The high economic development in Vietnam contributes much momentum to boost the estate industry in this country. However, competition in this market is also increased. To survive better in this industry, the estate companies in the Vietnam estate industry can apply strategic alliance which, however, depends heavily on forming the right partnership. For this purpose, a hybrid approach combining Grey Theory with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been proposed in this research to assess and predict the performance of some Vietnamese estate companies, in addition to helping to form the right partnership. For empirical study, 16 companies in the Vietnam estate industry have been selected as Decision Making Units (DMUs). After collecting these DMUs’ historical data in the time period 2012-2017, the grey model GM (1,1) was first used to forecast the performance of these DMUs in 2018-2020. Then, the slacks-based measure (SBM) super efficiency (super SBM) model was used to assess their performance. To initiate partnerships, Becamex Infrastructure Development Joint Stock Company (IJC) has been selected as a target company and it can develop 15 different strategic alliance scenarios. The experimental results show that only some of the scenarios are beneficial. Thus, prudence is a necessity when using strategic alliance.

Innovative mechanisms of global governance are increasingly common, yet they defy easy categorization. The Alliance of Civilizations, a UN initiative that seeks to promote intercultural dialogue, is one such example. It is a hybrid entity that exhibits elements of networks, international organizations, and public–private partnerships, among other things. Only when we shift our gaze to its patterned activities do we discover that it might best be understood as a community of practice specializing in global-level public diplomacy. Practice-based analysis, therefore, allows a deeper understanding of the Alliance and, in turn, prompts a fresh consideration of an increasingly important form of diplomacy. I argue, in particular, that public diplomacy is not solely a national-level, state-oriented activity. In turn, this inquiry invites practice theorists to reflect on the degree of fit required to associate a unique social form with an identifiable set of patterned activities.

The purpose of this study examines whether the strategic alliance affects the organizational form, managerial strategy, market engagement, and performance and how these variables interact in order to become a mutually beneficial partnership. The study took place in Indonesia, especially in Java, to the parties related to the strategic alliance between PT Transportasi Jakarta and bus operators in investment and management of Busway in DKI Jakarta. The study took place is in Indonesia especially Java Island and not only in DKI Jakarta. Findings in this study is have significant and positive effect on organizational form, in other hands, the strategic alliance has a non-signifncant effect to performance, managerial strategy, and market engangement. The novelty in this study is the market engagement variable examined by looking at the relationship between the strategic alliance and market engagement, managerial strategy and market engagement, and market engagement and performance.

Objectives. The research aims to investigate how firms can achieve alliance success. In global markets, the alliance failure rate is very high. This study will try to understand why, facing with such a high failure rate, more and more firms decide to enter or form strategic alliances. It appears necessary to identify key factors and show how firms can successfully manage them in each phase of alliance lifecycle.Methodology. For this study, a qualitative approach was adopted, in order to explore and understand the research problem. The issues of alliance success factors is investigated through the analysis of the existing literature, focusing in particular on the last two decades.Findings. By reviewing several theoretical perspectives, we identified alliance success factors and showed what kind of relevance they have in each phase of alliance lifecycle. It was found that strategic alliances develop through three phases. Alliance success lies on successful management of key factors, involved in each phase.Research Limits. Research deals with the issues of alliance success factors at the level of a single alliance and not at the level of an alliance portfolio. Further research should extend the analysis perspective.Managerial Implications. Firms involved in a strategic alliance should consider several critical aspects. For the entire alliance lifecycle, they have to look for a high degree of fit with their own partners. Another important aspect is related to the risk of opportunistic behavior, which could be reduced through the choice of an appropriate governance form and the development of social capital.

This paper applies the principles of transaction cost economics to the strategic management of firms’ external alliances. External alliances span a spectrum from simple transactional relationships to outright control. Each of these alliance types requires a different degree of monetary and managerial investment. The paper shows that the optimal form of alliance aligns the governance capabilities of firm management with the attributes of the alliance relationship. We regard its approach as particularly relevant for cross-border alliances, especially when the legal and regulatory systems differ between the two countries

