Tourism is revered for its ability to encourage development through the utilisation of ‘free’ natural and cultural resources. However, the benefits of tourism development are often accompanied by negative impacts which degrade the social and environmental context in which tourist interactions occur. This issue is particularly significant in national parks due to the challenges presented by their often opposing dual remit: conservation and recreational access. Sustainable tourism development has been recognised as a means of addressing this issue. However, to date, there has been a lack of research evaluating the understanding and application of sustainable tourism development within national parks. This research addresses this gap. A qualitative research strategy was adopted which utilised a multi-case study methodology involving the Yorkshire Dales and the New Forest. It employed a triangulated strategy which used primary and secondary data collection methods, adding credibility to the findings. The findings revealed that some stakeholders experienced difficulty in understanding the concept due to complex and ambiguous terminology. Consequently, the underlying principles were considered to be more significant. The meaning and operationalisation of the principles varied according to the contextually unique characteristics of destinations. Overall however, it was acknowledged that the concept should not be seen as an end-goal, but as an on-going process, with the principles embedded into planning and management processes if progress is to be achieved. This study culminates by presenting two models; the first is intended to facilitate an evaluation of the main elements affecting sustainable tourism development, namely, context, understanding and operationalisation. The second is intended for use by practitioners, to aid the identification of key principles and the elements of planning and management where these principles need to be embedded. Both models highlight the importance of contextual awareness and thus, further research is recommended to assess their relevance in other destinations.

Sustainable Development in simple term, according to the definition adopted at the World Council on Sustainable Development, is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.[1] In recent times, there have been growing concerns on the activities of the Petrochemical Industry towards the concept of Sustainable Development[21]. The reputation of the industry is at the lowest ebb, especially in Nigeria. Public concern is overwhelmingly focused on the environmental and social impact of the industry's products and processes. The local host communities of the industry are consistently at loggerheads with it. Sustainability of the industry is being threatened. The linkage between social and environmental drivers, general public perceptions, and the processes by which the industry is regulated are intertwined and lack of its proper management is currently threatening the industry. There is a general public mistrust about the sectoral performance of the industry in line with the principles and practice of Sustainable Development. This perhaps has a major impact on the industry's growth prospects as it directly influences or sets the context for its license to operate and grow, its ability to attract and retain the highest caliber of employees with the range of capabilities it needs, its ability to raise finance etc. The current effort of the industry in the area of Health, Environmental and Safety Management has not yielded the much desired result in the area of Sustainable Development. Hence there is need to expand the scope of the engagement of the industry towards the concept of Sustainable Development. Several literature references were reviewed in addition to consultation with key stakeholders both within the industry and the host community of the case study considered as part of the research. This research study aims to find means through which the industry can do a front end loading of the principles of Susta1nable Development into the business planning process of the petrochemical industry. The way forward for the industry to engage positively in sustainability arena is by engaging in strategies and alignment frameworks that will help the industry move to a point of active engagement and maturity. A number of common themes in relation to the achievement of sustainability within the industry arose out of the research carried out. These includes poor stakeholder engagement; lack of effective sectoral reporting mechanisms and active engagement in deploying relevant training modules on Sustainable Development, and the need for the promotion of Sustainable Development as a concept throughout the industry and its entire value chain. These themes are packaged as recommended future strategic direction for the industry.

With the emergence of the sustainable development paradigm in the 1980s and the growth of the travel industry it seemed inevitable that the two would coincide at one point or another. Emerging as a reaction to mass tourism and environmental destruction, sustainable tourism development is a combination of two main schools of thought; development theory and environmental sustainability. Once assumed to be a passing fad, two decades on the concept has gained widespread acceptance both within the academic circles and governments. Since the early 1990s, the sustainable tourism paradigm and its practical applicability has become the subject of much debate. Although it is widely acknowledged that sustainable tourism is impractical at macro level, it has long been thought that the principles of sustainable tourism development could be successfully applied at micro level. This thesis aims to contest this statement and demonstrate that small scale sustainable tourism development is just as unattainable. Drawing upon existing literature, it aims to weave together tourism and development theory and examine the links and discrepancies between the principles of sustainable tourism development and the wider framework of sustainable development. In doing so it reveals a number of fundamental weaknesses which undermine the viability of sustainable tourism development. In addition to examining the discrepancies and contradictions of the concept, the thesis also forms a link between the principles and practices of sustainable tourism development and a destinations area ‘life cycle’, thereby; providing a framework for its analysis. Using a sustainable tourism development cycle model (STDC), it will show how as a destination area passes through the various stages of tourism development it moves further away from the principles of sustainable development and consequently fails to meet the fundamental principles of sustainable development. Built upon and adapted from Butler’s (1980) ‘tourism area life cycle’ theory, the STDC model questions the sustainability of a tourism destination area and evaluates its progress in implementing the principles of sustainable tourism development as it evolves.

