Term graphs are a natural generalization of terms in which structure sharing is allowed. Structure sharing makes term graph rewriting a time- and space-efficient method for implementing term rewrite systems. Certain structure sharing schemes can lead to a situation in which a term graph component is rewritten to another component that contains the original. This phenomenon, called redex capturing, introduces cycles into the term graph which is being rewritten—even when the graph and the rule themselves do not contain cycles. In some applications, redex capturing is undesirable, such as in contexts where garbage collectors require that graphs be acyclic. In other applications, for example in the use of the fixed-point combinator Y, redex capturing acts as a rewriting optimization. We show, using results about infinite rewritings of trees, that term graph rewriting with arbitrary structure sharing (including redex capturing) is sound for left-linear term rewrite systems.

Although the term ‘rewritten Bible’ has been used primarily of postbiblical Jewish retellings of the Hebrew Bible, the phenomenon which it describes extends to the present day, and pertains to the NT as well as the Hebrew Bible. This paper examines two examples of ‘rewritten Gospel’—Dorothy Sayers's play cycle,The Man Born to Be King(1941–2) and Sholem Asch's novel,The Nazarene(1939)—in order to argue that such postcanonical Jesus narratives should be of interest to NT scholarship just as ‘rewritten Bible’ is of interest to scholars of the Hebrew Bible.

In the present study, Hindy Najman addresses two fundamental aspects related to Second Temple Jewish literature: pseudepigrapha and the rewritten Bible. Pseudepigrapha as a literary genre signifies texts which claim as their author some privileged individual from the past. In reality, however, the attribution of authorship to some ancient figure masks the present-day composition of the text. The term rewritten Bible, in its broadest use, refers to the interpretive reworking of the scriptural text and story through such means as expansion, deletion, harmonization, and conflation. The final product retains the narrative sequence of the scriptural account though in a significantly modified form. Both of these literary techniques seemingly have at their base a manipulation and subversion of the integrity of the scriptural story and text. Pseudepigrapha asserts for a latter day author the authority and prestige of an ancient figure; rewritten Bible presents itself as a new and improved scripture.

While no consensus obtains among specialists as to what the term “rewritten Bible” (or “rewritten Scripture”) properly denotes—or whether, indeed, it is proper to use at all—most agree that the texts thought to represent this category are basically exegetical in character. That is, they are supposed to have as their aim or goal the interpretation of texts that are now part of the Hebrew Bible. At the same time, it is universally recognized that the authors of so-called rewritten Bible compositions exercised a substantial degree of freedom in their retelling. They clearly had their own interests, motives, and aims, distinct from those of the biblical narrative. These interests (sometimes characterized as “ideological” in nature), in turn, determine the structure or literary shape of their work, including such basic elements as character, plot, scope, and narrative voice. Thus, while it is constitutive for the genre or category that such works mainly follow the sequence and wording of the biblical text, they are not—and cannot be—identical to the latter in compositional form. Every rewritten Bible composition is defined by its own retelling strategy or program.

Abstract To retain the concept of rewritten Bible as a scholarly category it is not only crucial to slightly change the name of the notion by re-designating it “rewritten Scripture” but also to accord the term the status of a cross-cultural third-order concept. This will allow research to detach the notion from its somewhat current “parochial” nature intrinsically linked as it is to the study of Second Temple Jewish literature. Rewritten Scripture should be conceived of as an excessive form of intertextuality that signifies the relationship existing between scriptural predecessor and rewritten piece with respect to the question of authority. Apart from advancing the theoretical discussion of the nomenclature, the essay takes a fresh look at a moot point that has loomed large in previous debates, whether rewritten Scripture strives to replace its scriptural predecessor or aims to complement it in an irenic fashion. The acknowledgement of some aspectualism grants legitimacy to both viewpoints, when they are rightfully understood within their proper perspectives. Finally, the article engages in typological considerations that will allow us to distinguish between three continua defined by respectively content, form, and function. Each constitutes a continuum on its own that advantageously may be segmented by several caesuras, which will allow us to differentiate between irenic scriptural completion at the one end of the spectrum and scriptural cannibalism at the other end of the spectrum. The fact that two works belonging to the category diverge on one continuum does not imply a corresponding divergence at other continua.

In the present study a particular case of Gross-Pitaevskii or nonlinear Schrödinger equation is rewritten to a form similar to a hydrodynamic Euler equation using the Madelung transformation. The obtained system of differential equations is highly nonlinear. Regarding the solutions, a larger coefficient of the nonlinear term yields stronger deviation of the solution from the linear case.

The term “Rewritten Bible” was introduced by Géza Vermes in 1961 to describe works from late Second Temple period that “retell” or “rewrite” Scriptures with characteristic changes. Since then, much has been written about this category of texts. Today some researchers are tired of discussing this concept, suggesting even a move away from the notion. Others, on the contrary, apply it to an increasing number of texts, including even works lying outside the specific context of late Second Temple Jewish literature. This article discusses the phenomenon of the “Rewritten Bible” (RewB) and takes up a polemic with certain approaches to the category, concerning terminology, scope, and character, as well as indication of the purposes of rewriting activity. The article shows that the category remains useful and important, within certain methodological clarifications.

