As we subscribe to more and more communication channels our 'world of messages' is becoming a complex matrix of dispersed information. Emailing, Blogging, Instant Messaging... have become customary daily activities for many. While the wealth of media enriches our interaction experiences, it nonetheless constrains our ability to assimilate information from one location (information is stored online, on a local machine, and on the local network) and in one format. As a matter of fact, given our reliance on multiple communication channels, we have to resort to using several distributed applications that lack a unified visual interface and storage structure. Result: 1- Incompatible message description and storage structures. 2- Incompatible message transfer and notification standards. As in the case of Email and Instant Messaging which despite their many similarities are still highly non interoperable. 3- No horizontal visibility across and within message media formats (Email, Blog, IM, etc...) preventing unified searches, correspondence logging and centralized information management. 4- Distributed contact and address repository, preventing access to a unified comprehensive 'Address Book'. Large corporations have the ability to resolve the issues above by forcing a top down standardization policy that regulates correspondence forms and formats between and across their business units. While that approach might prove fairly successful in homogeneous environments, it fails to address the needs of heterogeneous project workgroups which have neither the infrastructure nor the logistics to enforce a unifying framework.

This document presents a new approach towards the consolidation of multiple messaging structures (Emails, Blogs, Instant Message Transcripts, File Transfers/Sharing, Calendar Tasks and Events as well as their associated contacts and addresses) into an integrated framework that is accessible via subscriber services within projects. Furthermore, it will explore the possibilities of leveraging individual media properties (such as the concept of Presence in instant messaging) across the entire messaging framework as well as the introduction of intelligent agents that streamline message delivery through prioritized dispatching, scheduled delivery and error, event and task notification. The thesis will cover the implementation of an Intelligent Project Management Client (ILINK) as a working example of the integrated messaging framework (IMF) through the combined use of desktop components, web services, xml transmission schemas, and database storage. The document concludes with a retrospective analysis and an outline of milestones for the extension of the integrated message framework (IMF).

Повний текст джерелаPurpose: Corporations experience difficulties positioning themselves on the web as a result of not developing their websites in a way that is inline with their overall business strategy. The purpose of this study is to explore how corporations should apply design strategy, based on a user-centered design perspective, to support their overall business strategy on the web. Originality/value: This study has identified a knowledge gap in terms of how corporations define and apply design strategy in order to support their overall business strategy on the web. Methodology: This study aims to research the application of design strategy by creating a prototype through the use of a user-centered design process. This was done by interviewing experts as well as evaluating websites, in order to explore the domain of a car manufacturers retailers, which was based on the corresponding strategy of leading the visitor to the car manufacturers offerings that are represented by the retailers and their websites. This data collection was the foundation in the creation of a persona and context scenarios that was translated into identified needs that represented the products design strategy. The design strategy in turn was the foundation for the creating phase of the user-centered design process, where iterative design lead to refining framework sketches and an interactive prototype. Findings and conclusion: The study which resulted in an interactive prototype shows that user-centered design, which applies design strategy by defining the corporations and the users goals and needs, is an alternative that allows for structured refinement to the point that the website fulfills its design strategy. The results also show that depending on how well the domain exploration is executed as well as how well the design strategy is defined will affect the resulting website and to what extent it fulfills its purpose, whether it’s is still a prototype or if it’s the end result.

GM Powertrain Sweden where powertrains are designed and developed, two designs of a differential housing have been chosen for this thesis. The main tasks have been to perform a topology optimization of a model early in a design process, and a shape optimization on a model late in a design process. In addition the shape optimization strategies have also been applied on a fork shifter. This thesis covers the theory of different optimization strategies in general. The optimization processes are explained in detail and the results from the structural optimization of the differential housings as well as the fork shifter are shown and evaluated. The evaluation of the thesis provides enough arguments to suggest an implementation of the optimization strategies in design processes at GM Powertrain
. A Structural Optimization group has great potential of closing the gap between structural designers and structural analysis engineers which in long terms mean that better structures can be developed in less time. To be competitive in the automotive industry these are two of the most important factors for being successful.

