This thesis demonstrates the value of integrating electrical distribution engineering analysis with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The 37-Node IEEE Feeder model was used as the base distribution system in this study. It was modeled separately, both in software capable of unbalanced load-flow and in an industry-standard GIS environment. Both tools utilized were commercially available, off-the shelf products indicative of those used in academia and in basic GIS installations. The foundational data necessary to build these models is representative of information required by a variety of utility departments for a multitude of applications. It is inherent to most systems within an enterprise-level, business-wide data model and therefore can be used to support a variety of applications. In this instance, infrastructure information is assumed to be managed and housed with the GIS. This data provides the required information as input for load-flow calculations. The engineering analysis is performed within DistributionSystem 4.01 and its output is passed back to the GIS in tabular format for incorporation. This thesis investigates the transfer of information between GIS and DistributionSystem 4.01 and demonstrates the extended display capabilities in the GIS environment. This research is implemented on a small scale, but is intended to highlight the need for standardization and automatic integration of these systems as well as others that are fundamental to the effective management of electrical distribution systems.

As the usage of both BIM (Building Information Modelling) and 3D-GIS (Three-Dimensional Geographic Information Systems) has increased within the field of urban development and construction, so has the interest in connecting these two tools.  One possibility of integration is the potential of visualising BIM models together with other spatial data in 3D. Another is to be able to perform spatial 3D analyses on the models. Both of these can be achieved through use of GIS software. This study explores how integration of BIM and GIS could look. The goal was to perform typical GIS analyses in 3D on BIM models. Previous research points towards some success within the field through use of the indicated standard format for each tool – IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) for BIM and CityGML (City Geographic Markup Language) for GIS. Transformation between the formats took place through use of the BIM software Revit, the transformation tool FME and the GIS software ArcGIS. A couple of reviewed applications of GIS analyses were chosen for testing on the converted models – indoor network analysis, visibility analysis and spatial analysis for 3D buildings. The input data in the study was several BIM models, both models created for real-life usage and others that only function as sample data within the different software. From the results of the practical work it can be concluded that a simple, automated and full-scale integration does not seem to be within reach quite yet. Most transformations between IFC and CityGML failed to some extent, especially the more detailed and complex ones. In some test cases, the file could not be imported into ArcGIS and in others geometries were missing or existing even though they should not. There were also examples where geometries had been moved during the process. As a consequence of these problems, most analyses failed or did not give meaningful results. A few of the original analyses did give positive results. Combining (flawed) CityGML models with other spatial data for visualisation purposes worked rather well. Both the shadow volume and sightline analyses did also get reasonable results which indicates that there might be a future for those applications. The obstacles for a full-scale integration identified during the work were divided into four different categories. The first is BIM usage and routines where created models need to be of high quality if the final results are to be correct. The second are problems concerning the level of detail, especially the lack of common definitions for the amount of details and information. The third category concerns the connection between local and global coordinate systems where a solution in form of updates to IFC might already be in place. The fourth, and largest, category contains those surrounding the different formats and software used. Here, focus should lie on the transformation between IFC and CityGML. There are plenty of possible, future, work concerning these different problems. There is also potential in developing own tools for integration or performing different analyses than those chosen for this thesis.

Båda dessa går att utföra med hjälp av GIS-programvara. Denna studie utforskar hur en integration mellan BIM och GIS kan se ut. Målet är att genomföra typiska GIS-analyser i 3D på BIM-modeller. I vissa testfall kunde filen inte importeras i ArcGIS, i andra saknas eller existerar oväntade geometrier även om importen lyckats. Det finns också exempel där geometrier förflyttats. Som en konsekvens av dessa problem kunde de flesta 3D-analyser inte genomföras alls eller lyckades inte ge betydelsefulla resultat. Ett fåtal av de ursprungliga analyserna gav dock positiv utdelning. Att kombinera (felaktiga) CityGML-modeller med annan rumslig data fungerade förhållandevis väl ur ett visualiseringssyfte. Både skuggvolymsanalysen och framtagandet av siktlinjer från byggnaderna gav någorlunda korrekta resultat vilket indikerar att det kan finnas en framtid gällande de tillämpningarna. Hindren för en fullskalig integration som identifierades genom arbetet delades upp i fyra olika kategorier. Den första är BIM-användning där hög kvalitet på de skapade modellerna är viktigt för korrekta slutresultat. Den andra är detaljeringsgraden där avsaknaden av gemensamma definitioner för detaljeringsgraderna ställer till problem. Den tredje kategorin är koordinat- och referenssystem där en lösning på kopplingen mellan lokala och globala system redan kan finnas på plats i en av de senare utgåvorna av IFC-formatet. Den sista och största kategorin är problematiken kring just format och programvaror där mer arbete på översättningen mellan IFC och CityGML kommer att krävas. I framtiden finns det gott om arbete att göra med dessa olika problem. Det finns också potential att utveckla egna verktyg för integrationen eller att ägna sig åt att göra andra analyser än de som valdes ut i den här studien.

