Research on innovative methods for Conceptual Design of Control Strategies (CDCS) is of great theoretical and engineering meaning. In this paper, TRIZ-aided innovation in CDCS was proposed. At first, a systematic approach to build a new theory of inventive problem solving specialized for control strategies (TRIZ-CS) was proposed with its systemic structure was given. Then the Block-Signal analysis model (B-S analysis model) was proposed based on Su-Field analysis model in TRIZ with its symbol system and application procedure. Finally four examples were given to show the rationality of TRIZ-aided innovation in CDCS and effectiveness of B-S analysis model. The examples show that TRIZ-aided innovation is a systematic, effective and practical innovative methodology for CDCS.

Purpose – This paper aims to present a behavioural perspective on systemic innovation adoption decisions and resulting patterns in architecture engineering and construction (AEC). Building on the premise that innovation is always coupled with need identification or need creation, the paper analyses the systemic innovation-related needs and decisions of AEC actors. Design/methodology/approach – This research uses grounded theory to collect data through interviews, focus groups and field observation in Australian AEC. Based on the findings, three types of systemic innovation-related needs are identified to describe the dependencies in innovation-related needs of various actors in the construction innovation network, namely, need for the innovation, need to innovate and the need for the diffusion of innovation. Findings – It is found that the systemic innovation-related needs of actors in AEC network are interrelated. However, the systemic innovation-related decisions and, hence, the diffusion patterns are mediated by the degrees of freedom of the actors. Accordingly, it is argued that higher degrees of freedom of followers or the majority actors in AEC (to leave the innovation network) partially explain the slower rate of systemic innovation diffusion in AEC. Findings have implications on how systemic innovations in construction should be analysed and managed at the ecosystem level through an improved understanding of the interdependent innovation-related needs of the stakeholders. Originality/value – Innovation-related needs’ perspective provides novel and fresh insights into systemic innovation diffusion patterns in AEC and emphasises the significance of an ecosystem viewpoint to assess the roles of the different actors in AEC innovation network. The role of the degrees of freedoms of AEC actors in mediating systemic innovation diffusion is established.

There is always something from the past embedded in the new, establishing a synergetic and sympathetic relationship which gives meaning and value to this new creation. Innovation is about creating new values. Contemporary trends in architectural contemplation and creation are looking into a redefinition of innovation as an inventive systemic synergy of multiple parameters, the dynamic modeling of which, with the aid of new digital technologies, can suggest the appropriate form and materiality of architectural design. Sympathy and synergy are not mere situations, but primarily values that nurture architectural design and open up new challenges for architectural education. Materialised architecture is the expression of worldviews and values. Its form and materiality constitute the meaningful platform on which the relationship between tradition and innovation are represented. Tradition and innovation have always been in a binary opposition. Through the act of creation, invention, innovation, change and transformation are introduced. However, there has always been something in the new that comes from the existent. This condition can become the foundation for a new conception of innovation to emerge, a systemic innovation in which tradition is reflected upon and exploited as a constraint that will leverage and foster it.

The sustainable transition of the regional and urban systems in which we live represents a crucial challenge for our societies and requires a new integrated vision of the social, environmental, cultural, political and economic dimensions. Territorial systems can be considered as socio-technical systems, made up of a complex network of infrastructure and facilities and also of human interactions and activities. So far, the sustainable innovation of socio-technical systems has often been concerned with the introduction of sustainable technological solutions, but today it is clear how specific solutions must be framed from a systems perspective. The paper aims at providing a comprehensive analysis of the design tools able to support this systemic transition, starting from the analysis of the macro-strategies developed by the transition studies, in particular the Multi-level Perspective model. Through a cross-analysis with the main design fields related to the systemic design domain, four types of tools are highlighted, which aim at (i) establishing learning processes;(ii) building multi-stakeholder networks; (iii) sharing foresight visions; (iv) enhancing green niche innovations. The comparison of the different tools enables pointing out the contribution of systemic design to territorial enhancement, stressing the contact points and potential synergies between different design approaches.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to question the appropriateness of current lab types for addressing wicked problems. A new lab type, a Systemic Innovation Lab, is proposed which combines the features of existing labs that are suited to addressing wicked problems. Design/methodology/approach Characteristics of initiatives that are considered appropriate for addressing wicked problems and existing lab types that contain any of these characteristics are identified. These lab types are Social Innovation Labs, Living Labs, Urban Living Labs, Urban Transition Labs and Public Sector Innovation Labs. The proposed new lab type is reasoned by combining the features of existing labs that are suited to addressing wicked problems. How the new lab would work in practice is illustrated with a case study. Findings When addressing wicked problems, labs need to take a systemic design and not a service design approach. They also need to focus on addressing complex problems, take a place-based and transition approach, enable coherent action by diverse actors, involve users as co-creators, support a networked governance approach and recognize government as an enabler of change. Practical implications This paper provides a new lab type designed specifically for addressing wicked problems. This new lab supports practitioners that take a systemic design, solution ecosystem and systemic innovation approach. Systemic design is based on a core set of principles that are a crossover between design and complexity theory. Originality/value For the first time, this paper analyzes different lab types to determine their appropriateness for addressing wicked problems. It also proposes a new lab type whose sole purpose is addressing wicked problems.

