In an increasingly connected and interdependent world, the global sustainability challenge needs to be addressed by organizational networks from a whole-systems perspective. This study explores organizations through the lens of network theory and the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, with a special focus on networks already considering sustainability issues. The purpose of the research was to identify key factors critical to the success of an organizational network in the sustainability field, as well as define specific barriers to success for these networks. These specific factors and barriers to success are identified and explored across: Academic, Business, and Non-Profit sectors, with the ultimate objective of increasing the performance of Emerging Sustainability Networks (ESNs), removing barriers in the field, and planning strategically to achieve success in the sustainability movement.

The world has become considerably smaller through the effects of technology, media, science, transportation, the Internet, and the spread of global commerce. There has been a great deal of discussion about how to manage knowledge and foster individual, group, and organizational learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate the practices and behaviors that led to the formation of communities of practice (CoPs) in a multinational corporation, their impact on distributed global offices, and their influence on a learning and development culture. The study addressed the following question: What impact do CoPs have on a multinational corporation's learning and development culture? Using a mixed methods research design, the study found that CoPs socialized learning throughout distributed offices, they contributed to localized learning-focused identity, and shifted the corporation's learning and development culture towards a blend of clan and adhocractic cultures.

This research explores how strategic sustainable development (SSD) using theFramework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) might influence the resilience oforganizations, using the lens of adaptive capacity (AC). The topic was addressed by researchinghow practices informed by the FSSD are experienced in relation to fostering organizations’ AC.Data was gathered through interviews and a focus group with FSSD practitioners and interviewswith sustainability champions applying the FSSD inside organizations. The findings show thatthe FSSD has the potential to foster AC in organizations, although it isn’t designed for it.Especially the systems perspective and backcasting from principles, which are core to theFSSD, proofed helpful. However, the data shows that there are conditions to foster AC throughSSD. Important is a long-term, iterative use of the FSSD, as well as the human-centered aspectsof facilitation and leadership. The existing culture of organizations showed to be critical as well.There are further implications that render the FSSD’s potential as an organizationaldevelopment tool. An opportunity lies in understanding organizations from a social systemsperspective and in using the complexity science behind it to stress this viewpoint in practice,both strengthening resilience and the sustainability practice.

The concept of sustainable development has largely failed to address environmental and social crises in a meaningful and transformative way, despite its growing popularity. Ecofeminism offers a way to understand and challenge assumptions embedded in the sustainable development discourse. A critical reading of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s discourse identified six themes: (1) economic empowerment of women (2) reporting does matter (3) reporting on socio-economic measurements (4) solutions for all (5) shifting focus and (6) defining the middle class. Each theme is based on one of five different characteristics of dualism. It can be concluded that sustainable development discourse perpetuates the dualism of Progress / Rejuvenation which is a duality that further maintains a broad system of dualism already in existence throughout Western society. The study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of more diverse platforms of understanding that allow for transformative solutions to pressing ecological and social crises.

In order to determine the dynamic factors inducing the evolution of environmental management strategies in the context of sustainable development, I draw upon theory from the field of general evolutionary sciences (including chaos theory, complexity science, and nonlinear thermodynamics). I translate this emerging theoretical worldview to a general evolutionary methodology for the analysis of sustainable development strategies. Application of the methodology to selected case studies indicates that sustainable development strategies co-evolve in response to organizational values, technology, and organizational structure inside the firm, and to the environmental management field outside the firm. Competing notions of sustainable development influence the politicization process that limits the types of sustainable development strategies chosen and implemented. The evidence also indicates that new pathways of efficiency are emerging in sustainable development based on market driven strategies, institutional partnerships, and the formation of new industries. The dissertation is based on case study analysis of three sustainable development projects of three different environmental organizations, the International Institute for Energy Conservation, the Environmental Law Institute, and Sanders International. The results have implications for sustainable development theory and practical implications for policy analysts and sustainable development advocates, as well as for a subtler and deeper personal understanding of our place in the world.

This research seeks to identify how an organization's facility management (FM) practices relate with the state of sustainability in the organization. A review of the literature leads to presentation of a model defining these relationships. The concepts of direct and indirect FM sustainability roles in organizational sustainability are presented. Accepted facility metrics found in the APPA Facilities Performance Indicator Survey are used as indicators of FM in University System of Georgia institutions and are tested for correlation with sustainability best practices scores generated in an assessment performed for this research. FM performance indicators representing the direct role of FM are not found to be correlated with organizational sustainability best practicesin USG higher education organizations.

This thesis explores the capacities, challenges and differences of three Swedish environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs). It uses a case study method to examine the ENGOs Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, Friends of the Earth Sweden and Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation. The study will explore what capacities and challenges the organizations have to sustain and develop, using capacity development as an analytical framework. Qualitative methods are used for gathering data. The findings of this study indicates that all three of the organizations have several capacities that is suggested by the theory capacity development, such as monitoring and evaluating the organization, developed communication to donors and supporters, accountability, clear aim and goals, etc. These three ENGOs is well established in the society of Sweden and have been active for a minimum of three decades. However, there are always capacities and strategies that can develop and be more effective, as well as addressing organizational challenges. The challenges founded in this study that all three organizations have in common, is the issues of being dependent on external funding and donations, and the communication between branches of the organizations as well as among members of the staff. Increased communication could better unify the organization and less dependence of external funding and donations could make the organizations more stable as well as sustainable.

