Genograms are a widely used tool, well grounded in systemic theory. However the claims made in the literature regarding the therapeutic use and effects of the genogram have not been empirically explored or verified. This study therefore aimed to examine the extent to which the use and effects of genograms in clinical practice reflect the claims made in the literature. This study asked: what therapeutic tasks the genogram is used for, the specific pathways the genogram facilitates those tasks, and the mechanisms salient to the genogram that adds to clinical practice. Ten qualified Family Therapists participated in semi-structured interviews discussing their experiences. A Thematic Analysis was conducted. Five themes were identified: therapist-family joining; systemic exploration; therapist hypothesizing; family perturbation through cognitive change; family perturbation through experiential and behaviour change. This study found that genograms were used in some of the ways described in the literature: engagement, information gathering, hypothesizing and intervention aimed at cognitive change. The usefulness of the genogram was found to extend beyond ‘engagement’ and ‘information gathering’ to ‘therapist-family joining’ and ‘systemic exploration’ respectively. However, this study did not find the genogram was used to explore emotions, nor as an intervention aimed directly at behaviour change; instead, change at the experiential level was reported. The pathways the genogram facilitates therapeutic tasks are delineated, as are the mechanisms salient to the genogram that adds to clinical practice. Recommendations for further research were made. This included repeating this study with therapists from different training backgrounds, as well as undertaking a quantitative study examining genogram outcomes in terms of a measurable change in presenting problems.

Systemic family therapy is an approach to psychological therapy that is increasingly being offered to adults with learning disabilities and their families. To date there has been no published evaluation of the degree to which this is an approach that is effective in alleviating distress for this client group. The present study aimed to explore the experiences of adults with learning disabilities and their family members, who had attended systemic family therapy together. It also aimed to investigate whether it was an experience that had been helpful and in what ways, if any it impacted on their lives. Ten families and six adults with learning disabilities were interviewed about their experiences of attending systemic family therapy. The transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participants had mixed views about the degree to which systemic therapy had been helpful to them. Some family members saw it as having a positive impact on their views about and ways of approaching particular issues. However, for other families systemic therapy had not offered the kind of help they had expected and the experience was seen as relatively insignificant, vague or confusing. For the participants with learning disabilities there was a general sense that the opportunity to talk about difficulties was seen as valuable. However, the degree to which some of these participants felt they had a voice was limited. A combination of feeling pressure to 'know' what to say, and the presence of other family members in the meetings made it difficult for them to have their say. These findings suggest that although systemic family therapy can be helpful, particular aspects of the process may need to be adapted to ensure it is an approach that is accessible for this client group and their families.

This research focused on how school principals in the Limpopo Province apply induction to the newly appointed teachers. The school principals, SMTs and senior teachers are responsible for inducting and mentoring newly appointed teachers with the purpose of developing them professionally and to help them adjust to the school environment. Principals play a major role in seeing to it that newly appointed educators do not feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the teaching profession and the practice of teaching learners. The study aims at exploring the educator experiences of the induction process as well as to explore the process followed by principals in inducting educators. The research methodology used in this study is a qualitative case study which is explorative and descriptive by nature. Data was collected through one-on-one interviews, which involved principals and newly appointed teachers. The collected data was analysed and categorised into specific themes. The findings from data revealed numerous challenges that principals and newly appointed teachers experience during the induction process. Findings revealed that the induction process was not adequate and that the time allocated for induction was very little. There were neither standardised and continuous induction programmes nor educational support mechanisms to support newly appointed educators. Recommendations were that schools should be provided with the opportunity to review the induction process in line with the systemic changes in education in order to develop educators professionally.

The purpose of this research study has been to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experience of systemic lupus erythematosus from the perspective of the person who has the condition. A qualitative interpretive phenomenological approach was adopted influenced by Heidegger (1962) with emphasis on existential and interpretive dimensions over time. This comprehensive study involved a varied and diverse sample of thirty-two participants to allow differing experiences and multiple voices to be heard. The main data collection method was multiple, unstructured interviews. The participants also used a variety of other methods of their own choice including journals, art, music and photography to express ‘what lupus means to you?’ An integrated approach was used combining both the media of the participant’s choice, with an in-depth unstructured interview discussing their media. These varied data collection methods allowed valuable insights into the participant’s everyday world. The study used Wertz’s (1983) method of analysis. Three main findings were identified including, self-doubt and doubt, entrapment and coping and regaining resilience. Self-doubt and doubt explores the participant’s ongoing uncertainty about their symptoms, embodiment and condition and the continual doubts which they experience from others regarding the reality of their illness experience. Entrapment explores the many constraints and barriers that the participants experience in everyday life including the disease itself which enforces loss of control, continual change and disruption, challenges to self identity and integrity, relationships with others and themselves in terms of existential possibilities and goals. There were also a multitude of constraints and barriers imposed on the participants from health services and organisations. All these experiences engender the feeling of a ‘nothing disease’, a feeling of losing themselves. Coping and regaining resilience explored the wealth of coping strategies used within the participant’s everyday life and the ways they had been able to overcome adversity and find ways of moving forward regaining resilience. The study has identified multiple things which negatively impact upon those living with lupus, as well as positively impacts on a person’s ability to live and cope in everyday life. This opens up possible ways for reducing these constraints and that would have a positive impact on the person living with SLE. These constraints indicate some of the priorities health services and organisations should be focusing on to assist those with lupus to regain a more homelike being-in-the-world. The findings have real implications for the development of health care delivery which is person centred, designed around real needs and enables an improved quality of life. This study has been a further important step towards gaining an in-depth understanding of the everyday being-in-the-world of SLE.

Doutoramento em Linguística
Tourism is growing and is becoming more competitive. Destinations need to find elements which demonstrate their uniqueness, the singularity which allows them to differentiate themselves from others. This struggle for uniqueness makes economies become more competitive and competition is a central element in the dynamics of Tourism. Technology is also an added value for tourism competitiveness, as it allows destinations to become internationalised and known worldwide. In this scenario, research has increased as a means to study Tourism trends in fields such as sociology and marketing. Nevertheless, there are areas in which there is not much research done and which are fundamental: these are the areas concerned with identities, communication and interpersonal relations. In this regard, Linguistics has a major role for different reasons: firstly, it studies language itself and through it, communication, secondly, language conveys culture and, thirdly, it is by enriching language users that innovation in Tourism and in knowledge, as a whole, is made possible. This innovation, on the other hand, has repercussions in areas such as management, internationalisation and marketing as well. It is, therefore, the objective of this thesis to report on how learning experiences take place in Tourism undergraduate English language classes as well as to give an account of enhanced results in classes where mobile learning was adopted. In this way, an alliance between practice and research was established. This is beneficial for the teaching and learning process because by establishing links between research based insight and practice, the outcome is grounded knowledge which helps make solid educational decisions. This research, therefore, allows to better understand if learners accept working with mobile technologies in their learning process. Before introducing any teaching and learning approach, it was necessary to be informed, as well, of how English for tourism programmes are organised. This thesis also illustrates through the premises of Systemic Functional Linguistics that language use can be enhanced by using mobile technology in Tourism undergraduate language classes.

Stemmet, Leatia. "A thematic inquiry into the dominant cultural and familial factors in South African coloured people's experience of anorexia nervosa : a qualitative study." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23869.