This research studies the eight principles of sustainability applied in Project Management. To be more precise the research fulfils four objectives which are: firstly, to review and identify key principles of sustainability in project management from existing literature; secondly, to adopt a multiple case study method to assess the applicability of the principles in project management; thirdly, to determine the barriers that impede certain principles to be applied in projects and the resulting trade-offs; and lastly, to refine the concept of sustainability in project management. The study adopts a subjectivist ontological viewpoint and an interpretivist epistemological outlook. The paper deductively studies the research question and adopts a qualitative mono-method research design, with a multiple case study strategy. The project case studies analysed belong to six different industries namely Pharmaceutical, Information Technology (IT), Automotive, Transportation, Furniture and Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). All case studies fulfil the criteria of being multinational organisations, operating in the private sector, having sustainability as a strategic pillar and projects executed in developed countries with a similar macroeconomic climate. The data has been collected through the semi-structured interview technique and examined using a thematic analysis. The results show that not all eight principles of sustainability are implemented in project management despite of multiple proactive endeavours of engaging in social and environmentally focused business practices. The two principles that show a limited applicability in project management are values and ethics as well as consuming income and not capital. The theoretical contribution of the research is realised through the first collective analysis of the eight principles of sustainability and their implementation in project management through empirical case studies. An additional contribution is through the selection of case studies from industries that have not been examined before. The practical implication of the research is to offer guidance to organisations on what principles they need to build their sustainability project management practices on and to point out the commonly faced barriers and trade-offs.

Due to the current high levels of urbanisation and the lingering effects of Apartheid, South African municipalities have experienced difficulties in planning for sustainability and more specifically sustainable community development. Sustainable community development is needed in order to achieve more integrated and sustainable towns and cities with an improved urban environment and a higher quality of life. Due to this sustainable community development is of particular relevance to South Africa. Although policies and legislation exist at international, national and local level, there is a lack of suitable planning instruments to guide sustainable community development. Tlokwe Local Municipality is researched as study area to test and develop planning instruments for sustainable community development. An assessment matrix of sustainability indicators is linked to Multi-criteria analysis (MCA) and applied to identify the themes and sub-themes applicable to sustainability in which intervention is required to improve the sustainability rating of the municipality. A Goal Assessment Matrix (GAM) approach is used to score and prioritise municipal projects, plans and strategies according to sustainable community development fundamentals. The top scoring projects are indicative of the achievement of sustainable community development goals and objectives. The result of the sustainability assessment is that the Tlokwe Local Municipality is considered to be relatively sustainable, performing overall better than the three spheres of government against which it was measured. Subsequent to the GAM assessment a lack of alignment between the sectoral plans was identified as well as the duplication of projects. The projects, plans and strategies of the municipality are found to not have been formulated with sustainable community development framework as a guiding goal. It is recommended that municipalities use the assessment matrix methods to determine its level of sustainability when developing respective sectoral plans (SDFs, ITPs, EMFs and IDPs). Areas in which there is a lack of sustainability are highlighted and can consequently be addressed through intervention strategies. Prioritising municipal projects, plans and strategies through the use of GAM identifies crucial projects that need special attention to ensure their successful implementation as this will largely aid sustainable community development. Both the assessment matrix method and the GAM approach are valuable planning instruments with which to achieve sustainable community development.

South Africa is a signatory to several agreements dealing with sustainable development. South Africa has also committed to meeting several Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). One of the biggest challenges facing South Africa, like many other countries, is to maintain a balance between the quest for economic growth and sustainable development. In pursuing economic success, it is often the case that insufficient time and effort are dedicated to determining whether the planned developments support sustainability principles. In some instances, developments may meet one or two sustainability principles whilst violating a number of others, potentially leading to undesirable social, economic or environmental consequences. Countries ought to ensure that projects they approve for development at local, provincial or national level are subjected to thorough scrutiny to ascertain that there is minimal violation of sustainable development principles. The development of the MyCiTi bus transport system in the City of Cape Town was assessed for its consideration of sustainable development principles during the implementation of the project. Several users and non-users of MyCiTi were interviewed regarding their experience and observation of MyCiTi’s development and roll-out relative to sustainable development principles. The results obtained are discussed in this study and the appropriate recommendations given.