Motivated by an assumption of and concern about the unsustainable trajectory of modern human civilization, the purpose of this study was to develop a measurement tool to assist organizations striving to align their operations with principles of sustainability. The relevant context is established with consideration of the dimensions of environment, society and economy, as well as their interconnections, with an eye towards sustainability. Some of the challenges and opportunities presented to organizations by the current unsustainable trajectory are reviewed. The social constructs of culture and climate (organizational and psychological) are discussed as important to understand organizational life. I propose the notion of a sustainability climate to represent factors within the organization that are theorized as important for successfully integrating the principles of sustainability into organizational decision-making and routine behaviors. Items were developed to tap the theorized constructs and were administered to a population of university employees (N = 252). The study explored construct validity of these measures through exploratory factor analysis, assessment of internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity, and criterion validity. Results provide preliminary evidence for the reliability and validity of the sustainability climate factors (perceived top-management support, shared vision, employee involvement, rewards, sustainability norms), and factors of sustainability beliefs (personal understanding, supportive attitude, and positive engagement). These factors' power predicting the criteria, sustainability role expectations, sustainability role behaviors, and environmental stewardship demonstrates the potential to improve upon the instrument. Limitations of the present study are discussed and appropriate application of the Sustainability Climate Survey is explored.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A fundamental shift has occurred from the industrial age, traditional worldview to the knowledge age, emerging worldview. The implication of this shift is that organisations can no longer rely on an enduring competitive advantage for sustainable results. This raises questions about the relevance of the existing organisational performance approaches in addressing the challenge of complexity, particularly with regard to the validity and reliability of the established performance management frameworks. In the industrial age, financial measures were sufficient for measuring organisational performance. However, the emergence of the networked economy implies that a more composite measure is required, which reflects the diversity of stakeholder interests. The research confirms that, whilst there is no universal agreement in defining organisational performance, there is agreement that sustainable organisational performance is a combination of growth (social and economic measures) and profitability (financial measures). Further, the research confirms the existence of gaps, which undermine organisational performance. These gaps originate from the divergent approaches to organisational performance, which can be traced through the evolution of organisational development theory and management practice. Existing research studies collaborate the existence of these divergent approaches in determining organisational performance. These approaches include execution, strategy and people, representing the ‘ESP’ of organisational performance. Execution refers to a process based, micro perspective of organisational performance, whilst strategy and people refer to the systemic, macro approaches. In conditions of hyper-change, execution is considered to be the key determinant of organisational performance, whilst the traditional, strategy approach is found to be essential in addressing the challenge of complexity. The emergence of the networked economy implies that a more composite, people approach is required to address the challenges associated with increasing connectivity. The research proposition contends that an execution culture is necessary for addressing the challenge of complexity. This culture is dependent on the strategic fusion of the divergent strategy and people approaches and the existence of a strategic paradigm throughout the organisation. Organisational performance resides in an organisation’s ability to integrate the divergent approaches, to develop the necessary dynamic capabilities for sustainable organisational performance. The Performance ‘ESP’ framework reflects the integration of these approaches and provides a visual confirmation of the research proposition. The level of execution is determined by the existence of a strategic paradigm throughout the organisation, which is determined by individual performance, defined by the level of effectiveness, strength (individual) and partnership (‘ESP’). The development of a strategic paradigm is particularly relevant in the South African context, where historical factors have inhibited the level of empowerment within organisations. It is recommended that organisations apply the Performance ‘ESP’ index as a diagnostic tool to assess the existence of an execution culture to address the challenge of complexity. The purpose of the assessment tool is to complement the financial measures of performance, to ensure a balance between profitability and growth, to ensure sustainable organisational performance.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar het ‘n fundamentele verandering plaasgevind van die industriële tydperk en tradisionele wêreldbeskouiing na die kennistydperk en opkomende wêreldbeskouing. Die implikasie van hierdie verandering is dat organisasies nie meer kan staatmaak op ‘n deurlopende mededingende voordeel vir volhoubare resultate nie. Dit laat vrae ontstaan oor die toepaslikheid van die bestaande organisatoriese prestasiebenaderings om die uitdaging van kompleksiteit te hanteer, veral met betrekking tot die geldigheid en betroubaarheid van die bestaande prestasiebestuursraamwerke. Tydens die industriële tydperk was finansiële maatstawwe voldoende om organisasieprestasie te meet. Die opkoms van die netwerk-ekonomie impliseer egter dat ‘n meer saamgestelde maatstaf nodig is, wat die diversiteit van die belange van belanghebbers weerspieël. Die navorsing bevestig dat, hoewel daar geen universele ooreenkoms is in die definisie van organisasieprestasie nie, daar wel ooreenkoms is dat volhoubare organisasieprestasie ‘n kombinasie is van groei (sosiale en ekonomiese maatreëls) en winsgewendheid (finansiële maatreëls). Daarbenewens bevestig die navorsing die bestaan van gapings wat organisasieprestasie ondermyn. Hierdie gapings ontstaan uit die uiteenlopende benaderings tot organisasieprestasie, wat gevolg kan word deur die evolusie van organisasie-ontwikkelingsteorie en bestuurspraktyk. Bestaande navorsingstudies gebruik ‘n samestelling van hierdie uiteenlopende benaderings om organisasieprestasie te bepaal. Hierdie benaderings sluit in uitvoering, strategie en mense, wat in die Engelse afkorting die ‘ESP’ van organisasieprestasie verteenwoordig. Uitvoering verwys na ‘n prosesgebaseerde mikroperspektief van organisasieprestasie, terwyl strategie en mense verwys na die sistemiese makrobenaderings. In omstandighede van hiperverandering word uitvoering gesien as die sleutelbepaler van organisasieprestasie, terwyl die tradisionele strategiebenadering noodsaaklik is vir die hantering van die uitdaging van kompleksiteit. Die opkoms van die netwerk-ekonomie impliseer dat ‘n meer saamgestelde, mensbenadering nodig is om die uitdagings te hanteer wat saamgaan met groter onderlinge verbondenheid. Die navorsingsvoorstel se uitgangspunt is dat ‘n uitvoeringskultuur nodig is om die uitdaging van kompleksiteit te hanteer. Hierdie kultuur is afhanklik van die strategiese samesmelting van die uiteenlopende strategie- en mensbenaderings en die bestaan van ‘n strategiese paradigma dwarsdeur die organisasie. Organisasieprestasie hang af van ‘n organisasie se vermoë om die uiteenlopende benaderings te integreer en die nodige dinamiese bekwaamhede te ontwikkel vir volhoubare organisasieprestasie. Die prestasie- of ‘ESP’-raamwerk weerspieël die integrasie van hierdie benaderings en voorsien ‘n visuele bevestiging van die navorsingsvoorstel. Abstract: Given the global sustainability challenge; effective organizational Social Responsibility (SR) guidelines must set best-practices that acknowledge environmental constraints and strive for a sustainable society. SR has historically underrepresented environmental issues and needs to shift from a reactive focus on societal stakeholder demands, to a proactive whole-systems planning framework. There is a risk that unless SR guidelines consider both social and environmental issues together, they may generate negative outcomes to organizational viability. This research finds key Sustainable Development concepts that should be integrated within SR guidelines and uncovers an overall goal of SR as assisting organizations in moving towards a sustainable society. A Sustainable Society is defined in the research according to a set of scientific principles, based on environmental constraints and fundamental social needs. This clear goal enables the organization to ‘backcast’ from this success point in order to take effective strategic steps. The authors recommend the incorporation of critical concepts from Strategic Sustainable Development, a proven organizational sustainability planning framework, into SR guidelines to increase their effectiveness in strategic SR decision-making. The ISO 26000 SR Guideline is used as a case study.

Title:             Organizational interactions in the energy sector regarding environment and growth – case study of Mälarenergi AB

Problem:       Energy sector has been much debated regarding growth and environmental issues. Energy situation in 2020 sets an emergency that a New Energy Policy has to be made immediately in order to meet the growing energy demand without compromising the environment. Thus the energy sector is strictly regulated by national and international level policies. It is interesting to investigate how organizations interact with each other in the sector regarding growth and environment.   

Purpose:       Aim of this thesis is to describe the inter-organizational relationships in the Swedish energy sector and analyze how organizations interact with each other depending on their attitude towards sustainable development. The research involves a case study of a local energy company Mälarenergi AB and different actors in its institutional field and how the company acts according to its interests in forming relationships with others.

Method:        This thesis is an interpretive case study which aims to research the link between understanding and action. Organizational and institutional theories are used as theoretical framework. Empirical data will be collected through qualitative semi-structured interview with organizational members as well as secondary data that are collected through literature, documentation, archival records and previous researches.  

Result:          The Swedish energy sector is a complex field that consists of different actors and complicated relationships. The sector is mainly affected by national and EU-level decisions thus a local energy company is regulated by national and EU-level environmental policies. Interactions with other actors are fundamental in Mälarenergi’s institutional field. Organizations form co-operations and collaborations in order to achieve environmental goals as well as to conduct joint R&D activities. The environment pressure made it clear that the organizations have to work together in order to maintain a sustainable growth in the energy sector.

After the introduction of the term,  sustainable development, a variety of  academicians from different disciplines tried to conceptualize it in their own way, drawing on these views, many different degrees but with similar titles have been established in many universities all around the world. Masters  program in  Sustainable Development  (MSD) at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is one the most recent ones. Before starting this study, it was investigated that the expectations of the different actors in this program are not fulfilled completely. Presence of many different ideas and perspectives in addition to the high number of actors involved in the situation made the situation too complex to be fixed easily. Therefore, the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), as an appropriate approach for improving complex problematic situations,  is  used to reform the organization of  the  MSD in coming years. The process of identifying the  challenges of this program and then  improving some of them in  practice  are described in this thesis. Alongside the  action phase, the applications of Systems Approach in transformation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are explored.  It is investigated that three levels of learning, i.e. basic, meta-  and epistemic learning, and accordingly three levels of organizational change, i.e. the first, second and third order, need to be recognized, if an ESD program is to be different from the unsustainable trends of education.

The purpose of this thesis is to test a combination of tools and theory to identify corporate sustainable development as part of organizational performance. Nowadays, in global business, the concept and application of sustainable development has become an important factor in the daily operations and strategies for the companies. The policies and practices of the companies are more aware of environmental, social and financial aspects. The publication of sustainability and environmental reports is becoming more popular within business. The media and stakeholders as customers, investors or government offices are more interested in the company’s position towards social and environmental issues. Therefore, the above purpose could be a potential asset for businesses and researchers to relate corporate sustainable development with organizational performance. We will not try to generalize, but test the usability of the theory combined in one model, which can be an asset to test corporate sustainability within a company’s organizational performance. This research will have a deductive approach, and could possibly encourage inductive research for further study. The theoretical framework consists of three sections including two theories, which uniquely identify corporate sustainable development (CSD) and organizational performance (OP). Finally, a combination of these two theories is shown as a practical model that we will try to test in a case. Our thesis will have a qualitative approach. Interviews are the main data collection tool as secondary data (company documents etc.). Secondary data is used as a supporting collection method. The personal interviews, conducted through video conferencing, have been recorded and transcribed for usage in the empirical method. The interview guide can be found in the appendix. The outcome of this research shows that many aspects are entangled within the phenomenon known as “corporate sustainable development”. We have found that economic prosperity has a strong presence (in both cases) within the environmental performance, just as social equity showed within learning and development performance, and social equity has a strong link with social performance. Looking at the case companies, and determining the focus on every dimension, we therefore found measurable relations between OP variables and CSD dimensions. We can also conclude that, when performing the second case analysis (Sveaskog), the results of the measures found were not always similar which asks for more case studies. An overall conclusion on the usability of the measurement tool leans towards positive, for practical usage. However, before using this combination of tools, more research is necessary, especially in the area of multiple case studies. Due to time restrictions, we could compare two case companies, whilst more cases could enhance the general application and usability of these tools.

