En los últimos años se ha evidenciado un incremento en el rubro inmobiliario en toda lima moderna, en consecuencia, la compra de departamentos es ahora una de las mayores preferencias de viviendas para el consumidor actual, quienes consideran al mantenimiento eléctrico uno de los de mayor prioridad, donde buscan calidad, horarios de atención y beneficios que no afecten su vida diaria. Ante ello hemos visto la oportunidad de abarcar este segmento de negocio.
Es aquí donde nace la propuesta de Electric Master, de ingresar al mercado ofreciendo servicios de Mantenimiento Eléctrico correctivo y preventivo. El modelo de negocio se dirige a hombres y mujeres de los segmentos A, B que se encuentran en Lima Moderna.
Al ser una empresa de servicios, el objetivo de Electric Master es brindar seguridad, calidad y atención las 24 horas del día cubriendo con ello la necesidad del cliente y generando la satisfacción del servicio prestado, contando para ello con certificaciones, técnicos y especialistas en el rubro eléctrico quienes aseguraran la efectividad de la atención.
La propuesta de negocio que se presenta necesitara de una inversión de S/55,480.00 Soles con un VAN de S/ 198,311 los cuales tendrán una TIR de 76.04 % demostrando con ello que el proyecto es rentable para los inversionistas.
Finalmente, Electric Master muestra una apuesta por la atención de servicios eléctricos que conoce y comprende las necesidades del cliente y que busca brindar un servicio eficiente efectivo y eficaz.In recent years, there has been an increase in the real estate sector in all modern Lima, consequently, the purchase of apartments is now one of the largest preferences for housings for the current consumer, who considers electrical maintenance one of the highest priority, where they look for, quality, hours of operation and benefits that don´t affect their daily lives. Given this situation, we have seen the need and opportunity to cover this business segment. It is here where the Electric Master proposal is born, to enter the market to offering corrective and preventive Electrical Maintenance services. The business model is directed at men and women from segments A, B who are live in Modern Lima. For being a service company, the objective of Electric Master is to provide security, quality and attention 24 hours a day, covering the customer's need and generating satisfaction with the service provided, counting on certifications, technicians and specialists in the electrical item who will ensure the effectiveness of care. The business proposal presented, will require an investment of S / 55,480.00 Soles, with a VPN of S/ 198,311 which will have an TIR of 76.04%, demonstrating that it is a profitable project for investors. Web page loading time is one of the critical challenges on the Internet. Thistopic attracts more researchers as it largely reflects the user satisfaction.A web page resources typically consists of Hyper Text Markup Language(HTML), Cascading Style-Sheet (CSS), JavaScript (JS), media files, etc.As the complexity of the web page increases, the size of files fetched fromserver also increases which causes delay in transmitting, loading, parsing andrendering the web page.The web page is not rendered until HTML, CSS and JS files are loadedand parsed. Not all such files are needed to be rendered for the first page.Optimizing and loading only critical les required for the first page, can considerablyreduce time taken to load the web page. After the first page isrendered, the rest of the files can be loaded and executed. In this thesis,we focus on improving the time taken for First Meaningful Paint(FMP) ofwebsite by loading the critical files initially. We used Design Science Research(DSR) methodology and created a PhantomJS application, to identifyand segregate used and unused CSS for the first meaningful paint of the webpage. We also analyzed script files to load only critical files required forFMP and the rest later. We evaluated our experiment by studying a case onAxis Communications AB and measured its website's performance to find ifour experiment reduced FMP time. It showed improvement in time takenfor FMP from 1284ms to 372.6ms. Based on the results, we suggest to webdevelopers to separate and load the files required for FMP and load the restof the files needed for the website later, so that the first page is renderedquickly.