Since the rise of strategic alliances which play such an important role in industry today, the biopharmaceutical industry worldwide has entered an era of rapid change and collaborative thinking. The strategic alliance is one of the most important strategies for the green biopharmaceutical industry. Member organizations in these alliances work together to create more advantageous biotechnologies based on environmental protection to achieve mutual benefits. In the past, there have been only a few studies discussing partner evaluations and the selection process for the green biopharmaceutical industry, so the criteria or indicators are still not complete. Therefore, this study proposes a novel multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework for strategic alliance partner evaluation that combines the best-worst method (BWM) and the fuzzy TOPSIS technique based on the concept of aspiration level (called fuzzy TOPSIS-AL) to evaluate the performance and priority rankings of strategic alliance partners. The BWM overcomes the shortcomings of small sample sizes and streamlines the number of conventional pairwise comparisons needed. The fuzzy TOPSIS-AL technique introduces the concept of the aspiration level, thereby leading to more reasonable suggestions for improvement. In addition, data from a multinational green biopharmaceutical company survey are utilized to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed model.

Purpose While previous research has developed unclear positions about the role of organizational resources on alliance formation, the purpose of this paper is to focus on financial slack resources to clarify the conditions that facilitate the formation of strategic alliances. Building on the behavioral theory of the firm, this paper theorizes that internal and external financial slack resources, measured as cash holdings and financial leverage, incentivize managers to form alliances, because they protect them against the risk of alliance failure. Design/methodology/approach Complete data were collected from 400 biotech public companies for the period from 2000 to 2015. The data set considered alliances among over 2,200 public and private companies. Hypothesis testing relied on generalized estimating equations. Findings Cash holdings positively impact alliance formation; financial leverage negatively impacts alliance formation; cash holdings and financial leverage interact in the prediction of alliance formation. Research limitations/implications While research in financial slack resources shows equivocal results, this study illustrates that they exercise a significant effect when it comes to the choice of forming strategic alliances. Limitations include the focus on multiple forms of alliances, possible restrictions in the external validity of the findings, and a lack of measurement of explanatory mechanisms. Practical implications Findings help managers understand the financial conditions in which they should choose to form or avoid alliances; findings help managers select alliance partners. Originality/value The study contributes by proposing a new outlook on alliances; identifying financial resources as alliance predictors when previous research focused on intangible resources; offering new insights into the often equivocal outcomes of financial slack; building an uncharted bridge between the finance and alliance literatures.

The objective of this paper is to develop a dynamic theory of interorganizational learning and knowledge acquisition in strategic alliances. Strategic alliances are becoming an increasingly important organizational form to gain access to new knowledge and to leverage existing knowledge. By establishing an alliance with one or more partners, an organization will gain valuable learning opportunities to acquire knowledge and to enhance its competitiveness. The degree to which the partners can realize their learning objectives is dependent on their absorptive capacities and the collaborative strategies adopted by the partners. These collaborative strategies may include the trust between alliance partners as well as the willingness to share existing knowledge. In order to gain insights into the dynamics of interorganizational learning and knowledge acquisition, the authors propose a simulation model to test different conditions influencing the outcome of an alliance. The results can improve our understanding of the key factors that influence the acquisition of knowledge in strategic alliances. The paper concludes with a discussion of guidelines to assess and manage the outcome of strategic alliances.

