From a sustainable development perspective, continuous industrial growth is an important issue. In recent years, it has become difficult for companies to survive in an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing business environment. To align with these changes, companies must not only rapidly transform their own organizations but also their current business domains. However, it is difficult for a leading company alone to transform existing business domains. While it is known that the transformation of a business area requires cooperation with partners, the mechanism of sustainable growth in existing business ecosystems is unclear. To solve this problem, this paper aims to unveil the role of transformation momentum in the business ecosystem in the IT (information technology) industry, which is rapidly changing from traditional IT services to cloud-based services. This study has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure as IoT case studies, as these cases have successfully transitioned from their original business domains to new ones. Based on these cases, we established a Sustainable Business Ecosystem Transformation (SBET) model for transforming industries using the business ecosystem’s dynamic capabilities. The SBET model demonstrates how transformation momentum can be created using business ecosystems in four phases (Exploration, Creation, Formation, and Mutation). The SBET model contributes to expanding the business ecosystem concept by adopting sustainable growth and accelerating transformations to enhance global IT business ecosystems. Using the model in this study, companies can achieve continuous growth not only in their own organizations but also in their partners in the wider business domain.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the ecosystem as an innovative business model. The use of modern business models is for many enterprises a driver for increasing competitiveness in a rapidly changing market environment, increasing market share and profits. The lack of an unambiguous, comprehensive definition of the concept of a business ecosystem and its unique principles that make it possible to identify this business model from others predetermined the purpose of this study. The purpose of the study is to identify and systematize the principles of functioning of business ecosystems that ensure the effectiveness of the use of current and projected ecosystems at domestic enterprises, including industrial ones. During the study, such economic definitions as system and ecosystem, business system and business model were analyzed. This made it possible to single out the universal and specific principles of the operation of business ecosystems as a whole, to form a system of principles for the functioning of a business ecosystem in industry to ensure the economic sustainability of industrial enterprises that are part of the ecosystem and increase the competitiveness of the industrial sector of the economy.

There have been many discussions about the business ecosystem in order to promote the sustainable growth of firms recently. Business ecosystems have developed independently from three perspectives: business, innovation, and the platform ecosystem. However, considering the emergence of advanced technology and social values, there is a growing need to look at business ecosystems from an integrated point of view. Based on a new win–win platform combining these discussions, we have designed and demonstrated a sustainable business innovation ecosystem (SBIE) framework. Using the triple helix model, data were collected from 290 experts—industry (95), government (100), and university (95)—in Korea. Results show that firms should consider social values as well as economic values when building a SBIE. The findings also emphasize that performances are more effective when core agents of ecosystem build a win–win platform using the fourth industrial revolution (FIR) technology.

The main problems of sustainable development of business ecosystems are considered. It is proved that promising business ecosystems need to master and use modern, including digital, technologies in managing the level of risk. The purpose of this study is to expand the types of tools that can be used to manage the risk level of failure to achieve sustainable development of business ecosystems. To study the problems of risk management and identify the characteristics of the risk phenomenon in the activities of business ecosystems, the methodology and applied tools of the system economic theory and the operational theory of risk management are used. It is shown that the management of risk of harm to the environment, in the social sphere, and development of anti-risk impacts, reducing the level of risk of not achieving the necessary quality of management, improve the investment attractiveness of economic agents, members of the business ecosystem. The realization research may be of interest to enterprises and organizations that are developing their own strategies for sustainable development within the framework of emerging business ecosystems, or developing their own strategy for choosing and joining some hypothetical business ecosystem.

Advances in information and communication technologies and, more specifically, in artificial intelligence resulted in more intelligent systems, which, in the business world, particularly in collaborative business ecosystems, can lead to a more streamlined, effective, and sustainable processes. Following the design science research method, this article presents a simulation model, which includes a performance assessment and influence mechanism to evaluate and influence the collaboration of the organisations in a business ecosystem. The establishment of adequate performance indicators to assess the organisations can act as an influencing factor of their behaviour, contributing to enhancing their performance and improving the ecosystem collaboration sustainability. As such, several scenarios are presented shaping the simulation model with actual data gathered from three IT industry organisations running in the same business ecosystem, assessed by a set of proposed performance indicators. The resulting outcomes show that the collaboration can be measured, and the organisations’ behaviour can be influenced by varying the weights of the performance indicators adopted by the CBE manager.

This article examines the role of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Kazakhstan as a key element for achieving sustainable economic growth and diversifying the economy. It analyzes existing international practices of successful ecosystems, such as Silicon Valley, Israel, and Singapore, to identify strategies applicable to the Kazakh context. The article discusses the main challenges faced by startups in the country, including reliance on raw materials, a lack of innovative sectors, and limited access to capital. Recommendations are presented for improving government support, developing startup infrastructure, and preparing qualified personnel, with an emphasis on the need to implement green technologies. The study highlights the importance of collaborative efforts among the government, private sector, and educational institutions to create a favorable entrepreneurial ecosystem that fosters innovative development and sustainable economic growth in Kazakhstan.

The purpose of the article is functional decomposition of the main stages of the algorithm of providing strategic management of business ecosystem development. It is determined that it includes the assessment of the resource potential of the territory; defining its core competencies; locomotive industries, industries and spheres of management; creation of drivers of development of spatial systems; formation of points and zones of economic growth; cross-sectoral redistribution of investment flows, internal balancing of territorial development; creating a system of sustainable finance and ensuring system-wide sustainability of territorial formation. An appropriate scheme of sequential decomposition of the business ecosystem is proposed. The functional role of the natural resource space as a source of production, raw material, energy resources and the basis for the organization of business ecosystems have been determined here. The role of key competences for the functioning of a sustainable competitive economy has been determined also. The leading role of economic drivers and locomotive industries, which are able to build powerful chains of production, supply and sale in ensuring the sustainable development of business ecosystems, has been established. Also there is established the need to create growth points as spatially-localized territorial-economic entities, wich are provided with the necessary growth drivers and focused on the production of locomotive industries. The functional role of the sustainable finance system in the extraction, redistribution, accumulation and capitalization of rental income from environmental management is characterized.

