This thesis describes the approach and results of the research to create a TRIZ based computer aided innovation tools (AEGIS and Design for Wow). This research has mainly been based around two tools created under this research: called AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System), and Design for Wow. Both of these tools are discussed in this thesis in detail, along with the test data, design methodology, test cases, and research. Design for Wow (http://www.designforwow.com) is an attempt to summarize the successful inventions/ designs from all over the world on a web portal which has multiple capabilities. These designs/innovations are then linked to the TRIZ Principles in order to determine whether innovative aspects of these successful innovations are fully covered by the forty TRIZ principles. In Design for Wow, a framework is created which is implemented through a review tool. The Design for Wow website includes this tool which has been used by researcher and the users of the site and reviewers to analyse the uploaded data in terms of strength of TRIZ Principles linked to them. AEGIS (Accelerated Evolutionary Graphics Interface System) is a software tool developed under this research aimed to help the graphic designers to make innovative graphic designs. Again it uses the forty TRIZ Principles as a set of guiding rules in the software. AEGIS creates graphic design prototypes according to the user input and uses TRIZ Principles framework as a guide to generate innovative graphic design samples. The AEGIS tool created is based on TRIZ Principles discussed in Chapter 3 (a subset of them). In AEGIS, the TRIZ Principles are used to create innovative graphic design effects. The literature review on innovative graphic design (in chapter 3) has been analysed for links with TRIZ Principles and then the DNA of AEGIS has been built on the basis of this study. Results from various surveys/ questionnaires indicated were used to collect the innovative graphic design samples and then TRIZ was mapped to it (see section 3.2). The TRIZ effects were mapped to the basic graphic design elements and the anatomy of the graphic design letters was studied to analyse the TRIZ effects in the collected samples. This study was used to build the TRIZ based AEGIS tool. Hence, AEGIS tool applies the innovative effects using TRIZ to basic graphic design elements (as described in section 3.3). the working of AEGIS is designed based on Genetic Algorithms coded specifically to implement TRIZ Principles specialized for Graphic Design, chapter 4 discusses the process followed to apply TRIZ Principles to graphic design and coding them using Genetic Algorithms, hence resulting in AEGIS tool. Similarly, in Design for Wow, the content uploaded has been analysed for its link with TRIZ Principles (see section 3.1 for TRIZ Principles). The tool created in Design for Wow is based on the framework of analysing the TRIZ links in the uploaded content. The ‘Wow’ concept discussed in the section 5.1 and 5.2 is the basis of the concept of Design for Wow website, whereby the users upload the content they classify as ‘Wow’. This content then is further analysed for the ‘Wow factor’ and then mapped to TRIZ Principles as TRIZ tagging methodology is framed (section 5.5). From the results of the research, it appears that the TRIZ Principles are a comprehensive set of innovation basic building blocks. Some surveys suggest that amongst other tools, TRIZ Principles were the first choice and used most .They have thus the potential of being used in other innovation domains, to help in their analysis, understanding and potential development.

This Dissertation presents a comprehensive Process Map for innovation [the Map], based on a comparison and synthesis of the reported steps for creating in many disciplines, including Engineering Design and Buddhist Meditation. The Map is presented in three stages and seven detailed steps, following a review of the status quo of innovation in Engineering Design from literature and Industry surveys, and can be said to provide the first natural and common language for innovation. The application of Buddhist Methods is a key feature in the development of the Map, introducing a consistency and hierarchy, as well as co-evolutionary and eco-systemic aspect to academic understanding of innovation and its management, which has been lacking in models proposed in literature and Tools such as TRIZ in the past. Presentation of the Map theory and Map itself is followed by reports of its testing and proof of concept with an Industry Collaborator from 2006-10, including: [i] benchmarking of ‘Systematic Innovation’ [ii] an Industry Pilot Test comparing teaching of TRIZ with the Innovation Map and [iii] results of four nine-month periods of application in training, coaching, workshops, Games and GameDays. The Map is shown to improve high-end technical innovation in corporate environments, by streamlining the way questions are asked, and answers found and evaluated. It is directly responsible for unprecedented solutions achieved by Engineering Design teams addressing long-standing problems in very short time frames. Facilitated sessions using the Map achieve an ROI up to 2847% in each session and are estimated to have contributed billions of Euros value to the Industry Collaborator over four years of testing. In comparison with other options, the Map provides cheaper, simpler and more elegant innovation incorporating Tools, process and potential culture for any kind of User - Company, Consultant, Innovation Manager or Academic.