After the introduction of the term, sustainable development, a variety of academicians fromdifferent disciplines tried to conceptualize it in their own way, drawing on these views, manydifferent degrees but with similar titles have been established in many universities all around theworld.Masters program in Sustainable Development (MSD) at Uppsala University and the SwedishUniversity of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is one the most recent ones. Before starting this study, itwas investigated that the expectations of the different actors in this program are not fulfilledcompletely. Presence of many different ideas and perspectives in addition to the high number ofactors involved in the situation made the situation too complex to be fixed easily. Therefore, theSoft Systems Methodology (SSM), as an appropriate approach for improving complex problematicsituations, is used to reform the organization of the MSD in coming years. The process ofidentifying the challenges of this program and then improving some of them in practice aredescribed in this thesis. Alongside the action phase, the applications of Systems Approach intransformation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are explored.It is investigated that three levels of learning, i.e. basic, meta- and epistemic learning, andaccordingly three levels of organizational change, i.e. the first, second and third order, need to berecognized, if an ESD program is to be different from the unsustainable trends of education.

Introduction: The study focuses on organizations that operate in the construction industry. The organizations studied are Skanska, Veidekke, and Serneke. The three organizations are established organizations in the Scandinavian construction industry. The study focuses on Skanska, Veidekke, and Serneke – three companies in the Scandinavian construction industry. Aim: The aim of this study is to develop an understanding regarding the impact of the company’s intrinsic competencies on the company’s internal development, which leads to sustainable organizational growth. This study identifies three intrinsic competencies: communication, organizational structure and behavior, and the organization’s motivation and cohesion. Methodology: The authors have interviewed the CEOs of each company and have further interviewed two managers at each company. The study followed a qualitative approach to tackle the concept of sustainable organizational growth. Findings & Conclusion: This study provides an insight regarding how companies view the importance of internal growth of the companies. All the companies analyzed in this study have put a high importance on the development of their intrinsic competencies to maintain internal organizational development. The companies have also identified that the internal organizational development is a vital criterion that leads to sustainable organizational growth. Theoretical Contributions: The theoretical framework developed for this study identifies the gap in the research and further enhances the understanding of sustainable organizational growth in the Swedish construction industry. Managerial Implications: The organizations studied have portrayed a focus on environmental sustainability as a key determinant for sustainable organizational growth. This study further highlights that without the development of the organization’s intrinsic competencies and internal organizational development, environmental sustainability is not feasible. The three organizations studied have exhibited a foundation that focuses on the development of their intrinsic competencies and internal organizational development. The foundation that the companies developed enables sustainable organizational growth, which encompasses environmental sustainability. Limitations: The study focuses on three companies in the Swedish construction industry and ascertains conclusions based on the findings of the three companies. The external validity of this study is a limitation as the findings can differ if the study is conducted on a different sample pool. Suggestions regarding future research: The framework provides a foundation for future research to be conducted on construction industries similar to the Swedish construction industry. The study uses Hill & Bowen’s (1997) framework to develop the foundations that enabled the development of this study’s theoretical framework. This study’s theoretical framework can be further examined and used to expand the findings of this study and future studies regarding the Swedish construction industry.

Psychological employee well-being is a severe challenge for companies around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem and forced companies to act to ensure a healthy and productive workforce. Based on the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R), this study examines the leader's perspective on how decision making, and communication processes have been altered in the face of the pandemic and how these alterations can promote the advancement of psychological well-being. Another central research focus is the impact of the changes in decision making and communication processes on the sustainable development of the organization. The relatively new perspective of the Psychology of Sustainability and Sustainable Development (PoS&SD) is applied to investigate these questions. A qualitative approach was chosen and a total of ten organizations were studied, half in Sweden and half in Germany. With the support of semi-structured interviews, leaders of small and medium-sized organizations in both countries were interviewed, and their perceptions were explored. The results showed that almost all companies in the study implemented changes to the two processes because they perceived deterioration in employee psychological well-being. While most leaders in Sweden indicated that they had given employees more autonomy throughout the pandemic, leaders in Germany reported a greater desire for direction and structure. The communication style likewise required adjustment to meet the new way of working and employees’ needs. Finally, it could be shown that the topic of employees’ psychological well-being will take on a higher priority in many companies in the wake of the pandemic. This is partially since companies have recognized that the fostering of psychological well-being is closely linked to sustainable development.

How and why do organizations approach greening? How can we conceptualize approaches and how can we encourage reflexive dialogues on them? These are the main questions addressed in this qualitative study on organizational greening. The study sets off by discussing matters of research philosophy, arguing that our trust in science ought to be revised and that a more postmodern and constructionist philosophy might be a way to go. This is then followed by a theoretical review, showing that organizational studies have a history in environmental issues, but that it is basically technocentric in orientation. A more reflexive organizational approach is suggested. The empirical part of the study is based on qualitative research of five case studies, representing a mix of organizations situated in Sweden, all with an explicit ambition to approach greening. The analyses target the organizations' approaches from practice to assumptions, pointing at the commonalities as well as the tensions. Basically, greening was an issue for all studied organizations, but an increasing pressure to market-orient their operations in line with the business rhetoric dominated their identity construction. The environment was included if there were opportunities of win-win situations between environment and economy in sight. Once embarked upon, the organizations tended to focus on technocratic practices, developing or implementing management systems, product development indexes, life-cycle methodologies and other tools. On a more philosophical level, in the study referred to as the worldview level, the approaches were predominandy characterized by a representative epistemology and a dualistic ontology, that is, they were clearly anthropocentric. With a base in these findings, an alternative approach is discussed as a way out, or as a way of constructing a reflexive dialogue on greening. This is partly based on the tensions within and between the cases, which encouraged reflections on how greening was approached. In the alternative, organizations are seen as actors on a symbolic agora where transparency, participation and self-reflexivity are keys to organizational legitimacy. This view frames organizations in the dominating approach as agoraphobic producers of materialistically dependent satisfiers. The alternative also targets the limits of a preference and materialistically oriented view on die satisfaction of human needs. Instead, it is argued that environmental and cultural sensitivity should be acknowledged as natural parts of organizational greening. This, however, demands more room for reflexive dialogues encouraging ontological awareness and a respect for more ecocentric views.

Current methods for reaching and defining success in society are not sustainable. A major shift in society’s definition of economic success is required, and organizations represent a key leverage point in the transition to a sustainable economy. This research looks to practices within organizations with a sustainability purpose in an attempt to understand how their organizational culture creates an environment for continual strategic decision making towards sustainability. A combination of literature review and structured interviews were used to elicit the cultural practices of 18 organizations with a clear social and ecological sustainability purpose. The research confirmed the importance of organizational culture for maintaining alignment with a sustainability purpose by fostering motivation and commitment towards sustainability at both a collective and individual level in the organization. Eight overarching areas of practice were identified as being present in the organizations included in the study. The practices identified help organizations to act strategically and in the right direction towards sustainability on a daily basis, standing as a complement to the strategic prioritization model of the FSSD.

