ABSTRACTIt is widely agreed that learning to read starts with the establishment of letter-to-phoneme correspondences. However, it is also widely agreed that prereaders do not have access to phoneme units. Here we show that the building of associations between letters and syllables, which we call the ‘syllabic bridge’, might be a faster and more direct way of learning spelling-to-sound correspondences in French. After a few minutes of exposure, prereaders are able to learn the statistical properties of letter co-occurrences. Statistical learning is boosted by explicit instructions about the associations between letter clusters and syllables. Building the syllabic bridge from available phonological syllables and frequent letter clusters may therefore be the first step in learning to read.

The aim of this research was to provide to eight children with Down Syndrome a syllable-processing software program that drew their attention to phonological and orthographic syllables. The children participated in a 10-hour training course (spread over 5 weeks) that used an experimental design with four assessment sessions, the first two of which were used to obtain a baseline in literacy skills. The effect of training was assessed just after training and two months later. A significant effect on decoding was observed at medium term after training. All children progressed in at least one domain, either in phonological skills, in decoding, or in word reading. Four children progressed in decoding and word reading. This study confirms the appropriateness of using phonetic approaches to reading instruction in order to stimulate learning to read in children with Down Syndrome. The syllable-based training facilitates the construction of associations between letters and syllables—the “syllabic bridge”—and could be a faster and easier way to learn letter-sound correspondences in French.

Syllabus designers usually ignore the views and perceptions of the teachers while constructing the courses: but they need to explore and analyse the teachers’ perceptions towards syllabus and textbooks to make the course more advance. The purpose of the research study explores teachers’ perceptions on BA first year compulsory English syllabus and the textbooks prescribed in Tribhuvan University. This study aims to investigate how English teachers has viewed the compulsory English syllabus and the textbooks prescribed from the perspectives of teaching learning English language and communicative skills, and assessed the syllabus on the basis of components of syllabus design. The study deployed the qualitative approach through interviews to inquiry the required information from the selected teachers; four English teachers who have taught the syllabus and textbooks were interviewed with purposive sampling from the constituent campuses TU of Kathmandu Valley. The major findings of this study were as follows in course design: First, the analysis of needs of students and targeted job markets were not considered. Second, the course designers included only writing critical essays through reading but ignored other writings and language skills like listening, speaking, reading and communicative skills. Third, the teachers agreed that syllabus designers never consulted with faculty and students while reconstructing the syllabus. Fourth, the contents of the syllabus were designed as in the textbooks. Fifth, the teaching pedagogies were not suggested, but the teachers expected it. They suggested that the syllabus should bridge the gap between schooling education and BA first year education, and address real life and target professional needs. Based on these findings, other researchers can extend and re-examine the findings of this study, and syllabus designers will incorporate the ignored English language and communicative skills in future syllabus. Although such research seems money and time consuming, later it will be rewarding after identifying the syllabus’s effect.

This article consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part focuses on the ideas of informal text analytics (ITA) and the methodology for expert text analysis (META). I examine these ideas at the interface of theoretical research and education. I show that Aristotle’s works on logic transcend formal analytics – i.e. logic – to enter the realm of informal analytics. I prove this hypothesis through exploring Aristotle’s analysis of question and question/answer procedures (QAP). I emphasise that, when discussing the problem of formulating questions, Aristotle suggests that not only the formal procedures of proof and argumentation but also the characteristics of persons posing questions should be taken into account. The latter builds a bridge between Aristotle’s vision and informal text analytics. The practical part comprises the syllabus that I prepared for a relevant course. The syllabus outlines the ways to wed both avenues of analytics.

This piece charts the creation of a gallery within an ethnic studies unit, a syllabus in conjunction with said space, and a student-artist group exhibition titled Objects Who Hold/Objects Who Let Go. The exhibition asks one to consider how we learn to withhold and let go of the memories that bridge gaps between permanence and ephemerality. Curated in community by the artists themselves, the show drives the audience to embrace this tension of holding on and letting go as one intentionally engages with experimental art that pushes the boundaries of race, gender, and sexuality across expressions of loss and mourning.

Conceptualized as writing for justice, I offer close-scrutiny and analyses of teaching artifacts that animate my course syllabi in order to understand how first-year composition (FYC) courses might function as a vehicle for advancing social justice. Specifically, this essay offers a framework for enabling students with the critical capacities to transfer social justice knowledge from the classroom to the street. With close readings of my curricula and borrowing from the scholarship on knowledge transfer studies (Bawarshi & Reiff 2011; Beaufort 2007; Yancey 2011), I bridge the theoretical framework of writing for justice to a practice of writing for justice in curriculum design and development. As I argue here, this aspect of the curriculum provides the framework for crafting a FYC curriculum that aims to transform undergraduate students’ cognitive schemas by forming new “impressions” (Ahmed 2004) of social justice.

This article is aimed at identifying ways in which Learning Freedom bridges the gap between student’s English skills and the English competencies expected in supra-national documents such as Common European Frame of Reference, Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum, and Indonesian Qualification Framework (IQF). Using tourism core competencies (Semrad, et al, 2012; Zehrer & Mössenlechner, 2009) and competency-based learning theories (Cañado, 2012; Dooly, 2013), the study extracts competencies in the documents and, using syllabus development theories (Alsubaie, 2016), it integrates them into English for Tourism and Hospitality syllabus. Using student active learning paradigms (Seigel & Rockwood, 1993), it also teases out how Learning Freedom as an education policy offers opportunities to educational trainings. Data were collected through note-taking of key ideas in the policy documents and through interviews of tourism stakeholders, experts, and practitioners. The information was identified and classified based on content. The study explicated 47 key ideas, half of which are integrated into an English-for-Tourism-and-Hospitality syllabus and another half was implemented through 2-day industrial visit practicum and 8-day on-the-job internship programs implemented within Learning Freedom paradigms. The study shows effective use of the materials in increasing English competencies but the increase is below the target and more training is recommended.