The purpose of this research is to critically inquire into the appropriateness of the current human computer interaction (HCI) practices in Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) system design given the contextual constraints and challenges found in developing country contexts. Despite user participation in system design being a buzzword of HCI the form of this participation varies with the different disciplinary perspectives and paradigms and their different methods for engaging users and identifying users' needs. Moreover, a majority of these dominant HCI perspectives are not only rooted in the developed countries context they also mainly focus on organisational management information systems (MIS) and less on information systems (IS) that place emphasis on the socio-economic context of developing countries. Literature review reveal that limited studies focus on the differences brought about by the western influenced methodologies and principles when applied in different contexts and how they affect the user participation process as well as the outcome. Building on past research, this research argues that HCI for ICTD needs to develop new contextualised participatory methods and strategies that consider the broader and complex contexts of the ICTD users. However, shifting the focus to localised forms of HCI in ICTD system design requires a better appreciation of the challenges and constraints encountered when applying the traditional HCI methods and strategies. Based on this argument the research conceptually explores and reflects on the underlying contextual factors and mechanisms present in participatory ICTD system design and the presumed relationships among them. Drawing on this conceptual framework, the research conducts semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and participant observations with three mobile money system design projects in Kenya that engaged the users during the design process to highlight how current HCI practices respond to the multifaceted nature of ICTD system design which present challenges that include social, technical, cultural and infrastructural issues. Findings from this qualitative study provide significant new insights that support the call for contextualised participatory methods and strategies. The findings suggest that there is tension between the underlying assumptions inherent in western HCI methods and strategies and the local context thus justifying the call for the appropriation of the design process. Drawing on the conceptual framework it was found that bias formed from factors such as power relations, diversity in interests for participation and cross-cultural differences moderate the design process and ultimately the participatory outcome. From the knowledge perspective, this research provides an in-depth understanding of the developing country contextual factors that mediate user participation process in ICTD system design. Furthermore, the research extends the knowledge with regards to participatory interventions in the development of IS in Africa. The research also presents a theoretical framework that makes explicit the contextual assumptions and constraints embedded in participatory ICTD system design interventions and how they shape the design process and the participatory outcome. Finally, the recommendations formulated from this research provide HCI designers and practitioners actionable knowledge in regards to reflecting on their current traditional HCI tools and techniques to ensure better localised design processes.

The management control systems (MCS) concept has evolved significantly the past decades with extensive studies that explore not only the concept itself but as well its relation to diverse variables such as performance, innovativeness and organisational learning. Nonetheless, inaccuracy is still present according to some researchers. (Tessier & Otley, 2012; Ferreira & Otley, 2009) By means of a systematic review (Tranfield et al., 2003), an interpretive analysis that embodies academic literatures in the area is presented. As a result, this thesis provides a synthesis delineation of the interactive management control systems’ concept. For the purpose of the study, a systematic selection of published and non-published academic literatures was conducted. (Saunders et al.,2009). Simons (Levers of control. Boston, Mass.: Harvard Business School Press,1995) was used as a starting point in order to generate criteria for the subsequent identification of relevant sources and get a grounding understanding of the topic before taking the challenge in form of a literature review in order to establish a distinction of the concept. This paper differs from prior studies in the field because of its attempt to clarify the concept of interactive control systems in a systematic manner which will allow the reader to have a see-through approach on all the procedures undertaken for the study. 111 articles were retrieved and following screening and abstract analysis 17 studies (including Simons, 1995 and Bisbe et al., 2005) were selected for the discussion of this qualitative literature review. In contrast to the existing literatures in the MCS field, I conceptualise the findings in 2 categories order to distinct the concepts of interactive MCS from interactive use of MCS. The main contribution of the study is the finding that there is a difference between interactive control systems and interactive use of control systems. Interactive MCS as such has a functionalist view and are designed to deliver interactiveness regardless of the context or the actors. And interactive use of control systems concerns the enactment of any control systems in an interactive manner. Therefore, the context (innovative environment) and the actor are taken into account in order for the systems to deliver positive effects. In addition, Evidences show that the interactive MCS as such are progressive instruments and characterised by effective and regular discussion among the users. Which lead to positive effects on strategy, workplace and innovation. Interactive use of MCS on the other hand are desirable in a context of R&D where the actor have required knowledge to facility the enactment. Additionally, MCS field interpret the concept of ICS more as interactive use of MCS than as such as interactive control system. When it comes to the connection to innovation, findings are contradictory as there are both positive and negative effects on business variables such innovation.

