Повний текст джерелаAccording to the PCN, the teaching of English should contribute to the formation of inquisitive and autonomous individuals, who should be able to make use of language as social practice. This work aims at presenting a proposal to develop critical literacy through reading (KLEIMAN, 1995; SOARES, 2006) in order to fulfill this need. To reach such goal, I indicate forms to approach multimodal texts didactically through Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2003) by using the theoretical-analytical framework and the categories offered by Systemic Functional Linguistics. The relevance of studying texts with images at school is the possibility to bring to this environment the discussion of how the two semioses express different ways to access knowledge. Besides, although much has been researched about teaching reading in English (RAMOS, 2004; BAMBIRRA, 2007; VIAN JR., 2009) and, on the other hand, on how to teach reading images (SARDELICH, 2006: OLIVEIRA, 2006), there are few works that encompass critical reading in foreign languages integrating the verbal and the visual aspects in the production of meanings. To investigate the linguistic and visual choices and their relationship, which is responsible for the messages to be negotiated with the reader, seventeen texts were studied, which were divided into four groups of multimodal genres: five magazine articles, three movie reviews, five comic strips and four print advertisements. They have been examined separately through some of the following categories within the three metafunctions: ideational, mainly through the analysis of Processes (HALLIDAY & MATTHIESSEN, 2004; KRESS & VAN LEEUWEN, 2006) and the Representation of Social Actors (VAN LEEUWEN, 1997 e 2008); interpersonal, by the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN e WHITE, 2005) and the visual instances of Contact, Social Distance and Attitude (KRESS & VAN LEEUWEN, 2006); textual, only in the images, regarding Salience, Informational Value and Framing (KRESS & VAN LEEUWEN, 2006). From the description and discussion of the results of the analysis in each genre, I suggest some activities to exemplify how to implement the principles of LSF in the school context. The construction of activities was based on Ramos article (2004) about the use of genres at school. Therefore, the work with the corpora was divided into three moments, using each genre at a time: 1) description of the genre in its situational context and some comments on its cultural context; 2) analysis of the corpus applying the LSF and 3) exemplification of activities made from the analysis. Results have pointed to the complementation between visual and verbal elements in the construction of meanings and the theoretical-analytical framework used has proven to be a generous starting point for the development of critical reading activities

General introduction -- A multimodal analysis of the 2006 Mexican presidential campaign billboards -- Study 2: Discourses of obligation and prohibition within an institutional setting -- Study 3: Gatekeeping practices at the LEMO: a multimodal analysis -- General conculsions.
This is a thesis composed of three studies linked by a common critical multimodal approach to the analysis of the data. Fairclough's (1992, 1995) three-dimensional framework was drawn on in order to explore the social practice, discursive practice and text dimensions of the discourses in question. The first two studies focus on printed texts in Mexican Spanish, whereas the third study addresses spoken interaction in English with occasional code switching to Spanish. -- Study 1: A Multimodal Analysis of the 2006 Mexican Presidential Campaign Billboards - This is a joint study (with my colleague Michael Witten and approved by my supervisor and the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie) which analyzes the political discourse of the multimodal and multisemiotic texts that the three major political parties involved in the 2006 Mexican presidential elections produced and extensively distributed through the medium of public billboards. We investigate how these parties express their particular ideologies, construct and convey social identities and relationships, and construct relations of power between themselves and the readers/viewers of these texts, through the medium of billboards. As indicated in the preamble, the methodological framework addresses these issues drawing on Fairclough's (1992, 1995) three-dimensional model of analysis while employing a variety of qualitative techniques, tools, and approaches. -- Study 2: Discourses of obligation and prohibition within an institutional setting - Following the theme of multimodal critical discourse analysis, this study examines the institutionalized discourses of obligation and prohibition at the Library of the Language Faculty (LEMO)*of a public university in Mexico. Six different texts pertaining to various genres ranging from a protocol to notices were examined. Multiple qualitative methodologies and tools such as those drawn from ethnography, critical discourse analysis, and systemic functional linguistics are utilized in the analysis of the data. Power relations between the institution and the library users are examined as well as the conditions of text production and reception, the latter through an ethnographic component. An emphasis is placed on the linguistic text. -- Study 3: Gatekeeping practices at the LEMO - This study investigates one of the gatekeeping practices at the Language Faculty of a public university in Mexico (see