Introduction: Sneha kalpana (oleaginous preparations) is commonly prescribed Ayurvedic dosage form and it is the preparation of various kinds of medicated oils and ghee. Karaviradya taila is medicated oil preparation used externally in the form of abhyanga (massage) for lomashatana (depilation). Objectives: To prepare and carry out the physico-chemical analysis of karaviradya taila. Materials and Methods: Karaviradya taila was prepared by general method of taila kalpana i.e ¼:1:4 and analytical study like organoleptic characters and physico- chemical parameters were carried out based on the references available in the laboratory guide for the analysis of Ayurveda and Siddha formulation. Results and Discussion: The total oil obtained was 85% and the loss was 15%. Organoleptic characters of karaviradya taila showed translucent green viscous liquid with alkaline odor, Physico- chemical parameters like pH, specific gravity, viscosity, total suspended solids, and refractive index were tested. The increased Saponification value of karaviradya taila indicates the rate of absorption, low acid value of karaviradya taila indicates less chance of decomposition of taila. Evaporation of moisture contents in karaviradya taila leads to the decrease in rancidity factors. Peroxide value and iodine value of karaviradya taila indicates the primary oxidation. Conclusion: Karaviradya taila is a sneha kalpana mainly indicated for loma shatana (depilation). Local applications is beneficial because they are quickly absorbable, protect the skin and promotes percutaneous absorption of incorporated drug. The results of pharmaceutical and analytical study of karaviradya taila can be considered as the preliminary standards for the preparation of karaviradya taila. Sahasrayoga is a popular book on the Keraleeya tradition of Ayurvedic treatment. Sahasrayogam means one thousand formulations and on a rough estimate, it appears that the number of formulations varies from 700 to 1200 in various versions. It also appears that the number of formulations has been added periodically to the original text based on their practical experiences, which increased the total number of formulations. Mutta Taila is an Ayurvedic medicated oil mentioned in classical text Sahasrayoga in which the ingredients are egg yolks, Kumari and Nimba Taila. It is also mentioned in Siddha medicine in the name of Anda Taila by Abdulla Sahib’s Anubhava Vaidhya Navaneedham. This preparation is used in the treatment of Sanniroga (Delirium), fever with sluggishness, convulsions, and paralysis in children. It is also indicated in cerebral palsy. In the present study, a step is made to do the pharmaceutical preparation of Mutta Taila. An attempt has been made to do the pharmaceutical study of Mutta Taila. Mutta Taila was prepared as per the traditional method and evaluated for its organoleptic characteristics. The final product of Mutta Taila was having the desired consistency and quality. The yield of Mutta Taila was less with more quantity of egg yolks. The importance of adding Nimba Taila in the process of Mutta Taila preparation was discussed. In the present study, the detailed pharmaceutical process of Mutta Taila preparation and observations with changes observed in physical parameters has been discussed.

