Повний текст джерелаSince the inception of the University in 1960 under the Apartheid regime and up until a few years ago Afrikaans had dominated both as educational and as communication medium. However, political change - at the University and in South Africa - has brought about a change in language patterns. According to the HSRC Work Committee on Languages and Language Instruction (1981), a high percentage (40%) of Afrikaans-speaking people classified as coloured and living in the Cape Peninsula choose English as the medium of instruction and also regard it as the most important language to be learnt at schools (also 40%). As a result of this, and the enrolment of a large percentage of Xhosa speaking students, who generally prefer English to Afrikaans as an educational medium, English has become the language most commonly used both inside and outside the classroom. The homogeneity of preference has, however, not been matched by mastery of the language. For approximately 70% of all first-year students English is a second or even a third language. Though University entry is based on at least ten years of the study of English, standards of proficiency differ quite considerably as a result of inequalities in education. Because students need to improve their level of English proficiency I investigated the effectiveness of using senior students as tutor assistants in an academic development programme, the English Special Project, at UWC. This study aims at revealing that the tutor assistantships in the English Special Project can alleviate problems that occur with annual increases in student numbers under certain conditions. These are that: 1 prospective tutor assistants undergo proper tutor assistant training; 2 tutor assistants are committed to the course of academic development; 3 tutor assistants have the time available that is necessary for the task. In Chapter 1 give an insight into what this study is about, the reasons for conducting it and what my personal involvement with the ESP has been. In Chapter 2 I review some of the overseas and local literature on TA systems. In Chapter 3 I describe a case-study to evaluate the success of the TA system in the ESP with reference to academic development. I emphasize the intensive, individual care of and attention to first-year students. In an attempt to address the problem, the effectiveness of senior students as tutor assistants to assist in tutorial sessions is described. In Chapter 4 I discuss the value of TA intervention in the ESP at personal and social levels. Chapter 5 contains the general conclusions and my recommendations to improve the ESP.

Nowadays, Braille book is the main math learning tools for visually impaired students in school for the Blind, who can’t understand mathematical essence by using current aids, they obtain mathematics knowledge by rote. The main aim of this research is to let the Blinds to gain a more in-depth understanding of the Sine and Cosine Rules in Trigonometry after teaching them by math aids that researcher develop by self. In the course of events, reflecting teaching, modifing the aids and making more useful aids, hoping that math teachers in the Blind school or in the resource classrooms can use these aids to teach the Visually Impaired. Research objects are two blind students of 10th grades’ with single type of disabilities. In this research, single group quasi-experimental study design is employed. As a consequence of this study, it’s useful to blind who learns mathematics by derivation that using geometric figures to teach Trigonometric Identities, but for the blind who learning math only depending on memory, need to change this learning mode to make sense of mathematical theorems.
Sephoto, Sibongile Annah Khethiwe. "Exploring the effectiveness of the teaching strategies that technology teachers apply to teach the design process." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2324.
Повний текст джерелаTechnology education was introduced in the South African curriculum by the Department of Basic Education with the intention of developing learners’ design skills while using the design process. Since the introduction of technology education, the South African curriculum has undergone a series of curriculum changes. Teachers were introduced to Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), the Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS), the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) and now the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). These changes compelled South African teachers to shift from a teacher-centred approach to that of a learner-centred approach. In the RNCS, the design process was presented as a linear process, whereas in the CAPS document, the design process has been represented as non-linear. This change has led to uncertainties amongst technology teachers on how to teach the design process. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of the teaching strategies that technology teachers apply when teaching the design process. The CAPS document for technology stipulates that technology should give learners an opportunity to develop and apply specific design skills to solve technological problems in real situations. To solve such problems, learners should be exposed to a problem and then engage in a systematic process that allows them to develop solutions to the problem. The theoretical framework used in this study was based on social constructivism. This theory was used based on the fact that it describes how learning occurs and puts emphasis on how learners construct their own understanding in a social context. This social constructivism was linked to the design process skills required to demonstrate the way in which the teaching and learning of the design process could be directed. The design process is seen as the backbone of technology and should be used to teach technology, it seems that teachers are struggling to use the design process in teaching technology. The literature revealed that teachers’ lack of knowledge in technology has an effect on how they use various teaching strategies to teach the design process. This is challenging and a reason for unease, therefore this study needed to explore this problem. The study engaged in qualitative research using a case study design. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants, who comprised technology teachers who obtained anAdvanced Certificate in Education majoring in technology with at least six years of experience in teaching technology. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and observations, and were analysed using Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge. The study revealed that only in exceptional cases were technology teachers using problem-solving to teach the design process. It was also revealed that technology teachers have difficulties with regard to PCK. The sampled teachers were also unable to support learners to acquire design skills such as investigation, designing, making, evaluation and communication. The observations indicated that the participants did not engage with the design process as set out in the CAPS document for technology. The implication of this study is that understanding the content and how to teach it is essential in teaching and learning situations. There should be ongoing professional development programmes to assist technology teachers. This study recommends that there should be repeated in-service training of technology teachers to address the issue of concern in teaching the design process. Teachers should be encouraged to attend such in-service training. The in-service training should also focus on teaching technology using the design process. Furthermore, technology teachers should encourage effective group-work in problem solving so that every member of the group has a role to play.