Continuous economic and social changes led to the development of new concepts both in business as well as in academic environments. As a result, one of them is the concept of business ecosystem. This concept brought a new definition of an industry through clear delimitation of organizational roles and relationships which are evolving around a common strategy and through the vision of an industry as a community of interrelated organizations who work together for a common benefit. This paper aims to provide a conceptual framework for a business ecosystem with a view to measure its performance by means of strategy maps. The main purpose of strategy maps is to communicate the strategy throughout the organization and to ensure its proper and successful execution. From this point of view the findings should reveal how the organizations inside business ecosystems are adapting a common strategy and the importance of the value creation processes established inside the business ecosystem. In order to achieve this objective it will be identified the business ecosystems strategy along with specific features and it will be transposed in a Balanced Scorecard framework according to its four perspectives: financial, customer, internal processes and learning and growth. Each perspective respond to organization needs and reflects the most important strategic objectives. The linkage and relations between each perspectives elements will be established by analyzing sustainable development influences as a new trend of organization development and as response to global concern to environment, social and economic evolution. This direction of analysis will provide, for various stakeholders, a new framework to implement the concepts of eco-innovation and eco-development as well as cooperation and co-evolution. Basically these concepts will be considered as key aspects of analysis as well as for the strategy implementation process and will provide knowledge about organizations mechanisms related to its role as a business ecosystem within the context of the internal and external environment. The main outcome, the foreseen result, is to create a strategy map template for a business ecosystem that could foster the importance of cooperation and co-evolution concepts for strategy implementation.

The purpose of the article is to define an innovative concept of sustainable management based on the analysis of the institutional configuration of business ecosystem entities. The concept of sustainable (SUST) management is outlined as the creation of conditions for multi-entity management of territorial capital on the basis of digital platform technologies and the principles of partnership between government, business and the population. The institutional configuration of territorial business ecosystems is analyzed. It is determined that the business-ecosystem organization of economic activity is a flexible and dynamic system that creates opportunities for the integration of natural resources into economic circulation in territorial communities. It is established that there is a need for a radical restructuring of the institutional configuration of the spatial management system of natural resources in the direction of creating a system of multi-entity management of territorial capital. The main institutions and institutes of the spatial system of natural resources management of the territorial business ecosystem are outlined, in the field of local government, public-private partnership, corporate-platform and structural-project management, etc., within which economic actors of business ecosystems are endowed with appropriate functions and powers.. The structure of the business-ecosystem concept of sustainable management is detailed, including the basic formats of institutionalization of territorial assets management, informational and communicational platform component and management mechanisms of sustainable management, which are focused on creating a system of multi-entity management of sustainable development of territorial communities. Basic formats and forms of institutionalization of territorial assets management in the conditions of decentralization of power are proposed, including communication platforms of collaborative interactions between public authorities, business and population, as well as a set of mechanisms of structural and project management of sustainable development of territorial communities.

The aim of the study is to analyze the theoretical basis of creative economy and its development trends in the context of innovative business ecosystems formation. The scientific novelty of the research consists in solving the most important scientific and applied problem - further development of theoretical provisions of creative economy, ecosystems, as well as substantiation of the conceptual approach to the formation of innovative business ecosystem as a coherent management model. In the process of research, general scientific and special methods were used: scientific abstraction, deduction, analysis and synthesis, system and critical analysis, structural-logical, ascending from the abstract to the concrete, and statistical analysis. It has been substantiated that the priority development of creative economy as a strategic driver of sustainable development is the formation of an ecosystem conducive to the development of complex non-linear dynamic innovation processes, development of value propositions and value chain. The analysis of theoretical and methodological aspects of formation and functioning of ecosystems indicates the lack of development of this problem and the need to develop scientific approaches to their identification. Generalization of the results of theoretical analysis allowed us to group ecosystems according to the identified attributes into five main types. It was substantiated that a sustainable business ecosystem is a favorable environment for innovation to increase its value and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals. It is proposed to consider a sustainable "business ecosystem" as a coherent management model with established characteristics, which describes an aggregate system of business ecosystem modules that interact with each other and are focused on co-creation and co-production of value.

The article is devoted to the issues of the sustainable development of such a representative of the ecosystem as a special economic zone. The subject of the study is the organizational interactions that arise between resident companies, clusters within the technopolis and the management company. The conducted research is aimed at determining the criteria for the expediency of selecting participants in the ecosystem, identifying indicators for assessing the effectiveness of their joint functioning. The objectives of the study were to identify key trends in the formation of business ecosystems; to formulate the principles of managing the sustainability of the ecosystem, to determine the levels of sustainability and indicators for measuring it. The methodology of scientific research is based on the assessment of the digital maturity of business processes, the theory of interaction between organizations and the platform approach. Statistical processing methods of reports on management companies, grouping and rating the attractiveness of technoparks for investors were used during the study. The article formulates the principles of sustainability of the business ecosystem, defines the levels and indicators for their assessment. The results of the study are addressed to employees of management companies of special economic zones, heads of executive authorities responsible for the development of industrial policy. The development of research in the field of sustainable development of business ecosystems is related to the consideration of information security issues for agents of the digital economy.