The Tocharians composed verse in hierarchical structures, with the verse dominating major cola, and the major colon in turn dominating one or more minor cola. After providing much-needed descriptive data on Tocharian meter, we assess the evidence for the distinction between major vs. minor caesurae in some of the most popular Tocharian B meters, finding support for the commonly assumed colometries in some but not all cases. Of particular interest is the recurring 4+3-syllable colon, since the violability of its internal (putatively minor) caesura varies significantly across meters. We argue that this varying strictness is indeed a function of the meter as opposed to position in the verse, verse length, idiosyncrasies of certain texts, and so forth. We then use a systematic prose comparison method to test the meters for bridges, finding evidence for monosyllable avoidance in (certain) colon-final positions, despite an overall preference for monosyllables in verse vis-à-vis prose. Finally, we discuss the implications that our study has for the restoration of fragmentary Tocharian texts.

Abstract The objectives of this study were to investigate the degree to which first-year students are underprepared for university physics due Covid-19 pandemic, and get insight on what could be the intervention strategies with which their conceptual gaps can be bridged by higher education institutions. This was achieved by conducting a qualitative study on a sample of 72 students who are enrolled in extended engineering programmes in a South African university. The collected categorical data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of this study show that more than half of the respondents did not complete the matric physics syllabus and were extremely underprepared for their university physics lectures. In particular, they lack conceptual understanding of Newtonian mechanics. These students welcome the idea of being given lecture videos and/or in-person lectures/workshops, by the university, with which they could revise the matric syllabus before they start attending university physics classes. Moreover, the results reveal that the majority of students appreciate the coupling of the foundation physics and mainstream physics modules. The results further show that it could be more effective to have students simulating half of their physics experiments in a computer before they conduct them in a laboratory.

Structural Dynamics has gained prominence recently due to (i) vibration problems in slender structures that have emerged as a result of new materials technology and aesthetic requirements, (ii) ageing bridge structures whose health needs to be monitored and appropriate retrofitting carried out to prevent failure and (iii) increased vulnerability of structures to seismic, impact and blast loads. Knowledge of structural dynamics is necessary to address these issues and their consequences. In recent times, structural dynamics research has generated considerable amount of new knowledge to address these issue, but this is not readily available to practicing engineers as very little or none of it enters the class rooms. This paper argues for the need to include structural dynamics and the new research knowledge into the syllabus of all civil engineering courses, especially those with a major in structural engineering. This will enable our future structural engineers to design and maintain safe and efficient structures.

This paper examines the actual knowledge regarding Building Performance Simulation Tools (BPSTs) of recent graduate architects in Spain. BPSTs quantify aspects of building performance that are relevant to design, construction, and operation. Recent graduate architects are those who have been awarded a first degree from a university or college and face their first professional experience. This article aims to identify the deficiencies within the current curricula of Spanish universities relating to BPSTs. The authors have surveyed 171 recent graduate architects, and the analysis of the data reveals the deficiencies in university education. Regarding the collected results, the Spanish university syllabi must undergo necessary modifications to encourage the use of simulation as a part of university training courses. The incorporation of energy simulation in such training courses can provide recent graduate architects with tools that would assist them during the design stage. The use of these tools is key in the development of innovative pedagogy-based teaching materials for the courses. In this sense, the present work aims to delve into the usage deficiencies associated with BPSTs and propose ways in which to bridge the gap between higher education and first professional experiences.

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia has long been known for its marine potential. This potential comes with new challenges, one of them being language problem. In this regard, English shows its prominent role as the international language to bridge communications. This research provided a needs analysis to identify the “necessities”, “lacks”, and “wants” in relation with English usage in maritime sector, specifically for those conducting internship at international ships. A qualitative approach and a descriptive design were applied in this research. The respondents consisted of 19 students of Polimarin who had completed internship at international ships, selected through total sampling technique. Their responses were collected by a questionnaire, complemented by interview. The collected data were then processed through a model consisting of four stages; data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The “necessities” analysis revealed speaking and vocabulary as the most needed language skill and component. The “lacks” analysis showed that the syllabus used pays attention to English language skills and components evenly and that some respondents were underprepared before doing internship. The “wants” analysis came up with the simple present tense and the simple past tense as the most wanted tenses to master, pronouns as the most wanted grammatical feature and passive voice as the least wanted, all language functions evenly wanted, and group discussion as the most preferred learning activity. In conclusion, syllabus revision is due to improve the quality of English learning by accommodating the students’ “necessities”, “lacks”, and “wants”. Key words:ESP, Maritime English, Needs Analysis