Abstract One of the most common dialogues is the one-on-one dialogue design, in which a teacher agent and a student engage in dialogues and learning. This study attempts to include a student agent, design a dual-agent interactive tutor system, and to enrich the content of the dialogue. Researchers hope to gradually guide students to participate in learning through dialogue, so that technology can be integrated into the curriculum and thereby enhancing learning effectiveness. In this study, the teaching system called “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” developed and set up by Professor Kuo, Bor-Chen and his team of the National Institute of Education Information and Testing Statistics at the National Taichung University of Education. Utilizing the Pythagorean Theorem as an example, the outline of the syllabus and types of mistakes are analyzed to develop the dialogue and teaching of this “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” according to Van Hiele’s geometric concepts and learning theory for junior high school students. Through this system, students can effectively understand the Pythagorean Theory and its application. The “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” includes domain model, student model, teaching model, and interface model. The extension of the five concepts of knowledge associated with the Pythagorean Theorem in the domain model is defined by domain-experts. In the student model, through the reaction of students’ responses to the reorganization of the incorrect type of questions and the analysis of misconception, the feedback mechanism to be given by the students in learning the Pythagorean Theorem is constructed. In the teaching model, the outer loop and inner loop respectively guide the teaching process. The outer loop takes the five concepts of knowledge as the order of teaching. The inner loop takes each concept of knowledge and extends it into one-on-two dialogs guiding students to learn step by step. In the interface model, the integration of a graphical user interface, a dialogue to guide students to learn step by step through their responses give encouragement or prompt feedback. The purpose of this study is to understand the learning effectiveness of the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” applied to remedial teaching of the Pythgorean Theorem and to conduct a teaching experiment with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest design quasi-experimental research method. The study found that using the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” applied to remedial teaching of the Pythagorean Theorem can effectively improve the learning outcomes of students. The effectiveness of remedial teaching using the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” was significantly better than that of traditional class teaching. Students and teachers both positively affirm that the “dual agent intelligent auto tutor” can enhance learning effectiveness and allow students to learn adaptively.

Obesity is one of the important issues in public health, as it is a major cause for people's health in its association with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome not only increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but also increases mortality. High technology industry is capital-intensive, highly competitive, high demanding of innovative developments, and high knowledge and labor intensity. In such a particular working environment, employees are prone to developing obesity and symptoms of metabolic syndrome under insufficient exercise opportunity. In this study, a health promotion program was implemented among overweight employees in the high-tech industry in Taiwan. The effectiveness of such interventions on the anthropometrical changes was examined. A total of 177 overweight employees with BMI ≧ 23Kg/m2 was voluntarily recruited in the health promotion program. Among them, 128 participants were classified into exercise group (1 to 3-month intervention of purely exercise) while 49 participants were categorized into education with exercise group (3-month intervention of both exercise and health education programs and nutrition counseling). In addition to anthropometrics, the participant’s health knowledge, attitudes, and behavior changes were also evaluated. The results have shown that 76.7% of the overweight subjects were defined as obesity (BMI≧27 kg/m2 ). Males were found to have 83.9% (waist>90cm) central obesity condition and 68.3% females (waist>80cm) were counted as the same condition, amongst 35% had already developed metabolic syndrome. General improvements were observed in health knowledge, attitude, and eating behavior, however only eating behavior was statistically significant. Among body measures, weight, BMI, and waist circumference were decreased significantly after intervention. More improvements were found in the education with exercise group as opposed to the exercise group. In terms of the physiological indicators, higher HDL and lowered diastolic blood pressure, LDL, preprandial blood sugar level, and triglyceride were observed after intervention. Diastolic blood pressure and HDL were founs as the most significant indicators as changes by intervantions particularly in the education with exercise group. Waist circumference reduction had more significant effect on changes of physiological indicators while comparing with weight loss. This study found that interventions by exercise and health education combination could greatly improve body size and metabolic syndrome-related physiological indicators. As a result, health awareness and continuous activities in health promotion are suggested for workplace health practitioners.