Повний текст джерелаAlong those lines, we also found that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) lead to the paracrine conversion of CCL2 to an antagonist form capable of specifically inhibiting plasma cells and activated Th17 cells. This mechanistic insight informed the design of a second class of suppression fusokine. Namely, the fusing of antagonist CCL2 to GMCSF - aka GMME1. We tested its potential use in autoimmune diseases such as EAE and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We demonstrated that GMME1 leads to asymmetrical signalling and inhibition of plasma cells as well as Th17 EAE/RA-reactive CD4 T-cells. The net outcome of these pharmacological effects is the selective depletion of CCR2-reactive T-cells as demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.
Overall, our data support the use of our fusion proteins as part of a powerful and specific immunosuppressive strategy either as directly injectable protein biopharmaceuticals or through the ex vivo generation of autologous Bregs in the case of GIFT15.

Повний текст джерелаThe study explores the development of an activist animation brand, The Adventures of Soeperguava. As a lesbian anti-heroine, Soeperguava’s raison d'être is to expose and challenge discrimination – still prevalent in South Africa, twenty years after apartheid. Although human rights are entrenched in Chapter 2 (Section 2.1) of the South African Constitution and these rights exist on paper, myriad forms of prejudice persist within our society and need to be addressed. As a qualified legal scholar, brand strategy educator and brand development specialist, the author utilised Design Thinking methodology to identify brands as cultural artefacts. As such, brands are able to create meaning and effect social change. Design Thinking endeavours to address ‘wicked problems’, defined as social or cultural problems that are difficult or impossible to solve (Rittel 1967). This study explores the manner in which Design Thinking is applied to mitigate wicked problems through the development of a creative-activist brand. The researcher traces the development of the animation brand from its inception in December 2010 to its dissolution in March 2012. The research was conducted via a qualitative, illustrative, single case study methodology focused on Soeperguava. Elements of appreciative inquiry, journaling, lived experience, narrative and thematic analysis are included in the research. Design thinking, team dynamics and brand identity models are supplemented by open-ended questionnaire analyses. The selected methodologies aim to establish the reasons why the collaboration between an animator, a brand strategist, film producer, content producer and a writer failed. Subsequent rigorous analysis identified themes traversing three sets of data. These were refined into five meta-themes, the determining factors for effective brand development via a design thinking approach. The five meta-themes are: 1 collective buy-in; 2 in-depth, collective comprehension and commitment; 3 evolutionary leadership and management; 4 clarity and transparency; and 5 insightful reflection. For the purposes of this study, the research questions the role of Design Thinking and Team Dynamics within the context of brand development. A new model for collaboration is proposed as a framework for implementation in the 21st century. The model integrates and synthesises three key aspects: two Design Thinking models and a Team Dynamics model. Design Thinking is an under-researched topic in South Africa. This study reveals the need for further multi- and interdisciplinary research, identifying and discussing potential research opportunities.

Project management has three dimensional constraints: scope, schedule, and cost. The Agile project management framework is increasingly a challenge for cross-organizational teamwork, since the framework often results in strategy implementation deviation from the original strategic intent due to the three project constraints associated with teamwork. To bridge the gap between strategy and implementation, the Strategy-V Model is proposed as an adaptive framework to semantically inject Agile activities and interactions into Waterfall functional structures of strategy and implementation in software development extended organizations. To quantify such framework performance, new measures are proposed as sociotechnical sensors namely Project Emergent Value (PEV) and Project Utilization Value (PUV) using a fourth dimension of teamwork reward for project quality.
The Strategy-V Project Utilization Theorem is mathematically set forth as flexible options for the use of the new adaptive framework based on the sociotechnical sensors. The theorem is generalized to the Theory of Project Framework Utilization as a guideline to choose effective framework. Further work explores the Strategy-V Model variants in organizational strategy management and Flexible Strategy design under uncertainties. A case study shows the use of the Strategy-V Model in analyzing Open Source projects to advance the adaptive strategy formation. Open source as a corporate strategy has been redefining corporate innovations, saving development cost, and gaining faster time to market and larger market shares. A corporate open source project faces many uncertainties during strategy implementation such as effective contributions from external development community, projects dependencies, competitions, and economic impacts.
This research also proposes a Flexible Option design as a case study for corporate decision making that leverages corporate internal resources and investments to optimize strategy implementation across organizations.

