Firefighters' fluid balance was measured while they attempted to suppress well-developed experimental bushfires of intensities commonly faced by hand-tool crews, and also while they built fireline in the same way without fire, during three summers in Australian eucalypt forests. They consistently sweated at rates of 1-2 kg h-1 while building fireline and at half these rates for the whole work day. Drinking and dehydration were proportional to sweat loss: on average firefighters replaced 43% of their sweat loss during fireline construction and 63% for the whole work day. During fireline construction they dehydrated at an average rate of 654 g (0.9% body mass) per hour and a maximum rate of 2 kg per hour (2.6% body mass). The scientific observers sweated less than half as much as the firefighters but also drank less and became almost as dehydrated. These findings emphasise the need for work practices that guarantee an adequate water intake before, during, and after firefighting. Regression equations are presented for predicting sweat rate (hence water requirements) from activity, fire, body mass, and air temperature.

He needed to think carefully about how these would impact the design and implementation of an effective salesforce reward system.

Syringomas are benign skin tumors of the eccrine sweat glands. The chief affected areas are lower eyelids and malar areas, however, vulvar syringoma is a relatively rare. The lesions are small, multiple, firm, yellowish colored papules and microscopically, have dilated cystic sweat ducts which have comma Iike tails resembling tadpoles. The majority of patients with vulvar syringomas are asymptomatic but sometimes associated with pruritic symptom. We repart a case of vulvar syringoma in a 55-year-old woman who presented with a intermittent pruritus with a brief review of literatures.

Humans, like other animals, have an excellent sense of smell that can serve social communication. Although ample research has shown that body odours can convey transient emotions like fear, these studies have exclusively treated emotions as categorical , neglecting the question whether emotion quantity can be expressed chemically. Using a unique combination of methods and techniques, we explored a dose–response function: Can experienced fear intensity be encoded in fear sweat? Specifically, fear experience was quantified using multivariate pattern classification (combining physiological data and subjective feelings with partial least-squares-discriminant analysis), whereas a photo-ionization detector quantified volatile molecules in sweat. Thirty-six male participants donated sweat while watching scary film clips and control (calming) film clips. Both traditional univariate and novel multivariate analysis (100% classification accuracy; Q 2 : 0.76; R 2 : 0.79) underlined effective fear induction. Using their regression-weighted scores, participants were assigned significantly above chance (83% > 33%) to fear intensity categories (low–medium–high). Notably, the high fear group ( n = 12) produced higher doses of armpit sweat, and greater doses of fear sweat emitted more volatile molecules ( n = 3). This study brings new evidence to show that fear intensity is encoded in sweat (dose–response function), opening a field that examines intensity coding and decoding of other chemically communicable states/traits. The responses of four crews of 7-8 men were measured while they attempted to suppress well-developed experimental bushfires of intensities commonly faced by hand-tool crews, and also while they built fireline in the same way without fire, during three summers in dry eucalypt forests of SW and SE Australia. Average values were sweat rate 1,144 g h-1, heart rate (HR) 152 beats min-1, and rectal temperature (Tre) 38.2° C. Changes in the average temperatures of clothed and unclothed skin were negligible, indicating efficient evaporation of sweat. Firefighters considered the work 'somewhat hard', and felt 'just too warm' and 'wet' with sweat. By contrast, the responses of the scientific observers, doing less strenuous work in the same environment, were minimal: sweat rate 292 g h-1, HR 80 beats min-1, and Tre 37.6°C. Firefighters' responses were mainly due to exertion rather than fire, confirming an identical finding from measurements of their energy expenditure and thermal environment. Differences between attacks with and without fire were small in both groups (HR 8-9 beats min-1, Tre 0.1-0.2 degrees C) except for sweat rate (firefighters 401 g h-1, observers 181 g h-1), and were usually present before the attacks began. All responses were highly consistent over the four crews, three summers, and two regions. The above findings show that the firefighters worked within their capacity and paced themselves to sustain their own preferred equilibrium levels of strain. They also demonstrate the effectiveness of the firefighters' clothing and work practices.

The anti-sweatshop movement burst in the American public's consciousness in the 1990s. By the late 1990s, an eclectic group of 43 American NGOs and a growing number of international organizations were engaged in the movement. But, as yet, there are no rigorous empirical studies of the impact of anti-sweatshop actions on those firms accused of relying on sweated labor. This paper addresses this lacuna by using the event study technique to empirically assess the impact of public disclosure of firms' sweatshop practices on their stock prices. The paper finds that public disclosure does indeed cause firms' stock prices to fall, sometimes substantially. This, no doubt, explains the rush by these firms to voluntary codes of conduct. The paper also shows that stock prices have reacted positively (and substantially) to the actions taken by one firm, Reebok, to adopt anti-sweatshop practices. These findings appear to confirm the wisdom of the public disclosure strategies used by the movement to get firms to change behavior. But because of the potential for voluntary codes of conduct to result in opportunistic behavior, the paper concludes by arguing that public disclosure will only really work if carried out by independent third party auditors.

