Using presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote to sup- port lectures and presentations has become ubiquitous in both academia and industry. However, designing the visuals of presentation slides is a time-consuming and laborious task; repetitive steps are required for selecting templates, organizing objects, and optimizing layouts. To al- leviate these laborious works and to allow users to focus on preparing the contents of presentations, we present SmartPPT, a framework that supports the automatic generation of presentation slides from textual outline. We built a Recommender System model inside the framework that could pick up slide templates for input textual outline. To test its functionality and efficiency, two sets of user study procedures were conducted and shown that SmartPPT is time efficient in generating slides and it outperforms in user satisfaction when compared to user- handcrafted slides and the baseline condition, which was PowerPoint suggested templates.

Chapter one discusses the rationale for, and the aims of, this study. The design of interactive computer systems is an enterprise quite distinct from the design of other artefacts: design, or inventing a pattern, for interactive computer systems is a matter of design for use.HCI research has recognised the need for a user-centred approach to design, and has correspondingly drawn upon a variety of disciplines. However, the dominance of psychological theory and method has led to the exclusion of a body of applicable findings and methods from disciplines which deal with human interaction, and to a failure to systematically investigate the the links between human interaction and human-computer interaction. Prospectively, conversation analysis provides the resources for design of more natural interactive systems,and represents the possibility of design guidance which avoids the problems inherent in current design guidelines. The methods and findings of conversation analysis, this chapter has proposed, will provide a principled approach both to the investigation of human-computer interaction, and to the design of interactive systems. Within the general aim of investigating the applicability of conversation analysis to HCI, the remainder of this study addresses both the theoretical issues, and illustrates the practical outcomes, in relation to an empirical study of user-system interaction. Chapter two examines in greater detail the perspective of ethnomethodology and the findings of conversation analysis. The expository materials, such as exist in these fields, are recognised as being difficult, especially so for those who may be approaching these topics for the first time, and from other than sociological backgrounds. Accordingly the discussion concentrates upon only their more central assumptions and findings. Chapter one observes that conversation analysis and ethnomethodology have not yet found expression in HCI research largely because of the divergence between their methods and those of psychology. The exact nature of those methods, and their advantages for HCI research, are explored in chapter three. This discussion concerns both the practical methodology adopted in this study, the relationship between experimental and non-experimental investigative methods, and the practical applicability of the methods of conversation analysis in the investigation of human-computer interaction.An empirical study of human-computer interaction is undertaken in chapter four. The examination of videotaped sequences of humancomputer interaction through conversation analytic methods is combined with the findings of conversation analysis, to formulate design guidelines and recommendations. Finally, chapter five attempts to assess the significance of this approach to HCI research and design. The promising route which conversation analysis provides for investigation of user-system interaction, and the possibility that it can inform the design of future interactive systems, is explored.

This thesis dwells on the issue of using personal computers in real-time control and data acquisition applications. A data acquisition and control system is designed to acquire temperature, humidity, air volume and solar radiation data and control the inside temperature, air volume and maximizes solar radiation inside an ecologically closed test structure. The focus is on an Intel 8088 or 80286 based personal computer. A personal computer is used for development of the software and the final real-time system runs on a PC as well. This eliminates the need of expensive cross compilers and in-circuit emulators. A control and data acquisition task is selected and a solution using an IBM compatible personal computer is demonstrated. Various advantages and disadvantages for selecting the personal computer and development software and environment are discussed. Solutions to various problems encountered are discussed.

As a CAD tool, the Computer Aided Model Structuring System (call MOSTS in the following text) for model structuring in system design and system simulation has been designed and implemented. First, this MOSTS allows system design experts to create and save System Data Bases (SDBs) for model structuring in system design and simulation. Then, these SDBs can be retrieved, modified, and finally used to structure system models by design engineers. The MOSTS pursues the model structuring process in such a way that the model structure having the best performance (according to the expert's knowledge and the design engineer's design criteria) will be generated first, and then the second best model, the third best model, and so on.