Purpose Given that Blockchain technology poses a growing challenge to the banking industry, this paper aims to analyse the innovation of Blockchain banking with regard to its systemic dimension, as well as dynamics of competition. The empirical research demonstrates how the systemic characteristics of Blockchain banking relate to the pursuit of strategies and to what extent these strategies influence the directional path and level of technology diffusion. Design/methodology/approach The research study uses a case study methodology to explore the strategic competition of Blockchain banking. The study proposes the systemic innovation model for analysing and tracking the path of innovations. The model can be applied to any industry to understand the process of innovation development and the strategies to win market share in the banking industry. This research makes a contribution towards the theory of technology diffusion to understand the directional path of innovations. Findings The analyses of findings reveal the situation whereby most banks still compete to create their own Blockchain banking systems. The analyses, based on the systemic innovation model, also shows the low systemic feature of Blockchain banking at present. From the technology diffusion perspective, the future of Blockchain banking may need cross-chain interoperability to support a full spectrum of payments and value exchanges on the internet of things. Originality/value The main contribution of this paper is the systemic analysis of the latest innovation of Blockchain banking. Given that the research also includes the major banking innovation cases of ATM/cash cards, credit cards and electronic fund transfer at the point of sale/debit cards, the comparative analyses offer strategic insights to predict the progress, as well as pattern of technology development and diffusion for the case of Blockchain banking.

Purpose: The main objective of the article was to defined an innovation management system, which consist of: 1. Subsystem for managing their own innovative maturity. 2. Subsystem for managing the processes of obtaining product innovations from suppliers. 3. Subsystem for innovative maturity management of suppliers from the supply chain and networks of cooperating companies. 4. Subsystem for innovation performance management. The results of the literature and empirical research formed the basis for the development and test of two subsystems:  Subsystem for managing their own innovative maturity.  Subsystem for innovative maturity management of suppliers from the supply chain and networks of cooperating companies. Design/methodology/approach: The main objective of the literature study was to prepare tools to review the elements, with consist of the innovation management subsystems. The main objective of the own research was to compare the elements of innovation management used by the three automotive concerns that produce propulsion systems in Poland. Comparing the elements used allowed the defined a complex model of a network and supply chain innovation management system (especially the two subsystems and propose to retrofit them). The proposed research tools can too be used to assess the maturity for managing innovations arising in collaboration. The tools will also serve as an inspiration (for manager R&D) for supplementing a functioning system with missing elements. Findings: The first chapter presents the importance of developing a system from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view. The second chapter presents reserch methodology. The appendices 1 and 2 present the author's managerial tools for evaluative assessment of the two subsystems belong to innovation management system. The third chapter presents the results of surveys conducted using the developed managerial tools. Research limitations/implications: Research limitations/implications: The main purpose of the work was to develop a systemic innovation management model for the supply chain in the automotive industry and to assess the possibility of its implementation in business practice. This goal was partially achieved. The possibility of implementing a systemic model only at car manufacturers was examined. The enterprises cooperating in the supply chain (suppliers, customers) were not examined. In connection with the above, it can be stated that two subsystems have been verified (subsystem for managing their own innovative maturity; subsystem for innovative maturity management of suppliers from the supply chain). The others will be the subject of further research. Keywords: Innovation management, OI Open innovation model.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the different assessments of a particular industry and its ability to innovative, renew and prosper, but also to look into the underlying assumptions that are hiding behind the systemic approaches utilized in these assessments. The point of departure is an empirical puzzle: one group of studies presents a rather optimistic view of the Swedish life science industry and its ability to economize on research, policy and industrial investments. Another group of studies presents much a darker view, questioning the capacity of new companies to reach economic endurance, as well as the possibility of keeping the actually successful companies within the country. At a first sight it appears as if the two groups of studies are resting on a common theoretical ground: all seem to depart from a systemic innovation perspective that challenges the idea of an independent business landscape. Design/methodology/approach – The difference between the assessments becomes comprehensible once the authors allow for a variety of systemic approaches in innovation thinking. The authors propose an ideal-typical distinction between two types of system perspectives; those that view technology as entangled in its environment and those that view technology as disentangled from its environment. The authors use the national innovation system (NIS) and the industrial network (IMP) approaches to exemplify the two perspectives. Findings – An implication of the study is that the term “systemic perspective” is very broad and encompassing, something that in turn points to the importance of being clear about what the authors mean with a system, but also with what the theoretical assumptions focus on and abstract away from. Originality/value – The ideal-typical distinction between two types of system perspectives; those that view technology as entangled in its environment and those that view technology as disentangled from its environment. The authors use the NIS and the IMP approaches to exemplify the two perspectives.

