The Agricultural Economics Research Institute has launched a research project with the aim to analyse the Hungarian land market and the changes occurred since the EU accession as well as to present the tendencies of the development. The statistical data on the land market is rather deficient and cannot be considered representative, therefore, we also included some empirical experiments summarising experts’ opinion referring to all the counties of Hungary. In our paper, we provide our statements and conclusions. The survey shows that the landed property market in Hungary is in a state of anticipation. Demand is primarily for outstanding and good quality land of favourable location in certain countries or larger plots of arable and forestry land. Characteristically, the poorer quality, less accessible land of less favourable location in the neighbourhood of the depopulated, cul-de-sac villages is in oversupply. Scattered, wedged properties of small size or of unclear ownership (undivided common land) are difficult to sell. Many of the vendors are older people with subsistence worries or people who obtained the title by compensation but do not wish to get involved in cultivation. Increasingly more buyers are well capitalised farmers, who wish to increase their holdings, or to unite their property (by land swap). Another significant group of buyers wish to invest into landed property located in the neighbourhood of larger cities, at popular sites, next to main roads or motorways. According to our survey, in the immediate years before the EU accession land and lease prices increased significantly, many fold in relation to quality. Increases in land prices are due to a process of convergence to the EU prices intending to take advantage of the projected unified land market. Increases in lease prices are due to apportioning of the projected land based support between owner and lease holder. According to land sale experts (estate or realty agents) the land market will in the 5−10 years liven up resulting in increases in land and lease prices, although the extent of this cannot yet be prognosticated.

CONCERTGOERS, CRITICS, TEACHERS, AND PERFORMERS are often called upon to cast judgment on the performances they hear. Research to date has typically focused on the judgments themselves, with very few empirical studies of the processes and decisions that lead to these judgments. This paper details an investigation of time-dependent characteristics of performance evaluation. Thirty-three participants were played five recordings of a Bach Prelude and five of a Chopin Prelude. They rated the quality of each performance continuously, by moving a mouse cursor on a 7-point scale displayed on a computer screen, and using written scales. The results suggest that: the time taken to reach an evaluative decision was typically short (around 15––20 s); there was a significant difference between the initial and final ratings, with a tendency for ratings to improve as the performances progressed; and the largest revisions of opinion took place within the first minute of the performance.

Abstract. Sudden increases in cosmic radio noise absorption, known as spike events, have been identified as signatures of substorms in the previous studies. Using data from the IRIS (Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies) at Kilpisjärvi, Finland (L~6) more than 450 night-time spike events between 1994 and 2003 have been identified. Spike events fall into four distinct categories based on their structure and the background magnetic activity as indicated by a local westward electrojet (IL index) derived from the IMAGE (International Monitor for Auroral Geomagnetic Effects) magnetometer network as well as Pi2 magnetic pulsations from SAMNET (The UK Sub-Auroral Magnetometer Network). Classifying the types of absorption spikes allows for identification of phenomena such as multiple onsets and pseudobreakups from riometer data. In addition we have studied the statistical variation of absorption spikes and their sub-classes. This includes examining the magnetic local time (MLT) distribution and the seasonal and solar-cycle variation in spike occurrence. Those that seem to represent substorm onsets show a decidedly different MLT variation to those isolated spikes that represent pseudobreakups. The occurrence of spikes during different levels of geomagnetic activity is examined using the Kp index. Wavelet analysis has been used for studying the temporal structure of spikes; also the direction of motion of spike events and localisation of spikes are presented for all events and each sub-class and results are compared with previous studies. Statistical studies are supported with X-ray images of aurora from PIXIE (The Polar Ionospheric X-ray Imaging Experiment) when available.

In an experiment with three strains of Dominant genotype the effect of oviposition on egg quality characteristics was investigated. Laying hens of the Blue strain (group 1), Plymouth Rock (group 2) and their F1 cross (group 3) from 20 to 64 weeks of age were housed on litter (9 birds per m2). The collection time was at 6.00, 10.00 and 14.00 h. Eggs were gathered in a 28-day interval, every two days all produced eggs (720 eggs in total). The time of oviposition was influenced by genotype. The highest number of eggs was collected in the Plymouth Rock strain at 6.00 (53.5%) and the lowest in the Blue strain at 14.00 (11.1%). There were interactions between the time of oviposition and genotype in egg weight. Eggs laid in the morning at 6.00 were significantly heavier (60.5 g, 64.9 g and 62.1 g) in comparison with eggs laid in the afternoon (59.3 g, 62.4 g and 62.7 g). The heaviest eggs were produced by the Plymouth Rock strain. Significant interactions were observed in eggshell weight when the heaviest eggshell was in afternoon eggs (5.6 g, 5.8 and 5.9 g) and F1 genotype. The egg shape index was also affected by the genotype and time of oviposition. Among the albumen quality characteristics only Haugh Units were influenced by genotype and significantly higher numbers were determined in the Plymouth Rock strain (85.0, 85.3 and 84.7). The genotype significantly affected also the yolk index which was the highest in F1 genotype (45.4%, 45.4% and 44.5%).