The sustainable development and success of industrial regions is largely determined by the efficiency of enterprises in the territory, united in ecosystems, often around the city-forming enterprise. The study of industrial ecosystems, their evolution and the interrelations of participants will make it possible to more effectively implement the goals of sustainable development in the territory, ensure a fair distribution of income, well-being and rational environmental management. The purpose of the article is to assess the relation between the development of entities of the industrial ecosystem on the example of the industrial ecosystem of the Magnitogorsk urban district in Russia. The study used data from Rosstat and the Federal Tax Service for 2007-21. The main results of the study are as follows: five groups were identified in the industrial ecosystem (the core of the ecosystem, companies affiliated with the core, customers of the core, suppliers of the core and other beneficiaries from the work of the core and the ecosystem as a whole, “fellow travellers”). The connection between the performance of the ecosystem core and other companies turned out to be statistically significant, especially strong for revenue growth rates. Among individual ecosystem groups, affiliates and core clients experienced the greatest influence of the core, while the connection of the results of the core with suppliers and fellow travellers was weaker. The connection, taking into account the time lag of one year, turned out to be weaker than the year-to-year connection. In general, the results confirm the hypothesis of a strong connection between the stability of the core and other participants in the industrial ecosystem.

Abstract This research paper aims to identify the factors, components, and key aspects that significantly contribute to the establishment of a sustainable business ecosystem through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. By analysing prominent publications, we seek to describe coherent strategies with an expected impact. Our objectives encompass exploring trends from both theoretical perspectives, such as predictions by scientists, and empirical perspectives, including figures derived from studies. We outline several secondary objectives that guide our step-by-step approach. Firstly, we identify defining elements of a sustainable business environment based on insights from specialized literature. Secondly, we categorize ecosystems into different types, such as economic, digital, ecological, and entrepreneurial, providing further elaboration later in the paper. Thirdly, we present an updated understanding of the dynamic evolution of ecosystems and their components. This includes examining the influence of digital advancements and digitalization on the business environment, as well as the opportunities and threats they generate. Of particular importance is the role of universities as a significant landmark within the business ecosystem. We discuss the university's involvement in technological and informational transfer to ensure sustainability, focusing on the levers through which universities consolidate and stimulate the business ecosystem. To achieve our objectives, we employ bibliometric analysis, utilizing the VOSviewer software, which offers valuable insights for constructing diagnostic schemes and development models tailored to specific business environment challenges. The research methodology relies on the VOSviewer software for processing academic publication databases. To align with the theme and purpose of this study, we selected the SCOPUS database for its implicit certification of superior academic quality in the publications it contains.

Topicality of the subject is stipulated by the necessity of working-out algorithms to identify stakeholders and channels of communication with them, which could help cut costs and control risks present in the process in general and within the frames of business-ecosystems in particular. The article describes in detail the process of corporate interaction and identifies structure of its key stages. By analyzing the current approaches to organization of corporate interaction provided in a number of academic works the author put forwards a matrix, which shows the structure of mutually beneficial exchange of resources and profits for participants of corporate interaction. This analysis gives an opportunity to find out stakeholders’ interests, understanding of which can lead to the balance underlying the efficient corporate interaction. Using the conclusions on nature of the interaction process the author elaborated methodology of building technologies of sustainable corporate interaction in business-ecosystems.

This research aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities in creating a sustainable digital business ecosystem to support inclusive global economic growth. The research method used includes collecting and analyzing various documents such as research reports, academic publications, government policies, and industry documents related to digital business ecosystems, sustainability, and global economic development. The results show that the integration between the concepts of digital business ecosystems and sustainability has a crucial role in creating a sustainable business environment. Measuring and reporting the results of ecosystem services is currently challenging accounting. On the one hand, the business activity takes advantage of ecosystem services, creating entrepreneurial benefits, on the other hand, business tries to restore the damage to ecosystems and ensure sustainable development, that need accountability for their results. The article interprets the core provisions of the IFRS-S1 standard in the framework of ecosystem services, presenting the priorities of sustainable development information disclosures. Abstract Hyperlocal media are increasingly prominent in local media ecologies. However, economic pressures are their biggest challenge and are therefore our main thematic. The study is based on empirical data from 35 hyperlocals in Sweden, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. We present a conceptual framework of viable, sustainable and resilient models and find that hyperlocals are diversifying their revenues. Drawing on business ecosystems as a theoretical approach, we find these hyperlocals are surviving by forging symbiotic relationships with media, businesses, advertisers and communities in their environment. With its focus on imbalanced and evolving relations, the approach offers a broad framework to explain how hyperlocal business models are developing through a dynamic system of proximal interdependencies. The results contribute to new knowledge by explaining the revenue diversification of hyperlocals in the digital ecosystemic space.

Transformation of business ecosystems of the energy sector enterprises is a strategic necessity for their sustainable competitiveness in the context of changes in the global energy landscape, which determines the relevance of the study. The purpose of the study was to substantiate the need to transform the business ecosystems of the energy sector enterprises. The following methods are applied: scientific abstraction – in substantiating the meaning of “business ecosystem” and its definition; inductive, deductive – in collecting, systematising, and developing a conceptual model of a business ecosystem; abstract and logical – for theoretical generalisations and forming conclusions; systemic – for detailed development of a strategy for business ecosystems of energy sector enterprises. A conceptual model of the business ecosystem is proposed, which includes the relationship and interdependence of large, niche and key players. A mechanism for implementing the business ecosystem strategy is proposed. It is established that the success of implementing a business ecosystem strategy depends on the ability to effectively coordinate interaction between different participants in this ecosystem, and on existing agreements concluded. A mechanism for implementing the business ecosystem strategy is proposed in the following sequence: modernisation of the management vector of the business ecosystem, a system of cooperation between enterprises of the energy and related industries, investment support for enterprises of the energy sector, transition to “green” energy, and development of a vertical and horizontal business ecosystem. The features of developing the business ecosystem in the energy sector enterprises are revealed: energy and digital transformation, resistance to change, energy services, partnership and cooperation, and improvement of energy efficiency. It is proved that the business ecosystem of energy sector enterprises is a complex and multifaceted category, which is developed under the influence of a set of advantages, the combination of which forms a more stable position in the market for the enterprise. The practical value lies in developing recommendations that determine the transformation of business ecosystems of the energy sector enterprises and consist in the modernisation of the management of the business ecosystem, the development of cooperation between energy and related industries, investment support for energy sector enterprises, and the need to switch to “green” energy, vertical and horizontal business ecosystem