Анотація:
This study seeks to explore anorexia nervosa as experienced within the South African coloured community in the specific. It represents an examination of themes within the participants’ depictions, discovering those themes that concur with existent literature, as well as discerning novel themes within the target group. Literature proves to yield varied results with regard to anorexia as presented in diverse cultures. Sufficient awareness is lacking within the South African context, where a scarcity of available literature that explores the experiences of the coloured anorexic individual necessitates the need for the current study. The contributing factors are viewed to involve societal, cultural, and familial aspects, all of which are situated within a systemic frame of reference. Systems theory provides the foundation within which these factors are explored, aiming to provide the reader with in-depth knowledge as to the functioning of the anorectic patient. It should be noted that these factors are interconnected, influencing each other in a circular manner. Attention is awarded to not only larger systems of societal and cultural influences, but also serves to encompass the functioning of the anorectic within the familial system. The reciprocity that exists within and between sub-systems is investigated, with the focus being the interrelatedness between members. Recursive feedback and associated processes are examined as they relate to the development and maintenance of anorexia. A qualitative research design was applied, where semi-structured interviews served as the chosen data collection strategy. Interviews were conducted at the hospital where they received treatment, and aimed to extract the meanings inherent in the participants’ experiences. A limited availability of diagnosed coloured anorexic individuals resulted in two willing participants partaking in the study. Thematic networks enabled the researcher to explore their representations in depth, leading to the subsequent organising of themes for further analysis. Two global themes emerged upon examination, the first of which was identified as “familial impact and patterns”, consisting of organising themes of relational positioning and interactional processes. Organising themes of expectations and internal emotional states constitute the second global theme of “control”. These themes are supported by a variety of basic themes, all of which serve to enhance the understanding of the organising themes, contributing to the respective global themes. Extensive exploration of the discovered themes followed, with the investigation proceeding within a systems theory framework. A conclusive discussion serves the purpose of bringing the exploration to a close. Relevant literature is incorporated into the discussion, providing the reader with an integrated understanding of the findings of the study within the broader field of anorexia nervosa. Copyright

den, Dunnen Wendy. "A Systemic Analysis of the Child Welfare System: Understanding the Strengths and Needs of In-Home and Out-Of-Home Children and Examining the Role of Foster Child Factors on the Fostering Experience." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35671.

Анотація:
This dissertation addresses gaps in the child welfare literature from a systemic perspective. The extant literature focuses primarily on children in care, which excludes 90% of children and families involved with the system. In addition, foster parent retention has become an area of primary concern because there are fewer individuals who are willing to foster. Research that examines all children involved with the child welfare system and ways to improve foster parent experiences is imperative to address these areas of need. The two studies herein address these gaps in the literature by examining children who are in contact with the child welfare system but largely remain out of care, children who are in care, and foster caregivers. The first study compared two groups of children in the Ontario child welfare system: those who remain with their natural family and those in out-of-home care. The emotional and behavioural functioning, prosocial behaviour, education, health, and resources (internal and external) of these two groups of children were examined and relatively few significant differences were identified. However, it was found that, despite having comparable mental health and educational functioning, children who remained in their natural homes had significantly fewer external resources than children in out-of-home care. Children in out-of-home care may have increased access to community resources despite having similar needs to children who remain in their natural home environments. Additional research is needed to replicate and better understand these findings so that the child welfare system can best meet the needs of its children. The second study examined how foster child characteristics, as well as other foster parent and agency factors, impact Canadian foster parents’ experience of fostering, particularly related to agency workers, the fostering system, training, and foster children and their placements. Results identified that foster children’s needs and maltreatment histories, as reported by foster parents, were not significantly associated with perceptions about fostering. The factors that were the most highly associated with positive perceptions about fostering were increased practical and emotional support. These findings indicate that child welfare agencies can improve foster parents perceptions about fostering by providing sufficient practical and emotional support. A monitoring system that allows foster parents to provide regular feedback would be beneficial in continuing to evaluate their fostering experiences, assess the impact of interventions targeting foster parent support, and address any areas of concern. As a whole, the results of this dissertation highlight the importance of providing both children and foster parents in the child welfare system with appropriate supports that promote positive child functioning and foster parent experiences.

This research used interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology to explore the experiences of care staff who attended systemic consultations within an Intellectual Disability (ID) service. A systematic literature review revealed limited research in the area of systemic approaches used with people with IDs and their networks. Research questions encompassed 'How do care staff experience systemic consultations that they have attended in ID services'?, 'What do care staff find helpful in systemic consultations'?, and, 'What do care staff find unhelpful in systemic consultations'?. Seven participants were interviewed, and interview data was transcribed and analysed using IPA. Five superordinate themes emerged; 'Not knowing what to expect; it was something different', 'Our relationships improved', 'An outside person shone a new light enabling us to think and work differently', 'Making sense of what we have achieved', and 'They made us feel validated'. The research findings highlighted important clinical implications. These included a need for the context to be 'warmed' and relational reflexivity (Bunham, 2005) to be applied in order to help care staff prepare for systemic consultations and feel supported. Future research directions are also discussed in order to develop the evidence-base for systemic approaches within ID services.

It is predicted that the number of people living with dementia worldwide will increase to 135.5 million by 2050 (World Health Organization, 2016). Moreover, the majority of people living with dementia are cared for within a community setting, primarily by their partner or family members. As a result of providing care individuals can experience a deterioration in their subjective psychological wellbeing, physical health and relationships. Consequently, the overall aim of this thesis was to explore the emotional and systemic experiences of having a partner with dementia. Specifically, a meta-synthesis was conducted to review the current understanding of the experiences of individuals whose partner is in long term care. The review synthesised the finding of thirteen qualitative studies using a meta-ethnographic approach (Noblit & Hare, 1988). As a result, four themes were identified which included; i) a continuation of social isolation; ii) challenges to planning for the future; iii) embracing the changing boundaries of marriage and iv) negotiating a new sense of self. Consequently the review highlighted the process of identity and role transition which individuals experience when their partner is living in long term care. Furthermore, a study was conducted to explore the experience of self-conscious emotions (e.g. shame, guilt and pride) in individuals living with their partners who have dementia. Specifically, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight partners living in the community. Moreover, the interviews were transcribed and the data analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. As a result, three themes emerged; ‘guilt as a consequence of marriage beliefs and motivator of caring behaviour’, ‘discussing dementia elevates embarrassment but decreases guilt’ and ‘difficulty of feeling proud of caring within the traditional boundaries of marriage’. Consequently, the study acknowledged the impact of social expectations on individual’s experience of self-conscious emotions and subsequently their behaviour.

Si giunge così a concludere che la filosofia, se intesa come esercizio libero e costante del pensiero complesso, può costituire un valido strumento di dialogo e di ricerca della verità.
Starting from the observation that the principle of disjunction reigning among the different fields of knowledge loses sight of the unity of the human fact, proposed, in return, is a systemic and complex vision of man himself, which can be properly handled only by a multidisciplinary approach to the issue. Investigating the complex method proposed by Morin and also highlighting critical points, we observe how it can be applied to philosophy, understood as a philosophical counseling, finding in it a significant approach to existential questions that characterize the contemporary man. Achenbach's considerations are read, then, in fact, in the light of the professional experience of the author. This leads to the conclusion that philosophy, if understood as an unhindered and free exercise away from the complex thought, may be a valuable tool for dialogue and the search for truth.