The study represents excellent validity and reliability, for the results are shown that Cronbach α and CR are above 0.8, AVE and SMC are both above 0.5, and factor loading is above 0.7, and reached significance level. In aspect of goodness of fit, = 2.882, RMSEA = 0.07, RMR=0.103, GFI=0.848, AGFI=0.816, CFI=0.928, IFI=0.928 and NFI=0.894 provide good explanatory power in this study. The major results and findings are represented as following, 1. Learning attitude and training needs affect directly training effectiveness, so while the high-tech industries conduct education and training, they must heed state of employee’ attitude and training needs level, which promote level of training effectiveness. 2. Effectiveness assessment of Four level in Kirkpatrick model are included reaction level, learning level, behavior level, and result level. In six relations, the other five responsive relation all reach significant level except for that reaction level are ineffective of result level. Therefore, to conduct education and training need to care for trainee’ satisfication, absorbability, change degree, and etc. in that promote educational training effectiveness. 3. In effectiveness evaluation model of education and training built in the study, the integrated indicator of goodness of fit included absolute indicator, Relative indicator, and simple indicator reach standard value. Therefore, while high-tech industries evaluate effectiveness of education and training, they can apply the model in evaluation. 4. At variables of sex correspond to effectiveness evaluation of education and training, the study use method of loose replication strategy and moderate replication strategy to analyze twenty one multi-groups appraisal items . the result is shown that male and female group data are no difference, so educational training needs not to consider sex differences.

The shift from a product-based to a knowledge-based economy has resulted in an increasing demand for organizations to implement knowledge management systems (KMS) at an accelerating pace. However, factors influencing the employee satisfaction with KMS, i.e. one surrogate measure of information system (IS) success/effectiveness, have seldom empirically examined by prior researches, particularly how knowledge map and personalization influencing employee satisfaction with KMS. Results from a sample of 133 employees mostly from four international high-tech manufacturing companies in the Hsin-Chu Science-based Industrial Parks in Taiwan strongly support a more comprehensive understanding in explaining employee satisfaction with KMS. The result shows KMS with a higher level of knowledge map and personalization will satisfy employees through increasing perceptions of ease of use and usefulness with KMS. Our findings could be possibly applied for investigating the related issues regarding the successful implementation of KMS for researchers and practitioners. Based on these findings, we propose some managerial implications for practitioners to improve KMS effectiveness through reinforcing the knowledge map and personalization functions of KMS.

The high employment-rotating rate in high-tech industry recently has made the need for skillful manpower becoming urgent. The operating environment of high-tech industry has switched from business competition to intelligence competition. Therefore, the importance of education and training for high-tech personnel could not be stressed enough and it has the entire industry concerned. It is learned from the study that high-tech industry has already possessed thorough education and training measures with plan in place. Moreover, the concept of “manpower is the main source of industry” is well accepted in the industry. In terms of education and training effect, trainee’s opinions on and satisfaction with the course, teaching material, instructor, and site are evaluated. In general, high-tech industry has failed to evaluate the improvement of trainee in knowledge and technique or the effect of trainee’s applying education and training at work. Therefore, case study is used in this research to understand the satisfaction of trainee, the effect of education and training program, and the application of education and training received. It is also the idea to understand how departmental director view the effect of education and training given. The purpose of the study is to: 1. Analyze the impact of employee’s personality on the effect of education and training (satisfaction with education and training, personal improvement, and job performance). 2. Analyze the impact of personnel from different department on the effect of education and training. 3. Study the correlation of “satisfaction with education and training” and “personal improvement,” with “job performance.” 4. Analyze the viewpoint of each departmental director on the effect of education and training. 5. Study the correlation of employee’s education and training with integrated job performance. 6. Give meaningful suggestions on the education and training of the industry through analysis for future reference. A case study is made to be the matrix of the research. A survey is performed on the directors and employees of a company. The questionnaires distributed and collected are analyzed statistically to find out the common factor through Factory Analysis, also, to analyze the difference among variables through One Way Analysis of Variance and Post Hoc Duncan’s Multiple-Range Comparison. The correlation of “training satisfaction” and “training effect” with “training application” in the questionnaires is established through Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Analysis. The correlation of integrated training effects in the questionnaires designed for directors is studied as well. Conclusions of the study are reached as the follows: 1. Personality does affect the effect of education and training. 2. The combination of training courses and job responsibility of employee does affect the effect of education and training. 3. There is a positive correlation among “satisfaction with education and training,” “personal improvement,” and “job performance.” 4. Employee’s education and training has indeed improved organizational productivity and profitability. 5. Employee’s education and training does have a positive and substantial effect. 6. There is still room for improvement for the education and training of employees. Substantiate suggestions for employee’s education and training that are based on the study result are made available to individual organization and entire industry for future reference.