The article is devoted to the creation and evolution of ecosystems, the peculiarities of their functioning, the control and communications management. The main characteristics of ecosystems are considered as: modularity, network structure, different types of partnership and competition, complementarity, interdependence, self-regulation, joint value creation, coevolution, etc. Integrated communications create the most optimal conditions for ecosystems’ functioning, ensure the consistency of participants’ interactions, introduce a common culture, rules, basic values, ethics and communication style, which increases motivation and favourably affects the overall image. According to the authors, in the context of decentralised management, the role of compliance control for assessing and preventing compliance risks, as well as the requirements for the organisation of monitoring, is increasing.The relevance of the study is related to the rapid evolution of ecosystems and their importance for the economy, as well as difficulties in understanding the process of their creation and functioning on the background of the lack of scientific research on the organisation of integrated communications.The purpose of the article is to study the modern ecosystem management using the analysis of scientific papers, comparison, generalization, analogies, systematic and logical analysis.The scientific novelty is in the author’s interpretation of the peculiarities of ecosystem functioning.The practical significance of the work is in the possibility of its use in the creation and improvement of ecosystems within the framework of sustainable innovative development.

AbstractMarine ecosystems and their associated biodiversity sustain life on Earth and hold intrinsic value. Critical marine ecosystem services include maintenance of global oxygen and carbon cycles, production of food and energy, and sustenance of human wellbeing. However marine ecosystems are swiftly being degraded due to the unsustainable use of marine environments and a rapidly changing climate. The fundamental challenge for the future is therefore to safeguard marine ecosystem biodiversity, function, and adaptive capacity whilst continuing to provide vital resources for the global population. Here, we use foresighting/hindcasting to consider two plausible futures towards 2030: a business-as-usual trajectory (i.e. continuation of current trends), and a more sustainable but technically achievable future in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We identify key drivers that differentiate these alternative futures and use these to develop an action pathway towards the desirable, more sustainable future. Key to achieving the more sustainable future will be establishing integrative (i.e. across jurisdictions and sectors), adaptive management that supports equitable and sustainable stewardship of marine environments. Conserving marine ecosystems will require recalibrating our social, financial, and industrial relationships with the marine environment. While a sustainable future requires long-term planning and commitment beyond 2030, immediate action is needed to avoid tipping points and avert trajectories of ecosystem decline. By acting now to optimise management and protection of marine ecosystems, building upon existing technologies, and conserving the remaining biodiversity, we can create the best opportunity for a sustainable future in 2030 and beyond.

Purpose Service ecosystems are gaining credence among management scholars. However, there is still little agreement about the distinguishing attributes of service ecosystems in both the public and the private sectors. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the health care service system, suggesting a “recipe” for the implementation of a sustainable and innovative health care service ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach A mixed methodology was used. First, a critical literature review was conducted to lay the conceptual foundations of this study. Then a theory about the institutional, organizational and managerial requisites for the implementation of a health care service ecosystem was developed. Findings The health care sector is appropriate for the core tenets of the service ecosystem perspective. Tailored interventions aimed at improving the functioning of the health care service ecosystem should be implemented at the micro, meso, macro and mega levels. Patient empowerment, patient-centered care and integrated care are the fundamental ingredients of the recipe for effective health care service ecosystems. Practical implications The ecosystem approach provides health policy makers with interesting insights to help shape the health care service system of the future. The paper also contributes to the innovation of managerial practices emphasizing the role of patient involvement in the design and delivery of health care. Originality/value This is one of the first attempts to systematize scientific knowledge about service ecosystems in the health care sector. An agenda for further research is suggested, in order to further advance the establishment of an effective and innovative health care service ecosystem.

The methodological base of the research includes the theoretical foundations of cluster structure, structural integration of ecosystems, the network method of their coordination, platform interaction, global reporting initiative (GRI), international and domestic regulations in the field of sustainable development, scientific publications of Russian and foreign authors. The article proposes clarifications of individual formulations in the definition of ecosystems and conducts their classification: bionomic, industrial ecosystem, business ecosystem, business, innovative ecosystem. The evolution of the definition of “ecosystem” is investigated, in which its qualitatively new stage in the global concept of sustainable development is revealed. The formulation of the ecosystem of sustainable development as the intellectual coordination core of the innovation ecosystem is derived. The concepts of capital components of the new economic formation of “accessism” are introduced. The risks and threats of economic, legal, and state security in the formation of the access economy are investigated. A model of integration of components has been developed: economic, social, environmental, infrastructural elements and directions. The directions of creating new organizational forms of interaction in the ecosystem with the participation of state technology (Gostech) are proposed. Recommendations are given to counter threats and risks caused by ecosystem changes in the structure of socio-economic relations that have historical significance.