The theme writing in English A is of the most elementary description; but the compositions in this course, over 6,000 in number during each half year, are carefully criticized by the proper instructor and returned by him to the student. They are then rewritten, and often recast. Owing to the number of these exercises and the constant accumulation of fresh papers the rewritten themes are not read by the instructors, except to determine the final grade of a student whose mark is doubtful. We propose a new method to calibrate the local volatility function of an asset from observed option prices of the underlying. Our method is initialized with a preprocessing step in which the given data are smoothened using cubic splines before they are differentiated numerically. In a second step the Dupire equation is rewritten as a linear equation for a rational expression of the local volatility. This equation is solved with Tikhonov regularization, using some discrete gradient approximation as penalty term. We show that this procedure yields local volatilities which appear to be qualitatively correct.

The population development of Czechia in 2020 was significantly affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. Epidemiological measures or the pandemic itself were reflected in almost all monitored demographic processes, and in many cases long-term trends were interrupted. In addition, existing minimums or maximums were rewritten within the period of the last ten years. The article focuses on the main demographic processes, namely births, deaths, marriages, divorces and migration. The beginning of the examined period is the year 2011, in which the census took place, and then the following years, especially the period 2015–2020.

In practice, the class imbalance is prevalent in sentiment classification tasks, which is harmful to classifiers. Recently, over-sampling strategies based on data augmentation techniques have caught the eyes of researchers. They generate new samples by rewriting the original samples. Nevertheless, the samples to be rewritten are usually selected randomly, which means that useless samples may be selected, thus adding this type of samples. Based on this observation, we propose a novel balancing strategy for text sentiment classification. Our approach takes word replacement as foundation and can be divided into two stages, which not only can balance the class distribution of training set, but also can modify noisy data. In the first stage, we perform word replacement on specific samples instead of random samples to obtain new samples. According to the noise detection, the second stage revises the sentiment of noisy samples. Toward this aim, we propose an improved term weighting called TF-IGM-CW for imbalanced text datasets, which contributes to extracting the target rewritten samples and feature words. We conduct experiments on four public sentiment datasets. Results suggest that our method outperforms several other resampling methods and can be integrated with various classification algorithms easily.

Models incorporating delay have been frequently used to understand climate variability phenomena, but often the delay is introduced through an ad hoc physical reasoning, such as the propagation time of waves. In this paper, the Mori-Zwanzig formalism is introduced as a way to systematically derive delay models from systems of partial differential equations and hence provides a better justification for using these delay-type models. The Mori-Zwanzig technique gives a formal rewriting of the system using a projection onto a set of resolved variables, where the rewritten system contains a memory term. The computation of this memory term requires solving the orthogonal dynamics equation, which represents the unresolved dynamics. For nonlinear systems, it is often not possible to obtain an analytical solution to the orthogonal dynamics and an approximate solution needs to be found. Here, we demonstrate the Mori-Zwanzig technique for a two-strip model of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and explore methods to solve the orthogonal dynamics. The resulting nonlinear delay model contains an additional term compared to previously proposed ad hoc conceptual models. This new term leads to a larger ENSO period, which is closer to that seen in observations.

AbstractRewriting logic is naturally concurrent: several subterms of the state term can be rewritten simultaneously. But state terms are global, which makes compositionality difficult to achieve. Compositionality here means being able to decompose a complex system into its functional components and code each as an isolated and encapsulated system. Our goal is to help bringing compositionality to system specification in rewriting logic. The base of our proposal is the operation that we call synchronous composition. We discuss the motivations and implications of our proposal, formalize it for rewriting logic and also for transition structures, to be used as semantics, and show the power of our approach with some examples.

The first-order form of a Maxwell theory and U(1) gauge theory in which a gauge invariant mass term appears is analyzed using the Dirac procedure. The form of the gauge transformation that leaves the action invariant is derived from the constraints present. A nonabelian generalization is similarly analyzed. This first-order three dimensional massive gauge theory is rewritten in terms of two interacting vector fields. The constraint structure when using light-cone coordinates is considered. The relationship between first- and second-order forms of the two-dimensional Einstein–Hilbert action is explored where a Lagrange multiplier is used to ensure their equivalence.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the lattice Boltzmann method’s ability to simulate a microflow under constant heat flux. Design/methodology/approach Develop the thermal lattice Boltzmann method based on double population of hydrodynamic and thermal distribution functions. Findings The buoyancy forces, caused by gravity, can change the hydrodynamic properties of the flow. As a result, the gravity term was included in the Boltzmann equation as an external force, and the equations were rewritten under new conditions. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first attempt to investigate mixed-convection heat transfer in an inclined microchannel in a slip flow regime.

Scholarly treatments of the Visions of Levi have tended not to address the individual literary units of the text. An overview of the history of scholarship on this text reveals that neither the term “Aramaic Testament of Levi” nor the more neutral Aramaic Levi Document offers particular insights into the content of the text. Close attention to the literary forms of the text – which include an autobiographical narration, a petitionary prayer, a visionary dream, rewritten/reinterpreted Bible, sapiential/professional instruction, a birth account, a subsequent onomastic midrash, and a didactic poem, that concludes with a prophetic speech with apocalyptic overtones – reveal that the Visions of Levi should be understood as Jewish priestly didactic literature.

The numerical stability of different formulas for the correction term of the half-space Green’s function is investigated. The formula with complex monopoles is taken as a reference. The expressions of Koh and Yook, tested in a previous publication [R. Piscoya and M. Ochmann, Acoustical Green’s function and boundary element techniques for 3D half-space problems, J. Comput. Acoust. (2017), https://doi.org/10.1142/S0218396X17300018 ], are rewritten to improve their range of application. The formulas of Sommerfeld and Thomasson are analyzed and its suitability for a BEM implementation is evaluated by comparing their accuracy against our reference. For the sake of completeness, the first and second derivatives of the formulas are explicitly written.