Does Systemic Family Therapy (SFT) make sense to general adult psychiatrists? SFT is both a theoretical position and a form of psychotherapy. It has been evolving within mental health practice in the UK since the 1950’s. Though it is now to be found more often in child and adolescent mental health services, it has its roots in adult mental health. This in-depth qualitative study is an investigation of how registered psychiatrists working in adult services in the UK make sense of SFT. As the training and experiences of SFT vary for psychiatrists working in adult mental health services, this study explores those experiences, and the meaning psychiatrists have of them, including what they have taken into current working practice. This study therefore attempts to contribute to our understanding of the relation between the disciplines of psychiatry and SFT, and how psychiatrists use SFT in their practice. The research used semi-structured interviews with six qualified psychiatrists working in adult services within a London Mental Health Trust to explore the lived experiences each had of SFT. These interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The participants welcomed the opportunity to share and think about SFT in their practice and experience. The four main themes that emerged from the analysis were The Past in the Present and the Future, the impact and relevance of SFT training; Proximity and distance, exploring the range and limits of accessing SFT concepts and provision; Anxiety and Uncertainty; Position of SFT in mental health services. These master themes explore the participant’s recall of their experience of SFT both in their psychiatric training and in their subsequent working practice. They illuminate how these experiences relate to psychiatrists’ sense of SFT as a broader set of theories about human relations and mental health. The findings highlight the different ways psychiatrists made sense of, and utilized, SFT in their practice. The analysis of the interviews also reveals support for the trend towards incorporation of systemic thinking in mental health practice and training more generally. The discussion focuses on the aspects of nostalgic remembrance of experiences that no longer feel accessible within psychiatric practice; the experience of learning as a mental health practitioner; and the embeddedness of SFT in present work and the workplace, in relation to existing literature and theory. The conclusion offers reflections on the research process and insights into the applicability of the findings to mental health training, service development, and particularly how SFT thinking and skills can be taught in a more accessible way to other mental health professionals. Objective: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a multi‐system disease that predominately affects women. Considering the lack of data on health related quality of life (HRQoL) especially in sub‐ Saharan Africa, we undertook a literature review on HRQoL of SLE patients in developing countries to collate the existing evidence and identify information gaps. A mixed methods qualitative and quantitative study of lived experiences of South African women with SLE was performed. Methods: A literature search was conducted on medical databases using MeSH terms pertaining to HRQoL amongst SLE patients in the developing or low income countries to identify articles published between January 1975 and February 2018. The main study included 25 consenting SLE patients attending two tertiary hospitals in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Individual in‐depth interviews, using a topic guide, were conducted and analysed using NVivo software. In addition, participants completed the Short Form‐36 (SF‐36), Functional Assessment Instrument (FAI) and functional assessment of chronic illness therapy (FACIT) for fatigue questionnaires. The questionnaires were analysed per each tool's scoring method and SPSS software was used to calculate mean, standard deviations and correlations. Results The review of 31 articles, from 11 countries indicated that SLE women have a poor general HRQoL. In addition, we found relationships between disease factors including disease activity, organ damage, functioning, and mental health. Poor socioeconomic status worsened SLE outcomes by limiting patients' access to health care and psychosocial services. In the main study, the majority (72.0%) were black Africans, unemployed (76.0%), with low formal educational level and singlehood status (72.0%). The mean (SD) mental and physical composite SF‐36 scores were poor (50.9 (22.1) and 49.1 (20.5) respectively), and 68.0% of women had FACIT scores of severe fatigue. The mean (SD) FAI was 1.33 (0.8), showing that activities of daily living (ADL) were performed with difficulty. Major themes expressed were fatigue, pain, impaired functioning, depression, pregnancy, aesthetic concerns and sexuality issues. Disease chronicity, fatigue and pain were described by many participants as ‘taking over life' and impacting on performing ADL and career opportunities contributing to indigence. Negative pregnancy outcomes were frequently exacerbated by poor sexual relationships and miscommunication between patient and health care workers. Lack of understanding of SLE by patients, community and family as well as suicidal ideations and depressive symptoms were expressed. Although the quantitative tools measured these aspects, they were unable to explore complexities such as limitations in job acquisition, suicidal ideations, disease understanding and support systems. Conclusion This study underscores the complex, chronic and challenging life experiences, often exacerbated by poverty, of SA women with SLE. Quantitative tools may be inadequate in capturing important aspects of HRQoL that emerged from the qualitive interviews. Awareness of these limitations, together with psycho‐social support and education, might improve HRQoL. This thesis recommends multi‐centred, interventional longitudinal studies that incorporate mixed methods and focus on strategies to improve the negative outcomes in SLE.

The challenge of predicting consumer behaviour is widely considered by the literature as a rather daunting, but worthwhile task. Which manager or academic would not be interested in using or developing a framework enabling one to predict future behaviour better than existing measurements? Refering to the old saying, stating that ‘only what gets measured, gets managed’, indicating what the literature addresses as a need to track the influence of change through measurements. In order to address my research question and explore the proposition ‘Can a measurement of service quality based on consumer experience be a better predictor of consumer behaviour?’ this paper examines the existing literature in two fields of literature. On the one hand I will be investigating studies in the context of existing measurements of service quality to assess the first part of my research question to determine the ‘status quo’, application and characteristics of the literature on measurements of service quality. On the other hand the paper will select, appraise, and synthesize the relevant literature on consumer behaviour to address the second part of the research question, if, and if yes, how the phenomenon of consumer experience could be the foundation for a measurement of service quality capable of predicting consumer behaviour better than existing measurements of service quality. By systematically reviewing the existing literature I am aiming on contributing to the literature addressing the challenges of predicting consumer behaviour.

This thesis maps the growth of the use of internet technologies in randomised controlled trials in health care and public health, and explores the methodological and ethical issues that arise from their use from the perspective of researchers and participants. Online clinical trials are growing in number, and claim to offer benefits for researchers and participants, providing solutions to some of the inherent problems associated with traditional trials. However, little is known about how many internet-based trials have been conducted, what methodological research has been undertaken, or what impact the new technologies might have on researcher or participant experience. The thesis followed a step-by-step approach, using information science, research synthesis, and qualitative methods. The creation of a database of internet-based clinical trials established that they have grown rapidly in number, use internet technologies primarily to deliver an intervention, predominantly in behavioural, mental health, or life-style public health settings. A two-stage systematic review, comprising a descriptive map and a qualitative synthesis, established what is known about the methods, conduct or participant experience in internet-based trials. A qualitative primary study was then carried out, based on the findings of the review, to further explore the views, attitudes and experiences of researchers, participants and the public, into the motivations, benefits or barriers to taking part in internet-based clinical trials. Themes emerging from the research suggest complex interactions between design and technology, particularly in the area of participant characteristics and choice; convenience versus intrusion; impact of time and place; the pace of change and impact of societal changes in the use of technology. A range of ethical considerations emerged, including the nature of informed consent, ethical approval, and the need for a systematic approach to patient and public involvement. Recommendations are made to help inform and improve research practice in the digital age.

Many international studies have been conducted on paediatric bipolar disorder, but few research studies have been conducted on parenting a child diagnosed with bipolar disorder, both on an international and national level. The researcher utilised Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory as the theoretical framework in exploring and describing this research field. The study has been conducted by means of a systematic review and all of the articles included in the review examined some aspect of parenting and paediatric bipolar disorder. The articles were systematically assessed, and six themes emerged which include: paediatric bipolar on the rise; the effects of paediatric bipolar disorder, post-paediatric bipolar disorder; managing paediatric bipolar disorder is a family responsibility; foundations for effective parenting; and supporting parents of a paediatric bipolar patient.

Informal carers provide the majority of direct care to older Australians and play an essential role in assisting older people with complex care needs to remain living in their own homes. With greater emphasis on the community as a more appropriate site for responding to and managing the needs of older people, carers are increasingly faced with systemic responsibilities, including coordination of fragmented services and providers across multifaceted health and aged care systems and negotiation of treatment and supports. Consequently, this work may be perceived by carers as burdensome. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of carers of community-dwelling older adults in undertaking the systemic work of caring. Specifically, the aim was to explore their experiences of managing and coordinating treatment and supports across multiple services and systems. The concept of Burden of Treatment was used to understand the work of navigating, negotiating and managing care of the older person, how carers made sense of this, and what personal resources they drew on. A descriptive phenomenological approach was taken to guide the research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 carers of community-dwelling older adults with complex care needs. Giorgi’s phenomenological data analysis methods (1997) was utilised for the data analysis. Two main themes were derived from the analysis, each comprising three sub-themes. The first theme, Becoming part of the caring system, comprised: (a) Entering the caring system, (b) A sense of obligation and duty, and (c) Work at the nexus of present and future. The second major theme, Mastering the caring system, comprised: (a) Making connections, (b) Activating the management plan, and (c) Voicing and advocating needs in the caring system. Participants felt a sense of expectation and responsibility from others, including family and health and aged care providers to take on the caring work. Many perceived they had no alternative but to respond to systemic demands when seeking to manage the needs of the older person and described the challenge of this work as managing multiple and complex organisational and administrative processes across different systems while locating, accessing and coordinating services for the older person. The findings showed an experience of being adrift and having to piece together disjointed pathways. Participants also described the work of trying to make systems more responsive to the older person for a better outcome. Furthermore, the findings illustrated the varied skills required to master the systemic work, including administrative, communication, advocacy, problem-solving and negotiation abilities. Some carers drew on personal resources, robustness and abilities while others often felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to proceed. The findings indicate that through addressing the systemic work placed on carers, the burden placed on them can be alleviated. From a system perspective, streamlining and reducing duplication of assessments, improving information access, improving communication and targeting partnerships between differing organisations can reduce system complexity which in turn will reduce the demands made on carers. Consideration of models of system navigation, care co-ordination, and case management would support those who struggle to independently master the system. The findings also suggest that there is scope for health care professionals and service providers to better identify carer requirements and assess carer capacity to manage the work. Without investment to assist carers to do the increasingly complex work, there is a risk of disparity between those that are equipped to access services and supports and those that will that continue to flounder and forego appropriate care for the older person and support for themselves.