El Robot Humanoide NAO, de Aldebaran Robotics, es un robot de aspecto humano desarrollado con fines académicos y de investigación, siendo utilizado en diferentes instituciones académicas en todo el mundo, incluyendo la Universidad de Tokio, el IIT Kanpur de la India y la Universidad del Rey Fahd de Petróleo y Minerales de Arabia Saudita.
El presente proyecto tuvo como meta dar a conocer, y validar, las capacidades técnicas que puedan ser explotadas a nivel académico dentro de universidades interesadas en la investigación sobre robótica, dado que el impacto de esta rama de conocimiento aún es leve dentro del entorno académico peruano.
Así mismo, con este proyecto se dará inicio a una nueva área de investigación dentro de las carreras de Ingeniería relacionada a Ciencias de la Computación, donde se integre el robot humanoide NAO con diferentes tecnologías modernas de alto impacto en la sociedad, como puede ser Emotiv EPOC.
Al final del desarrollo del proyecto se obtuvo una base sólida de conocimiento acerca de NAO y sus características más resaltantes. Para lograrlo se desarrolló una biblioteca en Python que permite controlar a NAO sin la necesidad de utilizar Choregraphe, la validación de esta biblioteca se hizo con el desarrollo de una aplicación que integró NAO con Emotiv EPOC, donde se utilizaron características como teleoperación, ejecución de rutinas de movimiento, control de la cámara y uso de Text-to-Speech y Speech-to-Text.
Durante el presente proyecto se contemplaron tres fases: Análisis de la tecnología a utilizar, en este caso, del desarrollo para el robot humanoide NAO; el desarrollo de la biblioteca; y la integración con Emotiv EPOC.NAO, from Aldebaran Robotics, is a humanoid robot developed with academic and research purposes being used in many academic institutions worldwide, including the University of Tokyo, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. This project had the goal to present, and validate, the technical capabilities that can be used in an academic level within universities interested in research on robotics, since the impact of this branch of knowledge is still mild in the Peruvian academic environment. Likewise, it was expected from this project to create a new research area within engineering careers related to computer science, where the NAO humanoid robot could be integrated with other modern technologies with high impact, as Emotiv EPOC. At the end of this project we obtained a solid base of knowledge about NAO and its most important capabilities. To achieve this, a Python library was developed, which allows control NAO robot without using Choregraphe IDE. To validate this library, an application was developed, which integrated NAO with Emotiv EPOC; this application used features as teleoperation, movement routines, camera control and usage of Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text. During this project three phases were contemplated: research of the technology, development of the integration with Emotiv EPOC, development of applications.

Me pareció prudente declarar la Intención de proyecto ya que en esta ocasión las variantes
que me llevaron a escoger y fijar directrices de proyecto fueron algo particulares.
Luego de haber estado trabajando 4 meses en el estudio de Massimiliano Fuksas
ubicado en Roma, Italia y posteriormente 7 meses en la oficina de arquitectura
metropolitana OMA en Rotterdam, Holanda mis percepciones, intereses y entendimientos
con respecto a la arquitectura han recibido una fuerte influencia por lo que al momento
de enfrentarme a la tarea de terminar la carrera con un proyecto de titulo, me pareció
interesante la posibilidad de recrear, plasmar y representar en el proyecto final, mi
experiencia a nivel profesional, en oficinas de carácter internacional las cuales han sido y
son referentes de arquitectura tanto en nuestra facultad como en el mundo entero.
Las directrices de proyecto se enmarcan dentro de lo que ha sido mi experiencia en las
ya dichas oficinas la cual ha estado directamente relacionada con el diseño, la proyección
y la investigación del urbanismo en proyectos de diseño de espacios arquitectónicos
urbanos en la tipología de proyectos llamados master plan para concursos internacionales
y proyectos en fase de desarrollo.
Es decir, este titulo tiene como directriz general conducente de proyecto el objetivo
de diseñar un master plan a nivel profesional, con sistemas y bases de búsqueda
experimentales, tal y como se haría en una oficina de carácter internacional como es OMA.
Esto tanto en términos conceptuales como de experimentación y aproximación al proyecto.
De esta manera, no solamente contribuir con la diversidad en lo que a proyectos de
titulo respecta, en una universidad pluralista como la nuestra donde existen muchas más
de una vertiente de diseño de arquitectura, sino que además es una manera de representar
lo que a mi modo de ver es el tema de la arquitectura en estos momentos. La arquitectura
como soporte de las dinámicas humanas, posicionada donde convergen los flujos de las
actividades humanas y como esta puede catalizar efectos en su entorno.
Además me interesaría plantear mi desacuerdo con el hecho que la facultad de
arquitectura no reconozca el master plan como una tipología de proyecto de arquitectura,
siendo esta una especialidad de la profesión reconocida internacionalmente habiendo
arquitectos especializados y dedicados a este tipo de proyectos en innumerables oficinas
del mundo, además de existir diversos posgrados de especialización del mismo. El mismo
caso sucede con la arquitectura del paisaje.