Taiwan is encountering the situation of re-positioning due to globalization and the emergence of China. The economic development and core values of Taiwan shifted to technology with accumulated knowledge for further development and innovation, after traditional labor-intensive industry moved to Western Taiwan. Technology lies at the core of the intellectual economy and the human resources of the industry shall become the developmental basis of the competition between Taiwan and the world. The leaders in the technology industry will enhance the effectiveness of the research & development (“R&D”) talents in a proactive manner as Taiwan is deeply engaged in R&D and innovation. The principal communication targets of R&D staff are machines and equipment and hence the characters of the R&D staff are distinct from that of other staff with different types of work. The R&D staff receives more work stress due to the limited time period and the presence of a bottleneck in technology. Therefore, this research mainly discusses if transactional leadership, with reciprocal and definite short-term objectives, influences the organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behavior in relation to effectiveness, and investigates if work stress influences the relationship between transactional leadership and the effectiveness of the staff. Convenience sampling was employed for this research and the R&D staff from the technology sector has been selected as the targets. A total of 570 questionnaires were distributed, of which 167 valid questionnaires were returned. The return rate of valid questionnaires was 29.3%. The research results obtained from empirical analysis are set out below:- 1.The R&D staff will demonstrate continued commitment, but a relatively low level of commitment when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 2.The R&D staff will demonstrate organizational identity, and a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 3.The R&D staff will provide assistance to the colleagues, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 4.The R&D staff will avoid disturbance and the pursuit of benefits, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 5.The R&D staff will demonstrate the separation of business from private affairs, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 6.The R&D staff will demonstrate self-actualization, which is a relatively high level of organizational citizenship behavior when the R&D staff is informed of the transactional leadership of the leaders. 7.Work stress will strengthen the negative impacts of transactional leadership which is informed to the staff and the organizational citizenship behavior. The above-mentioned results review that long-term and enthusiastic commitment to the organization from R&D staff was more unlikely to be acquired with transactional leadership. However, transactional leadership, which defines clear objectives and provides satisfaction to R&D staff upon the accomplishment of the objectives, allows the R&D staff to provide immediate positive feedback via organizational citizenship behavior. Nonetheless, negative impacts will be produced with increased work stress. Hence, the leadership style of the leaders must be amended in accordance with various people and situations and must adapt to moderate adjustments or transform the work stress to enhance the effectiveness of the staff.

