PurposeHumanitarian relief organisations such as charities count on donations to provide assistance to people in need when disasters occur. In the UK, about 11,200 charity shops collect second-hand goods from donors to raise funds for their parent charity to support target beneficiaries. As their numbers increase, charity shops are finding it difficult to secure good quality stock. Furthermore, they may need to plan ahead to secure sufficient stock when the economy experiences a downturn. This paper identifies the charity shop's role and its donation flow in the multi-tier supply chain and empirically assesses the barriers that influence intention to donate with a mixed-methods approach.Design/methodology/approachIn order to explore the charity shop's role within the multi-tier supply chain, this study begins with a literature review and then develops a conceptual model. In order to empirically evaluate the barriers that influence intention to donate, the authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 charity shop managers and collected 222 usable questionnaires from donors. The interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach was applied to examine the interrelationship among barriers and rank their priority.FindingsThis paper identifies ten significant barriers that influence intention to donate: lack of good quality items for donation; lack of information on how charity shops make use of donations; lack of familiarity with the donation process; lack of information of what items can be accepted by charity shops; lack of awareness of the impact that donations make; the difficulty of being available at the scheduled times for charity shops' free pick-up services; the difficulty of donating during shops' opening hours; the difficulty of finding parking to access charity shops; and living too far away from charity shops. In particular, the questionnaires' results indicate that lack of good quality items is the most significant barrier. This is also reflected in the ISM model, and thus needs more attention.Practical implicationsThe results are very useful for charity shops themselves to understand current barriers to securing good quality stock and to develop potential stock-securing interventions based on these barriers' priority.Originality/valueAlthough charity shops have been investigated by several researchers, their supply chain remains insufficiently explored. This paper fills this gap by identifying the charity shop's role and its donation flow in the supply chain and by empirically assessing the supply-side barriers with a mixed-methods approach.

Business developments that embrace the concept of a triple bottom line (TBL) encourage companies to pay attention to environmental and social challenges rather than just focus on maximum profits. Companies must contribute by making donations in corporate social responsibility activities or known as corporate philanthropy as a form of accountability to stakeholders. Research on the factor of board gender diversity, industry type and company size on CSR donations. This research uses multiple regression method. The research sample uses companies listed on the Indonesia stock exchange period 2017-2018. The results showed that the board gender diversity and the type of industry had a significant effect on CSR donations, while the size of the company had no significant effect. Purpose Taking advantage of the 2008 Sichuan Great Earthquake as a natural experiment, the purpose of this paper is to examine the motives and effects of corporate donations by focusing on how firm ownership identity as the first-order governance mechanism affects the motives and effects of disaster relief donations. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct regressions and market event studies, and use matching to address the confounding effects of differences in firm characteristics. Findings The authors hypothesize that private firms that are better governed than state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are more likely to donate for value maximization. Consistent with this, the authors find that private firms are more likely to donate to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and donate more than SOEs. The effects of secondary governance variables in the donation determinant models (e.g. board independence and managerial ownership) are more consistent with the value maximization argument. While short-term market reaction to donation announcement is not significant for private firms, it is lower when SOEs make a large donation. Consistent with the hypothesis, the authors find that over the 24–36 months following the donation, private donors realize a higher abnormal stock return. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the debate over the merits/costs of corporate donations and helps better understand how SOEs and private firms (particularly family-owned firms) differ in their governance and financial decision-making. Practical implications Both managers from private firms and SOEs can use the findings of this study to better guide their donation and other philanthropic decisions. Originality/value This study is the first to examine both the motives and effects of corporate donations by both private and SOEs taking advantage of the 2008 Sichuan, thereby significantly extending prior related studies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether companies that donate to winning electoral campaigns are more aggressive in terms of tax planning than companies that do not make these contributions. The relationship between politicians and companies may be signaled by political connections in which companies try to get political benefits in exchange for providing politicians with campaign financing. The hypothesis is that a quid pro quo occurs in which these companies benefit from favorable tax treatment that reduces their relative tax burden. Design/methodology/approach The focus of this study is donations that were made in the presidential elections of 2010 and 2014. The sample covers the period between 2010 and 2016 for companies listed on the B3 Stock Exchange, using proxies for tax aggressiveness computed based on value-added reporting. Through linear regressions, the authors have tested whether the companies that made these campaign contributions tend to have a lower tax burden. Findings The proposed hypothesis was confirmed, revealing that a political connection between campaign donations reduces the tax burden for donating companies during the years following the election. These donations appear to depict an environment characterized by an exchange of favors in which the donating companies exhibit greater tax aggressiveness than non-donating companies. Originality/value The current study deals with a subject that has not yet been examined empirically in Brazil and reinforces the position adopted by the Supreme Court in prohibiting campaign donations to inhibit quid pro quo practices. The study offers additional arguments for the criminalization of the so-called “second set of books” used to record electoral campaign contributions.