This paper is devoted to the continuation of solutions to the Camassa–Holm equation after wave breaking. By introducing a new set of independent and dependent variables, the evolution problem is rewritten as a semilinear hyperbolic system in an L∞space, containing a non-local source term which is discontinuous but has bounded directional variation. For a given initial condition, the Cauchy problem has a unique solution obtained as fixed point of a contractive integral transformation. Returning to the original variables, we obtain a semigroup of global dissipative solutions, defined for every initial data [Formula: see text], and continuously depending on the initial data. The new variables resolve all singularities due to possible wave breaking and ensure that energy loss occurs only through wave breaking.

We have analyzed the far-field approximation of the Green’s function representation for seismic interferometry. By writing each of the Green’s functions involved in the correlation process as a superposition of a direct wave and a scattered wave, the Green’s function representation is rewritten as a superposition of four terms. When the scattered waves are modeled with the Born approximation, it appears that a three-term approximation of the Green’s function representation (omitting the term containing the crosscorrelation of the scattered waves) yields a nearly exact retrieval, whereas the full four-term expression leads to a significant nonphysical event. This is because the Born approximation does not conserve energy and therefore is an insufficient model to explain all aspects of seismic interferometry. We use the full four-term expression of the Green’s function representation to derive the generalized optical theorem. Unlike other recent derivations, which use stationary phase analysis, our derivation uses reciprocity theory. From the generalized optical theorem, we derive the nonlinear scattering matrix of a point scatterer. This nonlinear model accounts for primary and multiple scattering at the point scatterer and conforms with well-established scattering theory of classical waves. The model is essential to explain fully the results of seismic interferometry, even when it is applied to the response of a single point scatterer. The nonlinear scattering matrix also has implications for modeling, inversion, and migration.

The known van der Waals and Berthelot equations of state do-not precisely describe the thermodynamic properties of fluids. To improve its accuracy, the attractive term of the van der Waals equation of state has been modified in six different ways. These generalized equations of state have been employed to determine the spinodal (thermodynamic stability boundary) and the thermodynamic limit of superheat of liquid lead. The equations of state are rewritten in reduced form, from which follows the law of corresponding states. The appropriate modification of the attractive term of the equation of state yielding the value of thermodynamic limit of superheat agreeing with the experimental value for lead has been established. It has been established that liquid lead can be superheated, under rapid heating, up to a temperature 4565 K. That is, liquid lead can be superheated to 2544 K above the normal boiling temperature. At the thermodynamic limit of superheat, the volume of the liquid lead is 4.0095 × 10-5 m3 mol-1. This fact is to be taken into account when liquid lead is subjected to rapid heating.

This paper examines Translation, Rewriting and the Manipulation of the Holy Qur'an, with specific reference to the translated Quran from Arabic into English by Bakhtiar, namely The Sublime Quran. The study focuses on the translation of Surat Al Kafirun, the term Kafirun in some ayat in Surat Al Baqara, Al Imran, Al Nissa, Fusilat, and Qaf using the same translations of the Holy Quran by the translators stated below. The researcher looks at the process of translation used by Bakhtiar and examines whether we may consider the translation of the concerned Surat as a translation, a rewriting, or a manipulation for specific purposes. The study is a comparative one. The researcher compares the translation of the Surat in question with three women translators. The concerned translators are known under the name of Saheeh International, the translation of King Fahd Complex, M. Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali & M. Muhsin Khan, J.A.Arberry, Abdullah Yusuf Ali as well as M.A.S. Abdel Halim. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher concludes that Bakhtiar has rewritten and did not translate the term kafirun, but has manipulated its translation through rewriting it probably for Ideological Reasons.

Theory of gravitation based on a non-Riemannian geometry with dynamical torsion field is geometrically analyzed. To this end, the simplest Lagrangian density is introduced as a measure (reminiscent of a sigma model) and the dynamical equations are derived. Our goal is to rewrite this generalized affine action in a suitable form similar to the standard Born–Infeld (BI) Lagrangian. As soon as the functional action is rewritten in the BI form, the dynamical equations lead the trace-free GR-type equation and the field equations for the torsion, respectively: both equations emerge from the model in a sharp contrast with other attempts where additional assumptions were heuristically introduced. In this theoretical context, the Einstein [Formula: see text], Newton [Formula: see text] and the analog to the absolute [Formula: see text]-field into the standard BI theory all arise from the same geometry through geometrical invariant quantities (as from the curvature [Formula: see text]). They can be clearly identified and correctly interpreted both physical and geometrically. Interesting theoretical and physical aspects of the proposed theory are given as clear examples that show the viability of this approach to explain several problems of actual interest. Some of them are the dynamo effect and geometrical origin of [Formula: see text] term, origin of primordial magnetic fields and the role of the torsion in the actual symmetry of the standard model. The relation with gauge theories, conserved currents, and other problems of astrophysical character is discussed with some detail.

