Croton lobatus belongs to the Croton genus (Euphorbiaceae). It is commonly used in traditional medicine for drugs. In order to isolate molecules having physiological properties, five different extracts of grounded leaves and stems have been investigated. The following fractions of each extract using chromatography on silica gel followed by recrystallization have allowed to isolate and purify nineteen different compounds. Chemical elucidation tests have led to the identification of each compound. In each case, the complete structure relying on different analytical methods, for instance: NMR, mass spectra, IR and UV spectra, elementary analysis, melting point and polarimetry was established. Among the identified compounds, one may found steroids, nitrogen compounds, amphiphiles, one triterpene, one triglyceride, fatty acids, one aromatic compound and one hydrocarbon

Basil Ocimum basilicum L is an herbaceous, aromatic, and food crop, which is used fresh or processed in some culinary preparations, thus in traditional medicine. The different parts of this plant present very important biological properties for human health due to their richness in bioactive compounds. The objective of this work is based on the differential characterization of the phytochemical profile of the stems and leaves of Ocimum basilicum and the evaluation of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. The basil extracts showed different phytochemical profiles, and the evaluation of these antioxidant effects by DPPH and ORAC assay showed that the ethanolic extracts had a higher activity compared to the aqueous extracts. The study of the anti-inflammatory effects of ethanolic extracts of basil stems and leaves in vitro in a macrophage J774 cell model stimulated by LPS/IFNγ showed that both extracts had an inhibitory effect on the production of inflammatory mediators (nitric oxide, interlukin-6, prostaglandin E2, Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1), but increased the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFα (Tumour necrosis factor-alpha). Subsequently, the aqueous extracts showed a relaxing effect on rat intestinal smooth muscle. The results of this study indicated that both parts of basil leaves and stems have interesting biological effects that can be valorized in terms of nutrition and health

A kinetic study of growth, notably of radial growth, and an histological study of wood and cambial region were carried out in young seedlings of Quercus robur and Quercus suber grown in favourable conditions, where they were regularly flushing. The two species presented a rhythmic radial growth of the stem, resuIting from a rhythmic cambial activity. This rhythm was synchronous with the apical growth rhythm. The increase in diameter of stem and in length of leaves was in opposition, the minima of the former corresponding to maxima of the latter and vice versa. At each apical growth cycle, a false-ring was formed in wood throughout the stem. False-rings were characterized by periodic changes of the intensity of lignification, probably in the deposition of gaïacyl lignins, but not in the deposition of syringyl lignins. There was a close relationship between false-ring area and photosynthesizing area. Leaves played an essential role in determining radial growth pattern and in the appearance of false-rings. In Quercus robur, leaf blades at the stage of rapid growth determined the decreasing phase (up to the arrest) of the radial growth rhythm, while leaf blades at an early stage (5-9 mm length) determined the deposition of lignins highly reactive to Phloroglucinol-HCl, but did not act on the deposition of syringyl lignins (test of Mäule). Both species of oak trees studied behaved in the same way as for the rythmicity of radial growth and the formation of false-rings, but the resumption of their radial growth after a winter rest had different patterns. Indeed, it spread basipetally in Quercus robur, and simuItaneously in the whole stem in Quercus suber