A constant increase in the rate of prescription writing has prompted several charity organizations to collect a growing number of unused medicines. WHO guidelines for drug donations discourage donation of unused medicines, as this may create a number of problems. Detrimental effects of drug donations for use in emergency situations have been reported, as the arrival of unsorted, useless and expired medicines requires management and sorting, which may take up the time of health workers and eventually lead to the appearance of these drugs on the black market. However, cases of regulated donations have been reported in the USA, where several states have adopted laws in order to facilitate the redistribution of unused drugs to indigent and uninsured patients. This project aims to donate medicines which are unused. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics are widely used to measure the firms’ social performance. In this regard, donation expenses are one of the outcomes for the firms’ effort to build, grow, and maintain the social value. However, firms may expense a trivial or minimum amount of donations, considering the corporate size, in order to disguise themselves as a “good company”. In this paper, exploiting 2010–2019 Korean Stock Exchange (KSE) market listed companies’ financials and ESG scores, we examine whether Chaebol firms with good governance “actually” spend more donation expenses. We predict and find that good governance does not actually lead to greater donation expenses among Chaebol firms, despite the positive relations between governance and donation expenses in general. Overall, our findings highlight that good Chaebol companies determined by ESG metrics may not be real charitable companies. Our findings provide counterevidence against the notion that firms with a higher ESG score are more likely to be charitable.

At the end of 2019, it was found that there was a very fast mutating virus called the Covid-19 virus, this virus causes diseases ranging from coughs to colds to death, efforts to prevent the spread of this virus by limiting the social scale of the community which causes a decrease in the number of blood donors which has an impact on the amount of blood stock in Blood Donation Unit. The objective of this study was to determine the description of blood donors based on blood type, gender, age, and type of donor at Blood Donation Unit Bantul Regency in 2020. This study was an activity report by observing secondary data obtained from Blood Donation Unit Bantul Regency. The number of donors was 8.212 donors, of which the number of donations from inside the building was 5.936 donors (72,28%), and the number of donations from mobile units was 2.276 donors (27,72%). The results showed that the majority of blood donors were blood group 0, which was 3.506 (42,69%), and the least blood type was AB, which was 468 (5.70%). The majority of the gender of the donor was male, namely 7.020 (85,48%), for female, 1.192 (14,52%). The majority of donors are aged 17-24 years, namely 1.738 (21,16%), and at least 65 years old 45 (0,55%). The majority of voluntary donors were 5.151 (62,73%), and the subtitute/ family donors were 1.034 (12,59%). There were 8.212 blood donors where the majority of blood group 0 was 3.506 (42,69%), male sex was 7.020 (85,48%), in the 17-24 year age group 1.738 (21,16%), and repeated voluntary donors were 5.151 (62,73%).