This work addressed the domestic environment considering this context as a complex system characterised by significant impacts in terms of resource consumption. Within the theoretical framework of Systemic Design (SD), this thesis focused on home appliances, in order to understand how to reduce the impact directly attributable to them, while optimising and simplifying daily tasks for the user. A design methodology towards environmental sustainability has been structured, by focusing on the use of data for design purposes and on creating value for the user through meaningful products. It considers the user, the product and the environment as central topics, by giving them the same relevance and the literature review is structured accordingly, investigating needs and requirements, ethical issues, but also current products and future scenarios. During my experience at TU Delft, I spent six months in the Department of Internet of Things at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Together with computer scientists, we developed a prototype to collect some missing data, establishing the importance of grounding the decision-making on reliable information. IoT and data gathering open a variety of possibilities in monitoring, accessing more precise knowledge of products and households useful for design purposes, up to understand how to fill the gap perceived by the user between needs and solutions. It considered the potential benefits of using IoT indicators to collect missing information about both the product, its use and its operating environment to address critical aspects in the design stage, thus extending products’ lifetime. This thesis highlighted the importance of building multidisciplinary design teams to investigate different classes of requirements, and the need for flexible tools to cope with complex and evolving requirements, the co-evolution of problem and solutions and investigating open-ended questions. This approach leaves room for addressing every step of the traditional life-cycle in a more circular way, shifting the focus from the life-cycle centrality of the previous century to a more complex vision about the product.

"Towards an Ontology and Canvas for Strongly Sustainable Business Models: A Systemic Design Science Exploration." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10315/20777.

An ontology describing the constructs and their inter-relationships for business models has recently been built and evaluated: the Business Model Ontology (BMO). This ontology has been used to conceptually power a popular practitioner visual design tool: the Business Model Canvas (BMC). However, implicitly these works assume that designers of business models all have a singular normative goal: the creation of businesses that are financially profitable. These works perpetuate beliefs and businesses that do not create outcomes aligned with current natural and social science knowledge about long term individual human, societal and ecological flourishing, i.e. outcomes are not strongly sustainable. This limits the applicability and utility of these works. This exploratory research starts to overcome these limitations: creating knowledge of what is required of businesses for strongly sustainable outcomes to emerge and helping business model designers efficiently create high quality (reliable, consistent, effective) strongly sustainable business models. Based on criticism and review, this research project extends the BMO artefact to enable the description all the constructs and their inter-relationships related to a strongly sustainable business model. This results in the Strongly Sustainable Business Model Ontology (SSBMO). To help evaluate the SSBMO a practitioner visual design tool is also developed: the Strongly Sustainable Business Model Canvas (SSBMC). Ontological engineering (from Artificial Intelligence), Design Science and Systems Thinking methodological approaches were combined in a novel manner to create the Systemic Design Science approach used to build and evaluate the SSBMO. Comparative analysis, interviews and case study techniques were used to evaluate the utility of the designed artefacts. Formal 3rd party evaluation with 7 experts and 2 case study companies resulted in validation of the overall approaches used and the utility of the SSBMO. A number of opportunities for improvement, as well as areas for future work, are identified. This thesis includes a number of supplementary graphics included in separate (electronic) files. The constantly changing consumer market and dramatically increasing competing environment had shorten product life cycle and increased the probability of replacing. Facing such problem and crisis, enterprises should be able to design and develop many kinds of innovative product to increase the compete ability and hence reach the goal of sustainability. In such a long duration and energy consuming process, it is not only difficult to gain breakthrough design concepts but also causing unnecessary waste of resources. In order to solve these commonly seem problems during product design and development process for enterprises, this thesis had developed a systematical design method for concept design to reach innovation. The targeted product would be analyzed and other related information would be collected first, then, it would be able to predict the future of the targeted product. Following up, the prediction would be brought to formulaize design problem solving steps to find out if the contradiction exists. Then, the formulaized problem would be brought to the contradiction matrix to find out proper direction of sub-solutions. These solutions could be combined into possible solutions. Finally, these recommend developing directions would be further developed into design concepts. With the help of this systematical innovation design process, the product design and development teams increase the efficiency of the product developing process.