above). The particular practice concerned consists of the professional examinations (vivas) that students have to take in order to obtain their degrees of 'Licenciatura en Lenguas Modernas' (BEd in Modern Languages) in the English Teaching section of the university. This study focuses on the professional discourse(s) utilized by both candidates and examiners by means of analyzing the texts of four recorded professional examinations. This study chiefly draws on Goffman's (1959) dramaturgical concepts of 'frontstage' and 'backstage', where the analysis of the frontstage work addresses the Question-and-Answer section of the examinations, and the analysis of the backstage work addresses the subsequent deliberations among the examiners concerning the performance of the candidates. Multiple qualitative methodologies and tools are again drawn upon, such as ethnographic analysis, interactional sociolinguistics and critical discourse analysis. (* Facultad de Lenguas)

Повний текст джерелаThis study investigated whether the conception present in the Replicators Theory, expressed through the concept of meme (DAWKINS, 1979), could be a compatible model to be transducted and feasible to explain the propagation of memes in the substratum of social media. In the scope of local studies, Recuero (2006) suggested a model for such transduction. Reflecting on Recueros epistemological positioning, the present Linguistics-oriented research (HALLIDAY, 1987) examined the authors (2006) transduction through two investigative steps: Conceptual and Compositional Analysis, respectively. Those two investigative steps followed the conceptions presented by Dennett (1995), Blackmore (2002), and Tyler (2011b; 2013b). By departing from the concept of memeplex (BLACKMORE, 2002), this work understands memes, in the substratum of digital/social media, as practices of production and distribution through language and media. Moving to a third investigative step Relational Analysis this study investigated the relations and connexions created by internet users whilst they spread memetic phenomena through several unities of propagation, i.e.: the local phenomenas memetic expressions (from #Tenso and Que deselegante), and the memetic images (from Nana em desastres). This research used two corpora of memetic expressions (5275 posts coming from or forwarded to Twitter.com 83,655 tokens), and one bilingual corpus (Portuguese/English) of memetic images (a total of 134 images coming from Tumblr.com and Facebook.com). To analyse the corpora of memetic expressions this investigation used the methodology of Corpus Linguistics (BERBER-SARDINHA, 2004; SHEPHERD, 2009; SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2012, 2013b, 2013c). To examine the multimodal corpus of memetic images this study suggested a methodology called Propagatory Analysis. The aim of this research was to investigate if those units of propagation and the linguistic/media practices they transmit, evolved only via memetic/media aspects, and presenting an internalist pattern of propagation (DAWKINS, 1979; 1982), as Recuero (2006) argued. The findings of the present study suggested that, at the purpose level, the local phenomena investigated didnt evolve through an internalist (or homogeneous) pattern of propagation. Those patterns were of externalist (heterogeneous) nature. Furthermore, the memetic constitutive principles of evolution such as fecundity, longevity (DAWKINS, 1979; 1982), along with the media constitutive principle of reach (RECUERO, 2006) have been highly influential over propagations of externalist pattern. Conversely, the memetic constitutive principle of fidelity (DAWKINS, 1979; 1982) was the least influential in such externalist patterns of propagation. Fidelity was undermined by two linguistic constitutive principles that emerged, empowered by the principle of design (DENNETT, 1995). Firstly, appeared the linguistic constitutive principle of functionality (memes evolve because they can express different purposes), followed by the principle of linguistic reach (memes can address animate/inanimate items; and Internet users in their native or foreign languages)

This research aims to analyze the verbal and non-verbal texts that make up the openings of the units of the High Up English didactic collection. Approved by the National Textbook Plan - PNLD 2015, recommended for high school, organized by the authors Reinildes Dias; Leina Juca and Raquel Faria. For this, the Systemic-Functional Grammar (HALLIDAY, 1994) ; (HALLIDAY and MATTHIESSEN, 2004) is in coherence with the multimodal texts from the perspective of theVisual Design Grammar (KRESS and VAN LEEUWEN, 2000). Based on these authors, it is hoped to find out if the study of the English language in a public school in the city of Pires do Rio - Goiás offers a variety of interpretations through the engravings and gives the students, according to the theme of the unit, reflect and discuss the images and phrases presented on said pages of unit openings. In addition to the multimodal analysis, the verbal that follow the unit openings were analyzed from the METHOD of Interpersonal Metaphor and analysis of the occurrences of the processes by the Ideational Metaphor, through the computer program called WordSmith Tools 7. It is a qualitative and quantitative research (DORNYEI, 2007) that relates theory, context and research questions. For the analysis of the corpus that composes this study, the data were selected, in consonance with the theoretical contribution of Visual Design Linguistic and Systemic- Functional Linguistic.