Skin-tribology is a new scientific domain where the living human skin, lubricated by sweat, cooperates duringthe motion with the non-living surface of clothing material. Such cooperation has an important influence onthe human limbs’ functioning and, consequently, on the bio-frictions and wear effects connected with humanhealth and efficiency. This paper presents new research tendencies and their applications in the contemporaryskin-tribology domain. At first, we described and documented skin-tribology connections between variousscientific domains. In a particular case, some new phenomena are illustrated occurring during the human skinbody lubrication by sweat. For example, sweat properties are considered during the flow inside a thin gapbetween tightly fitting clothing material surfaces and the skin of the human body.This paper presents the meaning and influence of many components in human sweat on dynamic sweatviscosity, health and efficiency.The main results focus on the influence of the non-Newtonian sweat features on the dynamic sweat viscosityvariations across the film thickness in the thin sweat layer and on the load carrying capacity of human limbsand the human Basal Metabolic Rate with Metabolic Age.

Light, heavy, and encapsulating clothing were compared in a climatic chamber during 60 minutes of moderate exercise (energy expenditure 382-464 W) in warm, dry conditions with no added radiant heat (air and mean radiant temperature 30°C, relative humidity 33 %, air velocity 0.5 m s-1). The results showed that high insulation and reduced ventilation restricted the evaporation of sweat and thus hindered the dissipation of metabolic heat. These adverse effects were apparent in (1) a reduced cooling efficiency of sweat and hence a higher sweat rate; (2) increased heat storage, cardiovascular strain, discomfort, and fatigue; and (3) a failure to attain thermal equilibrium even after 60 minutes of work. Comparison with the effects of fire, previously reported, on lightly dressed firefighters showed that the above penalties would outweigh any benefit that extra insulation or encapsulation could confer during wildland fire suppression with hand tools.

Since acetylcholine is the main neurotransmitter of eccrine sweating, phosphatidylcholine ingestion might increase sweating. In 10 adults mid-palmar sweating was measured 12 hours after ingestion of a high and a low phosphatidylcholine supper. In a double blind, crossover study, mid-palmar sweating was measured in 11 consenting adults 12 hours after a low phosphatidylcholine supper taken with either lecithin or placebo. Five minutes after cleaning the palm and drying, sweat was captured in a quick-drying plastic film. The film was removed with cellophane tape and placed on a glass slide. Mean "droplet" diameter was measured by averaging the greatest diameter of 25 "droplets." Ten of 10 subjects (100%) produced more sweat with a high phosphatidylcholine meal than with a low one. Compared to placebo, 10 of 11 subjects (91%) given lecithin had significantly increased sweat secretion (p less than 0.01). It remains to be confirmed that this phosphatidylcholine-induced sweating increase is clinically significant.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a direct read-out of sweat-induced changes in the skin’s electrical conductance. Sympathetically-mediated pulsatile changes in skin sweat measured as EDA resemble an integrate-and-fire process, which yields an inverse Gaussian model as the inter-pulse interval distribution. We have previously showed that the inter-pulse intervals in EDA follow an inverse Gaussian distribution. However, the statistical structure of EDA pulse amplitudes has not yet been characterized based on the physiology. Expanding upon the integrate-and-fire nature of sweat glands, we hypothesized that the amplitude of an EDA pulse is proportional to the excess volume of sweat produced compared to what is required to just reach the surface of the skin. We modeled this as the difference of two inverse Gaussian models for each pulse, one which represents the time required to produce just enough sweat to rise to the surface of the skin and one which represents the time requires to produce the actual volume of sweat. We proposed and tested a series of four simplifications of our hypothesis, ranging from a single difference of inverse Gaussians to a single simple inverse Gaussian. We also tested four additional models for comparison, including the lognormal and gamma distributions. All models were tested on EDA data from two subject cohorts, 11 healthy volunteers during 1 hour of quiet wakefulness and a different set of 11 healthy volunteers during approximately 3 hours of controlled propofol sedation. All four models which represent simplifications of our hypothesis outperformed other models across all 22 subjects, as measured by Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC), as well as mean and maximum distance from the diagonal on a quantile-quantile plot. Our broader model set of four simplifications offered a useful framework to enhance further statistical descriptions of EDA pulse amplitudes. Some of the simplifications prioritize fit near the mode of the distribution, while others prioritize fit near the tail. With this new insight, we can summarize the physiologically-relevant amplitude information in EDA with at most four parameters. Our findings establish that physiologically based probability models provide parsimonious and accurate description of temporal and amplitude characteristics in EDA.

