Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of several stochastic simulation methods applied in computation issue of structure health monitoring (SHM). Design/methodology/approach – On the basis of the previous studies, this research focusses on four promising methods: transitional Markov chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC), slice sampling, slice-Metropolis-Hasting (M-H), and TMCMC-slice algorithm. The slice-M-H is the improved slice sampling algorithm, and the TMCMC-slice is the improved TMCMC algorithm. The performances of the parameters samples generated by these four algorithms are evaluated using two examples: one is the numerical example of a cantilever plate; another is the plate experiment simulating one part of the mechanical structure. Findings – Both the numerical example and experiment show that, identification accuracy of slice-M-H is higher than that of slice sampling; and the identification accuracy of TMCMC-slice is higher than that of TMCMC. In general, the identification accuracy of the methods based on slice (slice sampling and slice-M-H) is higher than that of the methods based on TMCMC (TMCMC and TMCMC-slice). Originality/value – The stochastic simulation methods evaluated in this paper are mainly two categories of representative methods: one introduces the intermediate probability density functions, and another one is the auxiliary variable approach. This paper provides important references about the stochastic simulation methods to solve the ill-conditioned computation issue, which is commonly encountered in SHM.

Bayesian inference is used to calibrate a bottom-up home PLC network model with unknown loads and wires at frequencies up to 30 MHz. A network topology with over 50 parameters is calibrated using global sensitivity analysis and transitional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC). The sensitivity-informed Bayesian inference computes Sobol indices for each network parameter and applies TMCMC to calibrate the most sensitive parameters for a given network topology. A greedy random search with TMCMC is used to refine the discrete random variables of the network. This results in a model that can accurately compute the transfer function despite noisy training data and a high dimensional parameter space. The model is able to infer some parameters of the network used to produce the training data, and accurately computes the transfer function under extrapolative scenarios.

We focus on a Bayesian inference framework for finite element (FE) model updating of a long-span cable-stayed bridge using long-term monitoring data collected from a wireless sensor network (WSN). A robust Bayesian inference method is proposed which marginalizes the prediction-error precisions and applies Transitional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC) algorithm. The proposed marginalizing error precision is compared with other two treatments of prediction-error precisions, including the constant error precisions and updating error precisions through theoretical analysis and numerical investigation based on a bridge FE model. TMCMC is employed to draw samples from the posterior probability density function (PDF) of the structural model parameters and the uncertain prediction-error precision parameters if required. It is found that the proposed Bayesian inference method with prediction-error precisions marginalized as “nuisance” parameters produces an FE model with more accurate posterior uncertainty quantification and robust modal property prediction. When applying the identified modal parameters from acceleration data collected during a one-year period from the large-scale WSN on the bridge, we choose two candidate model classes using different parameter grouping based on the clustering results from a sensitivity analysis and apply Bayes’ Theorem at the model class level. By implementing the TMCMC sampler, both the posterior distributions of the structural model parameters and the plausibility of the two model classes are characterized given the real data. Computation of the posterior probabilities over the candidate model classes provides a procedure for Bayesian model class assessment, where the computation automatically implements Bayesian Ockham razor that trades off between data-fitting and model complexity, which penalizes model classes that “over-fit” the data. The results of FE model updating and assessment based on the real data using the proposed method show that the updated FE model can successfully predict modal properties of the structural system with high accuracy.

The state of materials and accordingly the properties of structures are changing over the period of use, which may influence the reliability and quality of the structure during its life-time. Therefore, identification of the model parameters of the system is a topic which has attracted attention in the content of structural health monitoring. The parameters of a constitutive model are usually identified by minimization of the difference between model response and experimental data. However, the measurement errors and differences in the specimens lead to deviations in the determined parameters. In this article, the focus is on the identification of material parameters of a viscoplastic damaging material using a stochastic simulation technique to generate artificial data which exhibit the same stochastic behavior as experimental data. It is proposed to use Bayesian inverse methods for parameter identification and therefore the model and damage parameters are identified by applying the Transitional Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method (TMCMC) and Gauss-Markov-Kalman filter (GMKF) approach. Identified parameters by using these two Bayesian approaches are compared with the true parameters in the simulation and with each other, and the efficiency of the identification methods is discussed. The aim of this study is to observe which one of the mentioned methods is more suitable and efficient to identify the model and damage parameters of a material model, as a highly non-linear model, using a limited surface displacement measurement vector and see how much information is indeed needed to estimate the parameters accurately.

Les etudes structurales et dynamiques entreprises sur tmcb ont permis d'une part, de decrire les processus ordre-desordre des tma a l'aide de variables de pseudo-spin et d'autre part, d'etablir un modele phenomenologique qui peut rendre compte de la transition ferroelectrique impropre observee. Des etudes par diffraction des rayons x sur tmmc ont permis de suivre l'evolution thermique des parametres d'ordre a l'origine de la transition de phase ferroelastique de type declenchee. Une interpretation de l'ensemble des sequences des transitions de phase de ces materiaux est proposee sur la base de la theorie de landau