Purpose Bringing more impact seems to be a real issue for social initiatives and organizations requiring the adoption of new approaches. The paper aims to define an integrated approach for building, maintaining and upgrading Islamic social finance and sustainable ecosystems. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents a conceptual framework based on case studies and literature review describing the methodology and the necessary steps to build sustainable ecosystems. Findings The paper shows the impact of building social finance ecosystems on tackling social issues. It emphasizes the idea that solving social issues is everybody’s business – from governments to businesses – and that those initiatives require sufficient Sharīʿah-compliant funding to achieve sustainability goals. Research limitations/implications The paper does not focus on the Islamic world experiences in building ecosystems serving social causes. Practical implications The paper gives an overview on how collaboration between the different social oriented organisations can enhance the social impact of the different initiatives. The aim is to ensure adequate financing to all the ecosystem components during the whole lifecycle. Social implications The suggested approach of building sustainable ecosystems can serve as a way to assess the existing social initiatives and practices to find relevant combinations targeting more impact. Originality/value In the social sphere, the idea of building ecosystems has been explored in different ways but never in a way that gathers all the components including finance providers, coordinators and the different types of initiatives. The paper adapts the ecosystem concept to the Islamic finance specificities.

The modern economy forms new global trends in production and consumption, markets and business, however, the formation of a global ecosystem based on start-ups has become a significant trend. Therefore, the development of startups in business ecosystems should be considered both from a theoretical and practical point of view. The purpose of the article is to study the theoretical and practical aspects of the development of startups in Ukraine in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems. The object of research is startups in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems. Methods used in the study: systematization and generalization, comparative and monographic analysis, detailing, coherence. The hypothesis of the study was the assumption that start-ups are the backbone of the business ecosystem, and it is advisable to provide support to start-ups through the subjects of their life support - various environmental agents and institutions. Presentation of the main material: according to the results of studies of the theoretical and practical aspects of the problems of development of startups in Ukraine in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems, it has been established that there is still a discussion on determining the essence of a business ecosystem, but startups are the system-forming beginning. Two main types of ecosystems and components of business ecosystems with appropriate coherence are identified. The advantages, disadvantages and general characteristics of business ecosystems are determined, which made it possible to characterize the modern Ukrainian startup market. It has been established that it is advisable to provide support to start-ups through the subjects of their life support, that is, various environmental agents and institutions. The originality and practical significance of the study lies in establishing the coherence of the components (terms) of the business ecosystem and the conclusion about the need for assistance for the development of business ecosystems from the state. Conclusions and prospects for further research. Studies of the theoretical and practical aspects of the problems of development of startups in the context of the functioning of business ecosystems made it possible to draw a conclusion about the system-forming beginning of startups and about the constituent business ecosystems that have coherence. It has been determined that there are two main types of ecosystems that have advantages, disadvantages and corresponding characteristics that affect the characteristics of the modern startup market in Ukraine. An analysis of the obstacles in the development of startups in Ukraine made it possible to focus on the need to support startups from the state. It is advisable to provide assistance to the subjects of life support of business ecosystems - various environmental agents and institutions. Further research should be carried out taking into account the social aspect of the functioning of business ecosystems to implement the principles of sustainable development.

Managing a firm’s external environment involves considering not only relationships with economic partners, but also the influence of various elements of its ecosystem. In the article, we develop stages and methods for assessing the formation of an ecosystem based on a scientific review. The theoretical framework of the study is institutional economics and the concept of ecosystem. The method of system logical analysis was used. The research data are retrieved from scientific papers indexed in the global databases Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus in 2015–2022. Having analyzed the existing literature, we formulated the definition of a firm’s sustainable ecosystem interpreted as the external environment of a business entity with a comprehensive set of infrastructure elements, stable network interactions, the extensive use of digital technologies, the essential institutional support, and optimal transaction costs. In the formation of a firm’s sustainable ecosystem, there are five stages providing for the development of infrastructural, network, digital, institutional, and financial parameters of this system. These factors ensure the benefits of a sustainable ecosystem consisting in diverse economic activities, strong relationships, fast decision-making, stable strategic development, and reduced costs for maintaining the ecosystem. The novelty of the study lies in the systematization of the stages and methods for the formation of a firm’s sustainable ecosystem based on institutional economics, which adds to the existing methods for assessing business ecosystems. We have highlighted the avenues for further studies on expanding the toolkit for evaluating various aspects of a firm’s ecosystem functioning.

This qualitative literature review explores ecosystem approaches in international business, focusing on non-equity collaborations and partnerships within evolving global cities. Global cities serve as critical nodes for multinational enterprises (MNEs), facilitating strategic interactions and innovation through diverse collaborations with local firms and stakeholders. The review synthesizes current research to highlight how such collaborations enhance MNEs' competitive advantage by leveraging local knowledge, resources, and market access. Key findings illustrate the role of global city ecosystems in fostering innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainable development for MNEs. However, challenges such as regulatory complexities and institutional misalignments constrain effective collaboration, necessitating adaptive governance and strategic alignment among stakeholders. Future research directions include integrating quantitative analyses to complement qualitative insights, exploring diverse geographic and sectoral contexts, and advancing digital and sustainable strategies within global city ecosystems.

The social, environmental, and economic tensions of the 21st century highlight the urgent need to rethink development and assess how ecosystem actors support or obstruct the transition to more sustainable systems. Notably, while established companies are increasingly pressured to adopt sustainable models, entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems still prioritize economic and financial sustainability for emerging businesses. This paper explores this issue, focusing on business incubators and emphasizing their role as intermediary organizations. Given their position within the ecosystem, incubators can drive the transition in two key ways: by fostering new forms of exchange among ecosystem actors and by nurturing a new generation of ventures designed to be sustainable from the outset. Addressing these questions is particularly important, as without a clear commitment to sustainability, incubators risk perpetuating unsustainable business models.