Sneha kalpana is one of the unique and commonly prescribed Ayurvedic dosage form in day-to-day practice having increase potency, palatability, shelf life etc. Although varities of Snehas are described in Ayurvedic texts, the most common amongst them are Taila& Ghrita kalpana. The research work entitled “Standardization ofGunja Taila” was planned to standardize two formulations as per the reference of Chakradattaand Bhaishajya Ratnavali. Therefore, two samples of Gunja Tailawith their three batches each, were prepared with their conceptual references. Both the samples were analyzed based on Organoleptic Parameters, i.e., Appearance, Colour, Odour, Touch, etc. and Physico-chemical Parameters i.e., Foreign Matter, Specific gravity, Saponification Value, Peroxide Value, Baudouin’s Test, Mineral oil Test, Viscosity, Total fatty Matter, Refractive Index, Brix Value, Rancidity, Optical Rotation, Acid Value, Iodine Value. The findings for these parameters were found to be satisfactory for quality assurance. Assay of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg), Total bacterial count and Total fungal count are under the permissible limit depicted in the study. Specific pathogens and aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2) are absent in all samples. HPTLC is an important tool to generate the standardization parameter for quality control purpose. Sample GT-1 and GT-2 were analysed on different wavelengths 510 nm, 366 nm (Long) & 254 nm (Short). It confirmed 11 distinct spots at 510 nm, 06 distinct spots at 366 nm and 12 spots at 254 nm of GT-1 samples whereas 12 distinct spots at 510 nm, 06 distinct spots at 366 nm and 12 spots at 254 nm were observed in GT-2 samples. The Rf values of spots differentiate the chemical composition of the sample

Durvadya Taila is medicated oil used in Ayurveda for Kacchu, Vicharchika and Pama (types of Skin diseases) which is caused by vitiated Kapha or Pitta Dosha. Durva is one of the classical drugs of herbal origin, for the management of different disease conditions. The aim of the present study is to do physico-chemical standards for above Durvadya Taila and its conversion into Durvadya Taila Cream. These two formulations have a special importance from pharmaceutical point of view when compared to usual Taila or cream. In present article, we are trying to study analytical results of Durvadya Taila w.s.r. to Durvadya Taila cream. The skin constitutes a major part of the body and serves as a dividing line between the individual and his environment. In the Ayurvedic classics, Bahir Parimarjana means, the medicine intended for external use only. For that purpose, in Ayurveda different forms of external applications are described for the convenience of treatment of different diseases. They are Lepa, Udvartana, Upanaha, Abhyanga, Malahara etc. Without defining creams under Panchavidha Kashaya Kalpana, we can correlate Cream preparation with Lepa or Malahara Kalpana. Creams are those emulsions, which are either oil in-water or water-in-oil type. Durvadya Taila is medicated oil used in Ayurveda for Kacchu, Vicharchika and Pama which comes under Kushtha Rogadhikar.

Jatyadi Ghrita is a ghee based Ayurvedic formulation useful for sravi (secretory), gambhira (deep), Dushta Vrana (contaminated wound) by external application by shodhana (cleaning) and ropana (healing) as per the classical texts of Ayurveda. Now day’s pharmacies are using coconut oil instead of ghrita for preparation of Jatyadi Ker Taila, but remaining contents are same as that of Jatyadighrita as quoted in our Samhitas. Hence a comparative study on Jatyadighrita as per classical text and Jatyadi Ker Taila (modified method by using coconut oil replacing ghrita) to know their physico-chemical properties. The physicochemical tests performed on different samples of Jatyadi Ghrita and Jatyadi Ker taila such as specific gravity, acid value, saponification value, Total fatty matter, melting point, viscosity etc. Further standardization by instrument analysis performed on HPTLC for finger printing profile. Comparative evaluation of above parameters shows that Ker taila (coconut oil) can be used as better substitute of ghrita for the preparation of Jatyadi formulation. Related physicochemical tests and HPTLC profile clearly shows the more stability of formulation and increased number of secondary metabolite extraction in Ker taila than ghrita. Possibly the above results denote best substitution of classical formulation Jatyadi ghrita is Jatyadi Ker taila (by using coconut oil replacing ghrita).

Bhallataka Taila (Oil) is extracted with the help of Patala Yantra. It is one of the important formulations in Ayurveda pharmaceutics. Shelf life for various dosage forms are described in Ayurveda classics. In the current scenario, the amendment of Rule No. 161-B of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940, specifies the maximum shelf life of Ayurvedic formulations. However, there is a lack of shelf life data for individual for-mulations. Thus, the present study is aimed to evaluate the shelf life of Bhallataka Taila (Oil). Bhallataka Taila (Oil) was extracted following classical guidelines. The sample was subjected to an accelerated stability study maintaining the temperature and humidity 40 +- 2 0C and 75 +- 5 %, respectively. Physico-chemical parameters were analysed at the initiation of the study and at an interval of 1, 3 and 6 months to check the degradation levels in the formulation. Tests for microbial limit and heavy metals were also conducted for the safety and quality of the product. On extrapolating the observations, the shelf life for Bhallataka Taila (Oil) was found to be 4.89 years, which exceeds the shelf life mentioned for Taila (Oil) in official gazettes of the Government of India. This oil preparation does not incorporate any liquid media such as Swarasa (Juice), Kwatha (decoction), etc. as required in any Taila Preparation, resulting in low degradation rate. The oil is rich in PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) content and tocopherols, which may contribute to the stability of the oil.