Large-scale planning initiatives can present major long-term environmental and social consequences. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is one type of approach to integrating environmental considerations into many large-scale plans and programs, and was established in the European Union by Council Directive 2001/42/EC. Practical and theoretical limitations remain, and this research considers “How can SEA be carried out for plans and programs to better support strategic decision-making toward sustainability?” Information is compiled from an extensive literature review, interviews with SEA experts, and a case study SEA. An analysis is conducted around a framework for strategic sustainable development, based on backcasting from sustainability principles. Results indicate that SEA plays an important role in mitigating environmental impacts of planning, but also faces many weaknesses relative to a truly strategic approach to sustainable development. To help fill these gaps, generic recommendations are developed for SEA practice. Built on a principle-based definition of sustainability, they are relevant to any individual SEA situation. Hypothetical applications of the recommendations are illustrated with a case study. By adopting these recommendations, SEA practitioners can enable planners to better integrate strategic sustainable development into the decisions and upstream design of plans and programs.

Adopting a Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD) approach to official bilateral development assistance could result in more effective development planning that yields lasting results in developing countries. A Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development Assistance (FSSDA) based on SSD and customised to the needs of a development agency offers guidance in planning for development towards sustainability. This it does by directing donor and recipient planners in generating holistic perspectives, setting the goal of development as an attractive and sustainable society, and providing a flexible decision-making framework to guide strategic planning. Development assistance donor agencies face several difficulties in ensuring aid effectiveness. The FSSDA offers support in addressing these challenges by: positioning the creation of sustainable societies as the fundamental goal of development; allowing progress against imminent sustainability threats while minimizing the risk of unforeseen negative impacts; balancing economic, environmental and social considerations; and providing a fairer basis for aid conditionality.

Within the field of development cooperation policy coherence has received increasing attention. Definitions of policy coherence are elusive; from describing consistency between intention and outcome to describing synergies between and within different policy areas. Potential incoherence has been ascribed not only to potentially incongruent goals but also different frames, discourses and underlying values. This thesis uses the concept of worldviews to understand how coherence or incoherence can be discerned between and among the United Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and Swedish development cooperation policies from Sida, Swedfund and SEK. The conclusion indicates that there is potential dialectic tension between normative worldviews of corporatism and development framing of egalitarian elements. Coherence is found in the technocentric, prevailing worldview. Results indicate that coherence and subsequent policy implementation can be affected by underlying aspects and mechanisms beyond trade-offs and goal-conflicts.

Since the late 1980s, the terms of 'sustainable development' have been frequently referred to both in international environmental law instruments and in the doctrine. In spite of such references, however, sustainable development has remained poorly developed in terms of its meaning and of its practical and normative implications. This thesis purports to come out with a partial picture of what sustainable development means (or does not mean) in the restricted context of international environmental law. To do so, it will try to identify in which respect and how far sustainable development has influenced and has been reflected in the evolution of some selected principles of that law. Each principles is considered in an evolutionary perspective, from the time of its inception to the time of its 'association' to sustainable development.

Abstract: Given the global sustainability challenge; effective organizational Social Responsibility (SR) guidelines must set best-practices that acknowledge environmental constraints and strive for a sustainable society. SR has historically underrepresented environmental issues and needs to shift from a reactive focus on societal stakeholder demands, to a proactive whole-systems planning framework. There is a risk that unless SR guidelines consider both social and environmental issues together, they may generate negative outcomes to organizational viability. This research finds key Sustainable Development concepts that should be integrated within SR guidelines and uncovers an overall goal of SR as assisting organizations in moving towards a sustainable society. A Sustainable Society is defined in the research according to a set of scientific principles, based on environmental constraints and fundamental social needs. This clear goal enables the organization to ‘backcast’ from this success point in order to take effective strategic steps. The authors recommend the incorporation of critical concepts from Strategic Sustainable Development, a proven organizational sustainability planning framework, into SR guidelines to increase their effectiveness in strategic SR decision-making. The ISO 26000 SR Guideline is used as a case study.