Burstiness in workloads is often found in multi-tier architectures, storage systems, and communication networks. This feature is extremely important in system design because it can significantly degrade system performance and availability. This dissertation focuses on how to use knowledge of burstiness to develop new techniques and tools for performance prediction, scheduling, and resource allocation under bursty workload conditions.;For multi-tier enterprise systems, burstiness in the service times is catastrophic for performance. Via detailed experimentation, we identify the cause of performance degradation on the persistent bottleneck switch among various servers. This results in an unstable behavior that cannot be captured by existing capacity planning models. In this dissertation, beyond identifying the cause and effects of bottleneck switch in multi-tier systems, we also propose modifications to the classic TPC-W benchmark to emulate bursty arrivals in multi-tier systems.;This dissertation also demonstrates how burstiness can be used to improve system performance. Two dependence-driven scheduling policies, SWAP and ALoC, are developed. These general scheduling policies counteract burstiness in workloads and maintain high availability by delaying selected requests that contribute to burstiness. Extensive experiments show that both SWAP and ALoC achieve good estimates of service times based on the knowledge of burstiness in the service process. as a result, SWAP successfully approximates the shortest job first (SJF) scheduling without requiring a priori information of job service times. ALoC adaptively controls system load by infinitely delaying only a small fraction of the incoming requests.;The knowledge of burstiness can also be used to forecast the length of idle intervals in storage systems. In practice, background activities are scheduled during system idle times. The scheduling of background jobs is crucial in terms of the performance degradation of foreground jobs and the utilization of idle times. In this dissertation, new background scheduling schemes are designed to determine when and for how long idle times can be used for serving background jobs, without violating predefined performance targets of foreground jobs. Extensive trace-driven simulation results illustrate that the proposed schemes are effective and robust in a wide range of system conditions. Furthermore, if there is burstiness within idle times, then maintenance features like disk scrubbing and intra-disk data redundancy can be successfully scheduled as background activities during idle times.

The thesis undertakes an analysis of the modelling methods used in the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) developed by Peter Checkland and Brian Wilson. The analysis is undertaken using formal logic and work drawn from modern Anglo-American analytical philosophy especially work in the area of philosophical logic, the theory of meaning, epistemology and the philosophy of science. The ability of SSM models to represent causation is found to be deficient and improved modelling techniques suitable for cause and effect analysis are developed. The notional status of SSM models is explained in terms of Wittgenstein's language game theory. Modal predicate logic is used to solve the problem of mapping notional models on to the real world. The thesis presents a method for extending SSM modelling in to a system for the design of a knowledge based system. This six stage method comprises: systems analysis, using SSM models; language creation, using logico-linguistic models; knowledge elicitation, using empirical models; knowledge representation, using modal predicate logic; codification, using Prolog; and verification using a type of non-monotonic logic. The resulting system is constructed in such a way that built in inductive hypotheses can be falsified, as in Karl Popper's philosophy of science, by particular facts. As the system can learn what is false it has some artificial intelligence capability. A variant of the method can be used for the design of other types of information system such as a relational database.

The primary objective of this work is to design a parking guidance system to reliably detect entering/exiting vehicles to a parking garage in a cost-efficient manner. Existing solutions (inductive loops, RFID based systems, and video image processors) at shopping malls, universities, airports etc., are expensive due to high installation and maintenance costs. There is a need for a parking guidance system that is reliable, accurate, and cost-effective. The proposed parking guidance system is designed to optimize the use of parking spaces and to reduce wait times. Based on a literature review we identify that the ultrasonic sensor is suitable to detect an entering/exiting vehicle. Initial experiments were performed to test the sensor using an Arduino based embedded system. Detection logic was then developed to identify a car after analyzing the initial test results. This logic was extended to trigger a camera to take an image of the vehicle for validation purposes. This system consists of Arduino, ultrasonic sensor, and a temperature sensor. It was installed and tested in Richard Beard Garage at the University of South Florida for five days. The test results of each trial are provided and average error for all the trials is calculated. The error cases occur due to golf carts, straddling cars on both entry/exit lanes, and people walking under the sensor. The average error of the system is 5.36% over five days (120 hrs). The estimated cost for one detector per lane is approximately $30.

Inom styr- och reglerteknik är hantering av larm en viktig fråga, speciellt då fastighetsbranschen mer och mer börjat automatisera driften av fastigheterna. Det finns ett antal system på marknaden som erbjuder larmdistribution via en mängd olika transportsystem. Syftet med projektet är att undersöka om det finns alternativ till dessa som erbjuder mer flexibilitet, samt att designa en prototyp till ett system som använder denna alternativa metod. Två befintliga system analyserades och en kravspecifikation baserad på analysen upprättades. Utifrån denna designades en prototyp som sköter distributionen över Internet och en enkel implementation av en del av designen har gjorts. Några tester har utförts med denna och de visar att denna lösning har goda prestanda. Slutligen gjordes en diskuterande jämförelse mellan detta system och de befintliga.