En beprövad metod för att uttrycka design och intentionalitet är skapandet av ett gemensamt vokabulär. Game design patterns är ett försök att upprätta och formalisera just ett sådant vokabulär inom speldesign. Game design patterns är ett debatterat verktyg och detta arbetet ämnar undersöka den praktiska tillämpningen av ett pattern genom en kvantitativ studie för att stärka potentialen för en mer sammanhängande definition av termen. Detta utförs genom att först etablera ett game design pattern med hjälp av observation av RTS-spel. Sedan studeras det genom implementation i tre kommersiella RTS-spel. Resultatet fokuseras på kvantitativ data relaterat till pacing som insamlas från matcher mellan två AI. Genom analys av AI-matcherna kan det anses att game design pattern i en kontextualiserad inramning stöder teorin att använda design patterns som ett formellt designverktyg. Vidare drogs slutsatsen att användandet av AI också innebär begränsningar i hur tillämplig den insamlade datan är i den övergripande designen av spel. Fler studier med kvantitativ data ihop med kvalitativa observationer kan ytterligare stödja idén om game design pattern som ett användbart verktyg för både forskare och utvecklare inom spel.

The thesis that follows is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of intellectual property from a policy as well as a strategic perspective. While the discussion that follows is applicable to intellectual property in general, the focus of this thesis is on a particular aspect of intellectual property i.e patents. Policy and strategic perspectives are covered in section I and 11 respectively. The section on policy explores the origin and evolution of intellectual property related policies by discussing key legislation and court cases. The two questions that were most relevant when exploring the policy side of the patent system were: -- Is the intellectual property system hindering or encouraging innovation? -- What changes, if any, are required to make the system more effective? The section on strategy looks at IP strategies (or lack thereof) of three leading companies, Apple, Google and Microsoft. These three companies were selected because of their apparently differing strategies and this cursory judgement was confirmed when the strategies of the companies were put under a microscope. The question that were central while exploring the strategic aspects of intellectual property were: -- How are these three companies coping with the patent system as it exists today? -- What changes can make the strategies employed more effective? The summary section at the end tries to reconcile these two different ways of looking at the intellectual property system into a coherent whole.

In the thesis, I derive the optimal operating strategy to maximize the value of a storage facility by exploiting the properties in the underlying natural gas spot price. To achieve the objective, I investigate the optimal operating strategy under three different spot price processes: the one-factor mean reversion price process with and without seasonal factors, the one-factor geometric Brownian motion price process with and without seasonal factors, and the two-factor short-term/long-term price process with and without seasonal factors. I prove the existence of the unique optimal trigger prices, and calculate the trigger prices under certain conditions. I also show the optimal trigger prices are the prices where the marginal revenue is equal to the marginal cost. Thus, the marginal analysis argument can be used to determine the optimal operating strategy. Once the optimal operating strategy is determined, I use it to obtain the optimal value of the storage facility in three ways: 1, using directly the net present value method; 2, solving the partial differential equations governing the value of the storage facility; 3, using the Monte Carlo method to simulate the decision making process. Issues about parameter estimations are also considered in the thesis.

When we encounter statistics too far removed from our personal experience, we sometimes find it difficult to imagine the real implications of that data. While we might understand the information logically, it can be hard to relate it to our immediate personal lives. In this thesis, I investigate a novel visual representation for such data, which I call Personification of Information. This alternative form of data visualization incorporates real people within the viewer's immediate physical or social environment as part of the representation. The goal of this visualization technique is to bring information that is otherwise perceived as distant and detached closer to the viewer. This design strategy is explored in three artistic projects, "What If the World were your n Facebook friends?", "Unification-A Case Study?" And "What Was the Media Lab Thinking About In The Year _ _ _ ?" They are complemented by two projects from other areas that investigate Personification as a design strategy to bring the abstract closer to the individual: "Omnivisu" uses Personification as an interface to architecture; "Giving Character to Characters" applies the strategy to augment digital typography with human expression. Additionally I formalize the findings of these projects as a set of generalized design parameters for Personification of Information.