Gjennom denne oppgaven vil leseren gjøres kjent med Ormen Lange landanlegg for produksjon av gass. I oppgaven presenteres bakgrunnsinformasjon for alle store hovedsystemer som inngår i forbindelse med oppstart av gassforedlingsprosessen. For at oppgaven skulle være gjennomførbar har en måtte begrense oppgaven til å kun omhandle sekvenser i hydrokarbonduggpunktssystemet. Kort oppsummert kan en si at oppgaven bygger på følgende problemstillinger:1. Kan en redusere tiden det tar å starte opp gassanlegget etter en produksjonsstans?2. Er det mulig å forenkle operatørens oppgaver i forbindelse med oppstart av anlegget?'Å finne svar på disse spørsmålene har skapt mye hodebry og utfordringer, men slik resultatet kan presenteres i dag vil kunnskapen kanskje kunne bidra til ny forståelse og innovative løsninger for fremtiden. I de eksisterende sekvensene som er laget for Ormen Lange, må en starte en produksjonslinje om gangen. Dette innebærer å starte resirkulasjon av gass for å få gassen innenfor salgsspesifikasjonene, samt å legge over til eksport når gassen oppnår disse spesifikasjonene. Når den første produksjonslinjen er lagt til eksport, vil en kunne starte neste produksjonslinje.I denne oppgaven skisseres en løsning som gjør det mulig å starte begge produksjonslinjer parallelt. Denne løsningen vil, med de antagelser gjort i oppgaven, kunne bidra til å redusere oppstartstiden med inntil 1 time. Dette oppnår en ved å synkronisere oppstarten til begge produksjonslinjer, samt at en fordeler gassgjennomstrømningen mellom linjene. Beregninger gjort av Aker Kværner viser at en i resirkulasjonslinjen kan ha en gassrate på 20MSm3/sd. Dette gjør det mulig å starte begge produksjonslinjer samtidig ved hjelp av Joule Thompson (JT), men ikke med Turbo Ekspander (TEX).Men en ønsket ikke bare å redusere oppstartstiden, det er også ønskelig å forenkle operatørens oppgaver. I første del av oppgaven gjennomføres design og implementasjon av sekvenser, med hovedfokus på å redusere oppstartstiden. For å rette fokus mot operatøren har det blitt gjennomført analyser av disse nye sekvensene. Dette er gjort for å kunne konkretisere hvilke tiltak som kan iverksettes for å bidra til å forenkle operatørens oppgaver.Løsningen som er valgt i oppgaven går ut på å samle alle operatørens oppgaver i første steg av sekvensene. Dette gjøres for at sekvensene ikke skal bli hengende og vente på operatørens bekreftelser eller aksjoner etter at sekvensene er startet. Ved at operatøren utfører alle aksjoner og bekreftelser i første steg, oppnår en at de øvrige stegene i sekvensene blir automatisert. Dette har vist seg svært nyttig, når en ønsker å benytte en hovedsekvens for å automatisk starte andre sekvenser. Da kan en legge alle operatørens oppgaver inn i hovedsekvensen, slik at sekvensene som kjøres fra hovedsekvensen ikke krever operatørens inngripen etter at de er startet.I den siste delen av oppgaven rettes fokus på kommunikasjonen mellom menneske og maskin. Det ble gjennomført en heuristisk evaluering av brukergrensesnittet og resultatet viser noen områder med forbedrings potensiale. Her kan det nevnes to hovedpunkter: tekstlige beskrivelser og operatørvarsling når sekvensene avventer operatørens inngripen. Oppgaven presenterer forslag til løsninger for begge disse problemene.

This report is the culmination of a six year process during which emerged the need to establish a meeting or indaba place for the collaborative 'People and Parks' partnership of the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service (NCS) in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park (HUP) and stake-holder communities adjacent to the Park. Comprising two parts which compliment each other, the report has been developed to inform, guide and advise the NCS in the planning and development of an education centre in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park. Part I documents the processes of engagement and interaction between the NCS in HUP and neighbouring communities during this period, which led to the need for an education centre, whilst placing and contextualizing the process within historical, socio-political and organisational processes. This is taken further with a description of the research process and an analytical narrative of four key programmes. Part I concludes with a summary of the outcomes of the planning process which shows how through local community input and partiCipation, and through networking with other EE practitioners, a conceptual development plan for the Mambeni Education Centre emerged. The second part of this report (Part 2) is the conceptual development plan which has emerged out of the processes described in Part 1. This plan constitutes practical guidelines for the NCS on how to develop and manage the Mambeni Education Centre. More specifically the plan provides ideas about: what type of centre it should be and where it should be located; who the stake-holders are, their educational neees and ideas for possible programmes; the physical and logistical requirements; managemynt and staffing structures and a detailed business plan. The report intends to draw the reader into understanding the complex social and environmental issues that the collaborative partnership of 'People and Parks' are engaging with, so that the Mambeni Environmental Education Centre can playa [more] meaningful and responsive role in contributing to processes of social transformation. In sharing this environmental education re(search) story which represents a unique approach to centre development, it is hoped that the notion of environmental education centres might be viewed by environmental educators through a different set of lenses. Through having the participants' views represented, I wish the report to reflect the richness of the research process.