In general, fried rice is a dish that is popular with the public, conventionally prepared using a set of conventional equipment with problems: (1) its operation requires a lot of physical effort, is tiring and sweaty, not intensive, (2) the equipment is relatively unhygienic, the quality of the results is less stable. The SEGORO fried rice-making machine is the solution to this problem. The SEGORO fried rice unit consists of: a set of heaters with gas energy, equipped with an electric fire starter, a 12 Volt DC motor that drives the stirrer and rotates the Wok, equipped with a relevant wok, equipped with a gas handle valve. Analysis results: (1) one processing batch for 15-20 portions; (2) processing time from 12 minutes to 7 minutes, productivity increased up to 2x; (3) conventionally workers work tiringly and produce a lot of sweat. ‘SEGORO’ fried rice machine, equipped with an electric stirrer motor and Wok turning motor does not require high physical effort, and is not tiring. In conclusion, the Segoro fried rice machine uses little electricity, low voltage, saves gas and physical energy, its operation is driven by a stirrer motor, and is equipped with a wok turning motor whose speed can be adjusted. The Segoro fried rice machine is made from stainless steel 304, it is more hygienic and meets food-grade standards, and the quality of the processed product is more stable.

A 73-year-old woman was referred by her hematologist for cholestasis of unknown origin. She was recently diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia grade 0 in a context of fatigue, night sweats, weight loss and monocytosis. A PET-CT showed hepatosplenomegaly and multiple centimetric adenopathy. The diagnosis was confirmed by a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Interestingly, the evolution of the patient is marked by the appearance of cholestasis and an erythematous firm skin nodule of the right forearm. The skin lesion was biopsied to rule out a cutaneous localization of the patient’s known hemopathy.

Sweat is important in thermoregulation, helping to dissipate heat in the body by evaporation in hot conditions in dairy cows. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variation of sweat fatty acid compositions in summer conditions in Jersey and Holstein dairy cattle for their potential thermoregulatory roles in animal health protection. Temperature, relative humidity and Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) values were calculated for the intensity of stress in the indoor environment. The chemical compounds of sweat were determined by gas chromatography device and inter-breeds differences were revealed. As a result of analyzes, a total of 23 fatty acids were detected in both breeds. It was understood that there were 15 fatty acids in the Jersey breed. Palmitic acid was detected at a rate of 27.72 % in Holstein cows and 25.16 % in jersey cows that may be due to a higher rate of fatty acid release from muscle tissue, so that it may be less resistant than the jersey breed in heat stress conditions. It can be said that palmitic acid can be an indicator for heat stress conditions. ∑SFA and ∑PUFA contents of the sweat of Holstein cows were lower than those of Jersey breeds while ∑MUFA content was higher than those of Jersey breeds. The high expulsion of ∑SFA and ∑PUFA in the sweat of the Jersey cows can provide the function of delaying the body's dehydration by forming a hydrolipid film on the skin surface in hot conditions

Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a relatively rare benign skin disease characterized by the proliferation of eccrine sweat glands associated with capillary hemangioma and the proliferation of other skin elements such as adipose tissue, hair, and epidermis. The onset of the disease is usually at birth or in childhood and tends to occur in the extremities of females, but it occurred in an adult male in this case. The patient was a 72-year-old man with a 12 × 12 mm light brown, elastic, slightly firm skin nodule on the flexor aspect of his right forearm. A biopsy revealed enlargement of blood vessels, sweat glands, sweat ducts, and erector spongiosum with both lumen dilation and narrowing, leading to the diagnosis of EAH. The histopathological features of EAH include a marked proliferation of microvessels, epithelial-like changes in vascular endothelial cells (such as enlarged nuclei), and infiltration of inflammatory cells, mainly lymphocytes and plasma cells. In adult-onset cases, EAH can be clinically difficult to distinguish from epithelioid hemangioma (EH), which differs in the predominance of microvascular proliferation and the presence of eosinophils in the infiltrating inflammatory cells. It can also be distinguished from EAH by the negative results of S100 and anti-EMA in immunohistological staining. In the current cases, we were able to differentiate the two cases from characteristic findings on HE staining.

ABSTRACTEccrine Porocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm arising from sweat glands. It was first described by Pinkus and Mehregan as 'Epidermotropic eccrine carcinoma'. It may occur de novo or as a malignant transformation of an eccrine poroma. It is commonly found in older age group and in the lower extremities. Clinically, it may present as a verrucous plaque, polypoid growth or an ulcerative lesion of long duration. Local recurrence and metastasis to skin, lymphnodes, viscera, and bone may occur. Treatment is wide local excision. Metastatic lesions can be treated with chemotherapy.We report a case of eccrine porocarcinoma of the scalp in a 50 years old female who presented to us with a bosselated, firm, painless, non-tender, freely mobile swelling over left fronto-parietal region of 12 years duration. It was excised and histopathological diagnosis was Eccrine Porocarcinoma. In literature, scalp porocarcinoma is a very rare tumor.

This experimental study of fire-cracked rocks sought to determine if varied rock fracture attributes could be correlated with specific past uses of heated stones. A total of 864 rocks were heated in 41 fires that replicated hearth, stone boiling, sweat lodge, and earth oven uses of quartz, quartzite, and sandstone cobbles as heating elements. Analysis of experimental results considered three fire-cracked rock attributes (fracture rate, fragment type, and fragment shape) which can be correlated with some of the specific uses of rocks as heating elements. These attributes can be applied to fire-cracked rock assemblages from archaeological contexts to determine their past uses with relatively consistent results as long as the archaeological context of the fire-cracked rocks is carefully considered.