Over the past decade, the term “design thinking” has received increasing attention in a wide range of contexts and has become increasingly familiar beyond the professional design arena. Exploration of potential cross-boundary engagements and the role of design as an agent of change for both innovation and social transformation are two main mechanisms underlying the burgeoning discussion of design thinking in areas outside the design profession. This study provides an insight into the implementation of a design-thinking approach in non-designerly contexts. To investigate how design thinking is understood and applied in relation to non-designerly thinking, an analysis was undertaken of 345 articles from the Scopus database between 2002 and 2017 that included “design thinking” as a keyword. It was found that design thinking serves as a mechanism that enables and promotes innovation and social transformation. The results show that design thinking can foster new approaches to innovation as well as complex and persistent social problems through a framework of co-creation, systemic thinking, abductive reasoning, and iteration. The findings reveal that initiatives using design-thinking approaches can deliver positive outcomes in the fields of business management, social innovation, and education.

This article introduces a novel and comprehensive conceptual framework for designing innovative food experiences that enhance food well-being. We call this framework the novel food experience design. It supports managers in cocreating customer-centric food experiences to limit unintended detrimental consequences and enhance individual and societal food well-being. The novel food experience design (1) employs a systemic (vs. endemic) approach to the innovation process and (2) promotes prioritizing ethical decision-making alongside economic decision-making. Building on insights derived from ecosystem theory and the ethical principles literature, we develop four fundamental propositions to innovate food experiences: do no harm, do good, ensure autonomy, and ensure fairness. Our framework promotes higher levels of individual and societal food well-being than restricted food design innovations, preventing unintended consequences. Finally, we illuminate the implications for service research and practice.

Purpose This paper aims to question the utility of addressing food insecurity through food assistance programmes and by separating food security into pillars, and it argues for a systemic innovation and complexity approach. This is achieved by demonstrating that food insecurity is a wicked problem and therefore needs to be addressed holistically. Design/methodology/approach To establish that food insecurity is a wicked problem, characteristics of food insecurity are aligned to characteristics of wicked problems. The need to address wicked problems holistically through a systemic innovation approach and an understanding of complexity theory is discussed by referring to the literature. How to take such an approach for addressing food insecurity is illustrated by describing the use of an online tool that takes a systemic innovation and complexity approach. Findings Given food insecurity is a wicked problem and needs to be addressed holistically, the focus when addressing food insecurity should not be on programmes or pillars. Instead, it needs to be on increasing the coherence and building the adaptive capacity of food insecurity solution ecosystems. Practical implications This paper provides insights into the nature of food insecurity and how to address food insecurity. Design’s arguments of innovative transformation and its constant search for a preferred future have become a contemporary principle of the discipline, and yet most design models limit their process to the production of the next stage of incremental innovation. This approach to the future carries significant systemic problems that can go from unexpected behavioral changes to unintended discrimination against certain groups, especially when addressing complex social problems and transformations. Avoiding these systemic problems might require the use of Design Research to study the conditions that produced them. However, design researchers seem to still disagree on the nature of Design Research, and the specific knowledge that can be produced through it. This paper seeks to introduce a possible model for design research that integrates various design theories to help obtain a more sophisticated view of the systemic situation of possible preferred futures. The goal of these process is to seek to produce a better understanding of how stakeholders envision their future, their intentions, values and needs as a systemic view within any given socio-technical system.

