The Hokan and Penutian language classifications, introduced by Dixon & Kroeber (1913), remain controversial nearly a century after they were first proposed. Recently developed computational methods for identifying historical relationships between languages are promising tools for assessing distant linguistic relationship proposals such as these. This paper uses a variation of the linguistic relatedness metric and multilateral clustering procedure developed by Kessler (1999, 2001) to study California language phylogenetics. The purpose is twofold: to evaluate the utility of this methodology for identifying deep relationships, and to re-examine the evidence for Hokan and Penutian groupings. While this paper illustrates several advantages of the methodology employed, it ultimately fails to provide any additional support for Hokan or Penutian. I conclude that while this result may be influenced by the sensitivity of the methodology to the composition of the input sample, it ultimately casts further doubt on the genealogical nature of the Hokan and Penutian classificatory groups.

The effects of static tilts about the roll (anterior-posterior) axis on human horizontal optokinetic afternystagmus (HOKAN) were examined. Static tilts in roll, with subjects lying on their left side, produced significant tilt-dependent HOKAN suppression. Only the slow (indirect pathway) component time constant (1/D) of the double exponential model for human HOKAN decreased with angle of roll tilt. The effect was direction specific in that suppression occurred only following a leftward-going stimulus. These findings provide further support for the postulate that otolith-organ-mediated activity can couple to the horizontal velocity storage mechanism in humans. A slight trend towards a tilt-dependent reduction of coefficient A (initial slow phase velocity of fast component decay) was revealed, suggesting the possibility that otolith-organ-mediated activity could couple to direct (pursuit-mediated?) pathways as well. No horizontal-to-vertical cross-coupling occurred, indicating that this aspect of the 3-dimensional model for velocity storage proposed by Raphan & Cohen (1988) may not completely apply to humans.

The effects of static tilts about the pitch axis on human horizontal optokinetic afternystagmus OKAN (HOKAN) were examined. Static tilts in pitch produced tilt-dependent HOKAN suppression. The slow decay (indirect pathway) component (coefficient C and long time constant 1/D) of the two-component model for OKAN was significantly reduced, while the short decay (direct pathway) component (coefficient A and short time constant 1/B) remained invariant as angle of tilt was increased. These results provide further evidence that otolith organ activity can couple to horizontal velocity storage in humans; in accordance with models proposed in the literature.

This article will provide a broad (although by no means comprehensive) overview of the development of modern scholarly historical writing pertaining the Middle East’s Kurdish community prior to the end of the First World War. It seeks to highlight some of the important pioneering scholars who shaped the field during its twentieth century as well as more recent flurry of academic activity that has, since the turn of the twenty-first century, resulted in a publication of a number of important works that have greatly expanded our knowledge of Kurdish history. However, it will also endeavour to highlight some of the deficits in the existing historiography, most notably relating to Kurdistan in the early modern period (the early sixteenth to early nineteenth century) and, more specifically, the relatively underdeveloped nature of the literature on “Iranian” Kurdistan during this era. In doing so, it hopes to provide context for the three articles published in this issue of Kurdish Studies, all of which examine issues relating to culture and power in early modern “Iranian” Kurdistan.ABSTRACT IN KURMANJILi ser sînorên împeretoriyê: “Hêmana Îranî” di dîroka pêş-modêrn ya Kurdistanê deEv gotar dê nirxandineke berfireh (lê ne giştgir) a nivîsarên li ser dîroka gelê kurd ê li Rojhilata Navîn yên berî xelasiya Şerê Cîhanî yê Yekem. The horizontal optokinetic reflex (HOKR) and the horizontal vestibuloocular reflex (HVOR) were tested in 21 rabbits before and after unilateral lesions were made in the left cerebellar flocculus. The immediate effect, observed within 15 min following placement of a floccular lesion, was a conjugate nystagmus with the slow phase toward the side opposite to the lesion when the animal was placed in total darkness. This spontaneous nystagmus lasted from several hours to two days depending on the extent of damage to the flocculus. It was reversed in sign if the subjacent vestibular nuclei or vestibular nerve were damaged by the operation, and it was totally absent if the unilateral floccular lesions were made in rabbits that had been bilaterally labyrinthectomized. The spontaneous drift of the eyes observed immediately postoperatively caused a bias in measurement of the HVOR that was dependent on the frequency of vestibular stimulation. When measured 50 days postoperatively the HVOR had a normal gain and normal bias. When measured 50 days postoperatively the monocular HOKR (posteroanterior stimulation of the left eye) was significantly reduced in gain at stimulus velocities below 5 degrees/s. A quantitative anatomical analysis of the degeneration of inferior olivary neurons caused by lesions of the flocculus demonstrated contralateral cell loss of as much as 65% of the dorsal cap neuronal population. These data reveal a permanent deficit in the HOKR, but not the HVOR, following unilateral floccular lesions and are consistent with the idea that the flocculus contributes to the regulation of the low-velocity eye movements through the inhibitory modulation of the activity of the subjacent vestibular nuclei.