The goal of this thesis was to investigate the usage of mobile devices with multitouch capabilities in the learning of procedural knowledge. A system, consisting of three prototypes, was to be implemented as a way of examining our two hypotheses:H1: Through using a conceptual model close to how the human mind perceive objects, we can increase consistency both in the creation of new user manuals and in the learning process.H2: By taking advantage of multitouch technologies we can introduce a more natural way of interacting on virtual representations of real-life objects.A lot of research was conducted on the usage of a conceptual model containing information on the physical attributes and the procedural knowledge to back our applications, and how this best could be realized. Existing technologies for creating 3D models was investigated, but was quickly discarded due to the unique representation that was needed to successfully integrate the model with GOMS. The research process concluded that an application for describing new devices would have to be developed as well.Three applications was developed to investigate our hypotheses: an application for describing the aspects of a device, written for Mac OS, a server for communicating with prolog over TCP, written in Java, and an application for displaying the device and allowing for interaction, written for the iOS platform. The final versions of these three prototypes made it possible to create objects consisting of cubes, storing them on the server, and rendering them on the mobile application. The report concludes by discussing the utility of our prototype in regards to the hypotheses. Although not in its optimal state, the prototype demonstrates the utility of pure gestural interfaces, and how well established technologies such as prolog and GOMS can be used to empower them. Finally, interesting extensions and further work based on this thesis is proposed, demonstrating its versatility.

A Systemic Family Constellation is a phenomenological systemic group process that promotes healing and transformation in individuals through the use of representatives who stand in for family members, so that entanglements with the ancestors can be revealed and brought to reconciliation. Family Constellations were created by German psychotherapist and former priest, Bert Hellinger, who spent 16 years as a missionary and educator with the Zulu peoples of South Africa. Hellinger suggests that individuals become entangled with the fate of the ancestors. This study proposes that epigenetics can explain the heritability of ancestral experiences.

This study explores the role of epigenetics in the transgenerational transmission of the effects of trauma, experiences, and behaviors of the ancestors as observed in Systemic Family Constellations. It employs a multiparadigmatic model of research and performs a systematic review of existing literature on epigenetics from the fields of biology, genetics, medicine and psychology, and demonstrates that some epigenetic changes can be inherited for as many as four generations—and possibly iv more, without any changes in the underlying DNA. A systematic review of existing literature has become a viable research method in the fields of medicine and the social sciences in recent years, and is used here to explore epigenetic changes in genomic expression that are transmitted transgenerationally. This study recommends that epigenetics be added as a scientific explanation to the existing metaphysical theories of how constellations work, that include: (a) the knowing field, (b) morphic fields and morphic resonance, and (c) indigenous ways of knowing.

Some of the examples of epigenetic inheritance presented in this study, include the epigenetic effects of major traumas, such as the bombing of the World Trade Center, the Holocaust, and the Dutch Hunger Winter, as well as the effects of mothering on the stress responses of their offspring, the effects of feast or famine in utero that can potentially result in schizophrenia, and the effects of child sex abuse on mental health in adulthood and on same sex orientation—as well as potential evolutionary changes.

Background: The incidence of cancer is increasing alongside a fall in mortality rates. This has resulted in a growing number of cancer survivors overall, including for colorectal (bowel) cancer. For healthcare services to effectively support recovery and adjustment for survivors and their caregivers, there is a need to develop an understanding of couples’ experiences after treatment. Objectives: The systematic review aimed to identify qualitative research on partners' experiences of cancer care-giving after treatment, and to synthesise findings on partners’ psychological adjustment. The primary qualitative study aimed to explore couples' experiences of colorectal cancer services from the perspectives of patients and their partners, focusing on the transition period after treatment. Methods: For the systematic review, 10 qualitative studies were purposefully sampled to focus on partners’ psychological adjustment post-treatment. Findings from these studies were analysed and synthesised using the Framework approach. For the empirical study, semi-structured interviews were conducted separately with a purposeful sample of 10 participants, comprising five patient-partner dyads. Data were analysed using the Framework approach, incorporating dyadic analysis to compare narratives within and between couples. Results: The synthesis highlighted the importance of considering the patient-caregiver relationship across the cancer trajectory and within the wider context. Specific barriers and facilitators of partners’ adjustment related to communication and cohesion, transitions and gradual changes, as well as healthcare and cultural belief systems. The empirical study identified three overarching themes: the process of recovery, the impact of relationship dynamics, and mixed experiences of healthcare services. An additional discussion chapter provided further comparison of the primary research study with the extant literature. Conclusions: Recovery and adjustment after cancer can be facilitated by a proactive and systemic approach to healthcare. The findings illustrate the significant impact that patients and partners can have on each other and underscore the need for consistency in good clinical practice throughout the recovery process.

Alleviating the global shortage of health workers, particularly nurses, is critical for health systems and health worker performance. Nurses are mostly women and make up the majority of the health workforce. Several factors have been identified as key players in the shortage crisis and migration is one of these factors. Nurses' migration from Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) increases the nurse shortage in the region and further constraints the already struggling health systems. Migration literature has dominantly focused on macro push-pull, brain drain and ethics theories of migration with limited exploration of relationships, interaction, norms, beliefs and values shaping migration trajectories and decisions. Despite the potential role of gender as an influential component of migration trajectories, there has been little research done to investigate gender in the context of migration of SSA nurses. This review aims to identify, describe, and summarize SSA nurses' migration experiences by assessing the influence of gender on these experiences. The dissertation is organized into 3 parts. Part A is a systematic review protocol that describes the background, justification and methodology of the review. A scoping exercise is conducted to to familiarize with the literature. This is followed by a qualitative systematic approach is utilised and the literature in eight databases is searched using key words and terms derived from an initial scoping exercise and the review questions. Suitable articles are defined and selected using a set inclusion and exclusion criteria. The suitable articles are then appraised and a thematic analysis using a gender focal lens is applied to them. Part B is a literature review of existing primary and theoretical research on health worker shortages; migration and gender analysis in health worker migration and shortages. It provides a background for the systematic review by defining migration, gender and gender analysis as well as presenting the scope on health worker and nurse shortages. The literature review encompasses the scoping exercise and concludes on the relevance of a gender-focused research on nurse migration. Part C. is the full systematic review presented as an article for Human Resources for Health Journal. Articles published on Sub-Saharan African (SSA) nurses' migration experiences between 2005 and 2016 are presented, subjected to a gender analysis to illuminate the results. The discussion and conclusion then follow. The results indicate that there is a paucity of empirical work on nurse migration experiences that is explicitly gender-focused. Gender analysis that is situated in social contexts and identifiers revealed that SSA nurses continuously renegotiate and reconfigure gender roles in child care as they move from one social context to another. Moreover migrating SSA nurse face challenges and limitations at macro, meso and micro levels of the system- that are linked to their identities as either professionals, African migrants and/or women. Therefore, the review underscores the importance of the relationships between gender and local/individual nuances and global/national determinants of migration. However, these studies are limited in their explicit gender and social focus and how it contextually affects health worker performance and quality care provision. More empirical studies are needed to investigate gender influences for migrating male nurses; nurses who remain; and by different geographical & cultural region – to allow comparison across different groups of nurses and determine conceptual generalizations for doing gender research. This dissertation will likely increase understanding of the role of gender in migration decision-making and experiences for SSA nurses across different professional, migrant and woman identities. This understanding has impacts on nurse motivation, capacity and capability as well quality care provision. Additionally, the dissertation provides a better understanding for incorporating gender analysis in health systems research, and also identifies avenues for future research.