Basti is considered the best modality of treatment in managing the disorders of Vata Dosha. As Sandhigatavata is also one among Vatavyadhi, Basti is the effective line of treatment, which is characterized by swelling, pain during flexion and extension of joints. Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint condition with a prevalence of about 22% to 39% in India. There is a steady rise in prevalence from age 30 such that by age 65, 80% of people will have radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. It is caused by the degradation of the joints, the articular cartilages and subchondral bone. It is characterized by pain, stiffness and loss of flexibility of joints.1 By foregoing, Sandhi- gatavata can be readily correlated to Osteoarthritis. In contemporary medical science, they use NSAIDs for control of the symptoms. Acharya Sushrutha and Acharya Charaka have mentioned Snehana (Oleation) as a line of treat- ment in Sandhigatavata. So here an attempt is made through Janubasthi and Matrabasthi using Saireyaka Taila2 mentioned in Gada Nigraha under Vata Vyadhi for treating Janusandhigatavata in specific. Method: This study is an open-label, observational and clinical study containing 30 patients, who were posted for Janu Basti and Matra Basti with Saireyaka Taila for 9 days. The assessment was carried out before treatment, during treatment (5th day), after treatment (on 10th day) and after following up (28th day) and the gradings were noted. Results: Out of 30 patients in this study, 5 patients (17%) were getting Moderate Improvement and 25 patients (83%) were gettingGood Improvement. The overall effect of the treatment is 69.44%. Conclusion: It is concluded that the combined effect of Janubasti and Matrabasti with Saireyaka Taila is clinically and statistically significant in almost all the parameters. Gridhrasi is one among Vatajananatmaja Vikara characterized by Sthabdhata, Ruk, Toda which radiates from buttock region, lumbar region, thigh, knee, calf muscles and legs. Gridhrasi is of two types viz Vataja and Vata Kaphaja Gridhrasi. Vataja Gridhrasi is characterized by severe pain and Vata Kaphaja Gridhrasi has symptoms viz Tandra, Gaurava and Aruchi. The signs and symptoms of Gridhrasi can be correlated to sciatica of modern medicine. Sciatica is characterized by constant aching pain felt in lumbar region which may radiate to the buttock, thigh, calf and foot and pain is experienced along the sciatic nerve pathway. It is a common condition with lifetime incidence varying from 13% to 40%. Matra Basti is indicated in dis-eases caused by vitiated Vata Doshas and thus considered as one of the treatments for Gridhrasi. It was a comparative clinical study with a pre and post design in 40 patients who were diagnosed with Gridhrasi, were assigned into 2 groups of 20 patients each randomly. After examination MatraBasti had given for group A with Vyoshadi Taila and group B with Sahacharadi Taila after Sthanika Abhyanga and Nad-isweda with respective oil for 7 days. The assessment criteria were noted before and after treatment and on followup. Among the subjective and objective parameters, Group A showed better reduction 51.47% in Ruk, Sthambha, Toda, Gaurava, active and passive SLR test, Bragard’s test and Lumbar movements. Group B does not have statistically significant over Gaurava, left lateral flexion and rotation to leave. Showed reduction 40.49% in Ruk, Sthambha, Toda active and passive SLR test and lumbar movement. Hence it can be concluded that MatraBasti with Vyosadi Tailam is having more effect on symptoms of Gridhrasi and shows long lasting result.