The article discusses an actual problem of the contemporary social theory – a problem of post-postmodernism that is the answer to the question: what comes to replace the supposedly outdated postmodernism. Post-postmodernism in an umbrella term that brings together various concepts like digimodernism, automodernism, metamodernism, hypermodernism, supermodernism, etc. One of the replacing postmodernism theories is the French curator and art theorist Nicolas Bourriaud’s concept that was called “altermodern” or “other modernism.” In his previous books Bourriaud proposed to rewrite modernism and, as the result, developed a new theory. The concept appeared in 2009 when Bourriaud presented the exhibition in London, timed to the publication of his manifesto Altermodern, and edited and published the book of collected papers of the same title. Globalization, which opened borders for art, is a central concept of the altermodernism theory. The main terms of altermodern are heterochrony (time diversity) and viatorisation (nomadism). The main social subject of the alternodern era is a free travelling artist, who interprets the meanings of “rewritten” art for the public. They are “rewritten” because Bourriaud proposes to use phenomena and products of past ages to make them work in a new way. However Bourriaud’s concept should be considered critically, as it was formerly done by several researchers. The article proposes a critical review that answers to the question: to what extent the idea of altermodern is heuristic and therefore it could compete with other concepts that abolish postmodern. The author gives a negative answer to this question first of all because altermodern just borrows a lot of elements of the language and apparatus of postmodernism and actually does not offer anything new.

This paper investigates the hybrid-driven mechanism problem for Markov jump system, where both channel quantization (BCQ) and network-induced delay based on uncertain network are considered. Firstly, comparing with the traditional event-triggered scheme, a hybrid-driven mechanism is employed in networked control systems (NCSs) for the finite capacity of communication bandwidth resources and system performance in equilibrium. Then, the quantization technology is applied in the communication channel from sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator. The application of BCQ is for further investigation that mitigate data packet transmission rate. Thirdly, Markov jump system is modeled for the hybrid-driven mechanism and network-induced delay. By constructing the Lyapunov–Krasovskii function, a sufficient condition is derived as the stability criterion, and the controller is designed in which the nonlinear term is rewritten for simplifying the calculation. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The purpose of this research is to reveal the range and depth of older island-dwelling Puerto Ricans' perceptions of viable long-term care alternatives and to evaluate the demographic and cultural underpinnings of their attitudes, preferences, and expectations for particular care options. Data from the census and sample surveys show demographic changes that simultaneously expand the numbers of older adults and reduce the numbers of potential family caregivers. Focus group data reveal cultural changes concurrent with demographic shift. Older Puerto Ricans see that the traditional intergenerational contract that promotes family care to older adults is being rewritten to accommodate the demographic changes of the late 20th century and cultural changes observed in the younger generations. They strive to retain some measure of self-management and to more flexibly integrate informal and formal services, creating a dynamic and individualized plan of care for themselves.

The classical central field is analyzed within the Hammond theory of radiation reaction force. For the attractive Coulomb field, the trajectories deduced from Ford and Hammond equations are numerically obtained. Ford and Hammond equations are rewritten by using a recent correction to the non-relativistic equations for charged point particles which include a radiation reaction force term. Also, for the attractive Coulomb case, the trajectories are numerically obtained for both corrected equations. A comparison between all these trajectories is made. It is proved that Hammond equation satisfies the constraint proposed by Dirac of getting an equation of motion which should make the electron in the hydrogen atom spiralling inwards and ultimately falling into the nucleus. A further analysis of the applicability of such a theory is described for experiments particularly in Plasma Physics and some comments are made for the generalization of Hammond equation to General Relativity.

Analyzing th esystem of mortgage we must reach back to the Roman Law. At that era it had been possible to pledge liabilities, rights and moreover aggregated asset, property. Mortgage is a long term institute of Hungarian Private Law as well. Paragraphs 251 – 269 of Act IV of 1959 on the Civil Code of the Republic of Hungary regulates mortgage in the Law of Obligations, placed among collaterals. In the last two decades the old Civil Code of the Republic of Hungary has been modified twice. Act V of 2013on the Civil Code of the Republic of Hungary weakens but definitely rewritten the principles of lending. Regulation of mortgage and the system of chattel mortgage registry has significantly changed. Several novelty has been introduced therefore the system of chattel mortgage registry was reformed too. Detailed regulations of credit guarantee registry in Act CCXXI of 2013 and Act 18/2014. (III. 13.) KIM has also been accepted correspondingly to the previous changes.

Various critics have examined Charlotte Brontë’s Villette’s missing ending as a proof of Lucy Snowe’s unreliability in leaving the narrative purposefully ambiguous to escape her possible negative ending. I, however, interpret the ending as one of the ways in which she actively and positively refuses the concept of closure, and rather, creates, what I would call, a nomadic narrative. Nomadic narrative is term I coined based on the idea of Rosi Braidotti’s nomadic theory and Georg Lukács’s The Theory of the Novel to re-imagine Lucy’s narration and narrative, not as a concealment, but as an embracement of her nomadic subjectivity and acknowledgement that she has no true end. I further argue that nomadic narrative is a narrative that fractures and recreates itself through its gaps and rewritten portions, gaining its own sense of agency. Unlike narratives that only fixate on protagonists, nomadic narrative becomes an open and posthuman space that allows the incorporation of nonhuman subjects.

We are interested in the modelling of multi-dimensional turbulent hydraulic jumps in convergent radial flow. To describe the formation of intensive eddies (rollers) at the front of the hydraulic jump, a new model of shear shallow water flows is used. The governing equations form a non-conservative hyperbolic system with dissipative source terms. The structure of equations is reminiscent of generic Reynolds-averaged Euler equations for barotropic compressible turbulent flows. Two types of dissipative term are studied. The first one corresponds to a Chézy-like dissipation rate, and the second one to a standard energy dissipation rate commonly used in compressible turbulence. Both of them guarantee the positive definiteness of the Reynolds stress tensor. The equations are rewritten in polar coordinates and numerically solved by using an original splitting procedure. Numerical results for both types of dissipation are presented and qualitatively compared with the experimental works. The results show both experimentally observed phenomena (cusp formation at the front of the hydraulic jump) as well as new flow patterns (the shape of the hydraulic jump becomes a rotating square).