The need for "flexibility" of architecture has been increasing as recent social demands are rapidly changing. However, many buildings designed in the name of flexibility are blocky, boring, and actually quite inflexible because of incomplete systems, or simple bad planning. A space is designed and built to fulfill a certain request, and in order to perform properly, the space needs to be equipped with the proper systems such as lighting, acoustics, structural system, etc. At the same time, the segregation of functions, or the blind obedience of spatial organization to functions can potentially eliminate the true multi-functionality of a space. The double interpretations of spatial flexibility-- for function, for adaptation-- comprises a primary concern for me. On March 16, 2007, Junior High School 13 (M013) in Harlem, Manhattan was considered by the city of New York for closing. Under the existing education segregation problem in Manhattan, the shutting down of a school in Harlem does not only mean a failure of one institution, but it would further result in deterioration of nearby schools as a result of increased overcrowding. Additionally, considering the fact that the neighborhood school used to function as a community space in Harlem, the absence of M013 would make the community condition worse. Because of this, I propose a community-centered school by associating it with the concept of flexibility. The flexibility in this new architecture can be achieved by effectively arranging spaces and by manipulating the relationship between spaces. The flexibility does not result from the interchangeability or variability of the space, but from the changing the relationship between functions.

Taiwan Semiconductors industry prospers since some ten years ago. Thanks to TSMC foundry business model innovation, it fuels the growth of Semiconductors design houses businesses. Though, there are many design houses appear to be meteoric, which cannot sustain their market leadership position in very next generation. This study is to analyze Integrated Circuitry design houses strategies by focusing on three design houses: Mediatek and Via in Taiwan, and Broadcom in America. The study examines the research & development and marketing strategies of those companies, as well as their people management, culture build-up, and strategy execution. Derived from there, the empirical results show the generic strategy to position Integrated Circuitry design houses. The conclusion of this study is that IC design houses have to choose between cost oriented and technology/market oriented strategies. For design houses focusing on cost oriented strategy need to build strategic relationship with suppliers, and local R&D development to ensure their advantages on cost and speed to expand their product lines, so that they can reach the strategic goal of gaining high market share. The other strategic choice is to focus on technology and market. They have to build strategic relationship with key customers, excellent in merge and acquisition, and international R&D management to acquire technology breakthrough, setting industry standards, so to achieve high gross margin strategic goal.

Повний текст джерелаThe strategy and efficacy of applying computational tools to the development of new catalytic cycles is discussed using the enantioselective palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of secondary alcohols as a model case. The key interactions responsible for the unique reactivity of ((–)-sparteine)PdX2 complexes (X = chloride, acetate) in kinetic resolutions of secondary alcohols are elucidated using density functional theory with the Poisson-Boltzmann polarizable continuum solvent model. Enantioselectivities in these reactions are found to follow directly from calculated energies of diastereomeric beta-hydride elimination transition states incorporating (R) and (S) substrates. This relationship reveals an important role of the anion, namely to communicate the steric interaction of the ligand on one side of the PdII square plane and the substrate on the other side. When no anion is included, no enantioselectivity is predicted. Locating these transition states in different solvents shows that higher dielectrics stabilize the charge separation between the anion and metal and draw the anion farther into solution. Thus the solvent influences the barrier height (rate) and selectivity of the oxidation.
Based on this understanding, computational assays for selectivity, reaction rate and stability are developed and used to screen possible mimics of the natural product (–)-sparteine which could be synthesized in both antipodes. Derivatives of the bispidine and bispidinone structures are predicted to have high selectivity but poor stability on palladium. Experimental results verify that catalytically active (bispidine)PdX2 complexes do not form.
Mechanisms by which palladium diacetate complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes may oxidize alcohols (a reaction known to occur with no enantioselectivity) are examined computationally. The strong trans effect of the carbene distinguishes the behavior of these complexes from other palladium catalysts. No traditional beta-hydride elimination is predicted to be capable of generating the high deuterium kinetic isotope effect measured using this catalyst. Instead, the low-energy pathway consistent with previous experimental observations (KIE, activation parameters, kinetics) is a "reductive" beta-hydride elimination, in which the beta-hydrogen of the alcohol is transferred directly to a bound acetate ligand. Assuming that relative energies of transition states of this type will determine enantioselectivity, new, chiral carbene ligands are hypothesized and screened. Careful placement of stereocenters and steric bulk has led to ligands with high predicted enantioselectivity and stability.
Recurring factors in the induction of selectivity by asymmetric ligands are observed. Strengths and weaknesses of quantum chemistry as applied to catalytic cycles are discussed, along with the synergy of theory and experiment. Common pitfalls and areas in need of improvement are highlighted.