Surface mining activities are known to affect the quantity and quality of stormwater runoff. This can create flooding and water quality degradation of receiving streams. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977 provides regulations intended to produce environmentally acceptable results from mining operations. The SMCRA requires that extensive pre-mining monitoring be carried out to assist in determining the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) of mining. The Finite Element Storm Hydrograph Model (FESHM) was used to demonstrate the utility of hydrologic modeling concepts in simulating runoff volumes and peak flows. Guidelines were proposed for using this methodology to simulate selected pre-mining hydrologic conditions. The use of geographic information system (GIS) technology as a tool for improving data management and modeling efficiency was demonstrated. The required input watershed characteristics were digitized, stored, and manipulated using a computerized GIS. Appropriate software was developed to integrate the GIS with FESHM. The ability of FESHM to simulate runoff events in an ungaged context was evaluated using an experimental watershed. First, simulations were conducted using two separate data bases, "lumped" and "detailed", in order to evaluate the effect of limited data availability, as expected in mining regions, on FESHM's predictive ability. The "lumped" data base produced better simulation results, however, more thorough and detailed research is needed to determine the level of data resolution necessary for a given level of simulation accuracy. Next., significant runoff events from 17-years of the historical record were simulated using data from the "lumped" data base. Statistical analyses were used to make judgments on parameter estimation and model usage. Regression methodology was used to assess expected error and model bias. Simulation bias was found to be related to the input rainfall intensity levels. The results suggest that either spatial variability or parameter values were not adequately defined and that some form of calibration is needed. Two additional drainage basins were used to evaluate FESHM's predictive capabilities in situations considered representative of mining regions. The results indicated that more thorough investigations of watershed characteristics must be made, that calibration procedures should be performed for each watershed, and that FESHM does not adequately model the physical processes involved in forest hydrology.

This thesis develops and applies an integrated method of environmental assessment that couples a geographic Information system (GIS) to Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA), using bioenergy combustion and CHP sites as a case study. A literature review to identify the gaps in knowledge with respect to spatial MCA and GIS-based approaches to support decision-making and sustainability assessments shows the need for an approach to identify suitable locations for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants using bioenergy combustion and to analyse spatial aspects. CHP plants can improve the efficiency and sustainability of bioenergy generation because they are capable of producing and utilising both electrical and thermal energy. Identifying suitable locations for these, typically decentralised, plants is crucial but challenging because proximity to both feedstock supply and heat demand has to be considered. The thesis develops and applies a novel GIS-based approach to identify suitable locations for CHP bioenergy plants and to analyse spatial aspects. This work stands out as the principal novel contribution of the research presented in this thesis. The science-based technical assessment can be integrated in a formal and structured decision support framework (DSF) which could aid environmental decision-making. There is no single right way to conduct a decision-making process because every process is limited by resources and timelines. The environmental assessment case study described in this thesis uses a modified version of the MCA framework proposed by the Department for Communities and Local Government (2009). The GIS-based approach is integrated in this DSF to couple GIS to MCA. Additionally, specific attention is given to reviewing and selecting sustainability aspects (covering Criteria and Indicators) and MCA methods. These processes are also integrated in the DSF and can be seen as being part of the problem structuring phase of the DSF used in the research presented in this thesis. It is shown how the DSF is applied to assess alternatives for centralised and decentralised generation in a research case study region. By applying the different stages of the DSF, including the GIS-based approach, the selection processes and a selected MCA method (Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)), it can be concluded that the decentralised alternatives should be preferred in the research case study scenarios if regional sustainable bioenergy generation wants to be archived. In the first scenario, the second alternative (A2) clearly dominates with an overall score of 71.82% (A1: 28.18%). However, the results are relatively close in the second scenario (A3: 56.62%, A4: 43.38%), which is mainly due to the similarity of the alternatives in the scenario. The sensitivity analyses show that the rankings of alternatives do not change in both scenarios unless major criteria weight variations or performance adjustments are made.

Spatial Data Analysis (SDA) is relatively narrower and constitutes one of the areas of Spatial Analysis. Geographic Information System (GIS) offers a potentially valuable platform for supporting SDA techniques. Integration of SDA with GIS helps SDA to benefit from the data input, storage, retrieval, data manipulation and display capabilities of GIS. Also, GIS can benefit from SDA techniques in which the integration of these techniques can increase the analysis capabilities of GIS. This integration serves for disseminating and facilitating improved understanding of spatial phenomena. How SDA techniques should be integrated with GIS arise the coupling problem. The complete integration of SDA techniques in GIS can be applied without the support of GIS vendor when the free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) development methodology is properly followed. This approach causes to interpret the coupling problem in a new way. This thesis aims to develop a fully coupled SDA with GIS in FLOSS environment. A fully coupled SDA in free GIS software as FLOSS system is developed by writing nearly 13,000 line Python code in 2.5 years. Usage of this system has reached to nearly 1600 unique visitors, 3000 visits and 8600 page views in two years. As the current status of development in GIS is considered, it is unlikely in commercial market to have full coupled SDA techniques in GIS software. However, it is expected to have more SDA developments in proprietary GIS software in the near future as there is an increasing trend for requesting more sophisticated SDA tools.