Transition to a Circular Economy (CE) is about structural change and is predicated on the introduction of transformative eco-innovation (EI). Research on the CE–EI nexus has recently attracted attention both from an analytical and regulatory perspective. However, in-depth research exploring EI dynamics within the CE is still marginal, especially concerning the trends and dynamics of the pro-CE innovation policy and strategy. This paper addresses this gap by taking advantage of the burgeoning research on CE of the last 20 years and offers a new working synthesis. By implementing a “(systematic) review of (systematic) reviews”, this paper provides a new comprehensive framework for understanding pro-circular innovation strategies and, as a complement, argues the need to advance “circular innovation studies” as an agenda in its own right. Innovations related to recycling and recovery CE strategies along with business-model innovations and systemic/transformative innovations are found to be a major current trend in the research, connecting supply and demand side innovations and also driving other forms of innovation linked to design, product manufacturing, logistics and reverse logistics and end-of-life management and recovery. Additionally, of note is that the conceptual understanding of EI dynamics within a CE is still mainly implicit (rather than explicitly discussed) limiting the possibilities to advance knowledge in the area of innovation for CE: this is why we propose a “circular innovation studies” agenda.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present an analytical review of the educational innovation field in the USA. It outlines classification of innovations, discusses the hurdles to innovation, and offers ways to increase the scale and rate of innovation-based transformations in the education system. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a literature survey and author research. Findings US education badly needs effective innovations of scale that can help produce the needed high-quality learning outcomes across the system. The primary focus of educational innovations should be on teaching and learning theory and practice, as well as on the learner, parents, community, society, and its culture. Technology applications need a solid theoretical foundation based on purposeful, systemic research, and a sound pedagogy. One of the critical areas of research and innovation can be cost and time efficiency of the learning. Practical implications Several practical recommendations stem out of this paper: how to create a base for large-scale innovations and their implementation; how to increase effectiveness of technology innovations in education, particularly online learning; how to raise time and cost efficiency of education. Social implications Innovations in education are regarded, along with the education system, within the context of a societal supersystem demonstrating their interrelations and interdependencies at all levels. Raising the quality and scale of innovations in education will positively affect education itself and benefit the whole society. Originality/value Originality is in the systemic approach to education and educational innovations, in offering a comprehensive classification of innovations; in exposing the hurdles to innovations, in new arguments about effectiveness of technology applications, and in time efficiency of education.

This paper examines the evolution of the cellular mobile communications system which is treated as an example of a Complex Product System (CoPS). It distinguishes between architectural, component and systemic innovations in order to isolate different phases of innovation in the birth, growth and transformation of the cellular systems and other CoPS. An architectural phase in the birth and early development of a CoPS is powerfully influenced by regulators, system suppliers, standard-making bodies and large users. In this phase, emphasis is placed on developing and testing new system architectures prior to commercialisation. In a new product generation phase, the rate of component and systemic innovation increases and successive new product generations are introduced without fundamentally changing the established architectural design. Industries supplying CoPS are often relatively stable because suppliers have developed core capabilities to accommodate the periodic introduction of new product generations.