Le but des travaux est de montrer par quels moyens et procédés stratégiques et organisationnels les firmes des secteurs intensifs en nouvelles technologies et en innovation font face à la spécificité des actifs et aux dynamiques propres à la mondialisation de l’économie. La Nouvelle économie institutionnelle guide nos travaux à travers l’approche de la firme utilisée qui est d’essence contractualiste et qui s’appuie sur les travaux de l’Economie des Coûts de transaction et de la Théorie des Contrats incomplets. Cependant d’autres approches de la firme sont abordées afin de pallier aux écueils identifiés au sein de l’approche contractualiste et d’enrichir la portée académique des travaux. De surcroît, la notion d’alliance stratégique est très importante dans nos travaux et nous permet d’opérer une articulation entre les concepts d’Organisation et de Marché afin de mettre en lumière certaines dynamiques propres à la firme dans une économie de marché. Par ailleurs la thèse aborde également les alliances stratégiques sous les deux autres angles suivants : à la fois celui de la multinationalisation des firmes innovantes, ainsi que sur celui de la réponse organisationnelle que constituent les alliances stratégiques face aux spécificités propres aux secteurs innovants. La Théorie des jeux et le concept d’équilibre de Nash peuvent nous aider à modéliser ou à décrire la dynamique des firmes du secteur des télécommunications. La dynamique de d’autres secteurs innovants est étudiée à travers la notion d’alliance stratégique. L’influence des décisions et politiques publiques en matière de règlementation des télécommunications et d’impulsion de l’innovation est aussi évoquée. L’influence des politiques publiques peut se voir notamment en matière de concurrence lorsque le régulateur public autorise dans les secteurs innovants des firmes concurrentes à coopérer en amont en matière de recherche et développement. D’ailleurs des modèles de recherche et développement seront présentés. Il est à noter que les travaux de thèse intègrent des données empiriques faisant état du poids des secteurs intensifs en recherche et développement et donc de l’innovation dans l’économie. Le champ géographique couvert par ces données empiriques est continental et/ou international.La thèse permet donc à partir de la notion d’alliance stratégique de détailler des procédés organisationnels et des stratégies comportementales (modèle de jeux) encourageant : l’innovation, le maintien d’une forte spécificité des actifs et la réactivité nécessaire aux firmes dans une économie mondialisée. Nous donnons les formes organisationnelles les mieux adaptées pour faire face à une forte spécificité des actifs dans le secteur des télécommunications. Il s’agit de la firme (post-fusion) et de la joint-venture relationnelle concernant cette dernière nous démontrons que la présence de contrats relationnels permet de réduire la volonté de renégociation et est une protection contre l’opportunisme contractuel
The aim of the thesis is to show what are the means and strategic and organizational processes the firms of the sectors highly intense in new IT and innovation use to cope with to asset specificity and to the dynamics of the globalisation of the economy. The New Institutional Economics (NIE) leads our work thanks to the conception of the firm used which is based essentially on a contractualist approach which uses the works of the transaction cost economics and of theory of the incomplete contracts; however other approaches of the firms are evocated in order to enrich the academical view of our thesis. Moreover, the notion of strategic alliance is very important for our work, and it allows us to operate an articulation between the concepts of Organization and the Market for put in the light some firm’s dynamics in a market economy. Furthermore, the thesis concerns the strategic alliances under two other following perspectives: the first one is the multinationalization of the innovative firms, and the second one concerns the organizational response that establish the strategic alliances to cope with the specificities of the innovative sectors. The game theory and the concept of Nash equilibrium can help us to model ou describe the dynamic of the firms belonging the sector of telecommunications. The dynamic of other innovative sectors is studied through the notion of strategic alliance. The influence of the decisions and the public policies concerning the telecommunication regulation and the impulse of the innovation is evocated too. The influence of public policies can be seen particularly concerning the competition when the public regulator allows in the innovative sectors the competing firms to cooperate in upstream (for example research and development joined). Some research and developments models are presented in the thesis. It is important to note that the thesis has empirical data highlighting the weight of the sectors highly intense in research and development and so showing the weight of the innovation in the economy. The geographical field covers by these data is international The thesis thanks to the notion of strategic alliance enables to retail the organizational processes and the behavioral strategies (models of game) strengthening the innovation, enabling to cope with to a strong asset specificity and explaining the firms’ responses in a globalized economy. We finish in providing the organizational forms the most adapted for cope with to the strong specificity of the sector of telecommunications. There are the firm (post-merger) and the relational joint venture concerning this latter we demonstrate that the presence of relational contracts enables to reduce the will to renege and is a protection against the contractual opportunism

In the first part of this thesis, we study revenue management in resource exchange alliances. We first show that without an alliance the sellers will tend to price their products too high and sell too little, thereby foregoing potential profit, especially when capacity is large. This provides an economic motivation for interest in alliances, because the hope may be that some of the foregone profit may be captured under an alliance. We then consider a resource exchange alliance, including the effect of the alliance on competition among alliance members. We show that the foregone profit may indeed be captured under such an alliance. The problem of determining the optimal amounts of resources to exchange is formulated as a stochastic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints. We demonstrate how to determine whether there exists a unique equilibrium after resource exchange, how to compute the equilibrium, and how to compute the optimal resource exchange. In the second part of this thesis, we study the estimation of risk measures in risk management. In the financial industry, sell-side analysts periodically publish recommendations of underlying securities with target prices. However, this type of analysis does not provide risk measures associated with underlying companies. In this study, we discuss linear regression approaches to the estimation of law invariant conditional risk measures. Two estimation procedures are considered and compared; one is based on residual analysis of the standard least squares method and the other is in the spirit of the M-estimation approach used in robust statistics. In particular, Value-at-Risk and Average Value-at-Risk measures are discussed in detail. Large sample statistical inference of the estimators is derived. Furthermore, finite sample properties of the proposed estimators are investigated and compared with theoretical derivations in an extensive Monte Carlo study. Empirical results on the real data (different financial asset classes) are also provided to illustrate the performance of the estimators.