Standalone computer modules for county to county travel demand forecasting have been integrated. The Trip Generation, Trip Distribution and Mode Choice modules have been unified under one Graphical User Interface (GUI). The outputs are automatically mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to allow immediate and spatial analysis. The integrated model allows for faster running times and quicker analysis of the results. The ability to calculate travel time savings for travelers was also included to the final model. The modeling framework developed is known as the Transportation Systems Analysis Model (TSAM).

This thesis outlines research completed in partnership between Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Liverpool John Moores University. The aim of the research was to investigate ways to develop and implement a bespoke Geographic Information System framework that could be used to identify risk of future anomalous accidental dwelling fires. This thesis outlines the techniques used to develop the framework and its application. In particular, the thesis presents an understanding of accidental dwelling fire causal factors and how data related to these can be incorporated into a model for identifying risk and targeting initiatives relative to the risk. The thesis also investigates two strands of customer insight developed for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. These are community profiles, based on a cluster analysis approach, to understand risks present within communities and the vulnerable person index, which identifies individuals most at risk from fire using data shared through information sharing agreements. Nationally recognised risk modelling toolkits, such as the Fire Service Emergency Cover toolkit do not utilise local information or have the ability to identify risk to an individual level. There is a need for this intelligence to be able to proactively target services, such as the Home Fire Safety Check. This paper also discusses some of the key operational and strategic areas that benefit from this information and presents some case studies related to the application of the research.

Scene mapping is an integral part of processing a forensic scene with scattered human remains. By utilizing the appropriate mapping technique, investigators can accurately document the location of human remains and maintain a precise geospatial record of this evidence at a scene. Global positioning system (GPS) units have been used for years to survey the spatial distribution of large-scale archaeological sites. However, differential global positioning (DGPS) unit now provide decreased positional error suitable for small-scale surveys, such as forensic scenes. Because of the lack of knowledge concerning this utility in mapping a scene, controlled research is necessary to determine the practicality of using DGPS in mapping scattered human remains in different environments. The purpose of this research is to quantify the accuracy of a DGPS unit for mapping skeletal dispersals and to determine the applicability of this utility in mapping dispersed remains. First, the accuracy of the DGPS unit was determined using known survey markers in different environments. Secondly, several simulated scenes were constructed and mapped in open, tree-covered, and structure-obstructed environments using the DGPS. Factors considered included the extent of the dispersal, data collection time, and the use of offsets. Data were differentially postprocessed and compared in a geographic information system (GIS) to evaluate the most efficient recordation methods. Results of this study show that the DGPS is a viable option for mapping human remains in open areas. Furthermore, guidelines for accurate scene mapping using a DGPS unit will be provided, along with a discussion concerning the integration of DGPS into GIS for scene analysis and presentation.

This study of the spatiotemporal patterns of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Iowa introduced the importance of examining the geographic patterns of four epidemiological measures (incidence, late-stage incidence, mortality, and survival) as inter-related phases in the natural history of the disease rather than as independent measures. To conduct such an analysis required the development of a framework for conducting spatiotemporal correlation analysis involving two or more measures across two or more periods. This framework is based on geographic units called spatially adaptive filter areas.which effectively address the small number problem. This common spatial epidemiology problem occurs when the population in a unit of geography is too small to calculate a reliable disease rate. The spatially adaptive filter areas are created by aggregating smaller geographic units which, by themselves, do not have sufficiently large populations to calculate statistically reliable disease rates. Conducting spatiotemporal analysis magnifies the small number problem because stratifying disease data by time further reduces the sample sizes in each period, thus increasing the potential for unreliable disease rates. This spatiotemporal framework satisfies two conditions: 1) the rates of each measure in all small areas in the study region meet a minimum level of statistical reliability in all periods, and 2) the disease outcomes measured for one period relies on the same geographic units as the rates calculated for all other periods and measures. We applied the spatiotemporal framework to colorectal cancer data collected in the state of Iowa between 1999 and 2010. Using rates calculated in spatial filter areas, we found that the proportion of cases diagnosed at a late-stage among the population at risk for CRC is more correlated with CRC mortality than when late-stage is measured as the proportion of late-stage cases among the CRC cases diagnosed at any stage. We also found that, when measured in the context of the statewide change, an observed decline in the rate of CRC mortality in a small area does not necessarily mean that its level of mortality is improving. We also found that the correlation between rates of CRC mortality and the survival time among patients diagnosed with CRC varied across Iowa. The results described in this dissertation could potentially reduce the burden of colorectal cancer and improve the health of communities by providing public health professionals and cancer control specialists with evidence to enhance their decision-making processes.

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) has been widely investigated because of its notable properties as an alternative pasture grass and as an important biofuel source. The goal of this study was to determine soil suitability for Switchgrass in Mississippi. A linear weighted additive model was developed to predict site suitability. Multicriteria analysis and Sensitivity analysis were utilized to optimize the model. The model was fit using seven years of field data associated with soils characteristics collected from NRCS-USDA. The best model was selected by correlating estimated biomass yield with each models soils-based output for Switchgrass suitability. Pearsons r (correlation coefficient) was the criteria used to establish the best soil suitability model. Coefficients associated with the best model were implemented within a Geographic Information System (GIS) to create a map of relative soil suitability for Switchgrass in Mississippi. A Geodatabase associated with soil parameters was constructed and is available for future GIS use.