The purpose of this project is to investigateif it is possible to build a home based braille printerfor a low cost using microcontrollers, and thereby making itmore accessible to people with visual impairment. In orderto achieve this, a prototype was built using an microcontrollertogether with stepper motors and a solenoid. Thesecomponents were then controlled by code through user inputand translated to required movements. Each switchcase then calls a set of functions that activates the steppersand the solenoid in the order needed to get the desiredcharacter. In the time frame given, the project resulted ina prototype able to print out the input it was given. Syftet med detta projekt är att undersöka om det är möjligt att bygga en hembaserad braille-skrivare till en låg kostnad med hjälp av mikrokontroller och därmed underlätta för personer med nedsatt syn. För att uppnå detta byggdes en prototyp med en mikrokontroll tillsammans med stegmotorer och en solenoid. För att styra dessa komponenter skrevs en kod som tar in information från vad som skrivits i Arduinos serial monitor och kopplar sedan detta till specifika switch cases. Varje switch case anropar sedan en uppsättning funktioner som aktiverar stegmotorerna och solenoiden i den ordning som behövs för att få önskad bokstav. Med den givna tidsramen resulterade projektet i en prototyp som kunde skriva ut det input den var given. Vad det gäller kostnaden för att bygga en Braille-skrivare på egen hand jämfört med att köpa en på marknaden beror mycket på vilka bearbetningsmaskiner som är tillgängliga.

In computer simulation the term \"multibody system\" is usually employed to describe a system of interconnected bodies. Several examples of multibody systems can be found in railway engineering. A wheelset interacting with a track through a contact interface is just one example of practical interest. Modelling mechanical systems in a virtual environment contributes to the understanding of subjects such as dynamic behaviour, stability, durability, wear, fatigue, etc. In the context of a rigid-flexible multibody system mathematically described by a weak-form, the purpose of the present work is to evaluate the contributions due to rigid bodies considering their contact interactions. Inertial contributions due to distribution of mass of a rigid body are fully developed, considering a general pole position associated with a single node, representing a rigid body element. Rodrigues rotation parameters are used to describe finite rotations, by an updated Lagrangian description. Then, the so-called master-surface to master-surface contact formulation is adapted to be used in conjunction with the rigid body element and flexible bodies, aiming to consider their interaction in a rigid-flexible multibody environment. New surface parameterizations are proposed to establish contact pairs, permitting pointwise interaction in a frictional scenario. The proposed formulation is used to represent mechanical systems from different contexts, including a numerical example of the wheel-rail contact interface. A formulação de contato master-surface to master-surface é adaptada para ser usada em conjunto com o elemento de corpo rígido e corpos flexíveis, estabelecendo a interação entre esses corpos em um ambiente de simulação multicorpos. Novas parametrizações de superfícies de contato são desenvolvidas para estabelecer os pares de contato, assumindo-se interações pontuais, em um cenário de contato com atrito. The present work examines the Chinese Masters Text the Liezi, purported to be composed in the 5th century BCE, though more likely achieving its current form in the 4th century CE. It situates the claims Liezi in the intellectual and spiritual climate of 4th century CE in its role as a member of the Masters Text category, and reads the text's ontological and normative program in light of the flourishing xuanxue and prajñāpāramitā discourse of that era. Chapter One traces the evolution of the Masters Text category from the Warring States period, through the Han dynasty, and into the early medieval period, relying on the understanding of “Masters Text” offered by Wiebke Denecke in her Dynamics of Masters Literature (2010). I argue that textual authority accrued by this category serves as a sufficient impetus to create such an inauthentic document in approximately 350 CE. Chapter Two reviews the most recent contributions to the debate over the authenticity of the Liezi, and concludes that the text is certainly a 4th century CE compilation, though containing some earlier material. Chapter Three is a concise survey of the ontological and normative position of the text, with a chapter by chapter analysis of the Liezi. Chapter Four uses this analysis of the Liezi to compare the thought therein with contemporary thinkers such as Wang Bi, Guo Xiang, Ruan Ji, and Xi Kang. I conclude that the Liezi was likely compiled in an effort to argue for the ontological scheme of Wang Bi against that of Guo Xiang, and that it does not explicitly follow Ruan Ji or Xi Kang in advocating for the pursuit or practice of longevity techniques. Chapter Five compares notions of “Nonbeing” and “emptiness” in the Liezi to Buddhist speculations on “emptiness” unfolding in China up to and during the 4th century CE. I conclude that despite frequent speculation on the part of modern and pre-modern commentators, there is little conceptual alignment between the Liezi and the developing Buddhist schools.Arts, Faculty of

