Histological data concerning the structure and the topographical distribution of the eustachian tube submucosal glands is presented in 94 serially-sectioned temporal bones with and without otitis media. The vast majority of the tubal glands are located adjacent to the nasopharynx in the pharyngeal and midportion regions. Mixed glands which contain equal amounts of mucoid and serous elements are found in all age groups, in most specimens, either with or without otitis media. Furthermore, the glandular tissue, along these two medial regions of the tube, does not disclose significant quantitative differences between normal and inflamed specimens. Temporal bones without otitis media harbour few glands in the lateral four regions of the tube, while those with otitis media show a moderate increase of gland formation which is more noticeable in the pretympanum than in the regions around the isthmus (pre-isthmus, isthmus and post-isthmus regions). It is apparent that chronic inflammatory conditions like simple chronic otitis media and secretory otitis media are more often accompanied by gland formation, along the lateral four regions of the tube than acute otitis media.

This paper is a semantic study of the relationship between Korean railway station names and place names where they locate. A railway station is a transportation node that represents identity of the region. Therefore, station names are required to be symbols that represent the area. Place names are sometimes changed to match station names. Conversely, sometimes station names are changed to match the place name. The triggers include changes in administrative areas, the opening of railway lines, or movement of urban areas, administrative centers. Station names must be able to appropriately guide domestic and foreign passengers. Therefore, a high degree of publicity and public benefit are naturally required. It has nothing to do with whether the railway company is publicly owned or privately owned. Therefore, deciding on or changing station names requires the involvement of not only railway companies, but also local communities and local governments, just as with place names. Therefore, they have a very close relationship with authority. On the other hand, it must be kept in mind that public interest can easily be undermined by authority, so as not to abuse it.

Purpose To describe a patient presenting with suspected giant cell (temporal) arteritis (GCA) in whom subsequent temporal artery biopsy showed luminal narrowing by medial calcification, metaplastic ossification, and fibrointimal proliferation, consistent with calciphylaxis. Methods A 55-year-old man with end-stage renal disease presented with unilateral loss of vision and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and was initially treated as though he had GCA; however, a subsequent temporal artery biopsy showed marked luminal narrowing by medial calcification, metaplastic ossification, and fibrointimal proliferation, consistent with calciphylaxis. In addition, the tunica media of the affected artery contained multinucleate giant cells, but these represented osteoclasts and foreign body giant cells reacting to calcium, rather than a part of GCA. Results This is a rare report of metaplastic ossification and the finding of non-GCA-related giant cells in the tunica media of the temporal artery, thus representing a clinical and histopathologic mimicker of GCA. Conclusions The clinical differential diagnosis of GCA includes other etiologies that can present similarly; however, temporal artery biopsy can discern the underlying pathology. Importantly, the identification of giant cells is not required for the diagnosis of GCA, and likewise, as our case shows, the finding of giant cells in the wall of a temporal artery does not always imply a diagnosis of GCA.

With the emergence of mobile Internet and social media, human relationship has evolved into a new form due to the much broader reach and more efficient communications enabled by information technology. This paper examines the communication pattern and impact on social group in the context of a Chinese popular mobile social media app. It analyzes a dataset that comprised of the information about sending and receiving messages by 10,000 users over one month period. It found a strong temporal pattern of a significant difference between Monday and other days: the least frequent usages on Monday among the week. The average number of friends a user has messaging contacts with is about 2, far less than the number of friends a user has in total, which can reflect the attributes of users maintaining their social network and friendship.