Анотація:
Turkey has very different geomorphologic, hydrologic and climatic conditions, so the runoff coefficient should be different from one basin to another. But only one constant value, which is 0.37, is being used for all the basins in Turkey. In this thesis, monthly, seasonal and annual runoff coefficients of 48 sub-basins in western and southern part of Anatolia are determined by using synchronous and average rainfall, runoff data of 26 year record period. Their temporal and spatial distributions are investigated. The relationship between the basin parameters and the runoff coefficient are also examined. Some of the basins have unrealistic large runoff coefficients, therefore excluded from the analyses. The basin boundaries and parameters are determined by using Geograhic Information System (GIS), and areal average precipitations are found by a program written in visual basic language that uses ArcObjects. The Box-Cox transformed data are used in regression analysis. There are a number of dams in the region, which affect the natural flow. Such streams are found and their sub-basins are not used in the analyses. The results revealed that there is not a strong the relationship between the basin parameters and annual and seasonal runoff coefficients for the whole region, but there are significant relations between them for some basins.

Ciliwung Watershed is the most developed area in Indonesia. However, development needs have caused overexploitation of the available resources, which have eventually caused deterioration of the environment of this watershed, and caused several areas to be more prone to natural hazards. This study develops certain Geographic Information System models to identify the physical-environmental characteristics of the watershed, in an attempt to avoid further improper resources utilization. These models yield the soil erosion critical areas, landslide potential areas, the spread of sea water intrusion, land subsidence potential areas, surface runoff characteristic, natural hazards prone areas, and groundwater recharge area.Based on these yielded characteristics, the general physical capability of this watershed can be delineated, which consists of five capability zones : Zone I, the flood prone area that also occupies by seawater intrusion and potential land subsidence areas; Zone II, the area that is affected by excessive groundwater withdrawal, which has sea water intrusion areas and prone to land subsidence; Zone III, the groundwater recharge area for Jakarta Plain; Zone IV, the most capable area for physical development; and Zone V, upper part of the watershed which has landslide potential areas, soil erosion critical areas, and volcanic eruption prone areas.

The geography of food has been a popular subject for researchers and scholars who have explored the representative foods of a given region in reference to the area’s cultural identity. Food plays an important role in the development of individual cultures and civilization. Food consumption and dining habits usually reflect individuals’ location, cultural and individual identity, accessibility to food and heritage. United States is a country often called a “melting pot society.” Immigrants in the United States comprise over eight percent of the population, and various ethnic groups have reshaped American society with their unique cultures and foodways. Driven in part by globalization, food has been commercialized in an effort to increase profit and broaden the diversity of foods available for consumption. By studying ethnic restaurants and the food they offer, one can gain a basic understanding of other information related to ethnic groups. The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in ethnic restaurant numbers, types, and locations from 1940 to 2005, as well as changing demographic patterns in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I hypothesize that a relationship exists between the numbers, locations and diversity of ethnic restaurants and ethnic populations in Bowling Green. Globalization and the influx of ethnic groups will reshape the diversity of ethnic cuisines between 1940 to 2005. In addition, changes in Bowling Green income, education level and ethnic structure are associated with increasing diversity of ethnic restaurants. Relationships between the locations of ethnic neighborhoods and ethnic restaurants are also examined. The methods of investigation in this thesis include assembling a database of historic restaurant information and using GIS technology to map locations of ethnic restaurants and analyze spatial patterns and ethnic diversity of restaurant types. In order to investigate the association between ethnic structure, income and education level of Bowling Green’s population and the diversity of ethnic restaurant over time, data was collected from the decennial Census of Population and Housing. To research current consumer preferences, a survey was conducted to discover the most influential factors impacting residents’ choice of cuisines and the variation in restaurant preferences among age groups. Interviews with owners of ethnic restaurant shed light on locational choices.

The dissertation will outline an object-oriented model from which a next-generation GIS can be derived. The requirements for a spatial information analysis and modeling system can be broken into three primary functional classes: data management (data classification and access), analysis (modeling, optimization, and simulation) and visualization (display of data). These three functional classes can be considered as the primary colors of the spectrum from which the different shades of spatial analysis are composed. Object classes will be developed which will be designed to manipulate the three primary functions as required by the user and the data.

The Environmental Resource Mapping System (E-RMS) is a geographic information system (GIS) that is used by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to assist in management of national parks. The package is available commercially from the Service and is used by other government departments for environmental management. E-RMS has also been present in Australian Universities and used for academic work for a number of years. This thesis demonstrates that existing procedures for product quality and performance have not been followed in the production of the package and that the package and therefore much of the work undertaken with the package is fundamentally flawed. The E-RMS software contains and produces a number of serious mistakes. Several problems are identified and discussed in this thesis. As a result of the shortcomings, the author recommends that an enquiry be conducted to investigate *1/ The technical feasibility of each project for which the E-RMS package has been used; *2/ The full extent and consequences of the failings inherent with the package; and *3/ The suitability of the E-RMS GIS package for the purposes for which it is sold. Australian Standard 3898 requires that the purpose, functions and limitations of consumer software shall be described. To comply with this standard, users of the E-RMS package would have to be informed of several factors related to it. These are discussed in the research. Failure to consider the usefulness and extractable nature of information in any GIS database will inevitably lead to problems that may endanger the phenomena that the GIS is designed to protect.