Walking is one of the oldest means of mobility. It is an indispensable necessity to reach destinations despite the fact that walking or walking is one of everyday activities of man, which have positive effects on health, and activity on the one hand; vehicles cannot reach destinations only required by often walking from the other. The main problem address by the research is the random passage of the sieve and uncontrolled when it is most designs for the city’s road network have not addressed. This fundamental problem as well as the lack of a city to the safe facilities to cross the pedestrian. Therefore, this paper is a trial to study and analyze the current reality of crossing the sap then find solutions and treatments that reduce or limit the overlap between different traffic events and events crossing the pedestrian. Field data on the syllabic traffic volumes collected in all areas of the study (peak hour volume) and the photographic technique method. The study chose four areas to study the sap (60th Street, 40th Street, Al-Hussein, intersection circle at Babel Health Department), which are residential, commercial and educational zones, representing diversity in land use and scheme sidewalk and the design of the city of Hilla. The study attempted to show the state of lateral walks. The study also used the questionnaire method (interview survey) to determine the suitability of pedestrian bridges in transit and land transit. The study concluded that the area of Al-Hussein represents the highest traffic volumes of the sieve in addition to the lack of it the sidewalks in terms of absorption and quality and abuses. As well as the reluctance to use pedestrian bridges in transit in the area of 60th Street through high ground transit time, which necessitates the establishment of dual-step (fixed and mobile) – legislation and education through all means.

Covid-19 has impacted profoundly the business environment. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) becomes not only the major platform but also sustains the existence and running most business. Retail business becomes more dependent on technology. Small Business Enterprises (SME) have to jump and become savvy in ICT. The SME supply chain and marketing environment are moving toward ICT based platforms. On the other side the penetration of social media tool especially smartphone is widely spread. It can be safely assumed that every job holder whether entrepreneur, employee, or professionals or craftspeople is familiar with smartphones. The gap that must be bridged is using smartphone for business purposes. One of the business requirements that are not easy to replace is face to face communications. As Internet is ubiquitous and smartphones can easily access the Internet, there are numerous application that can resides both in computers and smartphones. The application that is closely similar to face to face meeting is known as Video Conference call. With this application it is possible to perform business briefing any time and anywhere provided there is Internet access. As business communication is not limited to technically savvy parties, a supportive system must be selected and introduced to them. We select Zoom as the application and develop a simple training syllabus. The syllabus has been implemented to a retail chain.

The HIV epidemic has been present in Indonesia for the past twenty years, despite various prevention efforts. However, the trend is very concerning, so it is critical to innovate in the prevention of HIV-AIDS, particularly through sexual transmission, as the rate of increase is very rapid. One way to avoid it is to raise a sakinah family, which instills a sense of mutual loyalty to a partner. Pre-marital courses can help to start the development of a sakinah family. The purpose of the pre-wedding course is to provide young people of marriageable age and brides-to-be with knowledge, understanding, skills, and awareness-raising about domestic and family life. This pre-wedding course is a three-day, 24-hour briefing (shot course) for teenagers of marriageable age or prospective brides. Teaching and learning facilities for organizing pre-marital courses include syllabus, modules, and other teaching materials required for learning. The syllabus and modules prepared by the Ministry of Religion for pre-marital course organizers can be correlated with material on HIV and the importance of Counseling and Testing on Health Officer Initiation (KTIP) and Voluntary Counseling and Testing (KTS), both of which are critical components in efforts to prevent HIV transmission. Furthermore, it can deepen material that synergizes with the purpose of marriage, namely forming a sakinah family and avoiding HIV, namely option B (Be Faithful), meaning being mutually loyal to one sex partner, and if the test result is positive, you can still get married then use option C (Condom).

The curriculum design is an integral part of engineering degree, which is nowadays taking a paradigm shift. The syllabi for engineering graduates a decade ago was completely academic but now there is a scope for more real time analysis, which makes the students, be industry ready. This is more beneficial as it will require less training period for the students, when they are absorbed in their respective industry. Therefore, the internship programme has been included in the curriculum of most of the universities and being a credit course, it allows more students to participate. In addition, if the interns score credits for the same, the method of evaluation and assessment tools needs proper design. Our Textbook Companion Internship was offered online during the outburst of pandemic (COVID-19).The main objectives of this internship is to provide an integrated learning experience, i.e., integration of theoretical knowledge and software tools (Simulation based study) i.e. essential to bridge academic-industry gaps. The objective is achieved by modifying the assigned tasks to interns on daily basis and evaluating their work and by giving feedback. This has helped the interns to understand the theoretical concepts together with simulations. Keywords— Outcome Based Approach; assessment tools; textbook companion; internship.

ABSTRACTFlexible vocal production control enables sound communication in both favorable and unfavorable conditions. The Lombard effect, which describes a rise in call amplitude with increasing ambient noise, is a widely exploited strategy by vertebrates to cope with interfering noise. In humans, the Lombard effect influences the lexical stress through differential amplitude modulation at a sub-call syllable level, which so far has not been documented in animals. Here, we bridge this knowledge gap with two species of Hipposideros bats, which produce echolocation calls consisting of two functionally well-defined units: the constant-frequency (CF) and frequency-modulated (FM) components. We show that ambient noise induced a strong, but differential, Lombard effect in the CF and FM components of the echolocation calls. We further report that the differential amplitude compensation occurred only in the spectrally overlapping noise conditions, suggesting a functional role in releasing masking. Lastly, we show that both species of bats exhibited a robust Lombard effect in the spectrally non-overlapping noise conditions, which contrasts sharply with the existing evidence. Our data highlight echolocating bats as a potential mammalian model for understanding vocal production control.