AbstractNot only the postmodern era is characterized by manifold, contradictory, and hybrid temporalities. Earlier epochs were already marked by temporal and medial pluralities. Examining these pluralities expands both our knowledge of the past and of the present. The 15th and 16th centuries are particularly suitable for this. This period sees not only spatial expansion, religious diversification and media restructuring. It also sees temporal changes: a growing presence of measured time, rigorous time management, and the formation of a notion of time independent from the Aristotelian tradition. In particular, literature and the arts – in new media forms – explore the whole range of temporal semantics and dynamics, and play their part in pluralizing and hybridizing the idea of time, largely shaped by Christian models of salvation history.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial cholesteatoma is uncommon about 0.2–1.8% of all tumor lesions, composed of desquamated debris lined by keratinized squamous epithelium, divided into congenital and acquired. Congenital cholesteatoma occurred early, while acquired cholesteatoma associated with otitis media. CASE REPORT: Case-1 18-year-old male with 2 years recurrent seizures, 2 times per week, lasted 1–3 min, headache, left-sided hemiparesis, and right-sided hearing impairment at 10 years from chronic suppurative otitis media at 5 years old. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination revealed a mass on the right temporal base measured 5.8 × 6.2 mm. Surgery was done, histopathology revealed cholesteatoma. Two weeks post-operative, normal motoric with no seizures. Case-2 45-year-old male, complaining motor aphasia for 2 years, hemiparesis for 1 year, seizures in a month, headache, and impairment of left-sided hearing. MRI examination revealed a large mass at the left temporal. Surgery was done, histopathology revealed cholesteatoma. Five days post-operative, the patient talked in slow speech and normal function achieved a month after. Cholesteatoma is a rare benign lesion, described as misplaced skin, divided into intracranial, the external auditory canal and otitis media, found commonly at the frontal or temporal bone. Infection of Streptococcus spp., MRSA, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is common. In our case, no positive culture was found. Commonly has good surgical prognosis, neurological deficit, otorrhea, tumor recurrence, and infection was not found on our yearly follow-up. CONCLUSION: Cholesteatoma, as a non-invasive lesion compared to other intradural lesions, presents with atypical symptoms, signs, and images.

Most citizens in modern liberal democracies regularly consume news media content to inform themselves about current affairs. Thus, content analysis of news and opinion articles from popular media outlets can provide rich insight about the cultural milieu where such textual artifacts originated. Combining computational tools for content analysis with human led finesse can help an analyst exploit the capabilities of scalable computational methods while also leveraging human skills and expertise to guide the analysis. This work introduces an online tool, the http://media-analytics.org website, that empowers researchers by providing modern analytics tools to study language usage in textual content from news and opinion articles of major media outlets. Due to the diachronic nature of news articles, the Media-Analytics.org website allows the exploration of temporal dynamics in word frequency usage and strength of association between word pairs. It is the hope of the author that these tools can help other researchers gain insights about the temporal flux in language usage by major news media organizations.

Abstract Reservoir computing is a versatile approach for implementing physically Recurrent Neural networks which take advantage of a reservoir, consisting of a set of interconnected neurons with temporal dynamics, whose weights and biases are fixed and do not need to be optimized. Instead, the training takes place only at the output layer towards a specific task. One important requirement for these systems to work is nonlinearity, which in optical setups is usually obtained via the saturation of the detection device. In this work, we explore a distinct approach using a photorefractive crystal as the source of the nonlinearity in the reservoir. Furthermore, by leveraging on the time response of the photorefractive media, one can also have the temporal interaction required for such architecture. If we space out in time the propagation of different states, the temporal interaction is lost, and the system can work as an extreme learning machine. This corresponds to a physical implementation of a Feed-Forward Neural Network with a single hidden layer and fixed random weights and biases. Some preliminary results are presented and discussed.

Objectives Otitis media causes labyrinthine changes and subsequent sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of this histopathologic study was to evaluate the extension of inflammation to the inner ear and its effects. Methods Out of 614 temporal bones with otitis media, 47 (30 cases) with chronic and 35 (21 cases) with purulent were selected for histopathologic study. Subjects with a history of acoustic trauma, head trauma, ototoxic drugs and other otologic and systemic diseases affecting the inner ear were excluded. The pattern of labyrinthine inflammation was classified as localized purulent, localized serous, generalized seropurulent and generalized serous. Inner ear findings were compared to age-matched controls. Results 19% of temporal bones with chronic and 9% of temporal bones with purulent otitis media showed labyrinthine inflammatory changes. In chronic otitis media, inflammatory changes were: 56% localized purulent; 22% localized serous; 11% generalized seropurulent; and 11% generalized serous. Inflammatory changes in temporal bones with purulent otitis media included: 67% localized purulent; and 33% generalized seropurulent. Pathological findings included: serofibrinous precipitates and inflammatory cells in the scala tympani of basal turn and cochlear aqueduct; significant decrease in area of stria vascularis (p = 0.033); and loss of hair cells in the organs of Corti. No significant difference was found in area of spiral ligament area or number of fibrocytes in diseased and control bones. Conclusions Middle ear/inner ear interaction in otitis media can result in labyrinthine inflammation and cochlear damage. Early diagnosis and treatment of otitis media is important in preventing inner ear damage.