Abstract. BIM (Building Information Model) and GIS (Geographic Information System) have been rapidly developed in recent years due to their respective strengths in projects. But these two systems are totally different on focus, reference systems and data storage. With the increasing discussion about integrated BIM-GIS and technologies development, application fields, solutions and challenges are continuously updated and developed. However, the actual application of BIM and GIS integration has not been better implemented because it is restricted to certain extent by different regions, different projects and certain technical constraints. To better explore the integration of BIM and GIS, this paper reviews the development progress of BIM and GIS integration, the exiting integration methods at data level, process level and application level, and the remaining integrated challenges through the studies of 43 relevant research articles, and analyzes the actual situation of integration application through the results of questionnaire. Based on the literature review and a questionnaire, there are still technical problems in BIM-GIS integration including transformation accuracy, semantic simplification and geometric information filtering and so on, and integrated BIM-GIS is currently rarely used in the AEC industry. But due to the benefits of the integration, there is no doubt that integrated BIM-GIS system can bring significant value to the AEC industry.

Abstract 1 – A Geographic Information System for Evaluating Residential Pesticide Exposure and Prostate Cancer Incidence Agricultural pesticide exposure is hypothesized to be a risk factor for prostate cancer, and such exposures are of particular concern for men living in farming communities where large-scale pesticide applications occur. Prostate cancer incidence data were obtained from the State Health Registry of Iowa for the years 1996 through 2006, and county and census tract level age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated. Historical crop-specific land use records and pesticide sales data for the state of Iowa during 1990 were integrated into a geographic information system (GIS), where estimates of predicted exposure to the four most commonly used pesticides in Iowa (atrazine, metolachlor, cyanazine, alachlor) were produced. Ecological correlation between pesticide exposure and prostate cancer incidence was evaluated using Spearman’s (rank) correlation coefficient and linear regression analysis. Statistically significant associations between prostate cancer incidence and percent of acres of corn and soybean crops were found at both the county (r=0.22, p=.031 and r=0.33, p=.001, respectively) and census tract (r=0.10, p=.007 and r=0.13, p<.001, respectively) level. The associations between percent of land exposed to the specific pesticides and prostate cancer were not statistically significant. Our findings suggest that residential proximity to corn and soybean fields, and by association the pesticides used on those crops, is correlated with increased prostate cancer risk, but that the increase in risk is not correlated with exposure to the four most commonly used pesticides in Iowa in 1990. Findings from this study underscore the need for continued investigation of the association between agricultural exposures and prostate cancer incidence. Abstract 2 – Spatial Analysis of Prostate Cancer Incidence and Residential Pesticide Exposure in Iowa A statistically significant positive association between prostate cancer incidence and residential proximity to corn and soybean fields in Iowa exists. Research suggests that exposure to pesticides used on these crops increases prostate cancer risk. The objective of this study was to investigate clustering of prostate cancer risk in the presence of potential exposure to pesticides in Iowa. Prostate cancer incidence data (1996-2006) were obtained from the State Health Registry of Iowa. Using SaTScan software, clusters of high and low prostate cancer risk were identified. Ecological correlation between exposure to the four most commonly used pesticides (atrazine, metolachlor, cyanazine, alachlor) in Iowa during 1990 and residence in a cluster of relatively high or low prostate cancer incidence was evaluated using Pearson’s chi-square test statistic and logistic regression analysis. Clusters of increased prostate cancer risk were associated with a greater percentage of land used for all crops of interest (i.e., corn and soybean farming (p <0.001), corn farming (p <0.001), soybean farming (p <0.001)) and low exposure to alachlor (p =0.032) than did clusters with decreased risk of prostate cancer. After adjustment for percent of land used for each crop type, no association between pesticide exposure and prostate cancer risk was observed. Residence in or near agricultural communities increases prostate cancer risk. Our findings suggest that residential proximity to exposures specific to corn and soybean farming increases prostate cancer risk. Evaluation of exposure to less commonly used pesticides and those used in lower quantities is needed.   Abstract 3 – Multilevel Analysis of Residential Pesticide Exposure and Prostate Cancer Incidence An association between residential exposure to factors specific to corn and soybean farms in Iowa exists. The objectives of this study were to statistically assess spatial autocorrelation in prostate cancer incidence in Iowa and to evaluate the effect of residential exposure to the most commonly used pesticides for corn and soybean farms in Iowa in 1990 on prostate cancer incidence. Prostate cancer incidence data were obtained from the State Health Registry of Iowa for the years 1996 through 2006. Spatial patterning of age-adjusted incidence rates was assessed via Moran’s I global index of spatial autocorrelation. A hierarchical regression modeling approach with an assumed Poisson distribution was used to characterize the relationship between census tract level prostate cancer incidence and exposure to pesticides. Statistically significant spatial patterning of prostate cancer incidence, corn and soybean fields and pesticide use (p<.001 for all variables) was observed. After adjustment for individual and area level characteristics, prostate cancer risk increased by approximately 25% for each percentage point increase in percent of land used for corn and soybean crops. Prostate cancer risk was approximately 25% higher for Black men exposed to corn and soybean fields compared to white men exposed to corn and soybean fields. Results from this study support the need for further evaluation of residential exposure to environmental hazards specific to corn and soybean farming.