A 7-year-old male, Border Collie, developed a firm mass, measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter, in the left buccal skin. Histologically, the mass was composed of ductal structures lined by bilayered luminal epithelial and basaloid tumor cells along with a few nests of sebaceous cells. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that the luminal epithelial tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (CK, CAM5.2) and CK19 but not for CK14 or p63. In contrast, the basaloid tumor cells were positive for CK14, p63, andαSMA but not for CK19 or CAM5.2. CK8 expression was observed in both luminal epithelial and basaloid tumor cells. The tumor cells with sebaceous differentiation were positive for CK14 but not for the other markers. This is the first case of an apocrine sweat gland ductal adenoma with sebaceous differentiation occurring in the buccal skin of a dog.

This work describes a multisensing wearable platform for monitoring biomarkers in sweat during the practice of exercise. Five electrochemical sensors for pH, potassium, sodium, chloride, and lactate were implemented in a flexible patch approach, together with a paper microfluidic component, to continuously measure sweat composition. The sensors are fabricated with silicon technologies: ion selective field effect transistors (ISFETs) for pH and ionic species; and a gold thin-film microelectrode for lactate. The latter includes a polymeric membrane based on an electropolymerized polypyrroled structure, where all the biocomponents required for carrying out the lactate analyses are entrapped. The flexible patch is fabricated using hybrid integration technologies, including printed pads defined on a polyimide (Kapton®) substrate and wire bonding encapsulation of silicon chips. To fix and align the sensors to the flexible substrate, different laminated materials, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and silicone-based adhesive, were used. The first results show good performance of the sensors—ISFETS sensitivity between 54–59 mV dec−1 for ion ranges in sweat from 2 to 100 mM and lactate sensor sensitivity of −135 × 102 µA M−1 cm−2 for the range of 2–50 mM. The microfluidic platform has been tested in terms of adequate sensor wettability and rapid response during the time span of exercise activity (2 h) showing excellent results.

Eccrine poroma (EP) is a benign adnexal tumor arising from the terminal duct of the sweat gland. It represents 10% of all sweat gland tumors and is most commonly found on the sole or the side of the foot [1]. Herein, we report a case of EP on the right forearm in a child. A thirteen-year-old female with no past medical history presented with an asymptomatic nodule on the right forearm (Fig. 1). The nodule had gradually increased in size and was not associated with pain, pruritus, or bleeding from the lesion. A physical examination revealed a firm, mobile flesh-colored nodule on the right forearm 7 × 6 mm in size. A dermoscopic examination revealed chalice-like vessels, whitish-pink areas, and yellow structureless areas (Fig. 2). The nodule was completely excised and histopathological findings showed a tumor proliferation connecting to the epidermis, organized on thick, cellular cords and composed of small, cohesive, round cells forming homogeneous layers. These cellular cords were separated by fibrous interstitial tissue, not especially inflammatory, and traversed by regularly distributed capillaries (Figs. 3 and 4). Based on these histological findings, a diagnosis of EP was reached.

ABSTRACT The relationship between the metabolic, thermal load of exercise, sudomotor (sweat) response, and core temperature was examined in 20 individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and eight non-MS control subjects. Participants performed an incremental bicycle test of maximal aerobic power (VO2peak) fiom which 50% of VO2peak was calculated. A 50% VO2peak endurance test was performed while subject wore a full-body water garment. Initial circulating water temperature of 27°C was increased 2°C every three minutes to enhance the thermal load. Core, skin, and circulating water temperatures were monitored. Onset of sweating was measured at five sites. Results showed that 50% of the subjects with MS had an abnormally low sweat response in spite of relatively high skin temperatures (&gt; 35°C) at several sites. The thermal load (kJ/kg) of these subjects at test termination was 89% higher than that of the MS subjects with a normal sweat response. Clinicians should be aware that sweat response may be blunted or absent in many patients with MS. Guidance for ways to enhance heat dissipation under adverse climatic conditions or during activities that increase whole body metabolism should be provided to patients with MS. Perhaps of even greater importance was the finding that increased core and skin temperature during exercise did not result in the appearance of any MS-related symptom in 95% of our sample. Diabetes remains a great threat to human beings’ health and its world prevalence is projected to reach 9.9% by 2045. At present, the detection methods used are often invasive, cumbersome and time-consuming, thus increasing the burden on patients. In this paper, we propose a novel noninvasive and low-cost biosensor capable of detecting glucose in human sweat using enzyme-based electrodes for point-of-care uses. Specifically, an electrochemical method is applied for detection and the electrodes are covered with multilayered films including ferrocene-polyaniline (F-P), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and glucose oxidase (GOx) on Cu substrates (GOx/MWCNTs/F-P/Cu). The coated layers enhance the immobilization of GOx, increase the conductivity of the anode and improve the electrochemical properties of the electrode. Compared with the Cu electrode and the F-P/Cu electrode, a maximum peak current is obtained when the MWCNTs/F-P/Cu electrode is applied. We also study its current response by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at different concentrations (0–2.0 mM) of glucose solution. The best current response is obtained at 0.25 V using chronoamperometry. The effective working lifetime of an electrode is up to 8 days. Finally, to demonstrate the capability of the electrode, a portable, miniaturized and integrated detection device based on the GOx/MWCNTs/F-P/Cu electrode is developed. The results exhibit a short response time of 5 s and a correlation coefficient R2 of 0.9847 between the response current of sweat with blood glucose concentration. The LOD is of 0.081 mM and the reproducibility achieved in terms of RSD is 3.55%. The sweat glucose sensor is noninvasive and point-of-care, which shows great development potential in the health examination and monitoring field.

