This book summarizes the basic features of living fish. It is introduced by a chapter on the diversity of a group which has over 30,000 species, the largest within the vertebrates, describing the classification systems used for them and the variety of their habitats and morphology. Thereafter the physiology of fish is described and discussed initially by categories such as the outer boundary (the skin), the circulatory system, food processing, reproduction, hormones as integrators and controllers, the nervous system and the very complex set of sensory receptors including the eyes, ears, lateral line and electro-receptors. Unusual structures, adaptations and behaviours reveal the breadth of fish lifestyles from deep-ocean to shallow reef habitats, with both fresh water and marine margins favouring some near-terrestrial forms even emerging to spawn. With enormous ranges of size, shape and lifecycles, fish are capable of extreme longevity and amazing adjustments to their environment, including colour change, light emission by photophores and sporadic hermaphroditism (both sexes in one individual). The use of fish types by scientists is discussed. Referenced throughout, the scope of the book includes reviews of historically important and recent discoveries and some speculation on the future for fish and fish conservation. Appendices are provided to give in-depth information on some topics, including material briefly describing practical procedures, relevant to experimentation and aquaculture, which may prompt further investigation. The glossary with explanations of terms, and the copious illustrations help understanding of this complex subject area.

Molecular Orbital Calculations for Biological Systems is a hands-on guide to computational quantum chemistry and its applications in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic, autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body, causing the immune system to attack the body’s cells and tissue, and resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. Hormones are highly biologically active endogenous compounds that control the growth, development, physiology, and homeostasis of numerous organ systems. Because of this, they have long been thought likely to play key roles in both normal and abnormal (malignant) growth. They are also noteworthy for being produced away from the tissues that they control, and are thus secreted into circulating blood to reach their target organs. This combination of potent, targeted agents of growth and development that can be measured in available biologic fluids has made steroidal and peptide hormonesparticularly susceptible and relevant to epidemiologic investigation. In addition, medications containing hormones and hormone antagonists have come into widespread use, providing further opportunities for epidemiologic insights into hormonal carcinogenesis. The development of increasingly more accurate assays to measure sex hormones and their metabolites has resulted in major advances in understanding the hormonal etiology of breast and gynecologic malignancies.

Systemic vasculitis is characterized by blood vessel inflammation which may lead to tissue injury from vascular stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, and/or rupture. Apart from relatively common vasculitides such as Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) and Kawasaki's disease (KD), most of the primary vasculitic syndromes are rare in childhood, but are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. New classification criteria for childhood vasculitis have recently been proposed and validated. The cause of most vasculitides is unknown, although it is likely that a complex interaction between environmental factors such as infections and inherited host responses trigger the disease and determine the vasculitis phenotype. Several genetic polymorphisms in vasculitis have now been described that may be relevant in terms of disease predisposition or development of disease complications. Treatment regimens continue to improve, with the use of different immunosuppressive medications and newer therapeutic approaches such as biologic agents. We provide an overview of paediatric vasculitides focusing on HSP, KD, and polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). Key differences (where relevant) between paediatric and adult vasculitis are highlighted. In addition we discuss new emerging challenges particularly in respect to the long-term cardiovascular morbidity for children with systemic vasculitis, and emphasize the importance of future international multicentre collaborative studies to further increase and standardize the scientific base of investigating and treating childhood vasculitis.