In today’s globalised business world, effective communication and collaboration across cultures are crucial for success. Cultural competence, the ability to understand and navigate cultural differences, plays a vital role in achieving this. However, traditional language learning approaches often fail to adequately prepare learners for the cultural challenges they will face in professional contexts. English for Specific Purposes ‘ESP’ teaching, on the other hand, is well-suited to address this gap by integrating cultural content and skills into language teaching. This paper will explore the importance of cultural competence in Business English and discuss how ESP teaching can bridge the gap between traditional language learning and the needs of the business world. Precisely, the paper will aim to define cultural competence and its importance for Business English learners. It will also outline the challenges and opportunities for integrating cultural content and skills into ESP teaching. Additionally, it will answer the following question: How can ESP practitioners design and implement practical learning tasks to promote cultural competence in their students? The paper will conclude with a summary of the key findings and recommendations for ESP practitioners and syllabus designers.

The article aims to reveal the changes in studies of Russian literature in Russia and the United Kingdom in the last three decades. The authors use the concept of the Russian literary canon to highlight the differences in the content and focus of the study of Russian literature. The empirical base of the research is Russian official documents, school textbooks, syllabi of university courses in Russian literature, and the collections of university libraries in the UK. Russian literary canon has changed to bridge the ideological break in Russian literature of the twentieth century. In Russia, the main channel for transmitting the canon is school education. The study of literature is supposed to ensure the formation of national identity, patriotism, humanistic values, and understanding of the exclusivity of Russian literature. The national canon understood as “compulsory reading”, performs socializing, educational, and stabilizing functions. The study of Russian literature in the UK began in the late 19th century at universities, where course content reflected the changing political context. Library collections and university curricula demonstrate the wide range of authors and research topics studied. The study of Russian literature in the UK could not be defined through the Russian literature canon as there is no mandatory reading, and it is studied mainly in translation. Thus, there is no connection between language and literature. The stable interest in the UK towards Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries confirms that it belongs to the world’s cultural heritage beyond national borders.

Abstract— Student Professional Development is defined as the activities that enable to supplement and complement the curricular or main syllabi activities. These are the very important part and parcel of educational institutions to develop the students‟ personality as well as to strengthen the classroom learning directly or indirectly. Professional development (PD) can be defined in diverse ways and can take many forms. Formal education is classroom education, with nonformal considered as “any organized, systematic, educational activity, carried on outside the framework of the formal system, to provide selected types of learning to a particular subgroup in the population. A problem higher education faculty face is the lack of a framework for holistic student professional development and assessment. Such a framework can serve as a bridge between academic and professional identity development This article presents the framework planned in the institute for professional development of students where the students learn by Informal education by association and affiliation, specifically, “the life-long process by which every person acquires and accumulates knowledge, skills, attitudes, and insights from daily experiences and exposure to the environment. The idea is to facilitate an academic mixed with co-curricular and extra co-curricular culture so that they can participate as effectively . Our mixed-methods study examined the impact of many activities leadership, classroom experiences, and sociocultural levels; the findings inspire new directions for program design with key insights for student PD program evaluation. The knowledge of the English language is fundamental for the application of evidence-based practice. Hence, this study explores, through an online survey, the (1) perceived and (2) actual level of Scientific English among Italian undergraduate (UGs) and postgraduate (PGs) physiotherapists. As for (1), the participants expressed their agreement with 10 statements regarding the attitude towards Scientific English through a 1–4 Likert-type scale, with consensus set at ≥70%. As for (2), an ad-hoc 10-point questionnaire was developed through a Delphi procedure, with a pass score set at ≥60%. The survey was completed by 421 participants (UG: 47%; PG: 53%). As for (1), consensus was achieved in both groups in 4 out of 10 statements, specifically the ones addressing the capability to fully understand a scientific paper and physiotherapy-specific language in English. As for (2), the mean score reached by both groups was below 60%. The participants who had studied or were studying at a university in southern Italy presented 2.56 [1.54; 4.24] times higher odds to fail the test. New strategies to bridge the gap in the knowledge of Scientific English in Italy should be developed, through the creation of a unique syllabus tailored to the needs of future physiotherapists.

Studies on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) have been increasingly conducted in recent years, especially concerning the contributions of the so called task-based approach, which has been gradually undergone some adaptations, becoming a driving force for syllabus design. Within the field of Didactics of Translation (DT) the use of tasks has also, so far, proven to be an appropriate approach in the teaching and learning of translation. Therefore, in this article, I will discuss the differences regarding the rationale behind the definition of task as well as its application both in the SLA and in the DT environments. The method seeks to justify the choice of the discussed concepts, and presents the steps in the development a translation task here proposed. The discussion is grounded on this example of translation task and examines how the notion of task in SLA interfaces with the acquisition of translation competence in DT. The conclusion shows that SLA can inspire and contribute to DT concerning the task-based approach. Some of these contributions here discussed are authenticity, focus on meaning and on form, and planning. Furthermore, such contributions are applied in the development of a translation task, as a means of exemplification, and building a bridge between the areas of SLA and the DT.