The main goal of this study was to deepen an understanding of exploring organisational learning and sustainability using critical action research methodology in a Kenyan context. The research process invloved a group of 23 middle level management emplyees of the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) in identifying and acting on sustainability issues. This group was designed and cultivated as a community of practice for organisational learning purposes. The basic premise underlying the study is that exploring agential, structural and cultural interactions (morphogenetic relationships) through educational interventions (communicative interactions) in a community of practice can deepen context specific understanding of organisational learning and sustainability. I developed this argument by drawing on a complex philosophical framework that brought together assumptions from Archerian social realism, Deweyan pragmatism and critical theory. The framework underpinned three distinct and yet related theoretical perspectives - the Archerian morphogenetic approach. Habermasian critical theory and Lave and Wenger's communities of practice. The Archerian morphogenetic approach and Habermasian critical theory respectively provided ontological and epistemological perspectives for the study. Lave and Wenger's communities of practice approach provided both a unit of analysis (the NMK community) and a social theory of learning to complement the Archerian and Habermasian theoretical perspectives. -- I generated data within a 14-month period between March 2005 and March 2007 in three distinct but integrally intertwined broad action research cycles of inquiry. During the first cycle, the research group identified contextual issues related to organisational learning and sustainability. In the second cycle the group investigated the issues deeper and deliberated possibilities for social change and the emergence of sustainability. The final cycle delineated social learning outcomes from the study and explored ways of institutionalising social change processes. Throughout these cycles, I explored ways of knowing the social reality of enabling organisational learning and sustainability. The cycles were integral to communicative interactions, which I implemented as educational interventions for developing agency in the NMK community of practice. Data analysis was undertaken within cyclical processes of entering and managing data, manual coding and developing categories, identifying themes, presenting results and validating findings. -- Undertaking a collaborative critical organisational analysis of the NMK revealed various contextual factors that both constrained and enabled participant learning capabilities and reflexivity to address sustainability issues. These factors manifested as contextually mediated issues of communication and information flows, decision making and leadership (governance), staff motivation and development, financial management and identity and role of the NMK. The research process promoted collective social action and innovation, forstered critical reflections and reflexivity, enhanced democratic deliberations and strengthened systemic thinking capabilities in the NMK community of practice. This study contributes to the body of literature on environmental education in its employment of a coherent and complex philosophical and thoretical framework for exploring organisational learning and sustainability.

This thesis examines approaches consultants use to assist organizational leaders in moving strategically towards sustainability. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), is examined to understand how one can overcome and address the complex challenges that consultants face in assisting leaders to develop appropriate leadership skills and sustainability knowledge that will allow them to lead their organizations strategically towards sustainability. Two consulting firms located in London are reviewed. From this research, an ideal way of using the FSSD called the Strategic Leadership Training Framework (SLTF) is proposed as a tool to guide and supplement current approaches used by consulting firms to improve their leadership training programs. A gap analysis compares the SLTF and the current approaches used by consultants. The SLTF can be used as a tool to assist consultants to find the gaps between the approaches they use and the SLTF. Finally, emotional intelligence and a definition of sustainability are found to be a key factor for a leader to be successful when moving their organization strategically towards sustainability.

In this research the empirical case of the “Partnership for Sustainability”, a long-term partnership between a major player in the German grocery retail industry and one of the biggest environmental organizations in Germany, was explored in order to gain an understanding of organizational learning processes within non-profit and business collaborations towards sustainability. Using existing theoretical concepts about organizational learning and sustainability in the field of cross-sectoral collaboration these fields of research are brought together. As a result, organizational learning processes within the non-profit and between the partnering organizations were identified and the associated learning results were pointed out. Therefore, essential changes and adaptations in the Partnership for Sustainability could be explored throughout theyears of the collaboration. Furthermore, the contribution of organizational learning processes to a cross-sectoral collaboration has been illuminated.

Many organisational flaws are consequences of unsuitable structure arrangements that do not support the organisation in its work towards goal accomplishment. The appropriateness of the structure is determined by how well it allows the organisation to respond to the environment in which it is active. Furthermore, an organisation is divided into parts with their own requirements on the structure. CSR is a concept that enables for a wider perspective of how to conduct business, thereby strengthening the link between the organisation and the external society. It addresses the issues of how a company can create sustainable wealth through behaving in a responsible way where a high responsiveness to the environment is crucial. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to describe and analyse how the organisational social structure of the CSR work can help and enhance such engagement.

An abductive approach have steered the authors when conducting this study. Qualitative data is explicitly used, gathered through interviews with representatives from ABB and Skanska. The data derived from these interviews provides a picture of what, why and how the two companies have chosen to work with CSR issues as well as how they have chosen to structure the work. Using the theoretical frame and the empirical data an analyse of the characteristics and arguments for CSR and the cultural, motivational and structural aspects led to the identification of requirements that this work place on the structure and how ABB and Skanska handle these requirements.

The objective of CSR is to be able to assess the business impact on the society and from that standpoint create a way to handle those impacts. Therefore the work is different from company to company but with common requirements on the structure where some are, local responsiveness, creativity and unified work. To answer to these requirements the structure should preferable have the characteristics of horizontal differentiation and specialisation on group level, an integration based on both human interaction and documents where standardisation should be avoided. This implies that the requirements of CSR are best met when the mechanic and the organic structure meet. An organic organisation needs mechanical traits to allow for the guidelines, directives and responsibilities to be defined in order to reach a unified picture. The mechanical on the other hand needs organic characteristics to support and allow for continuous improvements and work that takes local conditions into account.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Now more than ever, organisations need to be resilient and sustainable. The world of business has changed irrevocably since the industrial age and organisational strategies have not adapted much in response to this environmental change. Are there new organisational strategies suited to this changed environment, with characteristics contributing to sustainable futures? The purpose of the paper is to highlight those principles and characteristics that could be linked to the creation of sustainable and resilient organisations. A brief review of the literature available on emergent organisational strategies and complex systems provides context to the paper. A number of specific organisational strategies are identified, while characteristics pointing to the sustainability of theses strategies in a complex environment are investigated. With the literature study a starting point, the paper then offers a detailed case study of an organisation which consciously uses a number of principles to support sustainable innovation. The principles and practices used by Kessels & Smit – The Learning Company, emerge as patterns from the data analysis. With these findings and the literature study as a foundation, a number of principles are proposed as recommendations for designing organisational strategies aimed at sustainable futures within organisations.

It has been argued that for the management of complex issues such as sustainability, which transcend traditional policy sectors and require coordination between several different interests and actors, policymaking depends upon collaboration and integration processes between different sectors and tiers of government. The overall aim of this thesis is therefore to study how and why (or why not) policy integration processes are being developed in regional policymaking and what this means for the achievement of sustainable transport. The thesis consists of two separate qualitative case studies of policymaking in two Swedish regions, one representing a least likely case and the other a most likely case of policy integration. The focus has been on the organizational actors involved in policymaking processes for the regional transport system. For the general discussion the theoretical framework of policy integration, complemented by the analytical concepts of policy logics, organizational identities and boundary object are used. The findings are presented in four articles. An overall conclusion is that policy integration processes do not necessarily result in policy for sustainable transport. If policy integration becomes a goal in itself and the same as joint policy, it risks neglecting sustainable values and becoming the smallest common denominator that a number of actors can agree on. For developing sustainable transport solutions, collaboration for the coordination of policy may be beneficial, but the aim of such processes should not be joint policy.
För att beslut och riktlinjer ska kunna utformas så att de leder till lösningar av komplexa frågor, såsom hållbar utveckling, anses de behöva hanteras i samverkan mellan flertalet berörda sektorer och beslutsfattande nivåer. Det är dessa samverkansprocesser, beskrivna som integration under policy processer, som den här avhandlingen analyserar. Syftet är att studera om och hur integrerade regionala policyprocesser förekommer, hur de utvecklas samt deras betydelse för att åstadkomma ett hållbarare transportsystem. Detta undersöks genom kvalitativa fallstudier av två olika svenska regioner som representerar ett minst och ett mest troligt fall av integration av policy. Fallstudierna görs i regionerna Stockholms län och Västra Götalands län. Dessa två fall representerar dessutom två helt olika typer av regionala organisationer, vilket gör att de utgör underlag till, inte bara en diskussion om hållbara transporter, utan också om utvecklingen av den svenska regionala förvaltningsnivån. För analys används teori kring integration av policy och tre huvudsakliga analytiska begreppsansatser: policylogiker, organisationsidentiteter och gränsobjekt. Resultaten presenteras i fyra separata artiklar och dessa diskuteras tillsammans i den inledande kappan. I studien konstateras att integration av policysektorer och förvaltningsnivåer inte nödvändigtvis leder till transportlösningar som är mer hållbara. Beslut om en gemensam policy över sektorer och nivåer riskerar bli urvattnad eftersom det är många aktörer som ska komma överens. Samverkan för att samordna olika mål och intressen visar sig i huvudsak vara viktigt för att styra mot ett hållbart transportsystem, men det innebär inte att gemensam policy bör vara målet. Därutöver belyser studien hur olika organisationsformer på regional nivå påverkar regionala beslutsprocesser och hanteringen av hållbar transportutveckling.