The thirteenth-century Hebrew texts that discuss salinity all ultimately go back to Aristotle's treatment of the subject in theMeteorology. However, in these Hebrew texts the question of what exactly makes the sea salty is answered in diverging ways. The oldest of them, theOtot ha-Shamayim(1210), being the Hebrew translation of the Arabic paraphrase of theMeteorology, proposes various causes of the sea's salinity, to wit, the dry exhalation, the action of heat, and the admixture of an earthy substance. This is due partly to Aristotle's own ambiguity, and partly to the fact that his Greek commentators interpreted his words in different ways. Two later encyclopedias, theMidrash ha-Hokhma(c. 1245) and theDe'ot ha-Philosofim(c. 1275?) base their expositions of salinity on Ibn Rushd, whose two commentaries on theMeteorologycontain various theories. The first encyclopedia opts for the action of heat as the major cause in producing saltiness, whereas the second attempts to explain in which way the various causes are interrelated by advisedly combining Ibn Rushd's accounts.

Some road construction projects use petrasoil additive to increase soil stabilization, one of then is the Improvement of Tabarfane-Hokmar (Chemical Petrasoil) Road Project in Aru Selatan Timur District, Aru Islands. To obtain the influence of petrasoil aditive material as soil stabilization in swamp areas, a research is needed. petrasoil additives that powder shape are dissolved in water with 3 variations, namely 500 liters, 750 liters, and 1000 liters of water. Tests which carried out include compaction testing, index properties, and CBR. The results showed that the addition of petrasoil mixture with water without being combined with other added ingredients could lead to increasingly unstable soil conditions where the soil water content increased and the dry weight of the soil diminished, meaning that soil density decreases, and the CBR value of soil decreases.

The scarcity of long geological records of major earthquakes, on different types of faults, makes testing hypotheses of regular versus random or clustered earthquake recurrence behavior difficult. We provide a fault-proximal major earthquake record spanning 8000 years on the strike-slip Alpine Fault in New Zealand. Cyclic stratigraphy at Hokuri Creek suggests that the fault ruptured to the surface 24 times, and event ages yield a 0.33 coefficient of variation in recurrence interval. We associate this near-regular earthquake recurrence with a geometrically simple strike-slip fault, with high slip rate, accommodating a high proportion of plate boundary motion that works in isolation from other faults. We propose that it is valid to apply time-dependent earthquake recurrence models for seismic hazard estimation to similar faults worldwide.

Recreational areas are one of the most important uses in the modern residential neighborhoods because they improve economic resources, social life, and environmental quality. This paper discusses the impact of recreational areas on residential property values in Riyadh. The paper relies on the descriptive and comparative analysis of the case study model 'Al-Hokair Land' by extrapolating the residents' view of the residential properties close to the recreational area in Al-Hamra neighborhood. The paper also analyzed the relationship between recreational area and land price changes in urban communities within Al-Hamra district. The paper found that the average land price in Al-Hamra district is $826 per square meter, which is the highest compared to the neighboring areas. Moreover, land prices in urban communities near the recreational area are the highest with an average of $933 per square meter. Finally, the value of residential properties areas is affected by environmental, security, urban or social factors associated with recreational activity. Therefore, the paper recommends improving the quality of the urban environment to ensure the stability of the residential properties value in line within framework of the Saudi Vision 2030.

Since the arrival of Arabian ethnic to Sugihwaras, they settled and built their own neighborhood identity. The built environment is an example of a system on which human beings seek to express their own identity as a collective group. Every built environment consists of distinctive features that relate to social, cultural, economic and environmental parameters inherent in that particular built-environment (Al-Hokail, 1995). Based on that background, the research question of this study is “what is the distinctiveness of built environment in Kampung Arab Sugihwaras Pekalongan?”. The purpose of this article is to identify and explain the built environment in Kampung Arab Sugihwaras by its social and physical parameters. Using both qualitative and quantitative approach, this article examines the social parameters by its four social scales: neighborhood, family and individual, the physicalparameters by its urban fabrics. The result shows that community who lives in Kampung Arab Sugihwaras especially the Arabian descendant preserving Islamic value in their social lives. Hokama, Jason Y., Ryan S. Streeper, and Erik J. Henriksen.Voluntary exercise training enhances glucose transport in muscle stimulated by insulin-like growth factor I. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(2): 508–512, 1997.—Skeletal muscle glucose transport can be regulated by hormonal factors such as insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). Although it is well established that exercise training increases insulin action on muscle glucose transport, it is currently unknown whether exercise training leads to an enhancement of IGF-I-stimulated glucose transport in skeletal muscle. Therefore, we measured glucose transport activity [by using 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG) uptake] in the isolated rat epitrochlearis muscle stimulated by submaximally and maximally effective concentrations of insulin (0.2 and 13.3 nM) or IGF-I (5 and 50 nM) after 1, 2, and 3 wk of voluntary wheel running (WR). After 1 wk of WR, both submaximal and maximal insulin-stimulated 2-DG uptake rates were significantly ( P < 0.05) enhanced (43 and 31%) compared with those of sedentary controls, and these variables were further increased after 2 (86 and 57%) and 3 wk (71 and 70%) of WR. Submaximal and maximal IGF-I-stimulated 2-DG uptake rates were significantly enhanced after 1 wk of WR (82 and 61%), and these increases did not expand substantially after 2 (71 and 58%) and 3 wk (96 and 70%) of WR. This enhancement of hormone-stimulated 2-DG uptake in WR muscles preceded any alteration in glucose transporter (GLUT-4) protein level, which increased only after 2 (24%) and 3 wk (54%) of WR. Increases in GLUT-4 protein were significantly correlated ( r = 0.844) with increases in citrate synthase. These results indicate that exercise training can enhance both insulin-stimulated and IGF-I-stimulated muscle glucose transport activity and that these improvements can develop without an increase in GLUT-4 protein.