South Africa’s poor performance in local, regional and international benchmark literacy assessments is well documented and has implications for teachers. Both the Progress in International Reading and Literacy Studies (PIRLS) and the National Education Evaluation and Development Unit (NEEDU) reports and research argue that South African teachers lack both the content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of their subjects. Although the studies refer to teachers, their voices are not heard in the studies and their opinions are not known. Investigation was required to examine teachers’ experiences of the literacy assessment and thus bring teachers’ voices into this hotly debated topic.

The purpose of the study was to explore teachers’ experiences of teaching learners diagnosed with autism. In particular, information was obtained regarding the assets that learners with ASD have and how these assets can be utilised within classrooms. Teachers also gave insight about the challenges that they encounter while teaching learners with ASD. Current classroom practices were investigated and information obtained about the type of support that teachers provide to learners with ASD. This was done in an attempt to provide guidelines on how to improve classroom practices within various educational settings to best support learners with ASD. Furthermore, I explored whether learners with ASD can be included within mainstream or remedial schools and what assistance they will need if they can be accommodated within these school environments. A case study design was utilized. A total of six participants participated in the study. Data was collected by means of a focus group interview as well as one-on-one interviews. Two research sites were used and the information obtained from these sites was used to establish similarities and differences between teachers’ experiences in the respective school environments. The findings of the studies indicate that teacher training programmes need to be revisited in order to achieve the ideal of authentic inclusive school environments.

Over time, the ‘normal’ experience of pregnancy transitioned to the hospital setting, leading to a discourse steeped in the notions of risks and complications. Risks and complications refer to health problems expectant women may experience, causing them to have a high-risk pregnancy. High-risk pregnancy refers to a pregnancy that negatively affects the health of the mother, the baby, or both, and evoking a range of emotional and psychological experiences. Research on high-risk pregnancy is predominantly found in the medical arena. Such research usually concerns the disease, while women’s emotional/psychological experiences are not sufficiently documented. For this reason, the objectives of this study was to explore the emotional and psychological experiences of women in the reviewed articles throughout their high-risk pregnancies, and identify the medical conditions and complications in the same reviewed articles. Ethics clearance was obtained from the senate research committee at UWC. The systematic review examined qualitative studies, including the qualitative components of mixed method studies published between January 2006 and June 2017. The databases that were searched are EbscoHost, JSTOR, Sage Journals Online, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Sabinet, Scopus, Emerald eJournals Premier, Pubmed, as well as Taylor and Francis Open Access eJournals. The study evaluated the literature found on these databases for methodological quality by using three stages of review (i.e. abstract reading, title reading, and full-text reading) and applying a meta-synthesis to the current evidence on the research topic. The findings provide empirical evidence based on sound research that medical conditions and complications (i.e. HELLP syndrome, thrombophilia, gestational diabetes, maternal near-miss syndrome, foetal abnormality, preterm birth, hypertension, and uterine rupture) are associated with women’s emotional and psychological experiences (i.e. fear, shock, feeling frightened, sadness, worry, alienation, frustration, grief, guilt, anger, ambivalence, despair, upset, loneliness and isolation, anxiety, depression, and PTSD) throughout their high-risk pregnancies. As a result of this, survivors of severe pregnancy complications have subsequent psychological and emotional challenges. It is therefore recommended that future researchers consider including quantitative studies in a systematic review on the same topic.

This study is a qualitative enquiry into family therapists’ experiences of working with young people who self-harm and their families. To date, in spite of self-harm being a serious public health concern, there is relatively little exploration of the subject in family therapy literature. The study attempts to describe, understand and illuminate family therapists’ experiences: the therapeutic issues encountered, the stances adopted in response to the issues encountered, and the emotional impact on the therapist of working with this client group. A total of nine experienced family therapists participated in semi-structured interviews. The study employed a grounded theory method for data analysis. The analysis yielded a theory of therapists’ experiences that included a Core Category and three Main Categories. The Core Category that emerged was: •Cultivating the Practice of Hope – Withstanding the Pull to Hopelessness. The three Main Categories were: •Making the Situation Safe •Conversing Therapeutically – The Practice of Hope •Team and Organisational Processes: Supporting Therapists. The Core Category is the central feature of this theory. It proposes that the central concern for the therapist is how to stay engaged with the family and the young person in the context of serious risk of self-harm and in situations where change is difficult to achieve and hopelessness can pervade. The therapist has to try to understand and make sense of family members’ distress, and be touched by and open to their feelings of despair and hopelessness without becoming overwhelmed and despairing themselves. The therapist response to this dilemma is the stance of hopefulness. It is both a therapeutic stance and orientation, and is enacted in practice through finding ways to cultivate hope in the therapeutic encounter. While the Core Category is the central ‘story’ the three Main Categories are linked to the Core Category. The Main Category, Making the Situation Safe describes the initial stage of the work, with its focus on ensuring the safety of the young person. The Main Category, Conversing Therapeutically – the Practice of Hope describes how the therapists enacted the ‘practice of hope’. The Main Category, Team and Organisational Processes: Supporting Therapists describes how the context in which the therapists work, the nature of relationships, the team and organisational structures, play a critical role in supporting therapist hope, so that they can withstand the pull to hopelessness. This study aims to make a contribution towards articulating a framework for family therapy with adolescents who self-harm and introduces a new vocabulary – the language of hope and hopelessness.

Background: Patients’ recovery from surgery differs when they are in a hospital setting or at home. However, an often forgotten aspect of post-operative ambulatory care is the patients' recovery at home following ambulatory surgery.Aim: To explore and describe the patients’ experiences of recovery at home following the ambulatory surgery procedure.Method: A systematic review of 7 qualitative studies in English with pre-specified criteria was conducted. An overview of qualitative evidence derived from the 17 identified main themes across the 7 primary studies was analyzed.Result: Seven thematic analysis themes were identified as being core to the patients’ experience during recovery process at home: physical symptoms, a period of regaining pre-operative functions, psychological effects, the surgical wound, delayed recovery process, social support, and the sick-role condition.. These seven themes were described patient's experiences at home following ambulatory surgery from early stage of recovery to the time of getting back to normal life. Conclusion: Recovery at home following ambulatory surgery seemed to be challenging, a quality self-care at home was lacking in the form having full control and knowledge about symptoms; adequate information, education and medication during self-care management; sufficient support by carer and nurses; and enough time-off for recovery.

The current prevailing notion is that the limbic system is inextricably linked to emotion, and indeed, most textbooks, research articles, and scientific lectures tout the limbic system as being the predominant purveyor of emotional processing in the brain. Yet, more than a half-century of research has produced surprisingly little evidence in support of such a notion, suggesting that the concept of an emotional limbic system is overly simplistic. The primary objective of this thesis is to determine whether the limbic system is necessary for one aspect of emotion, namely, its conscious experience. Neurological patients with focal damage to different regions of the limbic system - including the hippocampus, amygdala, insular cortex, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) - underwent multiple emotion induction procedures using affectively-laden film clips. For comparison, two other groups of participants were tested: patients with brain damage outside of the limbic system and healthy participants without brain damage. Two emotion inductions aimed at eliciting diffuse emotional states of positive or negative affect, and five emotion inductions aimed at eliciting specific emotional states of happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, or fear. Immediately following the end of each film clip, the return of emotion back to its baseline state was tracked over a three minute "emotion recovery" time period. The results of the experiment revealed three main findings. First, limbic system damage did not disrupt the experience of emotion during the film clips, with patients reporting high levels of the induced target emotion at a magnitude comparable to both comparison groups. Second, patients with bilateral damage circumscribed to either the hippocampus or the vmPFC demonstrated an abnormally slow rate of emotion recovery, indicating that these limbic regions are important for the successful downregulation of emotion. Third, patients with large bilateral lesions affecting multiple limbic structures (including the medial temporal lobes and insular cortices) showed an abnormally rapid rate of emotion recovery, with the induced emotion returning to baseline levels within 60 seconds following the end of each film. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the limbic system is not necessary for the experience of emotion, but is necessary for sustaining and regulating that experience after the emotion-inducing stimulus is no longer directly accessible to consciousness.