Информационная база исследования – статьи, опубликованные в открытом доступе и проиндексированные в базах данных Scopus и РИНЦ, а также авторские разработки по стейкхолдерскому представлению экономических экосистем территории и эволюционному развитию подобных экосистем. Предложено проводить томографический анализ элементов экономической экосистемы территории на основе основных этапов ее развития: рождение, укрепление, лидерство, обновление. Разработан методологический подход к анализу устойчивого развития экономической экосистемы территории на основе послойного анализа цифровых взаимодействий органов власти со стейкхолдерами экономической экосистемы: муниципалитетами, средствами массовой информации, научными и образовательными учреждениями, предприятиями бизнеса, обществом. Проанализированы цифровые технологии для управления устойчивым развитием территорий. Научная новизна полученного результата заключается в разработке методологического подхода к анализу устойчивого развития экономической экосистемы территории на основе послойного анализа цифровых взаимодействий органов власти со стейкхолдерами экономической экосистемы, дополняющего существующие методы анализа развития территорий. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodological approach to the sustainable development analysis of the territory’s economic ecosystem based on a digital interactions’ layered analysis between government authorities and ecosystem’s stakeholders on the territory. The research information base consists of articles indexed in the Scopus and RSCI databases, as well as author's developments on the stakeholder representation of the territory’s economic ecosystems and such ecosystems’ evolutionary development. It is proposed to carry out a tomographic analysis of the territory economic ecosystem elements based on the main its development stages: birth, strengthening, leadership and renewal. A methodological approach has been developed to analyze the sustainable development of the territory’s economic ecosystem based on a layered analysis of digital interactions between government authorities and stakeholders: municipalities, mass media, scientific and educational institutions, business enterprises and society. Digital technologies for managing territories’ sustainable development are analyzed. The scientific novelty lies in the methodological approach development to the sustainable development analysis of the territory’s economic ecosystem based on a layered digital interactions analysis between government authorities and stakeholders of the economic ecosystem, which complements the existing methods of the territories’ development analysis.

The creation of successful innovation ecosystems, like Silicon Valley, is challenging due to significant cultural, infrastructural, and resource differences between regions. In this context, the Innovation Reef (I-Reef) model emerges as a promising alternative, offering an approach for regions with limited resources to develop successful innovation ecosystems based on cooperation and mutual benefit among participants. This model has great potential to promote regional development, especially due to its focus on retaining and sharing the value generated. However, the role of I-Reef in sustainable regional development still needs to be further explored. Thus, the objective of this study is to deepen the theoretical understanding of the I-Reef model by analyzing its contribution to sustainable development. To achieve this, a comparison was made between I-Reef and established models such as business, innovation, knowledge, and entrepreneurial ecosystems. A systematic literature review conducted on Scopus found 704 articles published in the last three decades. The purpose was to identify the similarities and differences between the models of innovation business ecosystem models. The results show that there is alignment between I-Reef and the different ecosystems on several points. A central aspect of I-Reef is that it relies on a strong network of mutually beneficial relationships, much more oriented to sustainable development than the other models, which is a key factor in generating competitive advantage and development for the region. This characteristic is either not addressed or not placed at the core of the ecosystems discussed in the literature. For future research, empirical studies and validation of the I-Reef model with experts are suggested, as this theoretical study lays the foundation for more in-depth analyses.

The article considers the methodology of business process development in the digital business transformation. The aim of the study was to determine the dependence of sustainable enterprise development on the organisation of stakeholder engagement in the context of the digital ecosystem and the organisation of effective digital asset management.Taking into account the aim of the study, the main objectives are to study international experience of managing business development in digital transformation, determine the impact of ecosystems on business organisation and management of business processes and sustainability, and develop recommendations for business model formation and its alignment with the ecosystem market needs.The study resulted in the development of a sustainability framework in the digital ecosystem and proposals for digital ecosystem configurations that focus on giving and generating “value” when applying new ways and methods of “platform” interaction in the digital economy. Sustainability in digital transformation and ecosystematic business organisation depends on how digital assets are managed and approaches used to resource management. This process requires consideration of the methodology for business process development and research into changes in the external environment, identifying the possibility of integrating actors into the digital ecosystem development processes and defining tools for business process management.

Purpose: Several studies have shown that community management and platform engagements promote value co-creation in the automobile, housing, e-commerce, education and IT industries. The potential of digital technologies to support more inclusive and sustainable growth is transforming traditional business ecosystems. However, this value co-creation in digital platform ecosystems has struggled across healthcare due to the challenges associated with privacy, security and data management. By viewing healthcare as a business rather than a social intervention, this study aims to design a strategic framework supporting the development, implementation and management of digital platform ecosystems within the business environment.Design/methodology/approach: This study builds upon existing literature on value co-creation strategies, implementation initiatives, and interoperability management requirements, as well as leveraging data and insights from a survey to develop a management framework for digital platform ecosystems in healthcare.Findings: The study shows that a strategic framework provides a systematic approach to integrating multiple actors in developing, implementing and managing healthcare platform ecosystems. It also offers practical implications and recommendations for healthcare delivery and service providers.Originality/value: The researchers present an original framework based on in-depth theoretical and empirical studies of the digital platform ecosystem in healthcare. Moreover, they demonstrate the application of this framework by assessing a selected digital platform ecosystem. Trends caused by digital transformations in the economy have led to the formation of new forms of interaction between industrial enterprises, industries and complexes. Digital ecosystems are becoming a tool for ensuring sustainable economic development, requiring the development of conceptual foundations and methodological provisions for sustainable development in the context of the application of the ecosystem approach within the framework of spatial interaction of economic entities. The increasing role of digital assets and methods of their use within digital ecosystems is becoming an integral part of the formation of resource potential that ensures sustainable development with ecosystem interaction of participants, which indicates the development of competition not between individual companies, which is inherent in the traditional economy, but between the ecosystems being formed. Thanks to ecosystem interaction, participating companies focus more on external interaction, innovative priorities in management technologies, the creation of a rapidly adaptable value chain, the accumulation of knowledge and the build-up of digital assets. Territorial boundaries become conditional, competitive relations within the ecosystem become partner-oriented, aimed at increasing the return on network effects obtained through the interaction of digital platform participants. Ecosystems as more flexible structures have the property of rapid response to changes in the external environment and the ability to adjust to target requirements and tasks, rapid market coverage, technology adaptation and the creation of new business models. The structural changes taking place as a result of the digital transformation of the economy in various sectors of the economy show an increasing interest in the development of digital manufacturing enterprises and the transition to high-tech production. Digital transformation of activity is inextricably linked with ensuring sustainability of development, and such components of the ecosystem as flexibility and adaptability, as well as complementarity of assets, allow optimizing the sustainability of the socio-economic system.