As an effort to improve the subgrade, some construction projects use petrasoil material to increase the carrying capacity of the soil, for example in the construction of the "Improvement of the Tabarfane-Hokmar Soil Road (Chemical Petrasoil)” in Aru sub-district. Previous research on increasing the carrying capacity of the soil have been done using petrasoil, but the results indicated no soil carrying-capacity increase. On the contrary, another study successfully used fly ash on swamps to increase the soil carrying-capacity. Based on these two studies, the current research combined the two additives, namely, fly ash and petrasoil, to increase soil carrying-capacity and get an optimal additive composition. Some tests have been carried out, i.e. the index properties test, compaction test, and CBR test using AASHTO and ASTM standards. Fly ash mixtures were prepared in several composition percentages, i.e. 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, while the mixture of petrasoil and water is 1 kg: 1000 liters. The results showed that there was an increase in soil bearing capacity based on the largest CBR value in the variation of mixed soil with petrasoil and fly ash by 20% which is equal to 19.7% of the CBR value of original soil without additives.

The study concerns the names of clothing, home furnishings, everyday objects, tools, and means of transport contained in the lexicon of the Bydgoszcz city dialect. This lexical stock includes the names of the outer garment (e.g. buks ‘trousers’), recreational clothes (badeje ‘swimming trunks’), headgear (e.g. lujmycka ‘hooligan’s cap’), footwear (e.g. kropusy ‘men’s shoes with high uppers’). Another area is the apartment; for example, the names of kitchen equipment have German origin (e.g. ausgust ‘kitchen sink’, kastrolka ‘saucepan’). This also concerns the names of three stools differing in height: the lowest one is called ryczka, a taller one is szemel, and the tallest is hoker. Texts in the Bydgoszcz city dialect also contain the names of artefacts necessary to perform everyday activities, such as cleaning (e.g. szruber ‘rice brush’) or laundry (e.g. balia ‘large wooden bath tub’). A separate place in the material culture of the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz is occupied by technological vocabulary, such as the names of tools (żaga ‘saw’) and transport (e.g. rolwaga ‘horse-drawn cart for transportation of goods’). Most of the names are Germanisms. A smaller number come from rural or folk dialects (e.g. modre ‘bleaching agent’, rydelek ‘visor of a cap’, szlory ‘old, trodden footwear’, trygiel ‘cast iron pot’). It is concluded that the city dialect is not only a museum or heritage park but also a treasury of old words.

The second in a series on secularism in psychotherapy, this article reprises the idea that paranormal, religious, spiritual or visionary experience is an essential quality of the human mind, and rather than being minimised as merely neurological events or interpreted, for instance as regression, can be given a position of meaning and importance. A distinction is made between the description of neurological or psychological events and their meaning. It is argued that visions can take us forward and give us hope and direction, rather than being considered an aspect of neurosis. Abstract. We present the characterization and application of a new gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry instrument (GC-TOFMS) for the quantitative analysis of halocarbons in air samples. The setup comprises three fundamental enhancements compared to our earlier work (Hoker et al., 2015): (1) full automation, (2) a mass resolving power R = m/Δm of the TOFMS (Tofwerk AG, Switzerland) increased up to 4000 and (3) a fully accessible data format of the mass spectrometric data. Automation in combination with the accessible data allowed an in-depth characterization of the instrument. Mass accuracy was found to be approximately 5 ppm in mean after automatic recalibration of the mass axis in each measurement. A TOFMS configuration giving R = 3500 was chosen to provide an R-to-sensitivity ratio suitable for our purpose. Calculated detection limits are as low as a few femtograms by means of the accurate mass information. The precision for substance quantification was 0.15 % at the best for an individual measurement and in general mainly determined by the signal-to-noise ratio of the chromatographic peak. Detector non-linearity was found to be insignificant up to a mixing ratio of roughly 150 ppt at 0.5 L sampled volume. At higher concentrations, non-linearities of a few percent were observed (precision level: 0.2 %) but could be attributed to a potential source within the detection system. A straightforward correction for those non-linearities was applied in data processing, again by exploiting the accurate mass information. Based on the overall characterization results, the GC-TOFMS instrument was found to be very well suited for the task of quantitative halocarbon trace gas observation and a big step forward compared to scanning, quadrupole MS with low mass resolving power and a TOFMS technique reported to be non-linear and restricted by a small dynamical range.