Increasing water use efficiency (WUE) is a key objective to improve the sustainability of cultivated plants to drought. In that context, this thesis has studied the relation between leaf hydraulics and mesophyll conductance to CO2 (gm), a component that restricts carbon assimilation, in hybrid poplar clones, plants with high growth rates and transpiration. It was first shown, using an improved measurement method, that gm remained constant during the early stages of water stress and declined only below a stomatal conductance (gs) threshold of ~0.15 mol m−2 s−1. Removing stomatal limitations experimentally did not improve gm or leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), which suggests a partial hydraulic isolation of the mesophyll. Furthermore, adding xylem-fed abscisic acid (ABA) or inducing xylem cavitation again showed a delayed gm response and hydraulic isolation of the mesophyll. Two mechanisms would be at play. First, in the case of ABA, hydraulic isolation would delay its delivery and eventually induce mesophyll aquaporins gating and a shift towards the apoplastic water pathway, thus decreasing gm. However, it is only with a decline in turgor caused by xylem cavitation that pressurizing water allows for a full restoration of gm, which suggests a reversible change at the plasma membrane level. Those two mechanisms can be observed during a longer water stress period. Thus, the delay in gm decline by a few days compared to gs suggests an ABA response and the partial hydraulic isolation of the mesophyll. After more than a week of water stress, diurnal changes in gm indicate a daily turgor variation. The variation in gs response to drought and the delay in the decline of gm increase the gm/gs ratio, which is positively correlated to transpiration efficiency, a foliar component of WUE. Thus, the gm/gs ratio was used to discriminate between five poplar genotypes, and the results suggest that it should be improved to increase WUE and the resilience of cultivated plants to drought, which is more than ever critical since drought events are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity under climate change.

The integration of natural cellulosic fibers from annual plants and agricultural residues and agro-industrial materials in the development of composite structures and the development of new bio-based adhesives, are now a research field with growing interest. The thesis was conducted within the framework of "Eco-panels" program, which its two main objectives were firstly, to enhance plant fibers of Tunisian origin as alfa, rush and palm leaflets and then to evaluate the potential of Tunisian plant species whose bark is rich in tannins (pomegranate fruit, sumac roots and Aleppo pine trunk). The characterization studies of fibers showed that their densities are less than 1. The calculation of the fiber saturation point (FSP) shows values mostly between 60 and 100 %. We were also able to characterize the impregnation kinetics of water for each of these fibers. The impregnation stabilizes after 24 h of immersion. Rich in minerals (concentrations greater than 1 %), the fibers showed levels of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose comparable to those generally encountered with wood fibers. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the plant matrices are thermally stable for temperatures below 200 ° C. The colorimetric assay of the polyphenolic composition of tanniferous matrices, the infrared analysis and the structural study of the tannins extract, as well as the calculation of "Stiasny number" show the high content in hydrolysable tannins for pomegranate barks and richness of Aleppo pine trunk barks and sumac roots barks in condensed tannins. The study by TGA of the thermal properties of tannins extracts shows that Aleppo pine and sumac tannins are thermally more stable than those of pomegranate. The formulation made from hexamine and Aleppo pine tannins has the greatest elasticity modulus. While the formulation prepared from pomegranate tannins forms the least dense network. These results were confirmed by the study of the shear strength. The study conducted on fiber-plaster composites (implementation and physico-mechanical characterization of composites) showed that local fiber could be an alternative to imported fibers used currently. A first characterization of the thermal conductivity of insulation panels made from local plant fibers and tannins adhesives shows an average conductivity of 0,106 W / Km

A precommercial thinning (PCT) trial was conducted in mixedwood stands of balsam fir – white birch bioclimatic domain in three different regions of Quebec (Portneuf, Maurice, Lac St-Jean). Ninety-six stems (balsam fir and black spruce) were selected in three different PCT treatments. These stems were analyzed and compared to stems from control stands. Two alternative PCT treatments were compared to 2001 PCT standard. The first one consists in the preservation of residual stems in a quarter circle. The second one consists in spacing out to five meters intolerant hardwood stems. The five year impact of PCT was analyzed against PCT treatments and the number of competing stems (in a four meters radius). Results suggest that the number of competing stems has a negative impact on five-year increment in stem diameter and on branch diameter, but a positive impact on latewood content. Branch diameter five years after PCT varies according to PCT treatment and branch position in the stem. Latewood content varies according to PCT treatment, initial stem diameter and position in the stem. Latewood content is also affected by the number of competing stems. This study provides a better understanding of PCT effects on wood quality in mixedwood stands and allowed us to compare those results to the situation that prevails in softwood- dominated stands. In the light of our results, we suggest to preserve some competing stems in order to weaken negative impacts of PCT on wood quality.