There are tremendous challenges in meeting the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030. A collaborative search for solutions is needed to tackle the complex and novel problems at the crux of these challenges. This requires local governments and companies to join forces with other stakeholders. This collaboration usually takes the form of new Public-Private partnerships (PPPs) in emerging innovation ecosystems focused on the SDGs. These ecosystems are integrated through relational business models – multisided platforms with heterogeneous stakeholders and multidimensional utilities. Using the newly developed stakeholder resource-based view (SRBV), we have identified some characteristics of these business models and their complex relational governance. We recognize that a lot of work is still needed to define the right governance for PPPs.

Smart mobility is a central issue in the recent discourse about urban development policy towards smart cities. The design of innovative and sustainable mobility infrastructures as well as public policies require cooperation and innovations between various stakeholders—businesses as well as policy makers—of the business ecosystems that emerge around smart city initiatives. This poses a challenge for deploying instruments and approaches for the proactive management of such business ecosystems. In this article, we report on findings from a smart city initiative we have used as a case study to inform the development, implementation, and prototypical deployment of a visual analytic system (VAS). As results of our design science research we present an agile framework to collaboratively collect, aggregate and map data about the ecosystem. The VAS and the agile framework are intended to inform and stimulate knowledge flows between ecosystem stakeholders in order to reflect on viable business and policy strategies. Agile processes and roles to collaboratively manage and adapt business ecosystem models and visualizations are defined. We further introduce basic categories for identifying, assessing and selecting Internet data sources that provide the data for ecosystem models and we detail the ecosystem data and view models developed in our case study. Our model represents a first explication of categories for visualizing business ecosystem models in a smart city mobility context.

The Earth is warming, ecosystems are being overexploited, oceans are being polluted, and thousands of species are going extinct—all fueled by the need for a permanent increase in production for more consumerism and development. “Business as usual” continues untouched, while increasing attention has been given to the “sustainable development” concept. Despite their importance as life supporting ecosystems, forests, oceans, and wetlands are being destroyed at an accelerating rate. The conservation and restoration of mangroves, for example, are also vital for the planet to face catastrophic global warming. Based on a non-systematic literature review, we address how true mangrove conservation is incompatible with so-called “sustainable development”. We turn to the urgent changes needed to avoid environmental and societal collapse, promoted by the Western economic development paradigm, and address why the sustainable development approach has failed to stop environmental degradation and protect resources for next generations. Proposed solutions involve the rejection of the capital-oriented, nature-predatory systems, degrowth, a deep transformation of our energy matrix, and a shift in our nutrition to lower levels of the food chain. These are based on a profound sense of responsibility over the planet, respecting all life forms, ecosystem dynamics, and life sustaining properties of the biosphere.

This paper explores the most recent Fintech (financial technology) phenomenon from an ecosystem perspective. Differentiated from the earlier Fintech evolution led by traditional financial institutions, “cross-sector” Fintech that operates at the intersection of financial services and information technology disrupts existing business models of banks while creating novel ecosystem dynamics. This study explores the Fintech ecosystem composition to understand better business model innovation based on underlying ecosystem dynamics while focusing on the specific role of cross-sector actors. These actors have escaped scrutiny despite being mature and experienced and having strong resource bases. Adopting a comparative case study method by considering the China-based Alibaba Group and Tencent, the study’s findings indicate that novel business model developments based on strong technological expertise and scale-based resources by cross-sector Fintech render a functional perspective on fast-developing Fintech industry less practical. Apart from cross-sector Fintech, investors constitute a new dimension in the conceptualization of the Fintech ecosystem. Overall, the interconnectedness of the cross-sector Fintech beyond the Fintech sectors drives the fuzzy boundaries between ecosystems, established business models, terminology definitions, ecosystem actors’ roles and relationships, which appear to become more heterogeneous and changeable over time. The study contributes to the scant literature on Fintech ecosystems and their sustainable development.