Our methodology is geared towards the concurrent design of hardware components and software agents. Our choice of tool/language pair is CoWare N2C design tool and SystemC specification language. Our design flow is completed with a high performance hardware synthesis methodology relying behavioral synthesis. A case study, the design of an ATM switch, is carried out to illustrate the proposed ideas.

The technical breakthrough of Turbo Codes (TCs) initiated two decades of exciting developments leading to a suite of near-capacity techniques. It has been widely recognized that exchanging extrinsic information between the channel decoders and the modulated signal detectors assists communications systems in approaching their best possible performance potential that is predicted by the channel capacity. Nonetheless, in line with Moor’s Law, as researchers inch closer and closer to the channel capacity, the complexity of the resultant communications systems is also significantly increased. In fact, soft-decision-aided signal detection conceived for Single-Input Single-Output (SISO), Single-Input Multiple-Output (SIMO) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) schemes typically contribute a substantial fraction of the total complexity, especially when multiple received samples have to be jointly detected in order to combat the deleterious effect of channel fading. Against this background, in this treatise, we firstly propose a reduced-complexity design for the classic soft-decision-aided PSK/QAM detectors, and then these reduced-complexity design guidelines are applied to a variety of communications systems spanning from coherent to non coherent, from uncoded to coded, and also from SISO to MIMO systems. Our aim is to reduce the computational complexity as much as possible, especially for complex near-capacity communications systems, while mitigating any performance loss imposed by our reduced-complexity design. First of all, we commence from the family of basic coherent SISO/SIMO systems, where both uncoded and coded PSK/QAM schemes are considered. The channel coding assisted near capacity systems design principles are introduced based on EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts. Furthermore, we observe that the Max-Log-MAP algorithm invoked for soft-decision-aided PSK/QAM detection aims for finding the maximum probabilities, which is similar to the action of hard-decision-aided detection of uncoded MPSK/QAM schemes. Therefore, we propose to link each a priori LLR to a reduced-size fraction of the channel’s output signal constellations, so that the Max-Log-MAP algorithm may be operated at a reduced complexity. Moreover, the corresponding reduced-complexity Approx-Log-MAP algorithm is also conceived by compensating for the Max-Log-MAP algorithm’s widely-used Jacobian approximation relying on a lookup table. Our performance results demonstrate that up to 41.6% and 72.6% complexity reductions are attained for soft-decision-aided Square 64QAM and Star 64QAM detectors, respectively, which is achieved without any performance loss. This complexity reduction is substantial, especially when the soft decision-aided signal detectors are invoked several times during turbo detection. Secondly, we proceed by conceiving reduced-complexity algorithms for the non coherently detected DPSK schemes in both uncoded and coded SISO/SIMO systems. More explicitly, the DPSK transmitter modulates the data-carrying symbols onto the phase changes between consecutive transmitted symbols, so that the Conventional Differential Detection (CDD) may recover the source information by observing the phase change between every pair of consecutive received samples. However, the CDD aided DPSK suffers from a 3 dB performance penalty compared to its coherent counterpart. Moreover, an irreducible error floor occurs, when the CDD is employed in rapidly fluctuating fading channels. In order to mitigate this problem, Multiple-Symbol Differential Detection (MSDD) may be invoked in order to improve the DPSK performance by extending the observation window length from the CDD’s Nw = 2 to Nw ≥ 2. The price paid is that the MSDD complexity grows exponentially with (Nw − 1) as a result of jointly detecting the (Nw − 1) data-carrying symbols. As a remedy, the Decision-Feedback Differential Detection (DFDD) concept may be introduced in order to detect a single symbol based on previous decisions concerning the (Nw − 2) data-carrying symbols in a MSDD window. However, the DFDD inevitably imposes a performance loss due to its inherent error propagation problem. In order to retain the optimal MSDD performance, the Multiple-Symbol Differential Sphere Detection (MSDSD) facilitates the MSDD by invoking a Sphere Decoder (SD). Against this background, we firstly propose to introduce a simple correlation operation into the hard-decision-aided MSDSD employing an arbitary number of Receive Antennas (RAs), so that the SD may visit the constellation points in a zigzag fashion for the case of uncoded DPSK SIMO systems. Furthermore, we propose a reduced-complexity Schnorr-Euchner search strategy for the soft-decision MSDSD employing an arbitrary number of RAs, so that the optimum candidate may be found by visiting a reduced-size subset of constellation points, and then the rest of the constellation points may be visited in a zig-zag fashion. Our simulation results demonstrate that up to 88.7% complexity reduction is attained for MSDSD (Nw = 4) aided D16PSK. We have also proposed the near-optimum Approx-Log-MAP algorithm conceived for soft-decision-aided SD, which has not been disseminated in the open literature at the time of writing. Furthermore, the important subject of coherent versus non coherent detection is discussed in the context of coded systems, which suggests that MSDSD aided DPSK is an eminently suitable candidate for turbo detection assisted coded systems operating at high Doppler frequencies. Following this, a range of non coherent detectors designed for non-constant modulus Differential QAM (DQAM) schemes are introduced for both uncoded and coded scenarios, where the open problem of MSDSD aided Differential QAM (DQAM) is solved. More explicitly, the MSDSD relies on the knowledge of channel correlation, which is determined both by the Doppler frequency and by the noise power. For DPSK, the transmitter’s phases may form a unitary matrix, which may be separated from the channel’s correlation matrix, so that a lower triangular matrix that is created by decomposion from the inverse of the channel’s correlation matrix may be utilized in the context of sphere decoding. However, for DQAM, the transmitted symbol-amplitudes cannot form a unitary matrix, which implies that they have to be taken into account by the channel’s correlation matrix. As a result, the symbol-amplitude-dependent channel correlation matrix only becomes known, when all the symbol-amplitudes are detected. Furthermore, the classic DFDD solutions conceived for DQAMrely on the assumption of the channel’s correlation matrix being independent of the symbol-amplitudes, which implies that these DFDD solutions are sub-optimal and they are not equivalent to the decision-feedback aided version of the optimum MSDD. To circumvent these problems, we prove that although the complete channel correlation matrix remains unknown, the associated partial channel correlation matrix may be evaluated with the aid of the SD’s previous decisions as well as by relying on a single information-dependent symbol amplitude that may be readily found by the SD. As a benefit, we are able to invoke sphere decoding for both amplitude detection and phase detection in the context of MSDD aided DQAM. Furthermore, we have also improved the classic DFDD solutions conceived for DQAMby directly deriving them from the optimum MSDD. Moreover, we offer a unified treatment of diverse non coherent detectors, including CDD,MSDD,MSDSD and DFDD for a variety of DQAM constellations that exist in the literature, including Differential Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (DAPSK), Absolute-Amplitude Differential Phase Shift Keying (ADPSK) and their twisted constellations. The reduced-complexity algorithms proposed for DPSK detection are also applied to DQAM detection in both uncoded and coded systems.