Four crews of male firefighters were studied while they attempted to suppress well-developed experimental bushfires of intensities commonly faced by hand-tool crews, and also while they built fireline in the same way without fire, during three summers in Australian eucalypt forests. Multiple-regression analyses of their responses showed that they maintained their deep body temperature and heart rate at constant and sustainable levels over a wide range of work duration and intensity, and of heat from weather and fire that frequently exceeded the limits recommended in current heat-stress guidelines. Energy expenditure declined slightly with warmer weather and fire although not with rake duration. Productivity was unchanged by warmer weather but declined slightly with rake duration and with fire. The findings confirm the effectiveness of the firefighters' work practices that allowed them to set their own pace, and of their light, well ventilated clothing that permitted unrestricted evaporation of sweat.

Purpose Design, fabricate and evaluate all-solid-state wearable sensor systems that can monitor ion concentrations in human sweat to provide real time health analysis and disease diagnosis capabilities. Design/methodology/approach A human health monitoring system includes disposable customized flexible electrode array and a compact signal transmission-processing electronic unit. Findings Patterned rGO (reduced-graphene oxide) layers can replace traditional metal electrodes for the fabrication of free-standing all solid film sensors to provide improved flexibility, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability in ion concentration monitoring. Electrochemical measurements show the open circuit potential of current selective electrodes exhibit near Nernst responses versus Na+ and K+ ion concentration in sweat. These signals show great stability during a typical measurement period of 3 weeks. Sensor performances evaluated through real time measurements on human subjects show strong correlations between subject activity and sweating levels, confirming high degree of robustness, sensitivity, reliability and practicality of current sensor systems. Originality/value In improving flexibility, stability and interfacial coherency of chemical sensor arrays, rGO films have been the developed as a high-performance alternative to conventional electrode with significant cost and processing complexity reduction. rGO supported solid state electrode arrays have been found to have linear potential response versus ion concentration, suitable for electrochemical sensing applications. Current sweat sensor system has a high degree of integration, including electrode arrays, signal processing circuits, and data visualization interfaces.

A 4-year-old native-breed cow had a mass with wide areas of ulceration and hemorrhage at the base of the tail at the same level as the vulva. The tumor was 19 X 13 X 11 cm, appeared red-brown, and was firm to hard, with gritty areas apparent on cut surface. Histologically, the tumor mass was composed of multilayered epithelial cells forming glandular structures with occasional apical blebs and rare solidly packed cells in nests. The stroma included fibrous connective tissue, scattered or periglandular sheets of spindle-shaped cells resembling myoepithelium, several cartilaginous formations, and numerous irregular islands of mineralized osteoid, well-formed bone trabeculae lined by osteoblasts, and many osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells among or near the neoplastic epithelium. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic epithelium was positive for pan-cytokeratin (AE1/AE2) and cytokeratin 19 but was negative for cytokeratin 18. Spindle-shaped cells were stained with alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA) and to a lesser extent vimentin antibodies. The cells of osteogenic lineage and spindle cells closely associated with the osteoid showed strong immunostaining for vimentin but not for αSMA. Immunostaining for neuron-specific enolase and S100 protein was not observed in any component of the tumor mass. These findings suggested that the origin of bone formation was undifferentiated mesenchymal cells with osteogenic potential.

Fox-Fordyce Disease (FFD) is a rare, chronic, pruritic, inflammatory disorder of apocrine glands. It is characterized by dome-shaped, firm, discrete, skin-colored, and monomorphic perifollicular papules. The most common sites of involvement are axillae and anogenital and periareolar regions which are rich in apocrine sweat glands. Treatment is difficult. Topical, intralesional steroids, topical tretinoin, adapalene, clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide, oral contraceptives, isotretinoin, phototherapy, electrocauterisation, excision-liposuction and curettage, and fractional carbon dioxide laser are among the treatment options. In the literature, there are articles reporting beneficial effects of pimecrolimus in FFD. Nevertheless, there have not been any reports about the use of tacrolimus in FFD. We report two patients diagnosed with FFD by clinical and histopathologic examination and discussed therapeutic effects of topical tacrolimus on FFD in the light of literature.