A brief review is presented about the ELKO spinor field applied to cosmology, with the main results and limitations of the theory. As a simple application, we have analyzed a model involving the interaction of the ELKO spinor field with dark matter in the universe from a dynamical system approach. When the system is rewritten in terms of the deceleration parameter q and under the assumption that such parameter is nearly constant for some different stages of the evolution, stability points were found for different types of interaction between dark matter and ELKO spinors. Within this new analysis several interesting scenarios are possible, depending on the interaction term. For example, if it is assumed that the equation of the state parameter of the ELKO field is of the phantom type, ωϕ < -1, the current acceleration of the universe can be driven by the decay of dark matter particles into ELKO field. Furthermore, even for ωϕ > 0, the inflationary period can be driven by the decay of the inflaton field (described by the ELKO spinor) into dark matter particles.

Intertextual discourses about the origins of humanity often cross generic boundaries between religion, science, informative media and entertaining fi ction through the sharing and borrowing of words and concepts. These genres, however reluctantly, inevitably engage with one another in what emerges as a single discourse about who we are and where we came from. Throughout this discourse, certain concepts have formed as time, place, and identity are linguistically associated with one another. The dichotomy of Non-Modern Africa as Other and ModernNon-Africa as Self is one such concept. Caution must be exercised by researchers who wish to talk about human origins, as these types of concepts may have very real implications in political, economic, social, and cultural arenas.

Equation of phonon radiative transport (EPRT) is rewritten to include anisotropic scattering by a particulate media by including an acoustic phase function and an inscattering term which makes EPRT exactly same as equation of radiative transport (ERT). This formulation of EPRT is called generalized EPRT (GEPRT). It is shown that GEPRT reduces to EPRT for isotropic scattering and is totally consistent with phonon transport theory, showing that transport cross section is different from the scattering cross section. GEPRT leads to same formulation for transport cross section as given by phonon transport theory. However GEPRT shows that transport cross section formulations as described by phonon transport theory are only valid for acoustically thick medium. Transport cross section is different for the acoustically thin medium leading to the conclusion that mean free path (m.f.p) is size dependant. Finally calculations are performed for two types of scatterers for acoustic waves without mode conversion: (1) acoustically hard Rayleigh sphere; and (2) large sphere in the geometrical scattering regime. Results show that the scattering from these particles is highly anisotropic. It is also shown that for geometrical scattering case isotropic scattering leads to the conclusion of total internal reflection at the particle/medium interface.

This paper describes ongoing developments to an advanced laboratory course at Kettering University, which is targeted to students in engineering and engineering physics and emphasizes theoretical, computational, and experimental components in the context of airborne acoustics and modal testing [cf. D. A. Russell and D. O. Ludwigsen, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131, 2515–2524 (2012)]. These developments have included a transition to electronic laboratory notebooks and cloud-based computing resources, incorporation of updated hardware and software, and creation and testing of a multiple-choice assessment instrument for the course. When Kettering University suddenly shifted to exclusively remote teaching in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these changes proved to be essential for enabling rapid adaptation to a situation in which a laboratory was not available for the course. Laboratory activities were rewritten by crowdsourcing archived data, videos were incorporated to illustrate dynamic phenomena, and computer simulations were used to retain student interactivity. The comparison of multiple measures, including the assessment instrument, team-based grades on project papers, and individual grades on final exams, indicates that most students were successful at learning the course material and adapting to work on team-based projects in the midst of challenging remote learning conditions.

We compare the three‐term equation to the normal moveout (NMO) equation for several synthetic data sets to analyze whether or not it is worth making the additional computational effort in the stacking process within various exploration contexts. In our evaluation we have selected two criteria: 1)The quality of the stacked image. 2) The reliability of the stacking parameters and their usefulness for further computation such as interval velocity estimation. We have simulated the stacking process very precisely, despite using only the traveltimes and not the full waveform data. The procedure searches for maximum coherency along the traveltime curve rather than a least‐square regression to it. This technique, which we call the Gaussian‐weighted least square, avoids most of the shortcomings of the least‐square method. The following are our conclusions: 1) The three term equation gives a better stack than the regular NMO. The increase in stacking energy can be more than 30 percent. 2)The calculation of interval velocities using a DIX formula rewritten for the three‐parameter equation is much more stable and accurate than the standard DIX formula. 3) The search for the three parameters is feasible in an efficient way since the shifted hyperbola requires only static corrections rather than dy namic ones. 4) Noise alters the parameters of the maximum energy stack in a way that depends on the noise type. The estimates obtained remain accurate enough for interval velocity estimation (where only two parameters are needed), but the use of the three parameters in direct inversion may be hazardous because of noise corruption. These conclusions should, however, be verified on real data examples.