The purpose of this study is to consider the main aspects of system security providing institutional concept within the technological & innovation systems research methodology development through institutional innovations. In this paper, we will consider how the new evolutionary institutional theory of economic systems in the context of the space-time approach can help in organizing strategic management of development path of the innovation system, increasing system security, and effectiveness of its activities through the balance of system structure. Methodology. The scientific novelty of the research and the solution of its tasks deals, first of all, with the application of the non-system approach, which allows one to consider the factors and results of functioning of such complex economic systems as innovation macro projects, innovation processes, institutional and informational environments, etc. within the framework of providing national security. Involvement on a systematic basis of spatiotemporal analysis allows us to consider in the interrelation processes the distribution of flows of innovation resources and functions, on the one hand, and the distribution in time of similar flows. To solve the tasks of research, the classical scientific methods (analysis and synthesis, logical generalization, analogies, comparative comparison, and grapho-analytical methods), and specific methods of high technologies economy and innovation management were used. Results. As a result of the study, the features of the systemic socio-economic patterns of the functioning of innovation system institutions and the mechanism of management of innovation development in the conditions of modern global technological transformations have been determined. In the future, this makes possible the substantiation of promising areas of state regulation (participation) aimed at activating innovation processes in the economy according to the priorities related to scientific and educational, cluster and network development, and the development of a set of models for the harmonization of the system of priorities of national security and sectoral priorities of innovation development. Using the gained knowledge in practice will help to improve the state of national security, resource saving, improve conditions, and increase labour productivity, as well as the transition to sustainable development of the national economy. Practical implications. Systemic coordination of innovation components of state programs, stimulation of innovation activity, involvement of financial strategies in the innovation economy, expansion of international cooperation and activation of demand for high-tech products, increasing the effectiveness of innovation development programs of companies, and launching of national projects have been proposed as the objectives of forming institutional innovations. The proposed institutional and technological design methodology provides for the selection of institutional tools and scaling of the most effective development tools. Value/originality. The proposed network mechanisms for systemic security ensuring provide the improvement of implementing innovative development programs for the largest companies with state participation; further development of priority technological platforms and innovation networks; harmonization of technological priorities and projects formed within the framework of technological platforms, with the tools of state strategies.

The purpose of the study is to substantiate the scientific and methodological approach to the management of innovative labor in the enterprise. Innovative labor as a component of innovation activity is considered as one of the important prerequisites for ensuring economic growth and obtaining competitive advantages. The methodology of management of innovative labor as a dynamic component is proposed to be considered on the basis of an integrated approach. The theoretical basis of enterprise management, focused on innovation, is based on a modern understanding of the essence of innovation labor management as a system that requires the substantiation of the principles and functions of management based on an understanding of the new nature of innovative labor and the features of the modern stage of economic system development. The relationship between the stages of the life cycle and the types of organizational structures that can most effectively provide labor at these stages are substantiated. It should be noted that at such stages as scientific research, design developments, and the acquisition of innovations – the best, preferred organizational structures are linear, functional, and linear-functional. As result of the generalization, it is concluded that at all stages of the life cycle, the best possible are the following organizational structures: matrix, project, divisional. To ensure the most effective management of innovations at the enterprise, scientific and methodological provisions for the management of innovative labor are formed, based on an integrated approach, which represents an integration of the process, functional, systemic, situational and strategic approaches to management. The methodological provisions of this approach are developed taking into account the construction of organizational structures and their susceptibility to various types of innovations. The use of an integrated approach facilitates the substantiation of a set of organizational structures for different stages of the life cycle of innovation and the choice of adequate methods for assessing the efficiency of innovative labor.

AbstractWithin the third wave of digital service innovation, framing is becoming increasingly complex. Accordingly, design practice finds itself in a transition from designing single service solutions that are shared, to designing systemic solutions that are shareable. We report a case study in which we use Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to analyze the framing process that a designer went through when designing a digital service for a Connected Care startup. Results show the importance of the designer's activity awareness and the challenge of dealing with relational complexity when framing the digital service innovation. With this work, we hope to inspire researchers and practitioners with the potential that CHAT has to offer for the reflective practice in digital service innovations.

The systemic mechanism of change — innovation and progressin the light of communication scienceIn the article I discuss the concept of innovation and progress with regard to the results of the design process within the framework of the communication design system. I understand the concept of innovation and progress as mechanisms controlling development on two different levels. In the case of innovation we can speak of a change within a given category, while in the case of progress — a change of the entire category. The concept will correspond to a given sector of the economy.

The world’s poor numbered almost 2.8 billion in 2001, and 2.5 billion in 2005. During a decade of participatory research in a village in Yucatan, Mexico, we built a systemic model of transition from poverty to wellbeing. Households are the basic units because they are the source of human biological and cultural reproduction. Poverty is characterized by low levels of basic needs (i.e. education, health, income and capital). We applied a strategy of innovation and multiple goals, and exploited interaction between variables, in successive approaches within time cycles. Model application improved child nutrition, investment and savings, and credits levels