A systematic approach to service design plays a crucial role in the effective development of new services. This research develops a conceptual service-design framework called design-oriented systematic inventive thinking (DSIT), a new, generalized service design approach that can be applied in the context of different, specific problems. It divides real-world design scenarios into four dimensions, and then provides an appropriate, integrated service-design approach based on TRIZ. Four types of service-design approach have been suggested, conceptualized as “Human-independent service engineering”, “Problem-clarified service engineering”, “Solution-converged service engineering”, and “Designing for service”. In these four dimensions, three phases including the problem definition phase (PD), the problem resolution phase (PR), and the solution evaluation phase (SE) are linked to the respective service-design methods, which are based on TRIZ, combined with non-TRIZ service-design methods. Using a multi-dimensional framework to depict these service design approaches for different businesses, four new service systems were designed for case companies, in order to verify the proposed service-design approaches. Using human-independent service engineering, an intelligent recommendation system for customer complaints is designed and analyzed. Using problem-clarified service engineering, the Geo-social meal service is analyzed and designed. Using solution-converged service engineering, the smart parking service is analyzed and designed. By designing for service, a cloud-based interoperable meal ordering service is analyzed and designed. Thus, the proposed DSIT approach has compatibility to gain the benefit of the characteristic of different approach. It also has extensiveness that can include other TRIZ and non-TRIZ service-design methods to develop new services.

With the development of the next-generation console, the game hardware is becoming more and more important. The motion sensors allow users to experience the virtual reality, and the force feedback devices not only can make games more interesting, but also protect users to avoid sports injuries or excessive muscle strain. Therefore, it is necessary that the new game hardware contains the basic direction control, the motion-sensing and force feedback devices. TRIZ innovative design theory can lead designers to think out of the box and accelerate the whole process. In order to avoid the sports injuries and the lack of the force feedback devices, this study will focus on researching the force feedback literatures, selecting the original mechanism, and using the TRIZ Theory’s Contradiction, Ideal Design, Substance-Field Analysis, and the CREAX Innovative Software to construct a series of force feedback devices design schemes. For confirming the feasibility of the design scheme, this study manufactures the prototype and applies for the invention patent. Achievements and contributes of this study are shown as below: 1. Construct a series of design schemes of force feedback devices for game hardware. 2. The innovative design scheme applies for the invention patent. 3. Manufacture the innovative design scheme prototype.