Improving cancer care through clinical research is a major public health issue. However, in Georgia, the exact number of cancer clinical trials is unknown, indicating the need for baseline data regarding cancer clinical trial locations and cancer burden. This study provides the first statewide analysis of cancer clinical trial locations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This study examines cancer clinical trial locations by county, according to incidence rates, racial patterns and mortality rates of the four major cancer types: breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate. Findings from this study suggest that metro-Atlanta counties have higher densities of cancer clinical trials. This study also found that there were little or no cancer clinical trials available in counties with the highest rates of overall incidence, African American incidence and overall mortality. This research demonstrates the need to increase availability of cancer clinical trials in counties with the highest cancer burden.

Current vegetation classes were generated from remotely sensed data to provide coarse-level information for an ecosystem management plan developed at Camp Williams, Utah. Vegetation trend from 1973 - 1993 was also examined via satellite imagery. The data set consisted of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) images from July or August of 1973, 1975, 1980, 1988, and 1993. Two approaches were used to detect vegetation change. The first approach determined overall and cover type trend from standard digital image differencing of soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) images. The second approach used an unsupervised classification of a composite SAVI image of all dates. The first approach defined areas of increase, decrease, and no significant change in SAVI and differences in trend for tree versus shrub cover types. The second approach resulted in an ecological classification that defined new environmental patterns based on vegetation trend.

Wetland monitoring and preservation efforts have the potential to be enhanced with advanced remote sensing acquisition and digital image analysis approaches. Progress in the development and utilization of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) as remote sensing platforms has offered significant spatial and temporal advantages over traditional aerial and orbital remote sensing platforms. Photogrammetric approaches to generate high spatial resolution orthophotos of UAV acquired imagery along with the UAV?s low-cost and temporally flexible characteristics are explored. A comparative analysis of different spectral based land cover maps derived from imagery captured using UAV, satellite, and airplane platforms provide an assessment of the Huntington Beach Wetlands. This research presents a UAS remote sensing methodology encompassing data collection, image processing, and analysis in constructing spectral based land cover maps to augment the efforts of the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy by assessing ecological and temporal changes at the Huntington Beach Wetlands.

Current models that assess infrastructure failure risk are â linear,â and therefore, only consider the direct influence attributed to each factor that defines risk. These models do not consider the undeniable relationships that exist among these parameters. In reality, factors that define risk are interdependent and influence each other in a â non-linearâ fashion through feedback effects. Current infrastructure failure risk assessment models are also static, and do not allow infrastructure managers and decision makers to evaluate the impacts over time, especially the long-term impact of risk mitigation actions. Factors that define infrastructure failure risk are in constant change. In a strategic manner, this research proposes a new risk-based infrastructure management framework and supporting system, Risk-Based Dynamic Infrastructure Management System (RiskDIMS), which moves from linear to non-linear risk assessment by applying systems engineering methods and analogs developed to address non-linear complex problems. The approach suggests dynamically integrating principal factors that define infrastructure failure risk using a unique platform that leverages Geospatial Information System services and extensions in an unprecedented manner. RiskDIMS is expected to produce results that are often counterintuitive and unexpected, but aligned to our complex reality, suggesting that the combination of geospatial and temporal analyses is required for sustainable risk-based decision making. To better illustrate the value added of temporal analysis in risk assessment, this study also develops and implements a non-linear dynamic model to simulate the behavior over time of infrastructure failure risk associated with an existing network of levees in New Orleans due to diverse infrastructure management investments. Although, the framework and RiskDIMS are discussed here in the context of levees, the concept applies to other critical infrastructure assets and systems. This research aims to become the foundation for future risk analysis system implementation.

This research is aimed at developing a model for estimating peak discharge rates and design flood hydrographs for the Machchan catchment in the semi-arid region of Gujarat, India. For many such catchments flow data are not available or are insufficient to extrapolate for determination of design flows. For such situations some direct approaches are required to give information on peak discharge rates and hydrographs. Several methods have been developed by researchers for the design of peak river flow in ungauged catchments but these different methods are complementary to each other. The Cascaded Reservoir Model developed in this research combines some of these methods namely, SCS method, time–area histogram method and Muskingum flood routing method formulated the model.

In this thesis work, we compare the results obtained from two kinds of teams forming a hierarchical organization participating in a fire fighting simulation environment called as C3Fire. First kind of teams used paper-based maps for spatial reasoning of the command tool while the other kind of teams has GIS based maps with full access to positioning data of the fire fighting units as well as sensor information about fire break.

The collected data was from 11 teams of each kind having 6 members in each team making a total of 132 participants belonging to different parts of the world.