ObjectivesThe healthcare sector lags behind other industries in efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. This study aims to better understand how those who design new health technologies (devices, technical aids and information technologies) perceive and address environmental considerations in their practice.MethodsWe conducted in-depth interviews with engineers, industrial designers, entrepreneurs and clinicians (n=31) involved in the design, development and distribution of health innovations in Quebec and Ontario (Canada). A qualitative thematic data analysis identified similarities and variations across respondents’ viewpoints.ResultsInnovators’ views emphasise the following: (1) the double burden of supporting patient care and reducing the environmental impact of healthcare; (2) systemic challenges to integrating environmental considerations in health innovation design, development and use and (3) solutions to foster the development of environmental-friendly health innovations. Although innovators tend to prioritise patient care over the environment, they also call for public policies that can transform these two imperatives into a single duty to care.ConclusionsHealth innovators are uniquely positioned to tackle challenges and develop creative solutions. Policymakers and regulators should, however, actively steer the healthcare industry towards a more sustainable modus operandi by giving full attention to environmental considerations in health innovation design.

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to set out ideas regarding the use of both first- and second-order cybernetics in reducing global energy-based emissions through energy technology innovation at multiple levels and to discuss necessary production and consumption patterns to facilitate such changes over time. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a conceptual framework to estimate a national model of energy consumption and production, conceived as embedded hypercubes for different actor levels. The author has developed a model that elaborates on a multi-level ecosystem for low-carbon technology adoption and innovation, embedded within a sustainability transition framework. Findings The paper reviews product–process relationships at multiple levels and grounds the framework in a transition approach. With more contextually conceptualized framework grounded in theory, this research aims to inform future development in the topic area, given the embryonic emergence of advanced cybernetic technologies, by viewing such capabilities at the subsystem level as a unit of analysis. This paper investigates how public sector institutions change their form and approach to achieve a socially innovative urban governance. The “Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics” (MONUM) in Boston, Massachusetts (USA) proves a representative case of innovation in the public sector. As a new type of government agency, it is essentially an open innovation lab dedicated to innovative evidence-based policymaking. Following a new dynamic organizational pattern in urban governance, MONUM is conducive to project-oriented social innovation practices and horizontal multi-sectoral collaboration among the three societal sectors: public, private, and civil. Its results suggest that first, the peculiarity of MONUM lies in its hybrid and boundary-blurring nature. Second, new institutional forms that experiment with urban governance can rely on multi-sectoral collaboration. Third, MONUM has experimented with a systemic approach to social innovation following the “design thinking theory.” The MONUM case can contribute to the current debate in Europe on the need to harmonize EU policies for an effective social inclusion by promoting the application of the place-sensitive approach.

In many parts of the world, governments are building new platforms, methods, and innovative experimental spaces to better respond to current complex problems. Laboratories in the public sector have emerged as experimental spaces that incorporate co-creation approaches to promote public innovation and social transformation. Although there is abundant literature about public innovation and reports on innovative practices, little progress has been made on how to evaluate these. In this paper, we describe the process that led to the development of an experimental evaluation tool for public innovation as part of an action-research process in a laboratory within the Uruguayan Government. The pilot prototype, the ‘Roadmap’ as we named it, seeks to provide a timely and purposeful means to learn from the co-creation processes and be accountable to public authorities and society. Aiming to build a learning system within the organisation to communicate results, we designed the Roadmap based on the confluence of various approaches, namely, development evaluation, organisational learning and reflexive monitoring. Other relevant approaches to public innovation and evaluation were also considered, such as public design evaluative thinking, social innovation evaluation, and systemic evaluation of learning.

The employed methodology incorporates dynamic change contexts, generating high uncertainty in organizational decision-making. Managing innovation in renewable energies implies a structured and systemic process that includes technological surveillance, competitive intelligence, foresight, and planning. The results show that technological surveillance offers the possibility of making progress on border knowledge in the design, manufacturing and instrumentation of photobioreactors for the microalgae culture. It is concluded that the costly process for the generation of renewable energies for human consumption leads to reflect on its viability before being available for use, especially the management of those actions aimed at creative solutions.