The awareness of the unsustainable path we are heading and the pressing need to act has been growing for the last few decades. Organisations, in particular corporations, play an important role in the necessary changes and they are increasingly being obliged by a growing range of stakeholders to play a positive part in society as corporate citizens. This has led to the current proliferation of initiatives and standards on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and has created confusion and misunderstanding about what is a strategic corporate responsibility approach. We found that current CSR lacks principles of sustainability and a universal ethical guideline. This paper argues that current CSR can be made strategic by considering a scientifically relevant whole systems approach of sustainability as its fundamental objective. We present some implementation guidelines for CSR based on principles of sustainability and on the universal ethical principle of non-harm. Analysis of selected organisations in Brazil and Malaysia using the proposed guidelines provided recommendations and insights on how these organisations can contribute towards a sustainable society.

Electricity generation is both a major contributor to the root causes of environmental unsustainability and an energy source that will likely play an important role in the transition to a sustainable society. Because renewable sources of electricity generation are seen as sustainable as a group, there is a danger that investments will be made in renewable technologies that do not effectively move society towards sustainability. We propose the use of a scientific, principles-based definition of sustainability to compare current and future renewable electricity options on their sustainability potential. This study presents a pilot decision-support comparison tool, Guide for Sustainable Energy Decisions (GSED), designed to give investors, policy makers, and manufacturers strategic guidance on the most effective renewable technologies to invest in for sustainability. The tool is based on a modified version of life cycle assessment (LCA) that allows comparisons of the upstream and downstream effects of generation technologies from a whole-systems sustainability perspective. Early feedback by experts suggests that the tool has strong potential to serve as an effective comparison tool and help decision-makers make strategic investments for sustainability.

Sustainability provides the context within which local planning policies are now being prepared. In particular Agenda 21, as the means of giving real substance to sustainable development, suggested that there was a need to focus the process at a local level. This thesis attempts to explore and analyse the institutional (Greek State) response to local sustainable development and to investigate the progress of local authorities in Greece with the integration of sustainable development principles. Two contrasted case studies, one urban local authority and one coastal semi-rural local authority, were used to demonstrate the variety in the status of local sustainable development in Greece, whereas an example from the English practice offered a different approach to local planning enabling a better analysis of the Greek situation. The research design adopted for the case studies was primarily qualitative in approach and mainly used semi-structured interviews, document analysis and observation. The results from the research suggest that in Greece the authorities were lacking certain fundamental elements concerning the integration of sustainable development, although in some of them progress was apparent. In Greece the concept of sustainability is still new in local planning practice and the administration has not fully integrated it in its rules and procedures. This thesis does not undertake to fill that gap but to address some of the possible reasons for these failures and thus stimulate a debate around a range of possible solutions, setting an agenda for ongoing dialogue.

This briefing paper reports on research exploring ten detailed case studies of livelihoods-oriented interventions operating in Tanzania, Lesotho, South Africa and Uganda. Analysing these interventions through an audit of sustainable livelihood `principles¿ (as a proxy for best practice) revealed general lessons both about the practical opportunities and challenges for employing sustainable livelihoods approaches to the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development interventions and also about the changing format of development interventions.

Developments of commercial self-driving vehicle (SDV) technology has a potential for a paradigm shift in traffic control technology. Contrary to some previous research approaches, this research argues that, as any other technology, traffic control technology for SDVs should be developed having in mind improved quality of life through a sustainable developmental approach. Consequently, this research emphasizes upon the social perspective of sustainability, considering its neglect in the conventional control principles, and the importance of behavioral considerations for accurately predicting impacts upon economic or environmental factors. The premise is that traffic control technology can affect the distribution of advantages and disadvantages in a society, and thus it requires a framework of social justice. The framework of social justice is inspired by John Rawls' Theory of Justice as fairness, and tries to protect the inviolability of each user in a system. Consequently, the control objective is the distribution of delay per individual, considering for example that the effect of delay is not the same if a person is traveling to a grocery store as opposed to traveling to a hospital. The notion of social justice is developed as a priority system, with end-user responsibility, where user is able to assign a specific Priority Level for each individual trip with SDV. Selected Priority Level is used to determine the right-of-way for each self-driving vehicle at an intersection. As a supporting mechanism to the priority system, there is a structure of non-monetary Priority Credits. Rules for using Priority Credits are determined using knowledge from social science research and through empirical evaluation using surveys, interviews, and web-based experiment. In the physical space, the intersection control principle is developed as hierarchical self-organization, utilizing communication, sensing, and in-vehicle technological capabilities. This distributed control approach should enable robustness against failure, and scalability for future expansion. The control mechanism has been modeled as an agent-based system, allowing evaluation of effects upon safety and user delay. In conclusion, by reaching across multiple disciplines, this development provides the promise and the challenge for evolving SDV control technology. Future efforts for SDV technology development should continue to rely upon transparent public involvement and understanding of human decision-making.