Abstract— Higher educational institutions and Universities are facing challenges to produce skilled graduates capable of addressing anticipated industry needs. This is due to implementation of traditional curricula and adoption of teacher centric approach. Eventually, traditional curriculum creates a significant gap between the skills acquired by students through education and the skills needed at the workplace. To bridge the gap, national and international accreditation bodies are enforcing educational institutions to implement Outcome Based Education (OBE) in their educational processes. The OBE is a student-centric teaching and learning approach that focuses on skills anticipated by the industries. The implementation OBE in engineering education is driven by design and implementation OBE curriculum. In this context, the current article presents a systematic framework for designing, developing, and implementing outcome-based curriculum for engineering education. The framework comprises of six phases including identification of a new program, formulation of mission, vision, and educational objectives for the identified program, curriculum development, the procedure to outline course syllabus, and finally, implementation of developed curriculum. industry needs at the time of their graduation. Thus, the proposed framework aids institutions in designing, developing, and implementing OBE curriculum, leading to cater industry needs. In the teaching and learning process must be accompanied by learning methods that can attract students so that enthusiasm in participating in learning, the activities chosen must be able to bridge between the knowledge that has been owned by students with new knowledge that will be received by students, especially to develop skills in incorrect language skills only reading skills of students. The bridging things are required to be able to process students' knowledge by seeing the models around them, one of which is by seeing the instructor himself. As a student who always pays attention to the movements of the instructor when teaching. The slightest thing done by the teacher will always be considered even imitated by his students. That is what makes students get lessons from how to pay attention to a model, just like the theory that was expressed by Albert Bandura who is a psychologist who emphasizes the importance of students in processing knowledge from observing the model around. The research method used is a qualitative method with a case study approach that focuses on one particular object to be studied in-depth to be able to uncover the reality behind the phenomenon. So that the data collection techniques, researchers use observation, interviews, and documentation. While data analysis techniques are via descriptive data analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data exposure, and conclusion drawing. The results obtained in this study are a combined method used in Attaufiq Salafiyah Islamic boarding school which combines the harfiyyah, soutiyyah, syllable, syllable, word method, and sentence method methods. The learning process uses four stages by following the four elements of Albert Bandura's social theory, namely the stage of attention when the teacher starts the lesson with greetings and questions students, the second stage is the stage of remembrance when associating new information with old information and expanding and detailing the material, the stage the third is the imitation stage when oral practice and giving homework to students, and the last is the motivation stage by giving praise to students to be more enthusiastic in learning.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a rare neurological disorder that impairs phonatory function by triggering involuntary and intermittent contractions of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. SD is classified into three types: adductor SD (AdSD), abductor SD (AbSD), and mixed SD. Of these, AdSD accounts for 90–95% of disease; younger females are predominantly affected. Botulinum toxin injection into the laryngeal muscles is safe, minimally invasive, and very effective. Here, we review the history of clinical research for SD conducted in Japan. The first use of botulinum toxin injection therapy to treat SD in Japan was by Kobayashi et al. in 1989. The group developed an objective mora (syllable) method to evaluate SD severity. Recently, we conducted a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial of botulinum toxin therapy for AdSD and an open-label trial for AbSD to obtain the approval of such therapy by the Japanese medical insurance system. The mora method revealed significant voice improvement and the evidence was of high quality. Additionally, a clinical trial of type 2 thyroplasty using titanium bridges confirmed the efficacy and safety of such therapy. These studies broadened the SD treatment options and have significantly benefited patients.

English for specific purposes is a field of teaching and learning that focuses on English language skills in context. It bridges the gap between general language knowledge and specific communication skills to enable students to meet the demands of their future professional field. For instance, aviation maintenance engineering requires the knowledge of highly specialized terminology. By providing appropriate and relevant linguistic tools, ESP enables aviation students to successfully perform job-related tasks and become more professionally competent within the aviation industry. While ESP has a role in improving language learning, the student’s experience can be further enhanced by incorporating Project-Based Learning into the curriculum to make learning more meaningful through inquiry-driven, task-based, and problem-solving paradigms. One key advantage of ESP in this regard is its adaptability, which means it can be adapted into a functional course. According to Dudley-Evans and St Johns (1998): “ESP was, for example, very influential in showing how a communicative language curriculum could be turned into either a functional-notional syllabus or a task-based syllabus” (Dudley-Evans & St Johns, 1998). The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a PBL method used in an ESP class aimed at aircraft maintenance engineers. The project involves students assembling a model aircraft jet engine. The goal of the project is to help students develop adequate knowledge about aircraft jet engines by acquainting them with the names and functions of the engine’s parts and also teaching them about its complex operation. Moreover, the project trains students on how to log their in-class activities into a weekly log that tracks their progress. At the end of the project, students reflect on their experience by completing a questionnaire that evaluates the outcomes of their learning. This helps the instructor assess the effectiveness of the project on the student’s language learning.

The paper takes into consideration the Hindi textbooks of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT, set-up in 1961 and fully funded by the Central Government) for sixth to twelfth grade students (11/12 to 17/18 years of age) published in the 2000s. In accordance with the NCERT’s aim of seeking qualitative improvements in school education, these new generation textbooks are framed so as to bridge the gap between education and life. The literary texts of the collections – prose works, poetry, drama, songs, all introduced (with the exception of the syllabus for class 6) by a critical note – differ as to the subject matter. Some of them are clearly intended to fight discrimination of every kind, be it against low caste people, women, or minorities, while others deal with the problem of discrimination in indirect, and even subliminal ways. In both cases, however, the critical introduction to each text and the associated exercises are meant to serve as a stimulus for reflexion and discussion. The paper focuses on woman as the main issue arising in the 15 analysed textbooks. The paper is subdivided into to parts. The first part deals with the textbooks for classes 6 to 10, the second part analyses the textbooks for classes 11 and 12. The dividing line is marked by the two examinations in the secondary education system, namely, the All India Secondary School Examination (class 10), and the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (class 12).

IntroductionAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the critical medical issues of the 21st century. Medical professionals are the primary prescribers of antimicrobials; their undergraduate education of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is considered one of the fundamental approaches in combating the issue of AMR. This education level provides a platform to bridge any gaps in their knowledge and competency in AMS. This study aims to develop an educational resource on microbes, hygiene and prudent antimicrobial use for the undergraduate medical programme. The guideline produced will then be assimilated into the existing curriculum which will help to improve the quality of education which in turn will improve rationale as the use of antimicrobials in the future. Methods and analysisA three-step approach consensus approach will be adopted for this study for the development of a validated medical curriculum guideline on AMR. A preliminary curriculum for the programme will be drafted from reviews of published literature including syllabi as well as national and international guidelines. Introduction. This paper reports the results of a study concerning the views and the expectations of primary teachers for the transition from kindergarten to primary school. Goal. In a recently new educational environment, in which all educators “forced” to continue their educational practices as to ensure for their students a smooth transition from one level to another, two transitions processes implemented. The first one concerns the move from in-person to virtual delivery of the language classroom and the second one concern the preschoolers’ transition from kindergarten to primary school. Methods of the Research. In this context, 16 Greek first grade primary school teachers' views about their (previous preschoolers) students' literacy development and elements of literacy knowledge after remote teaching (in a preschool setting) were collected with semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The Results. The results showed that support for the transition of young children from preschool to primary school settings and literacy development was inevitably affected into this new educational environment. Therefore, teachers propose the continuity between early childhood and primary school literacy programmes as the key for a smoother transition. Based on evaluations of experiences, a smooth transition and continuity from one level to another could be also facilitated and intermediated by collaboration of preschool and primary school teachers and other stakeholders. Furthermore, discontinuities in early childhood literacy education and development could be disappeared if policy makers try to bridge and sculpt “distances” via effective transition programmes. Conclusions. The knowledge of current practice, priorities, challenges, and opportunities will help language educators to adjust their education offer, their syllabi, expectations, or pedagogical approaches to facilitate a more positive and smooth transition process for each and every learner.

Writing skill is a product of ingenuity carved through knowledge, learning, creativity and intellectual uprightness. An individual with sound writing skills is regarded high in dignity and receives elevated opportunities everywhere in competitive examinations, job opportunities, promotions and social services. Regarding the discipline of teaching and learning a language, proficiency in writing skill deserves an irrelative significance. In spite of being an unsurmountably significant skill, numerous learners and pedagogues still seem to be bewildering for specifying the actual crux of theoretical knowledge and pedagogical procedures of writing in a compact document. In order to bridge up this goal, this study attempts to open some pertinent horizons in terms of its objectives, approaches, types, components and cannons for evaluation through document analysis method, a major component of qualitative research design. Fairly a large number of document based views, ideas, opinions, definitions, approaches and guidelines have been analyzed critically. Obviously, the resources covered in the review, results and discussion section would prove to be reliable sources for the prospective learners and researchers. The study concludes that the teachers and syllabus designers have to keep themselves up-to-date with process based current approaches, methods and techniques alongside their theoretical and practical foundations. The most noteworthy insight drawn is that there are not any specific methods and techniques comprehensive enough to capture all the facets of teaching writing skill. Therefore, the teacher has to select and implement the best ones from a wide range of methods and techniques eclectically by musing on the classroom stakeholders deeply.

Education is a pillar of the establishment of a nation and state. Education is a bridge for humans to avoid oppression, ignorance and backwardness. Educators are required to be able to guide, direct and educate students to be smart in science and good in morals. Morality is very important in social life, especially for children at junior high school age. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Educators have roles as organizers and initiators in charge of compiling and designing syllabus and lesson plans that will be used in the teaching and learning process later. In the RPP there is already a learning plan that will be carried out in the form of preliminary activities, core activities and closing activities using the inquiry learning learning model. In addition, there is punishment through an inner approach in the form of dhikr, istighfar as well as reciting the Koran and rewards in the form of giving stars that will affect grades, pocket money and motivational writing in notebooks. There are three elements that form the role of social studies educators, namely knowing goodness, loving kindness and doing good. The inhibiting factors come from the students themselves, family, school environment factors, association and technology. While the supporting factors that really help educators in improving the morals of students' manners after online learning come from the character traits possessed by students, families who have formed personalities from an early age as well as motivation and encouragement from educators.

We assembled this cluster of essays to bring to the diverse audience of pmla some of the insights, methodologies, and models for rethinking narrative, public engagement, and environmentality that the ecological digital humanities (EcoDH) offer. We are founding members of the new MLA forum TC Ecocriticism and Environmental Humanities, a collective whose existence and vigor derive from the community that social media (at their best) foster. With its syllabus exchange and participant-directed conversations, the forum's MLA Commons site owes much to the digital humanities principles of outreach, access, and inclusion. Although this electronic space is a work in progress, MLA members are using it to share pedagogical materials and research and to conduct lively discussions that push beyond the comfort zones of time period and disciplinary training. Teaching and scholarship have also been greatly enhanced by interdisciplinary networks that bridge unnecessary divides between the academy, activists, and a capaciously imagined public. Yet from the start we knew that we could not hope to be comprehensive in what we offer here. Vast and flourishing, the ecological digital humanities originate in work that spans decades. In their instantiations and concerns, they are also radically new, and the summoning of these essays marks an early attempt to establish a “futural archive,” to use a term of one of our contributors. We present in what follows snapshots of the approach's energy and emphases, a glimpse of achievements as well as intimations of possible futures. We bring together work by academics early in their careers with projects by foundational practitioners, scholars who have caused the ecological digital humanities to thrive.