Esta pesquisa objetivou analisar os textos, verbais e não-verbais, que compõem as aberturas das unidades da coleção didática de inglês High Up, aprovado pelo Plano Nacional do Livro Didático – PNLD 2015, recomendado para o Ensino Médio, organizado pelas autoras Reinildes Dias; Leina Juca e Raquel Faria. Para tanto é utilizada a Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (HALLIDAY, 1994); (HALLIDAY e MATTHIESSEN, 2004) esta em coadunação com textos multimodais na perspectiva da Gramática de Design Visual (KRESS e VAN LEEUWEN, 2000). Com base nesses autores, espera-se averiguar se o estudo da língua inglesa em uma escola pública da cidade de Pires do Rio - Goiás disponibiliza uma variedade de interpretações, por meio das gravuras e oportuniza aos alunos, de acordo com o tema da unidade, refletir e discutir sobre as imagens e frases apresentadas das referidas páginas de aberturas das unidades. Além das análises multimodais, os textos verbais que seguem as aberturas de unidades foram analisadas a partir do sistema de MODO da Metafunção Interpessoal e análise das ocorrências dos processos pela Metafunção Ideacional, por meio do programa computacional WordSmith Tool 7. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quali- quantitativa (DORNYEI, 2007) que relaciona teoria, contexto e perguntas de pesquisa. Para a análise do corpus que compõe este estudo, os dados foram selecionados, em consonância com o aporte teórico da Linguística de Design Visual e da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional.

Повний текст джерелаHow to recognize, characterize and differentiate the genders multimodal comic strip, cartoon, cartoons and caricature? How relationships are established genres such genre-support? Based on the theoretical and methodological studies of gender linked to Systemic-Functional Linguistics – SFL – (HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1989) and comics (RAMOS, 2009; MCCLOUD, 1995; EISNER, 1999), we tried to reflect these issues in order to: (1) describe the Generic Structure Potential (GSP) genres strip comics, cartoon, cartoon and caricature; (2) characterize the support of the genres in focus from the perspective of SFL, and (3) investigate the relationship between gender-holder in the genres mentioned above. In order to fulfill these research objectives, we, through qualitative research, from the analysis of texts and images, study the book and its supporters following genres: (a) Aline (I, II, III), by Adão Iturrusgarai ( 2007, 2009a, 2009b), with the comics strips, (b) So Crawls Humanity, by Allan Sieber (2006), with the cartoons, (c) Risk Factors, by Júlio Erthal (1998), with the cartoons, and (d) Caricatures and caricatured, by Mario Mendez, with the cartoons. From our research, we conclude that it is difficult to differentiate the genders comics strip, cartoon, cartoons and caricatures, because they present the same variable mode (written/ multimodal) and tenor (author versus reader) of registers, where as the variable field of register is respectful, which thus elects stages of completion for each specific genre, what sets them apart. As for the gender-support ratio, we can say that the support – as an organization of language material, entered in register – elects elements of realization that qualify as material support required in a given culture and individually with their peers, these elements we call grafic elements that take place according to the relationship author versus editor (a).
Como reconhecer, caracterizar e diferenciar os gêneros multimodais tira cômica, cartum, charge e caricatura? Como se estabelecem as relações gênero-suporte nesses gêneros? Pautados no aporte teórico-metodológico dos estudos de gêneros vinculada à Lingüística Sistêmico-Funcional – LSF – (HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1989) e aos quadrinhos (RAMOS, 2009; MCCLOUD, 1995; EISNER, 1999), procuramos refletir essas questões de forma a: (1) descrever a Estrutura Potencial do Gênero (EPG) dos gêneros multimodais tira cômica, cartum, charge e caricatura; (2) caracterizar o suporte dos gêneros multimodais em foco a partir da perspectiva da LSF; e (3) investigar a relação gênero-suporte nos gêneros supracitados. A fim de cumprirmos estes objetivos de pesquisa, procuramos, por meio da pesquisa qualitativa, a partir da análise de textos e imagens, estudar os seguintes suportes livro e seus gêneros: (a) Aline (I, II, III), de Adão Iturrusgarai (2007, 2009a, 2009b), com as tiras cômicas; (b) Assim Rasteja a Humanidade, de Allan Sieber (2006), com os cartuns; (c) Fatores de Risco, de Júlio Erthal (1998), com as charges; e (d) Caricaturas e Caricaturados, de Mário Mendez, com as caricaturas. De nossa pesquisa, concluímos que há dificuldade de se diferenciar os gêneros tira cômica, cartum, charge e caricatura, pois estes apresentam a mesma variável modo (escrito/multimodal) e relações (autor versus leitor) de registro; já a variável campo de registro ocorre de maneira diferente, o que, portanto, elege estágios de realização específicos para cada gênero, o que os diferencia. Quanto à relação gênero-suporte, podemos dizer que o suporte – como organização material da linguagem, inscrita no registro – elege elementos de realização material que o qualificam como suporte pretendido em uma dada cultura e o individualiza perante seus pares, a esses elementos chamamos de elementos gráficos que se realizam em função da relação autor versus editor(a).