The available sources have, to some extent, determined the form of this thesis, which was undertaken in the hope that a more detailed study of the relations between London and the Crown during the years 1 1400_1 1150 would place in perspective the crises with which it begins and ends. The most important source of material for this study has been the Journals of the Court of Aldermen and Common Council which survive from 1416 (the years 1429- 1436 are missing). Historians with the help of a nineteenth century index have quarried in these Journals, but they have never been read through systematically. Journals nos. 3 and 6, having been wrongly bound up, could not be used until, their pages bad been sorted into the correct order from the internal evidence of their contents. The scribes who compiled the Journals were both careless and cautious which increases the difficulty in interpreting their crabbed notes. From studying the Journals dominant themes emerged which were then followed up at the Public Record Office and elsewhere. The conclusions from this study fall into three main categories. The Journals provided a great deal of material from which it was possible to draw a much more detailed picture of the machinery and business of the government of medieval London. Secondly it has been possible to tidy up the chronology of the crises themselves. At such times as Bolingbroke' s usurpation and Cade' a revolt the civic scribes were least active and most cautious. But it seems clear that the London support for both these men has been exaggerated and that the fundamental conservatism of the City governors was not easily rocked, whether by royal scions or Kentish peasants. But this study has proved most useful where the more mundane contact between the Crown and the citizens could be examined, In this way it has been possible to place the financial relations between the King and the City in perspective, and to realize that the King did not come as a beggar to the Londoners, since he had at his disposal all the chartered freedoms and privileges which were essential to the communal and economic life of the City. London, in spite of its great prestige and financial importance, still operated in the fifteenth century within a framework of royal privilege. While the memory of Richard II's action in 1392 was still green the Londoners were in no position to demand redress of grievances before supply. In understanding the delicate balance of the relationship between the Crown and the Londoners it is easier to understand the survival of the Lancastrian dynasty.