Personal and cultural value plays a major role in the development of bamboo products in Taiwan. Different eras have spawned different motifs. But the most significant development has been the successful transition of the local bamboo craft industry into a thriving export sector. Bamboo crafts, which used to be made by craftsmen out of necessity, have flourished over the years. They are even recognized now as a traditional art heritage. Close collaboration between the industry and some academic institutions has also yielded positive results. A case in point is the birth of the "Yii" brand, which has promoted a number of products so far and is expected to become an important asset that could enhance the industry’s future success. Throughout the history of bamboo craft making on the island, local craftsmen have constantly injected special value in the development of bamboo products. This can be summed up into the following design strategies: (1) Adding value through product designs; (2) incorporating special characteristics into products; and (3) implementing five “sleep awareness” design guidelines in the production process. Consequently, three sets of design experiments have confirmed that these strategies are viable. But despite these design strategies, along with the input gathered from personal experiences and academic data references, local craftsmen have continually relied on creating value by blending the rich cultural assets of Taiwan in the development of bamboo crafts for daily life.

Businesses are faced with serious obstacles as global economic growth slows. They must constantly reinvent themselves in order to sustainably develop in this ultra-competitive environment. Taiwanese enterprises have moved past the OEM stage with the establishment of their own brands. However, the key to global and sustainable development lies in design leadership. To accomplish this goal, enterprises must be committed to think innovatively about their future strategies. Therefore, now the most important issue is how enterprises integrate design leadership and design thinking into their future innovation strategies to enhance their competitiveness. This study selected four successful enterprises using design leadership for literature review and analysis. A hypothesis about design thinking being used for innovation strategy was made. Through in-depth interviews and secondary data analysis, three conclusions were reached. (1) Design Leadership: using people as the focal point, emphasizing user experience and demands, management support for design, and participation by team leaders during the design process are all essential to the success rate of a project; (2) Innovative Strategies: a clearly-defined organizational structure and independent budget organization both help plan requirements for a target product. Design-related research is conducted using user experience to find out future innovation directions. Creative ideas are formed through workshops and collected to create a database. Design is thus conceptualized for management to make decisions on future strategies. (3) Company Culture: using people as the focal point, team chemistry is achieved through constant innovation fused with aesthetic concepts. This chemistry in turn grants the company a better competitive edge.

Due to price competition and low sales performance, development of consumer solar products has gradually slowed down in recent years. Concerned about this phenomenon, this study collected literature in technical, industrial, and consumer behavior perspectives and constructed a purchase decision model to analyze selected products and propose design strategies to cope with this phenomenon. The first section of this study was to analyze the bottlenecks in the development of consumer solar products. Products were classified into four types, including A1a (the existing product requires power, which can be replaced by solar energy), A1b (the existing product requires power, which can be assisted by solar energy), A2 (the existing product does not require power), and B (not attached to any existing product). Results showed that designers of the present consumer solar products are excessively focused on satisfaction of consumer’s material needs. As to high-end needs, they only highlight the environmental benefits of solar energy. As a result, A1a and B products are sold under intense competition due to high homogeneity with same types of products; A1b and A2 products are weaker than same types of products in satisfying high-end needs and are thus less competitive. This study proposed a hypothesis that “consumer solar product’s competitiveness and market transparency can be increased by strengthening the product’s symbolic characteristics and enhancing satisfaction of consumer’s high-end needs”. The second section was to test the design strategy through a small workshop. Two variables were used, including “adoption of the design strategy” and “product type”. Designers were divided into the experimental group (using the design strategy) and the control group (not using the design strategy). Both groups needed to propose design concepts for A1b and B respectively. Some well-known designers were later invited to evaluate these designs in three aspects, including “product characteristics”, “competitiveness”, and “solar energy promotion effect”, on a Likert scale. The results showed: (1) The experimental group received significantly higher scores than the control group in “product characteristics”. (2) The experimental group received significantly higher scores than the control group in “competitiveness”, indicating that the design strategy could effectively enhance the competitiveness of these two types of products. (3) Interactive effects were found between two variables from the scores in the “solar energy promotion effect”. B product designed by the experimental group was given significantly higher scores than the B product by the control group. But the effect of design strategy was not significantly between A product designed by the experimental and control group. Conclusions were as follows: (1) The current consumer solar products are focused on satisfaction of consumer’s material needs but weak in satisfying high-end needs (2) The design strategy that enhances the product’s symbolic characteristics can help B type of products more competitive with same types of products. (3) Product attributes affect the effect of the design strategy, so manufacturers should carefully select the items to be developed according to their expected goals. (4) The solar energy industry should develop toward branding and providing channel service to make up their current insufficiency.