The intelligent robots are the top priority of the development in the state-of-the-art technology industry for advanced countries in the 21th century. The worldwide market of service-based robots has been gradually forming. The robot industry which aims at the family services has pulled all their resources to develop the service-based robots. With the urgent needs of accompanying and nursing the ill and elderly, the robots can serve as the role to look after and activate with family members, providing services of home security and medical care. Current robot technology is mostly based on the development of wheeled robots; however, foot-type robots can carry out service work on uneven terrain, so foot-type robots would be the direction of robotics development. In order to design and manufacture the foot-type robots for home care services, this paper applies TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) theory and tools to create a series of systematic innovations for the foot-type robot. First, this research starts with the issues statement. Based on the contradiction matrix of TRIZ theory, the systematic design of innovating foot-type robots is made. By employing the biped robot of primitive organization (Robovie-X), the reconfiguration and the innovation of the quadruped robots has been made. In addition, the quadruped robots have been greatly improved on their action mode with obstacle avoidance and inspection function. For the ideal part, in view of the ideal final solution and the application of scientific effects and phenomena, it is possible for their action mode to have the functions of monitoring, remote control and tracking. For the substance - field part, through the Substance - field model and the 76 standard solutions, it enables us to solve the problem of not being able to sustain the power supply consistently, causing the power shortage. Tape is the most commonly used in our daily life, but without the birth of cutter, tape is impossible to become the necessary supply in factories, families or offices around the world. Thus, the invention of the tape cutter is also a key factor in the growing tape market . There are variety of choices in shape and fuction of the cutters on the market today, but because it is used in different materials , sizes and places, so we have to buy the feasible cutters to use. This often result in unnecessary waste. In order to solve this problem, this study uses the creative problem solving of TRIZ theory and the opportunity identification analysis method to systematic carry out innovation and improvement of the tape cutter. In the study, we use the contradiction matrix, 39 engineering parameters, su-filed analysis, and 40 inventive principles to innovate the structure of the tape cutter, and keep using a series of opportunity identification methods to obtain more product design and inspire feasible solutions. Finally, we adopt the Pugh Concept Selection to evaluate the program of innovative design, and define the best innovative-design mode of the tape cutter. This paper applies the systematic design method to design a mobile and light cutter that can be used to cut different sizes of tapes and not occupy lots of space, and also convenient to carry out. This study have been published at the Seoul International Invention Exhibition in 2018 Korea, and the application of new patent in Taiwan as a test the feasibility of innovation results.

UP until now, the wire electrical discharge machine (WEDM) still lacks the flexibility to process the workpieces provided with special angles and positions, and is unable to produce the versatile and complicated mini-components. Therefore, the factories have to either reset the workpieces for reprocessing or integrate other processes into the production line and thereby complete their works. When several processes are integrated, the costs rise at the same time. In an effort to improve the flexibility and to enhance the efficiency for WEDM, this study has analyzed the patents and literatures related to WEDM and has thus developed a series of innovative proposals by the tools stated in TRIZ innovation theory, such as technical contradictions, physical contradictions, and ideal design. This study has chosen one of the proposals and then innovated the configuration for WEDM by Solid Works software. In an effort to validate the feasibility of the innovative proposal, this study has inferred a coordinate transformation matrix for the innovative proposal based upon the coordinate transformation principles and has thereby caused the wire electrode equivalent to the workpiece’s unit vector. Thus, this study has identified the rotation angles for both rotation axles. With the wire electrode’s positional vector equivalent to the workpiece’s unit vector, this study has found the distances moved by S, Y, and Z axles. In an effort to validate the accuracy of the coordinate transformation formula, this study has entered the angles and distance, which were acquired by the coordinate transformation formula, into Solid Works software in order to simulate the dynamic kinematics. With the coordinate transformation formula’s inference results consistent with the dynamic simulation’s results, this study has produced the prototype for the innovative configuration of WEDM by aluminum, PE, linear motor, and geared motor, and then simulated the electrical discharge by Styrofoam cutter-melt method. This study has presented a series of proposals, and then simulated the results obtained by the inference. Apparently, the flexibility has been improved, so has the efficiency. The results serve as a valuable reference for engineering application and the subsequent researchers.