Herein, we investigate the potential application of a composite consisting of PEDOT:PSS/Graphene, deposited via spray coating on a flexible substrate, as an autonomous conducting film for applications in wearable biosensor devices. The stability of PEDOT:PSS/Graphene is assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear polarization (LP) during exposure to an artificial sweat electrolyte, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to investigate the morphological changes in the layer following these. The results indicate that the layers exhibit predominant capacitive behavior in the potential range of −0.3 to 0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl, with a cut-off frequency of approximately 1 kHz and retain 90% capacity after 500 cycles. Aging under exposure to air for 6 months leads only to a minor increase in impedance, demonstrating potential for storage under non-demanding conditions. However, prolonged exposure (>48 h) to the artificial sweat causes significant degradation, resulting in an impedance increase of over 1 order of magnitude. The observed degradation raises important considerations for the long-term viability of these layers in wearable biosensor applications, prompting the need for additional protective measures during prolonged use. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to enhance the stability and reliability of conducting materials for biosensors in health care and biotechnology applications.

Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a direct readout of the body’s sympathetic nervous system measured as sweat-induced changes in the skin’s electrical conductance. There is growing interest in using EDA to track physiological conditions such as stress levels, sleep quality, and emotional states. Standardized EDA data analysis methods are readily available. However, none considers an established physiological feature of EDA. The sympathetically mediated pulsatile changes in skin sweat measured as EDA resemble an integrate-and-fire process. An integrate-and-fire process modeled as a Gaussian random walk with drift diffusion yields an inverse Gaussian model as the interpulse interval distribution. Therefore, we chose an inverse Gaussian model as our principal probability model to characterize EDA interpulse interval distributions. To analyze deviations from the inverse Gaussian model, we considered a broader model set: the generalized inverse Gaussian distribution, which includes the inverse Gaussian and other diffusion and nondiffusion models; the lognormal distribution which has heavier tails (lower settling rates) than the inverse Gaussian; and the gamma and exponential probability distributions which have lighter tails (higher settling rates) than the inverse Gaussian. To assess the validity of these probability models we recorded and analyzed EDA measurements in 11 healthy volunteers during 1 h of quiet wakefulness. Each of the 11 time series was accurately described by an inverse Gaussian model measured by Kolmogorov–Smirnov measures. Our broader model set offered a useful framework to enhance further statistical descriptions of EDA. Our findings establish that a physiologically based inverse Gaussian probability model provides a parsimonious and accurate description of EDA.

AbstractThe 2014 film Whiplash depicts successful jazz drumming as an athletic exhibition of speed and endurance, in a manner that reflects its protagonist's idolization of Buddy Rich (1917–87). The crowd-pleasing virtuosity of Rich and Whiplash has drawn critics’ ire, but this article interrogates the ideas of musical authenticity that underpin their complaints, and offers a more productive analysis of the film's drum kit performances and their inspiration, informed by a range of jazz, film, and performance scholarship. Specific attention is drawn to the performances’ visual attractions. Whiplash's fast editing style and shots of exertion – grimacing, sweat, blood – give non-expert viewers a sense of drumming's physical and mental demands, and much the same is true of Rich's exaggerated movements and expressions, whether seen live or (as is commonly the case) amplified by a screen's mediation.

Herein, organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs)-based biosensors offer the advantages of good flexibility, low-cost fabrication, reasonable sensitivity, and great biocompatibility for efficient determination of biomarkers in complex samples, including saliva, sweat, urine, and blood, respectively, exhibiting great potential in early disease diagnosis and clinical treatment.

Flip chips using various adhesives were studied. The assembly yields using nonconductive adhesive and anisotropic conductive film investigated were 97% and 100%, respectively. A packaging process using anisotropic conductive paste with a 100% packaging yield was developed. All the packages passed various reliability tests such as burn in, artificial sweat and humidity tests, and temperature cycling tests. The reliability of the packages was 100% meeting the requirements for an industrial application. A stud bump bonding process with reduced process steps was proposed. Curing of conductive adhesive and underfill epoxy was not required, resulting in reduced packaging time.