Epoch-making “design” seeks the uniqueness of the product and the sustainable competitiveness. A brand combines the core values of corporate development and product service. Innovative products with good design models can convey unique brand identification to customers, enhance their purchase willingness, improve the added values of products and services, and be distinguished in business competition with high brand identification. What role does design and innovation play in the brand development? How could a brand become familiar to customers through brand strategy, and how could the products and service be improved through brand development? How do companies use design strategy to establish new directions for the brand? This paper discusses the brand innovation model based on design strategy, and adopts methods of literature review and case study to find the design strategies adopted by companies for different brand orientations, as well as the influence of the existence of brand innovation. It also discusses the involvement of design in modes of Brand development during the brand innovation process, and the strategies during the execution process. The results are as follows: 1) through literature review, generalize the influences of design on brand innovation in the company, and establish 6 management models the affect the brand innovation; 2) discuss the strategic applications of different goal-oriented successful brands; 3) compare difference of strategies of goal-oriented brands in management models; 4) the influence of the execution of design on brand innovation. This study analyzes the design execution of different brand innovations, in order to discuss the influences of design on brand innovation. The results are hoped to provide revolutionary models with design strategies in the brand innovation projects. Innovation design is an emerging force, which is strong enough to overturn market rules. Many discussions have shown the importance of industrial design to brands, and confirmed the significant effects of design on brand values. Design should become a core force, and combines with identified targets and strategies management in the brand innovation process to create the maximum competitiveness. Therefore, this study probes into successful brands to find out about the management models for executing brand innovation and answers to creating successful brands. It hopes to provide confidence to companies in establishing brands, and more opportunities to competitive advantages.

In the past 30 years, the conservation of natural environment comes to the fore as a global problematique for the distribution of energy and for the vital of human race. The built environment industry which is responsible for at last half of annual global consumption of energy and the provinces of architectonics devoted an urgent issue that is, how to fit a harmonious integration between the nature and the human habitat. In the current of the Green Building developing, Taiwan’s green construct progression was depended on a series of the official process. In 2000, The Green Building Evaluation System ( EEWH ) was constituted by Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of The Interior, to assist on the Taiwan green building improvement. In view of the dominance of EEWH to Taiwan’s Green Building, the thesis sets out to study those approved cases of Green Building found in the fiscal year 2003-2006, including ten projects: four educational institutions, three house projects, three office buildings. The purpose is to establish a normative investigation on the green design strategy which applied EEWH to figure out the influence of the green practice situation today. There are two main circumstances of the Taiwan’s Green Building practice: 1. There has no constructive evaluate rating standard in EEWH to encourage designers or architects to deal with the spatial issue of green solution; 2. The efficiency of equipment systems and technologies are turned into the primary principles of the Taiwan Green Building rating system. Taiwanese designer’s activities are restricted by this inevitable situation. The thesis aims to discover the inherent constraint of EEWH and the variation of the Green Buildings, ratified by EEWH, to sum up a pertinence suggestion on the green practice nowadays.