ABSTRACT Introduction Several intravenous iron preparations are available for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Some of these require multiple small infusions to prevent labile iron reactions, while iron dextran (DEX) is associated with a risk of potentially serious anaphylactic reactions. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), a non-DEX intravenous iron, is an effective and a safe option, which can be administered in high single doses without serious adverse effects. Objective The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FCM in the treatment of IDA in gynecological patients. Materials and methods It was an open, single-arm study including 442 women of age more than 18 years with definitive diagnosis of IDA and hemoglobin (Hb) between 4 and 11 gm% from December 2013 to November 2016. Out of these, 25 women were lost to follow-up and were excluded from the study. Intravenous FCM (500—1500 mg) was administered and the improvement in Hb levels and iron stores was assessed after 3 weeks of total dose infusion. Results Out of the 442 women, 417 women were included in the analysis. Most of the women were in the age group of 30 to 39 years. Most of the women had mild anemia as per the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Mean Hb levels significantly increased over a period of 3 weeks after FCM administration. Other parameters like total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin, and iron also had a significant improvement after FCM administration. No serious life-threatening adverse events were observed after FCM administration. Conclusion Intravenous FCM is an effective and a safe treatment option for IDA and has an advantage of single administration of high doses without serious adverse effects. Postwar Japanese calligraphy has been little studied in Western art history, and in particular, there is no analysis of the work of one of the most important calligraphers of postwar Japan,Yukei Teshima (1901–1987). The relevance of this research lies in the fact that the Calligraphy of Images (Japanese “Shosho”), created by the master, is an example of building a dialogue between fundamentally different traditions of Western and Eastern art, a dialogue that allows the calligrapher to see the uniqueness of Japanese calligraphy, including its spiritual and aesthetic content. The purpose of this study is to determine the specifics of Teshima’s work, using the example of his most famous artworks: “Hokai” (literally “Collapse”) (1957), containing the image of houses collapsing one after another from the explosions of aerial bombs at the end of World War II; and “Tsubame” (“Swallow”) (1960), giving rise to the feeling of flight through a “dancing” movement of a bird. The authors conclude that, although Tesima’s “calligraphic paintings” show a connection simultaneously with the Chinese roots of Japanese calligraphy and the avant-garde painting of the West, the calligrapher remains faithful to the Japanese artistic and aesthetic tradition. Unlike Chinese calligraphy, traditionally understood as a tool for “nurturing life”, or avant-garde painting generated by Western conceptuality, Teshima’s calligraphy expresses the Buddhist ideals of accepting one’s destiny (one’s path to enlightenment) and lack of attachment. The calligrapher uses the “hisshoku” (“rusty brush”) writing technique, which involves “overcoming” the brush and conveying the tactile sensation of a stroke (a symbol of overcoming the materiality of the world), and also forms the “boundless space” of the sheet, i. e. “aki”, which he calls “Space of [divine] love” and connects with the free soaring of the spirit.

Many factors influence the selection of expedition services, such as the length of delivery, the price offered to the services provided. At first the company chose the expedition service partner based solely on customs, but often there were obstacles such as unsatisfactory service, less neat packing of goods, high prices and so forth. The impact is the customer's disappointment with the service we provide. In selecting the best expedition services, a mechanism is needed to deliver the goods that are truly feasible. One of them can be done by using a decision support system with the topsis method. Where the TOPSIS method has a simple and easy-to-understand concept and has the ability to measure the relative performance of decision alternatives in a simple mathematical form. The criteria used in this study include price, service, delivery time, range, type of fleet and company experience, while alternative options for expedition services are Ezra Cargo, Sentral Cargo, Dakota Cargo, Indah Logistik Cargo, Run Logistics, Trans Java Sumatra. The results of calculations using the Topsis method can be said that, the selection of the best expeditionary services is Central Cargo with first place with a value of 0,8887, then followed by Indah Logistik Cargo with second place with a value of 0,5866, and third place is Ezra Cargo with a value of 0,5444. Thus, Central Cargo is the best solution in the selection of expedition services at PT. Tachimita Hoka Utama.

This article interrogates the use of state-organised violence against the Kurds by focusing on four major cases of mass violence conducted in the early republican era in the 1920s and 1930s. Through the examination of the key processes and major policies, the study explains state violence as historically and causally related to the logic and imperatives of imposing and maintaining direct rule over the predominantly Kurdish-inhabited territories in post-Ottoman Turkey. To better understand the nature of state violence, I present three mutually reinforcing and interconnected conceptual pathways: integral colonisation, incorporation by nation-destruction and colonial violence. The paper argues that the strategies of state formation and expansion into Kurdistan along with the coercive policies of creating a unitary and homogenous Turkish nation took the form of integral colonisation. This process, while laying the foundations for the politics of incorporation by nation-destruction, co-existed with and informed by the use of colonial violence. Disaggregated into ideological, ethnocidal and genocidal violence, colonial violence is thus referred to as underlying mechanism behind the recurrent use of state violence in Kurdistan. Working as a clerk in Hokand Khanate and general secretary of khans and being one of the most esteemed and honourable individuals of that era, Ziyabiddin Magzumi was a statesman who lived in nineteenth century. Magzumi, whose exact birth and death dates are unknown, completed a manuscript work called – “History of the Fergana Khans”- which consisted of 833 leaves or 1666 pages. Written in the Old Chagatai language, this work was written from 1865-1888 upon the order of Kudayar Khan. The only known copy of this manuscript as the most comprehensive work about the Hokand Khanates is available in İstanbul. This manuscript was translated into the Kyrgyz language in 2007 and was issued in Bishkek. The work written by Magzumi, who was referred to as Magzuni in the manuscript, is based on political events during the Kudayar Khan period as well as information about Kudayar Khan’s life and personality. In addition, it includes actions of Sherali Khan to gain the throne in 1842, other plots against the throne in the Khanate, public opinion, and events such as enthronement of İshak Khan (Polat Khan). In the work written up in the style of –“Şahname”- there is information about personal qualities required to be a governor. Almost no information is given about failures of Kudayar Khan in the work. However, the manuscript glosses over Kudayar Khan’s failures, which points to the main objective of the work: not to give an unbiased chronological account of the era, but to praise the works of Hokand Khans and Sultan’s sons. Nevertheless, the work contains such valuable information as interrelations of the Khans and Sultan’s sons, wars in which they took part and how the wars were guided, clear descriptions of some names used in Hokand State, diplomacy of the Khanate, relations of the Khanate with other states, rituals for giving presents to each other, order in Hokand Palace, change of thrones, hospitality customs, victory celebrations, and daily life and trips of Khans.