This thesis examines the impact of personal managerial characteristics on the decision making of chief executives (CEOs) at a corporate level. The research suggests executives’ personal philanthropy and educational backgrounds have a potent effect on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting and corporate environmental engagement and performance. My thesis is comprised of two studies. The first study explores the impact of CEO personal altruism on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting. The results show that firms run by CEOs with altruistic preferences, as captured by their stock donations, are less likely to commit financial fraud and exhibit lower levels of real and accrual-based earnings manipulation. These effects are more pronounced for CEOs who do not backdate when making stock donations and who donate stocks outside the tax season. The results are robust to a battery of endogeneity checks, including examining the effect of CEO turnovers, using difference-in-difference models, and applying an instrumental variable approach. Overall, the results suggest that personal altruism of managers has a disciplining effect on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting. Subsequently, the next chapter addresses potential measurement error of personal managerial altruism and extends the research of the effect of CEO altruism on the readability of a firm’s annual financial report. Similar conclusions are obtained when proxying CEO altruism by five alternative measures other than CEO stock donations. Further, the results also show that financial reports are more comprehendible for firms with altruistic CEOs. Building on the theories of familiarity and self-efficacy, the second study investigates the relationship between CEO educational background in science and MBA degrees, and corporate environmental responsibility. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms, this research conducts difference-in-difference analyses utilizing CEO turnovers to highlight the impacts of CEOs backgrounds on corporate environmental ratings and performance. The results show that science-educated CEOs take greater environmental risks rather than refraining from investing in environmental strengths which result in lower overall environmental CSR ratings. Conversely, CEO holdings MBA degrees outperform non-MBA CEOs in overall environmental CSR performance because MBA CEOs are more risk-averse in taking additional environmental risks. The overall findings document that CEO educational background may be a potent predictor of differences in corporate environmental engagement and performance.

This chapter describes the impact of giant multimedia conglomerates on internet services and applications. It first considers the media conglomerates that had dominated the political economy of communications and that now continued to help structure its capital logic. In particular, it looks at the competition presented not only by broadband and mobile internet operators but also by well-financed outsiders and upstarts such as Google and Facebook. It then examines three possible forms of revenue generation for communications and media beyond financing by venture capital and the sale of stock: direct payments, advertising, and noncommercial support, either through governmental or philanthropic finance or voluntary donations. The chapter concludes with a discussion of changes in specific media industries such as the book publishing industry, e-book industry, television industry, music industry, and film industry.

AbstractA university endowment is typically composed of assets, stocks and bonds to generate money for supporting the university’s mission. Most university endowments in the Western hemisphere are developed by donations and gifts. In the developing countries, where the donation culture does not exist, one needs to resort to alternative methods of generating an endowment. The paper presents an alternative model of university endowment, which could be adopted to develop an endowment for a university.

This chapter focuses on the Hejaz Railway. The Hejaz Railway is a unique archaeological and anthropological object, created for different reasons by various financial means from across the Muslim world—from faith-based donations and taxation, to the selling of archaeological heritage, and from the manufacture of stamps and honours to the acquisition of sheepskins. These resources were transmuted, in a sense recycled into rail tracks, embankments, bridges, station buildings, and rolling stock—all underwritten by imperial-military, regional, and geo-political realities cloaked in religious intent. Even the route was hybrid, a palimpsest belonging, variously, to prehistoric, Nabatean, Roman, and Byzantine trade pathways; Ottoman Hajj roads; and railway modernity. At the beginning of the twentieth century, as the railroad moved through this millennia-old landscape, it became a catalyst for conflict, embedded in a war which changed the region and the world.