The development of Vietnam economy reaches 10 years high of 7.3%, in relation to General Statistics Office. Not only the macroeconomic stability, but also the steady growth in the real estate sector that we observe. With the bigger demand, the smaller supply; the fee of real estate to transport in Vietnam is tend to get higher in recent years with many success deals in 2016 and 2017. Yet, the investors doubt that this period would be everlasting or it is just temporary. Therefore, the thorough analysis should be put into consideration when evaluating to ensure the best Return on Investment (ROI). Thus, the purpose of this research is to provide an assessment model based on Grey theory GM (1,1) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) helping the target company to make a well-considered decision in finding the right partners. At the same time, the study also provides the prediction about firms’ business in the future, which is relevant for them when setting strategies for production capacity planning and for investment decision making whether should expand their business in international market or not. To implement the empirical research, the study starts to form virtual alliance and then executes DEA calculation. By combining the IJC (Becamex Infrastructure Development Joint Stock Company) with the rest of DMUs, the research gets 31 virtual alliances totally. Especially, KBC is the best potential candidate for strategic alliance because the difference is the biggest (15). Therefore, this thesis can summarize that the strategic alliances not always can help firms increase their efficiency. Blindly proceeding strategic alliances may cause the company lose their overall competitiveness. The crucial thing in implementing strategic alliance is that enterprise should consider different aspects to get benefits. Once strategic alliance is considered and treated carefully and properly, firm’s operation efficiency is surely raised.

With the rapid aging of the population, in Taiwan, it has brought forth the need of long-term care and hence, the accelerated increase in the number of institutions founded. On the contrary to this demand, the system is facing various predicaments. The mounting pressures from competitors, as well as the need to raise the standards of service, is taking its toll on the operation of institutions and hence, forcing management not to overlook the viability of co-operative programs between organizations. The aim of this study was to investigate the status and characteristics of organizations of long-term care for the elderly, in northern Taiwan, and explore the disposition of the organizations for strategic alliance, as well as other factors. Furthermore, the study aims to provide specific suggestions at the level of management for future governmental reference and, in the long term, to provoke alternative thoughts on management in the industry. This investigate adopted the method of Cross-Sectional Study, surveying 517 elderly care institutes in northern Taiwan by mail. 403 valid surveys were returned, an effective return rate of 78.9%. Major findings of this study are as follows: 1. A 50.3% of the care institutes have had collaborations prior to this study, and were only mildly satisfied with the overall co-operation. 2. Institution operatives had more thorough understanding regarding long-term care (av. 1.64-1.96%) but were less clear on strategic alliance (av. 1.22-1.32%). 3. A 66.1% of the care institutes were willing to form strategic alliance in order to boost competitiveness (28.3%), expand their range of service (23.9%) and, improve the efficiency of the use of resources (15.5%). 4. Amongst those willing to comply with alliances, cooperative research alliances were most highly favored (84.1%) over management alliances (80.7%), and financial alliances were least favored (37.6%). 5. Of those inclined to form alliances, hospitals (60.3%), foster cares bodies (12.6%) and physiotherapeutic institutions (10.9%) were found to be the preferred subject for collaboration. The individuals preferred are doctors (41.5%), nursing staff (22.0%), and physiotherapists (9.8%). 6. Major factors affecting the willingness of long-term elderly care bodies to form alliances include: the age of the management staff, primary working motives, and the occupying rate at the long-term care institution. 7. Tendencies in relationships between the fundamental characteristics of the operatives and the form of strategic alliance: I、 Female operatives were more inclined, than male operatives, to adopt alliances in the reciprocal aiding of resources and, information exchange. II、 All age groups within the age of 65 were more inclined than age groups 66 and above to form alliances in the purchase of resources. III、 Operatives with non-nursing-related education backgrounds were more inclined, than operatives with nursing-related education backgrounds, to form alliances in management. 8. Tendencies in relationships between the fundamental characteristics of care institutions and the form of strategic alliance: I、 Non-registered care institutions were more inclined, than registered care institutions, to adopt alliances in the reciprocal aiding of human resources. II、 Non-juridical funded care institutions were more inclined, than juridical funded care institutions, to adopt alliances in the form of partnerships and combined purchasing of resources. III、 Registered care institutions were more inclined, than non-registered care institutions, to form alliances in the exchange of information.