Background: Teacher education programs (TEPs) have a mandate to prepare teachers qualified to educate culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. In addition, the demographic imperative compels TEPs to recruit preservice teachers from underrepresented communities; yet, just as youth of color are marginalized in schools, so too are teacher candidates of color (TCCs) marginalized in TEPs. Just as conventional TEP curriculums fail to decenter dominant social groups, so too do many teacher educators fail to enact asset-based pedagogy. A teacher quality gap and culturally rooted disenfranchisement persist. Purpose: I examine how TCCs are prepared to teach critically in demographically pluralistic schools and how one teacher educator of color attempts to close the teacher quality gap with a diverse preservice teacher cohort through the application of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP). Although asset pedagogies are widely accepted as best practice in P–12 classrooms, there exists a dearth of research on their impact on postsecondary spaces. Moreover, multicultural education scholarship focused on the experiences of TCCs is limited. Research Design: Drawing from a larger critical ethnographic study of two diversity courses in an urban TEP, this article explicates one teacher educator’s application of CRP. I utilize the core tenets of CRP—academic achievement, cultural competence, and sociopolitical consciousness—to bridge the gap between theory and practice through illustrations of intentional critical pedagogy. Data were analyzed from field notes, interviews of students and faculty, course assignments, readings, syllabi, evaluations, and other relevant artifacts. Results: Findings indicate that modeling CRP is paramount to developing culturally relevant pedagogues and that making known the interdependence of CRP’s three fundamental pillars is central to transformative learning experiences for preservice teachers. Although challenging, CRP at the postsecondary level is an achievable endeavor that requires increased faculty innovation, reflexivity, and humility. Conclusion: The project offers practical applications of CRP that are adaptable to most teacher preparation courses. Recommendations include a call for more studies that examine the use of asset-based pedagogies in higher education, especially in TEPs.

The current study investigates the Effect of Task Complexity and Gender Differences on EFL Learners’ Writing Performance. Task complexity is the inherent cognitive demands of the tasks imposed on the learners by the structure of the tasks. It is investigated along the resource-dispersing variables of pre-task planning time, post-task editing time and prior knowledge. This study also tries to intertwine the concepts of task complexity and sociolinguistics (i.e., gender differences). The participants are 160 high school students (80 males and 80 females) studying at international schools in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia. The writing topics were selected among the essay prompts similar to those of the IELTS test using the cause-and-effect essay task type. A series of T-Test and one-way ANOVAs were used for detecting the significant differences within the same gender and across genders, Cronbach's alpha (α) for the task reliability, Wilk’s Lambda for variable contributions, Partial Eta squared (ηp2) for the effect size, and the Observed Power (or post-hoc power) for the test statistical power. This study is thought to be laden with manifold implications for varied stakeholders within the realm of didactics, including language teachers, learners, syllabus designers, test developers, educational bodies and many other individuals in the ministries of education and higher education. Should this be done, it can contribute to improving EFL undergraduate students’ ability to a level of writing production that is more likely to be satisfactory. The current study found different effects of task complexity on EFL learners’ writing performance across gender. There were both similar and different impacts on CAF metrics between the writing tasks across genders. The results indicate a partial support to the predictions of Skehan and Foster (2001) and those of Robinson (2005) where there is a partial increase in the CAF scores along the resource-dispersing variables. Conversely, findings show no support to the Gender Similarities Hypothesis (GSH) by J. S. Hyde (2005). This study also explored the effect percentage of task complexity along the resource dispersing variables planning time, editing time and prior knowledge on CAF. Besides, the researcher sorted the significant CAF metrics within same gender and across genders according to their occurrence and percentage in the performance of the current student participants. It is recommended that pedagogical tasks should be sequenced for learners on the basis of increasing in their cognitive complexity to help promote learners' performance in terms of accuracy, fluency, and complexity. In addition, educators should motivate male students to engage more and perform better in the writing classes; syllabus designers should introduce new teaching methodologies that help bridge the gap in gender differences between boys and girls.