Control System Design methods are presented in terms of optimization techniques that incorporate Multi-Objective design criteria. Computer-Aided Control System Design (CACSD) environments make the approach easy-to-use and accessible to the practising control engineer. Two CACSD environments have been developed using different versions of the MATLAB package, one interfacing the ADS optimization package to an upgraded FORTRAN version of MATLAB, the other using Non-linear Programming algorithms coded in the PRO-MATLAB command language. In both environments, optimization problems are entered interactively and in a flexible manner using simple interpreted commands and programs. A Control System Design method has been implemented using optimal control theory and integral quadratic measures of control. The theory has been developed to incorporate a large number of design options, control structures and disturbance types. An evolutionary design process is used so that the control order and number of design criteria are systematically increased to incorporate more complex control structures and a wide set of performance objectives. In the later stages of this evolutionary design process, a Multi-Objective design strategy, known as the Goal Attainment method, is used to address multiple performance objectives.

Elaborating a correct design of a concurrent system is extremely difficult. In part this is due to the infinite number of possible system runtime behaviors that result from the concurrent (or pseudo-concurrent) execution of interacting processes or threads. Data consistency, deadlock, starvation and fairness issues are the most well-known problems encountered in concurrent systems. Accurate concurrent system design verification approaches require an expensive system runtime behavior analysis and consequently result in prohibitively high development costs (i.e. for testing). In this thesis we try to address this problem by presenting several static approaches that can help the developer of a concurrent system during the design phase. In the first part of the thesis we present an approach that can analyze an existing concurrent system design to detect potential deadlock situations. This is done by mapping object interaction diagrams such as sequence diagrams to System Synchronization Hasse diagrams, which are then analyzed to detect deadlock cycles. Since the approach is static, it is overly pessimistic, meaning that it is possible that the algorithm detects a deadlock that, in reality, cannot occur. On the other hand, if the algorithm cannot detect any deadlocks, the developer can be sure that the design is deadlock-free. In the second part of the thesis we show how a concurrency-enriched specification can be transformed into a system application-level consistent design. The approach starts with concurrency-aware OCL-based operation schemas that describe all system functionality using pre-, rely-, and post-conditions. These schemas are then mapped to Rely diagrams. Based on the rely diagrams, sequence diagrams describing the concurrent system design are elaborated. The approach uses locks to ensure consistency and deadlock freedom. We then further show how these locks can be used to enforce certain fairness policies. The usefulness of our approach is demonstrated

Ceci s'explique par un nombre infini de combinaison de comportement d'exécution possible causé par l'interaction des processus exécutant de fac¸on concurrente (ou pseudoconcurrente). La consistance de donnée, l'interblocage, l'insuffisance de ressources et le partage juste des ressources sont les problhmes les mieux connus dans les environnements concurrents. La vérification exacte d'une architecture de système concurrent est une solution très dispendieuse, nécessitant des analyses de comportement d'exécution qui s'avère beaucoup trop coûteux. Cette thèse adresse ce problème en proposant plusieurs techniques statiques qui peuvent aider un développeur d'un système concurrent pendant la phase d'analyse. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, nous présentons une technique qui permet d'analyser l'architecture d'un système concurrent existant pour y découvrir des situations potentielles d'interblockage. This thesis covers design, simulation and implementation of a solar energy control system for an on grid energy storage device. The design covers several control methods such as energy balance control, operating mode switching and data exchange. A genetic algorithm was designed to optimize the control system parameters design, and the algorithm's simulation and real time operating system implementation showed comparable results. The control system was implemented to connect a power supply to the grid. The power supply simulated a solar panel and connected to an electrical grid via Energy Hub equipment, and the energy transfer characteristics of designed control system were tested. The results showed that the selected algorithm matches the target performance criteria.