The effect of rotation has been investigated with emphasis on the impact of blade geometry on the “correction factor” in stall models. The data used came from field tests and wind tunnel experiments performed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and were restricted to the steady-state nonyawed conditions. Three blade layouts were available; a blade with constant chord without twist (phase II), a blade with constant chord and twist (phases III and IV), and a tapered blade with twist (phase VI). Effects due to twist and taper were determined from comparison of c n between the different blade layouts. The formulation of the stall model was rewritten so that the measured c n values could be used without reference to 2D airfoil performance. This enabled a direct comparison of the normal force characteristics between the four blade stations of the selected blade configurations. In particular, the correction term f used in stall models for rotational effects was analyzed. The comparison between the test results with a straight and a twisted blade showed that a relation for twist + pitch is required in f . In addition, a dependency offon the angle-of-attack was identified in the measurements and it is recommended that this dependency be incorporated in the stall models.

This work is focused on the a numerical finite volume scheme for the resulting coupled shallow water-Exner system in 1D applications with arbitrary geometry. The mathematical expression modeling the the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic components of the physical phenomenon are treated to deal with cross-section shape variations and empirical solid discharge estimations. The resulting coupled system of equations can be rewritten as a nonconservative hyperbolic system with three moving waves and one stationary wave to account for the source terms discretization. But, even for the simplest solid transport models as the Grass law, to find a linearized Jacobian matrix of the system can be a challenge if one considers arbitrary shape channels. Moreover, the bottom channel slope variations depends on the erosion-deposition mechanism considered to update the channel cross-section profile. In this paper a numerical finite volume scheme is proposed, based on an augmented Roe solver (first order accurate in time and space) and dealing with solid transport flux variations caused by the channel geometry changes. Channel crosssection variations lead to the appearance of a new solid flux source term which should be discretized properly. Comparison of the numerical results for several analytical and experimental cases demonstrate the effectiveness, exact wellbalanceness and accuracy of the scheme.

In our globalised world the phenomenon of Babylonian confusion can be observed in relation to the concept of sovereignty, and the boundaries of national, European, and international law are becoming increasingly blurred. In the following, I will seek an answer to the question how the term of sovereignty is rewritten, and the scope of its interpretation expanded in our globalised and Europeanised surroundings. In this context, I will present firstly some major international and Hungarian approaches to the definition of sovereignty in modern times. Secondly, I will examine how the sovereignty of the Member States has developed in the European Union, highlighting to what extent can we talk about a sovereign energy policy of the Member States in the light of shared competences adopted in the field of energy policy. Thirdly, I will scrutinise how EU energy policy can change in the near future, and what kind of a role Member States can play in this process. As there is still no universally accepted definition of sovereignty, the role of science is essential in the conceptualisation of the term. The Treaty of Lisbon has brought a supranational turn also in the field of energy, but Member States still have a relatively wide leeway to create their own regulatory framework that takes into account their national and regional characteristics. Environmental considerations in recent years have led to the initiation of a single energy market and the creation of the European energy union that is expected to become more intense in the near future. Therefore, it is crucial for Member States, both at a national and a regional level, to be actively involved in the establishment and formulation of community law in order to be able to represent their interest effectively.

This paper presents a modal analysis solution technique for the matrix equations of motion of elastic mechanism systems including the rigid-body elastic motion coupling terms and general damping. In many cases, researchers have neglected these terms because they complicate and diminish the efficiency of the solution process. This has been justified by assuming that the terms are small and do not affect the system response. The results obtained using the techniques developed within show this is true for some, but not all mechanisms. The solution technique adds the rigid-body elastic motion coupling terms to the system mass, damping, and stiffness matrices thus allowing them to affect the system response appropriately. The resulting nonsymmetric matrices are then rewritten in first order form allowing general damping to be included in the analysis. Modal analysis techniques are utilized to solve for the steady-state response of the elastic mechanism system. Thus the methods developed in this work provide a technique for including the rigid-body elastic motion coupling terms and general damping in the equations of motion while maintaining the advantage of using efficient modal analysis techniques of finding the response of the system. A number of examples are presented that establish the validity of this approach to the solution of the matrix equations of motion for elastic mechanism systems. The results show that the rigid-body elastic motion coupling terms can become significant at higher operating speeds.

In 2017, NA62 recorded over a petabyte of raw data, collecting around a billion events per day of running. Data are collected in bursts of 3-5 seconds, producing output files of a few gigabytes. A typical run, a sequence of bursts with the same detector configuration and similar experimental conditions, contains 1500 bursts and constitutes the basic unit for offline data processing. A sample of 100 random bursts is used to make timing calibrations of all detectors, after which every burst in the run is reconstructed. Finally the reconstructed events are filtered by physics channel with an average reduction factor of 20, and data quality metrics are calculated. Initially a bespoke data processing solution was implemented using a simple finite state machine with limited production system functionality. In 2017, the ATLAS Tier-0 team offered the use of their production system, together with the necessary support. Data processing workflows were rewritten with better error-handling and I/O operations were minimised, the reconstruction software was improved and conditions data handling was changed to follow best practices suggested by the HEP Software Foundation conditions database working group. This contribution describes the experience gained in using these tools and methods for data-processing on a petabyte scale experiment.