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto‐immune and most common persistent inflammatory disease occurring throughout the world in all ethnic groups with a male to female ratio of 1:3. In Indian System of Medicine, it resembles with Amavata, which was the first time described in Madhava Nidan as a separate clinical entity in the 7th century and characterised by Angamard (Pain), Aruchi (Anorexia), Trishna (Thirst), Alasya (Laziness), Gaurava (Stiffness), Jwara (Fever), Apaka (Indigestion), Angashunta (Swelling) etc. In modern medicine, treatment has limitations due to its side effects, whereas in Ayurveda, its effective management is detailed for its different states. Eranda Tail and Saindhavadi Tail Basti under Panchakarma procedures play a significant role in the management of Amavata. In the present case study, a 47years old female with a diagnosed history of RA has given a Combination of interventions includes Deepana, Pachana, Baluka Sweda, Eranda Taila and Saindhavhadi Taila Anuvasana Basti for 16 days along with Shaman Chikitsa (conservative treatment). Sciatica is a painful ailment caused by the pathology of the sciatic nerve or the sciatic nerve root. Pain and paresthesia in the sciatic nerve distribution or a lumbosacral nerve root are common in patients with this condition. A herniated disc with nerve root compression is the most common cause of sciatica; however lumbar stenoses and (less frequently) tumors are also probable causes. In general, 5 to 10 percent of people with low back pain have sciatica, but the lifetime prevalence of low back pain is reported to range from 49% to 70%. Gridhrasi having the same symptomatology as sciatica described in ayurvedic classics under vata vyadhi, is a condition in which pain, stiffness, gripping, and pulsations begin in the buttocks [gluteal region] and progress to the posterior aspect of the Kati (pelvis and lumbosacral regions), Uru (thigh), Jaanu (behind the knee), Jangha (leg), and Pada (foot). Among different modalities of treatment described in Ayurveda, Kati Basti is the most popular and commonly practiced one. In the present study an effort has been made to treat 30 patients of Gridhrasi with Kati Basti with Prasarini Taila and Tila taila separately in two groups. The treatment was given 48 minute long daily for seven days. The assessment was done by analyzing the changes in clinical signs and symptoms before and after treatment. The majority of patients (93.33 percent) improved after treatment. In this study, kati basti with prasarini taila outperformed moorchita tila taila in terms of reducing Gridhrasi or sciatica signs and symptoms. The snehana property of oil and medications in Prasarini taila was helpful in the relief of gridhrasi, as well as the swedana impact of Kati Basti.

Avartana is a unique concept mentioned for Sneha Kalpana. The more the number of Avartana the more potent will be the formulation. “Shata Paka Madhuka Taila" is one such formulation that is explained in Charaka Chikitsa Vataraktha Adhikara. Samples were subjected to pharmaceutico - Analytical study to compare the probable changes that would have happened pharmaceutically & analytically. Shata paka Madhuka Taila was prepared as per reference & samples were Analysed. The change in the organoleptic characters of all the Avartita samples was noted. Consistency of taila to semisolid consistency of ghruta in proceeding Avartana was observed. A slight increase in specific gravity & Refractive index were noted, decrease in acid value & iodine value was observed. Rancidity test passed & peroxide value was nil. slight acidic pH was noted. The presence of more bands with different Rf values was seen towards 50th, 75th & 100th Avartita samples on TLC. Pharmaceutical procedure reveals that concentration of the Active bio constituents of yastimadhu & milk fat gets increased in each Avartana., And it was evident from organoleptic characters like conversion of liquid Consistency of taila to semisolid consistency of ghruta (on cooling) in proceeding Avartana. A slight increase in specific gravity & Refractive index suggests more active constituents, decrease in acid value & iodine value suggests products are more stable & less chance of rancid on successive avartana. Rancidity & peroxide value tells product are not rancid. pH changes indicate slight acidicnature & may be irritant due to high potency. TLC shows the presence of more bands towards 50th, 75th& 100th avarti samples shows more active constituents. Hence Avartana process helps for potentiating the formulation by adding active constituents. Keywords: Sneha Kalpana, Avartana, Shata Paka Madhuka Taila.