ABSTRACT Smooth septate junctions (sSJs) regulate the paracellular transport in the intestinal tract in arthropods. In Drosophila, the organization and physiological function of sSJs are regulated by at least three sSJ-specific membrane proteins: Ssk, Mesh and Tsp2A. Here, we report a novel sSJ membrane protein, Hoka, which has a single membrane-spanning segment with a short extracellular region, and a cytoplasmic region with Tyr-Thr-Pro-Ala motifs. The larval midgut in hoka mutants shows a defect in sSJ structure. Hoka forms a complex with Ssk, Mesh and Tsp2A, and is required for the correct localization of these proteins to sSJs. Knockdown of hoka in the adult midgut leads to intestinal barrier dysfunction and stem cell overproliferation. In hoka-knockdown midguts, aPKC is upregulated in the cytoplasm and the apical membrane of epithelial cells. The depletion of aPKC and yki in hoka-knockdown midguts results in reduced stem cell overproliferation. These findings indicate that Hoka cooperates with the sSJ proteins Ssk, Mesh and Tsp2A to organize sSJs, and is required for maintaining intestinal stem cell homeostasis through the regulation of aPKC and Yki activities in the Drosophila midgut.

AbstractMass balance is a good indicator of glacier health and sensitivity to climate change. The debris-covered Hoksar Glacier (HG) in the Upper Indus Basin (UIB) was studied using direct and geodetic mass balances. During the 5-year period from 2013 to 2018, the glacier’s mean in situ mass balance (MB) was − 0.95 ± 0.39 m w.e. a−1. Similarly, the glacier’s mean geodetic MB from 2000 to 2012 was − 1.20 ± 0.35 m w.e. a−1. The continuously negative MB observations indicated that the HG is losing mass at a higher rate than several other Himalayan glaciers. The glacier showed increased mass loss with increasing altitude, in contrast to the typical decreasing MB with increasing elevation, due to the existence of thick debris cover in the ablation zone, which thins out regularly towards the accumulation zone. Rising temperatures, depleting snowfall and increasing black carbon concentration in the region, indicators of climatic change, have all contributed to the increased mass loss of the HG. During the lean period, when glacier melt contributes significantly to streamflow, the mass loss of glaciers has had a considerable impact on streamflow. Water availability for food, energy, and other essential economic sectors would be adversely affected, if, glaciers in the region continued to lose mass due to climatic change. However, long-term MB and hydro-meteorological observations are required to gain a better understanding of glacier recession in the region as climate changes in the UIB.

ABSTRACT The Hok/Gef family consists of structurally similar, single-span membrane peptides that all contain a positively charged N-terminal domain, an α-helix and a periplasmic C-terminal domain. Hok/Gef peptides have previously been described to play distinct physiological roles. Indeed, while HokB has been implicated in bacterial persistence, other members of the Hok/Gef family are known to induce cell lysis. However, the generalizability of previously published studies is problematic, as they have all used different expression systems. Therefore, we conducted a systematic study of the nine Hok/Gef peptides of Escherichia coli. We observed rapid cell death following expression of hokA, hokC, hokD, hokE, pndA1, hok or srnB, while expression of hokB or pndA2 does not result in cell lysis. A remarkable feature of Hok/Gef peptides is the presence of conserved periplasmic tyrosine and/or cysteine residues. For the HokB peptide, one of these residues has previously been implicated in intermolecular dimerization, which is essential for HokB to exert its role in persistence. To assess the role of the periplasmic cysteine and tyrosine residues in other Hok/Gef peptides and to decipher whether these residues determine peptide toxicity, an array of substitution mutants were constructed. We found that these residues are important activators of toxicity for Hok, HokA and HokE peptides. Despite the loss of the cell killing phenotype in HokS31_Y48, HokAS29_S46 and HokES29_Y46, these peptides do not exert a persister phenotype. More research is needed to fully comprehend why HokB is the sole peptide of the Hok/Gef family that mediates persistence.

Experiments were carried out in the farmer’s field at Jorhat during 2015-16 and 2016-17 to study the population dynamics of red ant Dorylus orientalis Westwood in potato crop. The incidence of D. orientalis was observed both under flood free/ and prone conditions in three villages each, during potato growing season. These data were correlated with weather factors. The effect on population buildup was studied with observations at fortnightly interval starting from 1st fortnight of October to 2nd fortnight of February through fixed plot surveys. The observations revealed that maximum incidence (36.5, 33.2 and 30.1; 35.2, 32.5 and 29.8/ pit) was observed in Charaibahi, Karangia and Hokai Khangia villages, respectively during the 1st fortnight of January. In contrast, in the flood prone villages, incidence was observed to be negligible. Correlation coefficients of incidence with weather factors revealed that minimum temperature, soil temperature (morning and evening) and evaporation rate show a significantly negative correlation; whereas relative humidity (RH) (morning and evening) exhibited significant positive correlation in flood free villages. In flood prone villages minimum temperature as well as morning soil temperature showed significant negative correlation (2015-16); in contrast, in flood prone villages, RH (morning and evening) showed significant positive correlation (2016-17).