Although I was trained as a nurse, I became curious about the views of psychiatric nursing staff as to what they feel would create a clinical learning environment for them. This was as a result of having my dearly beloved father admitted to a medical ward, and being on the receiving side of care. This created a fear in me that surprised me. I was scared at how my father would be treated if I was not present to witness his care. As a nurse, strangely, I felt that I could not trust the nurses to provide safe clinical care for/with my father. I began to feel concerned about the competencies of nurses as I observed the care that was being offered to him. My observation and experience was that the ward environment generated an atmosphere that needed a form of nursing care that was collaborative and transparent where the hand-over between professionals communicated the needs of the patients in their care – from making sure that patients’ bedding is comfortable, to checking whether they are trying to communicate something, to being sure that their medication has been properly given. This aroused my curiosity as to whether nursing staff themselves had views as to what is needed to have, or to create, an environment that sustained their original urge to take up nursing in the first place. I thus became curious to investigate the views and experiences of both qualified and non-qualified psychiatric nurses with the aim of improving the clinical learning environment within acute adult inpatient wards, as well as secure adult and male adolescent mental health inpatient wards, as these wards raise crucial issues to do with control, power, seclusion, rights and responsibilities, issues that are not easy for nurses to learn to deal with in their classroom training. For this study I interviewed sixteen staff members of wards within the National Health Service and the private sector. The staff varied in their experiences and qualification, from qualified mental health nurses to non-qualified nurses. My findings show that: (1) Nurses often felt the ward organisation had hindered their learning through the way in which it worked to organise them. (2) Nurses would have liked to experience a different kind of learning. However they were not sure in what way or how they would like the learning experience to be. (3) The expert nurses were able to work in a competent manner despite the sense of the organisation organising their practices, as they were able to sense which of the limited number of organisational possibilities were open to them so that their choices allowed for their practices to be learning experiences as well as providing sound clinical care. (4) Learning dialogues happen in contexts where nurses feel supported and where the episode of care in which they are engaged is also supported by a team approach and resourceful pulling together of skills and abilities. (5) There was a lack of space(s) for the nurses to use for reflection. (6) Nurses also expressed the need for supervision after an episode or critical event had taken place. (7) Throughout all the areas I inquired into, what was strongly echoed was that the psychiatric nurses all felt that they needed a voice within the organisation and its hierarchy of team structures within these wards. There was a felt sense that the nurses wanted and at times needed more expert nurses working in the teams. Overall, I was struck by the abilities which were brought to the forefront as the nurses shared their views and experiences of how they felt organised by the organisation. They were able to explore the factors that they felt would improve the quality of care that nurses provide and were able to share what they believe will help them in co-creating standards for how the clinical environment could become a learning environment for the nurses.

Background An increasing body of research is suggesting that childhood trauma and adversity may be associated with various adverse mental health outcomes, including psychosis. Cognitive functioning is often compromised in psychosis, and research has shown that there may be a link between early trauma and cognitive impairment in people with psychosis. No systematic review of the literature of this link has been undertaken, and very few studies have examined samples of individuals at high clinical risk for psychosis, to assess whether the potential link between adversity and cognitive functioning exists, without the confounding factors of length of illness, antipsychotic medication and chronicity of symptoms. Method The systematic review of all relevant electronic databases investigates the research to date on the association between childhood adverse experiences and cognitive ability in psychosis, and the conclusions that can be drawn from the existing literature, taking into account relevant considerations regarding sample, methodology and statistical analysis. The subsequent empirical study utilizes a sample at clinical high risk of developing psychosis, and a healthy control group to investigate whether any putative association in specific domains of cognitive functioning, or global cognitive ability and childhood adversity exist in those at clinical high risk, compared to controls. Results The systematic review indicated that at present, the literature looking into childhood adversity and cognitive ability in relation to psychosis is heterogeneous, with some studies finding that this association only occurs in patients, whilst others suggest it only occurs in the control groups. Some studies found it to be specific to certain cognitive domains, whilst others suggest it was a more global impairment. Methodology, samples and analysis differed considerably across studies, and likely contribute to the heterogeneity of the literature. The empirical paper showed a significant interaction effect between group (high risk versus controls) in the high childhood adversity group, in relation to global cognitive ability. Interestingly, this was not related to psychotic symptom severity or distress. Conclusion Several limitations of the existing studies limit the conclusions that can be drawn from the existing evidence regarding the link between childhood adversity and cognitive ability, and future research in prodromal samples is essential. The empirical study showed that there is a link between childhood adversity and cognitive ability in those at clinical high risk of developing psychosis, before disorder onset, that is not present in controls. This suggests that this may form a vulnerability in those at high risk for psychosis, rather than a more general mechanism present in the typical population.

In any computer system a critical part is storage and today´s increasing demand for storage space require a flexible filesystem that offers the required scalability and supply the features that system administrators require to maintain data in safe and error-free way e.g., that data is correct and free from bit rot. Another consideration is that performance is important for the overall experience. Two file systems that are good candidates are Btrfs and ZFS. This work examines articles from 3 databases through a literature review, extract experiences and lessons learned from implementation and use of the two file systems. The literature study indicates an overall positive experience with several benefits. However, most of the articles contained experiences from the implementation and use of ZFS and BtrFS fall into its shadow. The study also tells the importance of thorough research before implementation to weigh the pros and cons.

Context and Motivation: Technology play a vital role in the people’s present life. These technology has different types of softwares and devices. Now a days people mostly live around the digital devices and involve with them. These softwares when using causes digital distraction. Mostly digital distraction occurs only when using digital devices. For the development of software and devices requirements play a major role in the development in an organization. Question/Problem: The requirements are developed into the features of software. These features when using can cause distraction. So to manage these digital distraction causing by the software, we considered requirements engineering, by introducing the requirements engineering process at the beginning of the development of software, so to develop a distraction-free software. This can be helpful for the developers to develop the distraction-free software from early stages for the user. Principal Ideas/Objectives: Our thesis mainly focus on the identification of quality factors requirements contributing to the digital distraction and analyse them and we also tried to identify feature usage and user experience of software to identify distraction of software and a mind-map is designed for the study of digital distraction. So that these can provide useful information for future studies. Methods/Contributions: In our thesis study, we conducted Systematic Literature Review using snowballing process for the identification of the literature about the digital distraction and analysed the SLR. Further an online survey is conducted on Instagram users to extract distraction features and reasons for distraction and then we used this data to plan a mind-map of different categories contributing to digital distraction. Results: The main findings and observations in our research are observed through SLR and survey results. For research question 1, the data that is extracted through SLR gives quality factor requirements that contribute to the digital distraction. An understanding of digital distraction among software and feature and also the causes are observed. For the research question 2, the data from the survey is collected from the users of Instagram are observed. The results from the survey are extracted to know about the distraction of software using the feature usage which is extracted from the survey and also the user experience. From these results of SLR and survey data, a mind map is designed to know about the study of the digital distraction. Conclusions: Finally, we come up with a idea by planning mind-map that helps the software developers and requirement engineers to build a distraction-free software. The results of this study can be helpful to all the software developers and also to the ones who want to carry our the research on requirements connection with digital distraction, this can be a start point for them.