At the heart of the book is a radical vision of a technology-enabling future European defence built around a new kind of Atlantic alliance, an innovative strategic public–private partnership, and the future hyper-electronic European force it must spawn. The geopolitical and strategic landscape in Europe has transformed fundamentally under the Russian challenge to the Transatlantic Alliance. The alliance response to the annexation of Crimea and Russian hybrid warfare in Ukraine strengthened and demonstrated resolve on the part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the Baltic states and Poland with an Enhanced Forward Presence of rotational troops. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall and disintegration of the Soviet Union, NATO has accepted new members that pursued democracy, free markets, rule of law, and human rights as well as a stable European and international order. The future of Transatlantic relations will be impacted by European defense spending, the implications of U.K. withdrawal from the European Union, Russian foreign policy, and the ability of the Atlantic Alliance to move from assurance to a strong deterrence and defense posture in the East and at the same time confront the challenges from the south. The chapter addresses the major challenges to transatlantic security, focuses on the UK, France, and Germany and lays out future challenges.

Nations have powerful reasons to get their military alliances right. When security pacts go well, they underpin regional and global order; when they fail, they spread wars across continents as states are dragged into conflict. We would, therefore, expect states to carefully tailor their military partnerships to specific conditions. This expectation, Raymond C. Kuo argues, is wrong. Following the Leader argues that most countries ignore their individual security interests in military pacts, instead converging on a single, dominant alliance strategy. The book introduces a new social theory of strategic diffusion and emulation, using case studies and advanced statistical analysis of alliances from 1815 to 2003. In the wake of each major war that shatters the international system, a new hegemon creates a core military partnership to target its greatest enemy. Secondary and peripheral countries rush to emulate this alliance, illustrating their credibility and prestige by mimicking the dominant form. Be it the NATO model that seems so commonsense today, or the realpolitik that reigned in Europe of the late nineteenth century, a lone alliance strategy has defined broad swaths of diplomatic history. It is not states' own security interests driving this phenomenon, Kuo shows, but their jockeying for status in a world periodically remade by great powers.

This chapter begins with the arrival of Nokia’s first non-Finnish CEO and his frank assessment of Nokia’s situation being akin to a man on a burning oil platform. It describes his strategy to form an alliance with Microsoft in a bid to create a third ecosystem to compete against Apple and Android. This strategy rapidly failed, leading to significant losses and the ultimate demise of Nokia’s phone business with its sale to Microsoft. The chapter also describes how, under new chairmanship, the board began to play a much stronger strategic role which resulted in the rebirth of Nokia as one of the world’s leading telecoms infrastructure players.

This chapter details the challenge European states face in confronting conventional interstate warfare in the post-cold-war era. The European continent has been the site of several interstate conflicts featuring conventional operations since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and European militaries have fought in a number of similar wars waged outside the region. Conventional interstate wars are likely to manifest quite differently in the future from the way they did in the past, sometimes taking the form of ‘hybrid’ wars that involve irregular fighters and strategies alongside more traditional soldiers and efforts, but they will not disappear from the European security landscape in the near to medium term. Accordingly, while there is considerable room for improvement in the strategic allocation of resources, European states’ decisions to spend considerable sums on weaponry, equipment, and training programmes designed to maintain or improve their fighting capabilities in conventional operations are warranted.

AbstractBoth China and Russia are heavyweights in multilateral Geneva. While their priorities and strategies are not identical, their interests are often aligned in many forums. Thus, close cooperation can be observed in several Geneva-based organizations. In some, such as the UN Human Rights Council, China and Russia form the backbone of an increasingly assertive “autocratic alliance.” Particularly China has attempted to establish a counter-narrative on questions of democracy, human rights, and international law. This article outlines some factors that increased the effect of Chinese-Russian cooperation, but also depicts its limits. Cooperation between Russia and China is often defensive rather than proactive and not (yet) based on a joint long-term strategy. However, it is a tactical alliance that is, and will likely remain, a major challenge for the proponents of a rules- and values-based multilateralism even though Russia’s war in Ukraine will further shift the balance in this alliance towards China. This article argues in favor of stronger engagement in UN forums by the West and outlines possibilities for how the growing influence of this tandem can be countered.