AbstractThis paper concerns clausal embedding in Washo (also spelled Washoe, Wáˑšiw), a highly endangered Hokan/isolate language spoken around Lake Tahoe in the United States. We argue that Washo offers evidence that both complementation and modification are available strategies for subordination, and in doing so contribute more generally to the ongoing debate about how clauses are embedded by attitude verbs. We observe that the embedding strategies of certain predicates in Washo follow from independent properties of clause types in the language. On the one hand, clauses embedded by presuppositional verbs come in the form of clausal nominalizations, which are selected as thematic internal arguments. The DP layer in these complements is responsible for encoding familiarity in a general sense (along the lines of Kastner 2015) both in these complement clauses as well as in other constructions in the language. On the other hand, clauses embedded by non-presuppositional verbs are not selected at all; they are instead adjunct modifiers, which follows from the fact that the attitude verbs they modify are always intransitive. This aspect of the analysis lends support to the property-analysis of ‘that’-clauses (e.g., Kratzer 2006; Moulton 2009; Elliott 2016), but only in certain instances of embedding. We argue that the Washo facts show that selection still plays a role for some verbs, contra theories that do away with it altogether (Elliott 2016), but selection cannot explain everything either, as non-presuppositional verbs are intransitive and do not select at all.

In 2013, the Capricornia Arts Mob (CAM), an Indigenous collective of artists situated in Rockhampton, central Queensland, Australia, successfully tendered for one of three public art projects that were grouped under the title Flood Markers (Roberts; Roberts and Mackay; Robinson and Mackay). Commissioned as part of the Queensland Government's Community Development and Engagement Initiative, Flood Markers aims to increase awareness of Rockhampton’s history, with particular focus on the Fitzroy River and the phenomena of flooding. Honouring Land Connections is CAM’s contribution to the project and consists of several “memory poles” that stand alongside the Fitzroy River in Toonooba Park. Rockhampton lies on Dharumbal Country with Toonooba being the Dharumbal name for the Fitzroy River and the inspiration for the work due to its cultural significance to the Aboriginal people of that region. The name Toonooba, as well as other images and icons including boomerangs, spears, nets, water lily, and frogs, amongst others, are carved, burnt, painted and embedded into the large ironbark poles. These stand with the river on one side and the colonial infrastructure of Rockhampton on the other (see fig. 1, 2 and 3).Figure 1 Figure 2Figure 3Within this article, we discuss Honouring Land Connections as having two main functions which contribute to its significance as Indigenous cultural expression and identity affirmation. Firstly, the memory poles (as well as the process of sourcing materials and producing the final product) are a manifestation of Country and a representation of its stories and lived memories. Honouring Land Connections provides a means for Aboriginal people to revel in Country and maintain connections to a vital component of their being as Indigenous. Secondly, by revealing Indigenous stories, experiences, and memories, Honouring Land Connections emphasises Indigenous voices and perspectives within a place dominated by Eurocentric outlooks and knowledges. Toonooba provides the backdrop on which the complexities of cultural and identity formation within settler-colonial spaces are highlighted whilst revelling in continuous Indigenous presence.Flood Markers as ArtArtists throughout the world have used flood markers as a means of visual expression through which to explore and reveal local histories, events, environments, and socio-cultural understandings of the relationships between persons, places, and the phenomena of flooding. Geertz describes art as a social text embedded within wider socio-cultural systems; providing insight into cultural, social, political, economic, gendered, religious, ethnic, environmental, and biographical contexts. Flood markers are not merely metric tools used for measuring the height of a river, but rather serve as culture artefacts or indexes (Gell Art and Agency; Gell "Technology of Enchantment") that are products and producers of socio-culture contexts and the memories and experiences embedded within them. Through different methods, mediums, and images, artists have created experiential and intellectual spaces where those who encounter their work are encouraged to engage their surroundings in thought provoking and often-new ways.In some cases, flood markers have brought attention to the “character and natural history” of a particular place, where artists such as Louise Lavarack have sought to provoke consciousness of the movement of water across flood plains (Lavarack). In other works, flood markers have served as memorials to individuals such as Gilbert White whose daughter honoured his life and research through installing a glass spire at Boulder Creek, Colorado in 2011 (White). Tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 have also been commemorated through flood markers. Artist Christopher Saucedo carved 1,836 waves into a freestanding granite block; each wave representing a life lost (University of New Orleans). The weight of the granite symbolises the endurance and resilience of those who faced, and will continue to face, similar forces of nature. The Pillar of Courage erected in 2011 in Ipswich, Queensland, similarly contains the words “resilience, community, strength, heroes, caring and unity” with each word printed on six separate sections of the pillar, representing the six major floods that have hit the region (Chudleigh).Whilst these flood markers provide valuable insights into local histories, specific to each environmental and socio-cultural context, works such as the Pillar of Courage fail to address Indigenous relationships to Country. By framing flooding as a “natural disaster” to be overcome, rather than an expression of Country to be listened to and understood, Euro and human-centric perspectives are prioritised over Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Indigenous knowledges however encourages a reorientation of Eurocentric responses and relationships to Country, and in doing so challenge compartmentalised views of “nature” where flooding is separated from land and Country (Ingold Perception; Seton and Bradley; Singer). Honouring Land Connections symbolises the voice and eternal presence of Toonooba and counters presentations of flooding that depict it as historian Heather Goodall (36) once saw “as unusual events of disorder in which the river leaves its proper place with catastrophic results.”Country To