Though writing is an essential life skill (National Commission on Writing, 2003, 2004, 2005), time spent writing in classrooms across the US is brief (Applebee and Langer, 2006; Applebee and Langer, 2011; Graham and Perin, 2007; National Commission on Writing, 2003). Furthermore, writing achievement of English learners (ELs) who represent nearly five million US students (Mather and Foxen, 2010) is often lower than other sub-groups (Fry, 2007, 2008). As such, using case study research (Stake, 2000, 2003) this study explored three sixth-eighth-grade teachers' experiences with an initiative to enhance writing instruction through the use of systemic functional linguistics (SFL), an approach that emphasizes writing for multiple purposes and the explicit teaching of language (Christie and Derewianka, 2008; Derewianka, 1990, 1999). SFL-informed instruction is an emerging strategy used to enhance the writing of ELs in US schools (see Brisk, Hodgson-Drysdale, and O'Connor, 2011; Brisk and Zisselsberger, 2010; Gebhard, et al., 2007; Schleppegrell and Go, 2007). A key argument of this ethnographic study is that the shape of the degree to which these three teachers took up a new way of teaching writing can be explained along a series of continua, consisting of the following five dimensions: cultivation of caring relationships with students, recognition of the needs of ELs, view of writing, commitment to professional growth, and commitment to collaboration and a number of related sub-dimensions. Another finding relates to the affective dimensions of teaching and learning, attention to which appeared to enhance teachers' enactment of SFL. Implications of these findings benefit teacher educators and professional development providers committed to enhancing writing instruction in US schools and speak to the field of educational reform more broadly by offering insight into multiple dimensions that influence teachers' uptake of a change endeavor

Drug use is a cause of health and social problems in the UK. Despite widespread interest in whole-school interventions, which make changes to school socio-environmental factors in order to reduce young people's drug use, the evidence-base regarding 'school effects' on drug use had not previously been synthesised, and the basis for these potential effects only partly theorised. This thesis examines whether and how schools as institutions can influence young people's attitudes and actions relating to drug use and generate new theoretical insights regarding the processes through which any school effects on students' drug use may occur.

In this inquiry I used Black Feminist Thought as the interpretive lens to investigate the characterizations and experiences of high achieving Black women undergraduate engineering and mathematics majors at a predominantly white institution. The qualitative inquiry considered intersecting oppressions to evaluate the experiences of this population. In particular, Black women operate in the intersection of race and gender, thus for a thorough analysis of their engineering and mathematics experiences to occur, the historical context of the United States and its oppressive structures must be considered. Stereotypes and systemic oppression follow this socially constructed identity as the participants enter the fields of engineering and mathematics as Black women. In order to develop relevant suggestions to increase the participation of this population in the field, I assert that the social construction of this intersectional identity must be considered. I evaluated the participants' experiences to determine its influence on their academic persistence and overall well-being. I implemented sista circle methodology, an ethnographic method that embodies a gender specific research methodology. Sista circle methodology expands beyond traditional methodology to draw on social relations, the wisdom of Black women in U.S. context, and functions as a medium for mentorship as a Black feminist practice. The data I collected as part of this study included a demographic survey, pre-interview, two sista circles, vision board collage, post-sista circle electronic reflection, "sista circle" alternative interview, and member checking. There were five participants in this study, and three of these participants engaged in the sista circle unity getaway and the remaining two participants completed the sista circle alternative interview. I analyzed the responses of all five participants in the interviews and sista circles to identify themes that emerged in this study. Eight themes emerged from the data: The first finding presented normalized policies and practices that reproduced an unwelcoming academic climate and specifically, 1) access to caring professors and the 2) competitive isolating environment. The academic climate forced the participants to negotiate self-doubt as they question if their program is the appropriate means to pursue their future career endeavors, in the second finding the participants experienced 3) variations in program expectations and reality, 4) a shift in academic self-concept, and 5) negotiated alternatives to persistence. In the third finding the participants responded to the conditions in the academic climate through forms of resistance, which include the construction of a 6) professional persona, 7) sense of community and peer bonds, and identifying 8) academic opportunities as motivational tools.

The balance between family support and child protection services is continuously challenged by high-profile cases. These highlight shortcomings both of the UK system and of research on the effectiveness of child maltreatment interventions (Munro, 2011). One such intervention is the Resolutions Approach to ‘denied’ child abuse (Turnell and Essex, 2006) – a systemic approach which creates a support network including extended family, friends, community members and professionals. There is, however, only limited research analysing the supporters’ experience of this intervention. In the present study five semi-structured group interviews were conducted in order to investigate how the family support network members made sense of their participation in Resolutions. Through a thematic analysis three related themes: returning hope; building safety and trusting a professional were identified. Additionally, special attention was paid to processes linked to the creation of family resilience (Walsh, 2003). Based on two contrasting case studies the potential creation of family resilience through Resolutions was discussed and clinical recommendations for creating family resilience within support networks were outlined.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is characterised by severely underdeveloped or absent attachment between a child and a caregiver. Adopted children who have experienced adverse early experiences prior to adoption may have lacked opportunities to form selective attachment relationships and, in rare cases, may have a diagnosis of reactive attachment disorder. The needs of adoptive families rearing children with special needs, such as children with a RAD diagnosis, are unique and it is crucial to understand the experiences of the families in order to increase the understanding of how to provide support and adequate services and interventions that respond to the needs of the families. Previous research focusing on adoptive parents’ experiences rearing children with a RAD diagnosis is scarce. Therefore, this systematic literature review aimed to explore their experiences. After a comprehensive literature search, seven articles that addressed the study aim and met the predefined inclusion criteria were included. A thematic synthesis was carried out to combine the results of the included articles. The findings suggest that adoptive families rearing children with a RAD diagnosis experience a wide range of challenges in their everyday lives, such as a lack of social network support and adequate support, services and interventions from professionals and service providers. Some facilitative factors, such as adoptive parents’ willingness to stay committed to their children, were found. Further research is needed to find out effective interventions to address the complex challenges adoptive families and their children with a RAD diagnosis experience. Study limitations and methodological considerations are discussed.

This thesis, rooted in urban anthropology and urban practices, focuses particularly on the process democratic participation in urban development projects. Indeed, urban development leads to significant consequences throughout the city's territory, causing tensions and repercussions both on the environment and on local social dynamics. The public school, as an architectural element and public facility dedicated to cultural education and the transmission of scientifically validated knowledge, is inevitably affected by these projects, themselves influenced by contemporary urban planning norms. My professional and personal experiences, rooted in the school context, enabled me to engage in urban renewal projects from 2010 to 2015. I conducted an ethnographic investigation into specific participation scenarios in the neighborhoods of Armação in Florianópolis, Brazil, and Carnot-Parmentier in Saint-Fons, in the metropolis of Lyon, and carried out an analysis of territorial development projects. In a reflexive approach and within a research-action perspective, I engaged in pedagogical initiatives that, through a multi-situated comparative study, enabled me to follow different actors in urban policy, residents, school professionals, and students. I analyzed institutional dynamics as well as the processes experienced by social actors involved in urban changes, while examining my own trajectory and commitment. Despite the emergence of democratic participation in our societies, I have observed that in the studied projects, this practice remains marginal. I have observed that this practice remains marginal in our societies, and that experiences lived, perceived, and conceived influenced by memory, by politico-administrative processes, as well as by sciences are scarcely considered in this participatory process. Participatory school experiences observed on the ground have been perceived as relational emancipatory practices, both individual and collective. Schools, influenced by epistemological and methodological elements, can become crucial local actors in the transgenerational construction of responses to challenges related to gentrification, the environment, development, as well as culture and urban social policies. However, educational and territorial public policies, influenced by political-administrative and scientific processes, appear to be very poorly connected. In this sense, considering the systemic aspect of participatory experience is of increasing importance for the sustainable development of cities and the promotion of the integral fulfillment of citizens