Biological organisms, phenomena and strategies, herein referred to as biological systems, provide a rich set of analogies that can be used to inspire engineering innovation. Biologically-inspired, or biomimetic, designs are publicly viewed as creative and novel solutions to human problems. Moreover, some biomimetic designs have become so commonplace that it is hard to image life without them (e.g. velcro, airplanes). Although the biologically- inspired solutions are innovative and useful, the majority of inspiration taken from nature has happened by chance observation, dedicated study of a specific biological entity (e.g., gecko), or asking a biologist to explain the biology in simple terms. This reveals a fundamental problem of working across the engineering and biological domains. The effort and time required to become a competent engineering designer creates significant obstacles to becoming sufficiently knowledgeable about biological systems (the converse can also be said). This research aims to remove the element of chance, reduce the amount of time and effort required to developing biologically-inspired solutions, and bridge the seemingly immense disconnect between the engineering and biological domains. To facilitate systematic biologically-inspired design, a design methodology that relies on a framework of tools and techniques that bridge the two domains is established. The design tools and techniques that comprise the framework achieve: Identification of relevant biological solutions based on function; translation of identified biological systems of interest; functional representation of biological information such that it can be used for engineering design activities; and conceptualization of biomimetic engineering designs. Using functional representation and abstraction to describe biological systems presents the natural designs in an engineering context and allows designers to make connections between biological and engineered systems. Thus, the biological information is accessible to engineering designers with varying biological knowledge, but a common understanding of engineering design methodologies. This work has demonstrated the feasibility of using systematic design for the discovery of innovative engineering designs without requiring expert-level knowledge, but rather broad knowledge of many fields.

Innovation and patent are often regarded as two of the most crucial aspects of new product development. Taking into account of both patent around and design innovation during product development is one of the main topics of current academic research. Innovation methods most commonly used are the TRIZ and WOIS innovation theories. TRIZ innovation theory uses the 39 engineering parameters and 40 inventive principles for innovative research and development. However, it cannot apply a global view to the whole system. WOIS theory uses systematic approach with problem domain matrix to find contradictions and compensate for shortcomings from the TRIZ theory. This is considered a more consistent method for product innovative development. In this study, we combined the WOIS innovation theory and engineering parameters from TRIZ, using patent analysis and patent around techniques to improve existing product design concepts and development. This served to achieve the goal of both innovation and patent around design for new product development. In this paper, two cases of manual wheelchair designs with walker were investigated using the TRIZ and WOIS innovation theory during the conceptual design phase to achieve the goal of patent around design.

In order to meet driver’s lighting safety and satisfy customer’s requisition, we will probe into the headlamp development, the optic principle of headlamp design and searching for design patent of headlamp. Our research will be covered with freeform surface pattern. The apply methods include linkage, contradiction matrix, which are provided in TRIZ Theory by Altshuller. As a result, we can get a concrete scheme and a series of principles to solve problems. In order to avoid the infringement of the patents, we use TRIZ to dodge the present patents. Otherwise, six-sigma method was used to design and improve the products, services and procedures. These help us to reach quality of Six Sigma, promote quality performance and meet customer’s requisition. Finally, we use innovative scheme to simulate and analyze lighting pattern. An aluminum prototype is created to verify our design and also apply it to current market. TRIZ helps R&D quite a few. It also can get rid of tradition thinking and can speed up design. Nowadays, every enterprise can apply this method to create and improve their products and also can increase benefits. There are two concrete contributions in this paper. (1) Apply for the domestic patent: The reflector improvement of headlamp – application No. 096203329. (2)Utilize combination rotating parabolas to replace freeform surface, and the rotation angle of these parabolas can’t exceed 0.5 degree.

Traditionally, the mechanism of multi-functional wheelchair has multi degrees of freedom, and used multiple power sources to complete the multi motion function. The purpose of this thesis is to invent new multi-functional wheelchair with single degree of freedom. The multi-functional wheelchairs designed in this thesis include 1. Multi-functional wheelchair with sitting, lifting, and standing functions, and 2. Multi-functional wheelchair with sitting, lifting, standing, and lying down functions. The mechanisms proposed for multi-functional wheelchairs in this thesis have 1 degree of freedom. Hence, using only 1 power source drives the mechanism to achieve multi motion functions. The new design has the advantages of 1.simple operation, 2. high load bearing, 3.more stability, and 4 more safety. When the wheelchair standing up, the center of gravity of traditional standing wheelchair is moved forward, it needs to use more 2 wheels, the wheelchair will become six wheelchairs. In this thesis, first, by using the checklist method of Osborn, the multi-functional wheelchairs with single DOF are invented. According to theory of dimentional synthesis of mechanism, the dimentions of multi-functional wheelchair are synthesized. The center of gravity of new multi-functional wheelchair after standing still located between the front and rear wheels, no additional wheels needed. Then, by using Solidworks software, 3D drawing and engineering design of multi-functional wheelchairs are carried out. Applying SolidWorks Motion software, the kinematic analysis and simulation are carried out to ensure the security and stability in the operation. Finally, the narrow model of the prototype is manufactured to verify the theoretical results. The results of this research will enhance Taiwan''s R & D capability in the multi-functional wheelchair to enhance industrial competitiveness.