This project was designed to aid community design professionals, specifically those professionals associated with "towns and cities that border public lands" (Howe, McMahon, Propst 1997), also known as gateway communities. Many of these towns have already begun a process of planning for future development, realizing the importance of conservation and preservation of their natural resources. By further expanding the goals and scope of town planning, this creative project intends to serve as a promotional resource and model of sustainable community design. More specifically, this creative project intends to provide Gatlinburg city officials with a conceptual master plan for the city's downtown corridor, instituting a combination of SmartCode and Smart Growth strategies with several other innovative strategies in an attempt to produce a sustainable design solution. If used as a guide for new planning and construction, this document should aid inmaintaining a lasting partnership between Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and preserve the Park as a viable natural resource. The solutions produced in this creative project aim to uphold a balance between human settlement and nature and which are environmentally responsible, socially just, and economically viable.Due to the magnitude of change required for many of the proposed development strategies, and to promote consideration for the equity of future generations, the conceptual master planning will be envisioned as a long-range build-out with suggested phasing. Working towards a sustainable goal far into the future will enable local gateway planning and design to become less reactive and promote a vision which the entire community can own.

Economic development brings about urbanisation which may result in rapid housing expansion. The health and well-being of communities is often not considered as a priority of urbanisation with the pressure for developing better economies. Sustainability principles in housing developments are perceived to be able to enhance and to improve the quality of living. The approach to sustainability can, however, be interpreted and prioritised differently. Many developing countries such as Malaysia are depending upon industrialisation for the development of their economies. Continuing urbanisation and industrialisation in these countries indirectly creates tensions between the need for a better built environment, and the push for economic growth. One specific phenomena in Malaysia is the introduction of the mixed-use urban neighbourhood, whereby residential development is netsled within the industrial establishments. On one hand, this helps to create job opportunities and improve the local economy. On the other, it creates concerns in the relations to the house planning, and to the well-being of the residents. These have potential exposures to industrial activities that are associated with environmental problems, such as, poor air quality, local temperature increases, and excessive noise levels. This research applied the current international trends of sustainability practices in housing development in searching for the most appropriate strategies for developing sustainable residential-industrial neighborhoods. Cross reference to other countries strategies and experiences can be adaptation for Malaysian conditions. A residential-industrial community in the city of Pasir Gudang Johor, Malaysia, has been selected as a case study in order to examine the perceived problems of indoor environmental quality in such environments. The result of a questionnaire survey and in-situ measurement indicates that they are facing indoor environmental problems. A set of recommendations for housing guidelines which are tailored for local Malaysians conditions have been identified, and have potential for improving the housing development guidelines and policies for mixed-use community living. Comprehensive strategies will need to be developed to achieve housing development sustainability goals. The development of Master Planned Communities (MPC's) is suggested to be appropriate mechanism to developing planning controls. This will ensure the improvement of indoor environmental quality of living in residential-industrial housing developments in Malaysia. It is anticipated that this research will make a positive contribution to developing decision-making procedures that are appropriate to achieving the goals of sustainable housing development in relation to mixed-used residential housing, It is also expected that this research will assist in establishment of a unified national sustainable housing strategy, and in the rationalised adoption of a master planned community approach.

