealed information objects, authority records (metadata) of the following types were created: «person», «work», and «location». The rare publications were processed in accordance with the description scheme introduced by the international consortium Asian Classics Input Project (ACIP). The database gives insight into the content and genre diversity of the Tibetan medical literature corpus оn the whole, and may be used for developing offline and online apps for research and education; it can also make the core of e-libraries and knowledge bases.

This study surveyed politically-interested Web users online to examine whether they view Web publications as credible as their traditionally- delivered counterparts. Credibility is crucial for the Internet because past studies suggest people are less likely to pay attention to media they do not perceive as credible. This study found online media tended to be judged more credible than their traditional versions. However, both online and traditional media were only judged as somewhat credible.

To mitigate the problems associated with climate change, the low-carbon economy concept is now being championed around the world in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure sustainable economic growth. Therefore, to reduce the dependence on traditional energy sources, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has been actively promoting the use of renewable energy. Past research has tended to neglect the influence of other pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and have mainly been based on static analyses. To make up for these research gaps, this study examined OECD country data from 2010–2014, with labor, fixed assets, new energy, and traditional energy as the inputs, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), carbon dioxide (CO2), and PM2.5 as the outputs, from which it was found: (1) the overall efficiency of the individual countries varied significantly, with nine countries being found to have efficiencies of 1 for all five years, but many others having efficiencies below 0.2; (2) in countries where there was a need for improvements in traditional energy (which here refers to coal, petroleum and other fossil energy sources), there was also a significant need for improvement in new energy sources (which here refers to clean energy which will produce pollutant emissions and can be directly used for production and life, including resources like nuclear energy and “renewable energy”); (3) countries with poor traditional energy and new energy efficiencies also had poor CO2 and PM2.5 efficiencies; (4) many OECD countries have made progress towards sustainable new energy developments

Анотація:

The folklore of each nation is an indicator of national culture, its national identity, historical memory and worldview. Adapting to the environment, the people form their unique material and spiritual culture in accordance with the way of life. The Kazakh people, like other peoples, tried to interpret and convey the events of everyday life in various ways. Although folklore is an art created by the people, based on human wisdom, but it also acts as a true historical source. In folklore there are descriptions of historical events, pictures of everyday life and economic activity are reflected. Thus, the data of oral folk art are narrative sources among other types of sources. In accordance with the above facts, the author aims to consider traditional hunting on the examples of Kazakh folklore. In particular, on the basis of fairy tales, heroic and lyrical songs, ritual folklore and didactic folklore, the scenes of traditional hunting and the place of hunting in society are studied. An attempt was made through Kazakh folklore to show the national character and originality of traditional hunting, and the relationship between oral literature and ethnography was also revealed.

Анотація:

Traditional Cultural Expressions have basically been protected through national law, but in their regulation traditional food is not included as part of Traditional Cultural Expressions even though traditional food is one of Indonesia's traditional cultures that also characterizes the Indonesian Nation. For this reason, it is important to study the norms that occur in this study. The purpose of this study is to analyze the traditional food protection arrangements as traditional cultural expressions and the legal consequences that will occur if a traditional food is not listed as part of traditional cultural expressions. The method in this study uses a type of normative juridical legal research with a statute approach that focuses on the study of statutory regulations regarding legal issues in this study. The sources of legal materials in this study consist of primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials. The results of this study indicate that traditional food regulation has not been regulated as Traditional Cultural Expressions in the law in force in Indonesia precisely in Law No. 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright. The absence of arrangements related to traditional food as Traditional Cultural Expressions results in foreign parties or other countries easily recognizing the tradition, so it is necessary to regulate traditional food as Traditional Cultural Expressions.

Анотація:

Aim: Bitumen is a natural substance effusing from rocks’ notches in some highland areas; it has been known as an effective remedy for treating some illnesses. Considering pain relieving properties of bitumen in traditional Persian medicine (TPM) sources, this study aims to review the viewpoints of TPM sages regarding bitumen in the context of traditional Persian medicine. It also provides applicable information for interested researchers to conduct well-designed clinical trials and evaluate therapeutic effects of bitumen claimed in TPM sources. Material and method: Various databases including Embase, SID, IRANDOC, IranMedex, Scopus and PubMed were searched with keywords “bitumen” and “Shilajit”. Furthermore, main traditional Persian medicine sources including Avicenna’s “Canon of medicine”, “Continens Liber” by Razes, “The storehouse of medicaments” by Aghili, “Gift for the faithful” by Momen Tonekaboni and “Measure for medicine” written by Muhammad Akbar Shah Arzani were reviewed with Persian keywords “Moomiaii” and “Mumnaei” Results: According to TPM sources, bitumen was used by Iranian’s physicians to treat a wide range of diseases. It was known especially as an effective remedy to improve gastrointestinal digestive problems. Conclusion: Bitumen is cited in traditional Persian medicine sources as an effective remedy for treatment of a wide range of diseases, especially GI disorders and bone pain. Recent studies showed the beneficial effects of bitumen in treatment of wound healing, however using it in medical practice for other health dilemma should be confirmed by conducting well-designed clinical studies in the future.