The study purpose is to advance implementation of sustainable development at colleges, and to contribute to organizational change research using social network analysis. The researcher conducted document analysis using 2012-2016 sustainability reports of 16 purposefully selected two-year colleges under a common framework. Interpreting and coding resulted in ranking sustainable development activities as well as grouping colleges using cluster analysis. A survey and interviews were employed by the researcher to determine major themes as challenges to sustainability implementation, and personal network themes using social network analysis measures and sociograms. Challenges to sustainability implementation identified as study themes were: (1) college leadership transition; (2) communication networks; and (3) sustainability funding and resources. Personal network themes based on network analysis were: (1) sustainability leadership typologies; (2) network communication bridges and cliques; and (3) social capital for sustainability funding and resources. The research found personal egocentric network techniques an effective methodology in identifying attributes of communication links to inform transformational leaders implementing innovation. Study implications are that sustainability leaders within informal networks of staff, administrators, and faculty influence and actively participate in innovation diffusion. Faculty and staff work on specific projects and activities advancing sustainability such as community gardens or working with environmental groups, and administrator support provides social capital in terms of funding and resources. Striking the right balance among types and communication ties is a challenge for transformational leaders. Personal network techniques help leaders recognize organic network cliques and bridges during implementation stages, allowing for informed support and advancement of college sustainability. From this study, sustainability practitioners may be interested in using sustainability activity frequencies for planning and sharing with other colleges, as well as using personal network techniques to develop sociograms identifying important network positions, cliques, and bridges for sustainability implementation.

This thesis uses action research to investigate the organizational factors which are affecting the implementation of local agenda 21, and the accompanying necessary internal changes, in a local authority. Following an examination of literature relating to sustainable development and local agenda 21, organizational culture and attempts to change it are identified as the important areas to be investigated. There is an examination of theory in those areas and a two-stage study is carried out. This allows for the first stage study to be assessed and any gaps, where the research questions are not being answered, to be identified and dealt with in the second stage study. It was found that in local authorities there are sub-cultures, and that the split is along departmental lines, which affect the facilitation of sustainable development to differing degrees. Socially based departments had sub-cultures which were less appropriate for sustainable development then environmentally based ones. The local authorities were making changes of a structural and strategic nature, but as regards human processes, it was found that although authorities were concentrating on trying to raise awareness, the strategies they were using for this were ineffective. Two case studies were also conducted, one of a local authority similar in many ways to the one in the main study and the other of a dissimilar one, to assess whether the findings from the main study might be more generally applicable. The findings from these case studies suggested that the findings were generally applicable.

Poor waste management is a major issue in Moldova today, why work has been made in several areas to resolve waste problems. Still, there is no organized form of sustainable waste management. In case of implementation of such a system, the citizens must know how to use the system and be aware of the consequences that are caused by poor waste management. As a part of this, waste management education in schools has an important role. Therefore this study seeks the relation between waste management and waste management education in schools in Chisinau and also how the conditions in society affect the waste management and waste management education. Based on this, some efforts regarding how waste management in schools can become more sustainable are described.Literature studies showed that an integrative whole-school approach regarding sustainability is a good approach for encouraging action competence in environmental problems, including waste management issues. In order to study the current conditions regarding waste management education and school waste management, four schools in Chisinau were visited where observations and interviews were made. Interviews were also made with some relevant authorities and organizations to complement collected information from school visits. Field studies showed that even though environmental education in Moldova to some extent has been implemented with an interdisciplinary strategy, there are several barriers that affect the effectiveness of this strategy. In addition, waste related problems were blamed on society rather than an insufficient waste management education in schools.The conclusion of the study is that a whole-school concept may be implemented in schools in Chisinau in order to make school waste management more sustainable. This way waste management is taught informally as part of the school environment. To implement this concept, internal and external effortswithin the areas school organization, equipment and education are suggested. A more extensive approach on educational improvements necessary for the concept’s effectiveness will be described in another study on the same topic performed by Julia Skagerberg.
Bristfällig avfallshantering är ett stort problem i Moldavien idag. Åtgärder har gjorts inom flera områden för att nå en lösning på avfallsproblem relaterade till detta, dock finns det fortfarande ingen organiserad form av hållbar avfallsantering. Utifall ett sådant system implementeras så behöver invånarna veta hur de använder systemet. De behöver också vara medvetna om de konsekvenser som orsakas av bristfällig avfallshantering. I detta har utbildningen om avfallshantering i skolor en viktig roll. Den här studien söker relationen mellan avfallshantering och utbildning om avfallshantering i skolor i Chisinau och även hur samhällets förutsättningar påverkar avfallshantering och utbildning om avfallshantering. Baserat på detta ges några förslag på åtgärder som kan bidra till att avfallshanteringen i skolorna i Chisinau kan bli mer hållbar.Litteraturstudierna visade att utbildning om hållbar utveckling bör integreras genom en helskolsmodell för att studenter ska få utveckla handlingskraft gällande miljöproblem, inklusive avfallshanteringsproblem. För att studera de nuvarande förutsättningarna gällande avfallshantering samt utbildning om avfallshantering i skolor så besöktes fyra skolor i Chisinau, där observationer och intervjuer gjordes. Intervjuer gjordes också med några relevanta myndigheter och organisationer för att komplettera den insamlade informationen från skolbesöken. Fältstudierna visade att även om miljöutbildning i Moldavien till viss del har implementerats med en ämnesöverskridande strategi, så finns det ett flertal faktorer som påverkar strategins verkan. Samtidigt så beskylldes avfallsrelateradeproblemen ofta på samhället snarare än på en bristfällig utbildning om miljö och avfallshantering.Studiens slutsats är att en helskolsmodell kan implementeras i skolor i Chisinau för att göra avfallshanteringen mer hållbar. Genom detta kan avfallshantering läras ut informellt, som en del av skolmiljön. För att implementera denna modell föreslås några åtgårder inom områdena skolorganisation, utrustning och utbildning. En mer utförlig redogörelse för nödvändiga utbildningsmässiga förbättringar, som krävs för att modellen ska fungera optimalt, kommer beskrivas i en annan studie på samma ämne utförd av Julia Skagerberg.

This thesis is an account of research at two levels of inquiry. At the context-level, it is concerned with advancing theoretical understanding of the challenges to progressing Sustainable Development (SD) in NHS organizations. Previously these had been described as comprising i) lack of organizational support afforded to SD, ii) difficulties in prioritising and evaluating the impacts of SD initiatives, and iii) a dominance of working arrangements inappropriate for dealing with the cross-departmental and inter-organizational nature of SD. At the meta-level, it is concerned with advancing theoretical understanding of an Action Research (AR) approach to addressing such challenges in their context. It seeks to contribute to emerging frameworks which define a co-operative relationship between practitioners as active participants in their own solutions to organizational change for SD, and outside academics as facilitators of appropriate learning processes to support this. I engaged in two phases of research to address both these levels of inquiry. In Phase 1, I developed a theoretical understanding of the challenges of NHS SD through fifteen semi-structured interviews with practitioners and policy makers leading initiatives for SD in the NHS. In Phase 2, I used this contextual theory to inform an AR approach to progressing SD in one NHS organization. In this process, I facilitated cycles of action and reflection with a group of five senior managers over a twelve month period, in order to develop their organization’s SD strategy. Both Phases revealed the constraints practitioners face in developing SD beyond a narrow resource efficiency agenda. AR holds potential for developing broader interpretations through the integration of SD theory into organizational learning process. However, such an endeavour is beyond the scope of a single AR project and must be viewed as an ongoing relationship between academics and practitioners, as well as other actors of influence from across the health system.