A new radioactive liquid waste cementation facility was under commissioning recently in the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University, which is designed to simultaneously process multiple intermediate-level radioactive waste drums. Therefore, the multiple volume sources and the scattering effect becomes a key issue in its radiation protection. For this purpose, the Monte Carlo program FLUKA code and experimental measurement were both adopted. In the FLUKA simulation, five different scenarios were considered, i.e., one drum, two drums, four drums, six drums, and eight drums. For the multiple volume sources, the source subroutine code of FLUKA was rewritten to realize the sampling. The complex shielding also leads to a deep penetration problem; hence, the optimization algorithm and variance reduction techniques were adopted. During the measurement, two scenarios, outdoor and indoor, were carried out separately representing the dose field when only one drum is considered and when the scattering effect is considered. A comparison between the experiments and calculations shows very good agreement. From both of the Monte Carlo simulation and the experimental measurement, it can be drawn that, in the horizontal direction, with the increase of the drum number, the dose rate increases very little, while in the vertical direction, the increase of the dose rate is very obvious with the increase of the drum number. The complicated source term sampling methods, the optimization algorithm and variance reduction techniques, and the experimental verification can provide valuable references for the similar scattering problem in radiation protection and shielding design.

Introduction / Innovation Concept: Adverse events due to medical error are a significant source of preventable morbidity and mortality in Canada’s emergency departments. Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) was introduced in 2006 as a strategy to minimize these errors. Although these strategies have been available and widely implemented in hospitals over the last decade, the optimal method of teaching these tools and strategies has not been elucidated. Methods: We endeavoured to introduce a twelve month longitudinal TeamSTEPPS program to physicians, nurses, and allied health care professionals in a busy tertiary care hospital via a multi-pronged approach consisting of group huddles, props in the department, and several social media strategies. Dedicated observers in the emergency department recorded the use of the strategies by staff members to identify improved and sustained use of TeamSTEPPS behaviours after they were introduced. Curriculum, Tool, or Material: The program that consists of five modules to improve patient safety outcomes: Team structure; Leadership; Situation Monitoring; Mutual support; and Communication. Each module consisted of educational tools including posters in the department explaining the concepts, twice weekly department huddles to discuss the importance of the monthly topic and promote team sharing with real life examples, as well as stimulating and generating discussions around the monthly theme on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and an on-line blog). For several modules, extra prompts, such as I PASS the BATON handover cards were also provided to act as reminder visual cues. The first two modules were rolled out with on-line music videos rewritten to promote the significance of the modules. A team performance observation tool was adopted from the TeamSTEPPS program, and behaviors were evaluated and recorded under the five domains. Conclusion: Although unable to detect a meaningful difference in our pre and post-implementation observations, we present a novel approach to educating a multi-disciplinary team about TeamSTEPPS in a busy emergency department, along with the challenges encountered in this unique area of research, and recommendations for further study to interested parties. The TeamSTEPPS program likely could offer as much to the emergency department as similar programs have to the aviation industry yet it requires extensive investigation within this health care venue.

Written in the form and style of the popular “novel of circulation” (or “it-narrative”), this article examines and provides an experience of the performance practices of eighteenth-century amateur music. It tells the typically complex history of a minor hit, “Come Haste to the Wedding,” a tune that was sung in a 1760s Drury Lane pantomime, rewritten as a rondeau for London publishers, danced as a jig in Irish and Scottish halls, transcribed as a fiddle tune by a captain in the Continental Army, circulated as a flute or guitar melody as far abroad as Calcutta, and collected by a young loyalist in Charleston, South Carolina. I argue that common to all these versions—and among many similar and neglected amateur genres, including sectional variation sets and dance collections—was the practice of desultory reading. The term “desultory” itself comes from the period, and the practice suggested here extrapolates from evidence of readers' experience of approaching literature and periodicals out of order. Many musical texts asked readers to skip between pages and sections, rondeaux chief among them but also instructional treatises. Some of those same treatises, by C. P. E. Bach (1753–62) and Quantz (1752), hint at desultory reading in subtle admonitions. Through a lively engagement with period style, this article outlines a new definition of music reading informed by eighteenth-century language and practical context, a definition attuned to the ocular and physical habits of the era's most plentiful practitioners: domestic performers of domestic music.

As Michael O'Hanlon concludes in his excellent contribution to Rockets' Red Glare: “We should…get used to the debate over ballistic missile defenses. It has been around a long time, and no final resolution is imminent” (p. 132). In one sense, a review of these three recent books makes clear that many analysts had grown a bit too used to positioning themselves in terms of the 1972 ABM Treaty. Preoccupied with arguments over whether the treaty should be preserved, modified, or rewritten in light of a changing strategic and technological context, no one seemed to have anticipated that President George W. Bush would simply withdraw from it, invoking Article XV's provision that either party could withdraw if “extraordinary events related to the subject matter of this Treaty have jeopardized its supreme interests.” Even many strategic defense supporters who deemed the treaty obsolete (as Robert Joseph persuasively maintains in his contribution to Rockets' Red Glare) generally believed that it should only—and would only—be scrapped if negotiations over U.S.-proposed changes broke down. (“The Bush Administration,” surmises O'Hanlon, “will surely try very hard to amend it before going to such an extreme”) (p. 112). In the event, the president's team disavowed even the word “negotiation,” saying they were willing only to “consult” the Russians regarding the treaty's impending demise.