This thesis contains a series of journal papers focused on the development of the model-based approach for damage identification using guided waves. The proposed approach requires no baseline data. It can identify multiple damages such as characterising the number, location and the size of cracks in isotropic beams and delaminations in composite beams efficiently and accurately with quantifying the associated uncertainties using linear guided waves. It also investigate the plausibility of using the nonlinear guided wave for damage identification. Based on the modelling ability, this approach is able to extend to different kinds of structures with various types of damages. In utilising the linear guided wave for damage detection, the efficient spectral finite element (SFE) method is used to simulate the guided wave propagation in beams for both isotropic and composite materials. An SFE crack element is developed to simulate crack-wave interaction and the guided wave mode-conversion effect resulted from an asymmetric open crack in the isotropic beam. The delamination is simulated by duplicated the nodes of SFE elements in the delaminated regions. The proposed SFE model is verified using three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) method and good agreements are found in the results. Stochastic methods are applied for the proposed model-based approach in the identification of multiple damages. The Bayesian model class selection algorithm is employed to determine the number of damages. The Bayesian model updating method implemented with efficient transitional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC) sampler is proposed to identify the location and size of the crack. The Bayesian updating with structural reliability method (BUS) using the efficient and robust algorithm, Subset simulation, is proposed to identify the location, delaminated layer and length of the delaminations. The uncertainties of the identification are provided. For validation, the proposed methods are experimentally executed using Laser vibrometre and good agreements are obtained in the results. The proposed SFE model is extended to simulate the nonlinear guided waves resulted from both classical and contact nonlinearity. Numerical case studies and parametric study highlight the potential of the SFE model in simulating nonlinear guided waves. This suggests that the model-based approach employed the nonlinear feature of guided waves to identify damages in further research.

Polymeric nanoparticles have gained increased popularity for drug delivery as they not only overcome the problem of limited aqueous solubility of many hydrophobic drug molecules, but also have the potential to improve the pharmacologic properties of anticancer drugs by increasing their in vivo half-life. A series of biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide-co-2-methyl-2-carboxytrimethylene carbonate), P(LA-co-TMCC), was first synthesized by Sn(Oct)2 catalyzed bulk polymerization. In order to obtain the polymer product with a better-defined composition, the polymer synthesis was improved by using organo-catalytic ring-opening copolymerization. The copolymer molar mass and composition were controlled by varying the monomer to initiator ratio and the monomer feed ratio. By grafting amine-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG-NH2) to the carboxylate groups on the copolymer backbone, amphiphilic copolymers were formed and self-assembled to form nanoparticles with narrow size distribution. The nanoparticle size was observed to be influenced by the polymer composition and the self-assembly conditions. To gain greater insight into the stability of these nanoparticles in blood, they were tested in both fetal bovine serum and individual serum protein solutions. By encapsulating Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) pairs and following their release by fluorescence, these micelles demonstrated strong thermodynamic and kinetic stability in the presence of serum. By incorporating functional groups (azide or furan) on the PEG chains, either cell adhesive peptides (i.e. alkyne-functionalized GRGDS) or targeting antibodies (i.e. maleimide-modified trastuzumab) were coupled to the surface of the nanoparticles through Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction or Diels-Alder chemistry, respectively. The GRGDS modified nanoparticles showed specific binding affinity to rabbit corneal epithelial cells that express αvβ1 integrin receptors.

In recent years, the publishing market in Taiwan has been under great influence. With the progress of new technology, digitalization brought big impact on the publishing industry. Internet and TV are grapping the readers’ attention from their book-reading time, habit and money. Several research works have been done in publishing industry but pay less attention to seek for ways of survival with the perspectives of service marketing. Increasing attention goes to service marketing in business field. However, the concept of service marketing still wait to have further exploration in the researches topics regarding to the publishing market. Due to the lack of literature reporting service marketing with the communication industry, the study was designed as a case study, depth interview and focus group interview to explore insights in this field. An in-depth interview is conducted on a teacher and students in the discipline of communication. There are four research quesitons in this study:(1)How is the developeing context of the Common Wealth Publishing Group’s history?(2)How is the developeing context of Taiwan Manage Case Center , TMCC?(3)How dose the Common Wealth Publishing Group manage the TMCC from the perspectives of concept of service marketing?(4)Aiming to explore the feedbacks of teaching cases ,the product of TMCC , this research further explores the feedbeck of some students one teacher in the discipline of communication. The following questions are as below: (a)for those students who use teaching cases of TMCC, what are their feelings and thought toward the case-teaching in the context of communication-education? (b) for the experienced teacher of writing cases in the communication college, what is her thoughts and feelings toward case-teaching and cases in the TMCC? Four of following arguments are worth summarizing: First, Common Wealth Publishing Group, CWPG, whosticks to the vision to cultivate the culture for over 20 years. It follows with the high quality magazines, loyal readers, and reputable brand. With these advantages, it is argauble to reason that Common Wealth publishing group could keep on innovating during the economic downtur. Second, serving as the HBR's agency in Taiwan,Common Wealth Publishing Group concentrates on the segment regardin to the high-levelmanagers and teachers in the higher education.In addition, after univaersity teachers involve in the projects toward developing teaching casesm they have the same motivation to build up a platform for circulate the teaching cases. Together, Common Wealth Publishing Group, university teachers and Taiwan Academy of Managemnt build up the foundation of Taiwan Management Case Center﹒ Third, This study follows service marketing value chain theory to explore the operation of TMCC. From the point of view of service marketing, our observation indicates that Common Wealth Publishing Group aims to capitalize on the niche market, word-of-mouth strategy, and customized service. Fourth, the author applies with the convenient sampling to interview one communication teacher and some students in the discipline of communication. They give case-teaching positively compliments. However, if we plan to implement case-teaching in the context of communication-education, some caution arise. First of all, case-teaching and lecture method are complementary. Next, small group discussion and classroom discussion play the important role of case study. Finally, teachers have to select suitable cases, to guide and to respect the viewpoints of students. This research tries to give students in the discipline of communication the developing context of Taiwan Manage Case Center, and gives some arguable advises if case-teaching method is exercised in the context of communication-education.