Innovation is the power to drive economic growth. At present, many innovation laws have been put forward successively. No matter product innovation, service innovation, or even process innovation, the main purpose is to improve the technical competitiveness of products and win the success of enterprises by creating more value for customers. There are many existing service innovation methods. Most of the implementation steps are based on users. A large number of innovative ideas are collected through divergent thinking. Although these methods generally describe the implementation steps, they do not explain in detail what tools should be used for each step and the relevance of the input and output information between the tools. As a result, the innovation team cannot agree on how to use the innovation methods. In addition, in the research stage of users, many innovative methods suggest that observation method, interview method or a large number of questionnaires should be adopted to solve the time-consuming and insufficient problems of observation method and interview method, and the questionnaire issuance cannot be informed of users' deeper opinions due to the formulation of questions. In the service innovation and design stage, many innovative methods suggest to generate a large number of new ideas by means of divergent thinking, brainstorm and other methods, and then to converge a large number of ideas by subjective voting, thus producing the final scheme. This method lacks objective evaluation mechanism to select the best scheme. For the existing service innovation methods, the above problems will directly affect their feasibility and innovation results. This study intends to put forward a systematic method to improve the service innovation, which includes two phases, the first phase of the user experience research, by using questionnaire and Hierarchy analysis method (Analytic Hierarchy Process, the AHP) to find users care service characteristics, and then according to these service features for users and stakeholders in-depth interviews, to find the sweet spot, spot of users and the demand insight, through questionnaire and interview can solve the problem of insufficient depth or breadth of user experience research and insights were extracted to effectively will be the user's needs; Second stage for the service innovation design, first through the brainstorming divergent thinking methods, such as to produce a large number of innovative ideas, to Kano method to objectively assess process differences between innovative solutions and satisfaction, to select the best service innovation scheme, finally to ensure the blueprint description best service innovation scheme of the work required to each step of human, system and resource, and the best service innovation scheme of establishing and import. In order to verify the feasibility of this method, this study will take yinfa tourism service innovation as an empirical study case, and explain the operation mode of the systematic service innovation method proposed by this research.

Machinery business of Taiwan plays a decisive role in the international market, especially in the machine tool business. The so called ‘machine tool’ is a necessary device for making mechanical components. According to the statistical data from ‘Taiwan Machine Tool Foundation’, the output value of Taiwan machine tool in 2007 is 4,378 million USD and possesses rank 6 in the world. It’s just less than Japan, Germany, China, Italy and Korea. In the presence of worldwide competition and for the sake of holding-and-creating customers and promoting the superiority of competition, the machinery business ought to have the capability of continuous research, innovation, mechanical design strength, machining quality, efficiency improvement, delivery date shortening, and even patent protection. In this article, a systematical design-improving method integrated with TRIZ inventing theory is brought up. Our target is the improvement of the structural design of a traditional person-experience-oriented positioner of machine tool. All the patent retrieve, market investigation, quality function development (QFD), and TRIZ invention method are proceed with a systematical group-participation open-invention design. The result reveals that the systematical open-invention design has better control effects on the functional scope, acceptance of operator and integral benefit than those of traditional close-style design.