The Sustainable Development Plan of the State of CearÃ, developed and implemented in 1995, introduced the concept of Sustainable Development (SD) on the likes of Cearà public policy and proposed that the basis of his training was participatory and democratic way, though there is, thus awakening to the practice of governance. It is known that the analysis of governance rests on the basis of the concept of SD therefore should be focused on the development of policy guidelines and standards aimed at all social actors in an attempt to mitigate and/or end social conflicts beyond to make conspicuous the active participation of people in decision making of the government. The World Bank considers governance as the government's ability to formulate and implement sound policies and effectively, then, propose s six principles for assessing Good Governance: Voice and Accountability, Political Stability and Absence of Violence/Terrorism, Government Effectiveness , Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law and Control of Corruption. In 2003, the Selo Municipio Verde Program of the State of Cearà (SMVP) was formulated and implemented in order to assign a public environmental certification that operationalizes the SD at the local level. Thus, the SMVP may hold instruments that enable a guarantee of Good Governance for sustainable development, promote the involvement of all stakeholders to mitigate conflicts of interest and enable the active participation of people in decision making of the government. In this context, the current research aims to analyze the level of implementation of the principles of Good Governance in public policies for sustainable development in Cearà with a view from the SMV P. Therefore, the research applied the Delphi method, and for better decision making to be pointed out, used the method of Multiple Criteria Decision Support âAnalysis of Hierarchy Process to calculate the Evaluation Index of Good Governance for SMVP. The results showed that after 11 years of implementation, the SMVP can be considered a tool that enables Good Governance for sustainable development in Cearà territory because, according to respondents, fifty four indicators targeted to the six principles are being put into practice. However, the inter-relate them, the survey found that SMVP has a regular Good Governance level. Of all the principles discussed, which contributes least to this index was the Control of Corruption and contributed most positively was the principle Rule of Law, reflecting that there is a strong legal apparatus to exercise Good Governancein the state of Cearà but should promote ways of controlling and combating corruption in an attempt to make the government more democratic and transparent. It should be noted that no principle has been rated with a level of Good Governance. Hence for SMVP, all indicators are subject to investment to achieve Good Governance for sustainable development preached by the World Bank. Finally, it is suggested to continue being developed and implemented public policies that affect effective popular participation in all levels of decision making, seeking thus the sustainability of development with more equitable world and to promote world peace.

According to Brunkhorst (2001) and Raeberg (1997), governments who are responsible for regional (territorial) planning are in effect planning blindly as they are not taking into account the brilliant work done in related fields which could change their attitude towards planning, design, ecology & technology. The global debates on scarce resources and climate change which are causing governments to have to take a stand, pose questions such as: How are Scarce Resources Managed? How will injustices to the poor be rectified? What policies and guidelines are in place to promote sustainability? The theory is out there, but little or no practical implementation of the theory at broad scale through fine scale has been done to date. To this end I have created a model which takes into consideration these global issues, and tested it on the SW Wildlife ecosystem of Botswana which has all the characteristics mentioned above. Lessons have been learned from failures in Implementation Strategies at Gudigwe (N Botswana) where insufficient planning for the needs and capabilities of the local villagers created a mismatch of the socio-economic product created and the outcomes anticipated. Another example of failure was the unanticipated social culture of the Baswara who take care of each other above the needs of outsiders. The guests and management were at odds with the staff due to these cultural differences at Mababe Village Sankuyo Trust, NW Botswana. The study will contribute a model of bioregional planning from broad to fine scale which can be used in the planning & design of such regions in the future. The macro biogeographic region is defined at the Broad Scale and at the Fine Scale appropriate socioeconomic sustainable interventions are detailed.

Human society is currently designed based on linear patterns, without concern for and interactions with the biosphere. The natural world works in cycles, and in order to interact with these systems in a sustainable way, the redesign of human society according to the paradigm of cyclical thinking is required. This paper explores the synthesis and synergies between the cradle-to-cradle concept and a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development in the context of sustainable development. The research tests whether Backcasting using Sustainability Principles is supportive to the implementation of the cradle-to-cradle concept and draws on relevant literature as well as interviews with experts. Based upon this research a process tool is designed and tested within a case study. Results indicate that, when backcasting using sustainability principles, principles for design and principles for decision-making provide synergistic characteristics in the process of implementation. Inspiring design principles, such as the ones suggested by the cradle-to-cradle concept, provide powerful engagement for a social learning process that works towards sustainable development. A structured decision-making process based on backcasting using sustainability principles provides the constraints and criteria for robust decision-making along the journey.