Social Medias these days have become the instant communication platform to share anything; from personal feelings to the matter of public concern, these are the easiest and aphoristic way to deliver information among the mass. With the development of Web 2.0 technologies, more and more emphasis has been given to user input in the web; the concept of Geoweb is being visualized and in the recent years, social media like Twitter, Flicker are among the popular Location Based Social Medias with locational functionality enabled in them. Nepal faced devastating earthquake on 25 April, 2015 resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, destruction in the historical-archaeological sites and properties. Instant help was offered by many countries around the globe and even lots of NGOs, INGOs and people started the rescue operations immediately; concerned authorities and people used different communication medium like Frequency Modulation Stations, Television, and Social Medias over the World Wide Web to gather information associated with the Quake and to ease the rescue activities. In this article, Evelyn Ficarra considers her compositional practice, giving particular emphasis to the techniques and aesthetics of using time-lapse media and other temporal manipulations in interdisciplinary contexts. Foregrounding her collaboration with media artist Ian Winters on the large-scale interdisciplinary installation/performance Summer, Winter, Spring, Ficarra describes her attempt to model audio-temporal methods on techniques borrowed from the visual realm. She considers temporal compression, extension and layering as compositional tools, highlighting issues of scale, structure and experience, and suggests that radical temporal manipulations of material can serve to bridge referential and abstract sound worlds. Ficarra concludes with reflections on the meanings and poetic resonances of time-lapse media.

Past research has shown that culture can form and shape our temporal orientation–the relative emphasis on the past, present, or future. However, there are mixed findings on how temporal orientations vary between North American and East Asian cultures due to the limitations of survey methodology and sampling. In this study, we applied an inductive approach and leveraged big data and natural language processing between two popular social media platforms–Twitter and Weibo–to assess the similarities and differences in temporal orientation in the United States of America and China, respectively. We first established predictive models from annotation data and used them to classify a larger set of English Twitter sentences (NTW = 1,549,136) and a larger set of Chinese Weibo sentences (NWB = 95,181) into four temporal catetories–past, future, atemporal present, and temporal present. Results show that there is no significant difference between Twitter and Weibo on past or future orientations; the large temporal orientation difference between North Americans and Chinese derives from their different prevailing focus on atemporal (e.g., facts, ideas) present (Twitter) or temporal present (e.g., the “here” and “now”) (Weibo). Our findings contribute to the debate on cultural differences in temporal orientations with new perspectives following a new methodological approach. The study’s implications call for a reevaluation of how temporal orientation is measured in cross-cultural studies, emphasizing the use of large-scale language data and acknowledging the atemporal present category. Understanding temporal orientations can guide effective cross-cultural communication strategies to tailor approaches for different audience based on temporal orientations, enhancing intercultural understanding and engagement.

Aim. To study the role of oxidative protein modification of bone tissue proteins in the formation of destruction of temporal bone structures in chronic otitis media. Methods. The study included 139 patients aged 16-75 years with a verified diagnosis of chronic otitis media, who are candidates for surgical treatment. Depending on the method of surgical treatment, patients are divided into four groups (by nosology and complications and reoperations): patients with tubotympanic otitis media and epitympanic antral otitis, without complications and with local or intracranial complications, after reconstructive sanitizing ear surgery. The state of the processes of oxidative modification of proteins was evaluated in the bone tissue of the middle ear cavities, obtained intraoperatively, by the content of carbonyl products with the use of spectrophotometry. The data were processed by descriptive statistics and were presented in the form of a median and a range between quartiles with an estimate of the reliability of the intergroup differences by the Mann-Whitney U-criterion. Results. A comparison of the indicators characterizing the oxidative modification of bone tissue proteins of the temporal bone in patients with complicated and recurrent forms of chronic otitis media demonstrates a greater degree of free radical destruction of proteins, primarily markers of early stages of protein damage and an increase of aldehyde products, both at the basal level and in response to induction in a complicated course of the disease. Conclusion. The obtained data allow drawing a conclusion about a high level of oxidative stress in bone tissue in destructive forms of chronic otitis media accompanied by relapses and complications, and about the perspectives of antioxidant pre-operative use taking into account the features of oxidative stress in bone tissue in patients with chronic otitis media.