A fundamental change in societal values and economic structures is required to address increasing pressures on ecosystems and natural resources. Transition research has developed in the last decades to analyze the co-dynamics of technological, institutional, social and economic elements in the provision of key functions such as energy, water and food supply. This doctoral dissertation provides conceptual and methodological contributions to the pro-active governance of sustainability transitions. Three research gaps are identified that are addressed in this dissertation. First, a comprehensive conceptualization of learning in sustainability transitions is currently missing that comprises learning at multiple societal levels (ranging from individuals to policy-actors). Learning concepts are often not explicitly discussed in transition research even though learning is considered as fundamental for innovation processes, niche formation and development as well as breakthrough and diffusion of innovations. Second, methods for the analysis and design of transition governance processes are lacking that specify case-specific intervention points and roles of actors in the implementation of innovations. Third, participatory modeling approaches are only applied to a limited extent in transition research despite a high potential for supporting communication and learning. The conceptualization of multi-level learning developed in this doctoral research conceptualizes learning at different societal levels as specific learning contexts ranging from individual and group contexts to organizational and policy contexts. The conceptual framework further differentiates between learning processes, intensity, objects, outcomes, subjects and factors, allowing for a more detailed analysis of learning within and across learning contexts. Thus, learning contexts can be linked by processes that involve actors from different learning contexts (e.g., community groups and policy-makers), as well as exchanges of physical aspects, institutions and knowledge (in the form of ‘learning factors’). This research has also provided a classification of model uses in transition research that supports a purposeful discussion of the opportunities of modeling and promising future research directions. The methodology developed in this doctoral research aims at the analysis and design of transition governance processes by specifying the various opportunities to contribute to sustainability transitions through purposeful action at different societal levels, as well as related roles of stakeholders in implementing such processes of change. The methodology combines different streams of previous research: 1) a participatory modeling approach to identify problem perceptions, case-specific sustainability innovations as well as related implementation barriers, drivers and responsibilities; 2) a systematic review to identify supportive and impeding learning factors from the general literature that can complement case-specific factors; and 3) a method for the analysis and design of case-specific transition governance processes. Three case studies in Canada (topic: sustainable food systems), Cyprus (water-energy-food nexus) and Germany (sustainable heating supply) have been selected to test and iteratively develop the methodology described above. The results for each case study reveal that there are learning objects (i.e., learning requirements) in all learning contexts, which underscores the importance of multi-level learning in sustainability transitions, ranging from the individual to the group, organizational and policy levels. Actors have various opportunities to actively facilitate societal transformations towards sustainable development either directly through actions at their particular societal levels (i.e., context-internal learning) or indirectly through actions that influence learning at other societal levels. In fact, most of the learning factors require cooperation across learning contexts during the implementation process. The comparing of learning factors across case studies underline the importance of several factor categories, such as ‘physical a ‘disturbance or crisis’, ‘information and knowledge’. Of the 206 factors identified by stakeholders, 40 factors are case-specific and not contained in the general, review-based factor list. This underscores the value of participatory research, as general, top-down analyses might have overlooked these case-specific factors. The methodology presented in this dissertation allows for the identification and analysis of case-specific intervention points for sustainability transitions at multiple societal levels. The methodology furthermore permits the analysis of interplay between individual, group, organizational and policy actions, which is a first step towards their coordination. The focus on sustainability innovations links the broad topic of sustainability transitions to a set of opportunities for practical interventions and overcoming their implementation barriers. The methodology presented allows for the analysis and design of these interlinkages between learning contexts. While the methodology cannot provide any ‘silver bullets’ for inducing sustainability transitions, it is flexible enough to identify an appropriate abstraction level for analyzing and designing transition governance processes. The methodology developed in this doctoral research also provides several contributions for the development of participatory modeling methods in transition research. Thus, the participatory method supports an integrated analysis of barriers and drivers of sustainability innovations, and allows application in practice and education. The concepts and methods developed in this research project allow for reflection on transition governance processes from a systemic viewpoint. Experiences in the case studies underline the applicability of the concepts and methods developed for the analysis of case-specific transition governance processes. Despite substantial differences in the geographic location, culture and topics addressed, all case studies include promising sustainability innovations and the engagement of multiple actors in their implementation. The diversity and multitude of initiatives in the case study regions provides an optimistic outlook on future opportunities for large-scale sustainability transitions.