Reflections and thoughts about time and materialization is my main theme in this essay. I start with introducing my background as a musician and how I moved from there into art. My search in wanting to build a bridge between these two art forms and discussing the differences between thenature of music and art. Since music is a time-based art- form I compare it with the nature of myworks being also time-based, but unlike music, dealing with space. How I moved into making art with impermanent materials such as food and the influence I have from John Cage and his philosophy of silence or nothingness and chance. I discuss Fluxus-art in order to connect my work to the fact that often it has leads into no-products and being event-based. The influence I have had from the artist Andy Goldsworthy which has led me even further into thoughts about the inherent nature of the material, dealing with the concept of time and nature. From Goldsworthy I move into discussions about the method of using intuition as a tool, and howthat has led me into creating works like my Bachelor graduation piece, allowing myself to take risks and not always be in control of the result. Between contradictions in material and thought, letting it go as it will, these are all facts about the art of Eva Hesse, who's works I discovered in Konstfack and how that was like finding my parent within art. The coating, surrounding and wrapping have repeatedly appeared in my art, I discuss this way of expression as a metaphor of different images of time, connecting to the Icelandic artist Sigurdur Gudmundsson and his lecture held in 1969 about time. The environment has become my platform in the masters project. There I have created both visual and aural works that are circling in one way or the other, around the subject of time and materialization. I ask myself, if I will be able to gather the result of that work in a space and create acertain balance between these different elements? I point out the fact that centuries ago music mixed with art in the church. From there I move into discussing a sound performance I made that had no visual contact and was made instantly in one hour. In the context of working instantly I discuss the chaotic order in Jessica Stockholder's works and how she allows chance and dreamlike ideas to exist in her installations. Finally I move into the part of my present work, where I am using sound. Shidō Munan (至道無難, 1602-1676) was an early Tokugawa Zen master mostly active in Edo. He was the teacher of Shōju Rōjin, who is in turn considered the main teacher of Hakuin Ekaku. He is best known for the phrase that one must“die while alive,”made famous by D.T. Suzuki. Other than this, his work has not been much analyzed, nor his thought placed into the context of the early Tokugawa period he inhabited. It is the aim of this work to analyze some of the major themes in his writings, the Jishōki (自性記), Sokushinki (即心記), Ryūtakuji ShozōHōgo (龍沢寺所蔵法語), and the Dōka (道歌). Special attention is paid to his views on Neo-Confucianism, Pure Land thought, and Shinto- traditions which can be shown through their prevalence in his writings to have placed Zen on the defensive during this time period. His teachings on death are also expanded on and analyzed, as well as some of the other common themes in his writing, such as his teachings on kōan practice and advice for monastics. In looking at these themes, it is possible to both compare and contrast him from some of his better-known contemporaries, such as Bankei and Suzuki Shōsan. Additionally, selected passages from his writings are offered in translation.