Over time, difficulties have been encountered in detecting potential fingerprints. In this study, an Ag/CMCS/PVA(ACP) hydrogel film was developed for fingerprint development by electron beam radiation method. The chemical bond, thermostability, chemical components, microstructure, and micromorphology of the CMCS/PVA composite hydrogel film were characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, and SEM, respectively. Swelling behaviors and mechanical performance of the CMCS/PVA composite hydrogel were also investigated at different irradiation doses, pH, media, and NaCl contents to obtain the optimum preparation conditions. Through experimental exploration, we found that the fingerprints appeared more obvious when the irradiated prepared ACP hydrogel film was sprayed with 0.6 mg/mL of Ag+ and the excitation wavelength was about 254 nm with UV lamp irradiation for 20 min. The cytotoxicity the CMCS/PVA composite hydrogel on mouse skin fibroblasts L929 cells was also studied, confirming its biological security. Firefighters' thermal environment was continuously measured while they attempted to suppress well-developed experimental bushfires of intensities commonly faced by hand-tool crews, and also while they built fireline in the same way without fire, during three summers in Australian eucalypt forests. They worked far enough from the flames to avoid painful intensities of radiant heat (>2 kW m-2) on bare skin and usually experienced 1.6 kW m-2 - little more than the intensity of sunlight Fire had negligible effects on average air temperature, humidity, or wired speed. Exertion accounted for 71% of the total heat load, fire and weather for the remainder. Evaporation was effectively the sole means of heat dissipation, and predicted sweat loss exceeded one litre per hour. Indices of heat stress usually exceeded occupational limits proposed for heat-acclimatized men, although little additional strain resulted. We conclude that firefighters should be fit and acclimatized, wear light and loose clothing that imposes minimal resistance to evaporation, and drink at least 1 litre of water per hour.

A 49-year-old woman presented with fever, weight loss, night sweats, hematochezia, and acid reflux symptoms. Two large, firm cecal lesions were seen at colonoscopy, but multiple biopsies were inconclusive. The patient underwent a right hemicolectomy for a clinical diagnosis of colon cancer. Noncaseating granulomatous inflammation with background lymphocytes, plasma cells, and histiocytes exhibiting emperipolesis were identified. With these histologic features and immunoreactivity for S-100 protein and CD68, a diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease was rendered. Other areas had storiform fibrosis admixed with numerous immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)–positive plasma cells. Although a few preliminary reports have noted an increased number of IgG4-positive plasma cells in Rosai-Dorfman disease, the relationship between these 2 conditions is unclear. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a possible association of colonic Rosai-Dorfman disease with an increased number of IgG4-positive plasma cells. Reviews of colonic Rosai-Dorfman disease and IgG4-related sclerosis are presented to heighten awareness of this rare presentation.

Abstract Abstract 4332 Here we reported one case of atypical T cell prolymphocytic leukemia. The 38-year female was admitted to our hospital for fatigue and night sweat. She complained of fatigue and night sweat for one month and accompanied by gum bleeding. Physical examination showed anemia and massive spleen extending to umbilical level. Blood routine test indicated pancytopenia (detailed info: Wbc 0.66×109/L,Hb 82g/L,Plt 60×109/L)and elevated proportion of lymphocytes. Blood biochemistry and routine serum tumor marker were normal. Mutation of JAK2V617F was negative. Marrow film showed many atypical mature lymphocytes which expressed mature T cell markers. Marrow biopsy showed a SLL-like scene and accompanied by local fibrosis, immunochemical stains strong CD3, CD45-R0, CD43 and weak CD5, MPO. Repeated TCR β rearrangement indicated positive. PET/CT scan could not find specific elevated SUV lesions. This patient may be diagnosed as atypical T cell prolymphocytic leukemia despite her lymphocytopenia and unpalpable peripheral lymph nodes. She received one cycle of CVP (cyclophosphamide, Vincristine and prednisone) and another cycle of CHOP(cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin, Vincristine and prednisone). Her blood cell count partly recovered and she was preparing for following high dose chemotherapy. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Swearing is used in every human language activity. Swearing can be found in films as a form of literary work that provides entertainment and describes the phenomenon of social reality. The Yowis Ben 2 film is a youth comedy genre film that contains swear words using local languages, Javanese and Sundanese. This research focuses on a sociopragmatic study of Javanese and Sundanese swearing in the film Yowis Ben 2 to look at the references, functions, and implicatures of swearing speech acts in both languages. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method. The primary data is in the form of swearing in Javanese and Sundanese in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and scenes for each character in the film, and the secondary data is in the form of previous studies related to swearing in Javanese and Sundanese. Data collection techniques are carried out by documenting, listening, recording, and analyzing content. Data analysis techniques are carried out by reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions and by using pragmatic equivalent studies in order to reveal swearing implicatures in two languages. The results of the research show that not all swearing in Javanese and Sundanese languages found in the film "Yowis Ben 2" encompasses the entire classification of swearing. The Sundanese language presents a more diverse variety of profanity vocabulary compared to Javanese. Implicatures from the use of profanity in both languages include expressions of feelings such as annoyance, anger, disappointment, surprise, admiration, and familiarity. This research has significant implications for understanding how profanity is used within specific cultural and social contexts, such as in teen comedy films. Furthermore, further research can explore how film translators work to translate profanity vocabulary from regional languages into Indonesian or foreign languages, providing further insights into the cultural adaptation process in the film industry.