We use the method of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant to analyze the dynamical properties of the Mukhanov-Sasaki Hamiltonian and, following this approach, investigate whether we can obtain possible candidates for initial states in the context of inflation considering a quasi-de Sitter spacetime. Our main interest lies in the question of to which extent these already well-established methods at the classical and quantum level for finitely many degrees of freedom can be generalized to field theory. As our results show, a straightforward generalization does in general not lead to a unitary operator on Fock space that implements the corresponding time-dependent canonical transformation associated with the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant. The action of this operator can be rewritten as a time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation, where we also compare our results to already existing ones in the literature. We show that its generalization to Fock space has to be chosen appropriately in order to not violate the Shale-Stinespring condition. Furthermore, our analysis relates the Ermakov differential equation that plays the role of an auxiliary equation, whose solution is necessary to construct the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant, as well as the corresponding time-dependent canonical transformation, to the defining differential equation for adiabatic vacua. Therefore, a given solution of the Ermakov equation directly yields a full solution of the differential equation for adiabatic vacua involving no truncation at some adiabatic order. As a consequence, we can interpret our result obtained here as a kind of non-squeezed Bunch-Davies mode, where the term non-squeezed refers to a possible residual squeezing that can be involved in the unitary operator for certain choices of the Bogoliubov map.

The 2020 collapse of the global economy due to the Covid-19 pandemic has enabled us to think about long term trends and what the future could hold for our cities and regions, especially due to the climate agenda. The paper sets out the historical precedents for economic transitions after collapses that unleash new technologically based innovation waves. These are shown to be associated with different energy and infrastructure priorities and their transport and resulting urban forms. The new technologies in the past were emerging but mainstreamed as the new economy was built on new investments. The paper suggests that the new economy, for the next 30 years, is likely to be driven by the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agendas (summarised as zero carbon–zero poverty) and will have a strong base in a cluster of innovative technologies: renewable energy, electromobility, smart cities, hydrogen-based industry, circular economy technologies, and biophilic urbanism. The first three are well underway, and the other three will need interventions if not cultural changes and may miss being mainstreamed in this recovery but could still play a minor role in the new economy. The resulting urban transformations are likely to build on Covid-19 through “global localism” and could lead to five new features: (1) relocalised centres with distributed infrastructure, (2) tailored innovations in each urban fabric, (3) less car dependence, (4) symbiotic partnerships for funding, and (5) rewritten manuals for urban professionals. This period needs human creativity to play a role in revitalising the human dimension of cities. The next wave following this may be more about regenerative development.

Spontaneous collapse models and Bohmian mechanics are two different solutions to the measurement problem plaguing orthodox quantum mechanics. They have, a priori nothing in common. At a formal level, collapse models add a non-linear noise term to the Schrödinger equation, and extract definite measurement outcomes either from the wave function (e.g. mass density ontology) or the noise itself (flash ontology). Bohmian mechanics keeps the Schrödinger equation intact but uses the wave function to guide particles (or fields), which comprise the primitive ontology. Collapse models modify the predictions of orthodox quantum mechanics, whilst Bohmian mechanics can be argued to reproduce them. However, it turns out that collapse models and their primitive ontology can be exactly recast as Bohmian theories. More precisely, considering (i) a system described by a non-Markovian collapse model, and (ii) an extended system where a carefully tailored bath is added and described by Bohmian mechanics, the stochastic wave-function of the collapse model is exactly the wave-function of the original system conditioned on the Bohmian hidden variables of the bath. Further, the noise driving the collapse model is a linear functional of the Bohmian variables. The randomness that seems progressively revealed in the collapse models lies entirely in the initial conditions in the Bohmian-like theory. Our construction of the appropriate bath is not trivial and exploits an old result from the theory of open quantum systems. This reformulation of collapse models as Bohmian theories brings to the fore the question of whether there exists `unromantic' realist interpretations of quantum theory that cannot ultimately be rewritten this way, with some guiding law. It also points to important foundational differences between `true' (Markovian) collapse models and non-Markovian models.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to suggest that translating a design theory (DT) into practice (e.g. creating an instance design artifact (IDA)) is hardly straight-forward and requires substantial creativity. Specifically the authors suggest that adopting a DT embodies a creativity passdown effect in which the creative thinking of a team of design theorist(s) inherent in DT invokes a creative mind of a team of artifact instance designer(s) in creating an IDA. In this study, the authors empirically investigate the creativity passdown effect through an action case in which a DT (DT nexus) was applied in creating an IDA (multi-outsourcing decision-making tool). Design/methodology/approach – The case methodology applied here is described as an action case. An action case is a hybrid research approach that combines action research and interpretive case approaches. It combines intervention and interpretation in order to achieve both change and understanding. It is a form of soft field experiment with less emphasis on iteration and learning and more on trial and making. The approach is holistic in philosophy, and prediction is not emphasized. The intervention in the case was that of an instance designer team introducing a previously published DT as a basis for creating an IDA. Findings – The experience in the action case suggests that using a DT in creating an IDA may encourage design thinking, and in certain way increase its power and practical relevance by fostering the creative mind of instance designers. Indeed, DTs provide a scientific basis for dealing with an instance problem, and this evokes the creativity mind of instance designers. Without such a scientific basis, it is a lot more challenging for instance artifact designers to deal with instance problems. Research limitations/implications – This study contributes to the literature concerning design science research, as it challenges the notion that adopting scientific design knowledge limits creativity inherent in creating IDA by illustrating creative elements involved in adopting DT as a basis for creating IDAs. Practical implications – This study offers implications to practice, as it provides new insights regarding how DT can be used in instance design activities. Originality/value – A report of this research previously appeared as a conference paper. However, the attached journal version has been completely rewritten to additionally contribute to the literature concerning design science research beyond the conference version. More specifically, in this version, the authors conceptualize adopting a DT to build an IDA as a theoretical basis, and the authors challenge the notion that adopting scientific design knowledge limits creativity inherent in creating IDA by illustrating creative elements involved in executing DT as a basis for creating IDAs.