Introduction. A sustainable strategic trend today is the creation of ecosystems – innovative business models. Ecosystem companies are becoming new objects of economic research. Studying the features of their development allows us to create effective management tools for maximizing the use of constantly emerging opportunities by modern organizations, which ensures the growth of their sustainability and competitiveness in a rapidly changing business environment. Goal. Highlighting the features and prospects for creating and developing viable business models based on the principles of the ecosystem approach. Materials and methods. The study is based on the analysis of literary sources using general scientific methods: systematic and comparative, induction and deduction, graphical and tabular presentation of data, expert method. Results and discussion. In the course of the work, the possibilities of a new format of business models were identified – ecosystems, which, based on self-moderation, self-organization and constructive interaction of actors, allow achieving a positive synergistic effect on goals. Recommendations are given for the effective management of organizations in the context of digital transformation based on an ecosystem approach. Conclusion. Based on the results of the study, we can conclude that changing business conditions open up broad horizons for the use of a variety of business design tools, which predetermines the constant search for effective business models. The development of an ecosystem approach in the management of modern business structures contributes, through new technologies, progressive automation of business processes, flexible approaches to building multi-level interactions, changing social connections, to the development of new strategies and business models for the accelerated creation and launch of globally superior and competitive products and solutions to the market in various fields.

The objective of this research was to review the manuscripts registered in the Scopus database related to business ecosystems during the period 2018–2022. A total of 96 documents were selected and examined under a bibliometric and bibliographic approach. The results showed an annual growth rate of 13.21%. The United Kingdom (n = 22) led the countries with the most documents, computer science (n = 40) is the subject area with the most publications, and articles (n = 61) and conference papers (n = 23) dominated the types of documents. The nine most studied topics were innovation ecosystems, collaborative ecosystems, sustainable business ecosystems, digital business ecosystems, ecosystems of the Internet of Things, circular ecosystems in companies, regulatory frameworks for digital business ecosystems, resilience of business ecosystems, and ecosystems in smart cities. Six unexplored themes were extracted for future research: ICT industries, smart contracts, electric vehicles, serious games, energy, and blockchain. It should be noted that this study is one of the most up to date, and 85.5% of the 96 publications were original studies, i.e., valuable information that supports the results.

The imperative for decarbonization forces businesses to transform their business models (BMs) and to adopt Sustainable Business Models which focus on creating value sustainably. In the context of Sustainable Business Model Innovation, maintaining close relationships within ecosystems is crucial to ensure a sustainable transformation while preserving competitiveness. As corporate boundaries become more transparent, the importance of external resources increases, leading to a shift from closed to open business models (OBM). In OBMs, stakeholders, including customers, actively co-create innovation and value creation. Our research investigates how integrating these approaches can shape BMs that effectively address decarbonization drivers and tackle the required business model innovation. We conducted a structured literature review to develop a taxonomy that outlines 64 design options across nine dimensions for sustainable, open BMs. In conclusion, this study provides sustainable and open design options, classified into detailed taxonomies. The practical applicability of this taxonomy was demonstrated through a use case classification, providing a foundation for companies and further research into designing and implementing these BMs in the context of decarbonization.

Such structures provide the possibility of network interaction between ecosystem actors through the ecosystem organizer and directly among themselves, forming a value proposition to consumers. The presented system of indicators, adopted by the participants of the ecosystem, will allow assessing the dynamics of the ecosystem development processes, taking into account the peculiarities of network structures, and form a community aimed at the balanced development of business entities without harming modern consumers and future generations.

Start-ups play one of the most significant roles in global economic development. The business environment or the business ecosystem is well-known in entrepreneurship. A start-up’s success level is positively correlated with the environment in which it operates. One of the supporting factors in the start-up ecosystems is corporations, which try to connect with start-up companies using corporate acceleration programs. Another one is a higher engagement of educational institutions within the start-up environment. The study is a comparative analysis of start-up ecosystems in Shenzhen and Hong Kong from a corporate initiative perspective. The study applied a triangulated approach, synergizing primary data from interviews with relevant start-up ecosystem stakeholders and secondary data to further examine and support the initial findings. The results identified and compared the development levels of the Hong Kong and Shenzhen start-up ecosystems and were sufficient to create recommendations and best practices for start-ups and corporates interested in the respective areas. The findings suggest that Shenzhen’s start-up ecosystem is more attractive for corporations than Hong Kong’s within the context of innovation, technology, and talent. Hong Kong will first maintain its role as a business hub and as an international asset management center and, secondly, promote the development of technologies and innovation to increase its global competitiveness. The Outline Plan positions Shenzhen as a leading innovation hub within the broader area aiming to increase the city’s level of internationalization.

This article argues that there is a need to move beyond narrow ways of thinking about training to incorporate broader notions of ‘workforce development’ and ‘skill ecosystems’. A market-based approach to skills development is contrasted with a social consensus model, which takes a more integrated view of how skills are formed and sustained. However, following a review of Australia’s brief and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to develop something akin to a social consensus approach, we argue that there is much to be gained from a workforce development approach and an understanding of skill formation as occurring in the context of skill ecosystems. To be most effective this approach to skill formation requires the facilitation of networks and nurturing of partnerships among the different agents and agencies concerned with skill development. Recent initiatives in Australia that explicitly adopt a skill ecosystem and workforce development orientation demonstrate the potential of these approaches to overcome many of the problems associated with currently dominant market-based approaches and avoid the pitfalls of social consensus models.

Based on the analysis of the norms of strategic documents and other normative legal acts, the author considers environmental entrepreneurship in the light of sustainable socio-economic development of the Russian state, determines the significance of the concept of sustainable development for ensuring environmental safety, as well as environmental development of Russia. Social entrepreneurship, which has a high methodological potential, is designed to help solve a large number of accumulated environmental problems, especially in the field of waste management of production and consumption. The article analyzes individual UN sustainable development goals and national legislation designed to ensure the implementation of social entrepreneurship, which has a high methodological potential. The author concludes that the legislation is becoming more and more environmentally friendly, and these norms also penetrate into acts regulating economic activities, the profit from which should be reinvested in solving socio-environmental problems.