The objective of this chapter was to understand how a “hybrid organization” (two automobile manufacturers Renault and Nissan within a strategic alliance) uses social networking and Web 2.0 tools to collaborate not only inside traditional organizational boundaries and within the alliance structure but also across geographical frontiers. Nissan has gradually lost its historic status as keiretsu as a result of its strategic alliance with the Renault. This alliance has had numerous consequences for the organizational structure of Nissan, even though both companies have maintained their identity by maintaining the two brands internationally. KM practices have evolved since the beginning of the strategic alliance. Two phases can be considered. During the first three years of the alliance, the two car manufacturers relied mainly on their own specific KM practices and processes. The second phase started in 2004 with the development of KM 2.0 and Web 2.0 tools. The adoption of these tools by Renault has led to increased collaboration between the two manufacturers.

After the landmark annexation of Crimea and eruption of hybrid war in the Donbas, some states that in the past used to be under Soviet domination began to ask their stronger NATO allies for increased military presence in the Alliance Eastern flank. The worsening security environment in the Eastern Europe, the fear against potential swift Russian incursion, the relative weakness of Eastern European armies, the significant strategic exposure of the Baltic states, these factors influenced the Alliance's decision to augment NATO military presence in the states bordering Russia. Actions like deployment of additional battalions, prepositioning of heavy military equipment, intensified joint multinational military drills are intended to reassure the most vulnerable NATO member states and to deter Moscow from taking too audacious and too assaultive measures. The author shortly describes the actions NATO has made since 2014 in order to strengthen its military presence in the Eastern flank with particular emphasis on U.S.-enhanced forward presence in the region.

Chapter 2 develops neoclassical realist theory. It explicates how the two systemic variables—the current distribution of power in a region and the time horizons for threats to the hegemon’s interests in that region—can create incentives for US presidential administrations to favor coercive or accommodative strategies toward a vulnerable ally seeking nuclear weapons. When confronted with such high domestic mobilization hurdles to their preferred strategies, however, administrations will pursue hybrid strategies—ones that combine accommodative and coercive elements—toward an ally. This chapter unpacks the measurement of the variables and the types of empirical evidence that might confirm or disconfirm the hypotheses. It also outlines three alternative explanations (nuclear domino theory, security commitment theory, and credible sanctions theory) and the types of evidence that might confirm or disconfirm their hypotheses.

This chapter further explores Wartime networking across geo-political borders for intelligence collaboration and anti-Japanese propaganda campaigns, and probes the impact of Chongqing’s perceptions of India on its planning to form alliances and exercise diplomacy, determined largely by India’s strategic position and by the fact that the decolonization of India and its independence would enable India to join the war and thus help safeguard Chinese interests.

The objective of this chapter is to examine how different types of IS resource alignments affect the performance of alliances via the contribution of dissimilar and similar IS resources. The focus of this study is small healthcare centers in Taiwan. These small healthcare centers have formed alliances to confront the fierce competition as well as to absorb the regulatory pressure from the government. Most of these small healthcare centers in recent years have realized that they can only compete with major healthcare service providers through cooperative alliances, as most of the patients prefer to go to big service providers for longterm treatments. The literature on interorganizational collaborations has been criticized for its relatively narrow concentration on large firms and for ignoring SMEs’ alliances where large firms do not operate in similar ways (Prater & Ghosh, 2005). These cost pressures, together with the general dynamic nature of the healthcare industry, require a significant change in approaches to utilize IS resources by these small healthcare centers. Therefore, these small healthcare centers must form alliances to obtain scarce IS resources. Unlike large firms that own a lot of IS resources to be able to form alliances with many partners, these small healthcare centers tend to form alliances with only a small number of partners, and therefore, their dependence on these partners is higher than large firms (Mambula, 2002). In this regard, these small Taiwanese healthcare centers offer an appropriate context for research.

Strategic Alliances (SAs) have been formed by firms to attain strategic objectives which alone firms were unable to secure. Typically, firms formed SAs to gain market share or to seek innovation and research and development capabilities form the partnering firm. In the extant literature, market seeking SAs have been viewed as defensive while innovation and research and development capabilities seeking SAs as an aggressive strategy. In this research, the authors conducted a study of 165 strategic alliances cases in the Indian business scenario to study the motives of SAs. This study classified SAs formed by the top 50 firms listed on India's National Stock Exchange (NSE) (NIFTY50 index) into different categories. Inferences and findings have been drawn using content analysis of the available dataset. It was observed that, out of the 165 unique cases of SAs, a substantial number of SAs could be classified as ‘business alliances' focusing on the market seeking from the alliance partner.