In the face of rapid development in information technology coupled with a growing dynamism in global markets, manufacturing systems have to be re-constructed for short term or long term goal. Such innovations promise to lead to a new competitive stage, which typically involve design of function, information and behaviour of systems. In order to design the system, simulation has often been chosen. However, simulation has proved limited and fails to aid design of such a complex systems because of consuming much computing time and cost, especially when modelling larger systems. Thus, there is a need to seek a new approach, in a way that results in simulating such a large manufacturing system with less demand on computing time and cost. This study researches into a hybrid modelling approach to minimise these limitations. It includes proposing a hybrid modelling methodology and developing a hybrid modelling tool. The methodology integrates simulation and metamodelling techniques. The metamodel employed in the study possesses, not only characteristics of conventional metamodels in terms of representing relationships in quantity, but also in time lapse. This is the originality of the study and the significant distinction between this research and application of metamodelling in conventional ways. The hybrid modelling tool is developed to support and demonstrate the identified hybrid methodology. LISP has been used as the software language for the hybrid modelling tool. The result of this work concludes that the hybrid modelling approach is capable of simulating a complex manufacturing system with less demands on the computer. The work reported in this thesis has been carried out in conjunction with the EPSRC research project, Hierarchical Manufacturing System Modelling (HMSM) (GR/F96549), to produce an Integrated Design and Modelling Methodology (IDEM). The project was initially a collaborative research program including Loughborough University of Technology (LUT), Morris Crane Ltd., of Loughborough and GEC Large Machine, of Rugby. The experience of these collaborators has proved most valuable in supporting the research, and have provided a cross section of views and comments. The research reported in this thesis is set in the context of the HMSM Research group at Loughborough.

Robots with vision capability have been taught to recognize unknown objects by comparing their shape features with those of known objects, which are stored in the vision system as a knowledge base. Traditionally, this knowledge base is created by showing the robot the set of objects that it is likely to come across. This is done with the vision system to be used and must be done in an online mode. An approach to teach the robot in an off-line mode by integrating the robot vision system and an off-line graphic system, has been developed in this research. Instead of showing the objects that the robot is likely to come across, graphic models of the objects were created in an off-line graphic system and a FORTRAN program that processes the models to extract their shape parameters was developed. These shape parameters were passed to the vision system. A program to process an unknown object placed in front of the vision system was developed to extract its shape parameters. A program that compares the parameters of the unknown object with those of the known models was also developed. The vision system was calibrated to measure the pixel dimensions in inches. In the vision system, shape parameters of the objects were found to vary with different orientations. The range of variation for each parameter was established and this was taken into consideration in the parameter comparison program.

One major problem for the designer of electronic systems is the presence of uncertainty, which is due to phenomena such as process and workload variation. Very often, uncertainty is inherent and inevitable. If ignored, it can lead to degradation of the quality of service in the best case and to severe faults or burnt silicon in the worst case. Thus, it is crucial to analyze uncertainty and to mitigate its damaging consequences by designing electronic systems in such a way that uncertainty is effectively and efficiently taken into account. We begin by considering techniques for deterministic system-level analysis and design of certain aspects of electronic systems. These techniques do not take uncertainty into account, but they serve as a solid foundation for those that do. Our attention revolves primarily around power and temperature, as they are of central importance for attaining robustness and energy efficiency. We develop a novel approach to dynamic steady-state temperature analysis of electronic systems and apply it in the context of reliability optimization. We then proceed to develop techniques that address uncertainty. The first technique is designed to quantify the variability in process parameters, which is induced by process variation, across silicon wafers based on indirect and potentially incomplete and noisy measurements. The second technique is designed to study diverse system-level characteristics with respect to the variability originating from process variation. In particular, it allows for analyzing transient temperature profiles as well as dynamic steady-state temperature profiles of electronic systems. This is illustrated by considering a problem of design-space exploration with probabilistic constraints related to reliability. The third technique that we develop is designed to efficiently tackle the case of sources of uncertainty that are less regular than process variation, such as workload variation. This technique is exemplified by analyzing the effect that workload units with uncertain processing times have on the timing-, power-, and temperature-related characteristics of the system under consideration. We also address the issue of runtime management of electronic systems that are subject to uncertainty. In this context, we perform an early investigation into the utility of advanced prediction techniques for the purpose of fine-grained long-range forecasting of resource usage in large computer systems. All the proposed techniques are assessed by extensive experimental evaluations, which demonstrate the superior performance of our approaches to analysis and design of electronic systems compared to existing techniques.

The explosive mobile data growth needs more spectrum to accommodate the traffic. Existing policy of exclusive spectrum access has made today's spectrum both over-controlled and underutilized. One possibility to improve spectrum efficiency is via dynamic spectrum sharing, which has the potential to release a large percentage of underutilized spectrum.