I received an invitation to speak to the Heinz Endowments a few years ago. This major foundation was thinking of starting a program of charitable donations to help the environment and wanted advice about how to make the best use of its money. Would I participate, the director asked, in a one-day meeting on environmental education being organized by David Orr? My topic would be the role of the university. I went, and the following is more or less what I said to Heinz. During my first years as a board member of the Educational Foundation of America, which gives grants in a number of areas, including the environment and education, I was struck by the extreme scarcity of exciting, innovative, useful proposals coming out of the major research universities: Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, and the like. The second-tier research universities are no better; they are all scrambling to copy the bad models ahead of them. The problems that the universities are doing little or nothing to address—either in teaching or in research—are those that we must confront if our civilization is to survive. They are materialism in our culture; the deterioration of human communities; anomie; the commercialization (privatization) of former communal functions such as health, charity, and communication; the growth imperative; exploitation of the Third World; the disintegration of agriculture; our ignorance of the ecology of disease, especially epidemic disease; the loss of important skills and knowledge; the devastating decline in the moral and cultural-intellectual education of children; the impoverishment and devaluation of language; and the turning away from environmental and human realities in favor of thin, life-sucking electronic substitutes. Far from confronting these problems, universities are increasingly allying themselves with the multinational commercial forces that are causing them. The institutions that are supposed to be generating the ideas that nourish and sustain society have abandoned this function in their quest for cash. It is typical, for example, that with all the academics working on developing and patenting new crops, the only effective mechanism for monitoring and preserving the priceless and rapidly dwindling stock of existing crops in North America and Europe—the heritage of agriculture—was developed by a young farmer completely outside the university system.

Abstract.—Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and chum O. keta salmon bycatch in the Bering Sea Aleutian Islands (BSAI) walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma fishery has increased dramatically in recent years, reaching near record highs for both salmon species. This bycatch must either be thrown back into the water or saved for donation to food banks. Many of these salmon were bound for spawning streams in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) region of western Alaska, where the people of the AYK region await the salmon’s return to provide for subsistence and commercial fisheries, and to fulfil a vital cultural role. To examine the interplay between the pollock fishery and western Alaska salmon stocks, this paper reviews important characteristics of the pollock fishery, western Alaska salmon stock status and origins of salmon bycatch in the pollock fishery, legal requirements to reduce bycatch, past and present bycatch management measures, and discusses possibilities for change and improvement to ensure that salmon bycatch and the impacts to western Alaska salmon are reduced. Current management under the voluntary rolling hot spot system provides an adaptive approach to bycatch management, but has not reduced salmon bycatch overall. To be effective, this system needs to be combined with a total cap on salmon bycatch. Technical approaches to reduce salmon bycatch, such as salmon excluder devices, should be developed and implemented. Social devices such as labelling regimes for sustainably caught fish could also play a role in reducing salmon bycatch.

Donor screening in sperm banks has become increasingly medicalized in the last few decades. Sperm is a vital yet potentially dangerous substance. To improve its quality, sperm banks advise potential donors on how best to prepare themselves prior to donating. To mitigate the dangers it poses, sperm banks screen would-be donors as a way to prevent transmission of genetic and infectious disease from donor to recipient. Chapter 5 argues that practices that take place within the sperm bank’s facilities and laboratories can helpfully be analyzed as technologies of assurance (quebao) as sperm banks manage heredity and purity as matters of transmission while also encouraging cultivation practices aimed at procuring a lively stock of sperm for distribution to fertility centers throughout China.

Abstract.—The Paddlefish Polyodon spathula has been identified and characterized disparately by commercial harvesters, anglers, managers, and the public, from a rough fish, to a food fish, to a trophy sport fish, to one of North America’s most economically valuable and evolutionarily irreplaceable fish species. It is most commonly harvested with recreational fishing methods often used only for low-valued species, including snagging (the most common method) and archery since adults are primarily filter feeders and thus not susceptible to more traditional angling methods used for sport or game fishes. The prevalence of recreational snagging throughout the Mississippi and Missouri basins increased greatly over the period 1950–1975, associated with impoundment of upper Mississippi and Missouri mainstem and tributary reaches. More Paddlefish became accessible to snaggers below dams as spawning and feeding migrations were impeded and fish aggregated in tailwaters. The variability of legal and administrative classifications of Paddlefish and differing perceptions of the species by harvesters, managers, and the public have resulted in a fish with a complex identity. While Paddlefish in the past have been petitioned for federal listing under the Endangered Species Act, to date they have not been listed. Recreational fisheries management strategies, goals, and objectives have varied widely, perhaps understandably, since the species is managed at the state level. To assess the current situation, we administered an electronic survey to state Paddlefish managers from each of the 25 current and former range states, requesting information on Paddlefish status, regulations, perceptions, and management strategies. The legal and administrative classification of Paddlefish by each state remains the primary factor in how they are managed, and we identified several regional management strategies. Paddlefish regulations continue to evolve based on new research findings and stock assessments. The most impactful regulatory changes have been the development of limited entry Paddlefish fisheries requiring the purchase of a special Paddlefish permit and three instances where recreational fisheries and stock assessments are supported in part by voluntary roe-donation programs. Management of Paddlefish across the Mississippi Basin at biologically relevant or regional scales remains the most rational and desirable long-term goal.