understand flooding from Indigenous perspectives it is first necessary to discuss Country and apprehend what it means for Indigenous peoples. Country refers to the physical, cosmological, geographical, relational, and emotional setting upon which Indigenous identities and connections to place and kin are embedded. Far from a passive geographic location upon which interactions take place, Country is an active and responsive agent that shapes and contextualises social interactions between and amongst all living beings. Bob Morgan writes of how “Country is more than issues of land and geography; it is about spirituality and identity, knowing who we are and who we are connected to; and it helps us understand how all living things are connected.” Country is also an epistemological frame that is filled with knowledge that may be known and familiarised whilst being knowledge itself (Langton "Sacred"; Rose Dingo; Yunupingu).Central to understanding Country is the fact that it refers to a living being’s spiritual homeland which is the ontological place where relationships are formed and maintained (Yunupingu). As Country nurtures and provides the necessities for survival and prosperity, Indigenous people (but also non-Indigenous populations) have moral obligations to care for Country as kin (Rose Nourishing Terrains). Country is epistemic, relational, and ontological and refers to both physical locations as well as modes of “being” (Heidegger), meaning it is carried from place to place as an embodiment within a person’s consciousness. Sally Morgan (263) describes how “our country is alive, and no matter where we go, our country never leaves us.” Country therefore is fluid and mobile for it is ontologically inseparable to one’s personhood, reflected through phrases such as “I am country” (B. Morgan 204).Country is in continuous dialogue with its surroundings and provides the setting upon which human and non-human beings; topographical features such as mountains and rivers; ancestral beings and spirits such as the Rainbow Snake; and ecological phenomena such as winds, tides, and floods, interact and mutually inform each other’s existence (Rose Nourishing Terrains). For Aboriginal people, understanding Country requires “deep listening” (Atkinson; Ungunmerr), a responsive awareness that moves beyond monological and human-centric understandings of the world and calls for deeper understandings of the mutual and co-dependant relationships that exist within it. The awareness of such mutuality has been discussed through terms such as “kincentrism” (Salmón), “meshworks” (Ingold Lines), “webs of connection” (Hokari), “nesting” (Malpas), and “native science” (Cajete). Such concepts are ways of theorising “place” as relational, physical, and mental locations made up of numerous smaller interactions, each of which contribute to the identity and meaning of place. Whilst each individual agent or object retains its own autonomy, such autonomy is dependent on its wider relation to others, meaning that place is a location where “objectivity, subjectivity and inter-subjectivity converge” (Malpas 35) and where the very essence of place is revealed.Flooding as DialogueWhen positioned within Indigenous frameworks, flooding is both an agent and expression of Toonooba and Country. For the phenomenon to occur however, numerous elements come into play such as the fall of rain; the layout of the surrounding terrain; human interference through built weirs and dams; and the actions and intervention of ancestral beings and spirits. Furthermore, flooding has a direct impact on Country and all life within it. This is highlighted by Dharumbal Elder Uncle Billy Mann (Fitzroy Basin Association "Billy Mann") who speaks of the importance of flooding in bringing water to inland lagoons which provide food sources for Dharumbal people, especially at times when the water in Toonooba is low. Such lagoons remain important places for fishing, hunting, recreational activities, and cultural practices but are reliant on the flow of water caused by the flowing, and at times flooding river, which Uncle Mann describes as the “lifeblood” of Dharumbal people and Country (Fitzroy Basin Association "Billy Mann"). Through her research in the Murray-Darling region of New South Wales, Weir writes of how flooding sustains life though cycles that contribute to ecological balance, providing nourishment and food sources for all beings (see also Cullen and Cullen 98). Water’s movement across land provokes the movement of animals such as mice and lizards, providing food for snakes. Frogs emerge from dry clay plains, finding newly made waterholes. Small aquatic organisms flourish and provide food sources for birds. Golden and silver perch spawn, and receding waters promote germination and growth. Aboriginal artist Ron Hurley depicts a similar cycle in a screen-print titled Waterlily–Darambal Totem. In this work Hurley shows floodwaters washing away old water lily roots that have been cooked in ant bed ovens as part of Dharumbal ceremonies (UQ Anthropology Museum). The cooking of the water lily exposes new seeds, which rains carry to nearby creeks and lagoons. The seeds take root and provide food sources for the following year. Cooking water lily during Dharumbal ceremonies contributes to securing and maintaining a sustainable food source as well as being part of Dharumbal cultural practice. Culture, ecological management, and everyday activity are mutually connected, along with being revealed and revelled in. Aboriginal Elder and ranger Uncle Fred Conway explains how Country teaches Aboriginal people to live in balance with their surroundings (Fitzroy Basin Association "Fred Conway"). As Country is in constant communication, numerous signifiers can be observed on land and waterscapes, indicating the most productive and sustainable time to pursue certain actions, source particular foods, or move to particular locations. The best time for fishing in central Queensland for example is when Wattles are in bloom, indicating a time when fish are “fatter and sweeter” (Fitzroy Basin Association "Fred Conway"). In this case, the Wattle is 1) autonomous, having its own life cycle; 2) mutually dependant, coming into being because of seasonal weather patterns; and 3) an agent of Country that teaches those with awareness how to respond and benefit from its lessons.Dialogue with Country As Country is sentient and responsive, it is vital that a person remains contextually aware of their actions on and towards their surroundings. Indigenous peoples seek familiarity with Country but also ensure that they themselves are known and familiarised by it (Rose Dingo). In a practice likened to “baptism”, Langton ("Earth") describes how Aboriginal Elders in Cape York pour water over the head of newcomers as a way of introducing them to Country, and ensuring that Country knows those who walk upon it. These introductions are done out of respect