Knowledge management on the basis of contemporary organizational theory has its important research orientations for the business sector as well as the management academic sector. It is the same as competitive superiority in the business. Sveiby considers that one of the contemporary brand new academic viewpoints is to have an organization operate by a method of better-structured knowledge management. It can be seen as a result from the awareness of the importance of knowledge management by contemporary organizations, gathering strength in the promotion of knowledge management movement. The viewpoints of “knowledge worker,” so-called by Drucker, and “expert labor,” so-called by Hull, both point to the importance of knowledge management and suggest that how to attain knowledge management effectiveness in an organization be further discussed. Thus, Van Krough, Ichijo & Nonaka explore how members in an organization can effectively accomplish the purpose of knowledge management in the process of its promotion of knowledge management. In other words, the consistence of an organization in knowledge management procedures and effectiveness comes as the most crucial factor for success. However, so far only scholars Sveiby and Becerra-Fernandez & Sabherwal have developed inventories and few researches have shown clear procedures or methods to explain how an organization can use a set of deliberate and accurate standards to measure its effectiveness after it has effectively enforced those knowledge management activities. In light of the aforementioned, this study was intended to explore high-tech businesses in our country from the viewpoint of knowledge worker with in-depth interviews and empirical surveys to develop a model for the measurement of knowledge management effectiveness for high-tech businesses in our country. Initially, this study came up with presuppositions from literature review and research propositions on Taiwan’s high-tech business management through in-depth interviews. In a further step it constructed business knowledge management activities and effectiveness by the method of expert consultation to develop an inventory. After investigations, empirical analysis, research presuppositions and propositions were compared. In empirical research, knowledge workers such as knowledge managers, knowledge engineers and knowledge performers in relevant departments of knowledge management in Taiwan’s high-tech businesses have been treated as subjects. With the assistance of the founders and gardeners of “Hsinchu Science Hope Park” and “Tainan Science Hope Park”, the researchers confirmed the identities of the subjects. A total of 300 copies of questionnaire have been sent out with 222 valid copies returned. The study found that business knowledge management activities and effectiveness vary from knowledge workers with different personal background and organizational structures. It also came to a further conclusion that organizational knowledge management activities have impacts to certain extend on knowledge management effectiveness. Though research propositions indicate that knowledge management effectiveness may feed back and affect its activities, it needs to be further verified through follow-up empirical researches. Therefore, this study is expected to construct and verify a model of indicators for the measurement of knowledge management activities and effectiveness as a reference for the academic circle and the business sector.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current implementation of training and development in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park, to evaluate the reaction level of training results, and to assess training needs in the future. Moreover, the suggestions regarding some critical training issues were provided for corporations in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park. The framework of this study includes training needs assessment, competence assessment which was adopted from McGehee & Thayer’s study (1961), and training evaluation which was adopted from Kirkpatrick’s study (1994). Literature reviews, qualitative research method, and questionnaire survey were employed in this study. Naturalistic inquiry was conducted to analyze qualitative data. The descriptive statistics, MANOVA, paired-sample T test, and non-parameter tests were used to analyze the quantitative data. According to the conclusion, it was found that over half of the corporations in Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park have comprehensive resource for employees’ training and development. During the planning phase of training, task analysis, organization analysis, individual analysis, and competence analysis need to be conducted. After implementing the training programs, the training results need to be evaluated. The results of this study also show that in-site lecturers and apprenticeship training programs are widely used in the high-tech companies. Most of e-learning program were applied to executive training programs; however, it wasn’t widely implemented in the corporations. Suggestions for the study implied that training budget should be adjusted in according with the organizational needs. The training programs should be focused on executive development. It is also suggest that in-house training and external training could be implemented to develop employees’ professional knowledge, skills, interpersonal skills, and foreign language abilities. Training programs which combined with virtual and substantial training could be used to substitute for 25%~50% substantial training programs.

“Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development” (OECD) released a “Knowledge-Based Economy Report” in 1996, stating that knowledge-based economy would change the style of economic development around the world; knowledge has become the major impetus of productivity and economic growth. Since high-tech industries are becoming highly specialized in their division of labor, product life is rapidly decreasing (Fine, 2000). For sustainable survival and development, enterprises must manage and apply their core knowledge effectively, and launch new products or develop new ideas continually. At the same time, they need to cultivate a suitable type of business culture and character, so that the results of innovation become the central corporate competitive edge (Stewart, 1997). This is the pressing topic that Taiwanese high-tech firms are facing today. Therefore, this study constructed an objective, precise and reliable『Knowledge Management Performance Scale for Taiwanese High-tech firms』(Research I) through literature review and consultation with experts, and combining qualitative and quantitative methods (Fuzzy Delphi Method, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Method). In addition, the self-developed Knowledge Management Effectiveness Scale for Taiwanese High-tech Firms was integrated with scales of other variables such as organizational innovation, business culture and business core competence (Research II). And the questionnaire was administered to Taiwanese high-tech firms; 900 questionnaires were sent out by a stratified sampling method, and 170 valid responses were received. The valid response rate was 18.89%. Then canonical correlation analysis, regression analysis and Linear Structure Relation (LISREL) were used to validate the hypotheses of this study and their relevance to the theoretical model. According to the result of analysis, it is found that the theoretical model used in this study is highly relevant, and knowledge management effectiveness has significant positive impact on organizational innovation, business culture and business core competence; organizational innovation also has significant positive impact on business culture and business core competence; and similarly, business culture has significant positive impact on business core competence. Moreover, knowledge management effectiveness may exert indirect effect on business core competence via organizational innovation and busuness culture; and organizational innovation has indirect effect on business core competence via business culture. Finally, in-depth discussion is made on the conclusion and practical implications of this study, and specific contributions of the study are presented. Recommendations are made on management practices and the direction for future research, and provided as references to the industry and academia.