The Wessex kings’ conquest of the whole of England during the first half of the tenth century created conditions that led to a nation-state being recognizable by the end of the eleventh. In Scotland this was a much longer process, and Wales remained fragmented. The differences between them are mirrored by coinage; increasingly regulated and systematic in England, but not even produced in Scotland or Wales. The nation-state remained focused upon kings, however, elevating their status but exposing society to the haphazard behaviour and ambitions of an individual. They might still be seen as leading their ‘people’, English, Norman or whomsoever, but in reality they depended upon the support of a military elite and legitimization by the Church, rather than upon an efficient bureaucracy, let alone upon popular acceptance. Physical expression of royal supremacy was provided by increasingly elaborate inauguration rituals, and by crown-wearing ceremonies held on major feast-days at Gloucester, Winchester, and elsewhere, when the king represented his elevation by displaying himself with his emblems of power. A crown had been used as an image on coins by King Athelstan in the 930s, though his immediate successors stuck mainly to the traditional diadem. Ethelred (978–1016) added a staff, symbolizing a king’s pastoral duties to his people, and was occasionally shown wearing a round cap, usually taken to represent a helmet based on Roman coin images rather than on contemporary armour. The ‘hand of Providence’ on the reverse of some of his coins implied God’s blessing on an anointed king (cf. Col. pl. F.2). Cnut (1016–35) began his reign with a coin showing him crowned, as though to emphasize that his usurpation of power was legitimized by God through his coronation; the crown was a new type, an open circle surmounted by gold lilies. He followed it with a coin that has him wearing a tall, pointed helmet, this time a form that was in contemporary use. The lily-circlet crown had already been shown in a manuscript picture being worn by King Edgar in c.966, and a domed version was drawn being brought down from Heaven to crown Cnut in a painting that commemorates his donation of a gold cross to the New Minster at Winchester.

Background: In two years from now, Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup competition, which requires high level of preparedness and readiness in different sectors including healthcare. Among different subsections of health, the blood bank and the Blood Donor Center will have a major role in this event especially in case of unforeseen incidences. Accordingly, a proper assessment of the current blood resource availability and a prediction of future blood needs helps in overcoming any obstacle that could be faced during the event. Objectives: (1) Highlight the process of the blood supply chain, with a detailed delineation of the needed amount of blood components for both routine and emergency situations services, and outline the proper measures taken to deliver the safest and most appropriate blood units and reduce wastage of blood component. (2) Assess the current standing of the Blood Donor Center and corresponding units in Qatar. (3) Develop a forecast model that predicts the number of blood donors in the next four years as a method to evaluate the readiness of the Blood Donor facility to host the world cup event. (4) Explore the potential challenges that could be faced when meeting the benchmark of donation and established an action plan to overcome these anticipated challenges. Materials and methods: Both qualitative (interviews) and a quantitative (data collection and analysis) approaches have been implemented in our study. We also established a time series forecast model using Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA). Results: The number of donors in the next four years, which is predicted to increase by 26%, will not be able to be accommodated in the current Blood Donor Center facility. Therefore, the established blood stock benchmark will not be met despite that the Center and its corresponding units are fully equipped with high standard equipment and follow international guidelines in the process of blood withdrawal. Conclusion: Infrastructure improvements and logistics support for Hamad Medical Corporation Blood Donor Center are required to support the continuously increasing numbers of blood donors for daily demand and during mega events.