What is sustainable urban development and will it in the future be possible to plan urbanenvironments which have a positive impact on both nature and people, instead of negative? One of the basic principles of the design theory Cradle to Cradle is for us to actsustainable, rather than less unsustainable, but the theory is still relatively unexplored inspatial planning. In addition to examining Cradle to Cradle as a design theory for sustainable urban development, the purpose of this paper is that its findings and conclusions should serve astools for sustainable spatial planning. The paper also aims to inspire with innovative ideasand solutions in the built environment. The essay begins with a theoretically baseddiscussion of what may constitute normative principles for sustainable urban development. After an objective review of Cradle to Cradle Design, the theory is set in relationto these standards. The intentions of Cradle to Cradle are good but the main focus of the design theory todayis on ecological and economic sustainability and the important social aspect is notdeveloped. For realization of the visions of the theory, transferring to Cradle to Cradle, which stands for what we call ecological modernization, need to be accompanied by behavioralchange. A comprehensive behavior change requires a questioning of the standards, regarding for example production and consumption, that we live by today. Ecologicalmodernization in combination with normative principles of behavior change can thusbe a path to sustainable urban development. The analytical results of the essay are then transferred from theory to practice in the developmentarea Kilen in Ronneby, Sweden. The overall conceptual design the essay presents, gives examples of how it is possible to physically plan within the municipality ofRonneby's various focus areas - energy, water, biodiversity in the outdoor environmentand social diversity. While planning sustainable, it is also essential to make it easy and natural for people tolive sustainable. Civic participation in the planning process is an important component tomake an area like Kilen provide the added value that the municipality wishes, and to let itreflect the good intentions underlying the development. Designing an area using theprinciples of Cradle to Cradle may, at the right approach, represent an important step inthe sustainable urban development. Not least as a manifestation of good intentions, aplatform for innovation in ecological modernization, a pedagogical example, and a call tothe user and the viewer to also live sustainable.

This thesis explores how the Planetary Boundaries (PBs), as derived from the Planetary Boundary Framework (PBF), and the Sustainability Principles (SPs), as derived from the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), can be integrated. It presents and discusses how the PBs and SPs intersect and provide additive value, with the purpose to inform the development of strategic guidelines towards sustainability. Agriculture was used as a case context due to its significant contribution to the sustainability challenge. The methods include the development of a matrix, populated with agricultural contributions to SP violations and PB transgressions, and a series of qualitative interviews with sustainability experts to validate the matrix and provide further insight into how an integrated approach can be used in practice. Results show that intersects exist on both driver and impact levels, and that the matrix provides an enhanced understanding of the system. Researchers conclude that there are various benefits from integrating the SPs and PBs, including aspects such as easing communication, informing prioritisation of urgent issues, and the development of strategic transformation approaches. Integrating SPs and PBs provides an enhanced definition of sustainability, from which explicit goals, criteria and strategic guidelines can be developed towards solving the sustainability challenge.

EXECUTIVE
In recent decades, the relationship between humankind and the environment has grown stronger. Indeed, over time the concern and active participation of citizens in ecological and environmental issues is becoming more frequent worldwise, and more recently the link from those issues to social and economic issues is leading to a new paradigm called sustainability.
Accordingly, through this doctoral thesis the origin, evolution, and feasibility to operativize sustainability in the construction sector is studied.
The meaning of sustainability is different among the earth´s nations; nevertheless, there are some important common themes such as a concern for the environment and its resource limits and sink limits, and a concern for both inter and intrageneration equity. Thus, those common aspects had brought about that most sustainability definitions appeal to the goodwill so sufficient resources for future generations be left, in order for they having a quality of life similar to ours.
In this academic work the criteria from the main United Nations documents about sustainability has been adopted. A benchmark may thus be established by setting out the sustainability principles in order to approach them to the construction sector, dealing with new buildings specifically.
To approach sustainability principles for the construction sector, conceptualization and pragmatic (quite different) aspects must to be addressed in order to join them in a common task, taking into account the number of theoretical and empirical themes to deal with. The research and the thesis writing were organized on five linked parts, which make up thirteen chapters.
The first part (chapters I, II, and III) is the core of the thesis, because the methodology and the bottom line are set out in those chapters, and also because the origin, evolution, and the sustainable development debate are exposed.
The second part (chapters IV and V) relates to the technical items for sustainability such as Thermodynamics, the entropy law and the environment; and then these concepts and their relationship with energy and matter. It is to be stressed that these last items are the main raw materials for the construction sector.
This second part also contains tools and techniques to support sustainability, e.g. life-cycle assessment, multtiatribute decision analysis, the environmental impact assessment, sustainability indicators, ISO 14 000 standards, and life-cycle costs for building materials.
The previous parts provide enough knowledge and information for conducting a proposal to a more socially responsible construction sector through, the so called, sustainable construction. That is the core subject of the thesis, for which in the third part (chapters VI, VII, VIII and IX) the fundamental premises for sustainable construction are established, those premises stress the adverse environmental impacts from buildings to be tackled by sustainability principles related to resources conservation, minimizing waste through re-use and recycling materials, construction quality, nature protection, and indoor air quality.
The approach of sustainability to the construction sector is proposed from the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and deconstruction building phases. Selection of building materials, life-cycle of materials, and major environmental impacts as a result of buildings are highlighted in that third part.
The sustainable aspiration requires a benchmark in order to set out the measures to be taken in approaching sustainability. To support that process, the fourth part (chapters X, XI and XII) is orientated to support sustainability, even though that concept is not something that can be gauged in most cases, and whenever possible not necessarily would it be in a quantitative way.
To carry out such assessment, a real region and building case study were chosen. Then, a set of sustainabilty indicators was developed and the building materials selection in the