This study presents results to be contributed to the field of Environmental Education. It is a new arena for qualifications development and implementation in the South African Education and Training system. The study is located in the context of a joint research programme focusing on understanding issues of articulation and learning pathways development for sustainable development, established between the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in partnership with Rhodes University, Environmental Learning Research Centre (ELRC). Phase 1 of the SAQA/ELRC research showed that researching workplace learning requires an understanding of learning pathways, if it is to be meaningful. It is for this reason that this research in phase 2 focuses specifically on learning pathways in the context of a local municipality in Makana. Using a case study research approach and qualitative data, this study investigated learning pathways for three occupational categories at different levels in the Makana Municipality: 1) key managerial occupations; 2) key supervisory occupations; and 3) key workers occupations relevant to sustainable development and how they are shaped and experienced. It also identified system and structural factors influencing articulation and access issues relevant to progress in learning pathways relevant to these key occupations. The study was designed using a case study research. Primarily, qualitative research techniques were employed to generate data, including observations, interviews and document analysis. The study used inductive, abductive and retroductive modes of inference to interpret and analyse data, using critical realist and systems perspectives. The findings on worker learning pathways show that there is a discrepancy between the Training Policy and the Environmental Training and Education Strategy of Makana Municipality. The issue of complexity in learning pathways and social structural factors such as inequality emerged as factors that strongly influenced learning pathways for workers. Learning pathways for workers involved in sustainable development practices hardly existed or simply did not exist. Interesting transitions associated with learning pathways such as from home, to work or no schooling in the case of the workers, showed a pattern of emergence. These showed that learning pathways are not accessible and equally available to everyone as can often erroneously be assumed. The findings on supervisor learning pathways show diverse complexities as well as related issues, when compared to the worker’s learning pathways. Issues such as overlapping of study and work emerge as influential to supervisor learning pathways. Lack of support is, however, an influencing factor, but in a different context compared to the workers, and mainly focuses on lack of bursaries, highlighting training policy issues. This aspect was found to also relate to lack of proper resources in order to enable them to learn and do their job better; an issue raised by the workers too. This challenge of lack of support in various forms posed a barrier to learning pathways. Findings related to the manager’s learning pathways show a noticeable gap between the workers, supervisors and managers. The manager’s generally have higher education qualifications related to sustainable development, and in certain cases managers have had exposure to international training related to sustainable development. Factors such as ample opportunities for learning, mentoring, association on professional bodies, and decision making powers influenced the manager’s learning pathways. It was also notable that while managers receive occupationally directed training, it is not necessarily sustainable development related. In theory, the results highlighted a need to understand systems as a whole and how their integration is important in influencing learning pathways. There were also underlying mechanisms and structures identified which needed to be unravelled and understood as these were found to influence learning pathways in this study. The study highlighted critical insights in understanding how learning pathways in a local municipality context (the case of Makana Municipality) are constructed by both systems and structural factors in the workplace, while also identifying ways in which agency of those engaged in learning for sustainable development in workplaces is enabled and /or constrained by such factors. It also showed the persistence of deep-seated inequalities of opportunity, especially for workers, to access and participate in sustainable development learning pathways.

Organisations increasingly operate in an environment of continuous change and turbulence which places new demands on the choice of business and supportive strategies relevant not only to the sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) of the particular organisation, but also countries and the global nature in which they operate. A business-level strategy is to a large extent vested in intangible resources, specifically human resources strategy and capital, including the capabilities embodied in a productive and skilled workforce. In Africa, and South Africa in particular, there is a shortage of a workforce of such a nature. This is amongst others the result of past inequalities but also of shortcomings in current training practices in both the private and public sectors. One way to improve workforce output is though appropriate training aimed at increasing job-specific knowledge and the concomitant skills and productive behaviour. Changes and turbulence in the environment, therefore also create different challenges to training strategies and practices, with a shift from all-at-once to ongoing training with verifiable learning. In this regard instructional design (ID) models are deemed intrinsic to training strategy. In this dissertation an ID model within a particular contextualised situation is offered that broadens, deepens and extends existing ID models by positioning it within business-level strategy and by utilising a multidisciplinary approach pertinent to the new demands on training. To serve as a test-bed for the ID model it is implemented in a case organisation. The aim of the research is to evaluate the impact, based upon action standards, of the ID model on job-specific knowledge and productive behaviour and to provide an explanation of the internal construct relationships of the ID model. The purpose of the research is exploratory and interpretive, culminating in the single-case study tactic, wherein both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The case organisation is considered to be representative of a certain type of organisation with comparable characteristics. Where the existing literature supports the results (as in this instance), inductive generalisation facilitates the transferability and exportability of the ID model to other organisations. Results reveal a positive reaction to the ID model and a measurable increase in job-specific knowledge and concomitant productive behaviour. It is considered to be preferable over more traditional training practices. The relationships between the internal constructs of the ID model and improved job-specific knowledge and productive behaviour are seen to be facilitated by the combination and interplay of the components of the ID model. The contribution of this research is in providing and evaluating an ID model aimed at addressing the previous shortcomings in training and ID models and the application thereof in practice. Thus, the significance of the study lies in its extension of existing literature on ID models and specifically their contribution to sustainable competitive advantage, i.e. an academic theoretical contribution that extends the current body of knowledge. Particularly in its South African and African context, given the background of shortages in skills and productive behaviour and the need for fast-tracking the development of a competent workforce, the study is significant in that it provides guidelines for the practical development and implementation of a new ID model. The study makes recommendations to enhance both the formulation of the theoretical ID model as well as its practical implementation. It furthermore recommends extended research to explore the possibility of exporting the ID model to a broader range of private sector organisations as well as its possible transferability to public sector organisations.

One of the reasons, why it is difficult to implement the concept of social sustainability into organizations, is its inherent complexity and vagueness. The new Social Sustainability Principles (SSPs) within the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) offer a clear definition of success for the social system. This study aims to put the new SSPs into an organizational context. It investigates how people-related issues within organizations, discussed in six organizational and management journals, published between 2009 and 2014, are related to the SSPs. One fourth of the 3305 reviewed articles were found to relate to social sustainability. Most of the articles focused on improving performance through aspects related to social sustainability. The articles mainly discussed aspects related to barriers to the SSPs as problems, solutions or positive aspects that could remove barriers to the SSPs. The results show that for organizational research to be able to support organizations moving towards social sustainability, there is a need for a clear definition of success as well as a frame that takes the whole social system into consideration. The FSSD and the SSPs could help to structure the diverse topics, put research problems in a bigger context and discern relevant problems and solutions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This assignment tries to provide insight into the reasons required for the formulation of sustainability performance indicators. It develops two sets of performance indicators for government and business respectively, to be used in an attempt to create a sustainable South Africa. It is approached in a very distinctive manner with two specific focus areas. Firstly, it examines the requirements of government, as this allows for the creation of a foundation upon which business can prosper, and examines the requirements with which to create this foundation. Secondly, once a sound foundation is laid, this paper examines the requirements of business that is believed to provide guidelines for shaping their sustainability. All this is done against a backdrop of the principles of good governance endorsed both internationally and in South Africa.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores how to bring about change through innovation by using current power structures to move towards a more sustainable society. The type of change we are concerned with is the transformation from social structures, economic systems and institutions which diminish natural resources; to systems of production, institutions and social structures which affirm and interact productively with living systems, assuring their own sustainability. This change cannot be limited to address the social, environmental and economic consequences of the current system but should redefine the basic principles of society’s design and operation. One of the key actors in the current system are Multinational Corporations (MNCs) which have the capacity to mobilize natural resources, labour, and financial capital at a global scale. It is defined that to contribute proactively towards sustainability, the role of the corporation is to innovate in its core business, creating products and services that help to solve the current un-sustainability patterns of society. However, how effective are targeted innovation platforms within MNC’s in designing and implementing meaningful innovations for sustainability? How meaningful are these innovation efforts in terms of the broader CSR strategy of the company and its sustainability performance? What can we learn from business innovation platforms in terms of organization and entrepreneurship for sustainability? In order to answer these questions an action research method was used in which I reflect on my own experience of using the innovation platform from the Royal Dutch Shell Group (Shell) to develop sustainability innovations. Within this perspective, the notion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is re-visited to highlight its potential to hinder or facilitate this process.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING:Hierdie tesis ondersoek hoe verandering met innovasie te weeg gebring kan word deur gebruikmaking van huidige magstrukture om sodoende te beweeg na ’n meer volhoubare gemeenskap. Die verandering waarmee ons gemoeid is, is die transformasie van sosiale strukture, ekonomiese stelsels en instansies - wat natuurlike hulpbronne verminder - na stelsels van produksie, asook instellings en sosiale strukture wat regstel en produktief wisselwerk met lewenskragtige stelsels om sodoende hulle eie volhoubaarheid te verseker. Hierdie verandering kan geensins beperk word om die sosiale, omgewings en ekonomiese gevolge van die huidige stelsel aan te spreek nie, maar behoort die basiese beginsels van die gemeenskap se ontwerp en optrede te herdefinieer. Een van die sleutelspelers in die huidige stelsel is die Multinasionale Korporasies (‘MNCs’) wat oor die vermoë beskik om natuurlike hulpbronne, arbeid en geldelike kapitaal op globale skaal te mobiliseer. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo propor uma Matriz de análise das inter-relações entre o desenvolvimento sustentável e as competências organizacionais. Esta matriz sintetiza o Método de Análise defendido pelo presente estudo. Por conseguinte, foi necessário identificar metodologias e parâmetros para avaliar o inter-relacionamento dos temas propostos, por meio de ampla pesquisa bibliográfica e análise documental, para se efetivar a construção da Matriz, o que possibilitou sua aplicação em um estudo de caso. Quanto à metodologia, a abordagem configura-se como uma pesquisa exploratória, pois faz uso da Análise de Conteúdo nos Relatórios de sustentabilidade e Questionários ISE de uma das empresas brasileiras mais sustentáveis, conforme a revista Corporate Knights – a empresa Natura. Ao aplicar o método desenvolvido por este trabalho, na análise do discurso corporativo contido nos documentos da empresa pesquisada, foi possível identificar suas competências essenciais, as principais capacidades-chave, além de elencar seus recursos estratégicos sustentáveis. Como resultado deste estudo, por meio da aplicação deste método foi possível identificar que as competências essenciais da Natura são: a sua singular Rede de Relações, seus Produtos e Conceitos e, principalmente, a sua Forma de Gestão pautada nos princípios do Triple Bottom Line (TBL). Essas competências asseguram à empresa pesquisada vantagem competitiva, com retornos acima da média, se comparada com a concorrência. Finalmente, depreende-se que a principal contribuição deste trabalho seja a estruturação de um Método de Análise, original na literatura, que inter-relaciona as competências organizacionais com o desenvolvimento sustentável nas empresas.
This research has as its goal to propose a Matrix of interrelationship analysis between the sustainable development and the organizational competences. This matrix comprises the Analysis Method defended by the present study. Thus, it was necessary to identify methodologies and parameters to evaluate the interrelationship of the proposed themes, through a broad bibliographical research and document analysis, in order to build the Matrix, which allowed its application as a case study. As for the methodology, the approach is presented as an exploratory research, since it uses the Content Analysis in Reports of sustainability, and ISE Surveys of one of the most sustainable Brazilian companies, according to the Corporate Knights magazine – the Natura Company. By applying the method developed in this text, in the analysis of the corporate speech in the documents of the researched company, it was possible to identify its core competences, its main key competences, as well as to enumerate its strategically sustainable resources. As a result of this study, through the application of this method it was possible to identify that the core competences of the Natura Company are: its singular Relationship Network, its Products and Concepts and, mainly, its Management Style guided by the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) principles. These competences assure the researched company a competitive edge, with returns above average, if compared to the competition. Finally, it is inferred that the main contribution of this work is the structuring of an Analysis Method, original in the literature, which interrelates the organizational competences with the sustainable development in the companies.