for Country and are a way of protecting outsiders from the potentially harmful powers of ancestral beings. Toussaint et al. similarly note how during mortuary rites, parents of the deceased take water from rivers and spit it back into the land, symbolising the spirit’s return to Country.Dharumbal man Robin Hatfield demonstrates the importance of not interfering with the dialogue of Country through recalling being told as a child not to disturb Barraru or green frogs. Memmott (78) writes that frogs share a relationship with the rain and flooding caused by Munda-gadda, the Rainbow Snake. Uncle Dougie Hatfield explains the significance of Munda-gadda to his Country stating how “our Aboriginal culture tells us that all the waterways, lagoons, creeks, rivers etc. and many landforms were created by and still are protected by the Moonda-Ngutta, what white people call the Rainbow Snake” (Memmott 79).In the case of Robin Hatfield, to interfere with Barraru’s “business” is to threaten its dialogue with Munda-gadda and in turn the dialogue of Country in form of rain. In addition to disrupting the relational balance between the frog and Munda-gadda, such actions potentially have far-reaching social and cosmological consequences. The rain’s disruption affects the flood plains, which has direct consequences for local flora and transportation and germination of water lily seeds; fauna, affecting the spawning of fish and their movement into lagoons; and ancestral beings such as Munda-gadda who continue to reside within Toonooba.Honouring Land Connections provided artists with a means to enter their own dialogue with Country and explore, discuss, engage, negotiate, and affirm aspects of their indigeneity. The artists wanted the artwork to remain organic to demonstrate honour and respect for Dharumbal connections with Country (Roberts). This meant that materials were sourced from the surrounding Country and the poles placed in a wave-like pattern resembling Munda-gadda. Alongside the designs and symbols painted and carved into the poles, fish skins, birds, nests, and frogs are embalmed within cavities that are cut into the wood, acting as windows that allow viewers to witness components of Country that are often overlooked (see fig. 4). Country therefore is an equal participant within the artwork’s creation and continuing memories and stories. More than a representation of Country, Honouring Land Connections is a literal manifestation of it.Figure 4Opening Dialogue with Non-Indigenous AustraliaHonouring Land Connections is an artistic and cultural expression that revels in Indigenous understandings of place. The installation however remains positioned within a contested “hybrid” setting that is informed by both Indigenous and settler-colonial outlooks (Bhabha). The installation for example is separated from the other two artworks of Flood Markers that explore Rockhampton’s colonial and industrial history. Whilst these are positioned within a landscaped area, Honouring Land Connections is placed where the grass is dying, seating is lacking, and is situated next to a dilapidated coast guard building. It is a location that is as quickly left behind as it is encountered. Its separation from the other two works is further emphasised through its depiction in the project brief as a representation of Rockhampton’s pre-colonial history. Presenting it in such a way has the effect of bookending Aboriginal culture in relation to European settlement, suggesting that its themes belong to a time past rather than an immediate present. Almost as if it is a revelation in and of itself. Within settler-colonial settings, place is heavily politicised and often contested. In what can be seen as an ongoing form of colonialism, Eurocentric epistemologies and understandings of place continue to dominate public thought, rhetoric, and action in ways that legitimise White positionality whilst questioning and/or subjugating other ways of knowing, being, and doing (K. Martin; Moreton-Robinson; Wolfe). This turns places such as Toonooba into agonistic locations of contrasting and competing interests (Bradfield). For many Aboriginal peoples, the memories and emotions attached to a particular place can render it as either comfortable and culturally safe, or as unsafe, unsuitable, unwelcoming, and exclusionary (Fredericks). Honouring Land Connections is one way of publicly asserting and recognising Toonooba as a culturally safe, welcoming, and deeply meaningful place for Indigenous peoples. Whilst the themes explored in Honouring Land Connections are not overtly political, its presence on colonised/invaded land unsettles Eurocentric falsities and colonial amnesia (B. Martin) of an uncontested place and history in which Indigenous voices and knowledges are silenced. The artwork is a physical reminder that encourages awareness—particularly for non-Indigenous populations—of Indigenous voices that are continuously demanding recognition of Aboriginal place within Country. Similar to the boomerangs carved into the poles representing flooding as a natural expression of Country that will return (see fig. 5), Indigenous peoples continue to demand that the wider non-Indigenous population acknowledge, respect, and morally responded to Aboriginal cultures and knowledges.Figure 5Conclusion Far from a historic account of the past, the artists of CAM have created an artwork that promotes awareness of an immediate and emerging Indigenous presence on Country. It creates a space that is welcoming to Indigenous people, allowing them to engage with and affirm aspects of their living histories and cultural identities. Through sharing stories and providing “windows” into Aboriginal culture, Country, and lived experiences (which like the frogs of Toonooba are so often overlooked), the memory poles invite and welcome an open dialogue with non-Indigenous Australians where all may consider their shared presence and mutual dependence on each other and their surroundings. The memory poles are mediatory agents that stand on Country, revealing and bearing witness to the survival, resistance, tenacity, and continuity of Aboriginal peoples within the Rockhampton region and along Toonooba. Honouring Land Connections is not simply a means of reclaiming the river as an Indigenous space, for reclamation signifies something regained after it has been lost. What the memory poles signify is something eternally present, i.e. Toonooba is and forever will be embedded in Aboriginal Country in which we all, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, human and non-human, share. The memory poles serve as lasting reminders of whose Country Rockhampton is on and describes the life ways of that Country, including times of flood. Through celebrating and revelling in the presence of Country, the artists of CAM are revealing the deep connection they have to Country to the wider non-Indigenous community.ReferencesAtkinson, Judy.