The final outcome is a proposed set of suggestions which any mentoring organization can use in order to help move society strategically towards sustainable development through its mentoring programs.

An examination of the stationary power sector is performed using The Natural Step framework and Sustainability Principles (SP), in order to aid decision makers in developing policy to balance energy needs while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in order to address climate change. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is evaluated for its sustainability aspects, and is found to be a potentially sustainable approach which can be a bridging technology to a more sustainable energy mix, as well as a remediation technology which can remove CO2 from the atmosphere when utilized in combination with biomass fuel. Initial actions for restructuring the stationary power sector should emphasise demand reduction and efficiency efforts, followed by switching to renewable energy sources. If the first two strategies can not provide sufficient CO2 reductions, then investments in CCS technology may be an appropriate choice. CCS with coal-fired power can be a means to decouple CO2 emissions from fossil fuel use, but other SP violations associated with coal use must also be fully addressed before this strategy can be considered a truly sustainable option.

Forests are key providers of terrestrial ecosystem services such as climate regulation, water purification, natural pest control, habitats for biodiversity, as well as different forms of wood based materials and food. Nevertheless forests are dangerously exposed to great pressures from various kinds of societal activities. This report examines the importance of forests for the (i) maintenance of life supporting functions of the biosphere as well as for (ii) providing a flexible resource base for the satisfying of human needs on more and more sustainability-driven markets. How can Swedish forestry be managed such that those two essential roles of forests become mutually supportive? The report also relates the results to three relevant and well-citied protocols for the subject: the Sustainable Development Goals in UN’s Agenda 2030, the Swedish Environmental Quality Objectives, and the Swedish National Forest Program. The approach applied Maxwell’s process design for qualitative research. Data have been collected from literature search and interviews of experts and the analytical instrument for modeling of data was the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). The report concludes: Sustainable development for forestry relies on a paradigm shift in civilization’s perception of forestry to a practice where planning departures from envisioning a future where natural forest functions to sustain higher life forms and civilization are safeguarded and prioritized before other usages of forestland, and where diversity is enhanced in terms of tree age and species to foster more resilient and high-quality timber forests. When the above points are achieved, the higher diversity of more resilient forests should also have potential to supply markets with various kinds of resources offered to more and more sustainability driven markets. Furthermore, this development of society’s forest use increases the chances for civilization to be sustainable also with relatively smaller forest areas put aside for no forestry at all. In such a situation forestry and society have prioritized forest products and usages with long life spans before such with short. A future sustainable Swedish forest sector has recognized the above, and drawn an essential conclusion from it: the interdependency of forests with society’s overall sustainability performance calls for a cooperative approach that departures from an understanding of basic sustainability principles that are shared across sectors and disciplines. The Sustainable Development Goals, the Swedish Environmental Objectives and the Swedish National Forest Program all fail to take the above broad- systems perspective when it comes to proposing measures for the future, including how to advise further research to explore what the sustainable Swedish forestry could entail. The study arrives at pointing out an overall approach to analyses, planning and further research in those regards, rather than evaluating details on the path towards sustainable forestry.