This Portfolio was submitted in 2005 to Rhodes University as a Research Portfolio presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in General Education Theory and Practice. The Portfolio consists of seven (7) key parts. The reader of this Portfolio is courteously informed that the structure of this portfolio is to some extent differ from the thesis structure. Thus, the reader should be attentive not to weigh against the two. Further more, I hereby declare that this portfolio is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of references indicated at the end of each part. Part 2 and 6 are the core parts of the portfolio. The focal point of part 2 is the contextual curriculum analysis of Grade 8-10 Oshindonga Curriculum in order to investigate its implementation in four educational circuits: Oshigambo, Onathinge, Onyaanya and Omuthiya in Oshikoto Region. Based on the findings of this analysis, lack of critical inquiry and reflective practice among Oshindonga teachers was identified as one of the major obstacles that preventing the effective implementation of the curriculum. Most of these teachers are Basic Education Teacher Diploma (BETD) postgraduates. Thus, part 3 and 4 were developed as supplements to inform the main research paper (part 6) which is related to teacher's professionalism in the classroom. The focus of part 3 (literature review) was on the teacher as a reflective practitioner. This is in line with the Namibian Education Policy, which identifies reflective practice as the heart of teacher professionalism. In this part, I explored a variety of views related to the notion of professionalism in teaching. I have also focused on views related to teacher's professional development both on macro and micro levels. These views provided a clarification and an underpinning framework on which to base my analysis of reflective practice as professionalism in education. Part 4 (education theories) focused on the digging of understanding of knowledge as an important theoretical domain of behaviourist and constructivist theories. I have tried to establish how the two theories (Behaviourist and Constructivist) view knowledge and its acquisition and to gain an understanding of how the two theories have been informing the practice. Subsequently, part 6 meant to investigate and assess the extent to which Basic Education Teacher Diploma postgraduate teachers are autonomously applying the theory of critical inquiry and reflective practice in the classroom. Both part 2 and 6 have findings. There is much correlation between the issues and problems in the implementation of the curriculum as identified in part 2 and the findings of the main research paper (part 6). Though critical inquiry and reflective practice is the key journey towards a high level of reflectivity and one of the significant characters of teacher professionalism in the classroom, most issues and problems identified were related to the insufficient practice of critical inquiry and reflective practices. Low correlation was found between critical inquiry and reflective practice theory and teachers' practices in the classroom. Despite to the fact that various rationales were mentioned as to why critical inquiry and reflective practice successful implementation is not taking place, the study positioned an emphasis on team working at school, cluster and circuit base that could contributed to a great extend to making teachers more competent and supporting themselves in mastering the applicable critical inquiry and reflective practice skills.

The Marchamalo salt flats, built in the 18th century, are located near Cabo de Palos, Murcia (Spain), in a hot spot area with constant pressures of tourism and urban speculation. The salt flats are currently abandoned, but its landscape and ecological value still subsist. This Thesis aims to develop a low impact lighting Master plan for Marchamalo salt flats in which a comprehensive analysis is relevant for the design project. A holistic analysis method is employed which considers three agents: “Space”, “Humans” and “Light” to which the factor “Flora & Fauna” was added since the original method was developed for an urban context while the salt flats are located in a natural protected area. Each agent is studied in depth, separately and the interrelations between them. Applying the interpretation of facts and data developed in the analysis and by means of alternative urban lighting solutions like phosphorescence, portable lamps and smart controls; a customised urban lighting design is proposed based on the salt flats identity, preservation of darkness, multi-sensorial experience of the realm and the reconnection with the sky and nature. The lighting proposal will also be the guiding thread to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the heritage in the Region of Murcia in general, taking as a particular example the case of Marchamalo salt flat.

The Cal Poly Pier is the marine field station for the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) CCMS and is one of several facilities that supports research and educational activities. The CCMS is a CSU Campus Center research organization that provides research and education activities as a part of Cal Poly’s overall mission while offering opportunities to interested parties beyond Cal Poly, such as private and public entities. The 3,057-foot long pier provides students, faculty, researchers, and other users unrivaled access to the marine environment of the Central Coast and fosters hands-on learning opportunities to progress marine research and science. The Master Plan name was changed to Facility Plan to streamline the plan approval process and to minimize the potential for errors.