Abstract Introduction Previous research has shown that comfort, including comfort of the sleep surface, is essential to sleep quality. In addition to comfort, temperature regulation plays an important role in sleep quality. This study compared sleep on a mattress protector designed to help keep the sleeper cool to participants’ prior sleep on their original bedding. Methods Healthy adults (69% female, ages 21-76; mean age=44) who reported sleeping hot or night sweats, as well as difficulties with frequent awakenings or time spent awake during the night, participated in a 6-week field study, using a pre-post intervention design. During the 3-week baseline period, participants used their regular bedding at home. During the 3-week intervention period, they used Sleepy’s Cooling Knit Protector. This mattress protector includes breathable materials designed to draw heat away from the body. Sleep was measured objectively using a PSG-validated, non-contact biomotion device, SleepScore Max, every night and by daily and pre-post self-report. Multilevel regression and paired t-tests were used to test for statistical significance. Results There were 973 nights of tracked sleep across 33 participants. Objective sleep measurements showed decreased sleep onset latency (-7 minutes, p=.010) when using the mattress protector compared to baseline. Self-report measures revealed that participants felt cooler and more comfortable, perceived a reduction in sleeping too hot or experiencing night sweats, felt they had better overall sleep quality, and felt more well-rested in the morning (all ps&lt;.05). Conclusion Objectively measured sleep onset latency and many aspects of self-reported sleep improved when using the cooling knit protector compared to the original bedding, suggesting that a comfortable and cool sleep surface can lead to improvements in sleep. The preorbital gland of the muskox is a relatively large pear-shaped structure lying rostral to the eye between the skin and the lacrimal bone. It surrounds a narrow tubular invagination of the skin, which conveys the largely aqueous secretion to the surface of the face. This tube, which enters the gland at its rostrolateral extremity and runs caudodorsally, is partially filled with stiff hairs that arise from follicles in its wall. Most of the gland consists of tightly packed apocrine sweat glands, but large sebaceous glands are associated with the hair follicles of the central tube. The myoepithelium of the sweat glands is highly developed but the facial muscles overlying the gland are very thin and probably do not contribute significantly to the expulsion of secretion. Secretion is mechanically expressed when the animal rubs the area of the gland on something firm such as its own foreleg (gland rubbing) or a prominent object in the environment (rubbing). The gland is functional in both sexes throughout the year but is much larger in males. In the wild, scent marking and gland rubbing occur during aggressive encounters between individuals within a herd, between herds, and between muskoxen and other species. Gland rubbing in females and subadults is usually restricted to interspecific encounters but in males it occurs in most intense agonistic situations. Wild calves performed the self-marking behaviour as early as 1 week of age when play fighting. Captive muskoxen did not rub their preorbital gland on the foreleg but commonly rubbed it on objects. The authors believe that the principal function of the preorbital gland is to provide an olfactory component of the threat behaviour pattern.

Abstract Localized scleroderma is an uncommon autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis of the skin and underlying tissue without involvement of blood vessels or internal organs. It usually affects children during later childhood, and early presentation of localized scleroderma during infancy is rare. In the current study, we report a child with localized scleroderma-related presentations occurring at birth. A 2-day-old male neonate presented with a firm, erythematous, and slightly pigmented plaque on his left thigh, leading to a change in the diameter of the affected foot and contracture of the left knee. At the age of 7 months, he was referred to our rheumatology clinic with normal growth and development. Laboratory studies, including urine and blood high-performance liquid chromatography assay, antinuclear antibodies, antitopoisomerase I, and rheumatic factor, were in the normal range. No signs of ocular involvement were noted during ophthalmological consultation. Skin biopsy showed mild acanthosis and collagen bundles, which replaced the fat around the sweat glands. A final diagnosis of localized scleroderma was made. Treatment was started with oral prednisolone, oral methotrexate (MTX), and colchicine. The skin lesion stopped progressing after 3 months of treatment. Steroid was then tapered over 6 months, while MTX and colchicine were continued for 2 years. Localized scleroderma during early infancy is a rare disease, but it should be considered as a differential in infants with erythematous and firm lesions on their body at birth because early treatment can prevent future complications.

Primary pericardial mesothelioma is an extremely rare and lethal cardiac tumor. We report an autopsy case of a primary pericardial mesothelioma in a 52-year-old man. He developed dyspnea, cough, low-grade fever and night sweats approximately 3 months before last admission. Initially, he was evaluated at a hospital in another city, without a firm diagnosis. Due to progressive symptoms and the development of lower-extremity edema, he presented at our hospital in September 2005. The physical examination at admission demonstrated signs of pericardial tamponade. Chest radiography revealed marked enlargement of the cardiac silhouette. Specimens of bloody pericardial fluid were positive for pericardial mesothelioma by cytologic examination. The general condition of the patient worsened very rapidly and he was transferred to the intensive care unit where he later died. Postmortem examination confirmed primary pericardial mesothelioma of the mixed/biphasic type with lymphatic metastasis in the right lung. By using immunohistochemical analysis for specific markers of mesothelioma and for differentiation of the mesothelioma from the lung adenocarcinoma, definitive diagnosis was established: primary pericardial mesothelioma.