Dabar reikalingas iš esmės naujas strateginis požiūris į mus supančią aplinką, mokslo ir technikos pažangą, įvairių kultūrų ir tradicijų integraciją ir tolesnę ekonomikos raidą, naują ekonominio augimo tikslų sampratą. Nors subalansuotai plėtrai mokslas skiria vis daugiau dėmesio, tačiau šios teorijos vis dar yra embrioninėje stadijoje, o jų praktinis pritaikymas yra dar problematiškas. Remiantis Lietuvos ir užsienio autorių darbų apie darnią (subalansuotą) plėtrą analize bei išanalizavus įmonių galimas strategijas, darbe siūloma nauja strateginė pažiūra į subalansuotą plėtrą. Darni (subalansuota plėtra) – tai ilgalaikė, stabili ekonomikos ir visuomenės plėtra, derinanti ekonominį, ekologinį, socialinį, organizacinį-vadybinį ir etinį aspektus. Darbe pasiūlytas inovatyvus subalansuotos plėtros modelis, atitinkantis šiuolaikines strateginio valdymo koncepcijas.
Conceptions of the economical development which legitimates or even promotes ecological destabilization, social inequality currently are not able to supply the humanity. It is required new strategical attitude towards our environment, academical and technological progress, towards the integration of the culture and traditions, the further economical development, towards understanding the under point of the economical development now. Though the education increasingly pays attentions to sustainable development however these theories are not finished and their practical use is still problematical. In accordance with the analysis of the work of Lithuania and foreign authors about sustainable development and after the analysing possible strategies of the companies the new attitude towards the sustainable development is offered. Sustainable development is permanent, stabilized development of the economics and society which coordinates economical, ecological, social, organizational-managemental, business and leading ethics dimensions. At work there is offered innovational sustainable development model which corresponds to the modern conceptions of the strategical management.

COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
Realizei uma pesquisa empírica - conceitual reflexiva junto aos docentes de duas escolas particulares de graduação em administração e marketing, fundadas há 50 e 20 anos respectivamente para responder como e por quê acontece mudança organizacional através da aprendizagem coletiva docente em instituições de ensino superior privado (IESPr) de administração e marketing? Desenhei a pesquisa como um estudo de caso instrumental qualitativo onde realizei observação participante completa, entrevistas em profundidade e pesquisa documental. Para tanto, me integrei por três anos ao corpo docente de cada escola para acompanhar em profundidade o cotidiano do trabalho docente em duas IESPr Os dados de campo foram conceitualmente sistematizados interpretativamente em quatro níveis de acordo com a metodologia reflexiva de Alvesson & Sköldberg que incluiu análise metateórica e triangulação multiparadigmática dos estudos sobre processos de aprendizagem coletiva docente. Deste modo pude aprofundar empírica e conceitualmente na complexidade das dinâmicas sob estudo, explicitando-lhes uma configuração onde dimensões de emocionalidade e poder co-evoluem em permanente tensão com a de racionalidade. As implicações deste conhecimento sobre microprocessos de mudança e aprendizagem dizem respeito da natureza da mudança e da aprendizagem grupal e organizacional. Três resultados foram alcançados: acadêmicos, práticos para a gestão em IESPr e para a pesquisadora.
An empirical - conceptual reflexive research from within was accomplished aiming at investigating how and why organizational change and learning occurs through teacher`s collective learning and change at two 50 and 20 years old Management and Marketing Business Schools It was designed as a qualitative instrumental case study where complete participant observation, semi-structured interviews and documental research were developed. For this reason the researcher joined to the teacher`s staff at both business schools for a three years period in order to gain deep understanding about teacher`s work daily practices focusing its change and learning dynamics. Field data were interpretatively processed within four- level analysis according to Alvesson & Sköldberg`s reflexive methodology. Therefore metatheoretical analysis and multiparadigmatic triangulation of the developed knowledge on collective learning and change processes was included. In this way micro processes under study could be comprehensively understood in its dynamics complexity and configured as emotionality and power dimensions coexisting inextricably connected to rationality in a coevolving permanent tension. Micro processes` knowledge implications are related to organizational and group change and learning nature. Three results were accomplished: academic ones, practical ones for business schools management and for researcher`s own knowledge.

Why do some large organizations succeed during transformations and others do not? This thesis aims to contribute and expand the discussion of how product development capabilities could enable success during transformations. To investigate the problem, a qualitative case study was performed at a large transport and truck incumbent, Scania CV AB. The transport and truck industry is currently pressured to transform, both from a competitive and sustainability perspective. In order to become more adaptable to change, the thesis identified the importance of clearly applying ambidexterity as a strategy to cope with challenges that the transformation implies. However, when applying ambidexterity, interface challenges between exploitation and exploration occur. Success during transformations is mainly dependent on the management to handle those interface challenges properly. This thesis identified two main managerial practices that could benefit incumbents in the transport and truck industry to become more adaptable during a transformation phase. Firstly, a clear strategy of how to manage innovations over time could support large incumbents to leverage innovations for optimal experimentation, scalability, and later profit. Secondly, clear organizational alignment between functions to enhance communication and prioritization especially between exploitative and explorative business activities could support large incumbents to leverage radical innovations within the organization. This thesis argues that implementing structural ambidexterity combined with a clear and streamlined innovation transfer process in three distinct horizons for mature, growth, and future businesses will increase adaptability during transformation pressure. As the main area of future research, this thesis proposes to further investigate the opportunities of an open innovation strategy that leverages partnerships for co-creation in an increasingly interconnected transport ecosystem.
Hur kommer det sig att vissa företag lyckas under industriell förändring och andra inte? Syftet med denna uppsats är att bidra till, och utvidga, diskussionen om hur kapabiliteter inom produktutveckling kan främja en lyckad transformation. För att undersöka problemet genomfördes en kvalitativ fallstudie på ett etablerat företag inom transport och lastbilsindustrin, Scania CV AB. Transportindustrin är för närvarande under stor press, både från ett konkurrens- och hållbarhetsperspektiv. Denna studie visar att, för att bli mer adaptiv och hantera förändring, är det av yttersta vikt att implementera en tydlig strategi för en tvehänt (ambidextrous) organisation. En av de största utmaningarna vid en sådan implementation är dock de starka spänningar som uppstår i gränssnitten mellan det operationella och det utforskande inom organisationen. Hur de hanterar dessa utmaningar från ett ledarskapsperspektiv, kommer därav vara en av de främsta faktorerna till om företaget lyckas anpassa sig till förändring. I studien har två grundläggande principer för ledarskap identifierats, vilka kan hjälpa etablerade företag inom transport- och lastbilsindustrin att bli mer adaptiva under förändring. För det första, en tydlig strategi för att hantera innovation över tid, kan stötta ett etablerat företag att optimera innovation, skalbarhet och vinst. För det andra, en tydlig organisations- och ledarskapsinriktning som lyfter kommunikation och underlättar prioritering mellan förvaltande och utforskande aktiviteter och avdelningar. Denna studie argumenterar för strukturell separering av organisationen, kombinerat med en process för att överföra innovationer. Detta kan åstadkommas genom en uppdelning på tre horisonter; mognad, tillväxt och framtid, vilket kommer att öka företagets anpassningsförmåga under förändring. Denna studie har avgränsats till att inte närmare undersöka hur partnerskap kan hanteras i det allt mer sammankopplade transportsystemet. Detta är dock identifierat som ett möjligt behov av att närmare undersöka hur strategier för open innovation kan främja partnerskap och samproduktion inom området.