In the first part of this thesis we concern ourselves with the problem of generating pseudo-random circuits. These are a series of quantum gates chosen at random, with the overall effect of implementing unitary operations with statistical properties close to that of unitaries drawn at random with respect to the Haar measure. Such circuits have a growing number of applications in quantum-information processing, but all known algorithms require an external input of classical randomness. We suggest a scheme to implement random circuits in a weighted graph state. The input state is entangled with the weighted graph state and a random circuit is implemented by performing local measurements in one fixed basis only. A central idea in the analysis of this proposal is the average bipartite entanglement generated by the repeated application of such circuits on a large number of randomly chosen input product states. For a truly random circuit, this should agree with that obtained by applying unitaries at random chosen uniformly with respect to the Haar measure, values which can be calculated using Pages Conjecture. Part II is largely concerned with continuous variables (CV) systems. In particular, we are interested in two descriptions. That of the class of Gaussian states, and that of systems which can be adequately described through the use of Markovian master equations. In the case of the latter, there are a number of approaches one may take in order to derive a suitable equation, all of which require some sort of approximation. These approximations can be made based on a mixture of mathematical and physical grounds. However, unfortunately it is not always clear how justified we are in making a particular choice, especially when the test system we wish to describe includes its own internal interactions. In an attempt to clarify this situation, we derive Markovian master equations for single and interacting harmonic systems under different scenarios, including strong internal coupling. By comparing the dynamics resulting from the corresponding master equations with numerical simulations of the global systems evolution, we assess the robustness of the assumptions usually made in the process of deriving the reduced Markovian dynamics. This serves to clarify the general properties of other open quantum system scenarios subject to treatment within a Markovian approximation. Finally, we extend the notions of the smooth min- and smooth max-entropies to the continuous variable setting. Specifically, we have provided expressions to evaluate these measures on arbitrary Gaussian states. These expressions rely only on the symplectic eigenvalues of the corresponding covariance matrix. As an application, we have considered their use as a suitable measure for detecting thermalisation.

This study seeks to show the process of development by which my writing of this series of short stories has responded to my relationship to a welcoming, albeit alien, culture; namely: a small mountain village in south west Bulgaria. It also explores my responses to living and working within that c.ulture, and the ways in which my studies of the folk culture, history and the impact of western culture on existing cultural beliefs and values have also affected both my writing and my own rather ambiguous cultural background (see introduction p. 1). The core of the thesis is a collection of eighteen short stories, written to be performed, and consequently written in storyteller's style. All of the stories, excluding the first and the eighteenth, were written during my two year stay in Bulgaria, and linked using the conceit of the fictional storyteller, Ivan levsky, and all were written in response either to historical events, cultural events or local incidents or characters. It also seeks to illustrate the way in which my work became increasingly reliant on the freedom that Magical Realism allows. It was this freedom that led me to write this collection in the style in which it is written, and led me to the final conclusion that I had no other option of saying what I wished to say in the way in which it was said; hence the rather ambiguous title: Magical Realism; Master or Servant? The literary background is explored through critical reflections in the final chapters. Where appropriate I have explained the genesis of each work and, where appropriate, the influences of the work of other writers upon my writing; in particular the works of Salman Rushdie and Angela Carter. I have also included short critical explorations of the major works of both of these writers. As the stories contain Bulgarian and Turkish words which may not be familiar to some readers I have also included a glossary. For the same reason I have included a brief historical time line relevant to each story.

Two of these collaborations in particular, The Old Man Study Group with Hamlett Dobbins (Memphis, TN) and The Coracle Drawing Club with David Dunlap (Iowa City, IA), have given me the license and opportunity to pretend to be someone else. These collaborative projects have asked me to consider, and at times adopt, even if only for a moment, the interests and concerns of another maker. A few months into these two projects, I noticed that the work I was making on my own, in the isolation of my own studio, was suddenly open to the world's innovations, and not just my own.

My research explores Alfred Hitchcock’s use of adaptation and the impact that this has on his status as an ‘auteur’. The aim, through looking at a cross section of his work, is to produce the basis for an adaptation model that could be used to examine his entire body of work, accounting for all influences, extratextual references, intertextualities, sequels, remakes and most importantly, other authors. By exploring Hitchcock’s use of the theatrical (a subject that is often ignored) and his lesser earlier films, we can begin to form the foundations for this model. By looking at his adaptation of a particular author and the textual evolution of one of his most iconic films, we are able to put this model to the test. Chapter one is the introduction, which looks at Hitchcock’s status within cinematic history, while also examining the current state of Hitchcock scholarship, auteur theory and adaptations studies. Chapter two examines the theatrical adaptations of Hitchcock’s British period, specifically shining light upon texts that are often ignored or maligned by theoretical study. Chapter three discusses the American theatrical adaptations, specifically looking at the role of the ‘meta-text’ and Hitchcock’s fascination with recreating the theatrical. Chapter four explores Hitchcock’s relationship with Daphne du Maurier, examining his adaptation of her work, overall themes, characters and ideologies. This chapter also presents an original reading of The Birds, which examines how Hitchcock’s film is more indebted to Du Maurier’s novels than her shot story of avian horror. Chapter five examines the evolution of Psycho. Hitchcock’s adaptation of, amongst others, Robert Bloch and Henri-Georges Clouzot will be discussed, as will the multiple sequels, remakes and exploitations that, in turn, adapt his own film. It will be argued that these texts are in fact adapting Psycho’s influences and origins as much as the film itself. Chapter six is the conclusion where the findings are analysed and the model of adaptation, which positions Hitchcock at the centre as a collector of texts is discussed. In occupying this position the notion of him as an ‘auteur’ is erased and instead he becomes the ‘Master of Adaptation’.