Cognitive radio is one of the most promising technologies to facilitate dynamic spectrum sharing. Yet, there exist many problems for cognitive radio to support multimedia communications. This dissertation advances the concept of “spectrum aware” for cognitive-radio based wireless multimedia communication system. We interpret spectrum awareness in a broad way which includes spectrum sensing, spectrum effectiveness and spectrum efficiency. In particular, we have made the following contributions in this dissertaion:

• We design and implement RECOG, a cognitive radio (CR) system that improves conventional CR with a smart sensing, fast backup channel searching and QoS managing. The proposed system is the first fully-fledge CR system that can supports real-time applications such as video chat.

• We design and implement PINOKIO, a system that monitors spectrum usage and improves spectrum efficiency in frequency-agile WiFi networks.

• We design and implement FAVICS, a frequency-aware video communication system that leverages the nature of unequal error protection (UEP) in frequency diversity for wireless streaming without modifying existing wireless PHY, and improve the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of video streaming by 5∼10 dB.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is increasingly used in higher education, but it is not without problems. The effectiveness of CMC depends on many factors, including the characteristics of CMC systems themselves. The research reported here therefore aimed to investigate how an educational CMC system might be improved, in order to support learning more effectively. The main context for the research was distance learning at the UK Open University (OU). A two-stage, mixed methods research approach was adopted. In the first stage, interviews and observations were carried out to explore the benefits and problems experienced by users. This revealed two major issues: information overload and lack of social presence. Information overload relates to users’ problems dealing with large numbers of messages. Social presence relates to the need for users to feel connected with each other. The second stage investigated system features aimed at addressing these issues, implemented in a prototype computer conferencing system. Features to address overload included branched message threading and user recommendations. Features to address social presence were ‘résumés’ and instant messaging. These features were evaluated using questionnaires, with several cohorts of students in an OU course. Students expressed approval of the features, although some features were not widely used. Students preferred branched threading to chronological threading because branching helped them to follow ‘conversations’. Students were uncomfortable recommending messages, feeling that the value of a message would vary between people. They were also uncomfortable using instant messaging to contact others whom they did not know. However, the awareness aspect of instant messaging provided a sense of solidarity. The research demonstrated that the problems of overload and lack of social presence are significant, and each has social aspects which must be addressed. Students’ relationships with each other affect whether and how they use the features of CMC systems. We can conclude that particular attention must be paid to the social aspects of online communication, both when designing educational CMC systems and when considering how they are used. To maximise the benefits for learning, students need to feel comfortable with each other online, and there are few short cuts to achieving this.

The research examines the difficulties relating to the construction of a computer model for the automation of the design and cost estimation practices in engineering. The research has been carried out in an industrial context and the work has included both theoretical and pragmatic issues relating to the modelling of expertise for the production of commercially useful software in the field of combustion system design. The difficulties relating to the capture of ill-defined knowledge and subjective human decision-making with 'traditional' programming languages is examined and a study undertaken regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques. A particular emphasis has been placed on decision-making under uncertainty. The work has resulted in the construction of a prototype expert system that can be used to produce design quotations relating to single burner gas-fired combustion systems. An important aspect of the decision-making characteristic of engineering design, and particularly for the cost estimating stages of a project, is the mannner in which engineers combine both cost and technical data in order to arrive at design solutions on the criterion 'value for money'. The formal mathematics of probability theory and confirmation theory provide tools for modelling expertise of this kind and the research has developed and examined two parallel systems. The first is based on the use of Bayes' theorem and the second makes use of ideas from both confirmation and fuzzy set theory. The general approach, developed within the research, of combining knowledge types relating to 'fitness for purpose' and 'cost' into ordinal measures of 'value' is fundamental to many areas of decision-making and has many applications. The research also addresses the use of rule-based methods for application domains where the knowledge is continually changing and the expertise of users is variable.

The objective of this study is an attempt t.o define a new design method merging the introduction and continuous development of computer technology in the field of building construction. The project will introduce an integrated computer system based on current state-o f-the-art technology and implementation of it through two case studies which illustrate different applications. In addition this thesis will demonstrate the potentials of the system as an analytic tool and a drawing aid for teaching architectural design as well as for the professional practitioner. The proposed system combines essentially a drafting system, a data base processing system and a visual information system, which together furnish cross-referenced graphic and numeric information of any entity (buildings, sites, technical specifications, land use information,etc.). More than a design aid, the system proposes through suitable information sources, retrieval and visualization of images stored in a. relational data base, using state-of-the-art emerging video and computer technologies.