Abstract— Technological enhanced teaching through learning management systems (LMS) have become a potential interface for handling course registration, assigning students, their subject group, managing course contents and assessing students. Many Higher Educational Institutions across the country are still dependent on classroom teaching for covering the syllabus. A lot of effort is put in by the faculties to handle/manage, save and reuse the study material for repeating the topics of a particular course in next semester. This system bridges the gap between the student and the teacher to interact outside the classrooms as well. The efficient use of ICT in education is in high demands now to improve the quality of education in higher educational institutions. Thus, LMS serves to be one of the useful technological tools for the engineering graduates. Implementing different learning techniques, pedagogy and assessments strategies could be very challenging. More opportunities are provided to the teachers and the students to learn or assess their work through LMS. This study gives an overview about the use of innovative teaching, learning and evaluation techniques applied for the first year engineering undergraduate learners that can be adapted in an online or hybrid mode for understanding. With this intention, we have used customized Moodle based LMS for our engineering institution. LMS portal helps the faculties to upload the course contents, youtube video links, e-books, quizzes and assignments, which is accessible to the students anytime throughout their semester from anywhere. After various activities performed through LMS, it is observed that LMS helps in strengthening the learning process and motivates them thus showing a positive impact on achievement. 10519 Background: Advances in early detection, therapeutics, and an aging population are expected to lead to an increase in the number of cancer survivors in the United States to 20 million by year 2026. The Institute of Medicine and Commission on Cancer recommends delivery of survivorship care plans on completion of curative treatment. While models exist for high-quality survivorship care, institutions encounter barriers such as lack of resources and limited training in survivorship. Our institution piloted a unique model combining fellows’ education with guideline-driven recommendations from a multidisciplinary team to provide consolidated survivorship care. Methods: A survey for self-reported competence and experience was conducted amongst the hematology and oncology fellows at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. A bimonthly clinic staffed by a medical oncologist, oncology fellow and a cancer rehabilitation fellow was initiated in September 2018. Didactic lectures, curriculum syllabus and recommended assessments were established. Screening tools for distress, patients’ confidence in knowledge about survivorship and physical function via PROMIS 20a were administered; clinical assessments including the “6-minute walk test” were used to assess cardiovascular health. Results: Most fellows had not encountered a survivor of lung (16%), GU (0%) and head and neck cancer (33%). Majority of the fellows had never delivered a survivorship care plan. Scores were low in competence and experience in survivorship. By December 2018, 15 patients with 17 diagnoses of cancer were referred to the clinic. 10 were survivors of hematologic malignancies while 7 were of solid tumors. The no-show rate was 40%. Fellows conducted the assessments and were supervised by an oncology attending. Of the 9 patients seen, 4 were referred for physical therapy; additional referrals for psychology and cardiology were frequent. Conclusions: A comprehensive multidisciplinary survivorship clinic focusing on fellows’ education is a feasible model for delivery of survivorship care and aims to bridge the gap in experience and competence of fellows. Future goals include re-assessment of patient-reported outcomes, physical function, and competence of fellows.

Lexical Forms of Song’s Incipits in Belarusian Wedding Cycle: Semantics, Structural Transformations (an Example of One Type of Texts) In the context of the study on dynamic typology and dialectal features of Belarusian folk songs, the paradigm of texts relating to the episode when the Bride parts with her parents is considered here. Such texts have the same lexical and poetic basis; are characterized by common type of incipit in different variants. All of these texts depict an dramatic for the Bride moment of “intrusion” into her backyard “an alien” family – the Groom’s family. Different versions of this incipit have been noticed within the large territory of Belarus and on the frontier (Latvia, Poland). Structural transformations of this type of incipits are manifested by reduction or, quite the opposite, by adding (affixation) syllables in verses. It is conditioned by non-verbal semantics expressed through vocalic rhythmic – the superiority of recitation elements or motor and somatic dynamics. Expansion of an incipit verses by adding to the initial word its rhymed synonym is also a typical phenomena.Diachrony of a given paradigm texts is also revealed by comparing the texts related thematically to the wedding moment mentioned above. A large number of these texts are abridged versions (a middle and a final part) of full texts of paradigm in question. A song in the abbreviated version begins with the culminative part and omits the metaphorical and descriptive initial part (such transformations can be observed in the periphery districts of a radical area). Accordingly, in such a case a different stanza fulfills the incipit function. The method of dynamic typology is applied while analyzing various texts that belong strictly to the same syllabic and rhythmic paradigm. It is a promising approach to study on linguo-musical dialects and diachronic changes in folk song language. Metodę dynamicznej typologii pieśni stosujemy do opisu tekstów różnych gatunków, o różnej tematyce, jednak należących ściśle do tego samego paradygmatu sylabo-rytmicznego. Otwiera to nowe perspektywy w badaniach dialektów lingwo-muzycznych oraz zmian diachronicznych w języku pieśni ludowej.

Recent work has implicated low-frequency (<20 Hz) neuronal phase information as important for both auditory (<10 Hz) and speech [theta (∼4–8 Hz)] perception. Activity on the timescale of theta corresponds linguistically to the average length of a syllable, suggesting that information within this range has consequences for segmentation of meaningful units of speech. Longer timescales that correspond to lower frequencies [delta (1–3 Hz)] also reflect important linguistic features—prosodic/suprasegmental—but it is unknown whether the patterns of activity in this range are similar to theta. We investigate low-frequency activity with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and mutual information (MI), an analysis that has not yet been applied to noninvasive electrophysiological recordings. We find that during speech perception each frequency subband examined [delta (1–3 Hz), thetalow (3–5 Hz), thetahigh (5–7 Hz)] processes independent information from the speech stream. This contrasts with hypotheses that either delta and theta reflect their corresponding linguistic levels of analysis or each band is part of a single holistic onset response that tracks global acoustic transitions in the speech stream. Single-trial template-based classifier results further validate this finding: information from each subband can be used to classify individual sentences, and classifier results that utilize the combination of frequency bands provide better results than single bands alone. Our results suggest that during speech perception low-frequency phase of the MEG signal corresponds to neither abstract linguistic units nor holistic evoked potentials but rather tracks different aspects of the input signal. This study also validates a new method of analysis for noninvasive electrophysiological recordings that can be used to formally characterize information content of neural responses and interactions between these responses. Furthermore, it bridges results from different levels of neurophysiological study: small-scale multiunit recordings and local field potentials and macroscopic magneto/electrophysiological noninvasive recordings.