The article deals with the problems of developing traditional energy sources and green power sources in the context of a global transition based on reducing greenhouse gas emissions that negatively affect the planet's climate. Goals/Objectives. The purpose of the study is to identify factors that determine trends in greenhouse gas emissions, identify directions for adapting both traditional and environmentally friendly energy sources to climate change. Methodology. The study of the problem posed was carried out on the basis of using such methods as comparative and statistical analysis, synthesis, economic analysis, including ecological and economic, comparison and grouping method, as well as information modeling. Results. The use of traditional energy sources increases the local and global environmental problems of modern society, while green energy allows you to mitigate or neutralize the negative impact on the environment. A number of developed countries, and primarily European ones, will receive significant benefits by reducing hydrocarbon imports and shifting their economies to a low-carbon path, as well as increasing their energy security. At the same time, for countries that have enough fossil fuels, a radical transition from traditional to renewable and other green energy sources is possible only with the use of significant administrative and financial resources, and creates serious risks for sustainable long-term socio-economic development. Conclusions/Significance. Moving towards global carbon neutrality will be an integral solution to the climate crisis and could bring significant benefits to both developed and developing countries. However, immediate and large-scale action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors of the economy, using initiatives and tools, both at the international and national levels.

Research was designed to evaluate the credibility perception of youth regarding different mainstream and new media sources of political news. This study adopted questionnaire survey method as a research design of the study. The sample was drawn using probability proportional to size (PPS) and random sampling techniques. For the purpose of investigation, 375 respondents from Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan’s approved universities/degree awarding institutions (DAIs) were selected for the purpose of data collection. The findings of the study revealed that in case the respondents are encountered with the conflicting version of political news stories, they considered traditional TV news channels and newspapers as first and second most credible political news sources respectively. Additionally, it was also found that the majority of the youth perceived live streaming of traditional TV news channels and news websites that are associated with the mainstream news sources (traditional TV news channels and newspapers) as first and second most credible online sources of political news respectively. Additionally, this research also found that the majority of the respondents considered non-governmental sources of political news as most credible. Overall, the study concluded that the respondents still perceived traditionally delivered political news as highly credible sources of political news. Traditional Russian worldviews explained healing from water sources in terms both Protestants and Catholics would have used elsewhere in Europe: as the grace of God or as the intervention of saints through associated relics or wonder-working icons. Holy wells were freely venerated within parishes until the eighteenth century when Peter the Great and the Holy Synod (the Russian Orthodox Church’s highest governing body) forbade pilgrimage to holy wells in a reformist drive to eradicate religious “superstitions.” This essay employs primary sources to consider how nineteenth-century developments at Russian holy wells and mineral springs related to social class, economics and those eighteenth-century reforms that merged the church with government structures. While liturgical activities at holy wells and the designation of new holy wells was criminalized, mineral springs gained appeal for “scientific” cures and as resort enterprises for the upper classes

Traditional medicine practice has gained increased popularity over the years, however, documenting its knowledge and practice methods have been an uphill task mainly because of its secretive nature. There is little information on the perception of traditional medicine practitioners towards formal sources of information and the preservation of their knowledge and practice. The study sought to investigate the perceptions of traditional medicine practitioners towards formal information sources and their perceptions towards the storage of their medicinal knowledge in these formal sources in Delta State, Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study and the descriptive survey design was employed. A self-structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 82 traditional medicine practitioners in Delta State. The study found that the commonest form of traditional medicine practiced in the state is herbal. The practitioners rely mostly on oral information sources and their perception of formal sources of information is very low. In addition, the traditional medicine practitioners are not interested in having their knowledge of traditional medicine captured and stored in formal sources because they feel that their knowledge about traditional medicine is sacred and cannot be written down or recorded. Among others, the study recommended the need for an awareness campaign to be carried out by public and medical libraries in Delta State, to sensitise traditional medicine practitioners about information resources that are of relevance to them that are available in libraries.