We made a statistical analysis on the data with help of T-Test statistical medhod and a tool is designed by using Java as programming language and PostgreSQL database for importing data from log files and then applying statistical T-Test method on the fetching data from log files.The results are stored in database as well as excel files. Then a comparison is done to analyze the unit performance, communication and efficiency of both kinds of teams.

A population survey was conducted from April through September 2002 on mosquito species occurring on the Ray Roberts Greenbelt, a riparian corridor used for public recreation on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, in Denton County, Texas. ArcGIS software was used to set up a stratified random sampling design based on habitat parameters. Multivariate analyses of sampling data and climatic variables were used to describe spatial and temporal patterns of mosquito species. A total of 33 species were collected during this study belonging to the following genera: Aedes, Anopheles, Coquillettidia, Culex, Mansonia, Ochlerotatus, Orthopodomyia, Psorophora, Toxorhynchites, and Uranotaenia. Seasonal distributions of the dominant species revealed population fluctuations. Aedes vexans was the primary species collected in April and May, occurring in low numbers throughout the rest of the sampling period. Psorophora columbiae reached its highest population density in June, with a smaller peak occurring in late July. Present from May through the end of September, Culex erraticus was the most abundant species collected with major peaks in mid-June and the end of July. Abundance of Culex salinarius followed the same general trend as that for Cx. erraticus, but with smaller numbers. The specimens were tested for a variety of arboviruses by the Texas Department of Health. One pool of Cx. erraticus and Cx. salinarius, collected in August 2002, tested positive for West Nile virus. Variables that were important factors for determining dominant species abundance were temperature, wind speed, rain accumulation occurring one-week and two-weeks prior to sampling, number of day since last rain event, dew point, and average canopy coverage.

Leishmaniasis has been described by the World Health Organisation as a ‘neglected disease’ and not well understood, which reflects the variations in transmission cycle, reservoirs, vectors, clinical manifestations, and its associations with many human factors. One country where Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a major health issue is Saudi Arabia. This thesis investigates factors influencing the prevalence of CL in Al-Dawadmi Governorate, Saudi Arabia in the period between January 2006 and April 2011 from a multidisciplinary perspective. Meteorological data were used to investigate the influence of climatic variables on the seasonality of CL in the study area. The research also involved surveys of land use / cover around six communities in the protectorate and a case-control study of 125 CL cases and 125 controls to assess the role of socio-economic factors. Additionally, an assessment was made of CL cases that were not officially reported to the health authority. Four main factors were found to influence the prevalence of CL cases in the governorate. There was a very strong, temporally-lagged, relationship between monthly temperature and rainfall and reporting of CL cases. Within individual communities, the case-control results indicated there was a strong association between the presence of certain land cover types or land uses within 300 metre and the probability of contracting CL. A number of socio-economic and demographic factors were also found to be correlated with a higher risk of contracting CL. In addition, socio-economic factors and contrasts in accessibility to health services influenced the reporting of CL cases to the authorities. Overall, the results suggest that a multi-faceted approach to reducing the prevalence of CL is required. Public authorities need to be aware of the meteorological trigger conditions, undertake reservoir eradication activities in certain circumstances, improve access to key diagnostic health services and, most cost-effectively, undertake initiatives to improve public awareness of the key risk factors, relevant mitigation measures and the advantages of seeking prompt treatment.

The thesis deals with geographical information systems ( GIS) which are nowadays common tools for use in civil service and local administration. The theoretical part is focused on more detailed characterization of these systems including issues concerning geographical data and data base systems. The description of the particular GIS software solution for the selected village of Dolní Újezd in the application of ArcInfo is the main contain of the practical sections. The creation of spatial analysis is a component of the project with the aim of finding a suitable location for benches for public use. The resulting project called “GIS Dolní Újezd”wil be used by the local council in Dolní Újezd.

Este estudo apresenta uma análise sobre a aplicação do geoprocessamento integrado à técnica de Análise Envoltória de Dados (Data Envelopment Analysis - DEA), relacionada a distribuição espacial de empresas em unidades produtivas representadas por áreas de zoneamento do solo urbano, utilizando dados socioeconômicos multitemporais. O trabalho tem como área de estudo o Município de Osasco, localizado na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, que faz parte do trecho Oeste do Sistema Viário Rodoanel Mário Covas. Desta forma, a análise de instalação de empresas nos períodos anterior e posterior a implantação do sistema viário Rodoanel, poderá servir de apoio na avaliação de mudanças ou transformações empresariais (indústria, comércio e serviços) no uso e ocupação do solo no Município de Osasco. De uma forma mais específica, o estudo buscou avaliar a influência dos fatores espaciais no processo de localização e migração de empresas, focando em alterações no uso do solo com ênfase no zoneamento do município e em função da melhoria de infra-estrutura relacionada à construção de uma grande obra viária e tomando como base períodos de tempo e situações urbanas distintas. Para traçar este panorama foram utilizadas informações sócioeconômicas, dados cadastrais de empresas e o zoneamento municipal associadas a dados geográficos, os quais permitiram compor cenários multitemporais de cada momento urbano. Estes cenários foram representados e analisados no capítulo de resultados utilizando o índice de instalação de empresas em conjunto com as analises espaciais do SIG, que proporcionou uma análise temporal quantitativa da distribuição de empresas no Município de Osasco.
This study presents an analysis on GIS application integrated to Data Envelopment Analysis - DEA, related to spatial distribution of companies in productive units represented by zoning areas of the urban land and using socioeconomic data of different time periods. The work has Osasco\'s Municipal district as the area of study, located in São Paulo\'s Metropolitan Region, it makes part of the west section of the Mário Covas Rodoanel road system. Thus, the analysis will support in the changes evaluation or managerial transformations (industries, commerce and services) in the Osasco\'s Municipal district land use, current of the Rodoanel road system implantation. In a more specific way, the study sought to evaluate the influence of the space factors in the companies location and migration process, focusing on alterations in the land use with emphasis in the municipal district zoning and in infrastructure improvement function related to construction of a big road and taking as time\'s base periods and distinct urban situations. To trace this panorama were used socioeconomic information, cadastral data of companies and the municipal zoning associated to geographical data, to compose urban scenarios in different time periods. These scenarios were represented and analyzed in the results chapter using the companies installation index together with Spatial GIS Analysis, who provided a quantitative temporal analysis of distribution of companies in Osasco\'s Municipal distritct.