Purpose This metasynthesis aims to build a theory on the concept of innovation ecosystem from the state of the art of qualitative case studies available in indexed scientific production using interpretive synthesis (Hoon, 2013). Design/methodology/approach This research was conducted by the postulates of the metasynthesis method (Hoon, 2013) to generate theory from qualitative case studies. The authors retrieved 77 research papers from databases, of which 6 were used for synthesis purposes. Each selected research paper reported one or more cases, which were analyzed separately. At the final stage, a data synthesis was structured and the cases were crossed, which allowed the development of a schematic representation and a theoretical construction of the innovation ecosystem concept. The approach used in this research is a metatheoretical assumption from economics and management and ecology to explore the theoretical gap in the concept of innovation ecosystems. Findings There is not yet a conceptual consensus on the term, which sometimes leads researchers to address partial or complementary concepts. The analysis identified constitutive elements of an innovation ecosystem that lead to structuring a framework of organic and dynamic interrelationships that a given organization has with various external organizations, allowing the creation of innovative products in a faster way. Research limitations/implications This paper helps scholars and researchers consider a new metatheoretical perspective to analyze dynamics, constitutive elements and multilevels of an innovation ecosystem. Practical implications For practitioners, this paper sheds lights on the importance of recognizing a systemic consideration of innovation ecosystems that falls in global relationships, industry dynamics and identification of main global–local actors/enablers to produce innovations internally at a given organization. Originality/value The novelty of this paper lies in a more delineated definition and a schematic representation of an innovation ecosystem based on a global–local perspective of product creation and manufacturing and interactions that a given company has, regardless of the geographical location of its dispersed strategic partners.

The digital innovation era creates new challenges for companies and amplifies the gap between leaders and followers. This paper builds on a human-centered design (HCD) approach, arguing that companies can bridge this gap by mastering the human aspects of their entire digital journey. Based on a study conducted online with fifteen executives of leading companies involved in digital initiatives, provide insights into how companies can use HCD approaches to help them engage customers and employees and better navigate the digital innovation journey. HCD approaches can drive digital adoption forward by assisting companies in building empathy with people and developing a systemic environment that encourages them to be more flexible, optimize the user's experience and facilitate the co-creation of digital innovation solutions. By gaining a proper understanding of customer and employee needs, desires, and pain points, companies can better align technology and business goals and prioritize areas that will have the most significant impact on customers' day-to-day lives and across the entire company.

Purpose – This paper strives for stressing the need for tourism enterprises' (TEs') policy/governance innovation towards more social responsibility for stimulating their competitiveness. The purpose is to develop suggested content-related guidelines for developing social responsible TE policy and to show the practical implementation guidance for implementation of the theoretical research. According to the authors' knowledge, this has not yet been researched in the field of tourism industry (TIN). Design/methodology/approach – The MER model of integral management has been upgraded by Mulej's Dialectical Systems Theory. The authors considered all relevant and only the essential aspects needed for a requisitely holistic approach towards developing the guidelines for innovating the TEs' policy/governance. Findings – Innovation of TEs' policy/governance is possible only with the requisitely holistic and dialectical approach. TEs that will be able to track the suggested guidelines of tourism policy/governance innovation towards holism, systemic thinking, social responsibility, and sustainable tourism are more likely to succeed. Therefore, the stimulating of competitiveness and innovation of the TIN can be achieved through enterprises' policy/governance innovation that the authors suggested. Practical implications – The TEs can establish socially (and otherwise) responsible enterprise policy/governance in accordance with the recommendations developed here. Originality/value – The given suggestions are not known in available literature. The paper exposes the need for holism and consistency of TEs' development potential and interdependently examines the overlaying areas of TEs' policy/governance, social responsibility, and holism/wholeness. The Dialectical Systems Theory systemic approach exposes the need to innovate enterprise policy/governance, if humankind is to survive.

Digital innovation is a key success factor for business enterprises and organizations concerned with public safety. Increasingly shorter technology cycles produce a stream of highly promising gadgets and smart devices and this innovative provision opens a gap between what is currently in use for the value-creation processes of an organization and what could potentially be used. The presented framework provides guidance on how to implement dynamic capabilities needed for business model and service innovation within a complex socio-technical system. A way to combine technology and use-case sensing with the ultimate aim of creating innovative artifacts for organizations is presented. While Business Model Innovation (BMI) literature mainly focuses on a strategic top-down process, we propose a bottom-up process-driven approach to complement business frameworks. Based on these insights, new service artifacts can be designed and analyzed in a systemic way. The applied research methodology is based on the design science research concept. A qualitative approach with focus groups was used to gather user requirements and facilitate participatory and user-centered design of information systems. In this paper, we provide a framework that supports business executives as well as IT experts on how to cope with and integrate new technologies into organizations, their processes, and their business models. In addition to a comprehensive theoretical overview of the proposed framework, we also provide practical results, since this framework was applied in the course of a service design and engineering research project. A use case of alpine rescue missions serves as an example to demonstrate the practical application of the proposed framework.