Theory of open quantum systems, which studies quantum systems interacting with their environments, has a wide variety of applications in physics, ranging from quantum optics and condensed matter physics to quantum informatics and quantum computation. One important feature of open quantum systems is quantum mechanical treatment for damping, which is usually described by Lindblad master equations derived using the Born–Markov approximation. However, because of their perturbative nature, such master equations can only model systems with weak system-environment coupling. For example, in superconducting quantum circuits the environmental coupling can be increased to values for which the master equations are no longer accurate. A more accurate equation of motion, the formally exact stochastic Liouville–von Neumann equation, can be obtained by using the path integral formalism of quantum mechanics.
We study a simple but important model where a two state system, qubit, is coupled to a quantum harmonic oscillator, which is further coupled to a harmonic oscillator bath. The qubit-oscillator system can be described by the Rabi Hamiltonian. We solve the dynamics of this system numerically with the stochastic Liouville–von Neumann equation and two different Lindblad master equations, the quantum optical master equation and the eigenstate master equation. The former treats the qubit and the oscillator separately and the transitions occur between the eigenstates of the oscillator, whereas the latter treats them as a single system with transitions between the eigenstates of the whole system Hamiltonian. Numerical solutions of the stochastic Liouville–von Neumann equation are unstable with long simulation times. Because of this we are only able to solve it in the case where the qubit and the oscillator are in resonance. In this case we find parameters with which all three equations produce nearly the same results. We also see that there exists cases where only one of the master equations agrees with the stochastic Liouville–von Neumann equation. Further on, we find parameters for which both master equations produce results that deviate notably from those given by the stochastic Liouville–von Neumann equation. In off-resonance, we find that the solutions of the two master equations do not agree with each other for any parameters we study.
These results suggest that the current state of the numerical simulations of open quantum systems can be improved by using the formally exact methods instead of the approximate ones for situations where the environmental coupling is of the order of the qubit-cavity coupling or stronger.

A identidade, durante significativo tempo, foi definida lógico-sensivelmente, isto é, como aquilo que se repetia: homogeneidade, fixidez e imutabilidade. Os estudos culturais, por outro lado, apropriando-se de discussões em várias áreas do conhecimento a respeito da natureza histórico-cultural do ente humano, chegou à conclusão de que as vozes sociais integram sociossemioticamente a consciência individual – e nela interagem –, mostrando que o indivíduo não é tão uno conforme se pensava. Na contemporaneidade, momento em que as certezas têm se desvanecido com maiores intensidade e frequência, as representações construídas pelo/para eu tornam-se mais notáveis. A arte – sendo de ponta a ponta social – vai reverberar isso, o que implica dizer que a configuração enunciativa de sua esfera também é situada num espaço-tempo específicos. Nesse aspecto, a ideologia (enquanto axiologia e campo da atividade humana) é condição da atuação na terra pelo homem, razão pela qual a alteridade goza de fundamental importância na constituição da identidade. Consciente disso, esta pesquisa, a partir da concepção de linguagem bakhtiniana, debruça-se sobre os embates identitários das personagens no seriado “Master of None”, da empresa Netflix. Assim, analisam-se verbivocovisualmente os enunciados concretos materializados no eixo temático “gênero, raça, etnia e classe social”. A área na qual este trabalho se insere é a Linguística Aplicada, caracterizada como entre fronteiras, indisciplinar e constantemente questionadora de seu fazer. A postura metodológica desta investigação desenvolve-se dentro da abordagem qualitativa, com enfoque sócio-histórico e paradigma indiciário. Os resultados colocam em evidência, no enunciado artístico, as estratégias discursivas de monologização e abertura identitária. Nesse contexto, as personagens revelam tons discursivos situados, fazendo jus às identidades assumidas. Seus posicionamentos atuam para corroborar a perpetuação de um sentido ou para subvertê-lo ideologicamente.

This report has analyzed community feedback, greenbelt coverage, greenbelt capacity, and existing local, state, and federal design guidelines. The final plan is a set of goals, objectives, policies, and programs, along with a greenbelt map, which is aimed at improving the greenbelt infrastructure in Davis through the year 2020.