The chapter looks into the Athenians' desire not to initiate a general war with the Spartan alliance and to defend the territorial integrity of Corcyra. It also mentions how Pericles urged to form a defensive alliance with the Corcyraeans an epimachía in order to deter Corinthian aggression.

Sociologists have for many years explored the value of social capital, or the resources embedded in social relations and social network structures. In recent years, organizational forms such as strategic alliances and network organizations have been an important new form of entrepreneurial venture, particularly in business markets. An important and often overlooked type of alliance on the Internet is what we call the “elusive alliance”. These alliances are not formally acknowledged, they are difficult to identify and can often be unknown, even to the members of the alliance themselves. They consist of informal links and social networks on the Internet—unspoken connections and codes of conduct that are extremely valuable because of the social capital embedded in them. This chapter aims to find ways to formally identify and expand these alliances in entrepreneurial ways that will improve their effectiveness, usefulness and ultimately, their social capital, translated into financial returns. We use Social Network Theory as the framework to study these networks.

With the apparent demise of globalization, many states are turning to regional solutions to achieve trade and development goals while institutional structure is fundamental to the strategic and managerial operations of such associations. This study seeks to understand the strategic costs and benefits, as well as the management opportunities and challenges, of a regional institution that maintains an informal structure while specifically examining the relationship between informal regional structure and member (national) resilience. This investigation develops a resilience framework and tests it against a unique structural form, the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru), which operates without incorporation as a legal entity, without a centralized budget, and without a secretariat. This study reasons that an informal regional institution supports national resilience through an adaptation strategy but not an adaptability strategy and concludes that an informal regional model appears to support continual national development through the adoption of member ‘best practice'.

In this study, strategic alliances are discussed from the perspective of hospitality industry and inter organizational relation factors that regulate the formation of strategic alliances have been revealed in hospitality industry. In addition, the relations between inter organizational relation factors, knowledge sharing and organizational innovativeness are raised within the scope of the literature and a model is proposed. In this context, with review of literature, relation factors between hospitality businesses that affects knowledge sharing are examined. These factors are specified as inter organizational trust, the intention of learning, shared vision, communication, (partner-specific) absorptive capacity and commitment. Knowledge sharing and innovativeness variables are especially important in terms of competitive advantage in the market for hospitality strategic alliances. Thus, the main problem of the study is to investigate the relationships between all of these variables.

Many companies and organizations in the labor market are facing “War for talents”. In order to acquire new, and retain existing employees, and, at the same time, to be considered the best employer on the market, more and more organizations are building and managing their own brand of employer. The employer’s branding is most often associated with the activities of Mar­keting and Human Resources management experts; but, in practice, it often turns out that in the process, an indispensable partner in building the employ­er’s branding is ignored, i.e. communication experts. Therefore, in this article, we defend the position that employer branding is also a communication skill, which, however, needs to be adapted to the current situation in these turbu­lent times associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes digitizing and adapting employer branding communication to both the needs of target groups and the requirements of digital processes. Therefore, the paper exam­ined the societal change in work norms caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, to contribute to a more successful and efficient branding of the modern employ­er as a form of strategic communication in both the virtual and hybrid work environments.

<p>Knitted fabrics are rarely subjected to tensile stress tests in the field of architectural construction materials, mostly due to their common use as drapery. However, recent non-standard applications of tensioned knitted textiles to hybrid lightweight constructions call for the assessment of their mechanical behavior. In the light of the absence of specific testing methodologies regarding knitted fabrics in the field of construction, this study aims at investigating customized testing techniques that target design requisites, as well as extending previous groundwork on plain weft- knitted textiles to tuck-loop knit structures. Fabrics with a piquet Lacoste loop structure are tested uniaxially and biaxially in order to estimate the feasibility of a relatively large-scale project. The challenging task consists of stretching the limited production width in weft direction to the extended dimensions of the tensile architectural project. Hence the study focuses on elongation limits and especially on the maximum elongation that allows elastic deformation. Extracted empirical data are expressed in the form of stress/strain curves that enable an appropriate understanding of the textiles’ mechanical behavior. This inquiry points out the extent to which knit pattern favors directional elongation in warp as opposed to weft or vice-versa. In addition, it addresses the mechanical performance of knitted textiles by means of a strategic customization of tensile tests that can make them better at informing the design process and feasibility assessment.</p>