Groundwater level models have an important role in the development and application of water management and policies. Understanding the temporal and spatial variations of groundwater levels in the Gorran water protection area in Nynäshamn is important for developing management strategies. Geostatistical analysis with several different methods was used to compare groundwater level records for 13 observation wells in Gorran from 1994 to 2012. The performance of the different methods was evaluated by using mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) metrics. The results showed that geostatistical methods had a higher general accuracy when utilizing the Empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) method in Gorran. EBK was the best method with highest precision and lowest mean absolute error. Cross-validation was also applied to evaluate the best (smallest) root mean square error (RMSE). A predicted potentiometric groundwater level was estimated from the basis of the available digital elevation model to extend the observation area within the same geological specification.
Grundvattennivåns modeller har en viktig roll i utvecklingen och tillämpningen av vattenförvaltning och politik. Genom att förstå de tidsmässiga och geografiska variationer grundvattennivån i Gorran skyddat område är viktigt för att utveckla hanteringens strategier.Geostatistical analys med olika modeller som Inverse Distanse Weighted, Radial Basic Funktion och kriging modeller användes för att jämföra grundvattennivåns rekord under 13 observations brunnar 1994 till 2012. Prestandan hos metoder utvärderades med hjälp av medelabsolutfelet (MAE) och rot medelkvadratfelet (RMSE). Resultatet visade att geostatistiska metoder hade högre noggrannhet och Empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) var den bästa metoden med högsta precision och lägst medelabsolutfel. Cross-validering applicerades också för att utvärdera de bästa minsta kvadratiska medelvärdet (RMSE). Förutsatt potentiometrisk grundvattennivå genomfördes från digital höjdmodell för att förlänga observations område inom samma geologiska specifikation.

The terrorist attacks on New York City on September 11, 2001 heightened awareness about the need to plan for emergency evacuation measures. As a result, three-Dimensional (3D) city and building models have become an important part of GIS analysis. The technology can be used to plan evacuations in complex indoor environments. This thesis had two main objectives. The first goal was to conduct a 3D network analysis of a building for emergency management, which was based on a 3D model of a building in the city of Gävle, Sweden. This 3D model identifies the shortest path from any room to the defined exit. The second objective was to test the predicted evacuation times with a simulation experiment. The 3D model was built by Google Sketch Pro 8 and the 3D network analysis was mainly conducted in the ESRI’s ArcGIS software. The simulation experiment involved 18 volunteers at the organization Future Position X. The 3D network analysis was based on distance measurements instead of GNSS coordinates. The simulation experiment was conducted in four different situations. Crowding was found to be a critical problem during evacuation. Evacuation speeds varied from normal walking to running. However, crowding always increased the evacuation time and thus would affect the survival rate. Evacuation routes should be distributed differently to reduce this problem. The thesis also identifies other factors to be considered when planning emergency routes and challenges posed by the software at this time.

This doctoral thesis deals with the issue of solving massive tasks in GIS. These tasks process large volumes of geographic data with different formats. The thesis describes a theoretical analysis of the complexity of tasks and the possibilities to optimize sub-processes which lead to an acceptable solution. It considers the possibility of using parallelism in GIS, which leads to an acceleration in the processing of large volumes of geographic data. It also proposes a method for the optimization of processes through an algorithm which determines the number of means necessary for the successful solution of a task at a specified time and assigns processes to these means. Additionally, there is a proposed algorithm for the optimization of the preparation of data for extensive GIS projects. The algorithms have been validated by the results of a research project, the aim of which was to analyse the terrain surface above a gas line in the Czech Republic. The primary method of analysis was the classification of an orthophoto image, which was further refined through filtration using the ZABAGED layers. Therefore, the thesis deals with the possibility of improving the results of image classification using GIS instruments as well as dealing with the determination of the error rate in analysis results. The results of the analysis are now used for the strategic planning of maintenance and the development of gas facilities in the Czech Republic. The results of the work have general importance regarding the performance of other operations of the same class in GIS.