Data available on the characteristics of all Australian homicides over ten years since mid 1989 provide an opportunity to investigate whether child homicide is subject to temporal clustering. If this were found to be the case, then contagion resulting from media publicity might be a possible explanation. This follows from studies indicating some influence from media publicity given to suicides. No temporal clustering could be detected and results indicate that any given child homicide in Australia has no effect on the subsequent rate of child homicides. The study suggests that caution is needed before assuming that proximate events are necessarily related. It remains a possibility that child homicide may be the product of contagion over a longer time frame, as a consequence of intense media publicity given to high profile events. The media should respect community sensibilities in reporting such events and avoid sensational coverage in an ethical and balanced way.

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to hence the quest for an understanding of the theoretical and empirical foundations of studies of social media within Dentistry Science. In particular, it has been sought to identify the temporal and thematic behaviors of studies concerning social media in Dentistry. Methods It involves an exploratory study of the bibliometrics and scientometrics, using a quali-quantitative approach. The universe is made up of the scientific production concerning the social media contained in articles related to the area, indexed in the Web of Science. In order to understand the objects of the studies identified, content analysis was employed. Results The results enabled us to map the profile of the temporal and thematic behavior of the studies developed, localizing the period of publication, areas of knowledge with production that is related to Dentistry Science and the issues occurring most frequently. Conclusion Given the complexity of the topic, a more profound epistemological and pragmatic approach is envisioned for future production.

Multimedia authoring tool serves to facilitate an author to create multimedia presentations. Multimedia authoring tool will convert the multimedia presentation into a document. Mobile devices with different screen sizes that can cause visual media to overlap are called Spatio-temporal conflict. The process in the multimedia authoring tool involves a Spatio-temporal verification process to detect Spatio-temporal conflicts. This study proposes a method for correcting the conflict using a conflict region detection process, Spatio-temporal verification, and auto-correction. The auto-correction method uses two stages of area relocation for vertical conflict and horizontal conflict. The two stages are repeated for the ability to correct up to four conflicting regions. Visual media objects such as overlapping images and videos were successfully separated into non-overlapping media objects. The proposed method succeeded in separating the four media objects that were previously overlapping.

Social networking website creates new ways for engaging people belonging to different communities, moral and social values to communicate and share valuable knowledge, therefore creating a large amount of data. The importance of mining social media cannot be over emphasized, due to significant information that are revealed which can be applied in different areas. In this paper, a systematic approach for traversing the content of weblog, considering location and time (spatiotemporal) is proposed. The proposed model is capable of searching for subjects in social media using Boyer Moore Horspool (BMH) algorithm with respect to location and time. BMH is an efficient string searching algorithm, where the search is done in such a way that every character in the text needs not to be checked and some characters can be skipped without missing the subject occurrence. Semantic analysis was carried out on the subject by computing the mean occurrence of the subject with the corresponding predicate and object from the total occurrence of the subject. Experiments were carried out on two datasets: the first category was crawled from twitter website from September to October 2014 and the second category was obtained from spinn3r data set made available through the International AAAI (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence) Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM). The results obtained from tracking some subjects such as Islam and Obama shows that the mean occurrence of the analysis of the subject successfully reveals the pattern of the subject over a period of time for a specific location. Evaluation of the system which is based on performance and functionality reveals that the model performs better than some baseline models. The proposed model is capable of revealing spatiotemporal pattern for a subject, and can be applied in any area where spatiotemporal factor is to be considered.

Digital media is not a remedy for excessive consumption and environmental damage; the seemingly reduced impacts on the environment by the pandemic are on the ground of accelerating other modes of consumption, resource exploitation and capitalist investments. In this article, I would take China for a case to reveal the ephemeral ecology and the perpetual consumption on digital platforms in a singular future.