Oral traditions and oral literature have long contributed to human communication. The advent of arguably the most important technology, the written word, altered human ability to create and develop. However, this development for all its potential and scope created one of the most insidious dichotomies. As the written word developed so too the oral word became devalued and pushed to the fringes of societal development. One of the unfortunate outcomes has been a focus on the nomenclatures associated with orality and oral tradition, which although of importance, has skewed where the focus could and should have been located, namely, how to support and maintain the oral word and its innate value to human society in the face of what has become rampant technological developments. It is now ironic that technology is creating a fecund environment for a rebirth of orality. The study aims to mobilize technauriture as a paradigm in order to further embed orality and oral traditions to coherently embrace this changing technological environment. The central tenet of the study is that in order to enhance the status of orality the innate value embodied in indigenous knowledge systems must be recognized. Using the work of Bongani Sitole, an oral poet, as a backdrop the study will demonstrate a basic model that can act as a foundation for the effective integration of orality into contemporary structures. This is based on work that I published in the Journal of African Contemporary Studies (2009). Given the obvious multi-disciplinary nature of the material the work covers a wide cross section of the debate, from questions of epistemology and knowledge in general in terms of oral traditions, through the consciousness and technical landscapes, via the experience with Sitole’s material to issues of copyright and ownership. This work has also been submitted for publication together with my supervisor as a co-author. The study intends to consolidate the technauriture debate and lay a solid foundation to support further study.

Self-harm as an expression of emotional pain and hurt is starting to become the consensus view amongst professionals. This present study explored how young people who self-harm and their parents experience the young person’s self-harm and how it affects the relationships in the family. The research was a case study with three families, each consisting of an adolescent and of their parents. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore the lived experiences of each participant. In addition, relational scenarios and conjoint interviews were conducted with the parents. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. These sets of data were analysed in accordance with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) guidance. The meta themes were presented in detail in the Findings section. The key themes for the adolescents were: Feeling Responsible and Self-Harm Creates Closeness. The main themes for the parents were: Feeling Emotionally Overwhelmed and the Impact on Couple Relationship. The individual and couple analyses were linked together to provide a family-based analysis of the data. The meta themes were linked with one another to acknowledge the pre-existing connections between different participants and to add a richer, systemic perspective to the results. Mutual influences of the different family members on each other were identified. The findings indicated that a young person’s self-harm can be seen to be part of triadic interactional processes within the family. The various layers of analysis were integrated which enabled a systemic and attachment based theoretical model to be proposed in relation to self-harm in the context of the family. Wider cultural perspectives were also considered in the way that they shaped the understandings and relationship strategies in how to deal with the self-harm. The proposed theoretical model is used to offer implications for therapeutic practice and recommendations for future research are suggested.

Background: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can result in a number of consequences for those who has sustained the injuries, as well as having an impact on their wider system. Estimates of divorce and relationship dissolution among couples following TBI can be as high as 54% and partners are reported to experience high levels of stress. The majority of studies have explored couples' relationships following TBI from the perspective of either the person with TBI or the partner, as opposed to exploring this dyadically and, therefore, limiting the holistic understanding to this topic. Aim: The two aims of this thesis are as follows: firstly, the mixed-method synthesis review aimed to explore the current dyad evidence-base around couples' experiences and relationships following TBI; and secondly, the qualitative study aimed to explore the impact of TBI on couples' experiences and relationships. Method: The systematic review's search strategy consisted of a computerised search across five databases and manual searches for further references in other relevant literature reviews and reference lists. The quality of the qualitative and quantitative studies were analyses separately. Metaethnography was employed to synthesize the finding from the qualitative studies. In the qualitative empirical study, five dyad-couples participated in the semi-structured interviews. The individuals with TBI and their partners were interviewed independently. The data collected was analysed using a combined deductive-inductive framework analysis approach, which supported comparisons between and within couples. Results: The systematic review yielded eight eligible studies, three quantitative and five qualitative studies. Review of the quantitative studies suggested couples reported poor relationship quality and partners reported more dyadic dissatisfaction and overall poorer relationship adjustment than the people with TBI. Analysis of the qualitative studies suggested there were significant variations in the way couples' experience and respond to TBI. This included individual responses from the people with TBI, their partners or collectively as a couple, which influenced their relationship dynamics and also how they coped. The findings also drew attention to other contextual factors that influenced couples' attributions and perceptions toward the TBI-related changes. Deductive and inductive analysis of the interviews in the qualitative empirical study identified three overarching themes: 'You begin to realise that, actually, life may not be the same ever [again]...'; perceived influences on relationship endurance following TBI; and contextual and other factors. These explored the impact of TBI on couples' relationships and the processes that interacted with or influenced their perceived relationship endurance. Conclusion: Although limited by a small number of eligible studies in the systematic review and small sample size in the qualitative empirical study, this thesis emphasized the importance of dyadic research for gaining a holistic understanding of couples' experiences and relationships following TBI. This allows the complex interplay between the TBI, the person who has suffered the TBI, their partner and their relationship to be better understood. The interconnectedness between the individuals and how the difficulties are experienced raises possible issues for healthcare services around their views and approaches to the individual with TBI, their partner and the couple's relationship during the recovery and rehabilitation journey.

Background: Hypochondriasis is associated with marked impairments in physical and psychological functioning, work performance and increased health care utilization. The prevalence among medical outpatients is estimated to be between 4,2 % and 6,3 %. Notwithstanding there is deficient research in this area. Until recently no specific treatment has been clearly demonstrated to be effective. Objective: The aim was to investigate experiences of what it is like to live with hypochondriasis, but also to examine different treatment options. Methods: In order to illustrate the experiences a latent content analyses was made on a documentary named “Hypokondrikerna” and to examine the treatment options a systematic review was made. Result: The content analysis revealed three categories and nine sub-categories concerning the experiences. The three categories were “health anxiety”, “individual coping strategies” and “emotional consequences”. The systematic review revealed medical treatment which consisted of three different antidepressants as well as seven different kinds of psychological treatments and other interventions, which all reduced hypocondriacal symptoms. Discussion: The findings show that hypochondriasis causes a chronic suffering and indicates that potential treatments are available. Hypochondriasis causes an unproductive health care utilization. A more effective management could reduce the costs and ease the suffering. Therefore we suggest that this disease should be observed and treated. The nurse has an important function to maintain a positive relationship with the patient and create a therapeutic dialogue.

This thesis focuses on associations between child, parent and family emotional and behavioural adjustment and a variety of challenging experiences. The parenting role has a critical influence on child development and parenting outcomes and its importance is reflected in the content of many parenting interventions. Paper 1 provides a comprehensive literature review of the available measures of parenting self-efficacy. The measures were quality rated for their psychometric and administrative properties. The findings indicated that large numbers of available measures were developed for specific research questions and may often be used in inappropriate circumstances. The measures were clarified so that the details of the sample, content and construct validity, responsiveness and interpretability, and administrative qualities were clear. The theoretical grounding of each of the measures was emphasized and, to overcome the inconsistent and confusing terminology within this paradigm, measures of parenting self-efficacy were distinguished from measures of parenting confidence, competence and self-esteem. The paper offers a timely and comprehensive summary for researchers, clinical psychologists and healthcare professionals. Paper 2 details an investigation into the first use of an international measure in the UK. The International Parenting Survey was used to identify associations between child, parent and family adjustment difficulties, and challenging circumstances, such as childhood illness or disability, parental psychological distress or family socio-economic deprivation. A total of 696 parents, each of at least one child aged between 2- and 12-years-old, completed a series of questionnaires at one time point. The results identified that children’s difficulties are associated with greater emotional and behavioural adjustment difficulties in children, and also implicated certain aspects of the parenting role, including parental psychological distress. The discussion reflects on the use of this measure within a UK sample of parents. Additionally, the clinical implications of the study, its pitfalls and areas of future research are discussed. Paper 3 provides a critical reflection of the research process as a whole and examines the strengths and limitations of Papers 1 and 2. Personal reflections are also provided.