Purpose Due to the increasing complexity in supply chains and networks, several key practices have been highlighted as beneficial for supply chain performance. However, it is less known whether adopting such practices affects the innovation performance of the focal firm. This study hypothesises that supplier collaboration practices in four specific areas (green and ethical supply management, early supplier involvement, systemic purchasing and inter-firm learning) may lead to higher focal firm innovation performance, as they require the firm to adopt new business models, processes and product features. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses drawn from previous research are tested with a quantitative survey study of 165 Finnish firms and analysed by means of regression analysis. Findings The results show that two examined practices are positively related to focal firm innovation performance: systemic purchasing and green and ethical supply management. Interestingly, early supplier involvement and inter-firm learning did not influence innovation performance. Originality/value Little is known about whether adopting certain practices in supply management affects the innovation performance of the firm. In fact, among the performance indicators of supply management, innovation is rarely studied, and more studies using innovation as a performance indicator are called for. Thus, this study focuses on supplier collaboration practices and their relation to the focal firm’s innovation performance.

AbstractIn “Grande cuisine” creation and tradition co-evolve in a rich number of ways. Great chefs still use recipes from the 19th century and may also reinvent gastronomy itself. The creation heritage of culinary Art is the paradoxical capacity to both “respect” tradition and “break” its rules. Building on C-K theory, we show that such creative heritage needs multiple and independent layers of knowledge that “speak” of basic fixed objects. These properties correspond to general mathematical structures that we find in Topos theory. Thus, C-K/Topos predicts creative design strategies that can respect tradition in different ways. It also proves a form of “innovation within tradition” - “sheafification” in Topos words- that is not a compromise and builds on tradition itself. These findings fit with the lessons of great books of gastronomy. C-K/Topos has a wide scope of validity: it applies to any innovative design that needs preserving systemic structures, like engineering systems or social and environmental systems. C- K/Topos models with a high generality how local and radical innovation can warrant systems incremental change. C-K/Topos will have implications for teaching and research.

This article examines a systemic innovation model into which the relational approach of actor-network theory (ANT) has been incorporated. The article examines what the relational approach can contribute to the conceptualization of services and to the co-development and co-design activities of them. The article operates in the context of public welfare and health services, but its analysis might be applied in any other sector and with any other object of development as well. The article presents the systemic innovation model developed in a national Innovillage project in 2009-2013 in Finland. Further, the article studies how the model has been translated into practice in the design activities of a strategic development program of social and health sector run by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland. In the discussion analytical and practical challenges of the model are specified and its further development is discussed.

Rather than spend an inordinate amount of time and resources on planning what is inherently unknown and uncertain, socially-focused organizations like Panera Cares, Banco Davivienda, and Brigham Young University's (BYU) Design Exploration lab quickly map out their assumptions, run experiments to test those assumptions, and adjust their plans based on their learnings. In this article, we explain and expand on how organizations of all kinds (whether they be large corporations, social ventures, or government agencies) have bought into the idea of using innovation and experimentation for impact; and how despite recent advancements of design thinking on the social impact front, the actual implementation of innovative ideas remains elusive for many organizations. The article further presents a more systemic model for social impact innovation: social impact models, which provide one possible solution by enabling social ventures to achieve a more robust validation of their new- and not-so-new-to-the-world ideas by mapping and strategies by mapping out each assumption and iteratively testing them in the field. With this article, the authors seek to provide a practical process for how to apply the model, and how to avoid the most common illusory validation traps, which together would allow socially-focused organizations to more frequently succeed and deliver more impact with their endeavors.

This article presents the process for the “Design of services under the COVID19 emergency social protection plan”, drawn up by a team of researchers and designers from Porto Alegre in collaboration with the Porto Alegre City Government, and directed at the provision of essential benefits to homeless and other vulnerable people during the pandemic. The process was developed in an unprecedented way for the designers involved: without prior notice, within very short time frames and completely remotely, using only digital platforms. As such, the process was developed to respond to the emergency and amid the emergency. In this regard, the objective of the article is to discuss how to design amid emergency. The experience was guided by the methodological principles of action research and research through design. In addition to the design results, these being solutions aimed at the short, medium and long term, this article highlights the need, even in these circumstances, to aim for the prizing of difference, the suggestion of alternative views, social innovation, the systemic transformation of society and sustainability.