This thesis attempts to formally connect the fields of sustainability and responsibility. It considers first the larger context of business sustainability and responsible leadership, and evaluates the value and need for a common transformative space for these fields and what such a space might look like. As such, the thesis investigates the relation between sustainability and responsibility from an organizational and personal development perspective. This developmental perspective emerges from research in the domain of business education and the role of business schools in terms of educating responsible leaders for a sustainable world. The research suggests a concrete approach, the ‘Collaboratory’ for such a common space of transformation and critically evaluates its effectiveness to develop responsible leaders. The key contribution of this thesis lies in the interconnection of two fast evolving fields of research: the development of responsible leadership and business sustainability, providing a model for practitioners and scholars to reflect on and debate the larger forces and dynamics at play. Most research to date has focused on considering personal and organizational transformation separately. On the one hand, research scholars have studied effective learning environments to enable responsible leadership, and on the other hand, we have studied if and how organizations can advance from their current mode of operations to become “truly sustainable”. The thesis contributes a model to describe the interdependency of these two, and proposes the ‘Collaboratory’ as a means to realize this interdependency in practice. Chapter 1 is a new article theorizing the whole argument; subsequent chapters are previously published articles in these inter-connected fields and addressing methods and approaches to connect personal and organization development, drawing from a body of literature that considers the human spirit in large social change; and using the ‘Collaboratory’ as an illustrative and timely example for such methods.

En snabb förändringstakt på arbetsmarknaden sätter högre krav på medarbetarnas kunskap och lärande. Trots detta koncentrerar sig flertalet organisationer idag på de lukrativa vinsterna, vilket skapar sämre förutsättningar för arbetsplatsens grupplärande. Syftet var att utöka kunskapen om medarbetarnas upplevelser av betydelsen arbetsgruppen för lärandeprocesser i relation till organisationsförändring och ett hållbart perspektiv. Studien har en hermeneutisk ansats för att för att kunna tolka och få en djupare förståelse för medarbetarnas upplevelser. Åtta respondenter hittades med hjälp av ett bekvämlighetsurval från respektive åtta olika organisationer. Både strukturerade och semistrukturerade intervjumetoder användes för att besvara frågeställning och syfte. De transkriberade materialet har kodats, analyserats och tolkats med stöd av Illeris (2006) lärandedimensioner i ett successivt samspel där delar och helhet ökat på förståelse för fenomenet. Studien visade på att det upplevs finnas en ambivalent syn bland respondenterna i att lära under förändring i organisationer idag. Detta styrs av individuella erfarenheter, hur medarbetarna upplever relationen och kommunikationen till sina kollegor samt i vilken grad stöd till lärande arbetsplatsen erbjuder.
A quick change in the labor market results in a higher demand on the employee’s knowledge and learning abilities. Despite this fact many organizations today focus on lucrative profits, which in turn create worse group learning conditions in the work places. The purpose of the this study was to expand on the knowledge of the employee´s experiences in regards to the importance of working groups for learning processes in relation to organizational change and sustainable perspective. The eight respondents were chosen through a convenience sampling, who then where interviewed with structural and semi structural interview methods. The transcribed interview material has been processed through categorizing, analyzing and interpretation in a successively manner including both parts and whole. The study shows that amongst the respondents there seem to be ambivalence towards learning within an organization that is changing today. This is driven by; individual experiences, by how the employee´s relationship and communication is towards each other but also by the level of support the working place provides towards learning.

En esta disertación de doctorado en tres capítulos principales, estudié un estudio analítico sobre la relación entre las prácticas de Green Supply Chain Management y el desempeño organizacional utilizando tres metodologías diferentes (análisis bibliométrico, estudio cualitativo y estudio cuantitativo). En el segundo capítulo, utilizando el análisis bibliométrico, revisé las tendencias en el mundo de la cadena de suministro verde. El tercer capítulo de esta tesis revisó cualitativamente en base al uso de entrevistas el nivel de implementación de la práctica de gestión de la cadena de suministro verde en los casos seleccionados y su influencia en el desempeño organizacional. Finalmente, mediante el uso de operadores OWA, este estudio propuso nuevos operadores para la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero.

This research explores how the web‘s collaborative potential can be harnessed strategically towards sustainability. With the success of web-scale collaborations such as Wikipedia and Linux in mind, we sought to understand how web-enabled collaborations could be used strategically, particularly to support innovation for sustainability. Building on Peter Gloor of MIT‘s research into collaborative innovation networks (COINs), a framework for collaborative organizational networks supporting innovation, we evaluated COINs‘ strategic potential for sustainability utilizing the framework for strategic sustainable development and the approach of backcasting. We found that COINs can provide a strategic and effective way to work towards sustainability because they harness collective intelligence towards innovation and support distributed working styles. Additionally they provide an organizational framework that supports socially sustainable modes of working. However, COINs can amplify the impact of unsustainable innovations, so a strong systems perspective based on principles of sustainability is required to use COINs strategically. The final product of this research is a set of recommendations for people considering utilizing COINs for sustainability.

The use of organizational strategies to meet the objectives of an organization is an ancient practice, which has military origin leaded by Sun Tzu and Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz and widespread in the business environment to maintain business competitiveness. Although there are many strategies at various levels, which could be addressed with much greater detail, the author chose to present some of them that might attract more interest and/or be more useful to managers, presenting some definitions of strategic management, where some relations are discussed with the concept of business strategy and its application for a federal public institution. The goal is to demonstrate its applicability in the implementation of public policies on regional development, based on the use of regional potentialities that can promote sustainable development of agribusiness from the Amazonian biodiversity. The Açaí, an Amazonian regional potentiality, is the case study presented in this study, which project was implemented by the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Zone - SUFRAMA, based on cooperative model, using organizational strategies.
A utilização de estratégias organizacionais para cumprir os objetivos de uma organização é uma prática antiga, de origem militar enunciada por Sun Tzu e o General prussiano Carl Von Clausewitz e disseminada no meio empresarial para manter a competitividade dos negócios. Embora existam muitas estratégias, de diferentes níveis, que poderiam ser abordadas com detalhamento bem maior, o autor optou por apresentar algumas delas que são mais próximas do interesse e/ou utilização dos gestores, apresentando alguns conceitos de gestão estratégica, onde são abordadas algumas relações com o conceito de estratégia empresarial e sua aplicação por uma Instituição Pública Federal. O objetivo é demonstrar sua aplicabilidade na implementação de políticas públicas de Desenvolvimento Regional, com base no aproveitamento das potencialidades regionais que promovam o desenvolvimento sustentável de agronegócios, decorrente da biodiversidade amazônica. O Açai, uma potencialidade regional da Amazônia é o estudo de caso, apresentado no presente estudo, cujo projeto foi implementado pela Superintendência da Zona Franca de Manaus SUFRAMA, com base no cooperativismo, utilizando-se de estratégias organizacionais.
